He Shoots, He Score(board)s!: Uni Watch DIY Project

P4050016.jpg

[Editor’s Note: Today’s post is guest-written by Idaho State media rep Frank Mercogliano, who recently took on a major DIY project. Enjoy. — PL]

By Frank Mercogliano

Along with my media duties, I’m also the sport administrator for soccer and softball at Idaho State. Our softball program was brought back in 2007 after a 24-year absence, and they don’t have a field on campus, their ATV to drag the infield is broken, and life is basically a little rough for the team right now. Case in point: In a meeting last month, my coach casually mentioned that the NCAA mandates that we have a scoreboard — something our current field doesn’t have.

Now, we actually have a nice electronic scoreboard for the softball team, but we don’t want to put it up at a temporary field, have to wire the field for it, etc., only to take it down in a year or two and rebuild it somewhere else. Not very cost-effective in these times. But after seeing all the great DIY projects at Uni Watch, I though, “Why not just build a manual one?”

So I sketched out this idea on my computer, priced out the materials, and figured I could do it for less than $500. The money man at the school gave me the OK, and I was off.

Without going into all the gory details, I basically painted 19 4×8 boards. Five were for the scoreboard itself (four for the front, and one to attach it to the existing fence), and the other 14 would be used to cut out 12×18 inch tiles for the numbers. I used a router and a jigsaw to cut the holes in the scoreboard (26 11×16 holes”¦it took awhile).

One of the cool things was figuring out which font to use for the scoreboard. After deciding upon the tried and true Varsity Block, I printed out numbers from 0 to 22, enlarged them on the copier onto 11×17 cardstock, and then cut them out to create stencils, which looked way cool.

Once I got everything stenciled and water-sealed, it all sat in my office in four parts. The first part has the most detail, with the foul line, distance marker, and the first two innings. The next two parts, which cover innings 3 through 10, are pretty much identical. And then there’s the final part, which has R/H/E board. This panel is five feet high, in order to accommodate the ball/strike/out component. I did that by using door hinges to connect yellow wood squares that simulate lights, and they just flip over for strike one, strike two, and so on.

I have to tell you, spray-painting the numbers took a long time. Here’s how one of the numbers looks in one of the inning slots (the numbers just hang on a screw in the back, with the inning hand-written on the back side so nobody gets screwed up). Sadly, I didn’t get a picture of all the numbers we covering my floor, which looked awesome.

I also picked up white shelving from the major hardware retailer in town and sprayed it yellow to make a foul pole screen. Plus I had extra wood and made distance markers for the other sections of the outfield.

On Tuesday (just nine days later), we used a gas-powered dirt auger (best $29.57 rental EVER) to dig the fence posts in and install the scoreboard, and voila! Here’s a close-up view from the corner, here’s how it looks from home plate, and here’s a shot of the foul pole and screen. All of the tiles that are blank on the front have a zero on the back, so the tile just flips over if no one scores in the inning.

The goofy spot is where the board connects to the existing fence. We zip-tied it to the fence and then but an 8-foot board up. The yellow line is in play, the black is a home run. Also, if a ball for some reason goes through an inning hole in the scoreboard it’s a ground-rule double, two bases.

Grand total was $402, about 70 hours of my life, and more manual labor and woodworking than a guy who makes a living on a computer is used to. But honestly, all the great DIY projects I’ve seen here were kind of an inspiration. Now we just need to come up with a name for the thing. Frank’s Folly isn’t going to cut it.

==========

Paul here. A few days after sending me that post, Frank sent along some pics of the scoreboard from its first day of game action. Looks great, as I’m sure you’ll agree. Big, big kudos to him for tackling such a great project, and for sharing the details with us.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Here’s the Phillies’ Harry Kalas memorial patch. ”¦ I’m sure there’s something stupider than this, but I can’t imagine what it would be. ”¦ One of the many good things about Jerry Manuel is that he goes high-cuffed every day. And here’s why. ”¦ Noted uniform expert George Will has a bone to pick with the uniform of choice for most Americans (i.e., blue jeans). His rant is sort of pathetic and sort of accurate but misses the key point in our societal denim obsession: the fetishization of the primitive, which is also at the root of most of our weird cultural tropes. Of course, for Will, beer in a can counts as “primitive,” so it’s no surprise that he’s missed the boat on that line of analysis. ”¦ Tyler Kepner has broken down some of the finer nuances of the new Yankee Stadium. ”¦ Good prototype story from Mike MacCulloch, who writes: “I worked in the Seahawks’ front office from 1997-2000 (ticket office for three seasons and corporate sales for one). I joined the team just after Paul Allen had purchased the team and the state had agreed to build a new stadium. In 2000, just as the team was moving into Husky Stadium while Qwest Field was being built, the team was in the process of designing new uniforms and helmets. During that time, they went through many different designs. At one point they created three different prototype helmets, each in a different color and with different logos on each side of the helmets. The idea at that time was to have the Hawk logo with a red eye to make it look more intimidating, as well as a possible modification to the back portion of the logo. I was able to save this helmet from being tossed out when our interns cleaned out one of the storage areas. For whatever reason, whoever put the helmets together seemed to rush putting the decals on, so there’s a slight bubble to it. Still, plenty interesting (and ugly).” I showed the photos to one of my ESPN bosses, Kevin Jackson, who’s from Seattle, and he said, “This answers the age-old question: What would the Seahawks logo look like if it got drunk?” ”¦ Some awesome old hockey photos here (with thanks to Doug Keklak). ”¦ Last item on this Q&A page suggests that UNC basketball may have some throwbacks next season (with thanks to Al Hood). ”¦ Check out these white numbers on a white striped background. That’s the Toronto Argonauts, pre-WWII (with thanks to Terry Paffenroth). ”¦ Lots of photos of Fred Taylor in the Pats’ new throwbacks here (with thanks to Doug Buros). ”¦ Kirsten turned me on to something really great. If you click through the various categories on that page, you’ll see some amazing — and I mean amazing — old WPA posters. Did I mention that they’re amazing? Oh, but anyone offended by yesterday’s tea party “bashing” (as one reader complained to me) should probably steer clear, since the WPA was, of course, a socialist plot.

I have a few WPA posters in my basement, courtesy of my grandmother whose first job was as a secretary for a WPA office in New York. Great stuff and I’ll try to get some shots of them for you, Paul.

Back to sports…in light of that great No Mas “I’m Calling It Shea” t-shirt, I think there should be one for the Yankees’ new park that says “I’m Going Back Across The Street.”

Cool DIY project. It looks weird to not have the innings grouped in three’s, but you do what you have to do I guess. Also I wonder how many of each number he painted. Just curious.

Although I love the AFL throwbacks…I wish they would have made the shoulder stripes go all the way around the shoulder like in the original unis…not just on the top of the shoulder pads. Talking about the Pats uni that Fred Taylor has on.

Not to be an a$$, but i think the innings part could have been spaced better. otherwise, i like it. are the balls, strikes, outs “flip overs”? also, does the scoreboard operator act as the official scorer?

Interesting that the only helmet shown during the Fred Taylor photo shoot is a Bills Throwback shown in the first photo. Otherwise those uni’s look amazing. Can’t wait to see them on the field again

I know that I’m an old fogey, but when players are wearing throwbacks can we have them erase the tattoos?

I could’ve sworn this guy link was wearing one of those rec league jerseys you see (obviously a modern thing) with his number as pi. It takes a second for the brain to make sense of the jersey and see 71.

Phil, Just wanted to let you know that I am documenting the Nationals uniform and record for you. Dont know if you already have someone doing them, but I am up for it, only take a few seconds each morning.

What do they call that background color on the Seahawk prototype? It was a pukey-green-gold-sparkly catastrophe.
    link

P.S. How do I put a link like this into my main post so you could get to it by clicking on ‘catastrophe’?

I read that George Will column as well, at a Burger King along I-95 in South Hill, VA, and if you can imagine the setting, you can understand tat I was similarly in complete agreement yet fairly disgusted. What got me was the first graf, the description of the guy and his kid at the airport. I’m kinda of the mind that flying is a privilege, and you oughta at least throw on some shoes and pants rather than jammies and flip-flops when you fly…but I’m taking my almost-two-year-old on her first flight on a couple weeks, and I’m planning on dressing for comfort and convenience (which means jeans, and probably a hooded sweatshirt with big pockets) rather than George Will’s stuffy criteria of appropriateness.

Also, not to get all politicky, but this should be Exhibit A next time some conservative blowhard points to those left-of-center as being the “elitists”.

love the scoreboard frank, great work!!! i’d definitely have a few of my favorite numbers hanging on my wall after the season… real “throw-backy” look!

Did anyone have a chance to check out the Phillies-Nats game last night? The Nats American Flag jerseys looked awful especially when paired with their red helemts.
Did anyone have a chance to check out the Phillies-Nats game last night? The Nats American Flag jerseys looked awful especially when paired with their red helemts.
what were they wearing?!?!

    lol

    kidding… happy friday all!

I too thought it weird to see the innings grouped so bizarrely, and couldn’t help wondering if it was like that so that the scoreboard could be used for other sports too.

I can’t find any good images now (only this link), but I think the small Yankee Stadium fence scoreboard used to cleverly separate out the numbers for the four quarters so as to fit into the existing nine-inning layout. Were you trying for something like that; compatible with soccer, field hockey, etc.?

I’ve always been fascinated with scoreboards, and think that they were more readable in earlier days. Maybe it was the custom, hand-drawn number fonts.

Incidentally, many Japanese baseball scoreboards make use of the native numerals so as to not have to separate things into three-inning blocks for readability. Here’s the link and their old one in use until around last year. Here’s the link (which also differentiates between position numbers and spots in the batting order by making use of both kinds of numerals), and here’s a link.

    Amateurs are stuck link.

Patriots have never worn pants striped like that, either.

    just a few thoughts…

baggy jeans and a baggy hooded sweatshirt is perfectly fine for flying. esp. with a little one!

i don’t care who it is… or what time of day it is… but when i see someone wearing jammies out in public, i think they look like total crap! WAY too far!

for my last statememnt above… sometimes even sweatpants!

ewww… now that i think of it, sweatpants most of the time! lol

i’m 110% confident that i can take a $30-$40 pair of jeans and make them look like MOST $100-$300 jeans! no prob at all (most of the time for the low-low cost of… sandpaper)

some people just CAN’T wear jeans. lol. corporate america, i’m looking in your direction…

i’m typing all of this wearing my penguins jersey and jeans… in a corporate office building…

Loved the WPA posters, especially regarding health and safety. The guy in overalls is really enthused about low rent homes!!!

I’m reading George Will’s column too, and while I like the guy when he’s talking about baseball (he wrote “Met At Work”, after all), and also like conservative dress and hate seeing people in bare feet and shorts and whatnot in the workplace, he’s really coming across as a stuffed shirt this time. And what’s with the gratuitous snipe at video-game players (who are “even allowed to vote”!)?

I’m an avid reader of uniwatch and have an affinity for uniform and logo changes. I found that a relatively inexpensive way to feed my passion was to collect hockey pucks. I had collected for over 20 years and when I stopped back in 2000, I’m proud to say that I had every variation of every team’s logo from EVERY LEAGUE in the US and Canada – NHL, AHL, ECHL, WCHL, OHL, QMJHL, and the list goes on and on. For a while, I was buying large wooden display cases to organize all of the pucks and display them in my basement – but it simply got too expensive.

I was wondering if you had any ideas for an inexpensive way to make a cool display that encompasses hundreds and hundreds of hockey pucks?? Thanks for your ideas!

I have liked scoreboards forever, and deciding I needed a hobby once, I made one myself for baseball.

It’s 7′ by 2′ — I spent about 30 minutes looking for the exact right shade of green (Billiard Room Green won). I used index cards for the numbers and put them inside of those nametag holders turned vertically once I found that cutting holes would be too difficult. The numbers along the top are your typical mailbox numbers.

    and the final result.

link. I really do think this is a nice touch–really adds color.

I remember Shea used to have flags like this but a few years ago they chose to ring the stadium with American flags (and one Canadian flag) instead. Citi Field is the same as Shea was, with American flags circling the top of the stadium. I wished they could’ve brought the team flags back.

link, where you can see the flags for Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. NL teams are on the 3B side and AL teams are on the 1B side.

My judgement on what a person wears is always, and pretty much only, this: did the person think about what they’re wearing? Are they trying to send a message about themselves or are they just lazy (and therefore stupid)?

No one type of clothing can be bad, in my mind.

If one wears a suit and tie, and it comes off like they’re merely doing do because they have to, that reflects very poorly on the person. I think of them as not much of a thinker, a bland and uninteresting person.

If someone is wearing baggy jeans halfway down their- ummmm- backside, dreads, t-shirt to large, etc. I can generally respect that at least they’ve thought of some sort of message they want to send.

That Seahawks helmet with the red eye is brutal! I guess if they went back to their 1976 helmets without a logo they wouldn’t ever need to worry about the decal bubbling.

My Dad used to say, “You’ll act the way you’re dressed.”
    Thought it was hooey.
Now I think it’s absolutely true, for most people.
AND, I also think it’s true that, “You’ll dress how you intend to act.”

    —Ricko

Love the Pats throwbacks!! just wondering why they would have Fred taylor wear them? he hasn’t even played for the pats. maybe bruschi, or brady,or seymore?

The quintessential treatment of blue jeans and their place in American culture is John Fiske’s (one of the founding fathers of American cultural studies) treatment of them in his Reading the Popular (or, for a more theoretical slant, Understanding the Popular). The pertinent chapter, which discuss the commodification and aesthetization of jeans, is “The Jeaning of America.” For all of us that insist on wearing jeans on a daily basis, weddings/funerals excluded, it’s a must read. Will can’t hold a candle to it.

especially in light of their only win coming in shall we say, semi patriotic highly comical utter shit their second alts, will they now use this as a ‘slumpbuster’?

    /god help us all

on another note…did anyone watch the MLB TV “news” with vasgersian (sp), larkin & migrane? they busted all over the nats unis and then went on a semi-diatribe about unis, particularly old unis — how the pirates in their “bumblebees” and “layercake hats” (migrane’s words) had multiple combos, as well as other teams from the 70’s — and bragged “we’ll have to do a show on all the uni combos” from the past

Rob, I’m in agreement re Airport/travel wear. Jeans/sweatshirt are fine. Shorts/sandals, no. Sweatpants, no. (remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry told George that people who wear sweats in public is saying “I give up”)

Paul- you just can’t leave the political crap alone can you? How big of a stretch is it to include a George Will article about jeans into a uniform blog!? Why don’t you just get a new web site number (thanks Joe Biden) for your political blog and leave this to unis!?

Rush Limbaugh lumbers onto the airwaves in 75 minutes, so you won’t have very long to wait before you can be safely ensconced in your own little echo chamber where other people’s opinions aren’t tolerated.

I have to confess that as far as colored alts go, I rather like those worn by the Nationals. Using the DC initials is cool (kind of like the Twins with their TC), and the whole look is a little different from the norm, yet not flaky. Thumbs up.

I’m not sure about this, but I’m hoping the Nats unis yesterday were because it was “Military Opening Night.” Hopefully they don’t use those ugly stars-and-stripes logos too often.

(Even though I live in DC, I think last night was only the third game I’ve been to in Nationals Park, so I could be completely off on what their normal uniforms are.)

Fair enough, if you can honestly say that you would have posted that article regardless I can accept it. I agree with you on the tea parties..pretty fucking stupid. Too much like all the stupid whiny liberal protests! Look, I’m not here to start political debates..thats what I was trying to avoid. Sean Hannity IS a great American. And he can instantly recognize other great Americans, too. It’s anyone who agrees with him.

    See how simple that is.

Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Coulter and the others …they all understand that basic truth, and are, of course, baffled that the rest of us can’t seem to grasp it.

Also, I think those Nat’s DC unis look sweet. Nick Johnson rocking the high red socks with it looks particularly cool.

The Nats alts? Not so bad, except for the red helmet and red socks. That looked…not so so good.

So then…Memo to Nats: When you wear that “ensemble”, go ahead and wear your pants ankle length. Covers the socks.

Nowadays you can’t find a protest that isn’t being run by nutjobs. Doesn’t matter what its about, doesn’t matter which party line it follows, if there’s a protest, you’re sure to find wackos who will take it to the n’th degree to make a name for themselves.

Thats why they’re funny. You’re guaranteed to find someone who thinks they’re better than you, yet can’t string out comprehensive sentences to explain why.

By the way, meant to mention before all the political winds got stirred up…loved the scoreboard! Great old school feel. Much better than most of the typical generic, electric counterparts!

Hey All – Paul said it was cool if I ask this in the comments section. Frank – I think it was a project well done. I did something similar for a family member and I can understand what it took to do it. Great job.

I read the jeans article and thought that maybe Will should pull the stick out. Styles change; what is considered acceptable dress changes. Exactly who am I disrespecting by wearing jeans? I should dress like Grace Kelly? You have got to be kidding me.

OK, I’ll try to answer the questions as best I can:

Spacing: Basically it was a product of having to fit as many innings as possible onto the boards, remembering that I couldn’t get too close to the edges of the wood, otherwise I couldn’t secure them to the posts, and they would risk breaking if the cuts were too close to the edge. 2/4/4 seemed like the natural way to do it.

    TILES:
    26 blank/0
    12 1/2
    10 3/4
    8 5/6
    8 7/8
    6 9/10
    6 11/12
    4 13/14
    4 15/16
    3 17/18
    2 19/20
    2 21/22

I can’t imagine ever running out with those combinations (I looked at all of ISU’s final boxes for the last three years, and never came close to the amount of tiles I ended up using. I also have about 16 blanks to replace tiles if needed.

B/S/O: Yes Al, they are just flip-overs on the door hinge. I have a 6-9 basketball player getting practicum hours flipping those constantly. And no, you aren’t an $$$ for thinking the spacing of the innings is goofy. the two middle boards are actually perfectly symetrical as far as the placement of the windows from the center of the board.

Also, the team has dubbed the board “Big Black”. It hasn’t come into play through four games, but we play today at 4 and have a DH tomorrow at 12, so maybe soon. Also one addition is that there is now a screw on each side of the window on the back, and after the number is placed in the window, we hook a rubber band on the back of the two new screws to keep the tile from flapping around. Very hi-tech.

Thanks everyone for the great comments and glad you enjoyed seeing it, and thanks to Paul for posting it, and for the blog….it’s great stuff!

Does anyone else find it funny that Burger King is forced to redo their Mexican ads, in this climate? I mean, imagine the waste that went into the comercials and the print ads, all the consumer panels okayed it and got paid to sit and watch 30 seconds, all the consultants and outside art firms that we used… and shortly after it airs they get complaints and have to pull and revise the whole thing:

I know it is a couple days old now, and I am sure it has been talked about, for that I appologize.

Many thoughts about the George Will piece whose sentiment I largely sympathize with, so I suppose I have elitist tendencies. It seems right to label this trend as the “infantilization” of society, so Paul, I’d be very interested to hear you expound on your idea of the “fetishization of the primitive.”

In the old days there were other options for cheap, casual mens’ pants. Simple light cottons. Later on, poly-cotton blends. You don’t see that stuff much anymore. Watching the movie West Side Story I notice you have all these guys – gang members! – jumping around in close-fitting cotton pants – maybe some denim, or brushed cotton – but in all different colors. It’s kind of a cool look compared to the blue jeany sameness of today.

I also think that fit makes a big difference in how the jean look comes off. The pervasive blobbiness of contemporary American jean cuts is dismaying. It’s a toddler’s look – Will is right about that. In the latest issue of Harper’s magazine (oh no, elitism!) there’s a little piece by a French writer (oh no…) named Charles Dantzig who identifies “the bad cut of their jeans” as one of the marks of an American. In other words, Europeans wear jeans too, but wear them better.

That said, I think the horror of modern air travel encourages everyone to dress down & that makes perfect sense. Why would you waste your good clothes in that situation – there’s a good chance you might be sleeping in them at the airport.

What I find so amazing—as a 30-year ad guy—is that their ad agency even suggested it. You’d have to have the perceptiveness of a basement-living Trekkie with a sponge collection to think there wouldn’t be some kind of backlash.

I dont think the Nats will resort to the flag alternates as a slump buster, at least I hope they dont. I believe they wore them yesterday because it was “Emancipation Day” in D.C. and they are supposed to wear the blue alts. on holidays.

George Will is kind of a douche bag. Don’t like what I wear? Don’t look.

I’m quite sick of the rancor that so many here are dumping on those with whom they disagree. If the issue isn’t up to the level of genocide or destroying what’s left of our civilization, chances are your opponent is simply well-intentioned and misguided rather than an soulless minion of some dark power. One aspect of a society where people are free to do a variety of things is that some people will disapprove of some of your choices just as you disapprove of some other folks’ choices. Get over it already.

Ricko, as a current ad guy, the stuff I see presented at brainstorming meetings and the like (especially by clients) is the most brain-dead rubbish imaginable. Sometimes no one wants to tell a person that their “pet idea” is garbage and/or offensive (this BK study wins the daily double). Mostly it’s that nobody stood up and said “no” to the VP that suggested this idea, and the client wasn’t paying attention and just signed off on it.

There is a dearth of talent at the Madison Avenue-type agencies these days, and it’s because they hired the mouthbreathing frat-boy types who come up with ads like you see for the misogynistic Axe, the creepy Burger King, Quizno’s singing dead rats, and the Geico cavemen, among others.

Incidentally, this big-agency thinking extends itself into design, specifically the terrible uniforms you see in pro sports. The Nationals, Padres’ khaki pants, and Buffalo Bills are pretty good examples of how NOT to dress players, but some design consultancy somewhere made a lot of money doing just that…

I remember not buyin’ the story of it being a prototype, yet, resolved to the fact that if it were then I want no part of it because it was so fugly. I am pretty sure that the NFL Properties Design Group(revised Seahawks logo/colors/branding 2002) had nothing to do with this, however, the front office could have come up with this mess of ideas, then, the NFL design team cleaned it up to what they have now?

I absolutely agree with Mr. Will’s rants against jeans. Those of you on the East Coast don’t realize just how omnipresent they are out here in the West because enough people back there still have a sense of taste or at least understand that there is a time and place for various clothing. This is a concept that is elusive to most of my compatriots out here. There is no way to wear jeans and not look underdressed and in my book it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
Jeans are to me what the University of Oregon’s uniforms are to the rest of civilized society.

More worried about the evening’s beer special than learning something. Whereas, the women are ALL business in college, because they know they have to prove themselves in the professional workplace.

This whole culture carries down into the uni business … where “green” jerseys are all over the NBA (could David Stern be the most pretentious jerk in sports history?).

Similarly, it shows in things like the Padres’ unique khakis. They are onto something, in this era of bland baseball ubiquity. The problem is … they’re 70% there. They need someone at the helm with design credentials to bring the idea to fruition. Somebody NOT plugged into the ubiquity and trying to “fit in.”

The best ideas will have more to do with the ol’ Taco Bell/Dave Winfield era Padre unis …

… than what they currently have. It’s suburban beige mentality brought on by this fratdolt agency culture. Same with the Buffalo Bills. The new DC baseball alts, and on down the line.

You know, deep down, they REALLY want to go all tequila sunrise Astro all over a new set of unis … damn near EVERY team this side of the Yanks, Cubs and Cards wants to …

But they: A) don’t have the nutsack to stand OUT THERE, and, B) they don’t have the skillset to pull it off.

That’s what’s so beautiful about the Pirates, Astros, Padres, Indians, Mariners, Nuggets, Buccaneers, et al, from the 70s and 80s … they took a chance and succeeded with historically significant designs.

Because, historically speaking, they’re the ones that are always looking for the handout. They’re so used to playing the victim card that they don’t need to protest to have the media already take their side into account.

I’m sorry, but this whole bailout thing is a load of shit. You bought a mortgage you can’t afford? Well, tough shit, you fucked up, now deal with it. Your company backed those mortgages? Tough shit, you fucked up, now enjoy declaring bankruptcy for your idiocy.

Those who made smart decisions, those who didn’t fuck up, those who did the right thing should not have to foot the bill for the stupid. This bailout is the government forcing that upon us.

time to play the powers card?

I’m no fan of the bailout, but look at it from a practical perspective. So, you work hard for a living, pay your taxes, afford your mortgage, live within your means. You have a 401(k) at work and it just so happens that your employer uses Citi or BOA or whoever for that 401(k). Now, the bank goes bankrupt and you’re out your 401(k) and retirement just got a lot harder. Is that fair? Folks got so wrapped up in the anti-corporate zeitgeist that many of the practicalities of propping these banks up were forgotten.

When I fly, I wear dress casual for the most part, a polo shirt and khakis or jeans. But I might offend some people with my choice of shoes, if appearance is a hang-up. I go with what is (a) easy to slip on and off at the dang security checkpoint and (b) comfortable enough to run in. I had an experience with a connector flight where I landed late and had to run completely across Denver Intl Airport in roughly 10 minutes. After that experience, no more dress shoes on flights. If you’re offended, then know that it’s not my intent to slight the pleasant aesthetics of airport ambiance for you. =D
A big part of America’s love affair with Jeans is their ruggedness. Dress pants wear out rather quickly, and are extremely vurnerable to accidental tears from bumping into things or getting snagged on something. Jeans, however, can last for years of constant use, can stand getting snagged on stuff, and actually wear out gracefully rather than ugly. When it is cheaper to buy Denim that lasts longer than the alternatives, I don’t blame people for choosing Jeans.

As a disclaimer, though, I am a college aged gamer who voted, so I’m not exactly in that article’s “Target market”

I just started keeping track of the Brewers uniforms for the season.

    So far:

Road Blue Top on Gray Pants 1-1
Home White Top on White Pants 2-2
Home Blue Top on White Pants 0-2

Jeans are not inherently more comfortable than dress pants. As others, including George Will, have pointed out the beauty of denim is how tough & rugged they are. This is more likely to make jeans less comforable than a lighter fabric.

Those are great concepts, but I disagree with one statement he made. He states that the Braves have failed to capitalize on the popularity of their Cooperstown Collection merch by incorporating elements of that design into the everyday uniforms.

I don’t think anyone really wants to see a return of the Braves’ 70s look on a regular basis. It’s a dated look that has no place in the 21st century as an everyday uniform.

I think the Braves have “returned to their roots.” They did it in 1988. They ditched the royal blue of the 70s and 80s, and returned to a uniform design inspired by their look from the 40’s and 50s in Boston and Milwaukee. They have continued to use that as their uniform baseline every since.

One late-to-the-party comment about the flags at New Yankee Stadium: can they use an actual flag for each city or franchise, rather than writing-on-a-flag, which looks terrible?

I mean, every city in the country has a flag, fly the darn thing. A lot of the franchises also have official flags or banners that could be flown, if using the city flags is too hard.

For multiple-franchise cities, something could be thought up. The boroughs of NY have flags, for instance. I think the only tricky one would be Chicago.

Egad those Nads (as in, “Go Nads”…get it…oh, never mind) link are terrible! The interlocking DC is a cool idea (love it in SF, St.L, NY, etc…not in LA, but that’s just ‘cuz it’s on a Dodgers cap), but, with the placket piping, it’s about 50% too big for the space available.

Of course they can’t make it any smaller because of the stars and stripes inside the lettering.

Maybe that should be the rule of thumb: If you’re designing a logo and it’s too busy to make small enough to fit, maybe you should simplify the design.

Thanks again for the comments…it was really fun to do. I thought about the rock thing right after the first couple of tiles, but then I thought that the little extra spray around the edges sort of added to the whole “Homemade” quality of it, and from the stands, you couldn’t see it anyways.

I’m at the field (30 minutes before first pitch) and the umps went out to inspect it and all three said it was the coolest thing they had ever seen on a softball field. I smiled a little more than normal!

George Will used his forum to give an opinion about how he thinks certain people should dress in certain situation.

It’s just too bad he didn’t scold people for, I don’t know:

    Wearing their pants long.
Stretching the pants over their heels.
    Wearing socks instead of stirrups.
Untucking their shirts as soon as a game is over.
    Wearing hats off-center.
I just started keeping track of the Brewers uniforms for the season.

    So far:
Road Gray Top on Gray Pants 0-1
Road Blue Top on Gray Pants 1-1
Home White Top on White Pants 2-2
Home Blue Top on White Pants 0-2

Like Ricko said, no games yet in the throwback pinstripes.
Brewers will only wear the pinstripes once this year, I think it’s in September.

Just saw an interview from Cito Gaston during batting practice, and he was wearing a throwback hat. Which gives me every reason to think that they team will wear their powder blue throwback jerseys on Home Friday nights again this season.

The Pens are on FSN Pittsburgh tonight so I haven’t seen it yet, but got a tweet that the buccos are in the black unis tonight.

I’m interested to see what they look like on the field. Thought they looked crappy when unveiled.

Oakland’s pitcher Outman is wearing the green and yellow stirrups on the mound today, and the Jays announcers have been talking about them, I think the strangest line has to been from Rance Mullinicks… “It looks like he is riding a chicken”

Yeah, I was watching the game. It looks to me as if Outman or the trainer has done a poor job of cutting, as the yellow part showing – does not look the same size on each leg.

So what exactly did Rance mean?

I’ll be wearing jeans to work for the entire month of May because I donated to the Fallen Heroes Fund at work (benefit for the Pittburgh Police officers tragically killed in the line of duty).

George Will can suck my ass.

Remember, the people running around, calling the shots, making subprime loans to people that couldnt afford the homes they were buying. They all more than likely wore suits.

I have no clue what Rance meant. I was only kind of half listening, so I may have mis-heard, but I don’t think so. He didn’t really elaborate on it.

No pictures yet, but in tonight’s Nats/Marlins game, Adam Dunn and another player were missing the “o” in the Nationals on the front of their jerseys. A couple of innings later they were fixed.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is wearing Red catching gear tonight with the Red Alternate Jersey.

    but,

    His “knee-savers” are blue.

Can’t tell yet which way he’s wearing his helmet yet.

You will have no one to blame for yourself.

I am sure that Paul won’t have the guts to leave this post up, and delete it as he usually does when someone doesn’t agree with him.

BTW…the Red Sox should wear red socks, not blue.
Guess who’s a cowardly pussy hiding behind a phony e-mail address.

    Hint: Rhymes with “StevenT.”

Just once I’d like to see these losers have the courage of their so-called convictions. I’m embarrassed to have them among my readers — not because they’re so stupid, but because they’re such total wusses.

No pictures yet, but in tonight’s Nats/Marlins game, Adam Dunn and another player were missing the “o” in the Nationals on the front of their jerseys. A couple of innings later they were fixed.
I love watching Paul unleash the firestorm. A little bit more banhammer action, and I would live on this site.

The one phrase in Will’s article that made the least sense to me is “the modern trend toward undifferentiated dressing.” It has always struck me, while watching 50s-era baseball highlights, that the fans then largely dressed the same – light colored dress shirt, dark tie, dress hat. The variety available in today’s wardrobe, in textures, colors, patterns, and prints is unquestionably greater than at any other point in history. How can one possibly conclude that we are trending toward undifferentiated dressing?

    Paul-
I love reading Uni Watch. It’s one of the best sites on these here interwebs. Most of the time, this site is a wonderful refuge from the political rancor found everywhere else. Judging by the comments today, there are plenty of readers from both sides of the political divide. They’re here because you’ve provided a common ground where they can talk about what really matters – the evils of purple. Please don’t ruin it by adding politics.

    Paul-
“Canadian Trade-marks Database”, is proper Canadian English. Canada uses more of a British style spelling than the U.S., i.e. colour, flavour . In other words, Canadians Understand the English Language better than Americans do.

I can’t believe there hasn’t been any mention of the Jaguars releasing their new unis. I came here to read some opinions on them. (I don’t care for them at all FWIW)
