New York football Giants equipment director Joe Skiba recently sent me a serious blast from the past: a 1976 Giants program. Naturally, it’s full of interesting tidbits, so let’s take a look:
• Here’s my favorite ad in the program. Love the sight of those two players running around the gridiron with giant musical instruments. Also, it’s interesting to see that the league was marketing the NFL Films music at such an early date.
• And here’s my second-favorite ad.
• Remember when it seemed like every single company on the planet would slap its logo on helmet and jersey to create cheesy ads like this?
• This ad troubles me. The facemask is too short, no? Looks all stubby and Pop Warner and shit. And look, this facemask is even shorter! No wonder the mid-’70s Giants sucked — they couldn’t even control their own brand, much less their own team.
• Why does each photo in this ad show a kid wearing No. 42? Look at the fine print toward the bottom of the page (in case you can’t read it, here’s a larger view).
• Whatever you think of O.J., this is great photo.
• The back of the program has a bunch of really nice Giants illustrations, which I think they’d been using over and over again in every program for years. I grouped about a dozen of them into this gallery.
• Weirdest thing in the program: an illustration of FDR in a National Recovery Act uniform.
• I was stunned by the amount of liquor advertising in the program. Not beer, mind you, but hard liquor. I counted 14 whiskey ads (including one for an industrial-sized bottle), plus three more for gin and two for vodka. But hey, the ’76 Giants, who went 3-11, would’ve driven any fan to drink.
• As for the beer ads, the best one wasn’t even for a particular brand of beer — it was for the local bottle-blowers union. So damn cool.
• And as long as we’re talking about vices, I really liked this cigarette ad, which has the feel of a giant league logo surrounded by lots of smaller team logos.
• I love how this ad boasts that Craig Morton will be showing up at these restaurants “from time to time.” Must’ve been a very loose promotional arrangement.
Doubleplusthanks to Skeebs for bestowing this treasure upon me. I promise to treat well in the months and years to come.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Lots of new pin-up illos from the incomparable Rob Ullman. Among the new treatments: Sixers (commissioned by Sixers PR director Michael Preston), Eages (for Brad Minerd), Orioles (for Katelyn McCann), a Sharks vs. Wild catfight (for Jesse Mullan, who moved from Minnesota to the Bay Area), and Blackhawks (for Dave Zalatoris, who got a tattoo of the illustration!). Rob also did a Penguins portrait of his wife, Brooke, for her birthday (“She criticized me for making her look too good,” he says), plus he created the season’s best St. Paddy’s artwork. ”¦ When Kevin Werther saw Robert Marshall’s Natty Boh cornhole set on Wednesday, he decided to share photos of his own DIY cornhole set, which matches Miami (Ohio) against Ohio State. “At least in cornhole, my Redhawks have a chance at victory against the Bucks!” says Kevin. “I was able to buy custom bags online that matched my set, too.” ”¦ Speaking of Marshall, he rightly took me to task for not including this photo of him in Wednesday’s entry. “Separated at birth?” he asks. “Perhaps. FYI, that shot took about 15 takes to get the timing right. I even bloodied my lip on about take six. I think it was the last shot in this progression. Now that’s dedication.” Quite. ”¦ Survey of English soccer kits here (with thanks to Kent Green). ”¦ The Hofstra roller hockey team is holding a jersey design contest. ”¦ Here’s a new one: TNOL (team name on leg). Those are the Yokohama Baystars. Note the the uni number on the catcher’s helmet, too. The other pant leg just has a partial stripe, no team name (with thanks to, of course, Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Reprinted from Wednesday’s comments: Info on the Panthers’ upcoming third jersey here. ”¦ The Cubs are retiring one number for two players. Interestingly, Ariel Shoshan saw this coming more than a year ago. Back on 2/28/08, he was quoted in the Ticker as follows: “I just returned from a Cubs practice at Hohokam in Mesa. The main gate now features 6 ”˜batting circles’ ”” one is a Cubs logo, and the others are Santo 10, Banks 14, Sandberg 23, Williams 26, and Jenkins 31. The thing is, the Cubs haven’t retired Fergie Jenkins’ number. Fans have long thought that they would retire 31 for Fergie and Maddux when the time came, à la Berra and Dickey.” Hmmm, wonder if they’ve now added a designation for Maddux. ”¦ New football uniforms for North Dakota (with thanks to Kelly Hellman). ”¦ A few days ago I linked to Jordan Wiley‘s listing of the best logo treatment for each letter of the alphabet. At the time, I said, “I wish he’d put all his letter choices side by side in one big composite alphabet (get working on that pronto, Jordan!),” and now he’s done just that. ”¦ The Gwinnett Braves, relocated from Richmond, have an inaugural logo, which is a disaster of clashing typefaces. ”¦ “I was at the Rochester Amerks vs. Manitoba Moose game on Wednesday night,” writes Chris Markham. “There’s a scrolling billboard of ads, one of them for a company that does day trips down to NYC to watch the Mets or Yankees. I guess they’re not too fond of the Mets’ new stadium name.” ”¦ Super-cool 1959 Steelers program available here. Note that the little symbol at upper-left appears to be the Pittsburgh bicentennial logo (nice find by Larry Wiederecht). ”¦ Joe Barker has been fixating on the Blues’ goalies, both of whom wear pre-Edge socks (yes, I know lots of other goalies do this as well, because the Edge socks are so slick that the leg pads won’t stay put). First, Chris Mason: home, road, alternate. And now Manny Legace: home, road, alternate. ”¦ Todd Radom and I celebrated our respective 45th birthdays (his was a few weeks ago, mine is tomorrow) by having lunch on Wednesday at Peter Luger, where our steak for two hit the spot and then some. Among other things, I learned that Todd had designed last month’s NBA All-Star logo, which I hadn’t realized. ”¦ And speaking of weekday diversions,my friend Shane and I drove out to New Jersey yesterday to do a bit of pin-bashing at my favorite bowling establishment. I love the name, natch, but that’s really just a small part of the attraction, what with the super-cool parking lot sign, the bowling-themed stained glass, and the four picture-perfect lanes in the back room. Toss in a few post-bowling rippers at Rutt’s Hut and you’ve got a perfect day. ”¦ Would you trust this electrician? “I know that there are many varieties of three-prong plugs around the world, but I’ve never seen one with that configuration,” says James Huening, who snapped the photo on his way to work yesterday. ”¦ Crummy photo quality, but it’s interesting to see that the Racine Saint Catherine’s h.s. hoops team wears striped socks. Better photo quality but poorer views of the stripes here and here (with thanks to Chris Burks and Geoff Poole). ”¦ A New Mexico artist named Paho Mann has a great project: He photographs people’s junk drawers and medicine cabinets (you know just what I like, Kirsten). ”¦ The Lusophone Games — the Portuguese equivalent of the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth Games — have unveiled their new logo (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Nick Armstrong notes that Memphis had the following five players on the court at one point yesterday: #1 Willie Kemp, #2 Robert Dozier, #3 Roburt Sallie, #4 Pierre Henderson-Niles, and #5 Antonio Anderson. ”¦ Sensational DIY story, of sorts, here. ”¦ The Knicks didn’t play on St. Paddy’s Day, so they wore green on the 18th. ”¦ Some absolutely amazing — amazing — Steelers/Redskins shots from 1940 can be found here (major discovery by Larry Wiederecht). ”¦ Another logo design contest, this time for the Edmonton Capitals. Details toward the bottom of this page (with thanks to Bill Jones). ”¦ The PGA’s Memphis tournament is changing its name (thanks, Phil). ”¦ Also from Phil: Jockeys who were fined and suspended for wearing advertising patches during the 2005 Kentucky Derby have successfully challenged those sanctions.

This page is great. The bright yellow uniforms, the offensive formation with 7 down lineman and 3 running backs, the old programs – complete with ads for Iron City Beer. Some things will never change.
Looking at the 1940 Steeler roster, only one player with a number above 60. Also, do you think you’ll ever see an NFL roster again with 10 players from either Duquesne or Carnegie Mellon?

Add my thanks to Jordan for the logo alphabet.
I consider myself a fairly bright guy, but this really was the very first time I noticed that the Falcons’ helmet logo was in the shape of an “F.” (Then again, it also took an awful long time to dawn on me that the Expos’ cap / helmet logo was an “M.”)
I’d never have thought the Richmond/Gwinnett Braves could concoct a logo as horrible as link…but by god, they’ve done it! Good fucking riddance to this embarrassment of an organization …there’s no baseball in Richmond for the first season in decades, and somehow it’s an improvement.
Would love to see the photos that those Rob Ullman drawings are based off of…
”She criticized me for making her look too good”
that’s love man
I don’t know what the general view is, but this move to a standardize floor design for March Madness sucks!!. It sucks on a number of fronts – I miss some of the whacky court designs that would be exposed at this time of year – no matter how ugly some were – Greensboro teal and purple and Buffalo’s odd light green one were particularly distinctive – and admittedly particularly ugly .
It also sucks because the NCAA has chosen one ugly court design. The centre court logo looks always as if the placement of “NCAA” was done by a child playing pin the “NCAA” on the donkey, and I find it less than easy to tell where the games are coming from, as a result of the black and blue combo, which is not an attractive combo – at least have white outline.

Rob, I used to live in Richmond earlier this decade…I had no idea the R-Braves moved. Probably for the best as they were not a very popular draw. I used to bag work and go take in a game from time to time, never a problem getting a seat behind the dugouts. Then when the ballpark got flooded out from Gaston, putting the kibosh on the remainder of the 2004 season I pretty much stopped going for good.
And they couldn’t have found a more depressing location for the park…of course, if they rebuilt it, they would have done so way the F out in Short Pump or something with lots of fountains.
Well, I wouldn’t want to post anyone else’s photos without permission, but here a link of my link…
Hmmm… looking at those green Knicks outfits, you have to wonder whether the NBA deliberately planned an off day for them on St. Patricks Day, hoping they wouldn’t wear them.
What’s up with wearing green in honor of St Patrick’s day the day after the fact? It’s like dressing up like Santa Clause on December 26th, or having a Superbowl party the Monday after. Aside from that, these uniforms look ridiculous.
Paul, how come you’re ripping into the ‘Los’* movement every chance you got, but you’re letting this one slide?
From a political standpoint the orange and green combo is interesting, though. Green is the color of the Irish republic, where the predominant religion is Catholicism. Orange on the other hand is the color of a Protestant fraternity that is pretty big in Northern Ireland. And just this difference of opinion between the Catholics who want to join up with the Irish Republic, and the Protestants who like it in the UK was at the basis of the mess that Northern Ireland used to be (and sometimes still is). Even now, the yearly Orange marches through catholic neighborhoods in Northern Irish cities sometimes lead to riots. Maybe the Knicks just wanted to show that ornage and green don’t have to clash… but in that case they failed miserably.
… and sorry for the typos

Richmond Magazine allowed me to do link a few years back…suffice to say, I agree with your assessment of the situation. I live in Bellevue, less than two miles away from the Diamond, and I only went to two games in five years. Lousy product, lousy atmosphere, everything.
There’s actually an initiative afoot to build a park in Shockhoe Bottom, but this being Richmond, don’t expect any progress to be made for at least a decade.

That comic was awesome. However, you made the bus station look like Shangri-La in comparison to its actual disgusti-tude.
Shockoe Bottom should be condemned, although my bias is showing as I lived and hung out in the Fan and as such thought I was better than the VCU students getting shitfaced down by the river. It’s no place for a stadium down there.
Are the Richmond Riverdogs still down there? When I first came to Richmond I interviewed with the team for a job. Rod Langway, the coach at the time, interviewed me.

Dan,
Thanks for being a good sport about Wabash. I will say, I have enjoyed my visits to Case Western (the wins probably have a large part to do with that) but I think you all would fare better against UW Whitewater than we have. But all that aside, I don’t particularly enjoy the ‘Modern” uni’s that Wabash now adorns, but they look a lot better than some of the other D3 teams out there

The ad in the Jints program for the NFL Films music was the one I used to order my first album. I think they put out four LPs before coming out with the CD “The Power and the Glory” about 10 years ago, followed up by a CD box set that came out about three years ago.
The CD box set, “Autumn Thunder” is a must-have for any NFL Films music fan. The early stuff, mostly done by Sam Spence is priceless and some of the more modern stuff is decent, but not in the great 70’s Spence style.

Oregon State ran it early in Terry Baker’s career but switched to the T-formation because of his skills.
Kilmer being drafted by the 49ers led coach Red Hickey to develop the “shotgun” formation, allowing Kilmer and the other Niner QB’s to pass from a deep set on occasion. So, in a way, the shotgun is about the only remnant of the single wing we see today.

Major college, perhaps, but Keith Piper at Dennison U.(Div.III) continued to use the single wing until 1969! It was very effective and he won a lot of games with it – hard to prepare for it if even opposing coaches had never seen it!

Tom Landry was transitioning his O-line and felt Roger needed some help. It got them to Super Bowl X.
The Western Kentucky player was Valdez-Mendez (not Gomez-Mendez) so there was another letter in his high arcing nameplate.
And the reason the NCAA is going to standardized courts is that some of those decals were getting so big and they were very slippery. We hosted at Marquette a few years back (I was the media director for the event) and the NCAA logo was like 1/4 the length of the court because we had such a big center court logo.
I didn’t like it when they went to all four regional courts last year, but I’m finding myself like it if they use it throughout the tournament. I’m not going to miss Taco Bell Arena’s floor. However, the Wachovia Center kept it’s Sixers floor with the big center court decal and floor colored decal over the NBA three point line. That just looks bad all around.

Agreed. That one for Ambassador Scotch is pretty sweet too.
The ads in the Giants program are terrific. I remember that magazines in those days had plenty of ads for smokes & liquor (and none for pharmaceuticals). One of the liquor ads worked on me enough that I occasionally ordered Campari and Soda in my early twenties. Even once bought a bottle of Wolffschmidt Vodka once – real rotgut stuff.

While UCLA and Oregon State ran the single-wing, they employed a balanced line. Princeton, however, under Charlie Caldwell, employed it with an unbalanced line and often used the bucklateral series in which three backs handled the ball on one play.

Paul,
Are you able to confirm or deny the rumors about Jacksonville getting new unis for 2009? I completely understand that more often than not you are required to keep quiet about such things until there is a team/league announcement.
And I’m not really looking for design specifics, just a yea or nay on the change. Unless you can say something like “minor changes” or “radical changes.”
Normally, I would be excited about a uniform change, but I just got a Jags jersey for Xmas, and it might now be obsolete.

While UCLA and Oregon State ran the single-wing, they employed a balanced line. Princeton, however, under Charlie Caldwell, employed it with an unbalanced line and often used the bucklateral series in which three backs handled the ball on one play.
Oh, man, forgot about that.
Numbers owe a lot to the single wing, too. Quarterbacks (who largely were lead blockers) wore numbers in the teens, halfbacks in the 20s and 30s and tailbacks in the 40s…most of the time, anyway. Terry Baker, for example, wore #47 his Oregon State sophomore year as a single wing tailback. For his junior and senior seasons as a t-formation quarterback he changed to #11.
I think Sid Luckman changed numbers with the Bears when they switched to the T. Also explains Charlie Conerly’s #42 with the Giants. He didn’t change from his typical tailback number, even though he was, I believe, the Giant’s’ first T quarterback.

That offensive formation appears to be the single-wing wherein the QB was mostly a blocker. The deep back was commonly called the tailback and did a good deal of the running and passing.
UCLA, with Billy Kilmer at tailback, was the last major NCAA team to run the single wing regularly…I believe. The tailback did virtually ALL the passing (what there was of it) in the single wing. Keep mind that the Giants didn’t switch directly from the single-wing to the T. Under coach Steve Owen they ran both the single-wing (B formation) and a different direct-snap set (A formation); ultimately the B was dropped and the A became the
choice of formations.

Yes, a change is coming. And the jersey you just got for Xmas is way better than the one that will replace it.
Cubs, #31: for one thing, to me this is just indicative of the ongoing and accelerating trend of retiring too many numbers. And why didn’t you retire Fergie’s number years ago guys?
NCAA standard floors: this should have been done years and years and years ago. And those #$%& decals are a definite safety hazard: just ask the world-class marathon runner who won the Chicago Marathon about 5 years ago and slipped on the sponsor decal placed precisely at the finish line. IIRC he spent the night in the hospital being monitored for concussion.
Phil: BTW, my last comment yesterday contained a failed attempt to italicize the word “almost”, which would have made my humorous intent a little more obvious.
Last night Capitals rookie goal simeon varlamov wore a mask that was designed in half. Basically half of it was a caps design and half was hershey bears, never seen anything like it.

SINGLE WING IN THE 1970s
I played Bantam/Playground football in New Orleans in the late 1960’s through 1972 – my playground still used the Single Wing as the primary offense for almost all weights and ages teams through 1972 – when I left. The “QB” was really the fullback/blocking back that called the signals prior to the snap, and the TB handled the ball on almost every play. The “draw play” was a direct snap to the QB/blocking back.
We would use the (new-fangled for 1972) “T” Formation on the goal line.
EVEN BETTER…..
Into the 1980s there was a Louisiana high school, I believe Catholic HS – Pointe Coupee, that used the Notre Dame Box as its primary offense. The school used it for several decades, through several coaches, and was written about each year due to the oddity of using the “Sandskrit” of offenses. If I’m not mistaken they regularly made the playoffs running that offense.
For Oakville Endive (post #11) or anyone else interested in the floor designs of the NCAA tourney, we’re having a running discussion link. We would love to see you there if anyone here thinks we’re being off-topic.

Say it ain’t so
Let me guess – they’re going to go with black unis full time, and well the teal as it’s passe, will be replaced by blue, and maybe the gold will be replaced by silver – and the uni will have a big ugly white side panel – and it will look more XFL than NFL – and the big three (Buffalo, Cincinnati and Seattle) will become the big four – something to look forward to for sure

I didn’t like it when they went to all four regional courts last year, but I’m finding myself like it if they use it throughout the tournament. I’m not going to miss Taco Bell Arena’s floor. Soccer Report (move along if you’re not interested). The MLS season began last night.
New feature (well, new to MLS, I do believe) on the New York Red Bulls’ new shirts for 2009 – link. New York’s uniforms have had that Red Bull logo nonsense on them for a few years now, but link was always fairly traditional. Now it’s got that strange collar.
Like NFL jerseys have become, MLS jerseys seem to have too many things adorning them these days. Club badge, adidas logo, adidas three stripes, American flag, shirt sponsor…and Columbus should have link on theirs. Seattle didn’t have an inaugural season or inaugural match patch on theirs, to their credit.
Some New York players wore link in the chill of Seattle, while some went with link. Juan Pablo Angel of New York started that way, then lost the undershirt after the first half.
Seattle had a mix of link and link.
The teams apparently will all be sporting a link (I’m told Toronto FC will have a Canadian flag) this year as well, but neither of the goalkeepers in last night’s season opener had flags. One, Seattle’s Kasey Keller, was the captain, so he had the captain’s armband link.
Seattle’s link is a different look. I think they go blue/green/blue away from home. They’re a little too form-fitting (at least some players were wearing them tight), but not nearly as tight as link from a few years back.
Portland will be announced as the league’s 18th club later today, two days after Vancouver was announced. Both will likely keep their existing names, which harken back to the days of the NASL.

A few things about the memorabilia on that page. Yes, the team were the Pirates in 1934, when they had the yellow sweaters with the black stripes and the City of Pittsburgh crest in the middle.
The pro rules allowed head slaps back then, evidently not knowing the kinds of neurological damage that can occur through frequent concussions. What were they thinking?
Same thing with the elimination of the rule that the ball was dead when any part of the body other than the hand or foot touches the ground (which meant that you had to wrestle a player to the ground and stop all forward motion).
A clip was a 25-yard penalty? In truth, why not make all personal fouls a “third-of-the-field” penalty like in Aussie Rules? They have 50-meter penalties for major fouls on a 170-meter pitch. Just a thought.
I wonder if there is a long-form version of the song used in “Lombardi”?
(johnfacenda)It speaks of duels in the snow and cold November mud.(/johnfacenda)
That snow game was pretty ridiculous. The weather and Wabash’s playing.

One question for all the experts here: those are drawings, correct?
I have to wonder if any of the artists ever wrote a tell-all on some of the weird instructions/commissions for those ads. :-)
Advertising and sports? I couldn’t give a date, but IMHO it’s part of the drive to give major leagues a “family” image. (Again, please hold the jokes; I know how silly that sounds in a A-Rod type of world.)

You sure picked an unfortunate time to come into town for a day if you’re looking for sports related things. It’ll be pretty dead tomorrow. No Pitt, Pirates, Pens or Steelers games to speak of. :-(
Anyway here goes.
Lunch – Primanti Brothers (A Pittsburgh Icon).
Stop into Jerome Bettis’ Grill 36 for a drink. The food isn’t anything to write home about but the bathroom alone will give you something to talk about back home. ;-)
Do take a ride up one of the two inclines. You’ll be pleasantly suprised at the gorgeous view.
If you are looking to quench your sports jones, the Heinz History Center which Paul visited recently has some good memorabilia from the area. It’s also a short distance from Primanti’s.
Other museums include, the Science Center, The Warhol, Carnegie Museum in the Oakland section of town (Nice collection of dinosaurs)
Sorry, Kennywood is not open (You won’t have to check your zipper…ask someone in town. They’ll clue you in on the joke)
Plenty o’bars in the South Side of town. Be careful…it attracts a young crowd. Smokin’ Joe’s is one down the road with lots of great beer. If you just want a typical shot and a beer joint, Dee’s Cafe.
Do not go to any Station Square or Strip District clubs at night.
As for Morgantown, the best thing you’ll see will be the reflection of your red lights as you leave. One good thing for you the Mountaineers lost today so there may or may not be a mass couch burning!!!!

thanks for the info.
Among other things, I am a field/court design junkie, so I’ve paid close attention to the incremental changes we’ve seen in the court designs in the NCAA tournament. It all started with the most recent deal the NCAA made with Connor Sport Court, who provides the court for the Final Four and have for years. The new deal was expanded to include the Regional sites for both Mens and Womens. The mens deal started a couple years ago, the womens deal last year. This year they seem to be providing the courts for certain subregional sites, possibly ones that are considered to be part of the regular rotation (Boise, Portland) or future Regional sites (KC, GBoro). As for the color scheme (black with a greenish blue), it’s probably because it looks better on TV.
Weirdest thing in the program: an illustration of FDR in a National Recovery Act uniform.
Not so much…I recall my high school U.S. history textbook mentioning the NRA’s eagle logo — which inspired the new NFL team in Philadelphia to name itself the Eagles.
Should have made clear that “NRA”, in the context of my previous post, stood for “National Recovery Act”, one of FDR’s New Deal programs.
I went to the Vintage patch site to check out the patches for my beloved STEELERS and the helmet caption for the Steelers has the logo on the left side. Very LAME!

The Humpydome is using their in-house UM court, and AAA in MIA is using FIU’s court. The Wachovia is either using their regular court in Villanova mode or a generic one, and Dayton’s court is permanent. And while I don’t know who actually paid for them, the Rose Garden, Sprint Center, Taco Bell Arena, and GBoro Coliseum are likely using new Connors, since the NCAA probably has that layout exclusively licensed to them.
Again, as I mentioned in my first comment, those 4 arenas were probably either encouraged to get those courts or were given them by the NCAA, since they are probably going to be in the rotation for Subregionals and Regionals for a while. Also, with GBoro and KC being hosted by a conference, instead of a school, it makes sense for them to have the “standard” court.
speaking of NCAA tournament displays, the scorer’s table during Louisville/Morehead State displayed “NCAA Opening Round” over the center line, then reverted to “NCAA First/Second Round” for Siena/Ohio State.
(“Opening Round” was Tuesday’s game; the First Round was/is Thursday/Friday.)

They were probably recycling the Morehead State display from Tuesday, since they were the road team for that game and on the same side of the court. They remembered to replace Alabama State with Louisville, but I guess they forgot to change the “opening”.

I was thinking that the “Change” on the back should be vertically arched instead of radially arched, to match the “Bulls” style on the front of their more recent unis, but then I thought that “Change” might be mimicking the NOBs, or it could be trying to shoot for this:

Still, I think the “Change” letters aren’t spaced far enough apart to reflect either radially arched example accurately. Hmm. Still a sweet cap.
