Clean ’Plate Club

Picture 1.png

Okay, so the Pittsburgh party report will have to wait, because something really interesting happened late on Monday night (too late for me to write about it in time for yesterday). I promise we’ll get to all the Pittsburgh stuff tomorrow, but today I want to deal with this scene that went down in Texas two nights ago.

Here’s the deal: We all know college and high school coaches, across all sports, sometimes like to “punish” their players and/or emphasize team unity by going NNOB (Illinois hoops coach Bruce Weber has already announced his intention to keep the team NNOB next season). Back in 2000, Colorado football coach Gary Barnett went further, removing the team logo from the players’ helmets after an 0-4 start.

All of which is easy enough when it’s just a matter of peeling off a helmet decal or tearing off a nameplate. But what do you do if you want to go NNOB in the middle of the season and your NOB lettering is direct-sewn?

The answer was on display in Monday night’s Baylor/Texas basketball game, as the Bears — who normally have gold NOBs — wore blank green nameplate strips that covered up their NOBs (you can see several additional photos here).

The move was initiated by coach Scott Drew after the team lost eight out of nine during a one-month stretch that ended last Tuesday. Their first NNOB game was apparently a home game on Saturday against Colorado, although I can’t tell if they used blank white nameplates or had new NNOB jerseys produced for the occasion (here’s another inconclusive view). In any case, they won that game, but they lost the game against the Longhorns, so they’re now 1-1 in their NNOB phase. Their next game is Saturday afternoon, at home, so let’s see if we can get a better view of those white jerseys.

Personally, I think the cover-up nameplates look like shit. But it’s worth noting that eight of the team’s 14 players have surnames of five letters or fewer, so at least most of the green strips are mercifully small.

(Big thanks to Glenn Stern, Glenn Chavez, and Peter Mastrella for tipping me wise to this one.)

On a serious note”¦: As you may be aware, the newspaper industry is in even worse condition than the rest of the economy. That situation dealt a body blow to the Uni Watch family yesterday, as bench coach emeritus Bryan Redemske was a casualty of the latest staff reduction at the Omaha World-Herald.

Bryan’s a talented writer and editor, plus he has a teaching degree (along with an 18-month-old son and a mortgage, if you get my drift). He’s also a totally stand-up guy, a kick-ass cyclist, and my friend. I’m pretty sure he’ll land on his feet, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t welcome a helping hand along the way. If you have any work opportunities for him or want to see his résumé, please give him a holler. Thanks.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The glossary of uni-centric terms that first appeared in my most recent ESPN column now has its own page here on this site (go ahead and bookmark it, because at the moment there’s nothing else linking to it). I’ve added a few additional terms to it and will continue to add to it as new terms present themselves. ”¦ I’ve also recently updated the FAQ page, which was badly out of date. ”¦ Here’s the awesome 1974 NHL bedsheet I recently won on eBay. Nice of them to render the Kings’ logo in blue instead of purple, just for me. ”¦ Small gallery of soccer NOB typos, several of which we’ve covered before, here (with thanks to Denis Hurley). ”¦ In honor of the Steelers’ sixth Super Bowl championship, Heinz has come out with a commemorative ketchup six-pack. Interesting that they designated each championship by its regular-season calendar year, rather than by its Super Bowl number, which I’m guessing is because they didn’t want to pay the added licensing fee. If you’re dying to spend $35 plus shipping on six bottles of ketchup, you can do so here until the beginning of the next NFL season (big thanks to Pittsburgh’s own Jennifer Baron). ”¦ Also from Jennifer: The economic stimulus package apparently includes funds targeted to help preserve Tiger Stadium. ”¦ In a related item, did you know that the economic recovery effort now has its own logo? The stars on the white field symbolize, of course, the NFL, while the green sprout represents legalized marijuana and the gears stand for the triumph of mechanized socialism, wheee! I’m not quite sure how anyone could design a logo for a $787 billion program and neglect to include a dollar sign, but maybe that symbolizes the fact that we’re all broke. Say what you want, but it’s a shitload better than this. ”¦ There’s someone on Flickr who reeaallly likes Umbro. He’s got an excellent logo gallery and a ton of jersey photos (with thanks to Jeremy Gooch). ”¦ And the same guy has an Umbro blog (with thanks to Timothy O’Malley). ”¦ Interesting article here about the merchandising of basketball jerseys in general, and Purdue’s in particular (with thanks to Tyson Vaughn). ”¦ Yesterday I linked to two photos of Mike Williams and his unusual NOB. Here’s the other Williams from that squad, Clarence. So now we have three examples of the late-’70s Chargers using the “Name, Initial” format: the two Williamses and Gary “Big Hands” Johnson. I’ve gotta say, I had no idea they were doing this until these images recently surfaced (with thanks to Eric Stangel for the Clarence Williams shot). ”¦ Here’s something I hadn’t seen before: a prep school hockey player with a Windows logo jersey. “I’m guessing this is for a traveling team,” says Nick Houser, “because his high school colors are blue and silver and their mascot is the Patriots.” ”¦ Also from Nick: According to this page, the Blue Jackets have been wearing green St. Patty’s Day practice jerseys with “shamrock patches and Irish-themed nameplates.” I don’t even want to ask what that last part means. ”¦ Jon McCue notes that Seton Hall’s baseball team uses white type on a grey jersey — unusual. ”¦ Yesterday I linked to some pics from the Gaelic Athletic Association’s museum in Ireland, which prompted John Moist to remember that he’d taken a bunch of his own photos while visiting there last year. He got some really good jersey photos, which I’ve grouped into this short slideshow. ”¦ Great stirrups, even if they’re backwards. That’s Dodgers prospect Ivan DeJesus, who, unfortunately, is done for the year (with thanks to Dylan Horowitz). ”¦ Really nice old Montana stadium blanket here. ”¦ What’s that on the left sleeve of the Canadian WBC team? It’s an ad patch for Canadian hardware chain — and it’s bigger than their WBC logo patch. ”¦ Lots of great old Hershey Bears photos available if you click through the pages of this book (with thanks to Jerry Wolper). ”¦ You probably know that the Indians wore these jerseys in 1921. Interestingly, most of the Tribe players in this team portrait had their arms folded, obscuring the word “Champions” (good find by Kenny Crookston). ”¦ After Johnny “Red” Kerr and Norm Van Lier both died last Thursday, the Bulls added a black shoulder band. But now they’ve ditched the black band and replaced it with a patch, which I think we can all agree looks pretty nice. ”¦ Cliff Rancho pointed me toward this baseball card. Note the stats on the back — “B.H.” presumably stands for base hits, but what does “P.C.” stand for? Oh, and that same blog has some great old Kingdome program scans. ”¦ Jesse Gavin checked in with some observations from the Iowa High School Girls’ State Basketball Tourney, including one team wearing white-on-white type, a game featuring two teams with black sneakers and black socks (boy does that look like crap), a girls’ team called the Norsemen, and a pep band with killer socks. ”¦ Remember the Party Posse episode of The Simpsons? That’s the first thing I thought of when Dan Baer showed me this. ”¦ The Lakers did the Los Lakers thing last night against Memphis. … The Sixers are returning to the Spectrum for one last game, complete with a throwback court design (with thanks to Michael Lipinski).

Ok, I am on the fence about this 76ers thing. I think the idea is a great idea in the sense of reliving memories for the fans and the organization. On the other hand in these tough times isnt it kinda stupid to waste the time creating a floor for ONE F-ing game?

On the old baseball card, “P.C.” might stand for “Per Cent” – what we’d call batting average.

    That’s what it is. 61/295 = 0.207.

Very sorry to hear about Brian’s layoff.

It is sad to watch what is happening to print newspapers. The web is great, but there’s nothing like opening up your paper in the morning. It’ll be interesting to see what all these web sites do when there is no news from the newspapers to put on the sites.

I hope things turn around and people realize what they’re about to lose, and what they’re missing by not reading and buying newspapers. People who don’t read newspapers are just plain uninteresting.

The NNOB talk has brought back memories of a NLOF (No Logo On Front) game I witnessed some years ago when Loyola New Orleans came to Houston for a basketball game in 1972 not long after it was announced that the LNO program was being disbanded. The Loyola players had taken the lettering off their jerseys and played with only numbers on the back. I remember that us Houston students wondered what the deal was until word got around Hofheinz Pavilion.
One of the Loyola guys transfered to UH the next year and became a friend. LNO cranked up basketball again in the 90s. I wish I had pictures of that NLOF game.

    Paul:

I finally got an answer to the Pilots alleged double-knit jersey…..

It was a homemade baseball card and the picture was Photoshopped.

Sorry about bringing that up and wasting your time.

That jersey does look good though.

Now you tell me. I’m taking that out of the Ticker.

The Umbro blog is actually from link, so are the archives on Flikr, which you linked to on Feb 18th. They are currently running an entry on the design of the new link being released on March 28th.

Interesting that there is no logo for the fledgling Capitals team on the bedspread…

Does it not mean what the author says at the end?
“What says St. Patrick’s Day like an McTyutin or O’Hejda jersey?”

Well that’s just great! That 3.8 million going to the old Tiger Stadium will certainly help get this economy turned around! Glad that there are so many economically uplifting projects in that stimulus bill!

    no, that’s just sad…kids today

/on another note, that’s really terrible news about bryan…the slow death of the print medium continues, and this only brings that a little closer to home; all the best to you buddy, and im sure a man with your talents will find himself in high demand, even in this shitty economy

    Keep your chin up, Redemske.

I don’t think the 1983 Sixers court had a giant “Wachovia” logo at center court. Shameless.

    link

I’m a huge fan of NNOB jerseys — I want old-fashioned simplicity, with a number on the back and nothing else — but covering up existing nameplates means that the number is totally off-center vertically and looks awful.

Just wait until the next season and make some proper number-only jerseys.

(Can I editorialize for a moment? I don’t like the term “NNOB”. It implies that having a name on the back is the default and somehow standard. I realize that the majority of high-level teams have this today, but “number-only” is more neutral. Start saying “number-only”!)

“I don’t think the 1983 Sixers court had a giant “Wachovia” logo at center court. Shameless.”

Unfortunately, by today’s standards, that’s what passes for “updating a classic look.” Or so they keep trying to get us to believe, anyway.

What’s even scarier is that some people actually BUY that notion, that adding sponsor names or flat-out ad patches is contemporary, cool and forward-looking.

    —Ricko

I think it’s cool that the Sixers are playing a final game at the Spectrum, sponsorship logos et al not withstanding. I wish more teams would do this. I was hoping the Jets would play one last game at Shea this season. Was that ever discussed? I think it would have been cool!

Cool – thanks for the link.

I complained pretty loudly about the new England crest. Still hate the shirt badge’s lighter color, but at least the revised Tudor roses have some link.

I’m just really hoping that link isn’t the new England shirt after all.

I’d love to see ‘Ditch the Black’ added to the uni-centric glossary. I know it’s suppose to reference only the Mets, but it sure can be applied to a whole bunch of other teams. Say, the Detroit Lions, Knicks, various D-I hoops and football teams, ad nauseum…

Looks like “stimulus package” is in the road to becoming the most overused advertising gimmick this side of Ebenezer Scrooge at Christmas. Ooops…sorry, the Holidays.

The Dominican Republic jerseys seem to have some sort of ad patch on it as well – at least from what I could tell with tape from an interview with A-Fraud the other day

Repeating a comment from yesterday — I posted it so late in the day that I think very few people saw it.

Colorado Rapids have posted a photo gallery featuring their new 2009 kits here. (Click the link and then “2009 Rapids marketing photo shoot”).

    link

Same basic colors and design as last year, but they’ve removed the “Rapids” wordmark from the home shirts and “Colorado” from the roadies, a pretty radical change. Only thing on the front now is the club crest (and of course the Adidas logo, alas). Hopefully that’s not just to clear space for the addition of a shirt sponsor.

They say there’s an American flag on the left sleeve, but in the photo gallery it’s only visible on the away shirts.

Someone came up with this one about 30 years ago. There was a t-shirt you could by at Stan’s (under the el at the Stadium) with the logo, “Super Team” et al.

What a callback. I remember having about twenty pairs of Umbros (shorts) back in high school.

(Of course, I also remember wearing Hypercolor and pinch-rolling my jeans, so…)

good luck Bryan! welcome to the world of the Unemployed. We’re a big club and getting bigger every day! 10 months for me now…gives me plenty of time to spend surfing the web and reading UW though. So there’s that.

I think the idea of identifying stimulus-package projects with a logo is particularly link.

A great move, when we start seeing that logo displayed on new bridges and roads.

I’m assuming the Sixers couldn’t play a game at the Wachovia Spectrum without it being called as such. I love the fact that they are doing this, i’m a sad i can’t go because i’ll be in Clearwater watching the Phils.

Just a theory on the Heinz use of seasons in favor of “Super Bowl”. I’m pretty sure there is a separate licensing fee for use of SB. I’m not sure have licensing rights to a club mark gives you the same access to other NFL marks.

It is funny how they created different logos for each by simply moving around the lettering.

Saw the new Obama logo, and the first thing that caught my eye was the fact that the cogs weren’t connected. Basically to me that said, “sure the economy is crappy, but we won’t get it back on track because even our logo designer doesn’t think all the pieces fit.” Not exactly the sign of hope I’m looking for in this crappy economy. Secondly, just wondering how much they spent to have this logo designed. Couldn’t that tax money have been used for better things?

Part of the problem with the economy right now is confidence. Visually reminding people where their money’s going can boost that confidence.

It’s a link. Sorta like a bar code for the 21st century. Take a picture of it with your smart phone, and the phone converts the image into a weblink. Presuming that the link is to the FA’s page.

I love the fact that the Sixers are playing in the Spectrum. I think more teams should play in their old arena/stadium before it’s torn down. It would create a buzz around town and no doubt sell tickets.

When the Dodgers went back to the LA Coliseum for one game to celebrate their move to Los Angeles 115,000 people bought tickets.

The Giants still have a chance to use Yankee stadium.

A few years ago at the Mets “Jewish” day, they had Russ Salzberg (local sports reporter)introduce the team with “Yiddish” names. Mike Piazza was introduced as “Moishy” Piazza, etc. It was pretty tedious, until they got to Benny Agbayani, who was introduced as — wait for it — “Benny” Agbayani. That got a pretty good laugh from the crowd.

In sum, you are right to dread Passover jerseys.

The Stadium also had the four smaller logos on either side of the free-throw lines. Supposedly, they were not going to be included on the UC’s court until the coaching staff objected. Reason? They used those logos for drawing up plays.

I agree that the current court blows compared to the old one. The black outline doesn’t bother me so much (actually, I kind of like the way it contrasts with the red paint in the 3-second lane), but I hate that font. And that crappy basketball design behind the bull’s head at center court is an eyesore.

With the Blackhawks, it’s a push. The logo filling the entire circle at center ice looks much better than the Stadium’s two tiny logos to either side of the center line. Unfortunately, the advertisements on the ice negate any aesthetic imporvement.

Harold Ballard (Toronto’s owner at the time) was an enormous dick. He probably demanded too much money to use the Leafs’ logo.

Not necessarily. I remember having this discussion last year when they did the Noche Latina thing. Coupla things:

First, something that’s lower in the front and higher in the back presents a sense of forward motion.

Second, your leg is bulge-y toward the back, because of your calf, but it’s flat/straight/etc. in the front, so the wider opening in the back helps accommodate the added musclulature.

BYU @ Wyoming right now on the MTN, all of the Wyoming cheerleaders are wearing a garter that looks to be part of their actual uniform (it matches the rest of the brown and yellow they’re wearing). I can’t say I’ve ever seen that before.

    pics?

To anyone who has the UNC-VT game on TiVo:

With a couple of minutes to go, the announcers were ranting and raving about how Hansbrough had a hole on the back of his jersey, and how it signified his tough style of play.

right on top of things, eh james?

    post of the evening ;)

When I said earlier that the high stirrup in back was to avoid cutting across the Achilles, I meant way, way back…when the sanis were barely visible at all.

Look at a foot in profile. Imagine a very, very early stirrup sock, cut in front just across the top of the instep. Now imagine the rear stirrup cut the same height. The back one cuts across the Achilles tendon and, in fact, is even so low as to be inside the heel of a typical shoe. That was a blister waiting to happen (and they did), and we don’t want blisters. Especially not with dyed, colored socks rubbing against them. Eventually they figured out that cutting the back stirrup slightly higher to reach above the shoe would elminate that situation.

That’s how it started, and as socks got a bit higher, the tradition held. Then as socks got pulled even higher and higher, the difference in the cut just became more and more noticeable.

Orginally, though, it was all about—and nothing more than—keeping the colored sock out of blister area, and that required a different configuration, front and back.

And I know about that which I am speaking about. :) My first pair of stirrups were thick wool and very, very low and my dad ‘splained it to be. And, by golly, he was right. When you put ’em on properly, only the sani came in contact with the shoe at the tongue and at the back of the heel.

Yeah, I remember the good ol’ days of the 76ers when they had that awesome, old school WACHOVIA LOGO ON THEIR COURT! Their name is all over the Wachovia Center and the Spectrum but they can’t be bothered to actually honor a throwback court design by leaving their freaking name off of it?! That, my friends…is logo creep.

I know they don’t do many events in the Astrodome anymore, but I wonder how many Reliant logos would pop up there.

I gotta give your editors a hand for standing up for themselves- as a journalism student (so I’ll be unemployed as of my May 9th graduation), and a former memeber of my school paper’s editorial staff, I not only agree with them but think it takes a lot of balls to stand up to the board like that. Hope they win.

    BREAKING NEWS OUT OF WISCONSIN:

It was just announced on the Madison evening news that the Wisconsin Badgers Men’s hockey team will play the Michigan Wolverines on February 6, 2010 at Camp Randall Stadium! Outdoor hockey is coming back to Wisconsin! (The Badgers and Buckeyes played at Lambeau Field a few years back in the Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic)

Also…where do you think the Badger football team got their inspiration for their “Spring Ball” logo?

Yes, it would. Theft is theft.

Long time reader, first time poster. The Kings blue logo on the bed spread might have been simply a misunderstanding on the manufacturer’s part. Jack Kent Cooke, owner of both the Kings and the Lakers in this period hated the word “purple” and insisted his teams’ colors were “forum blue and gold”. Growing up in Los Angeles, I still remember Bill Miller, the Kings announcer, and Chick Hearn, the Lakers announcer, describing the two teams taking the ice and court in their “forum blue” uniforms. There is actually a good story about it this appropriately titled website: link

The Baylor game with Colorado with the NNOB unis was done the same way as the green jerseys against Texas. It may look like doo-doo to you, but I liked the change, especially if it will make the Bears play like a team.
