Lots of folks have been sending in additional examples of basketball teams wearing untucked jerseys. The best story comes from reader Todd Tompkins, who recently checked in with the following:
This is a picture of my high school basketball team from 1991 at Washington Union High in Fresno. Our coach was so pissed off at us during my freshman year because we kept un-tucking our jerseys when we would get into games. He got tired of yelling at us, I guess, because the next year we wore these. We hated them! We thought they were girls’ uniforms.
We were the only team we saw in California to have these. If I remember correctly, they were micro-mesh and made by Wilson. They only lasted two seasons.
Ah, but if Todd had gone to high school 10 years earlier, he might have seen these uniforms, which were worn by Simi Valley High School (about three and a half hours from Fresno) in the early 1980s. Those shots were sent in by Simi Valley alum Dwayne Archuleta.
As for additional examples:
• If you watch this video clip (contributed by Dwayne Archuleta), you’ll see (a) a really nasty collision that they show over and over and over, and (b) UTEP wearing untucked jerseys. Interestingly, the hemline stripes almost look like a striped waistband on the shorts when viewed from the front, but their true nature becomes easier to see from the side.
• As we’ve seen before, many girls’ and women’s teams went untucked in the late 1970s and early ’80s. For example, Brad Eenhuis notes that the Iowa women’s team went untucked and sleeved in the late ’70s too (as did their opponent in that photo). And they were still untucked in the late 1980s.
• And on the girls’ high school level, Doug Keklak found lots of examples from Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. “My brother and I went to the public school (Greater Johnstown), and he recalls a lot of teams in our area using this style in the girls’ game,” says Doug. “Greater Johnstown used them when he was in school (Class of ’87).”

Stop signs were yellow through the mid-1950s and then began changing over to red. This was when all US road signs began to follow standardized sizes, designs, and colors during the initial interstate highway construction programs.

A mercury spill shut down a whole school? What happened, a wave of mercury pouring from an elevator, like blood in the shining? Seriously, though, my first mental picture from the ticker description was that the mercury was spilled directly ON the unis, so that they couldn’t be worn. When I was in college, some idiot managed to spill a vial of mercury in the science building. I hadn’t seen so many hazmat suits in one place since I watched “Outbreak”. Mercury is some nasty stuff and the authorities really go nuts if there’s a spill.

Ah, how times have changed. When I was a kid, the science teacher had a container of mercury that he used to demonstrate how coins would float on heavy metals.
At some point, I helped myself to a test tube full of the mercury and took it home, where did some floating tests of my own. I held on to that test tube for years.
It went into the attic at some point, and years later I found the test tube broken and the mercury spilled. Oops.

Odd, at my public school, officials turned a blind eye to “heavy metal poisoning” you should have seen the percentage of the student body that wore Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Megadeth T-shirts.

Is there any part of old Shea which was left standing as a monument?
The article on the Bills helmet yesterday gave me the idea to do a Butler helmet for my brother. I went on to eBay and bought a helmet . Its going to need some TLC, but I have a couple buddies who are in the auto body industry to the sandblasting bondo-ing and whatnot shouldn’t be to bad. Here is the kicker. I went on to the butler website and did some goggling and Butler helmets have gone from decals on both sides with stripes down the center and bone pride stickers to stripes and pride stickers only.
This was a bit of an unexpected find, so I called my brother who just so happens to work in the athletic department at Butler to find out what was going on. I had to let him in on what I was doing and asked what was going on. He said (verbatim) that “the decals were shit and started falling off after the first game so they decided to go take them off”. I don’t know if this is going to be a permanent thing or not. I personally like the plain lids. I did get a couple numbers off of him of people to contact about getting decals and such for his present, and hopefully I can find out if they will keep the bulldog decals or not.

It was also stolen, soon after I saw one of the baddest dudes on the football team walking down the halls with my Flag shirt on. 100% sure he was not a fan of the band. I let that slide…
More about the Chicago Wolves jersey issue from last night. The team took the ice for warm-ups wearing their burgundy road jerseys with white (home) and white (home) helmets. For the first period, the team wore the wolf head whites while both goalies wore the alternates. The goalies switch to the normal wolf head jersey for the remainder of the game after the first period. However, during the first, it looked a bit like soccer with the goalies wearing a different jersey.

The basepaths and locations of the pitcher’s mound and home plate will be visible in what will become the parking lot for Citi Field. I though I had read about plans for the old HR Apple to be preserved somewhere, perhaps near the Rotunda?

You could try taping the problem toes, or adding moleskin to the underside of the toe, inside the shoe. Trying to do anything else to alter sneakers yourself is asking to end up with a mighty uncomfortable pair of sneakers…I’m talking DIY plastic inserts and stuff like that.
Personally, I wore soccer cleats to play Ultimate in college. Never had a problem after being stepped on. Maybe you have brittle nails. You might try putting on some nail strengthening clear polish to help fortify the nails, but only if you’re man enough to do so :)

I was staying with my friend’s family in rural Wisconsin. It was early spring (end of March/beginning of April) and I really didn’t think there would be much need for any other type of shoes, so I didn’t pack any.

My Gorton’s sweater is #44 Bertuzzi. I feel far worse about the name on the back than the fisherman on the front. It’s in the waaaaaay back of my closet now, but it got worn to more than a couple Rags-Islanders tilts back in the dark days.

A lot of goalies do that. In fact, it’s probably more notable to see a goalie who does wear team socks. Compression gear, thin socks and sweatpants are the most commonly worn stuff I’ve seen.

I’ve got three “authentic-ish” Bears jerseys (one of each) that I bought on eBay from some dude in Seoul for less than the price of a single replica.
There are some minor issues that I could easily correct with a needle and thread if they really bothered me enough to take action.
As many of you have heard Dodger catcher Russell Martin will be wearing “J. Martin” on the back of his jersey this season in honor of his mother. I may have some spring training pictures of that on the film I took, should know for sure by tomorrow.

In 1997-98 my old Hockey site partner and I submitted a book idea with MANY sample pages to Dan Diamond (Total NHL series), the NHL, and the NFL…

Exact same book. I’ll say it again EXACT SAME BOOK!
Maybe I should get all mad like that ST. Louis Blues rip-off guy. LOL what a crock, he combines the existing logo and the regions biggest/most famous landmark, and has the naivety to think he did something unique. Even the wordmark was stolen from the Blues!
Anyway, here I have submitted an upwards of 15 articles over the past few years here, only to see Paul or someone else ignore them and feature them a week or 2 later as original thought. My bottom line, once you open your mouth about an idea, don’t be surprised to see it somewhere else in the near future.
I have also been looking for the original copies of Sabres Uniforms I sent to them back in 2002 I believe. It is very close to the current alt’s, but the fact that all I did was add silver and the old logo like they use now. There is NO reason for me to get upset;
1) I didn’t trademark anything.
2) Like that Blues guy, I used EXISTING team logo’s and marks. It’s not my work, how can I take credit?
3) I submitted it, and they may have never seen it…silver was an obvious addition.
The UW high-horse gets higher everyday. Good thing there are guys like LI PHIL / TEEBZ / ETC that keep me from hating the smugness around here.

Even funnier than Hemo’s sour grapes, when someone posts a google link, then it’s reposted and the original poster gets all mad like he is responsible for the item actually existing on earth.
Nate Robinson dunked over Biff tonight on the Letterman show tonight wearing the same green uni he did for the dunk contest. He was showing off his shoes to Dave, and Dave asked if they were waterproof. Hahaha. Also, Nate said that Nike, Warner Bros., and DC Comics made the shoes for him. Now, I know his special shoes are called Kryptonates…which is a spoof on kryptonite, which is from Superman, which is owned by WB or something like that. But, why would WB, and DC help in the making of that shoe?
This seems to be the best, most reliable of all the China sites. Wholesalers from around here buy this shuff up like crazy

I find the cover of that New England Whalers program interesting.
It’s obvious the National Anthem is playing, as all the fans are standing and the Whalers, and what appears to be the Indianapolis Racers, are standing at their respective blue lines. What’s curious to me is, usually when the National Anthem (both teams based in USA, so I assume the SSB is the tune of choice) is played, no matter American or Canadian, the teams face the respective country’s flag while the song is in progress. But in this case the Whalers and the refs are facing one direction and the Racers are facing the other. Unless the flag is directly over center ice (which I guess it could be) someone has their backs to the flag. Or maybe that was just the “WHA” way of doing things back then.

The jerseys are Chinese knock-offs. You can find them at convenience/variety stores all over here in Southern Ontario. In most cases they are $40-60 Canadian and the lettering/patches and cresting are far better quality than the $100-140 RBK “repli-thentic\” version. You honestly can’t go wrong with that jersey, my friend got Kane last week for $49.99 and it is beautiful. The WC patch alone looks authentic and worth $20 bucks.[/quote]
