Untucked Redux

Picture 1.png

Lots of folks have been sending in additional examples of basketball teams wearing untucked jerseys. The best story comes from reader Todd Tompkins, who recently checked in with the following:

This is a picture of my high school basketball team from 1991 at Washington Union High in Fresno. Our coach was so pissed off at us during my freshman year because we kept un-tucking our jerseys when we would get into games. He got tired of yelling at us, I guess, because the next year we wore these. We hated them! We thought they were girls’ uniforms.

We were the only team we saw in California to have these. If I remember correctly, they were micro-mesh and made by Wilson. They only lasted two seasons.

Ah, but if Todd had gone to high school 10 years earlier, he might have seen these uniforms, which were worn by Simi Valley High School (about three and a half hours from Fresno) in the early 1980s. Those shots were sent in by Simi Valley alum Dwayne Archuleta.

As for additional examples:

• If you watch this video clip (contributed by Dwayne Archuleta), you’ll see (a) a really nasty collision that they show over and over and over, and (b) UTEP wearing untucked jerseys. Interestingly, the hemline stripes almost look like a striped waistband on the shorts when viewed from the front, but their true nature becomes easier to see from the side.

• As we’ve seen before, many girls’ and women’s teams went untucked in the late 1970s and early ’80s. For example, Brad Eenhuis notes that the Iowa women’s team went untucked and sleeved in the late ’70s too (as did their opponent in that photo). And they were still untucked in the late 1980s.

• And on the girls’ high school level, Doug Keklak found lots of examples from Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. “My brother and I went to the public school (Greater Johnstown), and he recalls a lot of teams in our area using this style in the girls’ game,” says Doug. “Greater Johnstown used them when he was in school (Class of ’87).”

Thanks to all the contributors. I’ll keep running untucked updates as circumstances warrant.

Pittsburgh Party Update: Schedule change for the Pittsburgh get-together. It will now take place on Sunday, March 1st, at 1pm. As for the venue, a very large computer is even now preparing a sophisticated algorithm to help determine the optimal site, but at the moment the front-runners are Max’s, Sarney’s, and Pollock’s. Stay tuned.

Raffle Reminder: Today’s the last day for the Colors raffle. Details here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Major find here: More than 30 years before the green dot, there was the yellow dot. “That’s a screen grab from the 1976 ’Skins highlight film,” says Larry Wiederecht. “Knowing George Allen, he probably handed them out as motivation to beat Dallas that day.” Either that or it was a play on Gerry Ford’s “WIN” buttons, which were in vogue around that time. ”¦ Super-cool old Plexiglas faceguard was auctioned off yesterday (with thanks to Brendon Yarian). ”¦ Michael Orr spotted these socks at a high school basketball state playoff game between R.B. Stall High (North Charleston) and Dreher High (Columbia, SC). ”¦ Remember the proposed new Eagle County logo from yesterday? Doug Brei notes that it looks familiar. ”¦ Hmmmm, this is interesting. That less-offensive Citi Field logo was supposedly only going to be used on merch sold at Citi Field, but hey, maybe MLB.com has a server tucked away on the press level or something. And no, I don’t think this means they’re changing the sleeve patch on the jerseys (with thanks to Brian Erni). ”¦ Would you shave off all your hair and wear an ad tattoo on your scalp, just for a plane ticket to New Zealand? These people did. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Loads of cool old Orioles spring training pics here. ”¦ Sigh. ”¦ More old-school NYC letterboxes here (with thanks to Ken Clark, although I really should have known about that page, since I’m a big fan of the Forgotten NY site and its editor, Kevin Walsh, who’s a longtime Uni Watch fan). ”¦ Did you know stop signs used to be yellow? I didn’t (but I do now, thanks to Don Montgomery). ”¦ Here’s a good view of the Joe Robbie memorial band and 25th-anniversary patch that the Dolphins wore in 1990 (with thanks to Alan Borock). ”¦ Also from Alan: Good view of NC State’s front helmet decals, circa mid-1980s. ”¦ Serious sock stripes on display here (with thanks to Thomas Turner). ”¦ “Beleaguered Habs goalie Casey Price is switching his leg pads back to white from the red he has worn since the All-Star Game,” reports Casey Barcomb. “Since donning the red pillows, he has allowed 32 goals in eight games for a 4.00 GAA. In the season prior to switching to the red pads, his GAA was 2.35.” ”¦ Very nice Brad Van Pelt photo gallery here. “Aside from being the rare linebacker who got to keep his No. 10 (as mentioned in this obit), I think he was the only Giant to have gone through all five of the ’70s-’80s uniform incarnations,” notes Fran Fried. ”¦ Some British railroad uniforms had to be returned to the manufacturer because they were too revealing. No photo, alas (with thanks to Brendan Tarpey). ”¦ Jonee Eisen has scanned a bunch of pages from a 1975 New England Whalers program. “I love the wacky illustrations, especially the weird one on the coaches’ page — what the hell is that about?” he writes. “Also, it’s great that the ‘tough guys’ are celebrated, complete with fight photos. There are also a couple photos showing Toronto Toros players, who appear to have TNOS (team name on sleeves), as well as a center stripe on the helmet.” There’s more, too — for the full slideshow, look here. ”¦ I don’t really care about this sort of stuff, but I know many of you do. ”¦ Took a while, but Justine DeCotis finally came up with a photo of Milica Paligoric, the Iona player who was wearing eye black a few weeks ago. ”¦ I’m fairly certain this is a first: A Phoenix-area high school basketball team had to borrow another school’s uniforms due to a mercury spill (special Uni Watch hazmat suit now on its way to Jason Molina). ”¦ See what happens when there are too many “Think Pink” banners in the arena? (That’s Phil‘s wisecrack, just for the record.) ”¦ The Chicago Wolves (AHL) wore their home whites with the wolf’s head on the front last night — except for goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who wore the team’s maroon-shouldered alternate with “Wolves” across the chest. “Apparently there was some kind of laundry problem when the team came back from their road trip, or at least that’s what the announcers said,” reports Jonathan Cain. “The back-up goalie wore the alternate too.” ”¦ The Australian Football League’s Melbourne Demons will wear a special Red Cross relief pitch on Saturday, complete with a phone number, to help victims of the recent brush fires (with thanks to Drew Douglas). ”¦ Remember my post a few months ago about the Phillips 66ers and their penchant for double-numbered players? Erik Morris found a non-double-number example. ”¦ If you scroll down to the “Fool’s Swag” section near the bottom of this page, you’ll find an interesting story about NFL players keeping their helmets (good find by Brinke Guthrie). ”¦ The 10th photo in this gallery shows Iowa State hoops player Craig Brackins wearing one knee-high sock and one shorter sock in last night’s game against Kansas (with thanks to Shane Baker). ”¦ Yesterday’s Ticker included an item about Paul Bielewicz and his attempts to document the uniforms worn by the 1932 Rochester Red Wings (he now thinks they looked like one of these). If you can help him with this, or with any other Red Wings-related research, contact him here.

I really like seeing those Orioles spring pix. Makes me nostalgic for when my team was relevent. Interesting that the slideshow traces the “Boog Powell uni number” history. He shows up wearing #8, #16 and finally his long time #26. You can trace his ‘size’ history as well. ;-)

Stop signs were yellow through the mid-1950s and then began changing over to red. This was when all US road signs began to follow standardized sizes, designs, and colors during the initial interstate highway construction programs.

Easy explanation for coaches’ corner drawing: Coaches are hired to be fired. Hence the firing squad.

Another patch referenced in today’s post. It reminds me that I have been meaning to ask the UW community for recommendations on where to purchase these sports patches. Besides eBay and the Teampatch Yahoo store, does anyone know a good site to purchase the vintage or current sports team patches?

Wow, Paul. I don’t know who hipped you to Sarney’s and Pollock’s, but those are both great ideas.

I noticed four different helmet styles while looking through that slideshow: “old NY” (the one that’s currently resurrected), 70’s one year wonder uglies, GIANTS with three stripes and GIANTS with one red stripe. What am I missing? Was the fifth a uni change and not a helmet change?

A mercury spill shut down a whole school? What happened, a wave of mercury pouring from an elevator, like blood in the shining? Seriously, though, my first mental picture from the ticker description was that the mercury was spilled directly ON the unis, so that they couldn’t be worn. Like, the team was dueling with old thermometers at practice, and it all went horribly wrong.

When I was in college, some idiot managed to spill a vial of mercury in the science building. I hadn’t seen so many hazmat suits in one place since I watched “Outbreak”. Mercury is some nasty stuff and the authorities really go nuts if there’s a spill.

When I was in high school circa 2000, there was a mercury spill in our chem lab and all 2500 students were evacuated to the football field. Hazmat crews were called in, and had it cleaned up within about an hour or so. They don’t screw around with heavy metal poisoning in public schools.

In this case it was a student who had the mercury at his house and brought it to school and tracked it around campus. Which explains the delay in reopening the school

“Traces of mercury were found throughout the campus in school buses, four different buildings and in the athletic pole-vaulting area, Snapp said.”

Ah, how times have changed. When I was a kid, the science teacher had a container of mercury that he used to demonstrate how coins would float on heavy metals.

At some point, I helped myself to a test tube full of the mercury and took it home, where did some floating tests of my own. I held on to that test tube for years.

It went into the attic at some point, and years later I found the test tube broken and the mercury spilled. Oops.

Odd, at my public school, officials turned a blind eye to “heavy metal poisoning” you should have seen the percentage of the student body that wore Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Megadeth T-shirts.

Based on the photos alone, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the three Pittsburgh locales. Nice.

Is there any part of old Shea which was left standing as a monument?

The article on the Bills helmet yesterday gave me the idea to do a Butler helmet for my brother. I went on to eBay and bought a helmet . Its going to need some TLC, but I have a couple buddies who are in the auto body industry to the sandblasting bondo-ing and whatnot shouldn’t be to bad. Here is the kicker. I went on to the butler website and did some goggling and Butler helmets have gone from decals on both sides with stripes down the center and bone pride stickers to stripes and pride stickers only.
This was a bit of an unexpected find, so I called my brother who just so happens to work in the athletic department at Butler to find out what was going on. I had to let him in on what I was doing and asked what was going on. He said (verbatim) that “the decals were shit and started falling off after the first game so they decided to go take them off”. I don’t know if this is going to be a permanent thing or not. I personally like the plain lids. I did get a couple numbers off of him of people to contact about getting decals and such for his present, and hopefully I can find out if they will keep the bulldog decals or not.

That shirt is a classic. I actually kept a Black Flag “slip it in” shirt as my gym shirt (mom didn’t approve of the image, so had to wear it away from home). It was also stolen, soon after I saw one of the baddest dudes on the football team walking down the halls with my Flag shirt on. 100% sure he was not a fan of the band. I let that slide…

More about the Chicago Wolves jersey issue from last night. The team took the ice for warm-ups wearing their burgundy road jerseys with white (home) and white (home) helmets. For the first period, the team wore the wolf head whites while both goalies wore the alternates. The goalies switch to the normal wolf head jersey for the remainder of the game after the first period. However, during the first, it looked a bit like soccer with the goalies wearing a different jersey.

You could try taping the problem toes, or adding moleskin to the underside of the toe, inside the shoe. Trying to do anything else to alter sneakers yourself is asking to end up with a mighty uncomfortable pair of sneakers…I’m talking DIY plastic inserts and stuff like that.

I’ll tell you what NOT to wear: steel-toed boots. I played basketball in a pair once and I ended up with blood blisters under the nails on both big toes.

    No, but I’ll answer anyway.

I was staying with my friend’s family in rural Wisconsin. It was early spring (end of March/beginning of April) and I really didn’t think there would be much need for any other type of shoes, so I didn’t pack any.

The moleskin will provide a cushion between your toe and anything landing on top of your foot. I’m assuming your running shoe has a mesh-like toe, or is made out of a similar lightweight material. You’re basically just trying to beef up the toebox here with a flexible, soft material.

You can buy it in all sorts of shapes and thicknesses, go to a CVS and they should have it near the insoles and assorted foot-related items.

But it sounds like you just have bad nails; you might have better results improving the nails…they make strengthening products that you brush on. Taking Vitamin E (1000 mg daily) also helps build up nails.

But it sounds like you just have bad nails; you might have better results improving the nails…they make strengthening products that you brush on. Taking Vitamin E (1000 mg daily) also helps build up nails.
Yep, it has a mesh toe and absolutely no cushion there, especially now that I\’ve worn them a few times… thanks for the help, I\’m definitely going to have to try these things… right after the pain dies down, natch.

    um…no

it’s entirely possible it was a blueshirt fan rubbing salt in the wounds…

i still haven’t tracked down the perfect gorton’s sweater, but when i do, i would NEVER defile it by placing the name of a player who never wore said jersey on it…that’s even worse than putting a modern day/current name on a throwback, imho, although both are cardinal sins

My Gorton’s sweater is #44 Bertuzzi. I feel far worse about the name on the back than the fisherman on the front. It’s in the waaaaaay back of my closet now, but it got worn to more than a couple Rags-Islanders tilts back in the dark days.

I was at the Caps-Canadiens game last night and noticed Carey Price, the Montreal Goalie, not wearing socks. It looked like he had on the tight black/blue body suit players wear, then skin, then his skates. no nothing…..weird.

A lot of goalies do that. In fact, it’s probably more notable to see a goalie who does wear team socks. Compression gear, thin socks and sweatpants are the most commonly worn stuff I’ve seen.

The team will wear the new caps on Monday for team photos, and then the caps will debut officially on Opening Day. Designed by MLB and the Mets last year and manufactured by New Era, the caps will be available for purchase beginning next week (week of 2/23). I’ve got three “authentic-ish” Bears jerseys (one of each) that I bought on eBay from some dude in Seoul for less than the price of a single replica.

There are some minor issues that I could easily correct with a needle and thread if they really bothered me enough to take action.

As many of you have heard Dodger catcher Russell Martin will be wearing “J. Martin” on the back of his jersey this season in honor of his mother. I may have some spring training pictures of that on the film I took, should know for sure by tomorrow.

    The Colors Book…

In 1997-98 my old Hockey site partner and I submitted a book idea with MANY sample pages to Dan Diamond (Total NHL series), the NHL, and the NFL…

    The Titles:
    NHL COLORS
    NFL COLORS

Exact same book. I’ll say it again EXACT SAME BOOK!

Maybe I should get all mad like that ST. Louis Blues rip-off guy. LOL what a crock, he combines the existing logo and the regions biggest/most famous landmark, and has the naivety to think he did something unique. Even the wordmark was stolen from the Blues!

Anyway, here I have submitted an upwards of 15 articles over the past few years here, only to see Paul or someone else ignore them and feature them a week or 2 later as original thought. My bottom line, once you open your mouth about an idea, don’t be surprised to see it somewhere else in the near future.

    I have also been looking for the original copies of Sabres Uniforms I sent to them back in 2002 I believe. It is very close to the current alt’s, but the fact that all I did was add silver and the old logo like they use now. There is NO reason for me to get upset;
    1) I didn’t trademark anything.
    2) Like that Blues guy, I used EXISTING team logo’s and marks. It’s not my work, how can I take credit?
    3) I submitted it, and they may have never seen it…silver was an obvious addition.

The UW high-horse gets higher everyday. Good thing there are guys like LI PHIL / TEEBZ / ETC that keep me from hating the smugness around here.

My Name is link. I was the ESPN Buffalo Bills correspondent from 2000-2006, (One of the only ‘writers’ with 1 million hits a season, covering the NFL’s smallest market) and I understand I’m not a wordsmith by any means. BUT, I believe in content quality over comma and apostrophe quality. You should actually read what it says Paul. I didn’t say you or anyone ignored anything, I said it usually pops up later. I may only be submitting 1 part to a long story that pops up, but my point is…I can’t take or expect credit for it. That’s it, that’s all.

I think you are taking offense because your latest ESPN column was a massive uninteresting flop. Although the Uni-smugness runs deep I am still a huge fan, so I hope you have been drinking because a response like that just adds to the no-it-all image you often project.

I thought JHT’s comment was a new topic, I was trying to help someone out. I’m laughing so hard right now that someone is actually complaining that their ‘find’ was re-posted. Are you 8 years old Hemogoblin? It’s a real site BTW, just not available to your area.
Even funnier than Hemo’s sour grapes, when someone posts a google link, then it’s reposted and the original poster gets all mad like he is responsible for the item actually existing on earth.

Nate Robinson dunked over Biff tonight on the Letterman show tonight wearing the same green uni he did for the dunk contest. He was showing off his shoes to Dave, and Dave asked if they were waterproof. Hahaha. Also, Nate said that Nike, Warner Bros., and DC Comics made the shoes for him. Now, I know his special shoes are called Kryptonates…which is a spoof on kryptonite, which is from Superman, which is owned by WB or something like that. But, why would WB, and DC help in the making of that shoe?

What’s curious to me is, usually when the National Anthem (both teams based in USA, so I assume the SSB is the tune of choice) is played, no matter American or Canadian, the teams face the respective country’s flag while the song is in progress. But in this case the Whalers and the refs are facing one direction and the Racers are facing the other. Unless the flag is directly over center ice (which I guess it could be) someone has their backs to the flag. Or maybe that was just the “WHA” way of doing things back then.

    Very. Affordable.

But how do you explain this pricing?
The jerseys are Chinese knock-offs. You can find them at convenience/variety stores all over here in Southern Ontario. In most cases they are $40-60 Canadian and the lettering/patches and cresting are far better quality than the $100-140 RBK “repli-thentic\” version. You honestly can’t go wrong with that jersey, my friend got Kane last week for $49.99 and it is beautiful. The WC patch alone looks authentic and worth $20 bucks.
No shit? Really? Here I was thinking that the merch was fake forty fucking comments ago.

    *sigh*

I do my best to read every comment before I comment here myself… others should do the same.
Fixed.
Hahahahahaha… it had absolutely nothing to do with that… it had more to do with how absolutely foolish you made yourself look when you went off and said what had been said thirty posts ago… I don’t care who said it.

“In 1924 the stop sign was changed to black on yellow by the National Conference on Street and Highway Safety (NCSHS), which was the prevailing color until 1954. They regulated the signs to be mounted two or three feet above the ground. Another group (the predecessor to the MUTCD) had similar, but not identical ideas. The 1935 MUTCD regulation defined that stop signs should be octagonal, but with red or black letters on a yellow background.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) stop sign was altered eight times between 1935 and 1971, generally regarding mounting height or reflectorization. However, the most significant change was the 1954 alteration to white on red color.”
