Monday Morning Uni Watch

bucs.jpg

I’m sure something stupider than the following statement will be uttered at some point this year. I just can’t imagine what it could be. Check this out:

[T]he decision to go back to a jersey with sleeves was again part of the effort to identify with the uniform style of the most successful Pirates teams in the organization’s history. Four of the five world championships won by the Pirates were won by players that had sleeved jerseys.

Yeah, and all of the Pirates’ championship teams wore stirrups, so I suppose you’re gonna go back to those too, right? While you’re at it, go back and see what brand of jockstrap all the players on the ’71 and ’79 World Series teams were wearing.

And people wonder why fans get cynical. I don’t have much of a problem with the Pirates ditching their vests and going back to sleeves (except for the pinstriped vest, which will still be worn for Sunday home games), but c’mon, stop coming up with asinine rationales and just say that you did it change things up a bit and increase merch sales. I’m sure most fans would rather buy a sleeved jersey instead of a vest, so you could say, “We doing it for our fans” and you wouldn’t even be lying.

Anyway, my take on the Buccos’ new uni set breaks down like this:

New home and road jerseys: Personally, I always liked the Pirates in vests and wish they’d stuck with them, but the addition of sleeves still looks fine, and now at least we won’t have the problems with some players wearing the official patch-inclusive undersleeves and others wearing unofficial patch-free sleeves. (One tangential point of concern: Very disturbing to see Nyjer Morgan wearing solid black socks instead of stirrups. Let’s hope this was just a photo-op shortcut and not a harbinger of a change in Morgan’s hosiery habits.) Good or stupid? Good enough.

New black alternate jersey and cap: Hate it. If you must have a black jersey, and if you really want to hearken back to your championship heritage, why not go with something like this? Plus I can’t stand that format where the insignia and the uni number don’t vertically align. Plus-plus the new alt cap so similar to the regular cap as to make no difference. Stupid.

Keeping the pinstriped vest for Sundays: Wait, I thought the whole point of this new set was that sleeves = championships. Whatever — vests and pinstripes are a bad mix. I have a feeling this jersey will be gone for good by 2010, and they should have just gone ahead and retired it now. Stupid.

Ditching the red vest: Addition by subtraction. Very, very good.

A team source who was present for Friday’s unveiling festivities relayed the following info to me:

Most players I spoke with liked the idea of having sleeves and said with the way each uniform can be tailored to fit, there is no loss of mobility as opposed to the free range of motion associated with the sleeveless design.

The fabric is interesting. It has a mesh texture not unlike your old-school football jerseys. It’s very stretchable and looks like it’ll breath much better than the traditional poly fabric. By the way, the fabric did not match the pants, which were traditional poly. Strange when viewed up close.

Team President Frank Connelly was very tongue-in-cheek with his introductory comments regarding the uniform change, saying (I’m paraphrasing here) “While our red vest design was extremely popular with our fans and players …” That comment got a laugh out of closer Matt Capps and others.

As you can see, there’s gonna be a lot more Cool Base fabrications this season. We’ll address the full implications of that at another time. (Additional Pirates uni info here, and there’s video of the unveiling here.)

Meanwhile, while the Pirates were unveiling their new uniforms, the Rangers were showcasing their new set (full info here, video here): One at a time:

New letters and numbers: Overlooked in all the hubbub about the new jerseys and caps (which I’ll get to in a sec), the Rangers have introduced a new custom font that’s total shite. NOBs are gonna be illegible on the home and road jerseys, and the numerals look like they’ve got warts. All the jerseys will now use this typography. Seriously stupid.

New home jersey: Do these Texans have an inferiority complex or what? OK, we get it, you’re from Lone Star country. Jeez. Seriously, a home jersey that doesn’t include the team name or logo is pretty weak. Stupid.

New road jersey: Fine from the front, but you’ve got that nasty font on the back. Good tempered with a side of stupid.

New blue alt jersey: Looks just like last year’s blue alt, right? Almost: Last year’s chest insignia had silver-gray outlining, while the new version has MLB’s favorite new design effect, beveling. Plus it’s got the same crummy typography on the back. Stupid.

New red alt jersey and cap: Jesus H. Christ, would you people please PICK A COLOR AND STICK WITH IT?! Either your primary team color is blue or else it’s red, but it can’t be both. Just start over and use chartreuse or orange or mustard or something. Stupid.

Ditching the alt home vest and alt road vest: Never liked the home version. Rather enjoyed the road version, but the Rangers just don’t feel like a vest-ish team, so they’re probably better off without both of these. Good.

Changing the shoes from blue to black: You know the only reason they did this is because the blue spikes wouldn’t work with the red alt jersey. Still, whatever motives, black spikes are always the way to go (Oakland excepted, natch). Good.

Changing the belts from blue to black: Another change that was no doubt necessitated by the introduction of the red uni set. And it’s too bad, because a blue belt would look better with all their other combos — yes, even with black spikes. Belts and shoes should always match at the office, but that rule doesn’t hold at the ballpark. Stupid.

New batting helmet: Hahahahahahahahahaha! The great thing about this is that the Mets’ sleeve patch is no longer the worst uni element introduced this winter. I’ll have an entire ESPN column on this helmet later today (look here). Beyond stupid, more like imbecilic.

Fortunately, I was having too much fun at Saturday’s Uni Watch party to get too worked up over any of this. Speaking of which…

Party Update: Saturday’s shindig at Sheep Station was really swell — best Uni Watch party ever, I’d say. Big thanks to all who showed up (especially Ed Hahn, who came all the way from DC and took some photos that you can see here). I’ll have a full report, with lots more pictures, ether tomorrow or Wednesday.

Speaking of this week’s schedule, I’ve got three ESPN columns in the hopper (one today, a really interesting surprise topic for Wednesday, and my annual Super Bowl preview column on Friday), so I may cut back a little here on the blog — not sure yet. In any event, we’ll definitely have regular content tomorrow.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I’ve previously run photos of Richard “Batman” Wood, who got his nickname because of the logo he wore on his pads. But now Chris Markham has found a shot indicating that Wood also wore a Batman helmet decal. ”¦ Also from Chris: USFL officials wore really awful Pony-branded socks. ”¦ “Southern California” is a lot of letters to fit on a basketball jersey (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ According to this story, the Sixers will be switching to their 1982-83 uni design next season. But I’ve seen next season’s Sixers jersey, and I can tell you that it’s not quite as simple as an ’82-’83 throwback. Sorry, can’t tell you more, but I just wanted to say that the story as stated on that page isn’t quite accurate. ”¦ The Bobcats wore their checkerboard uniforms on Friday, forcing the Suns to wear white on the road. ”¦ Color vs. color: Marquette vs. DePaul on Saturday. “I had it on in the background and it took me about five minutes to look up and realize that the team in blue wasn’t Marquette — and I’m from Milwaukee,” says Karl Vierthaler. ”¦ Last Monday I linked to this article about Nile Kinnick’s old football gear. But the web version of the article didn’t include this great photo of the jersey’s inner tag (big thanks to Brad Eenhuis for mailing me the newspaper version). ”¦ Similarly, yesterday’s New York Times featured this article about the 1959 all-star benefit game for Bill Dobbyn, but the web version doesn’t include this great photo that ran in the print version. ”¦ A high school goalie in New Hampshire is trying to trick shooters by having a new pattern printed on his pads (with thanks to Justine DeCotis). ”¦ According to this column, one of the first things Eric Mangini did after being hired by the Browns was “to tear down a huge mural of the team’s Hall of Famers, a list that includes Jim Brown, Otto Graham, Paul Brown, Dante Lavelli, Marion Motley, Lou Groza and Leroy Kelly. ”¦ That wall is now painted white.” What a moron. ”¦ UNC’s women’s hoops team wore pink uniforms yesterday, in memory of Kay Yow. ”¦ And officials working the Longwood/Va.Tech game wore pink whistles (with thanks to Clark Ruhland). ”¦ Yesterday’s post included this shot of the 1950 NHL all-star jersey design, which, as Dan Richardson points out, appears to have been the inspiration for the New Westminster Salmonbellies lacrosse team’s jersey design. ”¦ “Our local high school is Georgetown-Ridge Farm High School in Illinois,” writes Joel Hackler. “For our non-major sports, the high school co-ops with another local town, Chrisman. Our mascot is the Buffalo and our colors are purple and gold, while Chrisman is the Cardinals and their colors are red and black. Since we co-op for track and cross country, our coach decided to create a new uniform. As you can see, they stick out. The logo on the front includes ‘CHS’ (for Chrisman high school) and ‘GRF’ (Georgetown-Ridge Farm). It’s hard to see, but the two sets of letters are connected with a white chain symbolizing that the two schools are connected.” That’s Joel at far left in the photo, running in the 4×100 relay. ”¦ If you go to this page and scroll down about halfway down the menu on the right, you’ll find an excellent video on how a football helmet is manufactured (with thanks to David Soline). ”¦ Badly botched NOB during Saturday’s NBA D-League game between the Anaheim Arsenal and L.A. D-Fenders: Ryan Forehan-Kelly was missing an “e” and a hyphen (good catch by Daniel Peterson). ”¦ Kari Lehtonen isn’t the first Thrashers goalie to have a Batman-themed mask. Pasi Nurminen wore Batman and the Joker on his mask in 2003-04 (thanks, Teebz). ”¦ If you start at this page from a 1967 issue of Baseball Digest and start scrolling down, you’ll see some unusual (and, I think, very unofficial) MLB team logos (with thanks to Gordon Reid). ”¦ Tris Wykes sent along some interesting scans, including Doug Flutie with his mouthguard tucked into his sock, Duane and Brent Sutter in a 1986 photo they probably regret, Bobby Orr wearing No. 27, and Chris Chelios wearing lace-up gloves and rubber bumpers on his helmet. ”¦ Kyle Oen — the man behind the awesome Vintage Minnesota Hockey site — reports a hockey/baseball crossover promotion in the offing: “This coming summer we have agreed to do a St. Paul Saints baseball jersey that celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Minnesota Fighting Saints hockey team.” No images yet. ”¦ U.S. Pond Hockey Championships report from Jeff Barak, who writes: “Here’s a Men’s Senior team wearing old IHL Minnesota Moose jerseys. This team won the “Golden Shovel” a couple of years back as division champions. Next we have the Pond Scum, showing some of the unique numbering treatments you sometimes see (I recall a team last year that had fractions, decimals, roman numerals and even Ï€ on one of their jerseys). And then there’s District 5, wearing their plaid lumberjack flannels. I did see a few other teams wearing Ottawa 67’s barberpole-style jerseys, 1980 U.S. Olympic jerseys, AHL Iowa Stars, and some with the 1932 Boston Bruins striping pattern, plus more than one tweed jacket, but unfortunately no photos — the combination of 13 º weather and a -7 º wind-chill made for an unhappy five-year-old son and sucked the life out of my camera batteries.” ”¦ Reprinted from last night’s comments: In 1985, Bill Bidwill had the Cardinals wear solid-red hose (no whites), and the players protested. ”¦ Here’s something you don’t often see: the towel literally being thrown in at the conclusion of Saturday’s Mosley/Margarito bout. ”¦ Dayton wore throwbacks yesterday (with thanks to John Cristiano). ”¦ Teal vs. maroon on Saturday, as Coastal Carolina played Winthrop (with thanks to Mike Miller). ”¦ Also from Mike: “What’s wrong with this photo? That’s UW-Milwaukee wearing gold vs. Valparaiso in white. Nothing unusual, right? Except that the game is in Milwaukee (check the Brewers ads). Valpo has gold road uniforms and Milwaukee has gold home uniforms, so Valpo had to wear white on the road.” ”¦ Adam Telischak was attending the NFL Experience in Tampa sent along some shots of vintage NFL sweatshirts and this program. One thing I hadn’t noticed before: Brownie the elf has five fingers — unusual (and unacceptable!) for a cartoon character. ”¦ Lots of NHL all-star pics here. ”¦ This is pretty funny (with thanks to Ken Ocker). ”¦ Coupla Super Bowl screen grabs from Doug Keklak: First, when Jim O’Brien kicked the game-winning field goal in SB V, his chin strap was unbuckled. Anyone know if he always did this? Also, why did Jim Otto have a first initial in SB II? Was there another Otto on the Raiders? … Rafael Nadal has been wearing some brutal color combos down in Oz.

It could be the angle, but it looks like #12 in the main pic is wearing an old style cap. It appears the under bill is gray in this picture.

    Those helmets are something else.

Didn’t the Rangers wear black spikes recently? Maybe it was during the red hat era.

    Odds n’ ends.

“J.OTTO”, I imagine, was because Raiders had a LB named Gus Otto.

Rangers have been wearing black shoes for a couple years now (or more). They wore red shoes shoes during the “red era”.

Flutie’s mouthguard was in his sock on the famous fling against Miami, too. Theoretically, the play could have been called back.

Jim O’Brien also wore two different brand shoes when he kicked in that Super Bowl. Think it was one Ridell and one adidas. Becuase back then most kickers also were position players, prior to a FG attempt there often was a change of footwear to a square-toed shoe. They were straight-on kickers, remember.

Glad someone from UW made it out the pond hockey championships.

Sure wish I’d been a Sheep Station. Great DIY there, Powers.

No, they’ve been wearing blue shoes since 2004:

Kudos to the gentleman wearing the Phoenix Coyotes jersey at the UniWatch gathering! I salute an individual with such a keen sense of style and taste.

    I stand corrected.
(giggle) Shows how much attention I’ve been paying to the Rangers lately. Guess I was thinking of the A-Rod era.

Plus, I am amazed (yes, amazed) that Dressed/Nines actually is paying attention to shoe color. Now, if they’d get the old stuff right, too.

HA! that was me…my “salute” to Teebz ;)

i don’t think anyone has called me a “gentleman” in years

    thanks

Hey Paul, would you please throw us a little more info on next season’s Sixers uniforms. I had been in contact with the Sixers front office on several occasions petitioning them to lose the current logo and uniforms for a more traditional look. I am excited to see them wear the ’82-’83 throwbacks more often this season, but I an dying to know what is in store for us next year. Any tidbit of information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Duh. It’s the ROYALS who went to black shoes in the past few years.

Hey, it’s early on a Monday morning and I don’t wanna go to work. Can someone write a note to my boss? Tell him I have the 25-hour smallpox or something?

    Sorry.

Did anyone else notice that the Valpo player’s head is above the rim in that UWM-Valpo pic?

Yesterday, Johnny O was asking about Super Bowl logos being used on equipment. Can’t give a real good history, but the Skins wore two small logos on the back bumper in XXII and a fairly decent size logo in XVIII: link

Also, someone posted some Newark Bears news including “new” uniforms and Tim Raines as manager. Personally very glad to see him back in baseball. He has spent the last eight years or so battling a very debilitating disease and having the physical stamina to do such a job is really quite remarkable. Good luck to him.

There seems to be a lot of dislike to the Pirates’ pinstripe sunday vests. I’ve actually really like this uni since it came out.

Aside from that, I pretty much agree with the assessment of the new Pirates set. To me, nothing earth shattering. They added sleeves to the unis they already had for the most part.

I HATE the black alternate, but I guess it’s better than the red vest!

Did anyone catch “Two Minute Warning” last week on AMC? It’s a poor-man’s “Black Sunday”. Sniper at “Championship X”, filmed at the LA Coliseum. Complete with Howie and the Giffer on play-by-play, Dallas and Baltimore met looking suspiciously like USC and Stanford.

A uniform change is always exciting news – with one major exception – The Texas Rangers – no team seems to change their uni more consistently than the Rangers – and they’re all un-memorable. They’ve never been ugly – but nothing ever stands out. I guess they must feel the same way – at least at the unconscious level – judging by their batting helmet design – but unfortunately that achieving some distinguishment on the side of ugly.

I’m surprise that baseball unis can’t be much more easier breathing material. (I realize there’s the famous Seinfeld episode), but with this day and age, can’t someone dry clean whatever material is chosen between games.

Agreed. Nearly 40 years and zero sense of visual identity. They’re like a big, bland suburb — inoffensive but characterless.

Those unofficial MLB logos in that 1967 Baseball Digest were part of the charm of that low-budget publication.

I don’t have any screen grabs of it or anything, but I recently saw highlights of the 1983 USFL Playoff game between Chicago and Philadelphia. The referees were wearing shorts because it was 92°F on the field. Talk about stupid looking.

The Sutter brothers took an embarrassing photo, all right, but it’s no “Ooh la la Sassoon,” to be sure.

    link

For an alternate, the eccentric styling of that black Pirates jersey, with the off center number and bold white stroked gold P, is pretty slick in my book.

Pretty sure that O’Brien shot is from the SBV highlight film (since they were showing them all weekend). Watch carefully next time, when he kicks the game winner, they cut to a side-angle shot and it is actually an extra point going through, then they cut back to the actual celebration. Would love to ask Steve Sabol why they used that shot. They had other angles of the real game winner going through but didn’t use ‘em.

I know there’s probably a lot of group think with Paul’s post, but I like the Pirates new unis. Yeah, the reason for sleeves is dumb, but whatever. At this point, I’ll take any reason to believe in a successful season. Obviously everyone is glad the ketchup vest is gone. But I really like the black vest. It’s not just black for black, Pittsburgh is “black n’ gold” after all. It’s much more interesting that link, it has sleeve piping which livens it up, and most importantly… no red!

Thanks lwiedy. Any further research to find out when the the Super Bowl logo was first worn ever as a decal or anything? I just can’t believe I never realized that a lot of older SB’s were played sans SB logo. It’s so common now that things are plastered with the logo everywhere, including the uni, that I can’t imagine a time when it wasn’t everywhere.

Also, someone posted a pic. of the Super Bowl logo for next year since it was in the program for this years SB…can we get that pic. again?

is it actually a given that the rangers will wear this in game play? this is seriously the WORST thing to possibly grace a head since this…and like paul said, as a mets fan, it makes “our” ridiculous patch and laughable helmet no longer the worst accoutrements in MLB this season

    /thank you texas

That is the current plan, yes. We’ll see if the shitstorm of ridicule that’s sure to follow will be enough to shame them out of it.

Regardless of what the style book says, the Rangers have had alternate jerseys with beveled lettering since at least 2000. I know because I own one.
If they had simply used last season’s road vest as a template for their new set, they’d have wound up in much better shape than they are now. That was a sweet looking jersey.

Regarding Pittsburgh, I concur on the black alternate…but then again, I was probably the only person here who liked the red vest! And I still hate their number font with a passion…wherever it’s located.

There was a Gus Otto [no relation]who was with the Raid-duhs when the legendary Jim Otto was Daryle Lamonica’s center.

Correct…on the Eastbay website, you can purchase the Marquette gear which is listed with the SOD Nike gear.

Geez… The Rangers really make me sad sometimes. Forty years, one playoff win. What the Lions have been for football, the Rangers have been for baseball. Not to mention that they’re basically a middle level between AAA and the real MLB: you come to Arlington, play well for a couple seasons, and then you’re gonzo. And now these uniforms. Why do they do this to me? Have I wronged Tom Hicks in some way? Do they just dislike me? What could we, as fans, have done to deserve such a grave injustice?

And just saw the Sheep Station pictures. Would the man in the Princeton hoodie please stand up and take a bow? That is the coolest thing I have ever seen. Either great purchase, or well done on the DIY front.

The stripe out IU did last year I believe was way cooler.

The crazy Rangers font looks alright on the alternates when the white is the main foundation color. On the whites and grays, yeah, it’s going to suck.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Mets in vests, as long as they wore proper t-shirts (not spandex crap) and lost the damnable black shirts, caps, trim, etc – their colors are blue and orange, period.

Ouch!!! There will never be a time when that ISN’T too soon.

I’ve been a high school football referee for 25 years, and on my 25th anniversary of my first game ever, coming up in September, I’d like to dress myself and my crew in throwback ref unis. I recently rented the movie Leatherheads, and I liked the mid-twenties look of the officials. I think I can recreate the look without too much trouble, but does anyone have a resource (website?) that might show multiple pictures or samples of the garb they wore. Any info or ideas would be helpful, even as to their signaling and the flags, if any, that they used.

Meant to mention that Minnesota Swarm (National Lacrosse League) have new jerseys this year with a big mosquito, their alternate logo, now on chest instead of the “Swarm” wordmark. But that’s not why I mention them. On the back, in the same font and color as the NOB, they also now all have “WELLS FARGO” below their number and above the hem stripe (sorry, no screen grabs and couldn’t find a photo online).

Is such a thing common in NLL?

I live here in Arlington and there is already talk about it being taken out because there was just a hupe uproar at all the media outlets here. They actually mentioned the harsh reaction over it at the Fan Fest and said, “We might go back to the drawing board because this was a move was for the fans and out first goal is to make the fans happy…”

So this just shows you how in touch Tom Hicks is with his fans. Plus, their first goal should be signing pitchers and not trading away all of our farm talent so we could win sometimes.

wait a second here; are you saying there’s a professional baseball team in Pittsburgh? who knew?

I went to Piratefest yesterday and saw the new unis in the team store. Thoughts:

    1) Bye, bye, red. Good riddance. Some collector was buying up all of the red sleeveless tops in the game-worn store. WTF!

    2) The new whites and grays are OK, rather unspectacular, but the piping is a nice touch. They harken to the style of the early ’50s, which was one of the worst eras in team history. So I don’t understand management’s “back to the (winning) future” with that move. It was an insane remark on face value.

    3) I really like the black alternates. Simple, yet colorful.

    4) $36 for an official on-field lid these days? I’ll stick with the $20 slouch cap!

Question for the authentic jersey buyers: What’s your preference, the regular knits or the cool-base models? For sitting at a ballgame on a hot summer day, the ventilated one might be better. What holds up better, wash after wash?

At one time the White Sox held the record for most uniform changes, but they’ve settled down since moving to new Comiskey.

i really wonder if i should give up and be an indians fan.

Say it ain’t so Tony! (Although, being in Erie, you kind of could get away with it).

Just be like me and refuse to put one cent towards that team, whether it be tickets, merch, whatever, until they make a serious commitment to SOMETHING resembling winning baseball.

As for PirateFest, I’m curious of the big crowds. I tend to think there is a loyal, albeit dwindling, base that supports the team through thick and thin, but after reading the story in the PG over the weekend about the fans grilling management in the Q&A, well, I wonder if people in the burgh used the off week before the Super Bowl to vent.

$36?!?! That’s what New Era on-field caps are going for these days?!?! Is that just the regular model (i.e. no special patches that add $10)? My God, the ASG and WS caps are going to be $50 before we know it.

My wife and I were at Dick’s yesterday. She purchased a Polamalu women’s jersey and we were discussing prices changes. I recalled when I worked in retail that Steelers’ replicas were $49.99 and now they are $74.99. I also added my opinion that the quality of the replica is much better than it was before. At the beginning of the jersey craze, you had companies like Wilson, Champion, Starter, Apex One, etc putting out some pretty crappy merch. I know it’s probably blasphemy to say this in here but I really saw the quality increase when Nike got into the game and it continued with Reebok. I don’t mind the $75-80 price range with the improved quality of the product. Had the quality stayed the same, I’d be griping. (FYI, those novelty Super Bowl jerseys are freaking horrible looking, yet you wouldn’t believe how many people had them in their hands)

To my longwinded point on the caps, aside from the 3-D laser stitching and the MLB logo on the back, what the hell has changed with the on field hat? It’s a wool baseball cap!

Side question to the person that attended PirateFest, just curious, what was the clearance price on the red vests?

I agree with Jeff @21, those Baseball Digest illustrations are superb. Artistic liberties in pulp.

The five fingered elf?: sad, really.

I too am a fan of Phil’s Coyotes sweater; not the striping, necessarily, but that great, original logo.

make me want to vomit. I’m still crying.

…in other news, the Pirates next step to “championship baseball”, signing Barry Bonds to a one year deal, provided, of course, that he accepts to live with the Million Dollar Arm twins.

Ridiculous? Of course. So is saying “lets brainwash the fans into thinking we’re really serious about fielding competitive baseball by putting sleeves on our jerseys.”

No, Indians at least made 2 WS in the last 15 years…and Pirates fans know Sid Bream will always have a special place in destroying that franchise

    Two things:

The Pirates new ones can, in some ways, be forgiven. They have the ugliest non-expansion team colors in MLB. Add with that goofy “throwback” or “traditional” font they insist on still using(yawn) and how much better could they do? Sometimes you started with a good uni and sometimes you’re the Pirates. It’s just an old franchise that seems to keep playing a bad uni hand. Over and over and over, etc.

Seriously, I have an MA in Aesthetic Philosophy(yes, they exist) and BLACK AND YELLOW!!?? It’s a crime. This aggression should not stand.

    And two:

We wore Roo’s when I ran cross country and track in high school. I distinctly remember that our CC coach got them for the varsity team because he could both order a choice of two-tone color schemes(we were navy blue and white) AND they had pocket in the tongue with a velcro closure. He liked that we could all keep a key or two in there, leave stuff in our lockers, and didn’t have to drag too much gear around.

    Abidingly.
Kek, for what it’s worth, the on field caps aren’t wool anymore.
well shit, shows you what I know!!! But really, whatever it’s made out of can’t be worth $36! When they were selling for $24.99 ten years ago the markup was insane, can’t imagine what it is now.

I still say switching to that blue and white is a way better move for the Pens. Back to red white and blue for the Bucs, and give the Steelers back their block lettering.

Then again, why take away a fan’s right to only own one black and yellow shirt so he can wear it to all three teams games!

Have to admit–also grew up in Erie and therefore must swear allegiance to either Pittsburgh, Buffalo or Cleveland. Unfortunately, I cam from a long line of Clevelanders.

Fixed that problem by moving to Philly 15 years ago. HA!

I have always liked the Pitt. use of black, what with the whole, coal/steel thing they got going on. I just think they could use an update on the fonts, etc. They all kind of look the same at this point.

It’s kind of ironic for a team stuck in uniform banality for 40 yrs, to inadvertently design this butt ugly helmet – that mistakenly symbolizes such a horrific event. If this view could become more wide spread, it would be doing a service , as it would probably be the final nail in the coffin, to ensure it never sees the light of day – and the Rangers can get back to their uniform comfort zone of being the equivalent of a retired accountants convention.

By design. The Penguins were originally blue and white.

The Penguins applied with the NHL to change their colours to match the other pro sports teams in Pittsburgh, and the Boston Bruins threw a hissy-fit as they claimed the Penguins were infringing on their “recognizable and distinguishing” colour scheme.

It went to court, the Bruins lost because colours cannot be copyrighted, and the city of Pittsburgh had three matching pro teams.

Aren’t New York City’s official colors royal and orange, or at least blue and orange? Hence the Knicks and Mets color choices?

I know for a fact that’s why New York Raiders of the WHA wore royal and orange. I was in the room when they made the decision.

I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere long ago that the Jets might have gone to blue and orange when they morphed from the Titans, but because Broncos already had gone to those colors—and because they wanted to kinda hint at the Colts cuz they’d hired Weeb Ewbank—they opted for Kelly and White.

Actually, Teebz, wasn’t the reason the Pens’ won that case against the Bruins because they proved they actually had black/yellow FIRST as the Pittsburgh Pirates (hockey verison)? So yes, they made the switch at the height of the “city of champs” days, but the city had a black and yellow history long before then.

The Pens’ mid-season switch was pretty unique and in the context of things, just as laughable as the pirates going to back to sleeves to harken “championship baseball”. The Pens were the laughingstock of the city at the time, in fact this futility led them to be able to draft #66 in the first place.

Question: Has any QB gone longer between Super Bowl starts than Kurt Warner, who’ll be making his first SB start in seven years?

Also, at various points in time, the baseball, football and hockey teams in Pittsburgh were know as the Pirates.

Let’s see to it that this thing joins the 49ers “1 day helmet”. This is horrible. As bad as the Mets and Rockies helmets are, most casual fans don’t even know that they are two-tone. The colors are closer, and it just isn’t that obvious on TV… but this… oh my. Everyone watching will notice.

Also, if the Rangers have one bright spot of design over the years, its the secondary badge logo they had during their red days. It was nice. Too bad they replaced it with the vanilla design that they have today.

I’ll agree with you on the alt cap, pretty weak effort. Way too subtle, especially with what New Era is charging for hats these days! (Or more accurately, what retail outlets are marking up the product at).

BUT… I did find the story that matches your story, Kek.

Funny you bring up Bob Glessner because I’ve been trying to get in touch with him/verify he’s still alive because I’d like to interview him for UW. Aside from the Pens’ logo, he also designed the Pitt script and the smiling Buccaneer logo the Pirates used in the late 79s and early 80s. The owner of that site has been trying to get me in touch with Bob, but so far, no luck.

Yeah, the Pens tanking that season is sort of a shameful part of the team’s history but you can’t argue with the result!

My laughingstock comment was more geared towards the seasons in the early 80s that led up to that canned season. Man those were some poor teams! They used to come to Johnstown for exhibition games at the War Memorial and barely got 1,500 people to show (looked liked the opening scene in Slap Shot). Radio stations and bars had trouble giving tickets away.

I’ve never actually done the research on this, but there was a time when the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League were actually a better draw at the Civic Arena then the Pens, and because of this there was talk of the Pens folding/being sold whatever, and keeping the Spirit. I’m thinking it was when the DeBartolos owned the Pens and maybe had part ownership of the arena itself, not 100% sure.

I need to see the Rangers helmets in action. I’m a bit biased, but I think the 2 toned Rockies helmets are the best in the game.
Today’s ESPN column is up:
    link

The Rangers’ red helmets with blue jerseys looked pretty good — nice contrast, like a football uniform (see Maryland when it wears black jerseys) — but the combined helmet is horrid, agreed.

Interesting how we find baseball uniforms of all one color (see 3 examples cited by Paul — O’s, Phils, A’s) — bad, but not so in basketball and not so much in football. I agree those uniforms looked bad (and you can add the A’s all-gold to that ensemble, along with the Pirates’ all-gold and all-black), but few things top the Rangers’ new helmet. Why not just wear a matching helmet with the caps?

Sorry, I mean see OLD Maryland when it wore black jerseys with red helmets, not the new Maryland with white helmets and black jerseys. For a current example of contrast, see Clemson with orange helmets and purple jerseys, or Texas Tech with black helmets and red jerseys.

The Pirates didn’t switch their uniforms because of the whole Championship notion. They were switched because the players didn’t like having to wear a certain undershirt underneith the jerseys and tcould therefore have the jerseys tailored to still fit to their likening.

Granted, they did mention it… but do your research before you post things. I’ve constantly seen things on here that you don’t notice until days, if not weeks later.

As I said, I remembered hearing or reading it somewhere, but the color matching to Hess’ gas stations makes a lot more sense. And, truthfully, I’d bet the combining of “blue and yellow to get green” was more a convenient rationalization for press release purposes than actual inspiration. They probably just didn’t want to say, “Mr. Hess wants them to look like his gas stations.”

And the unis, yeah, they quite obviously were then designed for a “Colts style” presentation because of Weeb being there.

That’s all entirely likely. Thanks for the the story.

The exact opposite is true with what Reebok has done with hockey jerseys. Cheaper feeling fabrics and patches (but they’re high tech!) and a heftier price tag. It’s a joke.

Devil’s Advocate here. The Orioles & I think the Brewers & other MLB teams used to wear multi-toned batting helmets. Were they better than these Rangers lids? Is it the “vibrating” colors that make the difference?

Paul, I think it’s Elway as Tony in Erie pointed out, then Craig Morton (’70 Cowboys, ’77 Broncos). So Warner will tie Morton on Sunday.

“Actually, Teebz, wasn’t the reason the Pens’ won that case against the Bruins because they proved they actually had black/yellow FIRST as the Pittsburgh Pirates (hockey verison)? So yes, they made the switch at the height of the “city of champs” days, but the city had a black and yellow history long before then.”

Also to chime in with KEK on the Penguins/Bruins black and gold rhubarb. This is from pittsburghhockey.net

“On November 7, 1925, the Pirates became the seventh team to join the NHL – playing in the NHL’s American Division with the Boston Bruins and the New York Americans – and played their games of the 1925-26 season at the Duquesne Gardens in the city’s Oakland neighborhood.

The Pirates wore bright yellow wool jerseys with black trim stripes with a “P” on the front of their jerseys (LEFT). Callahan’s brother was a policeman in the city and offered used emblems from police jackets to place on the uniform sleeves.”

Also if you check out the colors of the Bruins during that era, they were BROWN and gold. They didn’t go black and gold until around 1935.

Oh, wow, I wasn’t contradicting the Dodgers-Giants story regarding the selection of the Mets colors. Not at all. I know that one’s true. I remember it at the time. It just worked out that they’re also the city’s colors (which I learned only recently).

I was saying that NY came close to that kind of thing there for a while (in answer to whether any teams have a “city theme”)…because the WHA Raiders went to royal and orange specifically to follow the Knicks and Mets lead. As I said, I have personal first-hand knowledge of that being true.

Gross, inaccurate generalization. Many people who grew up before the Jets and Islanders existed (or whose parents did) but who are old NL fans — Dodgers and Giants — are Mets/Giants/Rangers fans. And there are plenty of Yankees fans who follow the Jets.

Yanks-Jets-Knicks-Islanders for me…I live in Jersey so that’s a violation of your “no Isles fans west of Queens” rule. My uncle took me to Islanders games all the time as a kid. He even brought me to the Cup Finals in ’82 and ’83 even though I was 2 and 3 years old, respectively…my dad is a Yankees fan but not really a fan of other sports, so he took me to the Bronx and there you go. I got into the Jets in kind of an odd way, I was a Bengals fan as a little kid (liked the unis) and followed Boomer Esiason, the local guy, to the Jets where I stayed. And last, I became a Knicks fan simply from listening to the games on WFAN…this was back around the 1988 season. (Brian Quinnett FTW)

perhaps someone already said something regarding the flutie mouth guard, but there was an ask the editor in SI some years ago about that, someone wondering what it was, and it turns out it was a spare mouth guard. wow i just realized this. That picture from the “NFL Experience” with the two sweatshirts technically aren’t NFL teams at all! They are from the time when the Browns were part of the All-American Football Conference. The Chicago Rockets were also an AAFC team till the 1949 “merger” between the AAFC and the NFL. Strange that the NFL does not recognize AAFC records and stats yet they are pushing an AAFC matchup as part of the “NFL” experience. Just thought it was interesting
