Uni Watch DIY Project: Getting Ready for Pitchers and Catchers

Picture 1.png

New ESPN column today. But since I took Tuesday off, we’ll continue here as usual today.

So: Got a great note the other day from Rob Waynick (that’s him at right), who’s our latest DIYer. As you’ll see, his project was a full-on family affair:

My mother, who is a professional seamstress, used to sew the letters and numbers for authentic Red Wings jerseys that were sold by a local retailer here in Detroit. There were always tons of jerseys in my house when I was growing up, and it was HELL not to be able to wear and of them.

My father loved the Tigers, especially the 1968 team. His favorite tiger growing up was Mickey Stanley, who wore the number 24. He received this jersey from a friend of his — I remember him wearing it so much when I was younger that 24 became my favorite number. But after many years, the numbers and letters on the back eventually wore off, so my mom thought it be a good idea to re-do it. I cut out all the letters and numbers onto this iron-on paper [here’s a another view] and then ironed that onto the fabric, where they were then stitched on by my lovely and talented mother.

While working on that project, I thought it would be fun to create a T-shirt styled like Mickey Stanley’s 1968 road jersey. I used the same technique as for my father’s jersey, only this time I started from scratch. I purchased the T-shirts for $4 apiece at Target. The letters and numbers were cut from scrap material that my mother had (a seamstress makes for a great source — she has bins of fabric stacked to the ceiling). I also made one for my brother, who picked Al Kaline’s number. A simple design, but classic nonetheless.

Sadly, my father passed away six years ago. These jerseys were in honor of his memory.

Nice. You can see some additional pics from Rob’s project here.

Raffle Results: The winner of the Historic Football Posters raffle is Gabe Kleinfeld. Congrats to him, and better luck next time to everyone else. More raffles coming soon.

I’m an idiot for not having mentioned this ages ago: Uni Watch art director Scott M.X. Turner hosts a weekly Pub Quiz every Thursday night at 8pm at Rocky Sullivan’s in Red Hook. The weekly trivia series (which has its own Facebook group) features lots of prizes and even more plentiful good cheer — NYC-area readers should check it out.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of DIY stuff, Sarah Schlosser-Moon and her husband, Josh, have a great blog where they showcase their hand-sewn creations, including this 1957 Reds vest jersey that Josh recently made (plus Sarah says Josh is planning a video how-to tutorial!). Full details here. ”¦ As expected. ”¦ We often talk about baseball players wearing windbreakers under their jerseys, but what about a football player? Don Sherman says that photo is from a Giants/Saints game in 1984. ”¦ Don also provided new insights into why the Broncos lost Super Bowl XII: According to the next-to-last graf of this article, three Denver players wore the franchise’s old vertically striped socks for pregame warm-ups. Sounds apocryphal to me — anyone ever hear that story before? ”¦ Mike Durkin was wondering if this was a new Twins “M” logo, but I think it’s actually Joe Mauer’s personal logo, incorporating his uni number, 7. ”¦ My Page 2 colleauge Mary Buckheit had an article yesterday about beach volleyball becoming an NCAA-sanctioned sport, and the potential controversy that could ensue regarding bikinis. ”¦ This photo shows MLB umpires Bill Miller, Chris Tiller, Jim Joyce, and Tim Tschida in the Oakland umps’ lockerroom before a game. You think Tschida also wears NBA and NFL officiating gear? (Nice find by Roger Faso.) ”¦ This will be the Reds’ final spring training camp in Sarasota — which means, of course, a new logo. Not sure yet if they’ll be wearing that as a spring training patch, but I’m checking. ”¦ Awesome old NFL program available here (with thanks to the “other” Mike Hersh). ”¦ Better photos of those inauguration sneakers here (with thanks to Joshua Exline). ”¦ Check out this awesome Air Force helmet (nice find by Nick Wollen). ”¦ “On Sunday I caught a few races at Gulfstream Park in Florida and a jockey and horse wearing Red Sox silks and blinkers,” writes Scott Szymendera. “The horse is named Varitek (makes sense), the ownership group is ‘Red Sox Nation’ (also makes sense), and the jockey is Pedro Monterrey, Jr. (Pedro…well, doesn’t really makes sense). He went off at 85 to 1 and finished ninth.” ”¦ Here’s the latest on that old lady who found an valuable baseball card in her attic. ”¦ Kind of a big hat, no? Note that Larkin’s also wearing one of those Larkin “Say No to Drugs” wristbands (with thanks to David Soline). ”¦ Also from David: The NHL is testing a new net design. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Video of the Green Bay Packers basketball team here. ”¦ The Maple Leafs wore Ace Bailey patches for last night’s game (which also found Mikhail Grabovski showing a little skin). ”¦ Check out the “H” logo at the top of the Hammonton High School athletics page. Remind you of a certain XFL team? (Good spot by Jeff Landset.) ”¦ Interesting info about yellow cycling uniforms in the Tour de France here (thanks, Phil).

There’s a photo of the new NHL net next to the article. Look to the right of the title.

I wonder if Scott Boras is on the horn with the ownership group to get Varitek the horse a 8 figure contract saying that the horse is still an élite racer.

So…any Twin Cities UWers crazy enough to either be playing in, or going to watch a bit of, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships this weekend?

I’m thinking about it, but would nice to run into another uni geek or two rather than stand around by myself (provided I can find all my wind gear, of course; gonna be a cold one).

That’s even weirder, because the other h.s. is in New Jersey, so at least they had a regional connection to the NJ/NY Hitmen.

In reference to the hat/shirt Joe Mauer is wearing… Yes, it it his own logo.

He and his family run a series of hitting clinics in St. Paul to promote their link hitting device. The “7M” logog is actually incorporated into link.

Mother that is a seamstress…love for jerseys…love making them yourself…this story sounds very familiar! ;)

Rob – you need a heat press in your house with all of those resources you have available to you…trust me!

the thing about hillcrest high in sc, the helmet that the h replaced was a ram’s horn logo al a st lou and colorado state…big downgrade if you ask me

Don’t know if this was posted yesterday, but here is the hat that Spike Lee wore to the festivities in Washington. His wife was ashamed of it and said that she did not want him to wear it. The commentators basically made fun of it.
I think he said it was one of his designs, if it was, why would he admit it?

While I acknowledge that the XFL never had the broad appeal of the NFL it’s really not that different than any high school adopting a professional or college team’s logo if it’s something they like…local/regional to the team using the logo or not…

Bethany, OK Bronchos (My apologies for the purple and white): link No known connection to Baltimore or Indianapolis.

Jones, OK Longhorns: link How in the world they, in the land of the Oklahoma Sooners, decided upon using the Texas Longhorns name and logo is completely beyond me.

And, as we all know, there are countless other examples as previously discussed in this forum.

Nice to see the Leafs honouring Bailey during the week of the All-Star Game.

His story needs to be learned by all hockey fans.

shouldnt that be “she HAS bins of fabric”?

Random comment. I am a USA Swimming official, as my daughter is a swimmer. I received a notification that USA Swimming has banned full body suits for 12 and under swimmers in an attempt to stem a small (but growing) tide of young athletes purchasing high end suits. So now Speedo LZR and Fastskin suits are banned from the tweener market. Good news, as it is ridiculous for virtually every swimmer of that age to worry about shaving time via a swim suit. Here’s a snippet of the rule.

A Swimsuits worn for all 12 & under age group defined competition shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor past the knee.

B Swimsuits worn for competition must be non-transparent and conform to the current concept of the appropriate.

C The Referee shall have the authority to bar offenders from the competition until they comply with the rule.

I’m an idiot for not having mentioning this every day, but another excellent entry. Those Tiger grays were terrific.

everytime i hear aboot bailey now, im reminded of this, which i listened to live and was laughing so hard while driving i nearly rear ended the guy in front of me:

On radio station WFAN in New York, host Chris (Mad Dog) Russo mentioned to Bettman that he had tuned into NHL Network and had been “riveted” by the Ace Bailey-Eddie Shore story.

In 1933, Shore, the Boston Bruins’ defenceman, hit Bailey from behind, smashing his head to the ice.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward almost died and never played again.

Bettman picked up the story from there.

“And, the tragic end to that story is, he, Ace Bailey, was on one of the planes on 9/11.”

“Are you kidding me?” Russo asked.

    “No,” Bettman said.

    “How old was he? Eighty?”

“I don’t think he was quite that old,” Bettman said.

Actually, Bailey would have been 98 on September, 2001, except that he had died nine years earlier.

see the problem is, bettman is an idiot and russo is almost as big of an idiot…Irvine Wallace “Ace” Bailey was the toronto star whose career was ended by eddie shore…Garnet (Ace) Bailey was on one of the planes that hit the twin towers…garnet was a former nhl player and a LA kings scout…he was 53 and not related to the first ace…

and yes, the (first) real ace‘s story is a must-know

    old time hockey

The horse ran as well as Tek played last season. I’m sure that the horse has a “great mind” for racing and “calls a great game” for the other horses to run.

Anyone get a Super Bowl program yet?

Someone with a hockey blog had it covered on Tuesday. ;o)

Those old wristbands that Larkin is wearing bring back some good memories! They were made by M&M Bandits out of California, which to my knowledge was a mom and pop outfit. My brother and I were in love with them the day that Strawberry started wearing them. Luckily on a trip across country in 1986, we visited Busch Stadium and to our absolute surprise (and delight) they had Jack Clark and Ozzie Smith wristbands for sale!! So we purchased them with our hard earned money naturally. When we returned home, we schemed and figured that the nice people at the St. Louis Cardinals team store would know who manufactured them, since they purchased them. My brother called and presto, we had the phone number of M & M Bandits! We gave them a call, they mailed us a catalog (phote copied paper, 1 page) with all of the available bands. It was pure heaven! We bought quite a few and I still have them if you’d like me to photograph them and scan them Paul. I wonder if anyone else out there has any of these?

Don’t know if this has been mentioned before (I am sure it has) but are there any photos of this…

“a radical change was proposed in 1974. Marty Appel, in his book Now Pitching for the Yankees, describes the proposed uniforms:[24]

“ In 1974 I walked into (then-General Manager) Gabe Paul’s office to find samples of new Yankee road uniforms draped across his sofa. They were the opposite of the home pinstripes – they were navy blue with white pinstripes. The NY logo was in white. Gabe liked them. I nearly fainted. Although the drab gray road uniforms were not exciting, with the plain NEW YORK across the chest, they were just as much the Yankees’ look as were the home uniforms. I think my dramatic disdain helped saved (sic) the day and saved the Yankees from wearing those awful pajamas on the field. “”

Random question(s) here, but I figured this would be the place to ask: does anyone know when the fan replica jersey first started to replace business/casual wear as the predominant “dress code” for professional sporting events? Which sport started this trend? Thanks in advance, I’m a long-time reader of the site and a member of the silent majority of the hockey wing :) In fact, it was at Monday’s Hawks-Wild game (where I was wearing my Wild jersey and my boyfriend was wearing his Patrick Kane Winter Classic replica) that the thought came to me and I’ve been trying to google an answer since with no luck.

New NHL ref jerseys = not so bad. Don’t know that we need to change them, but at least it was nothing too dramatic. The underarm orange stripe will be visible on delayed penalty, which actualy may prove to be a nice touch. Of course, we won’t find out this weekend, as I’m not expecting much in the way of penalties at the All Star Game…

Actually, that helmet was around before the Chargers ever existed. Air Force Academy football was almost brand-new, and for their first uniforms they virtually replicated the then-NFL champion Colts, but borrowed the helmet lightning bolt of the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers (theirs was a white–or gold, depending on you talk to–bolt on a blue helmet).

Chargers took their inspiration from Air Force and the Blue Bombers, altering the helmet bolt to sit higher on the helmet, of course, and going them two-better by incorporating the bolt into the shoulder loops and using it instead of a stripe on the their pants.

Since the Patsies are 50….doesn’t that mean the JETS should be 50 as well…we do honor the Titans years…and hopefully better than the stupid NYXL for the “40 years” in 2003…which only 40 years of the Jets and not the franchise…(or any other AFL team from 1960…)

I am a first-time poster (although I do read the comments throughout the day- kind of creepy like a stalker- )I am not one to really contribute as much as just sit back and enjoy, but I was drinking a Dr. Pepper with lunch today and I saw a logo on the bottle advertising this site link and I thought the logo was interesting. My take on the new shape nets:
Really wish the NHL would leave the nets alone. There are plenty of ways to increase scoring without touching the nets. I have a question for the DIYers.
I am looking to do something similar to what Rob did (very nice, btw). I am looking to create Jayson Werth ‘jersey t-shirts’ covering all his career thus far. I might have just bought them, but you can’t customize a previous player on a teams t-shirt over at shop.mlb.com. Not to mention the Majestic logo on the chest. I have bought the logo t-shirts thru another source.

I now have to get the NOB and number on there myself. How would you suggest I best go about this? Thanks for the help!

Hillsborough High School in the Tampa area also used the Hitmen H, IIRC.

But now use just a block H:

On the MLB Shop, they are selling jerseys that match this description, but with NOB link. Also, non-uni but still interesting: link

They’re nowhere close to being international-sized. The standard NHL arena, including GM Place in Vancouver, is 200×85. This has been well-documented in that the international game will have to adapt to a smaller rink.

The standard Olympic rink size is 200×98.

Do you really think that sight lines would be affected by widening the rink by 13 feet, or 6.5 feet on either side? If you do, you either play in a terribly-designed new arena, or an obsolete old arena. The sight lines argument is BS. No more and no less.

And since most new arenas are built with retractable lower bowl seating for concerts and such, that argument doesn’t work either.

    Download his team.

    1. Open MS Word
    2. File…Page Setup…Landscape
    3. Open WordArt
    4. Choose the banner Style that you want
    5. Format the layout…Tight…so that you can move it around
    6. Using the vertical and orizontal rulers on the top and side of the screen, size your nameplate
    7. You can use AutoShapes to draw lines making sure that your ssizes are correct

***You can also Right-Click…Format WordArt and click on the Sizes tab…size accordingly

    8. Within the Format WordArt Dialogue Box, you can also create a fill color for the nameplate.
    9. you can also make it double-layered by choosing a color for the line…make it larger or smaller by determiming the line weight.
    10. make sure that your screen is at 100% to see a true scale.
    11. print onto oaktag.
    12. using a matte knife and a straightedge make your template.

    13. Then follow the directions from the entry regarding iron-on paper(use Under-Wonder)any craft store should have it.

    14. When done…to be TOTALLY done…you should stitch the letters in a zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying…have someone else do it if you’re a a rookie!

Question: As only the most occasionally casual of hockey fans (i.e. I watch the 3rd period of a game if the ticker on SportsCenter tells me someone is about to win the Stanley Cup over on the other channel) I am not familiar with some of the vernacular used in the game…though I have learned a bit by paying attention to discussions here. Is it common to refer to the entire goal assembly as the net? The TSN article about the change shows pictures of the goalposts and makes a few references to the goalposts as to what’s being changed. It also makes references as to the net being changed, though, too. The pic would not come up for me at first and, as a soccer player, I was just sure they were making a change to the netting, itself, until I really reread the article and found a way to bring up the pic. In soccer it is common to talk about putting the ball in the back of the net…but the structure, itself, is called the goalpost(s) and, altogether (piping and netting), it is called the goal. Never is the metal structure referred to as the net or netting. Thanks for you help and understanding.

Is soccer the only (somewhat-sort-of) major sport where the color of the officials’ jerseys changes from game to game to ensure contrast with regard to what the two competing teams are wearing? For instance: in football, even if one team is wearing black and the other team is wearing white, you will always (exceptions for oddball leagues and other countries duly noted) find the refs wearing black and white stripes. NBA officials always wear grey. Umps always wear blue. Hockey officials always wear black and white stripes. But soccer referees and linesmen wear blue, black, fuschia, yellow, or red, most commonly, but other colors have been worn, too.

GM place is the only one built to have room to expand. And In a lot of arenas, yeah, the extra width would screw with the sight lines. They’re built so that the top rows will be able to just see the edge of the ice. And movable sections are fine, until you realize that it’s only to move things around. You widen it, the front row seats will be a good bit above the ice, which makes the sight lines awful for anyone else in the lower bowl around the edges. To change that you would have to rebuild the lower bowl, which is pretty structurally important I would imagine, rebuild all of the multi million dollar dressing rooms when you do that because you would have to tear out the lower bowl and anything under that to rebuild the lower bowl…

The seating is in it’s most compact position during hockey games. When they do concerts and basketball games, they put a boards over the ice and place temporary bleachers that extend further on in. The temporary bleachers can get longer, but the buildings are built so they don’t get any shorter since the rink size is the largest size of any event they have, unless the building was built with international ice in mind.

The only way to preserve sight lines while expanding the rink would be to elevate the rink floor- which would require rebuilding the dressing rooms and paths to the ice, not to mention the refrigeration system, which isn’t cheap, but that would have to be done anyway, since those are again built to 200×85.

And rebuilding practice rinks would come into it too, that’s not gonna be pretty.

Overall, you would be talking about 10-20 million for most teams to do that, and if they don’t, they loose business because they no longer have a state of the art premium arena, it’s now a quirky arena with bad sightlines.

I have never seen an argument strong enough to convince me that it’s worth the investment. Perhaps a rule going forward that you can choose to use international size if you want in your home arena like the NCAA does, but forcing teams to switch will never happen, and for good reason.

On the other end of that… could you imagine if he’d had even more room to wheel and deal? If he’d played on an international ice surface, he might’ve been even better, saved his knees and played a little longer.

I’d also like to see unique rink sizes come back. I like that the new Devils rink plays differently in the corners than other arenas. I like the idea of home-ice advantage and the character that the old Gardens (Boston and New York) and Chicago Stadium had.

One thing’s for sure — don’t mess with the nets. Play with goalie equipment, fine, but don’t screw with the game itself.

Two good questions. I’ll take a wild guess and say (a) it happened around the mid-’80s, and (b) it may have started with hockey (I’m visualizing Ferris Bueller’s pal right now). It was possible to get knock-off NFL replicas even back in the early ’70s if you knew where to look, but I think the turning point was when the league started making official ones. Someone needs to look at some old youtube clips to figure out the real answer to (a).

Also, in regards to the old-school Tigers DIY t-shirt, that looks excellent. I’d actually been toying with the idea of making a long-sleeve Jim Rice shirt, with “BOSTON” arched in the front in the stylized font, with 14 on the back. Sort of a combination of a football/baseball jersey, something unique. But that Detroit T just confirms that it would probably look good.

Ok, I’ll narrow this “argument” down in two questions.

    (1) Name me any NHL arena where you can’t see the four closest rows to the rink from the top row in the arena. If your answer is zero, you’re absolutely right.

    (2) Name me the number of “practice rinks” where any NHL team is concerned with losing money.

I have never seen an argument strong enough to convince me that this isn’t an owner’s argument in losing “premium seating”. Since the majority of the premium seating is empty in television anyway, why not promote a better product in place if “premium seating”?

Lastly, for the next person who writes the word “loose” when they mean “lose”, I’ll personally deem that writer as an professional hack.

I’m not sure when this lack of knowledge about the English language started, but it better stop right here and right now.

    Nothing irritates me more.

Watch it. I can’t call you a hack with the recent spell of solid weekend entries in this very site, but using a word that isn’t even a homonym of the word “lose” could put you in DOUCHEY-gross status. ;o)

    Just kidding, Philly! LOL

Regarding the Broncos wearing the old-school vertical socks in the Super Bowl pregame: I remember reading, or announcer saying, that the Broncos would do this, to honor the dark days of the franchise. The report did not detail that the socks would be worn in the PREGAME, so I was on the lookout the entire game. Back in those pre-UniWatch days, I had never seen these socks before.

Boreanaz is a huge Philadelphia fan. You can find him at Flyers and Phillies games throughout the seasons and playoffs. The cast he wore in tonight’s episode had both Flyers and Phillies logos on it. Also loved the “Flyers hockey, got a problem with it?” line as he was muscling his opponent all over the ice tonight… haha

Not that this is a unique thing for Philly teams to be in tv shows. In The Office, Jim Halpert has made it known he’s a Phillies fan, and Dwight had a Mike Lieberthal Phillies bobblehead on his desk for a couple years, and on House MD, they made it known this past week that Dr. Gregory House is a Flyers fan.

Last Friday, someone posted a link to ALL of the major sports leagues and the team’s fonts.

    15. hope this helps!
It was I who posted the fonts link, I was looking for the advice on how to execute the plan. Thanks for the advice!

Joe Lewis has seats where you can’t even see parts of the ice now. So does Mellon. MSG will be very close to the limit after they remodel this summer, they’re extending out the balconies (among other things).

But really, there is no way to tell how many arenas it would affect without visiting all of them. But the lower bowls are the bigger concern really. In most arenas they hold the majority of the people. And those people pony up more money then anybody else in the arena.

    link

The people paying the top money in the arena won’t be able to see players at the boards. That’s a problem. They’re not going to pay that top money, and the revenues of those teams will drop, and those of the league will drop. Unless you drop a couple million to rebuild the lower bowl, which teams won’t be happy about.

And all for what? Something that a lot of hockey fans swear they’ll stop watching the NHL if it ever happens? Something that would change the game, perhaps for the better, perhaps not? Something that would cause Don Cherry’s head to explode? (Okay, I might be in favor of that one).

It will not happen and never will.

Considering that Joe Louis Arena is outdated, and the Mellon Arena is being demolished, those two arenas are of no debate. MSG is another, but we’re not talking about an overnight solution here, are we?

Why would the angle change for people in the front row? The ice can be built up. They do that now in several arenas.

    This holds no water.

Well, they are international sized now, since the IIHF has decided to go to the 200x 85 for all future tournaments. And it’s more then 4 rows of seating. It’s rebuilding the entire structure of most arenas, with sightlines, seating angles, so on and so forth. You would have to rebuilt a lot of arenas, and completely scrap others. That’s not ever going to happen. In fact, there is only one arena that would not be significantly affected, GM place, because they built it anticipating Olympics.

Perhaps a rule going forward that you can choose to use international size if you want in your home arena like the NCAA does, but forcing teams to switch will never happen, and for good reason.
you do realize this would actually improve the sightlines form high up on the sides. The ice would be 7.5 feet closer would would make a steeper angle over the near boards making them actually see more.
