[Editor’s Note: Nick Tavares — shown at right with his wife, Rachel — is the latest Uni Watch reader to undertake a DIY project. Here’s his story. — PL]
By Nick Tavares
Inspired by Bryan Justman’s classic jersey project, I decided to make my own recreation of the Bruins’ black sweater from the 1948-49 season, complete with Milt Schmidt’s No. 15.
I’d never really sewn anything before (I’m a sheltered 26, I suppose), but Rachel gave me a crash course, and I was off. I found that that double-sided, iron-on ribbon helped hold the crest, numbers, and stripes in place before I began to sew, so that could be a helpful tip to fellow sewing newbies. Total cost for the finished product? About $10, shirt included. [There are several additional photos here. — PL]
Rachel’s an avid DIYer, too. While we were watching the Red Sox and Rays in the ALCS, we started talking about the patches that teams wear on their hats and sleeves when they get to the Series, and she said something along the lines of, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a bag with a patch for every Red Sox World Series?” So we started talking, and when she found a bag that she liked (a canvas L.L. Bean bag, very heavy-duty), I scoured eBay and found a bunch of Red Sox patches (including the special baseball-tongue/lips design the Rolling Stones rendered for their two concerts at Fenway in 2005).
Some of the patches included a warning telling the buyer not to apply them them to other products, but we didn’t worry about that. Once we had them all, Rachel started ironing and sewing (depending on the patch). She she purposely left some free space on each side in case the Sox win another World Series. Unlike most native New Englanders, she’s a naturally optimistic fan.
NHL Update: Paul here. Contrary to the scuttlebutt I passed along last week, the logo shown at left will still be on NHL jerseys next season. That’s the word from Reebok’s American PR head, Dan Sarro, who confirmed for me yesterday that the company’s wordmark will not be replacing the vector logo. So just insert a Gilda Radner-style “Never mind” on that one.
The Proctor Files, Continued: Yesterday’s Ricko Files entry prompted a typically thorough history lesson from sporting goods maven Terry Proctor, as follows:
The mesh football pants were another off-the-wall concept from our friends at Sand-Knit. The idea was that they would be more comfortable to wear, but they failed to remember that football was still played mostly on grass and dirt (baseball infields), so mud or dirt and sand got into the “porthole mesh” pores of the pant and made them uncomfortable to wear. They didn’t last very long.
The Utah Stars uniforms were also made by Sand-Knit. The jersey number style mimicked the style of the old Hollywood Stars PCL baseball team. The sock stars were individually applied to each sock.
The striped Marquette uniforms were from the Sand-Knit “SandMark Basketball Design” program. In the late 1960s, Sand-Knit came out with a complete basketball package, including jersey, shorts, stirrups, warm-up jacket, warm-up pants, and matching coaches’ shirts. The Marquette uniform shown was called “SandMark 11.” The Seattle SuperSonics uniform set was “SandMark 2.” The Austin Peay uniforms were in the “SandMark 12” set.
From the late ’60s through the ’70s Sand-Knit, was the Nike, Reebok, and Adidas of its day when it came to uniforms. The wilder the better. It was tough for us dealers to keep up with them.

Rusty Pliers Dept.: I’m getting a pair of wisdom teeth pulled this morning, so Phil will be minding the store today. The good news is that I figure my year can only get better from here; the bad news is that I’m calling a snow day for tomorrow. It’s possible that I may have a new ESPN column tomorrow, however — if so, I’ll put up a link for it. Otherwise, see you on Friday.
Sweden/Canada isn’t color on color per se. Sweden has never had a white jersey. Their lighter jersey has always been gold, ala Kings and Seals of the ’70s. If it was truly color on color, Sweden would’ve been wearing blue.
The Studs links are not working for me.
For example:

Not sure what went wrong — they were all working last night. I’ll have to tinker and see what happened. I’ve plugged in a new main entry for today, and I’ll go back to the Studs entry another day. Sorry for the switcheroo.

Off top of my head, Warriors were that way, too, almost from the time they moved to SF, certainly during years of “The City.” Likewise the original SuperSonics with surfer-stripe shorts. They wore yellow-gold at home. I think the first Cavaliers wore yellow-gold and, later, champagne gold, at home. Minnesota Gophers pretty much have worn gold at home (with a few years of white sprinkled in) for decades. In hockey, Phildelphia/Vancouver Blazers of WHA word light gold at home.

Warriors wore those golds at home, too. I’d forgotten that “sweat” shot was at L.A. Now, did they have only one set? Honestly don’t remember, thought I’d seen a blue set, but not sure.
The Studs pics all worked for me, on the RSS feed at least.
Meanwhile, I’m afraid Strictly Fitteds is the dumbest thing linked on this blog since whatever the last picture of an Oregon football jersey was.

For years in college basketball, it seemed that gold was a road uniform in the ACC but a home uniform in the Big Ten. Now it’s both home and road uniform everywhere. (Michigan wore it as both through the ’93 NCAA tournament.)
If you watch the NBA, gold is always a road uniform EXCEPT for the Lakers, who wear it at home. Indiana, Seattle, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Cleveland have worn gold as a road uniform in recent years. How did this rule come into being in the NBA?
And, of course, as Ricko points out, Golden State wore gold at home for years too, into the 1980s (their 1976 run to the championship, for example.)

All things considered, that Biggie cap looks way better than anything the marketing geniuses at New Era have come up with in the last 10-15 years.
And it would be ironic if this guy got his cap replaced and then someone beat the hell out of him thinking that he was the car thief…
OK, the Vector logo needs to go, its huge, that like Nike making a giant swoosh on their uniforms, ridiculous. The NBA has no logos on their uniforms just there warm ups, that maybe the only good the NBA has going.
Phew. I’ll be 29 in March and still have to have my wisdom teeth pulled. I’m petrified of it all so I’ve been putting it off. I was wondering whether I can put this off until I’m in my thirties, and as Paul seems to be in his early thirties and HE’S still having them out…well, if it’s good enough for Uni Watch it’s good enough for me.

I’m 44 (glad you think I look younger). Thought I was gonna get away with never having to get them pulled. No such luck. Off to the oral surgeon right now.
Great idea from Rachel on ironing/sewing the patches on a tote bag. I’m going to have to do that. But with Cardinals patches, of course.
I didn’t have to have any wisdom teeth pulled til my 40s. It was a breeze.
my guess on the 09 would be because that is his graduation year, class of 2009
I had a wonderful collection of Etch A Sketch art, but the ’89 earthquake here in the Bay Area ruined every piece.
Matt- I’m getting mine done this spring at the ripe old age of 22. doctor told me the younger you are the better, something about not being old and healing faster ;)
The roller hockey sweater is incredible. Wow.

Had mine done last summer, the surgery itself was a breeze. But aparently one of mine in particular was “extraordinarily” impacted(surgeon’s word, not mine), ened up with a dry socket on that one. Do anything to avoid the dry socket. Besides that, it was no bid deal. Plus I lost about 5 lbs, one can only eat so much pudding etc.
Paul, I had two wisdom teeth pulled last year right before Halloween.

Thankfully, they pulled the two on top and not the lazy, horizontal, impacted lower two!
My sincere advice: bring your IPOD so that you can’t hear anything. The sound of carrots snapping will haunt you for the rest of your days if you don’t!
The Red Sox “1901-2001 – 100 Seasons” patch is the worst one. They can’t do math. That’s 101 seasons.

Paul,
I had all four impacted and removed back in the early 90’s. It shouldn’t be that bad unless you get dry socket. Follow all post op instructions to avoid infections and stock up on pudding and mashed potatoes and you should be fine….Good luck.
As far as yellow/gold uniforms go they do seem to be a trend. George Mason link uses them as their third uniform and have worn them at both home and away games this year.
You guys are giving me flashbacks to having a dentist practically standing in my lap, leaning over with pliers, tugging and twisting, trying to pull those teeth. The crunching and breaking noises coming from my mouth were disturbing, but of course I couldn’t feel a thing. Good times.

I think I was 26 when I had mine done. They were impacted, but not severely. Like you, I put it off as long as I could. After they got infected a few times, I decided to pull the trigger on the surgery. Rinsing your mouth out with peroxide gets old quickly.
I was unconscious for the extraction and it went fine. The procedure was done on a Wednesday and I felt well enough to go to a Widespread Panic show two days later.

Ya might say that the post-op medication enhanced the experience.
Wisdom teeth were removed when I was 14, shortly after getting braces off my teeth so they wouldn’t knock things out of line. They did two in one session and the other two a few weeks later. The first session went very smoothly. I remembered liking the nitrous, so the second time I bumped up the setting for the nitrous when the staff wasn’t looking. Of course I passed out almost as soon as I stood up.
More recently I’ve had a pair of root canals. If they get the pain meds right, they’re bearable. The first time they gave me Percocet which did nothing for the pain but had a viagra-like side effect. Here’s hoping for the right pharmaceuticals for Paul.
Someone please tell the Verizon Center that their hockey team switched logos a couple of years ago…

About those Sand-Knit sets mentioned by Terry Proctor … I have a hunch they were marketed to high schools and colleges as such. He’d know best, of course. I say that because my high school wore that Sonics uni in the early ’70s. I’ll have to see if I have old pix to scan.

Yes, but there is a clear distinction between color-on-color as Sweden/Canada and color-on-color as in the USC/UCLA game this past season.
Sweden’s yellow jersey is their home jersey, they do not have a white one. Technically yes, it’s color-on-color, however, it’s not as noteworthy a mention because yellow is the primary home uniform of the team. Maybe because it’s international hockey and people aren’t has familiar with it, but, like I said earlier, this is no different than the Lakers. Of course we don’t mention every time the Lakers wear their yellow jerseys at home!
I think for UW purposes, we mostly are defining true, color-on-color as a situation when both teams in said event are wearing, depending on the sport, their home or road unis simultaneously. As in USC/UCLA, Buffalo/Miami (OH) and Pitt/Oregon State in football this past year.
Of course, there are some gray areas, notably when teams sport, or have sported, a traditional white and a gold/yellow home alternate like the Penguins in the early 80s, when Pitt basketball brought out the gold unis earlier this year or in years when Georgetown had both white and gray unis that they would wear at home.
My view on wisdom teeth is if they dont bother you leave them in. I re-enlisted in the Army when i was 35 and they were dead set on taking them out when i first got back in, i had never had a problem with them. All through AIT the dentist hounded me until i finally caved and said he could do it, the guy was a light Colonel that bragged that he’d been a dentist for 25 years, blah blah blah. Long story short i ended up with infected gums due to the fact that he left all kind of debris between my gums and my teeth. So a two week ordeal turned into a two month ordeal. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Actual thigh and knee pads.
What I remember most about have all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at same time is uni-related, honest.
Was done in the hospital on an in-patient basis the day before Thanksgiving, ’68. So what do I remember? I remember sitting in the hospital bed, waiting to be discharged, eating red Jello and watching the Eagles (in b&w, of course) in their double shoulder-looped, double-sleeve striped road unis (with the kelly helmets) playing the Lions in the snow in Detroit. About all I remember of the game is Eagles’ Sam Baker kicking (or attempting) a field goal and the footing sucked.

Good job on the DIY sweater. Seeing it’s an old style jersey, the DIY factor makes it look almost real. Doing a current jersey (ie. Kane, Zetterberg, Price) wouldn’t look as right. Great job!!

Was that game the one and only time Penn State wore white shoes? Somewhere around that time…when Mike Guman was their feature running back…they wore white, head to toe, in the Super Dome. An adidas turf shoe as I recall…and was against Alabama, I’m pretty sure.

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 18 and I can assure you that it is a very simple procedure. I opted to be gassed and thus was asleep for the entire surgery, which I highly recommend. The lady told me to count back from 10 and I didn’t even hit nine before I was out. I woke up two hours later, a little woozy, but otherwise fine, they gave me 3 tylenol-3 caplets and sent me on my way. I was actually eating steak the next day despite looking a bit like a chipmunk. Oh, and I feel I should mention that none of my wisdom teeth had punctured the gums as they were all growing in horizontally and if I had waited even a few years I would have ended up in the infamous ‘Big Book of British Smiles’ from The Simpsons.
All in all, it was piece of cake.
Best and worst in logos: Only one true sports reference. But a lot of sports advertisers are mentioned on the worst list (go figure).

Yeah, your memory serves you well. Penn State was wearing white shoes. I can’t even remember what I’m wearing RIGHT NOW without looking down.
And Bama had TV numbers — they just weren’t on their jerseys.

Yup, and but for that single game the list of major college football teams that have never, ever worn anything but black shoes would include three schools, instead of only Michigan and USC. Although some of the Nike two-tones that a number of Trojans wore this year—especially the new LT 2.1—come very, very close to being more white than black.

Yes, most of the players are wearing them.
These two teams are not upper-echelon of ELITE as Nike calls them, at least in NCAA Hoops. These are older template, Miami, Oregon State uniforms thus are not top of the line.
My theory is that they provide teams like USC, ‘Bama, OU, UT etc. higher tech gear thus eliminating the need for “bulky’ padding.
It’s really an idea of quality.

Wich isn’t strange unto itself, but the Bowl Patch placement looked SO much better on the Tulsa unis than those of Ball State, whose looked AWFUL.

Ball State had a patch on their uniforms (NCAA football logo?) in the location where Tulsa placed their bowl patch. Ball State didn’t want to cover that up, I guess so they resorted to that awful placement…which would’ve looked better completely up on the shoulder IMHO. Tulsa either didn’t have a patch where they placed their bowl patch or didn’t care that they covered it up in favor of aesthetics.
Re: thigh and kneepads. I thought they were mandatory in college football, along with mouthguards.
Re: Black shoes looking more white and vice versa. I always wondered what is there a standard as to what is considered just an accent color versus the shoe getting dangerously close to being out of uniform, at least in the NFL game. Is there a percentage guideline that the league uses? Personally, I think a lot of the shoes that are considered white really have a more black shoe look (which I think is done by design by the makers so as to give the players the look they’d rather have should they feel that way).
Re: college football uniform rules. Are there specific rules on the books as to a team wearing consistent shoe/sock color/combos? I vaguely recall there being an NCAA rule shortly after Walt Harris got to Pitt and it became Pittsburgh and they first used the gold/blue motif. I think it was that you could go either with high socks or low socks but the entire team had to be uniform. I also am remembering them using an adidas sock that looked more like a soccer sock with three thin stripes near the top. This would have been a few years in though, because when they first made the switch the uniforms were by Champion.
This past season Pitt wore black shoes, some games they wore white socks, others black but there wasn’t any mixing and matching from individual players perspectives. It was uniform.

Those conference flag/football/pennant logos look so stupid…especially come bowl season.
I wonder if it’s an NCAA mandate (I’m sure it is) that you have to wear bowl patches on the chest? I miss the days of the Orange & Rose Bowl logos on the shoulders of the participating teams.

Doug,
The shoe question came into play this weekend. The NFL states that cleats must have only one accent color, that which the team pre-determines before the season.
For example, the Giants have red accents on the cleats:
This weekend, there were two instances where this rule was broken.
1. In this pic from the Eagles/Vikings, the player behind AP is weaing Black Nike Spuer Bad 2’s with both purple and yellow accents.

2. Antrel Rolle of the Cardinals, was wearing the New Nike Speed Vapors in Black with white and red accents:

As far as sock regulations go: In 1998, my senior year in college, we were given multiple pairs of the NFL two-tone socks, green at top, white bottom.
I did not like them, so I would wear long greeen socks to match the provided socks and then wear low whites.
One game at Sacred Heart University, I only wore low whites with Nike Air Zoom Turf Jets.
The ACTUAL shoe in question, that I still own:

While stretching in pre-game , one of the refs did a walk-through and mentioned to me that if I did not conform to what the rest of the team was wearing, it would result in a a penalty.
What did I do? i quickly ran over to my EM and got a pair, reluctantly I might add.
I only had one wisdom tooth form for some reason, and it’s just hanging out below the surface not causing any problems. Sounds like I’m missing out on a lot of fun.

Two things
1.) I had my wisdom teeth out (2 uppers) and only used Nitrous. Not a problem, my dentist called me the next day and asked if I had any questions or concerns. My only question was where the pain was, I didn’t have any at all. I was 23.

On a PC, it’s the print screen key. That’ll copy everything to your clipboard. If you do alt + prt scr, that’ll only grab the active window.

There are probably a lot of ways, but I just press fn+prt sc (also the insert key), that takes the “picture”. Then shift+insert the image into some kind of photo program (I use a very old edition of Photo Paint), crop it, then upload to photobucket.

Yes, I admit it. However, she often mentions she has done her hard time — meaning that game — when declining to attend games these days. Ah, times change.
A small anecdote for Nick and anyone in the Hockey wing:
I was born and raised in the suburbs of NYC. My parents vacationed in Cape Cod, a mere 4 1/2 hours away in Mass.
After 10 summers of renting small houses near the bay, they jumped at the chance to buy a small piece of land and build an extremely modest house.
AFter it was built, we would go up for bits and pieces of the summers and most holidays.
We would often bring family friends as well and one time we went up with friends whom had three boys, all hockey nuts.
The house on the crest of our street was much larger than any others on the street which prompted us to always snoop around. All I knew was that the owner drove a fancy red corvette with a Bruins decal in the window.
One day, lots of fancy cars were driving up to the place so naturally we went asnooping.
As soon as the owner saw us, he invited us in. No sooner did we walk onto the deck did my friends jaws all hit the floor. A bunch of the Bruins were there including Ted Donato, Andy Moog and I think Steve Heinze.

Cool story on how I got engaged…
My g/f and I were living together at the time and we had just graduated from college, and we moved to Janesville, WI from Green Bay. (We kind of knew it was time to get hitched, but nothing was official yet) Anyways, my HD TV was on the fritz. The picture was all pixelated and was barely watchable. So I said to my g/f, “Hey we need to go and get a new HD TV right now because the football season has started and I am not watching the Pack without High Def.” She responded, “OK, we can go, but then we have to go look at engagement rings!” What was I supposed to do? The Pack were playing the Bears that week for goodness sakes! So we went looking at rings after purchasing a wonderful Samsung 40″ HDTV. I ended up getting a ring the next day without her knowing and then New Years Eve day of 2007, we were about to visit the Packers Hall of Fame since we were in Green Bay visiting friends for the New Year (We both went to St. Norbert College) and I asked her to marry me right between the statues of Vince Lombardi and Curly Lambeau at Lambeau Field. And Lambeau Field is where we are having our reception on the 4th of July of this year!
And thanks for the help of the screen grabs. I knew it had to be something easy.
Course, Nick, you could do a link jersey, but you may get adverse reactions…

Weren’t “Chiefs” royal blue, not navy, though? Remember reading their unis were patterned after the WHA Fighting Saints…who definitely wore royal.
Well good thing for me my blank is actually royal blue. :)

Nick – Fab job on the jersey. My question: Where did you find the numbers and letter (not to mention the striping ) all for under $10? These last two articles of DIYers has given me the itch to try it.

There was a ticket item about someone who made an AWESOME Orioles sweatshirt too.
I would love to know where you can get a buncg of those team patches besides Team patch.com.
Can I ask a weird question — I know its been the entire day and there’s small chance either Phil or Paul would answer me, but…
“We loped on back across Arkansas I whipped her brother and I whipped her pa”
What was that about?

Oops, thought you said the jersey was navy. My bad. That’s why I suggested the Roadrunners; pretty sure they were only WHA team that wore navy.

In the bargain bin, I found felt for 25 cents a piece (about $1.50 total), and the yellow ribbon was right around $1. The white was flannel, and that was under $2 as well (just over a yard). Like Bryan wrote originally, you can find a lot of good stuff in the remnants bin. I also already had thread, so I didn’t count that in the total.
I found the long-sleeve T at Target (a heavy-knit jerzees shirt) on sale for under $5, and that’s where I probably got the luckiest. Those heavy-knit cotton T-shirts are great.
I really like how the flannel looks and feels on the jersey, for the record. The next time I try something like this, I’ll shell out another couple of bucks to get flannel again if I can’t find what I need in the remnants pile. And like someone else wrote, the nice thing with recreating old sweaters is that hand-cutting felt actually gives you an accurate look, where if I tried to make a current Bruins jersey, it wouldn’t look as good.
As far as a Klima sweater… I’m staying far, far away.
Paul’s orginal story had to be yanked?
On wisdom teeth extraction day?
How ironic.
Or is it coincidendental?
I forget.

Wash (and then iron) the felt before you sew it on! Likewise the shirt. Actually, anything that CAN be washed SHOULD be washed first. If you don’t, you could end up with real lummpy DIY jersey the first time you wash it.
In other words, learn from an old guy’s mistakes. LOL
Although, Nick, I’m guessing you already know that.
I got my wisdom teeth pulled at 28 after putting it off for a long while. I should have done it earlier before they impacted. That made them more difficult to remove.
Well, at least they’re out now.

Oh, I was about to start before the missus told me that — I had no idea that you needed to do that. So I washed the shirt and everything (except the ribbon) beforehand.
So, yes, to everyone else: wash this stuff first, or else things will start shrinking at different speeds.

No, but it’s not blue denim either. It’s a work vest like construction workers wear, and it’s brown. It’s actually way more comfy than the “approved volunteer wear” vests that they provide.
And the patches are super easy to sew on to the vest because it’s “heavy duty”. LOL

doesn’t it bother you that you have to get up in the morning and you have to put on a bunch of flair from those other zoos?
The front right panel on the front of the vest is covered in the local zoo’s patches. But everyone asks about some of the other ones. The San Diego Zoo patch, for example, gets a lot of questions. So does the Milwaukee Zoo. :o)
It’s all about getting people to interact on my tours, and someone always asks about the patches. If it’s fun, everyone learns. A lesson taught with humour is a lesson retained.
I don’t mean to offend the English kid, but don’cha think that if you only had four fingers, and you chose to play soccer, being a goalie wasn’t the best idea? Good for him, and Puma, but soccer is the perfect sport for people without good hands, and he managed to make it much harder for himself.
Also, the Etch-a-Sketch guy is hands down the coolest thing I’ve seen here. Absolutely amazing. I’d buy something if he had anything I like.
