Uni Watch DIY Project: Building a Better Bucco Beanie

helmeton.JPG

Got a note the other day from reader Mike Williams (that’s him at right), who informed me a of a fun DIY project he’d recently undertaken:

I had read early last summer that the Twins’ base coaches had been wearing throwback helmets while on the field. I loved the concept and decided it’d be great if my hometown Pittsburgh Pirates adopted a similar look. But I wanted something a bit different, something less average, something less commercially available — something more pillbox-y.

I started by taking some head measurements and hat measurements using my replica pillbox cap. From those, I made a pattern, which I used to cut out a styrofoam mold. The mold was then covered with plastic wrap and petroleum jelly (as a mold release). I applied six or so layers of automotive fiberglass and polyester resin over the mold, one at a time. After everything cured, I pulled the helmet shell off of the mold, cut off the rough edges, and ground the edges into shape. Next came sanding and adding a little body putty to achieve a smooth finish.

After that I primed and painted the helmet — first yellow, then black (I used masking tape to mask the areas that would stay yellow). Several coats of clear followed. Lastly, I added interior padding, using double-stick carpet tape and some foam stolen from an old hockey helmet. Voilà!

I’m sorry I don’t have many step-by-step process photos. At the time I was doing this, I didn’t think it would be of any interest to anybody.

Great stuff. The final stage of the project, says Mike is “to get these things into the hands of the Pirates organization. Little effort and no progress have been made to date.” And that’s where Uni Watch comes in, because I know there are people in the Pirates’ PR office who follow this site. Hey, Dan Hart, these lids look pretty cool, don’tcha think? Let’s arrange to have your coaches wearing them in 2009.

Uni Watch News Ticker: While the rest of you were watching the second half of Sunday night’s Giants/Panthers game, I gathered with 10 friends for a major feast: the Bo Ssam dinner at Momofuku Ssam Bar. Lots of great food and drink, happy people, and good times, plus my friend Victoria Rich wore these awesome gloves, plus-plus she had these amazing Bettie Page buttons on her cardigan. Plenty of additional pics here. ”¦ Tremendous letterman sweater worn by the guy in the center of this photo. That’s the 1914 Jefferson School baseball team (courtesy of David Hill). ”¦ Jack Krabbe attended Saturday’s Cowboys/Ravens game in Dallas and documented one of history’s most disturbing displays of fandom. ”¦ According to this passage from Roy Blount Jr.’s book Three Bricks Shy of a Load, Dock Ellis “was once called upon suddenly to pinch-run. He ran out of the dugout wearing a Steelers warmup jacket. An umpire told he couldn’t run the bases dressed like that. So Ellis took off the warmup jacket and had nothing on underneath.” Sounds apocryphal to me, but a fun story nonetheless (with thanks to Joe Carney). ”¦ I have a feeling this is very old news for most of you, but I wasn’t aware that Dr Pepper was using a football-themed can design (with a reverse-field version for their diet product). ”¦ “After the WHL’s Portland Winter Hawks scored their first goal, fans tossed teddy bears onto the ice as part of a toy drive,” writes Dave Medina. “If you’ll notice they’re playing The Seattle Thunderbirds, and three of the four Seattle players have the same jersey, but the fourth (in the middle of the pic) is wearing a jersey seemingly featuring the team mascot.” Anyone know what that’s about? ”¦ Bizarre discovery by Matt Harris, who writes: “I was on the Jets web site, looking at illustrations of how the new stadium will look, and one view of the concourse area shows mock fans in jerseys and whatnot — including someone in green Strahan jersey.” Seems like way too many Pennington jerseys too, no? Must be an old illo, but that still doesn’t explain the Strahan thing. ”¦ Little-known fact about the Winter Classic jerseys: They make excellent cat pillows. Lots more “Awwww..!”-inducing photos here. ”¦ Now there’s an unusual helmet design. That’s Rancho Cordova High in California (as spotted by Scott Hansen). ”¦ Is Teemu Selanne’s injury due to Reebok’s excessively thin NHL socks? Yes, at least according to this article (with thanks to Paul Richard Cook). ”¦ “My grandfather, Joe Robson, loved his scotch and always kept it in this bottle, which is sterling silver on glass,” writes Justin Rectenwald. “He always told us that the bottle was stolen from the New York Athletic Club during Prohibition by his father, Earnest Walton Robson, a prominent NYC osteopath who was apparently a member of the ‘private club’ at that time. When my grandfather died, I got the bottle. I never did any research to confirm the story, but the bottom of the bottle has an etched logo similar to the one shown on the NYAC web site, which is good enough for me.” ”¦ Good catch by Jonathan Kinney, who spotted Adrian Peterson wearing an unusual mouthguard holder on Sunday (here’s another shot). Never seen this accessory before. Anyone..? ”¦ Remember how I mentioned this Cavs uni yesterday? Joshua Exline figures these shoes must but part of the package. ”¦ Cheesecake artist extraordinaire Rob Ullman‘s latest masterpiece is this treatment of Eric Braun‘s wife, Jinelle. ”¦ Anyone out there remember that some NFL players used to wear downhill skiing suits under their jerseys? I didn’t, until John Lesnick reminded me. ”¦ Very odd scene at Sammy Baugh’s funeral, where his football and ranching careers were represented sartorially (with thanks to Jason Brown). ”¦ Larry Johnson lost a shoe on Sunday (with thanks to Greg Riffenburgh). ”¦ The always-interesting Fleer Sticker Project devoted its Dec. 21st entry to this 1966 Browns/Redskins program. Note the stylized NFL logo at lower left — a major find! But that’s just the cover of the program. The interior pages feartured this Coke ad and two ads showing the Browns’ phantom “CB” helmet logo. Additional details, and many other treasures from the pages of this program, here. ”¦ Decal malfunctions last night for Lance Briggs and Roberto Garza (screen grabs courtesy of Tony Caliguiri). ”¦ Color-on-color games are becoming so common in college hoops that soon I’m gonna stop listing them — but not yet. That’s Vanderbilt and Furman from last night (thanks, Phil). … The 49ers will be wearing throwback uniforms and moustaches this weekend (thanks to Roger Faso).

Momofuku, isn’t that the name of Elvis Costello’s new album(well i guess it isn’t new now but his most recent.)

In the teddy bear picture, that looks like the same jersey to me… but with a teddy bear captured mid-air in front of the logo.
Momofuku, isn’t that the name of Elvis Costello’s new album(well i guess it isn’t new now but his most recent.)
Great catch. It’s too bad that the album was so mediocre.

The Seattle Thunderbirds picture isn’t showing a different sweater, but if you zoom in you can see it’s a flying stuffed animal right in front of logo.

Caps announce Gartner jersey retirement ceremony link.

Of jersey relevance in the article:
Prior to the ceremony, the current Capitals will wear special white retro jerseys during pregame warmups. Each jersey will have No. 11 on them along with the current player’s name. The jerseys will be autographed by Gartner and each player and will be available at a silent auction during the game with a portion of the proceeds going to World Vision. World Vision, Gartner’s charity of choice, is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

The Caps will wear white jerseys during the game — as Gartner’s Capitals teams did at the Cap Centre — while Toronto will wear dark jerseys.

Re: Color-on-color in college basketball:

It’s not a new fad for eams to wear gold or silver as a home jersey while the visiting team wears another colored jersey. What is new is that teams are wearing colors other than gold or silver at home while the visiting team wears a colored jersey. Gold and silver have long been alternate or even primary home uniforms (Georgetown, Notre Dame many years ago, Michigan, Iowa, Wake Forest, just to name a few). Michigan wore gold all the way through the ’93 NCAA tournament even though it was sometimes the home team and sometimes the visiting team.

I would guess that the Strahan jersey was colored incorrectly, because it looks like the Jets jerseys have the proper striping on the sleeves and the Strahan jersey looks like a Giants jersey just green. What’s weird is that there’s someone standing next to him with a plain Pennington jersey, while all the other Pennington jerseys are proper Jets jerseys. I’m guessing that plain one should have been a Manning jersey instead, and should have been painted blue as well…

In regard to the Jets’ stadium concourse picture, I had a brochure about the upcoming Cowboys’ Stadium (Picked it up before construction started at a Cowboys’ pro shop in Dallas) where one of the ads on the stadium scoreboard was for a Detroit sports radio station- complete with frequency, call letters and the official station logo.

Right, gold, yellow, gray and silver have all been pretty common as home colors for college hoops teams. When I first got into college basketball, I thought it was neat (and odd) that Georgetown always wore an off white uniform at home.

Before Michigan fans jump my case, let me correct that to “Michigan wore MAIZE all the way through the ’93 NCAA tournament.”

Nice shot of the ’66 Skins-Browns program. That was actually the cover for four other road games for the Skins. This was the first year of what seems to be some kind of “co-op” program for NFL program covers. Some years, it was a standard cover designed around the visiting team and used by the home team. There were also years that covers were created and used for a three or four week period by most all NFL teams. Only once for a home game, but depending on where a road game was, it might appear on two or three road programs.

I don’t have much back up on other teams but an immense amount on the Skins and this trend ended after the 1997 season. After ’97, teams seemed to be on their own to create cover artwork.

Just a quick comment on the Baugh funeral pic, I grew up in Rotan where Sammy lived and the two gentlemen pic are father and son. The father with the cowboy had in the pic is a well known former coach from the local high schools and his son has been a local ref for jr high and high school games for years. I dont know if the photographer posed them like that but I can assure you there were more that a few people there wearing boots and hats.

where are the holding cells? where are the fans chanting “show us your tits breasts”? where are the fights & the random dude power-booting over the side of the railing?

so many inaccuracies

In the Jets concourse photo, some of the jerseys are just plain green, if they were blue they would be giants jerseys. its a coloring error. there was a giants version with everyone wearing blue.

Interesting to see the Dallas star shaved into that fan’s back hair.

I found another great example of back hair fan-dom.

It’s obvious the designer just took a picture from a Jets/Giants game and colorized it…no biggie

I’m with Liz on the bear picture. That’s just a bear mid-flight covering the logo on that player’s uni. Great timing on the picture, though, to capture it like that…

Hey Paul I have a feeling that Adrian Peterson mouthguard is not a mouthguard at all but I think it is a “Camel Pack”. Like the military uses…just a hunch…

great call! it must have been from an august preseason game, since there are so many shorts and short sleeves; also there’s a kid at the snack bar in a white shockey (giants) jersey and another vendor hawking a white giants jersey (looks to be #20)

Thats not Roberto Garza, it’s Olin Kreutz. Note the captain patch on the jersey, Olin is a team captian.

The ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones also did a teddy bear toss on Friday, December 12th, in a game against the Wheeling Nailers. They collected more than 650 stuffed animals, over $3,300 in value.

The Cyclones are also going to have an Obama bobblehead night (wearing a Cyclones jersey, of course) on January 24th for the first 3,000 fans.

Does anyone know why certain Packers were wearing white undershirts last night? They’ve worn green for the longest of time (and consistently across the team) on the road, just like wearing white at home (except for a few DBs who wore green against Houston).

You beat me to it!

A couple of other notes from the ticker:

1. Love those helmet designs.
2. Justin Rectenwald’s Scotch bottle and the backsstory are GREAT.
3. Bettie Page is/was very hot.
4. Those Lebrons are very cool as is the “chalk” advertising. If you watch closely, you will notice Lil’ Wayne, a prominent rap artist, not to be confused with LI Phil.

Weiden and Kennedy have returned to the formula that they used with the Jordan line to promote those shoes.

More story and plot, few shots of the shoes to whet our appetites. Let our imaginations run rampant.

The “Lebrons” line of ads with Mr. james starring as all four alter-egos are especially clever, especially the “Summer Madness” commercial.

Its not one picture, its a series of pictures that have been mashed together in a miserable attempt at photoshopping.

I mean, the lighting is different on each person. Half are pale, half are dark, half have the sun coming from the right and half from the left.

The Jets jerseys are comically funny. First the Strahan, then, the Manning turned Pennington. Then, you can clearly see a Jim Kelly turned green jersey (and, if I’m not mistaken, a Bills’ Phil Simms turned green jersey in front of him in line), not to mention the countless other Giants-turned-Jets jerseys. But my favorite is on the right side. Its a Falcons jersey turned green with a Jets stripe with no name or number!

All that said, why they left 2 Giants jerseys as is in there is beyond me.

Calls on the T’birds jersey all seem right…

On a stadium note, Thunderbirds are playing their last three games at KeyArena and move into their new Kent digs. No Sonics, no hockey, what will happen to the Key?

Is it me, or does it seem like the only teams to have consistant helmet decal malfunctions in the NFL are the Giants and the Bears? Could this have to do with the fact they are both cold weather teams, or maybe that the decals are thin (branch like NY and C as opposed to solid logos like the Jags or Cowboys)?

Combination of both

Cold weather will make any adhesive brittle, and it only compounds the problem when there are thin-ish strips on a shiny and smooth helmet.

They were a sensational IHL team when they played there. Guys like Stefan Ustorf, Gilbert Dionne, Erik Cole, Corey Hirsch were solid contributors back then.

Cole is now an Edmonton Oiler; Hirsch played for a number of NHL teams; and Dionne won a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens and then played out his career in the minors and Europe.

The ‘Clones do have an AHL affiliation in Milwaukee where they wear black pants, but the Nashville Predators are their NHL affiliate, and Nashville never wore black pants in their existence so they can’t be hand-me-downs. They have had an affiliation with Montreal and Hamilton since 2006 and neither of those teams wear black either.
Sorry, I am taking over the message board today, but Rank is regularly loaned to (and probably owned) by the Portland Pirates of the AHL. I believe they wear the black and red.
But their parent team, the Sabres, do not. They don’t hand out NHL equipment in the AHL.

Just my two cents on the concourse rendering…
I work at an architectural firm and when we produce renderings like those, the people all come from a stock library of people in all sorts of different positions, configurations, etc.
While this one may still be a photo of a previous Jets/Giants game as suggested, it just seems unlikely that the people would line up with the current design so nicely (like the people on the ramp in the background, or leaning on the concession counter). Just from my experience, those are either stock ‘scale figures’ adjusted to have Jets gear on, or someone just compiled a bunch of football fan (mostly Jets in this case) pics, and photoshopped the colors/names. Which explains some of the small scale issures (Mr. 17 vs. the Walking Boys)

When they do the “dress up like their parents” night, it is simply beautiful. They are affiliates of both Montreal and Nashville, and they generally wear the parent club jersey with their logo 2x a year. The Canadiens jersey with the red/white/blue cyclones logo are truly a thing of beauty.

And Teebz, you are right, the ‘Clones are the best sporting organization in Cincinnati. All the players are classy, the coach is great, and they win on a regular basis. I, personally, try to attend somewhere around 20 – 30 games a year.

The only guy who didn’t makeit with Washington was Ustorf, and I always thought he was better than what the scouts thought.
So three logo problems? For the Bears in single-digit temps, that’s a pretty good showing. They really need to consider doing something with those decals. Maybe they need to go with a solid navy blue oval-shape with the C screened on it, rather than using the fully die-cut C.

And speaking of logos, interesting in that link there are only 3 teams using those same logos today (with maybe some minor tweaks).
It’s that and the narrow strips that make up their logos. Green Bay rarely has this type of issue (at least in today’s games). They have had some issues with the helmet stripe and the “G” during the Lombardi era.

This makes me wonder about the Broncos, though, as they’re pretty cold, and have various thin details all over their logo.

There’s actually some logic to the Colt-Dallas thing. I know, I know, that IS highly unusual.

The Dallas Texans, who moved to Baltimore to become the Colts, had been in the West.

The Cowboys came into the league in ’60, the Vikings in ’61, and the new teams had to be put somewhere. Minnesota’s proximity to Green Bay, Chicago and Detroit made them a lock for the West.

Cowboys’ first season in ’60 was interesting. As the 13th team in a league with a 12-game season, they simply played everyone else once. Didn’t win a game, but did tie the Giants, which might have made putting them in the East seem okay, since that was a pretty good little seed for a rivalry.

Not a problem. I honestly didn’t know that was what it was called.

It was just a unique design, perhaps it was overkill with the “V” on the sleeves and shorts/breezers/pants as well. Maybe it would have been thought of more highly if they had stuck with just a front logo. I don’t know though, the design lasted seven years so it doesn’t seem like it was that much hated then, even though it ends up on “worst sports uni” lists 20 years later.

The sleeves and leg “V”s were fine for the four years they went with a more traditional front logo, thought they accented it well.

It was a major downgrade, in my opinion, when they switched to a white sweater and dropped the accent “V”s. Way too plain.

Now that Vancouver has retrofied their current look with the original blue and green and stink/rink logo (also a great look), the time has come for a third jersey throwing back to the “V for Victory” look.

I noticed that Mr. 17 in the “jets” picture is wearing Mandals…seriously, to a football game?! excellent breakdown by everyone. What I can’t get over is that the Jets actually PAID someone to do this; they should demand a refund.

1967-68 Standings

Eastern Division
Montreal Canadiens
New York Rangers
Boston Bruins
Chicago Blackhawks
Toronto Maple Leafs
Detroit Red Wings

Western Division
Phildadelphia Flyers
Los Angeles Kings
St. Louis Blues
Minnesota North Stars
Pittsburgh Penguins
Oakland Seals

As you can see, it was the Original Six Division vs. the Expansion Six Division.
When did the Golden Seal move/fold?

became the cleveland barons in, i think 1975 or 76, and the barons merged with the north stars (but folded the barons)

Didn’t Canucks and Sabres come in together in ’70, one in West, one in East…and then Flyers and Black Hawks also switched places?

Seals became Cleveland Barons, who “merged into” (folded) the North Stars.

Did anyone get a screen shot of Al Harris’s biker shorts last night? They were exceptionally short for the coldest game of the year. Players should not be allowed to take the field unless their pants go below their knees, obviously the fine has no affect.

That’s correct, Phil. They are officially the last team to have folded in the NHL. The previous team was the Brooklyn Americans in 1942.

To take it a step further, when the Gunds were awarded an expansion franchise for San Jose in 1991 in return for giving up the idea of moving the North Stars out of Minnesota, they were permitted to pick 24 players and prospects from the North Stars. San Jose and Minnesota then both took part in the expansion draft.

So in a far-featched sense, the Seals (as transformed into the Barons and absorbed into the North Stars, who were then split in two) were coming back “home” to the Bay Area.

About the Jet’s concourse mock up, obviously the figures are merely representative of scale etc (although even that looks dodgy!), and of course accuracy of what the people are wearing would be unimportant. I used to work in the graphics department of a architectural company and these things are always secondary importance. Of course, one of the benefits years ago was everything was hand drawn, so the details probably would have been more accurate than the quick photoshopped figures the stick on these days!

Not to split hairs…but for the sake of accuracy…the Barons were merged with the existing Minnesota North Stars in June of 1978, for the 1978-79 season.

The expansion draft that offically absorbed the four remaining WHA teams took place on 6/13/79, one year after the Barons/North Stars merger. The first season for the “expansion” WHA teams was 1979-80.

They do these seasonal themes, so now they’re elves. Around Thanksgiving you get them dressed as pilgrims, slicing a turkey, etc. The generic ads will have things like the players dressed as furnace installers visiting a customer’s house.

Haha…no worries. Unfortunetly, I’m old enough to remember all the movement and merging that went on back then somewhat clearly.

Another interesting fact about the NHL-WHA merger was, in the NHL’s eyes, it wasn’t a merger at all. The four surviving WHA teams that were accepted into the NHL had to pay a $6M expansion fee to join, in addition to having their rosters raided by the other NHL teams (the WHA teams were allowed to protect 4 players, 2 goalies and 2 skaters). And these teams could bring none of their past WHA team/individual records with them.

Bitter stuff, huh?

No doubt. Toss in the fact the NHL wouldn’t recognize WHA stats, but at the same time also wouldn’t consider 18-year-old Wayne Gretzky a rookie in 1979-80 because of his WHA time.

6. Vancouver – V-neck is still unique.
7. Philadelphia – love the orange Flyers.
8. Minnesota – simple, yet clearly Minny.
9. Buffalo – perfect jersey.
10. Hartford – how can you not love the logo?
11. Edmonton – great contrasts.
12. New York Islanders – classic. Very decent.
13. Winnipeg – the shoulder-to-wrist yoke look is bad.
14. Toronto – decent, but I like the throwbacks.
15. Calgary – the red was better than the white.
16. Detroit – that logo looks mighty small.
17. New Jersey – the original Christmas jersey.
18. Washington – they really do need stars.
19. St. Louis – that blue is too pastel.
20. Los Angeles – was never a fan of that crown.
21. Pittsburgh – far too much yellow.

SO I just hit the jackpot and landed 3 tickets to the Winter Classic today, I’ll be sure to have my camera with me to get the fun pictures of people displaying jerseys over their winter gear. I myself will be bundled in my Dad’s fireman’s turnout gear, with a real Blackhawks barber pole style sweater from Ebbit’s Field. The thing is beautiful – it’s a real knit sweater with a felt number and crest. I’ll take pictures, but I won’t be recognizable, and if I am that means I’m too drunk to feel the cold.

I guess anytime the existing league doesn’t take in the entire new league it isn’t a merger, not techically. The new league folds and its cherry-picked “survivors” join the older league. The NBA-ABA combined the same way. So did the NFL and AAFC. Only the NFL-AFL joining together was a “merger,” in the truest sense of the word.

I think the NFL-AAFC situation was the sole instance of a team in the older league leaving a market to the newer team. The Cleveland Rams left for Los Angeles due to the success of the Browns.

OK…I\’m gonna do it this way…since the Rangers, Blackhawks, Canadiens, Bruins and Red Wings are esentially the same jerseys they wear to this day…they will be excluded from being ranked. So in that case, my ranking goes like this….

1- Winnipeg Jets. This is the road jersey. I like the way they reversed the color on the background on the crest and the word \”Jets\” as opposed to the home version.

2- Toronto Maple Leafs- plain, but nice. I believe this jersey also had, at one time, blue leaf patches on both shoulders.

3- Los Angeles Kings- this is the road jersey. When you say L.A. Kings, this is what I think of. Not the \”Gretzky- gangster black and silver- Kings\”.

4- Hartford Whalers- no comentary needed here. Cool hockey jersey.

5- Buffalo Sabres- another cool hockey jersey they never should\’ve gotten away from.

6- Quebec Nordiques- all 4 of the WHA teams brought cool jerseys with them.

7- Calgary Flames- even though it\’s nothing more than the Atlanta Flames home jersey with the new Calgary \”C\” on it, it\’s simple and clean. Which is what most teams have strayed from.

8- New York Islanders- my team. I always liked the royal better than the navy blue. And I always liked the home better than the road, but it falls in line with most of the others. Simple and not cluttered.

9- St. Louis Blues- classic.

10- Pittsburgh Penguins- always liked \”colored\” home jerseys. Kings did the same thing.

The rest…

11- Philadelphia Flyers
12- Washington Caps
13- Edmonton Oilers
14- Vancouver Canucks
15- New Jersey Devils- Merry Christmas!! as they used to say…
16- Minnesota North Stars- take out the black and it\’s sweet. With black? Not so sweet

9. Sabres: fans in buffalo miss this one with good reason
10. Bruins: great, understated logo, jersey just OK

16. Flames: preferred the red version of this one better

18. Rangers: never moved me
19. Nordiques: liked the fleur-de-lis (sp?) not so much the logo

Hey Guys, Ive sent some emails to Paul but I guess he didnt get them.
Which one is his proper email?
Thanks

Is the black stripe something else North Stars fans can blame Norm Green for?

I seem to recall he decided that black was the new black and would increase the teams popularity.

1A. Montreal, great colors & logo. Love the “H.”
1B. Detroix, simple and clean.
1C. Toronto, see #1B.
1D. Chicago, classic.
05. Buffalo, love the saber/bison logo, great colors.
06. Minnesota, I agree that link is better but unique colors for the era and iconic logo.
07. NY Rangers, the diagonal letters are great.
08. Philla, love the orange/black combo.
09. NY Islanders, royal is better than navy.
10. New Jersey, white, red, black. What are you gonna do about it?
11. Calgary, but I still hate the Flames.
12. Hartford, I miss the whale tail.
13. Winnipeg, the longitudinal stripe down the sleeves was distinct.
14. Boston, classic sweater but I’ve never loved black in a primary role.
15. Edmonton, love the colors but the orange shoulder pads never won me over.
16. Quebec, there needs to be more fleur de lis (is that right for plural?) out there.
17. St. Louis
18. Washington
19. Pittsburgh, over gold/load.
20. Kings, ewwwwww!
21. Vancouver – the vee, although super unique, is awful. Stings the eyes.

…and for the record, “Norm Green” is an expletive in my neck of the woods.

Forgive me if this has been posted already, but there is one of those neon Notre Dame basketball jerseys from the 1992-93 season on eBay. Thing is, the neck/arm piping is waaaay too thick. FAKE!

I would have gotten a much bigger kick if they hadn’t been photoshopped in and just stood in for the pictures. Robbie Gould bigger than Tommie Harris? C’mon!

2. Bruins
3. Oiler=Colors work well+Logo
4. Whalers=Favorite Hockey Logo
5. Rangers=Love the Drop Shado
6. Sabres
7. Canucks=Just plain cool
8. Flames=Love the color combo
9. North Stars
10.Devils=Great Logo

Boring:

Caps
Islanders
Red Wings

Blackhawks just doesn’t do it for me.

Yeah, it might be preseason, but it’s still a great deal.

Dear apparent Pirates office workers who follow Uniwatch,

Being a huge hockey fan and northwest PA hockey winger, I hate to gloss over the awesome discussions about hockey jerseys.

But you know, if there’s someone watching this site that works for the Pirates… then I have something to say. Do you realize that this website has taken the time to HIGHLIGHT a great Pirates themed idea and nobody on this message board so far has commented about it? What does that tell you about the respect out there for this team?

Take this guy’s great idea for the basecoach helmets and run with it. Use the money from the dumb freaking bobbleheads of players that you’ll probably sell off in August and make this helmet a reality for the basecoaches.

I don’t think I can possibly take any more mediocrity from this organization.

1. Get rid of the red jerseys, I’m talking press conference, formal apology from Frank and Neal.

2. Get rid of the pinstripes. You’re not the Yankees, stop trying to fool us.

3. Scale yourself down. Go to a simple jersey set; road greys and home whites. Nobody buys your jerseys outside of Pittsburgh (and even then its a stretch) anymore so stop trying to push merchandise by creating another alternate.
4. Take all the money you saved from recycling those red jerseys into Primanti napkins, getting rid of the IDEA that anyone gives a crap about bobbleheads of Nyjer Morgan, only doing fireworks on the fourth of July like IT SHOULD BE….

AND BUY SOME BETTER PLAYERS!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

OK, I’ll play. I’m basing these opinions solely on what’s pictured.

1 – Buffalo – Great colors, great logo, great stripes. Am I really putting this at #1? I guess I am.
2 – Detroit – This is so much better than the red one.
3 – Montreal – The one in the picture just doesn’t look right to me.
4 – Chicago – the one pictured is missing the shoulder patches, otherwise it would be higher.
5 – Philadelphia – I love the orange
6 – N.Y. Islanders – Did I mention that I love orange?
7 – Boston – Isn’t this another one that should have shoulder patches?
8 – Pittsburgh – the little skating penguin is cute.
9 – St. Louis – Not crazy about the yoke, but otherwise, pretty solid.
10 – Edmonton – I like orange to a point. This is too busy.
11 – Calgary – I like the logo; the colors — not so much
12 – N.Y. Rangers – Nice colors, but totally unimaginitive
13 – N.J. – Cute logo, bad colors
14 – L.A. – Those sleeves are ridiculous.
15 – Winnipeg – Sleeves aren’t as bad as the Kings’ but that crest sucks.
16 – Toronto – Like the chants you hear at a bad pro wrestling match: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooorrrrrrrring.
17 – Washington – What’s pictured here looks better than what they really wore and it’s still brutal.
18 – Quebec: What the hell is that logo supposed to be, anyway?
19 – Hartford: I honestly don’t understand how anyone could like this. Did any of you ever see these eyesores in game action? I did.
20 – Minnesota: Ugly even without the black stripe
21 – Vancouver: absolutely nauseating

1. Montreal- These uniforms are why I liked hockey as a lad.
2. Hartford- Actually probably the best.
3. Buffalo- Simple and excellent.
4. Minnesota- I don’t mind the black and barely notice it.
5. Boston- Very classic and simple.
6. St. Louis- I love the logo and the speed it implies.

8. Washington- I like the simplicity.
9. New Jersey- I really find nothing to complain about.
10. NY Rangers- I like the striping.
11. NY Islanders- Once again a strong logo helps it rank highly for me.
12. Edmonton- I prefer the whites.
13. Los Angeles-For a town and colour I hate, it’s not bad.
14. Chicago- Meh, generally overrated by people I know.
15. Quebec- I like Fleur-de-lis but they look busy here.
16. Detroit- Needs different stripe treatment for my eyes.
17. Philadelphia- I like orange a lot but not here.
18. Calgary- Probably lower than I would like to rank it.
19. Winnipeg- The sleeves look awkwardly designed.
20. Toronto- Terribly dull
21. Vancouver- Not dull enough

That Nordiques logo is very “early 70’s”. Very similar in its basic design theory to the Phillies, Expos, Brewers (ball glove MB)—even the original Canuck stick-in-rink “C”— of the same era. I’m not making a value judgement on any of them, just saying they are very much a product of their time. And, yes, their simplicity was pooh-poohed back then, too, but that simplicity was elemental to that design school. And it also explains why only a few of such style logos survived. With some exceptions, they were just too highly stylized to endure.

The pillbox helmet would not be a throwback, because the Pirates never wore them, only the pillbox hats. The gold helmet with black bill would be a throwback. That said, it would have been cool if the Pirates had worn the pillbox helmet in the 1970s with the pillbox hats (and had gold and black versions of them).

As for jerseys — hard to believe red is the alternate. Why not gold or black?

I truly wasn’t sure about that. Without looking it up, was thinking Rams left for ’47, which would have been after first year of Browns (WAS ’46, right). Pefectly willing to be wrong of course, because some things were even before my time…so memory isn’t an issue

You could say that about the LA Dons/LA Rams. One source says that the Dons initially outdrew the Rams – I guess that means in 1946 – even though the Rams were reigning NFL champions!

Whoa, another measure of how low on the totem pole the NFL was back then. 15 years later, the Rams would never have moved from Cleveland, and a team in a new league would never have outdrawn a team in the established league (see: Rams-Chargers, Cowboys-Texans, Giants-Titans).

Hate to break this to you, but the Dallas Texans did outdraw the Cowboys in 1960, according to Dave Steidel’s Remember the AFL book. Just to keep this uni-related, the Texans wore red & white as a contrast to the Cowboys then blue & white.

The addition of black to that old North Stars jersey was cancer for that team. A most inexplicable alteration. Look at how ugly that logo is with that black border. Sheesh. The shame of it all.

They may well have. I was meaning generally. Had the Texans held that position, or if they did sensed they’d hold onto it, Hunt likely wouldn’t haven’t moved to Kansas City. I just know when he moved it was to have a market of his own. Or maybe he was perceptive enough to sense that his new league had a toehold and that sooner or later a merger would force him to move anyway…so he figured he’d get on with building his own new fan base somewhere else. And, not to say Steidel is off, but the AFL wsa famous for padding its crowd counts, inspiring the famous line from the Polo Grounds about all the fans who evidently “came disguised as empty seats.”

Color-on-color for tonight’s Illinois/Missouri basketball game in St. Louis (Illinois is designated as the home team and are wearing orange. Missouri is wearing black).

Which brings me to this. If the road team in college football can get penalized for not wearing the road white jerseys (USC and most recently Southern Miss), why doesn’t the home team in college basketball get penalized for not wearing white home jerseys?????

Great scan Ricko, the USA cable ad! I won’t rank them because they’re all wonderful in their own unique way but I will say the Vancouver Vader jersey is what got me interested in hockey back in the early 1980’s. Can anyone pinpoint what year that ad would have been published? With the inclusion of Calgary, it’s no earlier than 1980 and with that Vancouver jersey, no later than 1987 I think.

I guess I just hate third-grade level logos if they happen to be for French Canadian teams, because I like all the additional examples you cited except for the Expos (although I had an Expos cap when I was about 6 and I loved it).

Hmmm, I was watching the second half of the New Orleans Bowl, not the Sunday night NFL game. Some of us genuinely prefer the college game, Paul. Being from New York, that might come as a shock, but I just thought you should know. (Some of us are Republicans, too! Oh, the horror!)

I only saw a tiny bit of this game, but it looked like the end zone (I only saw one of them) was exactly the same as it would be for a Chargers game, except that the yellow was painted over with orange. I’m talking about the one with the link.

Since the Bucs never wore helmets like that, I’d have gone old-school with the helmets by suggesting Pirate coaches wear yellow helmets with black brims.

Sincerely,
Tony in Erie
Disgruntled Pirates fan since 1980
Well said, Tony!! Here here!!!

Also, gotta say that Mike Williams is the kind of fan a team should be proud to have. The pillbox coaches helmet is one idea the Bucs should run with.

I know of at least one other Pirates front office member, besides the aforementioned Dan Hart, who is a regular reader/contributor. However, she is extremely busy right now and the rest of the office is closed.

I’m not exactly sure how much I can say, but look for new jerseys to be unveiled at some point during the winter caravan/Piratefest. From what I hear, Tony in Erie is pretty close.

The bobbleheads have been greatly trimmed down, along with all the other garbage giveaways (collectible plates, etc.). Fireworks are not going anywhere. I have never seen a town go so stupidly bat-poo crazy for fireworks, no matter the date, time, or spectacle, as they do in Pittsburgh. Other teams actually have more fireworks nights than the Pirates. The Tigers had them after every Friday and Saturday night game last year.

I’m going to assume, that by the “buy better players” comment, he really meant “draft and develop better players” since that’s the only realistic option.

Geeman,
I don’t think any of us referenced it as a throwback. Just a cool idea.

Why not gold or black?

Shows much attention is paid to the link since Bonds left town.
Tony: But the connection is to the Twins coaches’ helmets, as Paul described above, and the coaches were wearing throwbacks from the 1970s. It is a cool helmet, though.

As for the black jersey — I have seen that in years past, but not lately. The only alternate I’ve seen lately is the red one.

— Geeman

Gold would be nice, though (as it would for the A’s too).

Beats purple over black, which they have worn also in recent years.

Last night’s uniforms reminded me of Northwestern of ’95-’96 (Rose Bowl team).

This goes back to the tradition in basketball to wear gold or silver at home. Orange (and even red) has morphed into that nether area of not quite home and not quite road jersey.

Am I the only one posting today? I guess shopping and church are more important on Christmas Eve than going over uniform details.

Happy Holiday everyone.
