A few weeks ago, during my interview with Andy Hyman, there was a brief discussion of those old Sunoco NFL stamp albums from 1972, and I mentioned how I wished I’d kept mine. That wistful sentiment apparently struck a chord with reader George Fetkovich, who sent me a package that arrived on Monday. Inside was the album shown above (here’s a larger view), complete with the wrapararound cover illo and all of the stamps in place (some of them reinforced with endearingly yellowed tape).
“Your mention of the Sunoco stamp books motivated me to do battle with the myriad boxes of collectibles in my basement, where I found not one but two of the aforementioned treasures,” wrote George, who works as the art director for a Pennsylvania-based design firm. “’Tis better to share these homages to our youth than to let them gather dust, I say, so here it is. I was reluctant to peel off the label with my name, for fear it would do some serious damage to the front cover, but feel free to make it your own by trying yourself (or by covering it with one of your own, etc.).”
Actually, I’m glad George left the label on, and there’s no way I’d remove it — it’s part of the album’s story, part of its character. Same goes for the last page, where George filled in most of the NFL playoff grid that the Sunoco folks helpfully provided (although he left the Super Bowl entry blank, because he was so depressed after his beloved Steelers had lost in the conference championship round).
As I explained to George when I called to thank him, this is just the latest of many, many generous gifts that Uni Watch readers have given me. I’ll attempt to repay that generosity, or at least some of it, with a special holiday raffle later this week. Details in a day or two.

I was just thinking about my long lost NFL ’72 stamp album a few months ago. Last month we walked into a thrift store and there was a copy right in front of me. It was in rough shape but I grabbed it up. It does not have all of the stamps like mine did. Brought back lots of memories. One thing that strikes me about the pics are how many guys are out there without chin straps on!

The new Miss. St. helmet is OK, but I think it’s a downgrade. The new design pretty much eliminates the “State” ribbon detail that was on the old design. It looks a little sloppy now.

Oh, man- I was just thinking about my NFL Action ’72 stamp book the other day, and wondering if it was still in a box in my mom’s basement. Me and my friends collected those stamps fervently back then, when I was 12, but only a couple of us managed to complete the set. Assembling this album was the first time I had ever seen a glue stick, which is what we all used to attach the stamps to the page…

State is one of the few SEC schools that can’t seem to settle on a helmet design. They change the color and the logo every 4 or 5 years it seems. The only other schools in the conference that change the helmet on a regular basis: Vandy and Kentucky. It’s probably no small coincidence that they are probably the 3 crappiest long-term football programs in the SEC.
Bama – never changes
Arky – never changes (slight tweaks to Hog, however)
Auburn – never changes
Georgia – never changes (they briefly changed the stripe, but that was it)
LSU – never changes
Ole Miss – logo never changes, but they have changed the shade of blue a couple times
Florida – never changes
Tenn – never changes
S. Car. – logo never changes, but they have used a black helmet instead of white.

Yeah, that’s why the goalies’ gear was literally the best thing about that game. Well, that and the link.
I honestly think the fans wanted to see double digits. After the ninth goal, there was a great shot of some Oilers fans giving a standing ovation. And there were some truly bizarre goals in the third period.

What a blast from the past!
I actually have two versions of the Sunoco sticker book.
One was a “deluxe” edition that contained a page filled with team history, the other, a condensed version.
My father was a weekend mechanic at the local Sunoco in New Rochelle, NY when I was a kid and literally brought home bags filled with sticker books and albums. We made 4 albums, giving away two to my cousins.
NOTE: I’m not sure by looking at the photo if George pasted the entire sticker to the page. I remember that when applying the sticker, I think you were supposed to only glue the very top allowing the viewer to see stats underneath.
Either way… Great find!
I’m gonna have to take a trip to my parents and dig up the albums over the holiday.

I was flipping through Our Dumb World (The Onion’s world atlas) last night and came across something that seemed appropriate given yesterday’s main topic. The book has a page on each country, with Onion-style “facts” about each one. As you might expect, the page on Kenya had a lot of marathon references. The gem was in the “history” section:
“AD 1823: In one of the earliest known endorsement deals, American shoe company Nike offers 30,000 Kenyan slaves their freedom in exchange for wearing exclusively Nike-brand products. The slaves preserve their remaining shreds of human dignity by declining.”
I never realized Paul wrote for The Onion!
I open the site today and there is an instant, warm wave of recognition. The stamp book! I was 12 in ’72 and remember making multiple bike rides (Schwinn Typhoon) to the one gas station in my little town that offered the stamps.
Just look at those glorious depictions of the uniforms and logos on the cover…the same painterly aesthetic that was found on the posters offered through SI at the time. Gorgeous.
And, yes, the label maker name tag G. Fetkovich deemed important as a kid makes this artifact even more endearing and valued.

This video could be the future of football. It shows how using sensors in the football and receivers gloves can track where a ball is on the field and could accurately track if someone gets a first down and such. I have a feeling the sensors on the gloves shown would have to shrink considerably before we see this on the field.

Anthony is correct in that there were two versions of the stamp book as he described. I still have the deluxe edition where I did indeed place the stamps above the player information, revealing their college, position, etc. It was only after completing the edition I sent to Paul that I realized it would be cool to still see that info, and so I began the journey to complete a second!

’71 was the year Cowboys sorta had a rotating QB with Morton and Staubach, right? Or was it the year before that Morton started, when the Colts beat them in SB V? Don’t recall exactly.

The other thing to remember from that Bobcats’ photo is that maybe some people were out in the concourse buying snacks, beer, etc.
I’ve always been of the opinion that the best time is during a lull in the action. And, what is a bigger lull than when a Bobcats game is being played?

Ricko, ’71 was the season where Landry could not make up his mind re: Morton or Staubach. His indecision reached its zenith in a game at Soldier Field, where he had them alternate plays. A bad Bears team beat ’em, dropping them to 3-4.
Thereafter, he went to Staubauch full-time and they didn’t lose again that season.
(including a positively surreal Labatt’s commercial)

Reuschel, my favorite player as a kid, was large but pretty agile. As a good hitting pitcher, it probably isn’t too surprising he occasionally pinch hit. What is more surprising to non-fans of that era is that he pinch ran (he was big but of at least average speed and was very smart on the bases).

You had to know it was coming. When I saw the link, I was excited to see a new team in Mets colors…but worried I’d see too much black. And sure as shit, not only is there black, there is wayyy too much. The sad part is, it’s almost exactly what I’d expect. Only surprise- the blue doesn’t look right to me. It should be darker. It looks more like a OKC Thunder developmental team, than a Mets affiliate.
My hopes for a trend back to blue and orange….get pushed to next year, I suppose.

YES! He could run surprisingly well for a big dude.
Another thing that I liked about him as a kid was his unorthodox delivery — no leg kick whatsoever, just a slide step whether there were runners on base or not.

The GB House took FOREVER!
I cut all of the forms out of heavy gauge cardboard and then my wife made all of the icing.
The kids lasted through about two and a half trees worth of decorating.
all the while I was running up and down the stairs trying to catch as much as possible of TGGEP cuz the kids wanted to watch the new Willy Wonka.

Yeah, the Pelicans jersey was pretty cool, but they always have a different area throwback jersey every year. Before the Pelicans against the 80’s Astros was the St. Pete Saints against the Brooklyn Dodgers and before that was the Tampa Tarpons playing the 70’s Atlanta Braves. If they hold to tradition and do throwbacks again on a Saturday against a National League team, look for them to do it against the Nationals or the Marlins. My bet would be an old Washington Senators game.

When I lived in SW Virginia over the last year (2hrs from Charlotte), I played quite a bit of rec basketball. I can’t even begin to tell you what a joke the Charlotte basketball team is to that region. When you couple that, with absolutely obsessed ACC basketball fans…. you get zero excitement over a poor NBA product. That team would have to win 50 games to garner any attention at all. People just do not care. They’ve become a punch line for basketball jokes (usually during a pickup game blowout… “What are we, the damn Bobcats!??”), more than a topic of discussion.

When I switched to an all New Balance line up of shoes (running…indoor & road/trail.., hiking, basketball), it made an absolute world of difference. It started with the running shoes a few years back. It then made an amazing difference when I switched to one of the top NB basketball shoes. The indoor court was a very hard surface, and it was like night and day when I switched from Nike Dunks to NB 905’s. Not just for shin splints, but for joint pain in general. The hiking shoes were a bonus…they felt great, and were built extremely well. Depending on if your running on a track, indoor or outdoor, or on a trail or road… you can find a NB shoe that gives you the support and cushioning that you want. Hope this helps.

If you want a running shoe, I won’t say it’s “the one for everybody, hands down, best thing since sliced bread,” but I have a special affinity for Asics Gel-Kayanos. They work for me. If they work for you, great; if not, too bad you’re not me.
And at risk of becoming Mr. Anti-Powers, it took me two ingrown toenails for me to realize my feet don’t get along with Nike. I have infinite respect for their line of Dri-Fit apparel, but I won’t touch a pair of Nike shoes with a ten-foot pole. Not even if it’s my size 12 on sale.

Believe me, I come across as a Nike stooge, but when it comes to my physical well-being, and in this case, my suggestions affecting the physical well-being of others, function ALWAYS trumps form.
I love the look of Nike shoes and the marketing power behind the machine, however there are shoes and brands that put out superior products…for me.
As I mentioned before, New Balance, and Asics are at the top of my list, followed by Nike, Saucony, Brooks, and Adidas, which are great for wide feet, as are NB.
As for fashion, nothing trumps a cool pair of vintage Air Max, ACG, or Vandals.

Those shoes are over 20 years old, as is the technology.
I don’t like wearing them for casual walking let alone hardcore hoops.
I am not at the point in life for going exclusively New Balance, but in the shoe world, they are the industry standard.
Another great company is Asics. I LOVE the Gel Trail Attack line as well as the GT-2130.

The Bowerman line of Nikes are excellent as well. They are less flashy than the Air Max line, but WAY more functional.

Yeah, the dunks were a bit too high for me as well…and for some reason, they didn’t do the trick on the surface I was playing on. The indoor courts were harder than hardwood (essentially concrete with an almost rubberized paint layer, then waxed), and I’m guessing that’s where the problem comes in. I was surprised at how much of an upgrade the NB shoes were (on my ankles, knees and shins), on that surface. Especially considering the price of a pair of h-dunks.

The two best pairs of running shoes I’ve had have been Asics Gels… they’re flat out better shoes.
Not knocking Nike, but I got to the point where I played basketball in my Asics instead of my Nike Shox court shoes I had.

For you nike sneakerheads… must be excited about the new low-top “Kobes” coming out. When the best player in the NBA says he’s going to play in lows, I can imagine there will be a major ripple-down effect throughout the NBA.
I actually love them. And that says something (As you know, I don’t love much of what Nike does).

Hyperdunks are at a relatively reasonable pricepoint for Nike’s flagship shoes at 110 USD.
The Kobes don’t do it for me.
For hoops, Boot Camp at the gym,softball, and football, either playing or reffing, I will never stray from Nike.
For running, I love the Asics,
However I usually wear the Nike Air Zoom Hayward to run at the gym or outdoors.

OK, so what’s the big hubbub now with the low-tops? I’ve never paid much attention to shoes, but I do remember Mike Jordan wearing some that seemed pretty low-topped to me.
I find it ironic, and fitting, that the stamp book contained the season of Miami’s perfection. Certainly looks strange to see 14-0 penciled in on the standings. No wonder he was so distraught when Pittsburgh lost.

You know what I thought was odd? The one Adidas logo in that picture. It’s as if everything in that picture said, “Nike!” “Kobe!” or “Nike Kobe!” And yet, the one Adidas logo, albeit on a Kobe jersey. If I were in that position, I might have taped over the Adidas logo so that there wouldn’t be a lone non-Nike logo.

That logo isn’t bad, but I feel they played it just a bit too safe. It’s a cool name, but they could have done more with the logo. I absolutely LOVE the fun, original names and logos to be found in the minors.

Yeah, we could get a foot plus on both Friday and Sunday… I’m about an hour north of East Rutherford, where the Giants play, but they are still forecasting some serious winter weather both days down there. Maybe not quite as much, but it could be VERY interesting…and quite a bit of fun for a HUGE game on a national TV broadcast.
And you’re right… Packers-Bears in December should always be in crazy winter weather!

I’m still used to using the “USD”, from my time living in the Caribbean. Still seems normal to me! It was “USD” or “EC” (Eastern Caribbean Dollar) for a few years for me.

I played almost all my childhood hockey for Port Credit, and grew up a minutes walk from the arena. I’m gonna try and win that contest.
The Red Sox hat worn in that robbery picture: I actually owned that very same hat years ago. I think I bought one in 2001. It was a mesh, batting practice-style hat. It was introduced long before the primary Hanging Sox logo.
