The Los Angeles Public Library has a really good photo archive focusing on the history of L.A. and Southern California. Many of those photos are now available on the web (to access them, go here and choose “Photo Collection” from the left rail). Of course, weeding out all the uni-notable photos from such a large collection would take a long time. Fortunately, reader Zac Neubauer has already done a lot of the work for us. Here are some of the pics he’s found, plus a few more that I added into the mix:

• This is USC baseball coach Sam Crawford, circa 1935. Never seen that logo before — did they drop the “U” so the logo would match Crawford’s initials?

• Penguins on a baseball uniform! According to the caption: “Film stars Dale Evans and Roy Rogers work out with members of the Chilly Willy team of the Sherman Oaks Little League in preparation for NBC’s coast-to-coast ‘Salute to Baseball’ telecast, 1956.”

• Not sure why an L.A. photo collection would include a shot of Satchell Paige in an Astros uniform, but whatever — great find. I assume the “A” is just folded under a flap of fabric.

• Love this fire department football team, circa 1930. Did Riddell make those helmets?

• Check out this awesome helmet cart photo. Caption: “The one and only Pom-Pom Mom, Phyllis Wanger, salutes the crowd, August 8, 1978.” Hmmm, Wagner sounds like someone we need to learn more about, but a bit of preliminary googling has revealed nothing. Anyone..?

• Dig those Chargers T-shirts! That’s Jim Sears, Howie Ferguson, and Ron Waller, plus a fourth player who appears to have been literally painted out of the photo.

• The archive features lots of shots of Jackie Robinson, beginning with this photo, which shows him suited up for his high school baseball team (again, they’ve painted on fellow out of the frame). Other images show him punting and running for UCLA (note the excellent bear sleeve patch and all the seams and panels along the shoulders — similar to today’s modern tailoring), plus there’s a shot of him on the UCLA hoops squad.

• Everyone knows Sid Gillman always wore a bow tie — it’s even on his Hall of Fame bust. So I was surprised to see several shots of Gillman in an open collar (here’s another; the other guy is George Allen, who appears to be wearing turf shoes!) or even — brace yourself — a conventional necktie (that’s Gillman at upper-right).

• Never seen this before: Magic in a Raiders tee!

• I have a feeling many of you knew this already, but it was news to me that Reggie Miller wore a T-shirt under his jersey at UCLA.

• Gorgeous bowling shirts here and here.

• Cool photo here of Larry Dierker. Caption: “Larry Dierker, former Taft High pitching ace who was signed and went directly to major league baseball with the Houston Astros, exhibits his form for some of the West Valley Little League ball players at Franklin Field in Encino, 1965.”

• Ever wonder what the Dodgers’ uniforms would look like if they were sponsored by 7-Up? Me neither, but here it is anyway, circa 1959.

• Look at at the bizarre collar/placket design for the kids on the left. Never seen that before.

• ANd hey, it turns out the trend toward long baseball pants started a lot earlier than we thought.

Uni Watch News Ticker: NBA teams playing on Xmas Day will be wearing a snowflake patch. Here’s a closer look. ”¦ Major news buried within this article on the NFL staff layoffs. Key passage: “According to one league source, there have even been discussions by some owners about the possibility of putting corporate logos on uniform jerseys, à la NASCAR and European soccer. That isn’t expected to happen anytime soon because many of the league’s longtime owners, like the Bills’ Ralph Wilson and the Steelers’ Dan Rooney, would never agree to it. But it’s a good possibility down the road” (with thanks to Jon Cannella). ”¦ Meanwhile, the death of capitalism is also forcing many minor league baseball teams to cut back on uniforms. The pertinent bits begin with the third graf of this story (with thanks to Stan Olechowski). ”¦ No Mas prexy Chris Isenberg has a good interview here with playwright Itamar Moses, who wrote the baseball production Back Back Back. ”¦ Here’s Hank Aaron in a different kind of uniform (with thanks to Frank Hanney). ”¦ Check this out: sleeves vs. sleeves! That’s Abilene Christian in white, hosting Arkansas State, circa 1968 (great find by Tim Perkins). ”¦ David Sonny attended Reds Fest the other day and snapped a shot of this team suitcase. ”¦ The Caps had to dress an emergency goalie on Friday, which led to an unusual mask appearing on the ice. Details here (with thanks to Damon Hirschensohn). ”¦ Wow, the new Asian Football Confederation Champions League logo is pretty damn cool (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm, who also reports that the 2009 BJ League all-star uniforms are not cool at all — ugh). ”¦ Color-on-color alert: Xavier vs. Cincy on Saturday night. ”¦ Dolce & Gabbana have designed the latest edition of the maglia rosa, awarded to the General Classification leader at the Giro d’Italia (with thanks to Nolan Brett). ”¦ Great find by Jay Braiman, who came up with two exmaples of the Jets wearing their 1978 helmets with their 1977 jerseys during the ’78 preseason. ”¦ Several Maryland players wore Under Armour sneakers on Friday night (with thanks to Jose Frontanes). ”¦ FC Barcelona has added a new logo to their uniform. Details here, and you can see the logo in action here (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Brinke Guthrie sent along scans of three drawings he did back around 1974, when he was 14 years old, and these cool medallions, which he says date back to 1971, plus he came across a trove of old pocket schedules, which he’s uploaded here. ”¦ More on the Colts/Giants 1958 title game, including some tremendous illustrations, here (with thanks to JC Helf). ”¦ Aussie rules football note from Drew Douglas who reports that the North Melbourne Kangaroos has a new clash strip, whatever that is. ”¦ Get this: The RPI hockey roster features the Angers-Goulet brothers, Alex and Matt, both of whose NOBs are visible in this photo (with thanks to, appropriately enough, Aaron Kaufman-Moore). ”¦ Erich vonNida is a St. Louis police officer who says he needed a relaxing hobby and decided to take up painting. He’s been focusing on sports logos. “I know they are far from the best, but I have been inspired by some of the recent DIYers on your site,” writes Erich (whose surname would make for an interesting NOB). … Color-on-color hockey alert: Bowling Green vs. Notre Dame (with thanks to Brian Wysocki). ”¦ First Brandi Chastain, now this: Roma soccer player Mirko Vucinic celebrates a game-winning goal by removing his jersey and shorts and running around in his underwear. And yet soccer somehow fails to catch on in America (with thanks to David Fabrizi).

Thanks for featuring me in the Ticker Paul! And yes, vonNida does make a great NOB, depending on the capitalization.

Figure this one out, I’m up all night typing away at a research paper and then realize that Uni Watch is on eastern time so I check it and open the RPI picture and the kid in the middle, Brutlag, was a high school teammate of mine. Small world eh?

On the picture of Satchel Paige – what’s the hat he’s wearing? That’s not an Astros hat they ever wore on the field, is it?

This snowflake patch is a blasephemy, it is another example of the secular humanists war on Christmas, I for one will not stand idly by and allow this abomination to trample the hallowed traditions of the Christmas Holiday season and pro basketball, the one sport truly invented in America.

Not always. I don’t think Gillman wore his bow ties in Houston at the end of his career. I’ve got the 1974 NFL season highlight film on DVD (as part of the NFL’s Super Bowl Highlights DVD set) and Gillman wore a ratty nylon jacket with no tie at least in the season finale in the Astrodome.

A clash jersey [/guernsey] is worn in Aussie rules when two teams jerseys clash (ie, colours are the same).

So, say a green team plays a red team, both would wear their home jerseys.

But say a blue and white striped team (such as the Kangas – link), play another blue and white hoops team (such as Geelong – link), one team wears a clash jersey.

It’s quite rare that they are worn (and some older teams refuse to wear them, which is very petty), but my team Adelaide wear them quite frequently now.

Yeah, I tend to remember an older lady being a “member” of the LA Rams cheerleading squad in the late 70’s. That must have been her.

It looks like the 1980 Saints (who started 0-14…finished 1-15) may be off the hook for worst start EVER in NFL history…Lions, can you hit that 26 game losing streak….

Anyone watch the Cowboys v. Giants last night and notice the Cowboys DL, I believe it was Greg Ellis, with the different jersey from the rest of the team. Unfortunately I can’t get a screen grab(help anyone?), but the strips on the sleeves of his jersey were thin silver instead of the thick blue ones the rest of the team had. Anyone else see that?

Greg Ellis was also wearing the ubiqitous GU band on his arm. Didn’t have the wherewithall to do a screen grab… was a little too giddy over the pasting the little g men were taking.

He’s been like this for awhile–pretty sure I’ve read discussion about it here in years past. It’s still a blue stripe, but it looks like it’s just really old/faded/tattered. Jay Ratliff’s stripes were also looking pretty ratty.

    Great catch.

I’m guessing he had a tryout with the Astros? The prototype cap indicates that it was before the 1965 season. Paige was in the minors at the time, to be signed in 1965 by the A’s as one of Charley Finley’s publicity stunts.

So maybe the Astros were looking at him? Would that have made the sports pages of the LA Times? Sure possible, but I don’t know.

That emergency goalie, for those that may have missed the story, was Capitals’ web producer Brett Leonhardt.

Jose Theodore was injured in the morning skate, and GM George McPhee put a call into Hershey to bring up Simeon Varlamov. The problem?

Hershey was on a roadtrip in Houston.

Since they needed a back-up goaltender ASAP, they signed the 6’7″ Brett “Stretch” Leonhardt from their front office. Leonhardt played NCAA Division III hockey for the Neumann College Knights, and posted decent numbers.

Once Varlamov arrived in Washington, he relieved Leonhardt of his duties.

Jim – did you see a few years ago, the Canucks’ starting tender (I believe it was Cloutier) was injured during the morning practice and it was too late to get the AHL call up in time for the game later that night. So they signed a one day contract with a kid from UBC. Anyway, the back up was hurt during the game and while the trainer tended to him, the cameras went to this kid on the bench who was sitting there chewing (vigorously) on a wad of gum.

    Pretty cool story, eh?
I actually watched that game over the weekend and thought is was one of the coolest hockey stories I’ve heard in a while.
I’d bet that all NHL clubs know of a few goalies that are in the area should such an unusual situation occur. The Caps were just forward thinking enough to actually have this guy on staff.
In Calgary and Vancouver at least, they have “rent a goalie” services.

There are so few goalies out there that rec league and adult league teams often have problems finding goalies – I’ve seen games cancelled or played with the nets turned backwards because teams couldn’t field a goalie.

You call the goalie dispatcher, they send you a goalie, everyone on the team chips in and you get a proper game in. A buddy of mine in Vancouver who’s a goalie has made a decent chunk of change that way.

I can’t imagine an NHL team doing that, but if worst came to worst…

    Great catch.

I’m guessing he had a tryout with the Astros? The prototype cap indicates that it was before the 1965 season. Paige was in the minors at the time, to be signed in 1965 by the A’s as one of Charley Finley’s publicity stunts.

So maybe the Astros were looking at him? Would that have made the sports pages of the LA Times? Sure possible, but I don’t know.
I think the most interesting thing about that shot is the rare glimpse it gives you of the ceiling of the Astrodome before the plexiglass ceiling tiles were painted over – that’s sunlight coming through the roof, back when they thought that could work and allow the dome to have grass. I don’t know when they painted them, but it wasn’t long after the dome opened, and to see a picture of the ceiling with light coming through is, I would think, exceedingly rare.

Ceiling got painted almost immediately. As I recall (just memory now, so cut me a little slack) the newly re-christened Colt .45s played the Yankees in the first-ever game in Astrodome, a daytime spring training game…and nobody could follow the fly balls. I have a recollection of a game photo of Mickey Mantle and some other Yankees standing around looking up at the ceiling during a stoppage of play like “wtf”…or maybe it’s of a fly ball dropping between players, Mantle being one of them. I don’t have it, but I sure do remember something like that.

Anyway, I think the paint job started the next day. Practically. LOL.

(As far as the cap logo, you’d be surprised what PR guys would throw together for something like that, figuring they could get away with it. Not saying that’s what happened here, but such things did quite often. I remember the mockup jersey the Screaming Eagles had for the Bernie Parent press conference in Miami was white and red velour with gold satin ribbon sewn on for the striping. “No closeups, please”. LOL).

I always thought that buying naming rights to stadia was supposed to be at least a little bit of an investment in advertising. I mean, if you hear Comerica Park every time you go to a ballgame as a kid, maybe you will go to Comerica for your first bank account. Or Citi, if you like the Mets, or whatever. I don’t really get why energy companies in Minnesota and Pittsburgh are now buying the rights, when it really won’t help them reach any new customers. It’s the goddam power company!!

I’ve been thinking about this all day. Couldn’t one of the regular skaters suit up as a goalie? Why don’t they just find gear for the 7th or 8th defenseman and put him in there? Or are all players so specialized from such a young age that none of them have ever played significant time at goalie?

I have to believe that one of the elite athletes who actually play every day would be better if thrown in net than an amateur picked up off the street.

I’ve been thinking about this all day. Couldn’t one of the regular skaters suit up as a goalie? Why don’t they just find gear for the 7th or 8th defenseman and put him in there? Or are all players so specialized from such a young age that none of them have ever played significant time at goalie?

I have to believe that one of the elite athletes who actually play every day would be better if thrown in net than an amateur picked up off the street.
it also said that the guy is also a extra practice goalie

    ;-)

    Pretty cool story, eh?
No way man – I’ve played the game since I was 4 and would never go between the pipes… Goalies are a different breed!

Well, in society’s defense, it was a pagan holiday to begin with.
Thank goodness someone said it. Because baby Jesus was decorating FIR TREES in Bethlehem, right?
Many religious holidays, Christian or otherwise, have some connection to earlier pagan celebrations. Christmas orginally was celebrated under the cover of the pagan holiday so as to not attract attention, not as the holiday itself.

My point is that this country was founded on certain principles, which means that, whatever side of the discussion you come down on, the history of the holiday, beyond as it applies to the Founding Fathers in the 18th century, is irrelevant.

The issue offered earlier seemed more in regard to what degree “political correctness” should or should not be applied, rather than the distant anthropological connections of the celebration itself.

Not trying to start an argument, just saying focus on the issue, which appears to be politcal correctness.

I know years ago I was writing jingle lyrics using the word “Christmas” all over the place. Couldn’t do that now.

Not saying is right or wrong, just saying that’s the topic: the secularization of the holiday…so best to stay inside that sphere.

The photos tended to be cataloged by people who didn’t know much about sports.
As far as the L.A. Times running a profit — well, not so much. It seems like it’s parent corporation, The Tribune Company, filed for bankruptcy protection last week.

one of those mixed 78 helmet/77 jersey NY Jets photos was of Chris Ward, the man who inspired the timeless, “holding. #72. offense five yard penalty.”

i swear that was written just for him.

I’m not of any help, but how about a trial for Jenny Craig instead?

Hahaha. Oh trust me, he’ll get a Jenny Craig offer/Gym membership/some sort of exercise item….as he does every year.

Ricko SHOULD know, he sketched Ben Franklin’s wig and bi-focals. We might get a chance to see it in “Benchies”.

BTW…I don’t know what’s worse…Greg Ellis’ sleeves or the UA kicks that UM is wearing.

Anybody take a look at the available jerseys to buy? A Mike Vick Falcons jersey! A David Carr Texans jersey! A Chad Pennington Jets jersey! A Rueden Droughns Browns jersey! Its like a StraightCashHomey.com smorgasboard!

After all those jerseys, they curiously have a Favre Jets jersey?

A couple of cool things out of my alma mater, Wagner College:

    1. This year they updated their wordmark and primary logo:

    link

    2. I hadn’t noticed until the other day, that they had updated their football unis as well.

The Atlanta Hawk/Seahawk now adorns the helmet whereas last year they wore the Block W, after switching to a cursive “Wagner” for one year.

    link

    link

They also have the new stylized W on the left hip of the pants.

    3. The QB coach when I was a freshman, has been Urban Meyer’s OC and was just named Head Coach at Miss. State/

That is an AWESOME story!!! Is there some article about it? I would love to save that

Alright let me understand this…your site has approximately 10,000 words on it and your feature article has maybe 1000 words and you cant figure out how to squeeze 4 extra letter onto your site? why would you use the term xmas instead of CHRISTMAS. do you really want to exchange x for Christ? do you want to cheapen your site to a liberal rag catering to the left extreamist. c’mon i thought you were better than that Jersey. I am a tried and true Paterson reader but if you must downgrade your web site I will stop reading. Dont be afraid to use the word Christmas. It is afterall HIS holiday!!!

I have no idea where you’re coming from. And Paul’s Long Island bred, and Brooklyn based. Not exactly Jersey on either count.

    1. The “X” in “X-Mas” was originally an abbreviation of “Christ”.

    2. As has been pointed out, He “borrowed” the holiday in the first place (wasn’t even born in the winter, after all). Only fair that He be required to return it. ;)
