The Los Angeles Public Library has a really good photo archive focusing on the history of L.A. and Southern California. Many of those photos are now available on the web (to access them, go here and choose “Photo Collection” from the left rail). Of course, weeding out all the uni-notable photos from such a large collection would take a long time. Fortunately, reader Zac Neubauer has already done a lot of the work for us. Here are some of the pics he’s found, plus a few more that I added into the mix:
• This is USC baseball coach Sam Crawford, circa 1935. Never seen that logo before — did they drop the “U” so the logo would match Crawford’s initials?
• Penguins on a baseball uniform! According to the caption: “Film stars Dale Evans and Roy Rogers work out with members of the Chilly Willy team of the Sherman Oaks Little League in preparation for NBC’s coast-to-coast ‘Salute to Baseball’ telecast, 1956.”
• Not sure why an L.A. photo collection would include a shot of Satchell Paige in an Astros uniform, but whatever — great find. I assume the “A” is just folded under a flap of fabric.
• Love this fire department football team, circa 1930. Did Riddell make those helmets?
• Check out this awesome helmet cart photo. Caption: “The one and only Pom-Pom Mom, Phyllis Wanger, salutes the crowd, August 8, 1978.” Hmmm, Wagner sounds like someone we need to learn more about, but a bit of preliminary googling has revealed nothing. Anyone..?
• Dig those Chargers T-shirts! That’s Jim Sears, Howie Ferguson, and Ron Waller, plus a fourth player who appears to have been literally painted out of the photo.
• The archive features lots of shots of Jackie Robinson, beginning with this photo, which shows him suited up for his high school baseball team (again, they’ve painted on fellow out of the frame). Other images show him punting and running for UCLA (note the excellent bear sleeve patch and all the seams and panels along the shoulders — similar to today’s modern tailoring), plus there’s a shot of him on the UCLA hoops squad.
• Everyone knows Sid Gillman always wore a bow tie — it’s even on his Hall of Fame bust. So I was surprised to see several shots of Gillman in an open collar (here’s another; the other guy is George Allen, who appears to be wearing turf shoes!) or even — brace yourself — a conventional necktie (that’s Gillman at upper-right).
• Never seen this before: Magic in a Raiders tee!
• I have a feeling many of you knew this already, but it was news to me that Reggie Miller wore a T-shirt under his jersey at UCLA.
• Gorgeous bowling shirts here and here.
• Cool photo here of Larry Dierker. Caption: “Larry Dierker, former Taft High pitching ace who was signed and went directly to major league baseball with the Houston Astros, exhibits his form for some of the West Valley Little League ball players at Franklin Field in Encino, 1965.”
• Ever wonder what the Dodgers’ uniforms would look like if they were sponsored by 7-Up? Me neither, but here it is anyway, circa 1959.
• Look at at the bizarre collar/placket design for the kids on the left. Never seen that before.
• ANd hey, it turns out the trend toward long baseball pants started a lot earlier than we thought.

Not always. I don’t think Gillman wore his bow ties in Houston at the end of his career. I’ve got the 1974 NFL season highlight film on DVD (as part of the NFL’s Super Bowl Highlights DVD set) and Gillman wore a ratty nylon jacket with no tie at least in the season finale in the Astrodome.
A clash jersey [/guernsey] is worn in Aussie rules when two teams jerseys clash (ie, colours are the same).
So, say a green team plays a red team, both would wear their home jerseys.
But say a blue and white striped team (such as the Kangas – link), play another blue and white hoops team (such as Geelong – link), one team wears a clash jersey.
It’s quite rare that they are worn (and some older teams refuse to wear them, which is very petty), but my team Adelaide wear them quite frequently now.

Greg Ellis was also wearing the ubiqitous GU band on his arm. Didn’t have the wherewithall to do a screen grab… was a little too giddy over the pasting the little g men were taking.

What I love about Barcelona is that the only logos on their unis are (Nike of course, since they’re made by the dark prince) but Unicef and this new one, both charities. Bo other logos. And they give portions of their uni sales to the charities as well. sharp stuff from a classy organization!

He’s been like this for awhile–pretty sure I’ve read discussion about it here in years past. It’s still a blue stripe, but it looks like it’s just really old/faded/tattered. Jay Ratliff’s stripes were also looking pretty ratty.

Great catch.
I’m guessing he had a tryout with the Astros? The prototype cap indicates that it was before the 1965 season. Paige was in the minors at the time, to be signed in 1965 by the A’s as one of Charley Finley’s publicity stunts.
So maybe the Astros were looking at him? Would that have made the sports pages of the LA Times? Sure possible, but I don’t know.

Went to the first three home games of the year for my hometown BayHawks…in these games they played Iowa once and Fort Wayne twice.

I’d bet that all NHL clubs know of a few goalies that are in the area should such an unusual situation occur. The Caps were just forward thinking enough to actually have this guy on staff.

Jim – did you see a few years ago, the Canucks’ starting tender (I believe it was Cloutier) was injured during the morning practice and it was too late to get the AHL call up in time for the game later that night. So they signed a one day contract with a kid from UBC. Anyway, the back up was hurt during the game and while the trainer tended to him, the cameras went to this kid on the bench who was sitting there chewing (vigorously) on a wad of gum. He didn’t get to go in but he said afterward that he was crapping his pants at that very moment.
Can you imagine one morning you’re playing Canadian Collegiate hockey and then all of a sudden you are pulling on an NHL jersey? Incredible.

That does sound familar…
usually when something like this happans it’s in practice where a team needs an extra goalie in practice due to injuries, rarely do you hear about it in games… still a neat story. Hope he kept a copy of that contact… I’d frame it if it it happaned to me.

That kid was the third-string goalie for UBC. Since the top two goalies on their depth chart were ineligible for emergency call-up as per NHL rules, Chris Levesque donned #40 and looked like a kid on Christmas.

Hershey was on a roadtrip in Houston.
Since they needed a back-up goaltender ASAP, they signed the 6’7″ Brett “Stretch” Leonhardt from their front office. Leonhardt played NCAA Division III hockey for the Neumann College Knights, and posted decent numbers.
Once Varlamov arrived in Washington, he relieved Leonhardt of his duties.

I think the most interesting thing about that shot is the rare glimpse it gives you of the ceiling of the Astrodome before the plexiglass ceiling tiles were painted over – that’s sunlight coming through the roof, back when they thought that could work and allow the dome to have grass. I don’t know when they painted them, but it wasn’t long after the dome opened, and to see a picture of the ceiling with light coming through is, I would think, exceedingly rare.

Ceiling got painted almost immediately. As I recall (just memory now, so cut me a little slack) the newly re-christened Colt .45s played the Yankees in the first-ever game in Astrodome, a daytime spring training game…and nobody could follow the fly balls. I have a recollection of a game photo of Mickey Mantle and some other Yankees standing around looking up at the ceiling during a stoppage of play like “wtf”…or maybe it’s of a fly ball dropping between players, Mantle being one of them. I don’t have it, but I sure do remember something like that.
Anyway, I think the paint job started the next day. Practically. LOL.
(As far as the cap logo, you’d be surprised what PR guys would throw together for something like that, figuring they could get away with it. Not saying that’s what happened here, but such things did quite often. I remember the mockup jersey the Screaming Eagles had for the Bernie Parent press conference in Miami was white and red velour with gold satin ribbon sewn on for the striping. “No closeups, please”. LOL).

I remember hating how the Jets had a “photo negative” logo on their away jerseys. I used to have a home Jets jersey- wore it for street hockey all the time. Come to think of it, all the teams I had- Jets, Whalers, etc- ended up moving.

Don’t know if it was mentioned already, but it looks like we have a re-match for the DIII National Football Championship. The Mount Union Purple Raiders take on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks in the 2008 Stagg Bowl.

I always thought that buying naming rights to stadia was supposed to be at least a little bit of an investment in advertising. I mean, if you hear Comerica Park every time you go to a ballgame as a kid, maybe you will go to Comerica for your first bank account. Or Citi, if you like the Mets, or whatever. I don’t really get why energy companies in Minnesota and Pittsburgh are now buying the rights, when it really won’t help them reach any new customers. It’s the goddam power company!!
Anyway, we all saw how well Enron did after buying the park down in Houston….

In many municipalities, you can choose between power companies. And in others (perhaps even places where you can’t), power companies have to invest so much into public interest projects.

Tezuka died in 1989 and would have been 80 this year, and this is one of the campaigns that is going on to repromote his works. Tezuka produced Kimba the White Lion, which was adopted as the Seibu Lions’ mascot in 1978 and also Astro Boy, which was the Yakult Atoms (now Swallows) from 1966-1970.

Teebz- i know they’re here but going to the college games are much more fun. and cheaper. i used to be a huge avalanche fan but haven’t really followed them in recent years. some of my friends have turned me towards the pens. still love the the avs uni’s though.

The LAPL newspaper photos are actually for the late, lamented L.A. Herald-Examiner. The L.A. Times photo collection is owned by the L.A. Times, which despite what you might think, is still in business (and apparently turning a profit).
The photos tended to be cataloged by people who didn’t know much about sports.

I’ve been thinking about this all day. Couldn’t one of the regular skaters suit up as a goalie? Why don’t they just find gear for the 7th or 8th defenseman and put him in there? Or are all players so specialized from such a young age that none of them have ever played significant time at goalie?
I have to believe that one of the elite athletes who actually play every day would be better if thrown in net than an amateur picked up off the street.

Many religious holidays, Christian or otherwise, have some connection to earlier pagan celebrations. Christmas orginally was celebrated under the cover of the pagan holiday so as to not attract attention, not as the holiday itself.
My point is that this country was founded on certain principles, which means that, whatever side of the discussion you come down on, the history of the holiday, beyond as it applies to the Founding Fathers in the 18th century, is irrelevant.
The issue offered earlier seemed more in regard to what degree “political correctness” should or should not be applied, rather than the distant anthropological connections of the celebration itself.
Not trying to start an argument, just saying focus on the issue, which appears to be politcal correctness.
I know years ago I was writing jingle lyrics using the word “Christmas” all over the place. Couldn’t do that now.
Not saying is right or wrong, just saying that’s the topic: the secularization of the holiday…so best to stay inside that sphere.

1. The “X” in “X-Mas” was originally an abbreviation of “Christ”.
2. As has been pointed out, He “borrowed” the holiday in the first place (wasn’t even born in the winter, after all). Only fair that He be required to return it. ;)
