You Always Remember Your First…

2008 pics 279

…uniform. This is mine. Got it in, oh…1972-ish.

It’s a beauty, eh? Having been birthed a Mets fan, I got into baseball as soon as I could talk. Used to watch Mets games at my pop’s knee on the old WOR Channel 9 here on Long Island. Loved it then, love it now…despite the dearth of World Series titles (two in my life: 1969 and 1986 — the first of which I don’t even remember, although Dad was at Game 4 at Shea — you know, the game where Ron Swoboda announced himself to the world).

So, roundabout 1972, I begged and pleaded with mom and dad to pleeeeeeease get me a New York Mets uniform for Christmas. Actually, I think I begged Santa to do the dirty work (as I was still a believer then). Whenever I mentioned Santa to dad, he always chuckled, and told me the “jolly old man” would see what he could do. He also told me Santa was always jolly because he knew “where all the bad girls lived.” Apples don’t fall far from the tree.

So, I awoke one December morning to find this under the fake tree. And, what a happy young man I was. In fact, the only time I was happier is when I beat Michael J. Fox at Jenga. I couldn’t wait for spring so I could parade my new duds on the field … and wear that beauty to Shea.

I can’t remember the day or the date of my first 1973 game, but I do know it was warm enough to wear the uniform. I arrived early with my dad, but not early enough to catch BP or get autographs. No matter, I was at Shea, in my gear, and I was in heaven — until about the 7th inning.

You see, there was this black-haired kid, probably about two years older than me, a couple of rows away. He was wearing a “McGovern 72” T-shirt,  sweatpants, and  had a lefty glove. And he took one look at me and pointed out that there were, um, certain inconsistencies in my uniform. My jersey AND the pants both contained piping. And, of course, neither the 1972 nor the 1973 Mets uniforms had this feature (on the homes). I was also not properly stirruped. *Sigh* Also, at the time, the uniform was lacking the left shoulder patch.

So I set about to remedy the uniform sitch as best as possible. I found a patch in a catalog, which I made mom sew on. I located a pair of stirrups in a sporting goods store (yes, they’re not proper royal Mets blue, but they were as close as I could find). And I begged mom to take the piping off the uniform, but she refused, explaining that would render the uniform more worthless than reichmarks at the end of World War II. So, I made do the best I could.

I’ll always remember that first uniform (and I thank god mom saw fit so somehow keep it all these years … who knew it’d come in so handy for a UW column?). Of course, I still love my Mets gear, even own a couple jerseys and a boatload of T-shirts. But you already knew that.

So what about you guys? You got a “first uniform”? Love to hear about it.

And if I ever run into that kid from Shea, I don’t know whether to punch him in the mouth, or thank him for continuing my uniform obsession.

The rose goes in the front, big guy. — Phil Hecken

Welcome aboard, Phil. Alas, no first uniform story for me. I was more of a cap kid.

NESN’s Sportsdesk anchor this morning on Florida State’s black uniforms: “They wear black once a year for charity. But really it’s for Nike.”

I tried and tried to think what was my first jersey. I can’t come up with it. What I can remember is my mother being mad about the price o’ jerseys, bitching at me that this piece of crap isn’t worth half of what their charging. I can vividly remember mother asking me-where’d you get that? how much???? wasn’t it on sale?????????? blah blah blah.

The canned response evolved into: Uh, I got it at a thrift store mom.

Nice with the early morning post!

link was the first uni picture I could find, I can thank my father for getting me started on my obsession. I know mine looks nothing like the real thing but just the fact that my dad put me in one of those makes me happy. Apparently I went to my first game when I was not even a year old yet.

Loving the movie quotes, glad to have your posts on the weekends.

My first, a maroon link sweater in ’96, their first season in Denver. I was a big Patrick Roy fan as a kid. I think I was in third grade, but either way over the next couple of months I saw a white Avs sweater appear on the school bus, or a maroon one walking down the halls, or a black Avs tee in the lunch room. These weren’t even hockey kids. I’m happy to say that I, single handedly, started the Avs craze of ’96 at Elmhurst Elementary in Portsmouth, RI. How’s that for marketing? Just give your products out to third graders. Their friends are very impressionable.

I am sad to say that I followed that selection up with one particularly disgusting link sweater. I don’t even have the excuse that it was my first….

Phil, I don’t think you have to look too far to find your friend from “Shea”.

From your description, I was able to work up a composite photo of what he would look like today.

Surprisingly, he looks alot like this:

    link

And I have to congratulate you again…2 for 2. Great work, friend…and I sincerely hope you and the “jolly old man” can enjoy a good old-fashioned football game between the Giants and Ravens today!

Neat entry. My first uniform was in the middle ’60s and were my borrowed Little League togs. Ours were heavy grey wool with puckered royal piping and a big satin sans serif H on the chest. All the stirrups were heavy, but I remember the best players taking the solid blue ones; the scrubs were left with the stirrups that sported Northwestern stripes. I loved ’em. Still have a longing for stripped stirrups. Guess that’s why I check in here.

Like Scott, I was more of a cap kid, too. I probably first started with the Cleveland Indians (my grandparents lived and still do live in Akron, Ohio, and were/are big Tribe fans. I’ve got pictures of my brother and me from the early 80s wearing the Cleveland cap with link.

I switched my loyalties to Chicago teams (since that’s where I grew up) with the ’84 Cubs winning the division title, but I didn’t get into sports clothing until the next year with the Bears winning the Super Bowl. I remember having this replica William Perry jersey (the one you got at Montgomery Ward that had the “Bears” nameplate across the front).

I also had a small cap collection going by then. link, White Sox (both link and link version), newer link, and link (my first little league team was the Royals.

Now I’m trying to collect the caps of the home team of the stadiums I visit. I have the Cubs, link and Royals under my belt, but I’m trying to decide whether to get the link or link Brewers hat the next time I go to Miller Park (45 minutes from my hometown where my parents still live). I may get both because they wear both and I do like that retro cap.

A Cowboys #44 Robert Newhouse jersey circa 1976. Sadly no pic if I remember right my mother threw it away.

A white St. Louis Blues sweatshirt in 1967/68 that I immediately Magic-Markered with a #1 (no names on the sweaters in those days, though…) That sweatshirt saw me through many a street/roller/ice hockey game in my youth!

    God Bless link!

I was a collector of batting helmets when I was a kid and didn’t have a proper SF Giants jersey until I got one handed down from my brother when I was about 20.

I still have the classic orange batting helmet from helmet day at the Astrodome in ’78 while on a family vacation. The giveaway sponsor’s logo (Pilgrim Dry Cleaning, I think) lasted about 2 days before it got scraped off. Wore that damn to school on several occasions.

And Phil, 2 Championships in your lifetime does not qualify as a “dearth” :^J

A 1987 link home jersey. Yep, on a team with Mike Schmidt, Juan Samuel, Dutch Daulton and Milt Thompson, my favorite player was Von Hayes. I’ve still got boxes of Von Hayes baseball cards, and for some reason, I’ll still defend him as one of the greatest Phillies ever even though I know it’s not true at all.

My first uniform was a Michigan home jersey, #37. This was in 1996, I was in high school, and the player was Jarret Irons. He was a Linebacker who graduated before they won the national championship. Oh, it was also the one of the first years that nike made michigan’s jerseys so it had the mandatory swoosh, which is probably why i don’t mind some logo creep.

Two quick stories. First uniform wasn’t really a uniform. I had a pair of Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers Pyjamas. They were a mistake pair as they were actually designed with Houston Oilers colours….ironically enough I followed Warren Moon as an Oiler and loved them too. So my first uniform wasn’t really a uniform but pyjamas.

BUt my first real pride and joy was a Mc Donalds issued Toronto Blue Jays Cap circa 1983-84. After that point I always owned a blue Jays cap until they orginally got rid of their only good logo. I just cannot bring myself to wear the new stuff with black and all, although I would love to see a hybrid of the new jay with the old logo…..bring back the maple leaf!

Phil, you are my new favorite intern.

My first jersey was a Mets top which my mom sewed a 25th Anniversary patch on so that I could look as much like Lenny Dykstra as a ten year old, right handed kid could while playing baseball (with a tennis ball to save the windows) in the backyard. Plastic batting cap and all.

By the way, you might want to ask Paul where he was on the game day in question. The chances of a kid publicly pointing out the flaws in another fans replica uniform and NOT starting a blog about such things are very slim.

my first was a marlins home jersey in 96…teal pinstriping, teal wordmark. i also had the black-brimmed road hat (i didn’t know it was the road cap, the fish weren’t on tv that often)

a couple of other things: did florida’s pants have their striping a little farther back than usual last night?

and rehashing a discussion from friday (the “orioles’ baseball” patch) the rangers old diamond shaped logo had the “texas rangers baseball club” wordmark around it if i’m not mistaken

I really wich Oregon would put “DUCKS” on their bumper rather than “O”. Also wish they would have kept the OREGON on the pant leg.

Having been conceived in Brooklyn shortly after the ’69 WS, I can relate, BTW – blue and black Mets caps in my menagerie currently.

My first jersey was a Phil Simms #11 Giants home jersey replica for Christmas 1981 (when, if you reasonably do the math, I *was* 11) that I was already outgrowing – maybe my nephew got it or something.

My current fave is a Wayne Chrebet #80 home Jets jersey that a *special friend* acquired for me a couple of years ago. I really don’t get to wear it enough.

It was the early 90’s in central Wisconsin, and I was around 11-12 years old when I wanted my first jersey. The only only sports I watched regularly was the Packers, and a lot of Bulls basketball. We didn’t have cable until the late 90’s, and My mom’s entire side of the family is from Chicago, so whenever we would visit I would watch the Bulls. My dad would not let me get a jersey at first because he said,
“Do any of those pro athletes wear a “Johnny O” jersey? Or do any of those athletes pay you to wear their jersey, or thank you for wearing their jersey? No way in hell they do, they go so much money they don’t know what to do with it.”

But finally, in early ’96 my mom took me to a sports store and I got my first jersey…it was a black alt. Dennis Rodman #91 Bulls jersey! Talk about a great first! Of course, I was gonna do the Jordan jersey, but I thought, “Everyone has that!”, so I wanted to be different… and different I was. Of course ’96 was the year the Bulls dominated the NBA, and I got to wear that jersey a lot. Alas, Rodman left the team, and I felt like a fool if I wore it again. So I got a replica, home, Cleveland Indians #7 Kenny Lofton uni. (I loved the Tribe and the Crew my whole life). But then Lofton got traded, and I vowed then and there to never buy a NOB jersey again! And the only uni I have purchased since my first 2 in ’96 is my ’07 Brewers Retro Friday uni, with Silver Anniversary patch, of course sans NOB.

    My only jersey I own:
    link

Around the time you received your Mets beauty, I was given my first: a replica North Stars green jersey. I have no pics and it is long gone, but I remember it as being very accurate and really cool.

After the Colts left, kids in my neighborhood split their allegiances. I was a Bronco fan (mainly because they were always the late game of the double-header and John Elway stood up to Irsay). My first Broncos jersey (bought through the Sears catalogue) was an orange Karl Mecklenberg. Loved that jersey and wore it until the numbers wore off.

Two world series titles in your lifetime is a “dearth”?

Be careful that you never say that here on the north side of Chicago. Such an offense is punishable by stoning to death….

I must have been 8 years old. The first jersey I remember owning was of the local minor league hockey team, the New Orleans Brass of the ECHL. My dad got it for me in anticipation of opening night, and I wore it to every game I attended (trust me, I went often) over the five years of existence. (It’s a wonder I didn’t outgrow it in that time!) I remember being proud of the fact that though they had a total uniform overhaul after two or three years, I had an example of the original sweater.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s there wasn’t much widespread sports merchandising, except for the Sears cataloge stuff Paul occasionally writes about. I may have had some non-descript Falcons jersey as a kid, but it wasn’t too authentic, so it wasn’t treasured.

At around 14 (1973) I saw a magazine ad where an authentic, personalized NFL jeresy could be ordered, and I jumped on it…a red home Falcons jersey with my name and number.

Now as a dad, I’ve made sure my sons were never lacking for baseball, football, hockey, and basketball jerseys, both replicas and authentics.

FYI – in the late 60’s my little brother had a Braves uni quite similar to the Mets uni in the story. At a picture day, player Joe Torre picked him up and a memorable photo was snapped.

Nice start to the solo career Phil.

Mmmmm…my first jersey was actually a Yankee uniform much like your Mets one Phil. I don’t know why my parents decided to dress up their Met fan sons in Yankee gear but since we had very little say in the matter, we wore what Mom gave us.

Once Mom wised up to the facts of life she bought me a Mets cap and this was the cap that I got Roger McDowell’s autograph on during BP one great afternoon at Shea. I wore that damn thing for years until link decided that she liked it better than the Alpo we put out for her.

I was pretty upset when I found the little pieces of green underbill all over the place.

I’ve had a few other interesting jersey’s throughout the years (some of which I still have), but I don’t have pics. I’ll get them in the coming week and either post or send them to Phil.

Johnny O., I LOVE that Brewers jersey. Their Friday home alts are my favorite in baseball!

Frank from B-More, as a kid from the NYC suburbs, I was a rare animal liking Elways’ Broncos but moreso Dave Kriegs’ Seahawks, mainly for the same reasons as you.

When I was very young, the Seahawks and Broncos were very often the late afternoon NBC AFC televised teams. Bob Trumpy and Don Criqui(Sp?) or Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen were always the anouning teams.

At the time, my uncle lived in Seattle. My favorite player was John L. Williams, the teams outstanding fullback. My uncle would always promise me that he would sent me one of their jerseys. Much to the dismay of a young kid, those jerseys never materialized!

To this day, I have only owned one authentic jersey, a 1995 Home Yankees jersey with Mike Stanley’s #20 on the back. It is one of the older ones, made by Russell Athletic. It was one of my high school graduation presents.

However, I would love to find anything Rams era Eric Dickerson related, not a jersey though.
I love the T-shirt jerseys that companies like Nike make!

Did you remove a neck tag? Looks like you did. If so, then kudos for taking a retail authentic and adding a small degree of extra “team-issued only” authenticity. Just saying.

My first jersey was bought for me by my dad even before I was born. He is a huge Cowboys fan and got me a #33 Tony Dorsett jersey. It didn’t fit me until I was 10, but that’s okay. Still have it in a box somewhere.

The first jersey’s I remember picking out where hockey jersey’s when I was probably 8-9 years old. A Colorado Rockies, Minnesota North Stars, Philly Flyers, Team Canada, NJ Devils, Edmonton Oilers. They are all classics and good memories when I look back on them.
My first was a Drew Bledsoe Pats jersey, when I was about 8 or 9. I look back now and wonder why the Pats ever thought link was a good idea.
I had the same bledsoe but mine was reversible and the other side was a black and red heavy version. I told all my friends that this was going to be the next years third jersey. i was dumb. this was before ditch the black was a common philosophy and it was still edgy. wow 96 97 was a simpler time

As probably no surprise to anyone here, my interest in sports uniforms began with sneakers and cleats but soon manifested itself with football helmets and caps.

I began playing Pop Warner when I was 7. It wasn’t until about two years later, that I can really remember watching football on television.

The Penn State/Miami Orange Bowl starring Vinny Testaverde and Pete Giftopoulos was the first college game I can remember watching.

The Bears win in the 1985 Super Bowl was one I remember watching, probably because of the Fridge but the Giants season of 1986 was the first one that I can really remember vivid details of.

The only NFL game that I have ever attended was that year. I had a 1PM Pop Warner game that I played against the Orangetown Patriots at Pearl River High School and my father and I went directly from the game to Giants Stadium to see Big Blue play the Eagles.

The Giants won 35-3 and I remember two plays as if they happened yesterday. On one Giants PAT, Harry Carson scored on a bungles snap and at some point, Joe Morris’ jersey had ripped. I became fixated on that, thinking that I would find the torn jersey in a random garbage can on my way out of the stadium.

I can also remember, from that season, a play in which Morris lost one of his turfs but continued on for a huge gain. A picture of the play was even included in the teams’ yearbook, which I had held onto for years until it disintegrated.

Did I also mention that I went to the game in my own gear from the days’ game?

To this day, I notice every sports, uniform, sneaker related item wherever I am.
My friends and family think I am a savant, maybe an idiot too, for my habits of locating uni-related stuff.

I could be in the middle of Disney, or NYC and notice a cool jersey, or a great pair of sneakers and I’ll simply compliment the person or ask them about the item and a great conversation will usually start.

I guess it’s a from of People-Watching! That is why I love UW. I started out scanning baseball and football cards, reading SI from cover to cover the Friday afternoons that I received them. Even my annual summer vacation purchase of Street and Smith’s College Football preview would have me committing every nuance top memory!

I had plenty of SF Giants and 49ers hats and T-shirts growing up and honestly can’t remember my first, but I began to Get It (TM) in junior high during the mid-80’s and my first same-as-the-pros-wear item was a link. I remember being very clear when I asked my parents for it that it needed to be the one with link, not the link (an unacceptable replica which was beginning to become popular), on the back. I can’t tell you how pissed I was when the curly-logo-back became the official game jacket a season or two later and I was then out of date!

BTW, much props to PL and all the others who can dig up these old pics. I spent 20 minutes looking for a game pic of that jacket and link was the best I could find. I did, however, find a picture of George Seifert and Riki Ellison that is…link…ahhh, the 80’s.

Mine, I’m proud to say, was a white Seattle Supersonics Shawn Kemp jersey. Had to have the White one because no one had ever seen it in stores. I can remember thinking at the time that it was missing it’s bars that arched across the jersey.

I was trying to find pictures but made the mistake of Google searching “Shawn Kemp Kids Jersey”… I think I may have crashed the Google motherboards searching for all of the possible results of “Shawn Kemp Kids.”

my first was a #21 Michigan football road uni…it was in 1995 and Tshimanga “Tim” Biakabutuka had just ran for over 300 vs the rival buckeyes. being a kid in ann arbor, obviously michigan gear was a norm, but i was the first kid in my class to have a michigan jersey. also, knowing probably way too much about football, especially michigan football, for a six year old, i thought it was a desmond howard jersey and ran around the house doing heisman poses.

My first, a mesh #58 Jack Lambert jersey I got as a 7 year old in 1976. After I got too big for it my mom saved it and made it into a bed pillow.

My first uniform was a full replica Texas Longhorn football uni, complete with kicker-style helmet, circa 1984… Actually, it was my brother’s, but I used to steal it when he wasn’t looking and wear it, even though it was huge on me (since I’m four years younger than him.) Next, I got an official Longhorn baseball jersey which was worn until the logo fell off. However, this jersey, too, was shared with my brother…

My first uniform that belonged only to me was a 1986 St. Louis Cardinals Jersey and cap. It was personalized with Vince Coleman’s number, but my name. My brother also got a Texas Rangers jersey and cap, and his was personalized with Pete O’Brien’s number with MOORE on the back. I was obsessed with Vince Coleman because we shared three things in common… blazing speed (ha!), a love of fireworks, and a fear of tarps for covering the field in the rain! Really, I had never met another Vince so I thought it was cool that his name was Vince. My brother was obsessed with Pete O’Brien because they both had curly blonde hair and played 1st base.

Great work, Phil! We’re all excited to take this walk down our collective memory lane!

The next summer I got the link. I kept them both all these years and now my wife wears them when we go to games (as long as the SF team isn’t playing her Padres or Chargers).

I don’t have any pictures, but when I was 1 my parents got me a Tribe getup, surely it wasn’t accurate by any of our standards, but the really cool part, Otis Nixon signed my shoes that day

My first was either a blue Drew Bledsoe jersey, a blue Shaq jersey, or a blank Bruins jersey. Sometime around ’96.

“In fact, the only time I was happier is when I beat Michael J. Fox at Jenga.”

    Bad taste, sir.

    …I loved it.

Also, my first one was a dark blue Emmitt Smith. I believe I only wore it once, and this was in first grade. So since I didn’t actually love my first, I’ll go to my second, which I received in fourth grade. John Elway, in the second year of those new-fangled unis in which he won two S—- B—s (I’m not getting sued by the NFL today). Loved it. And this is the end of my story.

Wow. Those Phillies teams were my first teams. Von Hayes was the great promise of the post-1976-1983 Era. We gave up Julio Franco who became a real perennial All-Star. Well done with the Hayes devotion! Phillies!

My first was when I was 7 in 1984 and asked my grandparents for a real Phillies jersey. They bought me a souvenir one with screened-logo, pull-over (not button front), and no name and number. They were so happy to give it to me and I did not have the heart to tell them that it was not authentic, and how could I wear a replica?

My first uniform was when I was 12 (I am 22 now).

I was born in Poland in a small town (30k people) but we had a local team (they suck… they SUCK a lot) I grew up watching them and I begged my grandfather to some how get me the uniform. So when he came to America to visit, he knows the coach and owner of the team… and half the damn down either way, I got it.

The jersey, the shorts, the socks… the jersey is a L/XL (I am a S) but I wore it all around… the shorts got left in my high school’s locker room over the summer a got sent to like Guatemala or some other 3rd world country. The socks got worn out but I still have that huge ass jersey and once in a blue moon I’ll wear it around the house.

Recently I bought a full Barcelona FC kit (head to toe Thierry Henry) from Ebay, it’s fake but I have the same jersey and if I put them next to each other you wouldn’t know the difference.

Ahhhh…..It’s nice to see the G-Men in blue and gray again.

Nice post Phil!! Good luck bud, you’re gonna need it. You are now officially being “fed to the message board wolves”.

Wow, some of these choices would be gold on StraightCashHomie.net, including mine. Tim Couch was my first jersey. My second: David Carr. I have a gift for picking real winners.

1st jerseys were a very small, 1986-era home pinstripe Mets jersey and a 1986-era blue Giants Lawrence Taylor.

They were for me as an infant, and as I grew into and out of them, my grandmother sewed them into small throw pillows. I also have a blue Notre Dame jersey from when I was a baby as well, that she made into a pillow. How great of in idea was that, by grandma! I am sooo thankful to have those pillows to this day.

They are at home, in N.Y….where I’ll be in a week for the long haul (moving back from VA). Once I get settled, I make a write-up, and send in some pictures of these pillows :) :) :)

I have pictures of me growing up in a Joe Morris jersey, and Ed Kranepool hand-me-down from my old man, as well as some of the most random NBA jerseys.

ok… so do the jock tags on the rbk edge premiere nhl sweaters (holy eff thats a long title for a jersey) annoy anyone else? especially because if the team has a waist stripe it usually gets placed smack in the middle of it?
    like this:
    link
    or this:
link (tho why anyone would want one of those anyway is beyond me… haha sorry rangers fans, that first jersey shows you where my allegiance is)
    or this:
    link

i know its weird to gripe about a replica jersey but it seems weird to see those tags on replicas, especially when the sweaters are not tucked in. jock tags on football jerseys and baseball jerseys make sense because a) the authentics have them too and b) the jerseys get tucked in. not so in either case for hockey.

My first jersey was all wrong too. It was a Boston Red Sox jersey, and I wore it to Fenway for one of the first game I went to. The whole family was there. I’m not sure when I figured out errors on it, but when I did I insisted on getting an accurate replica.

First, it had no number on the back, but that I’m fine with. I still get nameless jerseys now. The real issues were it was white, but had “BOSTON” across the chest. It also had red piping around the collar and down the front, like a home jersey, AS WELL as around the sleeves, like an away jersey. What a mess.

oh and icethetics has a leaked view of the new sens thirds. with an actual logo rather than nickname text i think these coulda been some of the coolest looking jerseys in the nhl. buuuut because of the upward sloping (yea, heres a good idea.. wtf???) text its just kinda blah, to me at least.

didn’t read all the Nike – Oregon stuff because it makes me vomit uncontrollably so maybe this was covered in earlier columns – but are they trying to make the players look like Roman centurions? did Nike say anything like “this jersey simulates the bravery and bravado of the Legions” or something like that? and no matter how much money they give Oregon the NCAA won’t let the Ducks carry swords will they? please assure me of this…

…just spotted Tiger Woods at the Vikings/Bucs game wearing a Bucs hat with the RBK logo duct taped over.

My first was a Montreal Canadiens sweater straight out of the Sears catalogue back in the fourth grade. I even sewed a number 10 on the back and arms soon after.

    Speaking of sweaters…

First… that Senators third jersey looks minor-league.

My first jersey that I remember was a link.
I was in jr. high, just getting into hockey and for some reason latched on to the Penguins at the time, even though I didn’t live in or near Pittsburgh, and still have never been there. So that jersey doesn’t really hold any special meaning to me. I don’t even know how accurate mine was. I don’t remember the shoulder patches on mine, but they might have been there.

Great Work…I didn’t believe you at first, so I copied the pic of their QB into MS Word and blew it up to 500%.

The letters PAC are on top of the 1 and 0.

The first jerseys I had were the polyester pullovers I wore when I played Little League baseball. I never really cared that they were poly, or that the logos were all screenprinted, cause I was playing baseball and that’s all that really mattered to me.

Please don’t tell me that Cedric Griffin probably will get fined for wearing his white socks too high…but it’s okay for Chris Hovan to look like Larry the Cable Guy.

Wasn’t much of a jersey kid (good luck finding them when I was a kid, anyway) so first pro team jersey I’ve ever owned I got a only couple Christmasses ago.

    link

Mine was a Leafs jersey my parents bought me in about 1975, white home jersey, with black iron-on numbers on the back (27 for Daryl Sittler) and a black “C” on the front. No TV numbers. No NOB (the Leafs didn’t have them yet. Those were the days when you went to your local sporting goods shop, picked a jersey off the rack, and they just ironed on whatever you wanted.

The jersey is still around somewhere at my parents’ house.

My first jersey that I can remember was a makeshift Islanders jersey about 1973. It was blue and orange, but had no logo and very little resemblence to a regulation Isles jersey, but it was close enough for me!

My first jersey was a link with Blaine Lacher’s 31. This was the only year Lacher was any good, and he was good enough that I chose him, not Cam Neely, Ray Bourque, Adam Oates or Don Sweeny, to adorn the back of my first sweater.

The fun part? It was 3 sizes too big for me, meaning it actually fits me perfectly now as a grumpy 26-year-old. I wear it all the time.

Cool. Oregon’s school colors evidently are now For Black’s Sake Black, Duct Tape Gray and Lightning. Not a pisspot full of green on those unis. Oh, I suppose some green the helmet paint counts.

Watching Oregon these days reminds of those Banana Republic martinets designing their personal military uniforms. “Epulets, geeve me some epulets. And some brushes, too. And make it black. I weell be like a Neenja.”

Also, (and am NOT a Nike hater) but did anyone notice that if you let your eye go where it naturally wants to go, it will go to the swoosh before it goes to the duck wings? It’s in a far, far brighter color than the subdued wings (at least in photos, the day-glo may make it different in person).

First replica — Mark Brunell Jacksonville Jaguars home teal jersey (yes, really). I also had a John Elway Broncos home jersey (after they switched to dark blues — this was probably in ’99 or 2000, right after they won a couple of Super Bowls. Hey, I was a kid, that’s how kids think).

First authentic — a Colorado School of Mines dark blue home jersey. Bought on the Internet (I refuse to give the company I bought it from any free publicity — they screwed me on a later purchase).

I’ve always had loads of sports related stuff. My parents bought me loads of Yankee stuff pretty much from when I was born, and I’ve been into them and baseball as long as I can remember (I turn 21 next month, for those keeping track) I don’t really remember my firsts then. I owned a couple of Patriots shirts, but they were few and far between in NY at the time. (I’m actually gonna post after this how I got into the Pats). I also used to get a lot of Giants and Jets stuff, because certain people in my family insisted that liking the Pats was a phase. I never wore any of it. It wasn’t until about 2001 that I really go into sports clothing. I got my first Yankee fitted cap that year (Authentic on field with American Flag patch) From then on, caps have become main obsession. I have over 70 combined Yankees and Patriots caps, plus on-field authentics of the Marlins, Twins (Away), and Dodgers (That alternate with the silver bill) My first real Yankees jersey was a Derek Jeter authentic, but in a kids size, so it fit me for about 4 months from when I bought it in ’02. Since then I’ve grown to about 10 Yankee jerseys, mostly NOB stitch replicas. My first NFL jersey was a Giants home Jeremy Shockey replica, circa ’03 (see my earlier comments about people forcing Giants/Jets stuff on me) I actually gave that one to a friend of mine. I got my second, and first “real” NFL jersey in ’04 when I FINALLY got a Pats jersey, a Brady home replica. Since then I’ve gotten 8 or 9 more Pats jerseys, my absolute favorite being a 100% On-Field White/Away Lawyer Milloy jersey. I’ve also owned several NBA jerseys (Kidd, Martin, and Carter Nets jerseys and a Mavericks Steve Nash that took years to find). I love hockey jerseys, though I’ve only owned 2 NHL ones: A kid size Mighty Ducks white jersey, and a really cheap Islanders blue jersey (the kind they sell in Wal-Mart) that someone bought me. I’m 99% sure though that my parents bought me a Sydney Crosby Penguins third jersey today for Christmas.

Caps/Hats are part of my obsession too… I have a few hundred different hats. My last couple of years in H.S., and my first couple of years in college, I worked at Lids/Hatworld. It was like being Matt Jones and working in a coke store.

My cap collection covers all sorts of 5950’s, stuff from all over the world, and a bunch of verrry random hats. I should get it more organized, and see what would interest the guys here at UW.

I wonder if being a huge cap/hat fan is something more unique to our generation? (I’m 25)

This is why I saved how I got into the Pats from the previous post. I love those uniforms. They single handedly started my obsession with NEP football, to the point where I sit right now wearing a Pats Reebok hoodie and throwback cap. When I was about 6 or 7 (so ’94 or ’95) I started getting into the NFL. Now, whereas Yankee fandom is a religion in my house (one which I proudly practice..LOL) there was no set NFL team. My dad was more a fan of the sport, and would root for whomever he felt like on any given day (which is how I am with hockey). But since I was such a young kid, I HAD to have a team to root for. So, I looked through all the teams, and chose New England because I thought they had the coolest uniforms. Something about that shade of blue, with the striping, and the HUGE flying elvis logos just got to me at that age. I remember my parents searched high and low for a Bledsoe jersey for me, but could never find one. Realistically I’m sure they could have gotten one somehow, but whatever. Looking at them now, they are immensely tacky and nowhere near as good as the Pats previous uni-set, or current uni-set, but I’ll always have a huge soft spot for them, to the point where I fully intend on buying that Ben Coates jersey (firstly because I love Coates, and secondly because I can FINALLY own the jersey that started this damn obsession)

Speaking of large noggins, I had a friend who was and is the Reds clubhouse mgr. He let me go into the storeroom off the clubhouse and said, ‘what would you like?’ Imagine that. So I tore thru the boxes and boxes of New Era caps and we came to the determination that me, Lee Smith (relief pitcher) and the one and only Johnny Bench had the biggest heads in the recent history of the Reds; 7 5/8’s. No cap for me. And the satiny Starter jackets were HUGE. Who WORE these things?

My first sports uniform piece was a heavy, polyester No. 42 Green Bay Packers green jersey in about 1975. I believe a RB named John Brockington wore that number. I actually ended up wearing it for my first season of youth hockey. As a kid, you don’t care. You’re just happy to have a jersey at all. Oh, and it was ordered from the Sears catalog.

Nah, that makes entirely too much sense!

Along the same lines, it could also be that his head is simply hard to fit. I am halfway between a 7 3/8 and 7 1/2 (one looks too big, the other gives me a headache), which also happens to be the dividing point between a S/M and L/XL in New Era and Rbk stretch fit. Adjustable caps and Nike-stretch are the only ones I can wear comfortably.

Take a look through these pictures. You will find black just to have black, what i think is a stupid helmet (the blue one) check out the nose bumper on the gold ones. Sadly, the school I went to has the red uniforms, which I hate for a few reasons. But at least the only black on any of them is on the collar design that is on only a few, I think because the coach just wanted to see what they looked like.
Also, notice the black stripe on the white teams line mens pants is not always black.

I’ll get them in the coming week and either post or send them to Phil.
nice post jay…it got caught in the spam filter though, so i don’t know how many people saw it (hence the ‘quote/repost’ reply)…

i did have a cap like yours (not one of those lil slugger dealios), which i wore with the posted uni…but i have no idea where that one ever went to…im also a hat collector and my mom and ex-wife both never had problems tossing some of them when they determined they had ‘outlived their usefulness’

my feeling about those two is also mutual

Mine was a pint-sized Walter Payton jersey (I was five in 1985), and my brother had Jim McMahon. Dad had the Ditka sweater-vest, and everybody wore Ray-Bans and a headband during the Super Bowl.

Does that mean we get to tell you, “Don’t knock it ’til you tried it?”

When I read your topic for today Phil, you took me right back to 1974. My story is quite similar to yours.

I became a full fledged Mets fan after the NLCS and World Series in 1973 (I was 7 years old). After seeing the excitement in my parents and their friends after the Mets almost miraculous run to a championship, I was hooked. Also owning thousands (or so it seemed) of 1973 Topps Baseball cards helped the cause too. (I must’ve owned 30 Tug McGraw’s that year). So, in 1974, my Mom & Dad bought me the complete Mets uniform set, which would qualify as my first jersey. This set was almost the same as the one you owned. Truth be told, it may have been the same, but it was discarded a long time ago and time has faded the exact details of it in my memory. But I do remember I had the jersey, pants, stirrups and hat, and that the jersey and pants were flannel. My parents had the number “9” sewed to the back for my favorite Met at the time: that lanky outfielder, George “The Stork” Theodore. I didn’t wear it to Shea for my first game later on in 1974, but I would suit up on occasion when I played baseball with my friends in the neighborhood. I can also remember catching some teasing from the older kids we played with for being the only kid in a full uniform, but that didn’t bother me, it felt good to play in that uniform. When you’re 8, it kinda made you feel as if you were something more than you actually were.

Eh, they didn’t understand then, and they probably wouldn’t understand now. Cool topic.

Oh yeah and big ups for the Island….Patchogue in the house here…

No. Because there are other things that “Don’t knock it ’til you tried it” that I can knock… like STDs or Scientology.

…and along these lines….does anyone remember the old nylon (I think) hockey jerseys from the late 70’s or early 80’s that had the sorta solid printed logo on the front? It wasn’t the sewn on multi layered logos of today, it was one piece that perhaps was ironed on somehow. And when you wore it out in the freezing weather, you could probably crack the logo in half if you wanted. I owned a few of those. Atlanta Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies. Ahhh…memories.

Thats funny…I linked to pic of Southington this year. They were playing one of the Bergen COunty, NJ Parochial Powerhouses, St. Joes’, Don Bosco, or Bergen Catholic and I noticed their unique unis. I also had a college teammate from Southington!

My first uniform was a Chris Weber Golden State Warriors uniform. I wanted a Jason Kidd Mavericks jersey because it was the year he got drafted. I’m from TX so it made no sense why I would get it. Turns out, it was a joke because I opened that one for Christmas first and then my dad laughed and gave me the Kidd jersey. I still have that Weber jersey and hope to pull the same prank on my toddler son someday.

My first jersey was a replica Capitals jersey in the summer of ’91 as a high school sophomore. Beyond having something that resembled what they wore I felt in love with just the whole concept of a hockey jersey (the look and feel) at that point. It probably wasn’t three months later I would get a Kings jersey (the “Gretzky years” version, and it at all went downhill from there (moving into baseball and football and even a little soccer) until I actually had to grow up and spend money on responsible stuff.

I’m guess I have about 30 jerseys of all kinds, most still hiding in a my parents basement. My “prize jersey” is a “Wild Wing” Ducks jersey, thought being that jersey was so bad, it’s special. If Paul ever does a stop in DC and I get to go, I’m pretty sure I’ll represent myself with that :-P

My first uniform was a little football uniform. It had white pants, a red jersey and real pads, ordered from the Sears catalog.

In my mind, it was supposed to be a Nebraska uniform. Unfortunately, the helmet was red instead of white. That did not stop me, however, as I used some white tape to craft an “N” on it. It was a good thing that Nebraska’s “N” was free of anything fancy.

Never in my life have I had a pro sports uni…i wasn’t interested in having one when i was a kid (8 year old girls don’t typically beg their parents for sports jerseys), but i do vividly remember all the unis from my teams…my first was a purple and silver (in a zig-zag pattern, mind you) soccer jersey. I was six and really excited because purple was (and yes, still is) my favorite color.

And by the way, if you think purple and silver sounds bad, for the next five years, the jerseys were bright pink. Oh, and my basketball uni? Yellow and purple.

My parents wouldn’t get me a jersey–too expensive, too useless. The Red Wings won two cups in the ’97 and ’98, but it wasn’t until about ’99 or ’00 that I got my first jersey–uniform–sweater! One of my father’s friends took me to a game, and asked me who would score first. Steve Yzerman was coming back from an injury, and it was only his fourth or fifth game back, even though it was probably December. He being my favorite player, and due for a goal, I picked Yzerman. Sure enough, Yzerman put one through from the top of the circles about halfway through the first period, and, as part of the prediction, I won my first uniform. White #19, of course, “C” patch and everything.

A few years later, I called another first goal at a game with the same guy, and my second uniform became a Datsyuk 13 in white.

In 1970 all I wanted for Xmas was a Vikings helmet, living in NorCal that was impossible to find, you could get 49ers, raiders, and if you looked hard enough you could find a Rams helmet. Well to my disappointment Xmas morning I opened my present from Santa and it was a nice shiny gold 49ers helmet. To add insult to injury the 49ers beat the Vikes in the playoffs a day or 2 later. After the game I immediately went to the garage pealed off all the stickers and painted the helmet primer gray (the only spray paint I could find).

    Third hit…oops

Now, I know that the stripes are link – and assuming that the Riddell helmet is the link – look at the difference between link wearing a Schutt and link also in a Schutt in three weeks ago. Obviously they might be wearing different sized helmets, but here’s Chad in another link a few years back.
Carson Palmer has also suffered from inconsistencies from Schutt as seen link and link.

When I turned the game on, I knew they (Dallas) would be in blue. Bad karma as always. More messing with their heads like back in the old days. Romo had some steam on that last ball. I hate playing the Skins IN DC. Brutal crowd.

Yes he did! That pic was as good a catch as Tyree’s though! Not as important but great!

I’ve had it on regular CD for years, and I bought the 30TH Anniversary Box Set this past year. Awesome set.

    First uniform? Hmmm….

I can clearly recall the first baseball cap I ever got. My parents took me to a Cubs game when I was about 5 (so like 1976 or so) and bought me a Cubs cap. I absolutely hated it because the underbrim wasn’t solid green, it was green plaid.

My mom tried to tell me that it was exactly like the ones the players wore, but I did not buy it.

I was absolutely thrilled when my neighbor’s dog chewed up that hat.

As for my first jersey, I got two at the same time. This was about 5 years later. Jersey #1 was a Tony Dorsett Cowboys jersey. It vaguely looked like the genuine article because it was white and it had blue numbers. Jersey #2 was a Bears jersey that looked even less like the real thing — it was a dark blue shirt that had big white block numbers without a trace of orange, a big “BEARS” wordmark on the front and no sleeve striping whatsoever. Oh, and this being 1981, whose number do you think was on it? Walter Payton’s #34? Mike Singletary’s #50? Dan Hampton’s #99? Possibly Gary Fencik’s #45? Nah, good old #15, Mike Phipps!

I also have the “regular cd”…. and it sure is a GREAT FUCKIN ALBUM…

Like I was saying before, that album was on heavy rotation growing up, thanks to my old man. My dad is/was a diehard Joel fan… My parents’ wedding song is “Just The Way You Are”….but I always looked forward to the beginning of Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.. “A bottle of white, a bottle of red…” which I’m pretty sure followed “Just The Way You Are” on that album. Just seeing the album cover brings back so many memories.

Anyway, with respect for the albums before and the albums after… Stranger is my favorite of his, of all-time (yes, I’m biased). I didn’t realize the box set had come out (I was on an island for 3 years, throw me a bone)… but Christmas is riiiight around the corner, isn’t it? Now the question is, who gets it? Me or my pops?

Good god. Color synchronization’s incredibly overrated.

Great job, Phil! I was born in Central America so, naturally, my first jersey was a soccer kit. My dad played for a semi-pro team so I was one of the little kids who go out with the team for the anthem and pre-game photo. I got to wear an exact version of the team’s entire uniform right down to the toddler sized cleats. The first one belonged to the Massey Ferguson Tractor Sales Team.

When I came to the US, I received an entire football uniform; one of those generic, team in a box things. All my cousins got one for Christmas. The cool thing was that each one of us got a different color. Mine was white helmet, navy facemask and stripe, navy shirt, and white pants. It looked exactly like Penn State. This was in 1981, I was five. I have had a soft spot for those unis ever since.

Well, as usual with me, a day late and a dollar short.

My first uniform was probably when I was 5 or 6…..around ’73, and I got a Mercury Morris Dolphins uniform for Christmas from the Sears catalog. Man did I love pouring over the Penney’s & Sears catalogs!!

Wore that 22 jersey til there was hardly anything left of it.

Cap guy here, too.

No Johnny, I don’t think being a cap fan/collector is more unique to your generation. It may be a little more prevalent with you guys simply due to availability. When I started back in the late 80s, it was quite difficult to find good caps of any kind much less authentic ones. I haven’t counted my collection in several years, but I’ve got to be close to 200 or so.

I didn’t get my 1st authentic 5950 until around 1990. It was flat out tough to get good gear, with most of mine coming from mail order.

A Denver Broncos fan growing up in Upstate New York in the 1970s (long story) – I had nothing Broncos related until Christmas 1978 when I woke up to three different Bronco’s t-shirts, a winter hat, a baseball cap, and a trash can. One of the best Christmas mornings I ever had. I found out later is was special orders through the sporting good store owned by former MLB umpire Ron Luciano.

Mine wasn’t so much of a first uniform as much as a first jersey. I was born in 1980 in St Louis. I went through the 80’s in love with my Cardinals but not obsessed with what I wore. I was glad enough to watch the games with dad and play wiffleball when we had the chance.

The team deteriorated at the end of the 80’s and into the 90s. Whitey and Torre tried as they could but they didn’t get the players to field playoff teams. My interest waned, just a little, until Ken Griffey baseball came out for the SNES. It became a religion again.

In 1996 new ownership came along and brought in LaRussa and an actual commitment to winning. I was 15 during this fantastic summer, and I just started paying attention to what the other fans were wearing. My father in the mid 80s had an authentic Cards away jersey that he wore sparingly. Because of this set up I always thought of authentic jerseys as an adult concern and something to be treasured and respected.

My birthday occurs at the end of September and I was dying to get a Cardinal jersey to wear if we made the playoffs and to sort of hit manhood in my own mind.

My birthday came and with it one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. My dad had picked an authentic Cards hom jersey of Willie McGee, complete with the 1996 Busch Stadium anniversary patch they had that year. It was perfect in so many ways. McGee had been my hero from our teams in the 80s, only to have left for a few seasons and return that season. The patch would remind me of that particular season as well as assist the jersey in standing out and sustaining its accuracy. And I love the home whites.

We did make the playoffs that years and Dad and I went to every game, I wore the McGee jersey faithfully. We ended up bounced out of the playoffs in game 7 of the NLCS by the Braves in Atlanta. But that only helped fuel my desire to stick to my faith year in and out from then on.

And I picked up on jerseys too. I ended up getting a McGwire authentic in 1998. I became obsessed with getting one of my own name and number, which I did in 2001. I’ve gone after authentics in others sports too, the Blues in hockey and Rams in the NFL. I got an authentic Yankee jersey last year in my pilgramage to Yankee Stadium before its closing. I even have my dads old Authentic from the 80s. Turns out he just wasn’t a fan of wearing a pullover, which is why he didn’t wear it too often. That didn’t alter my opinion of how they should be treated.

In the past few years I’ve slipped off jerseys and into authentic hats, especially in light of our two trips and one Series victory. Another thing I had always died to have since 1996 was one of the team hats with the World Series patch. After watching the Yanks so often in the late 90s I really wanted one of those hats for the Cards. I need to get back into jerseys though. Pujols is next on the list. But nothing will ever be sweeter than that Willie McGee jersey.

My goodness, I had that same Mets uniform in 1972-3. I still had it as of about 1990, but somewhere in my many moves it disappeared. I have several game-worn jerseys now, but I’d trade any of them for my first one back. I knew even then that it had all kinds of design flaws, but I didn’t care.

It wasn’t a first uniform. It was a first jacket. My dad took me to what was the very first Jacket Day on 8/2/76, and also my first ballgame. They gave out these white unlined vinyl jackets that were very easy to tear. They had Mets in script across the front and I do believe a reasonable facsimile of the uniform patch on the sleeve. I was so proud to own it. Wore it in front of my house all day the next day and almost died from heat stroke! I’d love to stil have that.

I like the first uniform story Phil. I am a lifelong Orioles fan. I have ALWAYS been obsessed with uniforms for as long as I can remember, so it was a genius idea for my mother to buy me an Orioles uni for my 10th birthday present. It has the 50th anniversary Jackie Robinson patch and the 200th anniversary of Baltimore patch. There was a local embroidery shop that put my last name and the number 7 on the back. People always asked if it was a Mark Belanger jersey.

My first was a 1980s era Phillies pull-over top. I loved it when I was a kid. I’m sure it still exists somewhere; I suddenly now want to find it.

But, I too always wanted it to be more “official,” because I wanted it to be a Mike Schmidt jersey. So my grandmother sewed on a number 20 for me; it really doesn’t look right, but it was a labor of love, and that’s why I am sure it is saved somewhere.

When Mike Schmidt had his number retired by the Phillies, I “retired” my little jersey, and it hung on the inside part of my bedroom door for years.
