You may look at this picture of Joe Maddon and say, “Wow … those hats are worse than I feared. That’s a stain on the stylistically spotless (timeless?) Tampa Bay Rays chappeau.”
I, on the other hand, think that’s abso-fookin-lutely genius. I have a hat like that for cycling, to fit under the helmet while keeping the ears and neck warm. And the bill — don’t forget the bill. It’s easily the most valued piece of winter-weather gear. Other than these, of course.
In baseball, there are about two weeks a year where this hat could be useful — opening week and World Series week. That’s when the real weather extremes are still possible. Plus, it looks about 10 times better than the gamer over the stocking cap, or the stocking cap over the gamer, or this. Well, it would if the flaps were down.
This seems to be one of those use it-or-lose-it deals, though. If you’re going to put on the flapped hat, put the flaps down. If not, put on your standard 5950 and stand near the heater. Also unacceptable: One flap down. — Bryan
The flaps remind me of the side panels from the BP cap…

It is from 1926-27. I think Cheli was a junior in high school that year. Just kidding the old man. We love ya and GO WINGS!
Hey does Any one have a better pictue of the Flapped cap Joe Maddon And company wore i missed the game.
I’m with Bryan, on the thoughts regarding the Rays’ “Elmer Fudd” hats. I’ve been taking baseball hats, and making them work in the cold for years. Winter headbands, ear warmers, winter hats over baseball hats etc. I think it’s functional and doesn’t look nearly as bad as it could. I also like the fact that the MLB logo is in the right spot, when it’s flipped up. Pretty cool. Now, how about the foresight of the equipment manager to order these things in the Spring…for a perennial loser?!

Mets white with pinstripes is on my list :)
I found a discount code in my Maxim magazine.. “Maxim17” if anyone is interested.
Those Winter Classic link are apparently based on their 1934/35 link, which were only worn for part of the season… the link sweaters were introduced in ’37/38, when the ‘Hawks won their first Stanley Cup… obviously, those jerseys would make identifying the players almost impossible from the upper deck.
The Detroit jerseys are based on the ’26/27 Detroit link; they were later named the “Falcons”, and didn’t become the “Red Wings” until ’32/33!

Just got done watching my West Ham take one on the chin at home to Arsenal and saw that on the claret home shirts, the player’s number (similar to the back number font) was in black (or a dark color) inside a white rectangular box right on the center of the front of the shirt. Yeah, but quite honestly, is there a throwback the Bears can pull out that will look better than what they wear on a regular basis? I don’t think so.
The only thing they can really do that would hark to the past and be a nice departure from the everyday is to wear unis without the NFL shield and the Reebok logo. I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

Some logo creep I’ve never noticed before… and wish I didn’t. Did they beat nike to the pinkie finger?

If anyone else is watching the Giants game… they just showed Justin Tuck on the sideline, and it was very evident that he uses tape/glue/sticky stuff to keep his jersey close to his pads/body. The numbers up front were all stuck, twisting and bending in all sorts of ways.

I take that and raise you something even more atrocious. I saw it at my middle school, so we’re talking between 2001 and 2003. Some kid had finger sweatbands with the Iverson logo. Yeah, wristbands shrunk way down to fit individual fingers. But not too small for an Iverson logo. I didn’t like the look at all. I’ll try to find pictures.

I do remember those. They were actually called “finger sleeves”.
“finger sleeves”
i had one…but im sure not for it’s intended purpose…playing golf and tennis, i tend to blister, so the usual prescription for that is to wear a bandaid with a 3M tape overwrap like link link has on his middle finger…
but, believe it or not, the finger sleeve also kept the blistering down…once the season is in full swing and you develop callouses, it’s not necessary, but it worked for that
/what the hell is the finger sleeve really for anyway? better “ball control”?

the play at third (just like first) wouldn’t have been reviewable, regardless (judgment call) … and while i don’t necessarily agree with that, think about all the “neighborhood” plays they technically blow too…
what i would like to see (maybe 3 innings down the road…get on that fox) is a better angle on longo’s tag…from what fox showed, it appeared he’s out, but they have only shown it from two angles (so far)…they only have what…72 cameras working this game? you’d think we can get a better view than the current ones
/ed hercules vs a lineman and a linebacker is not a fair fight…a fair fight would require more players
so watching Tulsa vs. UCF on ESPN right now and Tulsa has TTH on their nose bumper guards. They are the Golden Hurricanes so it couldnt stand for their name. Anyone know anything?
And on a related note I have never found a good picture online, but the Florida Gators have a black circle decal on the back of their helmets and I have always wondered what they were for. Any leads?

Earlier in the week there was an article mentioning the text on the front of the Cowboys’ white jerseys.

I think that’s the point about expanding replay- to make the call reviewable. The Bases are fixed points, it’s not hard to put a few cameras on them to check over these things. the TV broadcasts manage to find a camera angle alright…

I’m not. The yellow/green/yellow home unis look great, but yellow pants with white jerseys look like crap.
Huh?
link, link, link, link, link, link.
6 of the best, classic, most easily recognizable football uniform sets in the world. All white uniforms, yellow pants. Okay, one is gold, but you get the point. Hardly crap. Oregon’s white on yellow look might look bad because of the white helmet, or the washed out tone of “Lightning” yellow, but to generalize so much and say that white on yellow looks bad goes WAY too far.

Would that be a bad thing? Do the Niners really want to keep these players?
Actually, I think the benchings (J.T. O’ was pulled, too) might be good for morale. Singletary said he wanted guys who want to win. Seems like he is as intense as a coach as he was as a player, and if even a little of that attitude can rub off on his players it can be nothing but good news for the team.

I’d love to see Seattle in a throwback.
What other teams should bust out a throwback, but haven’t yet?
That’d make me so happy… so happy. We’ll say Tampa, New Orleans (have they really changed their uniform though?), Cincinnati, Miami (see New Orleans)…
The word on the street is that Tampa will rock the creamscicle again next season.
I would love to see St. Louis in the bright colors again and I hope that someday the Titans wear Oilers throwbacks (or have they already?).
Arizona.
Denver.
Chicago.
Minnesota.
Atlanta.

Bears wore throwbacks in the 75th anniversary season. They also wore them against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving in 2004 (orange jerseys/navy block numbers/anachronistic white C on the helmets).
But they’re not doing it with any frequency… *sigh*.
Also, Kansas City.
The Vikings started wearing throwbacks for their “Ring of Honor” game last year. They will this year too — I just don’t know which game that will be…

The white jerseys with black leotard pants are about 99% as bad as All_Black.
The Saints need to get over their idiocyu and wear the Gold pants full-time.

Or those who don’t want it to be a public spectacle when they have a bad day. Not to mention that a lot of the better guys in the NFL are cocky.
I have no problems with a coach chewing out a guy. However, it sends a really bad message when he does it in public like that.
Still haven’t seen any good pics of the Blackhawks/Red Wings outdoor jerseys, well, these earn the right to say that they’re sweaters.
I was watching the World Series post game pressers earlier. They had Charlie Manuel on the podium with Joe Blanton. One of the media members asked about the spot on the bill of Blanton’s cap because during the game Joe Maddon had the umpires check the cap for pine tar after seeing the spot.
At some point during the response Manuel pointed out that he had a similar, though lighter spot on his own cap bill. He said (paraphrasing somewhat) “I have a spot on my cap too. Its just some dirt. I haven’t changed caps all year.” He took the cap off and showed it to the room.
I had always assumed that the players were issued new caps for the Series with the patch on the side. However, the caps being worn by Blanton and Manuel are clearly the ones they have had all season and they both have the patch.
So, apparently there is a seamstress somewhere sewing those patches onto grimy lids. Maybe everyone else had already figured that out but it was news to me.
