Still Bryan here. Sorry, Paul fans. He’ll be back on Thursday.
But now, it’s … Tuesday. And Chase Daniel wore No. 25 on Saturday. You’re late.
Yeah, I know. I have my reasons (note: they’re all lame). I’ve received more than a few emails about the Chase Daniel thing, so here’s the deal:
From Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel, after a game earlier this season — “Every week the captains will select a player to wear his number and represent Aaron O’Neil (who died July 12, 2005, after a voluntary conditioning workout, due to causes later identified as lymphocytic (viral) meningitis. – br) in his senior year. We just think that’s a great way of honoring him, not only for the fans and for the players but certainly to honor him for his family. The seniors came up with that idea and I think it was an excellent one.”
A good idea in both spirit and execution. The result is more jarring when Daniel wears it compared to, say, the backup wedge buster on special teams, but I like it regardless.
Now, on to other things. I’ve had a few good ticker submissions that needed a little more explanation, so here are a few of them before the actual ticker. (And I’ll have more on Thursday.)
Michael DeAloia has been doing some research for his Cleveland history blog when he came across these two photos. The first is of the 1908 East Tech High team. “Love the turtlenecks with the big “E” on the front. And check out the various striped socks. Very cool.” The second photo is of the 1932 East Tech High squad. Michael says he wishes the photos were in color — I agree. Thanks for the note, Michael.
Greg Netherwood was out bowling the other night and … eh, I’ll let him tell the story: “in the bowling alley they have one of the New York State Lottery scratch off game vending machines. Since I had gone to the bowling alley wearing my authentic David Wright jersey, I thought it fitting that the scratch off I bought should be the all new “New York Mets” scratch off, showing a beautifully lit up Shea Stadium in the background. As I perused the game’s rules on the card, I noticed something peculiar. One of the instant win options was, and I quote, “Reveal a glove symbol, win DOUBLE the prize shown.” The glove symbol shown was none other than the old Milwaukee Brewers logo. The website even shows an example of the ticket, and in the explanation, shows the Brewers logo as well.”
Caleb Borchers checks in with some South African logo shenanigans. “For years the debate over keeping the Springbok logo in South Africa has been raging. For many the Springbok is still a symbol of the apartheid era. Now, the official decision (until a billion appeals) to axe the logo on any national team has come. The government claims this is final, but I promise the crap will hit the fan if this is actually enforced.” More info here and here.
Uni Watch news ticker: Some insight into the rugby question from yesterday, courtesty of Don Montgomery: “Ireland beat Scotland on Feb. 23, 2008, by a 34-13 score. It was their last 6 Nations victory, as they lost to Wales, then England after that. My assumption is that they’re simply wearing their last 6 Nations victory on their kit. Other than that, I don’t know. The Scotland match, other than the victory, didn’t have anything else so memorable about it.” We thank you for the info, Don. … Wow. Sweet. Thanks, Steve Lega. … Good idea, bad execution. Mark Kaplowitz on the tip. … Very, very interesting helmet decal on Ferndale High School in Michigan. Thank you for the note, Arden Smith. … Hey, you know that nasty one-day 49ers logo? A helmet with that decal was on eBay recently. Robert Eden had the tip on that one. … Following up on the cancer awareness item from yesterday, Jose Palacios reports that the Mexican soccer league uses a pink ball all through October. … John Muir was at the Islanders’ season opener and spotted a custom blade on the stick of St. Louis goalie Chris Mason. Patrick Lalime has a customized stick, too. … This was in my paper today, and I missed it. David McGee did not. … Funny Team of 18,000 commercial here, with thanks to Mark Coale.

True. I forwarded the 49ers helmet link with a note that the high bidder flaked on the seller, and he still has it for sale if anyone is interested. I figured that something so rare as that one-day logo, and autographed no less, would easily get snapped up for a mere two hundred bucks.
RE: The Ireland Rugby jersey.
I believe that all the jerseys have the opponent and date stitched on for each game, as this game from the subsequent match against Wales definitely has something written in the same place:

and here’s the jersey from the England – Ireland match which makes it a little clearer

Football teams do it too (though again, it’s pretty hard to read)

My Alma Mata Saint Anselm College recently changed thier helmet logo to something very interesting. It is kind off a knock-off. They are the Hawks. The design has a the front of michigan in white, but with out the lines going back. Then the lower back it all white as well with a blue top of the helmet.

From the Baltimore Sun:
The power of Terps uniform colors
Fridge says he lies awake at night pondering new ways to motivate his players. That includes thinking about jerseys.
Equipment manager Ron Ohringer was telling me recently about the time he and the coach surprised even the players by switching to black jerseys for the Virginia homecoming game in 2005.
“The team didn’t even know the black jerseys were here. It was basically only myself and coach Friedgen that knew,” Ohringer said.
“We had the red jersey with the white pants,” he said. “But when they were outside for warmups we pulled out the black jerseys and put them out by their lockers. And as they were coming in from warmups, it was kind of like we had just won the Super Bowl. They were just going nuts,” Ohringer said.
Who knows if the jerseys had anything to do with it, but the Terps rolled up 33 first downs and 570 total yards and beat Virginia 45-33.
Maryland’s main colors, of course, are red and white. But there’s been talk of incorporating more gold into the design.
Uniform changes are delicate propositions.
“Coach Friedgen doesn’t stop talking about how many letters he got when he first got hired to get away from black helmets. The alumni think of us as red and white and they don’t want black as a primary uniform color,” Ohringer said.
“I think we pretty much stick with red and white as our primary uniforms. Black is a trim color. It’s every now and then,” he said.

Ferndale never had that script on their helmets when we played them, I wonder when they added it. My dad was a center on a state championship team from Ferndale in the 1960s. I should ask him what, if anything, was on their helmets. I am pretty sure they were just brown and white then, at least that is what his letter sweater is.
Islander’s wore white at home yesterday…something that needs to continue around the NHL
I recall reading that there is (or was) a move afoot to switch back to home team wearing white. Don’t see it happening as it would mean fans would be less inclined to buy a team’s 3rd jersey.

That’s why the switch was made in the first place. All those teams coming out with third jerseys which are usually dark, wearing white at home was a huge inconvience for teams visiting becuase they were asked to bring two sets of equipment. Wearing dark at home, you can wear a dark third without bothering the other team. With Dallas and TOR having white thirds maybe this is a start of a movement back to whites at home. Doubt it, but it’d be sweet…

NHL exec: Sales of white jerseys is down.
Bettman: Switch to white at home. Require all teams to encourage having white-outs. Problem solved.
NHL exec: But most teams have colored thirds.
Bettman: Get teams to come up with a fourth jersey in white.

Yes… god forbid they actually wear a jersey that is one of their main colors. God forbid they actually wear that color with the logo that fans have been longing for the Canes to use as the jersey crest for years. God forbid they actually tap into an area in which they will inevitably make a ton of money off of when the franchise is year in and year out right on the break even point.
Jesus Christ, get off your fucking high horse. The Canes looked good last night. Other than the stupid socks, thats one of the better 3rd jerseys out there. Just because they decide to go with black (mind you, their colors are red and black with white as a trim, so I don’t see where the outrage is in actually wearing one of their colors) doesn’t mean they’re just following in the long line of other teams. Where the fuck else did you expect them to go? Another red jersey? Boring. A silver jersey? Yeah, and people like you would be on here whining your fucking ass off ad naseum because of how hideous they were.
Fuck off with your stupid ass whining. Sorry they don’t go back to the 20’s with their design like the Original 6 teams do. As far as the design itself, judging from the rest of the Reebok jerseys in the NHL right now, its in the upper tier of great looks.

Looks like you can add VT into the Nike System of a Dress mix… From the little that you can see, I don’t mind ’em. Supposedly there’s some sort of piping on the shorts, so I guess we’ll have to see the full unveil to get the idea… Luckily, VT’s Midnight Madness is on Friday, so we should have more pictures then.
“…Pee-wee football action from UVA-ECU last week. Dave Forbes thought both teams were in black. Turns out, one of them is Michigan, minus the yellow pants…” This link isn’t working, its the soccer link in the previous ticker item.
Secondly, the Hurricanes colors, I was never convinced red and black and white said “hurricane” to me. (I understand the hurricane flag reference.) I would have leaned more towards a darker gray with white, black, blue and green accents. The gray because hurricane clouds are mainly…gray (in know, thats a stretch), and throw the blue and green into the logo as some color, and homage to hartford. The darker gray color would definitely come off as a little more updated than medium gray. I’m ok with the swirling mess and like the flag logo too, I think its definitely one of the teams with a lot of jersey potential, I think the black flag jerseys are a good third jersey, but not great.
Does anyone else think Michigan’s new uniforms look more like highlighter than maize this year?
I thought the ‘Canes third sweater was pretty sharp, but I think it would look better with red breezers. The red numbers get lost in that sea of black, adding the red would help bring them out.
Also, the Carolina broadcast team mentioned that the goalie coach for the ‘Canes thinks the black makes Cam Ward look smaller between the pipes and that should give him an advantage.

The Hurricanes had to go with the red-black-white color scheme because part of the agreement of them coming to Raleigh was that they would play in and help fund NC State’s new basketball facility. To have a team in there using any variation on the color blue as a primary color would be unthinkable for an NC State facility. Just wouldn’t happen, not with UNC and Duke as their main rivals.

Why would looking smaller be an advantage for a goaltender???
If the Carolina broadcast team knew anything about hockey, they would know that the puck disappears into a black uniform, causing faster whistles. This is the advantage of an all-black uniform. We have a goalie on our beer league team who gets tons of freebie whistles even when the puck isn’t secured because he wears all-black.
That’s the only advantage to having black. Otherwise, why not throw some pinstripes on his uniform? They’re slimming as well.

There plenty of room for both old and new looks. It’s a question of how well either is done, not whether or not it SHOULD be done.
But, as we know well, KT, the belief that everything old is bad and only anything new is good is typically adolescent. And so was his post.

Makes the shooter think the holes are bigger than they really are. Makes them think they have a shooting angle when they don’t. Makes them think they can squeeze the puck through an opening when they can’t.
There’s a difference between wearing a black jersey and wearing black pads. Now, the pads, you want them to be white because you keep them close to the ice and you want to confuse the shooter with the leg pads and the ice. But, you’d prefer to look slimmer as a goalie in the jersey because you’re generally quick enough to close up the openings they see, so the shooters aren’t going to try to be as overly accurate, and you’ll be able to smother up a larger proportion of shots.

Again, the advantage isn’t that a goalie wants to look smaller. And I thoroughly disagree with him looking smaller altogether. He’s surrounded by white boards, off-white ice, white mesh in the nets, and red goalposts. It would be much easier for him to look smaller in white rather than standing out in black.
His save percentage last season away from the RBC Centre was .904 while wearing white, but his save percentage at home while wearing red was .891. He gave up an average of 2.85 goals per start at home compared to 2.70 goals per start on the road.
The statistics don’t jive with the theory of him looking smaller in black or a darker colour than white.

Anyone know what it says in the ‘Canes media guide about team colors? That and what they have generally actually worn on the ice would appear to be the real starting points of this discussion.
There was an article in the Sports Business Journal about those UK unis. It’s basically the result of a new focus from Nike on “storytelling” with teams’ uniforms to “deepen its University relationships.” States that 240 of the 320 Div. I programs are outfitted by Nike.
IMO, it appears Nike is launching various new strategies (System of Dress, Storytelling, etc.) to counter the growth of Under Armour and the resurgence of adidas. Frankly, as much as I despise lots of the Nike threads, that UA stuff is atrocious. Why not do what Carolina did and hire alum Alexander Julian to design and just have Nike manufacture … better yet, why not have somebody local manufacture ’em, too ;)

While I’m not debating having black as a main colour, they have only used it as a highlight colour on their uniforms. Only. This is the point of the debate. It has never been used for anything else. Nothing worn on-ice has been primarily black. Not the pants, not the socks, not the gloves, not the helmets, not the jersey.
This would be like the St. Louis Blues coming out in an all-yellow jersey. It’s a highlight colour only, and that’s all it has ever been used for.
Is it a vital part of their colour scheme? Absolutely. But to make it a primary jersey colour? That would go against everything that makes them the St. Louis Blues.
If Carolina was sticking true to their idea of representing link – which is where the colour scheme came from – link, is it? I’d hope not.

Seriously, take it from the guy who has been going to Canes games since 1997… They are red and black.
It fails the “Is it good, or is it stupid” test.
Old BUF would be Black/White/Red

which is what CAR did, so you CAN have black as a primary color, but I just don’t think it’s a CAR primary.

And, surpringly, Jim, all three of those jerseys are now just distant memories. ;o)
Again, the Sabres went back to what works and what the fans love – blue and yellow. They ditched the black (notice the theme!) and red.

Good to see all the hockey talk today. I’m not a fan of the personalized goalie sticks, in fact, I still can’t get used to the visual cacophony on the goalie leg pads and blocker/catcher gloves. Sorry, I’m old-school from the day when these pads were all brown leather. Bad enough the jerseys are eyesores today, but they have to compound it with colored pads and know designs on the sticks. The logo is pretty much what I anticipated, and the nickname (Bears) was also a bit predictable. It will be interesting to see what the unis look like.
About that whole rugby jersey thing, this is a very common thing in rugby and football/soccer. For most of the non-league games (ie champions league, euros, world cup, you name it) teams will have custom jerseys for one game only, with opponent, date and sometimes location imprinted. And it’s always the game to be played that day, no hommage to older games, however good (or bad) they may have been.
for example see:
pippo inzaghi, ac milan, champions league final 2 years ago link (hard to see the gold on white, but it’s to the left of the adidas logo)
or bryan habana, south africa, in last years rugby world cup final link
and hundreds more when sifting through galleries of this years euro cup.
same goes for balls (see link for several, with some particularly nice as they even sport the name of the teams) and even shoes from time to time (i’ve seen it but couldn’t find a good picture at the moment, sorry!)
Cheers from Austria

No, they’re black because young people like to wear black clothing. If they wanted to “further” pay homage to the Giants, they could have done it a lot earlier than 1998, when they added black to their color scheme. They were appealing to the same demographic that (they thought would) prefer “Our Team, Our Time” to “Meet the Mets.”
IS THIS A NEW RIDDELL FOOTBALL HELMET?
Sorry for the all caps, but I was hoping to grab a little attention.
I was watching the Monday night game between the Giants and Browns and I could not keep my eyes off Danny Clark and Justin Tuck’s helmets. Being a bit of a football helmet detail freak, I knew something was going on. I would only catch quick glimpses of their helmets as they would make a pass rush, but there was something about them that looked different from any other helmet I had seen yet this year. I was able to see from the nose bumper that they were both wear Riddell helmets, but they were not the standard Riddell Pro helmets or the Riddell Revolution helmets that were introduced in 2002.
Here is the best image (borrowed from Getty Images) that I could find of Danny Clark or Justin Tuck that show some of the detailing of their helmet.
link
As you can see in the image, the strong contour lines that are also featured on the Riddell Revolution helmet are there, but on this new helmet the contour lines start wide on the front of the helmet and taper and get narrower as they run toward the back of the helmet. The Revolution helmet does the exact opposite. The Revolution helmet’s contour line details get narrower as they run to the front of the helmet. There were also some additional details on this new helmet that I noticed, but couldn’t find evidence in any photos from last night. I do recall that the ear-hole was unique and featured an automotive air-intake quality. There was also some additional detailing on the rear of the helmet.
Prior to last night’s game against the Browns both Clark and Tuck wore the Revolution helmet.
Did anyone else notice these helmets, either in this game or any other game this weekend? Can anyone grab a better image with a DVR?

yeah, sorry about that JTH … UC grad here, apologies
I’m going with Beardface on this. Sometimes there’s a difference between what a team’s official colors are and what it uses on the field. Case in point: The New York Mets. Their team colors are blue and orange (putting aside the recent “black was added as a third color” spin by the team). The orange, though, has only ever been used as a trim color, notwithstanding those horrid orange spring training and BP jerseys they went with about 4 years ago. For the most part, though, the team uses black almost as a primary color, what with the black jerseys and black hats. But if you went to Shea Stadium, all you saw was blue and orange everywhere (talking about the stadium itself, not its fans’ attire).
To the TV observer, the team’s colors might be considered black and blue, since that’s what you see on TV all the time. But the stadium was covered in blue and orange and the team’s media guide says the primary colors are blue and orange. And the Mets aren’t the only team: The Florida Marlins team colors are aqua and black, but they have almost phased out aqua entirely from their uniform, save for using it as an accent color, and sparingly at that. The Seattle Mariners colors are navy and teal, but they, like the Marlins, have almost phased out the teal entirely from their uniform.
So for every team that uses it primary colors on the field of play (i.e the Raiders with the silver and black, the Rams with the navy and gold, the Packers with the green and yellow), you have teams like the Redskins, which uses one of its primary colors as an accent on all its uniforms. Does that mean that the gold is not a primary color? No, it just means that they choose to use it as an accent.
Although, it looks like there has been a shift, especially in the NFL, towards teams that have used a primary color as an accent to have an alternate jersey with the that color (Dolphins and orange, Bears and orange, Panthers and carolina blue, Giants and red). Who knows whether other leagues are going to follow suit?
Marlins’ colors have always been, officially, “Black, Marlin Blue, Silver, White.”
Dressed to the Nines doesn’t show it, but they’ve worn link before. I don’t know if they’ve ever used the blue as anything more than an accent.

In ’93 and ’94 I would say “Marlin Blue” was the primary color in their uniform. Hell, up until 2002 their uniforms had blue pinstripes and wordmarks. 2003 was when they went almost entirely to a black and silver look.
Referencing that picture you posted, they’ve worn the black jerseys so much the last few years that the black jerseys should be listed as the official team uniform with the pinstripes and road greys as alternates.

Home caps were all teal (looked great), road caps were teal with black brims (looked awful). Didn’t they originally even have a teal jersey that they wore with the black caps?

You’ve got me… Nobody in NC cares about the Bobcats. The residents of Charlotte overwhelmingly voted against (85% against the funding of it) building the arena that brought them into town, yet the city built it anyway. The franchise was a failure the first time, and its inevitably going to be a failure this time. The only way the NBA works in the long haul in NC is if they stick it in the Triangle, and even then, it would only work if the big star on the team is a UNC/Duke/NC State alum.

I can’t for the life of me remember who it was, but someone was asked one time about Roy Williams and he answered something along the lines of I don’t know why he gets this rep as a hard hitter; he only hits hard when you’re not looking and in the open field he needs to use the horse collar because he can’t tackle to save his life. I thought it was pretty funny.
I for one, *LOVE* black, both as regular jerseys and alts. I’ll (for once) spare a rant about it, but I say the more jerseys and color schemes the merrier.
JMHO
no throwing wool jerseys or stirrups at me
On the subject of the dual Roy Williams’ on the Cowboys. When the Patriots picked up Kyle Brady last season in free agency, there was a bit of a tiff because chicks were worried that they’d have to buy a new Tom Brady jersey that had “T. Brady” as a NOB as opposed to just plain “Brady”. So I’m sure both jerseys will just say Williams on the back. They play on different sides of the ball so it shouldn’t be that hard to tell them apart.
One’s a cheapskate and the other is a dirty talker so it might not be that big of a deal.
I was watching an Indiana-Illinois football game on the Big Ten network from 1988 or 1989. The Hoosiers were wearing merit/pride whatever you want to call them stickers on their helmets. I wasn’t aware they did that or what they were. Does anybody know about these, have pics, or just want to help me shed some light on what they were?
for the ‘original’ roy williams, i propose “TOAST” for his NOB…for the ‘new’ roy, i propose “DIVA” or “T.O.LITE”
again, YMMV
The trade of Roy Williams from the Lions to the Cowboys is a go, and I get the feeling that they’ll both wear ‘R. Williams’ on the back.
But I ask Paul, has this ever happened before? Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know of two men with same name, same team, same time?
Maybe Roy Williams (WR) can wear Pacman’s vacant jersey…doesn’t seem like he will be needing it for a while.

I am guessing that since they play on opposite sides of the ball there was no need for FNOB or any other kind of distinction, plus they are noticeably different in stature.
MG12, the best pic that I have seen have been from Chris COoley’s website. The rear side also has a strange “Pro-Cap” like extension and the huge “intake manifold” air vent.

A lot of it has to do with the decoration of the arena. The seats are red, the decor is all red and black, and since the agreement gave NC State a lot of say in arena design to as they also ponied up a lot of money. It would look really awkward if NC state or the Hurricanes played in an arena that came nowhere close to having the same colors as the team.

Exactly… the color scheme of the arena is red and black… it would look like a rainbow if you had the hockey team with differing colors…
Its the same reason the Wizards and Capitals had the same colors for so long. The same reason the Lakers and Kings had the same colors for a while. The same reason the Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers have the same colors, and so on.
You can’t have a team in blue playing in front of an arena with red seats. Doesn’t work that way, especially when you’re trying to hide the amount of empty seats are there in the stadium on tv. Its that very reason the Falcons painted the GA Dome seats red-black-red this year and the Phillies painted the Vet seats blue back in the day.

To answer Justin in AR’s question about why Kentucky would use a checkerboard on their new hoops uniforms … according to the article in SBJ the idea of “storytelling” as I mentioned earlier takes into account local history.
The checkerboard is in honor of horseracing, one of the famous Derby horses wore a blue/white checkboard dressing.
