When I first saw this picture, I nearly crumbled. I was overcome with emotion. It might not be possible to explain the full magnitude of its power, but I’ll give it a shot.
You see, I thought Georgia was hosting a football game and nobody showed up. Then I looked closer at the opposite side of the stadium. “Wait,” I thought, “those are people. Looks like they’re wearing black. Huh.”
Turns out, holding a “blackout” carries all the intimidation of empty seats. And then you get your ass kicked.
I gonna go ahead and guess the Crimson Tide didn’t roll in and say, “Oh, crap! Blackout! No amount of houndstooth is going to save us from this!” Maybe in a tighter arena — and maybe not with black — something like that could work. But for large stadium applications, blackouts are kinda dumb. Yeah, it gets the fans worked up, but when they’ve been drinking Bud Light and cheap liquor all day, a trick squirrel could have the same effect (but be way more entertaining).
Snarkiness aside, I really like the black Georgia jersey. It’s sharp. After Saturday, though, I don’t see it coming out to play in the near future. — Bryan
Endzones look stupid in black too.
Blackout would look alot better if it weren’t already dark outside. During the day, if they had a blackout, it might look cool and a little intimidating, but at night, it looks as Bryan said…empty and very sad.
Plus, the “insert color here – out” is, I think, being played out. How long will it be until each team has a different color every game?
If you cannot get fired up for a big college football game without needing to be told what to wear, maybe you should consider finding someone else to sit in your seats that can.
Actually, Penn State rocks like a mutherf#cker when they do the “white-out.” I’m not a fan in the least, but that place looks alive on TV at night games.
love that the Phils won the division wearing their throwback uni – awesome stuff
That Georgia uni reminds me of the Atlanta Falcons unis back when Jeff George was their QB.
I’m surprised to hear Uni Watch endorse the black Georgia jerseys. I think they’re awful, especially considering that the standard red jerseys look so nice.
Sacramento Kings unveiled their new unis yesterday.
Here’s a link to a slideshow from the unveiling.

Although I like the collar from this rendering better than the one chose for the final product.

I guess they put Sacramento on the home jersey in order to let the visiting team know what city they’re in. Maybe to remind the fans as well.

If all of the major sports, and yes, I’m including NCAA Football and Basketball, would drop the “black” attire as an extra jersey, sweater, accent-piece; when it is not one of their primary uniform colors…perhaps this “gangsta” mentality..or lack of “mentality” will benefit society…
Restore the power of primary and secondary colors in ALL uniforms…(i.e. Oklahoma…Alabama…Penn State…all victorious…all classic…all American!!!)
Thank you…now I feel better!!!
They did look simple and sharp. The Falcons should take note.
Why do teams like the Magic, Jazz & Kings go with wordmarks not found in the actual team logo. In the Kings case the wordmark looks better than their actual logo imo…so why not change the logo and incorporate the updated wordmark. If you take the lettering in the Magic logo and apply it to their new unis I think it just takes it to another level. (Can anyone Photoshop that?) I like the Jazz uni although they should have used the font from the lettering found on the logo and keep the layout from the current wordmark on the jersey. That may look a bit better.
I think it looks awful when the helmet, jersey and pants are 3 different colors, with none of the colors being white (See NY Giants in red jerseys).

I’m not. It’s not purple, black is actually a team color, and it’s well done.
I’m hard to please when it comes to third jerseys, but the Georgia blacks are one of my favorites. I think they do a great job of bringing out the silver pants.

But, as has been noted, after last night I think that gimmick will be dead and buried. At least at Georgia.

The exception being a team that decides to wear vests, and only vests, like the old Pirates, Reds and A’s. Then it’s okay, cuz it’s the style they opted wear…consistently. And they need to be cut like the old ones, more like vests. Today’s things are just jerseys with no sleeves. That’s tunic with buttons, not a vest. They’re too wide at the top, and make the shoulders peak. The players ends up looking silly, like guards at Emperor Ming’s palace in an old Flash Gordon serial. Or Gene Autry in THE PHANTOM EMPIRE…(dont’ know about anyone else, but this sure makes ME think of the Pirates’ red ones)

YES. Especially the way the black jerseys got introduced. Without disclosing the black jerseys, Coach Richt told the fans to wear black, UGA captains came out in red for the coin toss and handshake, they went back in the tunnel, and then the whole team ran out to take the field in the black jerseys to the tune of AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” Awesome. But those jerseys will never be as awesome again.

Good one!
Agree with Ricko on the black Ga. jerseys. They look sweet and it’s nice to have an alternate that is actually a school color. Also like the contrasting color with the red helmets. Clemson did the same thing yesterday with purple jerseys and orange helmets. I bet Ga. wears the jerseys again down the road, since they did win the Sugar Bowl in them, but not for a while.
Proposed rule: If your school has two colors, you shouldn’t add black to the uniform landscape (a la U. of Miami plans to do with black jerseys this year even though they have great colors with their orange and green).
On the Falcons: Funny how they went from red helmets/black jerseys to red/red (Bartkowski era), then to black/black (Granville era), and now to black helmets/red jerseys. Seems like they’ve completed the loop. Just leave the all-black dog-fighting outfits at home, please. :)
the ref (actually the umpire) in the Tampa Bay-Green Bay game was just hit in the head by a pass. close ups of the play showed something fuzzy on his hat – I thought it first it was his hair out of place or something. turns out it there is a fuzzy mike of some sort mounted on the visor of his hat. question: what is this mike? why is there a mike on the ump’s hat – the ref makes all penalty announcements, etc.?
And on the Twins: Even though one of the greatest World Series (and Games 6 and 7) ever played was held in the Metrodome, thank God they are going to outdoor baseball again next year!
Mets are going with blue caps and plain whites for the final installment of CHOKE II: THE SEQUEL.
Anyone know where I can find a wide pic of the Penn State white out? I was looking all over for a whole stadium shot or at least one side or something to show my Penn State loving dad, but the only pics I find are close up. You don’t get the full effect of the white out just looking at one section

Wish it WAS next year. Sadly, isn’t til 2010.
You’re right, in a post-season setting the Metrodome was (is?) an incredible place. Rest of the time? Sucks. Lower level, between third and left field home run porch, you spend the entire time with your head turned to the side. Honestly, can give you a “neckache.” Foul line is directly in front of you, home plate is 90 degress to your right. Just awful. Absolutely awful. Terrible when the home run porch is a better seat than twenty feet past third base. 38 seats in a row, too. Imagine the fun when you’re in seats 19 or 20. Not bad for football, I suppose, but just god-awful for baseball.
I will never, btw, ever ever ever ever ever refer to that new stadium “Target Field”. I’ll just call it the Twins Ballpark. “Target Center” not so bad cuz of concerts, etc., and because was the first. I could even have lived with NW Airlines or 3M. But another Target? No, sir.
By the way, this looks like an awesome movie. link
And note the classic athletic gear and uniforms, even on the coaches. Compare that to our sad Nike/Under Armour era in which even the coaches are stuck with polyester polo shirts with weird horns and striping. Bring back the classics!

I think that the key is that they (as mentioned in an earlier post) are actually a vest, as opposed to a sleeveless top. Also having the klu-guns certainly makes it an impressive look.
I agree that the Penn State white-out is the only reasonably effective color-coordination event in the country. The white out has been copied in other sports too, notably hockey with the Penguins and (way back) Phoenix Coyotes. I think that the black-out just makes the stadium look empty.
On a related note, Michigan had a “Maize-out” yesterday vs. Wisconsin. It was moderately successful, but I think maize is too weak a color to look really good in uniform. That and the fact that it was optional (they didn’t give us shirts, only told us to wear maize, so a lot of people still wore blue) made it end up ultimately a failure. The student section was, as usual, completely maize, so I still think that it was relatively effective. I was in it.
Finally, the Michigan students organized a blue Block M within the maize of the student section–there should be pictures of it online today.
At last night’s black out, most of the folks in the stadium were college girls in cocktail dresses showing a lot of skin.
Of course thats a good thing. But, it also made one endzone of the stadium look more like a “tan out”. Then again, you could always go with the blackface look (photo 13 in the slideshow)

I’m not sure when Penn State started their version of the “White-Out”, but the Coyotes are nothing more than copycats. Dirty, filthy, copycats who don’t recognize traditions (excuse my rant).
The original White-Out in the NHL started on April 10, 1985 by the Winnipeg Jets. It was a response to Calgary’s “Sea of Red”. Jets fans were told to come out and “hose the Flames” in all-white clothing. The Jets defeated the Flames three-games-to-one in that historic series, and then promptly lost to Gretzky and the Oilers in the next series.
There was a black chinstrap on 1 of the Raiders defenders today. Also, #95 (i think) on the Bucs O-line had what I can only describe as side cleavage.
The Mets wore blue, which is appropriate. When you choke, the oxygen to your head is cut off and stuff turns blue.
Mets blue.
Sigh.
When did 65 Degrees become cold? I swear those refs just want to ‘look’ cool. But they don’t know what everyone else thinks

I believe the Raider was Saftey Michael Huff… gonna get fined~
#95 for the Bucs is Chris Hovan. DT. #65 is Jeremy Trueblood… damn close to the same cut on the jersey.. I understand the purpose of the cut on the OL/DL jerseys. It looks like crap but if I were playing I wouldn’t want sleeve past the elbows either

I’m not. It’s not purple, black is actually a team color, and it’s well done.
I’m hard to please when it comes to third jerseys, but the Georgia blacks are one of my favorites. I think they do a great job of bringing out the silver pants.
Ditto.
But, as has been noted, after last night I think that gimmick will be dead and buried. At least at Georgia.
Anyone else noticed that such things seem to work once, maybe twice? They get “ho hum” real fast.
Maybe someone will think of something new, instead of all this imitation. “Ooo, they did it, WE should do it.”
(This applies to things as dorky as those Twins’ “monkey see, monkey do” sleeveless vests, too. Jeez, they look SO imitative and unoriginal. Hope they burn the damn things before they go into the new stadium.)
—Ricko
Ricko: Agreed on the vests. I do like the Navy jerseys once in a while, though. What I really like about the Twins is that three-color batting helmet from circa 1977.

Well, if you really wanna know, Phil…
Since the Coyotes lost approximately $30 million last year playing in front of nearly 11,000 people on average in an 18,000-seat arena, it begs the question why there is hockey in Phoenix.
Especially when you consider that the only game they made money last year was in Winnipeg. In an exhibition game.
And the Coyotes have the nerve to steal all of Winnipeg’s traditions and piss them away because they can’t get people in the seats?
We’re talking about a team that has spent money in the range of half a billion dollars in trying to gain a slice of the market share for entertainment dollars in Phoenix, and have over LOST $250 million of that investment over the last decade.
How much money do you pump into a franchise that is hemorrhaging red ink? When do you finally amputate to stop the bleeding if you’re an owner? Revenue-sharing is a piss-poor band-aid that only makes the bleeding less noticeable.
I’m not saying Winnipeg deserves a team whatsoever. It is not an NHL city. But when southern Ontario is practically begging for another team, why is hasn’t anyone gone after the ‘Yotes? Balsillie, get on that. Thanks.
I think the PSU white-out is especially effective on two levels:
1. clarity – the brightness of white really makes the show pop, especially on HDTV.
2. practicality – a white t-shirt would seem to be the easiest shirt to very cheaply obtain (or borrow), if you did not already own one.
Although UD (Dayton) never tried a Red-out while I was there (and I don’t know if they have since), I was scorned by the RedScare student section because I always wore a blue or gray shirt. I wasn’t much for red at the time (pre-commie days), so I wasn’t going to wear it, especially bright red.
Color-outs also overlook fan superstitions. My brother wore the same shirt to every Illinois sporting event, administrative expectation be damned. He thought it was lucky. He was at UIUC during the dark years, so I didn’t buy that argument.

i hope to see 3 untucks this week vs. the phils

thanks! ;)
Thanks so much for the support! I was at the game and despite the fact that I have been on the field for a SuperBowl, this was by far the coolest sports experience I’ve ever had. Game was over in 2:25, didn’t leave the stadium for 5 hours.
I’m sorry Mets fans, but I was one the last time this happened and it’s a great day to be a Brewers fan.

did anyone else notice the cowboys players NFL logos on their chest?
It looked as if they were covered or twisted up for some reason. It wasn’t all the players, but I saw it first on Marion Barber and some Offensive Lineman.

Coyotes. The Predators are still on thin ice, but, aside from the Islanders, no one has posted consistent financial losses like the Coyotes have.
Move the Coyotes to Ontario, and let the games begin.
Did anyone watch the Sunday Night Football halftime special, the Toyota Line of Scrimmage, following the high school affected by a tornado?
I don’t have a photo, but one of the students appeared to be in some mesh generic practice jersey with what appears to be “IOWT STATE FOOTBALL” written on the front.
Not Iowa State. Iowt State. Anyone else?

Yeah, September is a bit soon for the “cold weather” gear.
This is from the Penn State football site that shows the whiteout and also a promo to get the students to wear white

Tampa Bay Lightning played Berlin in an exhibition game. Apparently logo creep in the United States has nothing on logo creep in German professional hockey.

Thanks for the prod in the right direction!
As a Penn State fan, I love the White Out. Color outs can work if the contrast is enough to be noticed. Obviously, white is noticeable in a dark stadium.
My favorite bit is the block ‘S’, where some students are wearing something not white to border the ‘S’. Not sure who coordinates that, but it is amazing looking.
Black doesn’t work at night, because that makes it look empty. Red would have worked, I think, and even Maize may have worked at night (though it wouldn’t have topped white).
Indoors, for basketball, I think you get more color options, since the building is lit very differently than a huge football stadium.
Only one Brewers troll… glad to see it’s so few. Paul, I hope neither he nor the outcome of the Wild Card race sour you too much on your (hopefully still) favorite uni state.
How do uniforms work for the playoffs? Are home and away jerseys the only ones allowed? Or can a team wear their alternates (like the Brewers’ retro uniforms)?
What a strange world, this October baseball.

Almost perfect. They need black shoes to make it perfect.

Teams can wear their alternates. I’m pretty sure during the Rockies playoff run last year they only wore their black vests because they kept winning in them…until my boys swept them in the World Series

i’m not a fan of the sleeveless deal. every time i see one of those things, i think of the guy down the street who mows his lawn in one of those muscle shirts — when he bothers wearing a shirt at all — with the arm holes cut to the waist. he usually teams it with a pair of link pants. what a turd.
A (probably) unintended side-effect of the “White Out” that I witnessed last night at the PSU/Illinois game was how much it intensifies The Wave. The uniformity of color make it so much more like an actual wave surging around the stadium. It was downright disorienting to watch.
The king of stadium gimmicks held several coordinated mixed color combinations last year. Odd sections orange – even sections blue. Of course they flipped it for the next week – then did rotating colors for upper/lower levels – great marketing gimmick to sell more tshirts.
