Baseball’s “patriotic” lids reappeared this week to mark Sept. 11. Much like when they were worn the first time on (and near) July 4, there appears to be no set protocol whatsoever.
From Friday: Athletics, Angels, Mariners, Pirates, Padres, Dodgers, Royals (who played Cliff Lee’s Indians), Giants, Rangers.
Is it just that particular day? Is it the day after, too? What about the rest of the weekend? Well, probably not on these guys. At first, I thought it was a game-by-game thing. The Angels and Mariners are squaring off, both in stars and stripes. And the Giants and Padres are sans flag hats. Similarly, the Pirates are playing the Cardinals, both in special hats, while the D-Baacks and Reds are without.
But the A’s and Rangers are playing each other, too. A’s have regular lids. Rangers love god and country.
Funny how MLB can’t figure out what to do with these things after the intended day, but they had a pretty good idea how to use them to make a pile of money raise money for a veterans cause. —Bryan
Whatever. I don’t see any problem with different teams having different rules as to when the caps are worn. It’s sort of like how towns and cities across the country choose to fly the flags. Some will have them flying only on July 4 or Labor Day, while others may keep them up for longer stretches of time.
I don’t have any issue with when these teams wear the cap (even if it looks like crap). My issue (of course) is with the Mets. In the past, they always wore link link first link and I thought it was a great, unique way of honoring what happened.
Here is the story of why Purdue teams are called the Boilermakers. link . My Alma Mater is Wabash, unfortunately it looks like we got our asses handed to us. But our highly intellectual local journalists got the last laugh.
This has probably been discussed before, but is this the first example of a “patriotic” uniform theme?

Man, I can never turn to this website and not hear a complaint about something (and before you say it, I know I don’t have to tune in). How can it be a problem that a sports company has a uniform template but if the teams don’t all wear the special caps the same day it’s an issue?
Just my opinion.

i agree. there was no overt marketing ploy, and it seemed like a genuine show of gratitude and respect. i love America as much as the next person, but these “patriotic” hats smack of commercialism, although one could argue that ultimately, that is the core of what America is. not a complaint, more of an observation and opinion.

I feel similarly about the caps but my bigger problem is the fact that they look terrible. Even when a team has a chance to make them look alright they can’t even figure that out. Thursday the Cubs wore them with their royal blue tops. Why not wear the all grey road unis and soften the blow. As for the Pirates well they are just screwed. The navy, white, black, white, and yellow getup just doesn’t do it.
Any chance that some of the teams wearing the hats on Friday were doing so because they didn’t play on Thursday? And why are half the teams in that list wearing normal hats?
Congrats to Cliff Lee on a stellar season with a subpar team. Fortunately, I think the Tribe has one of the most underrated uniform designs in the Bigs (especially since they dumped that ugly home alternate vest)
Some aesthetically pleasing inter-conference uni matchups today including TOSU-USC, ND-Michigan, UCLA-BYU and Oklahoma-Washington.
LSU-North Texas and East Carolina-Tulane will both look like Mardi Gras. Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech has train-wreck potential if VT wears the rumored orange jerseys.
In the Premiership today, Hull City are having to wear Newcastle United’s white shorts and socks, rather than their own Grey versions (see the logo).

White Sox-Tigers were rained out last night in Chicago. Apparently, the ChiSox were to wear a green uniform. Anyone know the story behind that? Also, they are making it up today as a double-header. So will Chicago wear the green unis for game 1 and then wear their normal uni for game 2? Or will they again be rained out? Stay tuned!

It was the annual “halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” game. Green hats (looks like they went back to real fitted hats instead of the cheap ones this year) and green pinstripes. I’d guess they’d try to wear them for one of the games today, although I doubt they play at all today. And to tie into the main post, the Tigers were wearing Stars and Stripes hats.

Wouldn’t Sep 17 be halfway? Close enough though, thanks for the info. I do like that green, a refreshing change. Reminds me of the 1937 Dodgers, one of my fave unis of all time.

Well, yes, but they’d be in New York. And I think they like doing it on Friday nights, it tends to be a pretty big promotion (green beer, green hats for fans, etc). And checking, their website says they’re doing it for game 2 today. Problem is, I doubt we get there. We shall see.

with the canucks wearing an old-style jersey, it’s likely that the flyers are wearing an old design in the game as well.

Okay, it’s certainly possible that I’m either stupid or blind, but here are two things i noticed:
1. In the main picture, as well as the ones from the Giants and the A’s, the people aren’t even wearing Ameri-caps. (Dodgers and KC are basically impossible for me to tell, since their caps are usually blue).
2. It looks to me like the Angels’ pitcher in the picture is wearing the jersey, a short-sleeved red shirt, and a long-sleeved burnt orange shirt.
So the general synopsis of my comment is this: why?
Your not blind, but you may have missed the message. The point of the main post was that on 9/12, some teams were wearing the Stars & Stripes caps and others weren’t (pics showed examples of each). Bryan asked why everyone wore them on 9/11, but some were still wearing them the next day.
It’s Retro Week in the CFL. Yesterday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Toronto Argonauts wore uniforms from the 1950 season when they met in the Grey Cup dubbed the ‘Mud Bowl’.
Here’s video highlights of the yesterday’s game:

I hadn’t noticed the socks, Chris. But I’m glad Hull had to wear white shorts. Otherwise, I would have had an even harder time telling the two teams apart.
You’d think, with the Prem practice of a new away kit nearly every year, there could be better coordination of opposing uniforms. Especially with Hull having a home shirt that stands out from the crowd:
link,
With that pumpkin shade of orange, I’d have no trouble picking Hull’s players out from among the Magpies, you know?
They showed deposed Cal QB Nate Longshore on the sideline and, even though he’s a Senior, has changed his # from 9 to 6. I just looked it up and #9 is now worn by Freshman QB Beau Sweeney (the grandson of former Fresno St. Head Coach Jim Sweeney). How did that work? Did the recruit demand #9 or else he would go to Fresno St.?

Yeah, I can only take a few minutes of that at a time. There’s a pretty good uni matchup over on The Deuce – Michigan St. v. Florida Atlantic.
FAU has to fit each player’s name into a confined space between the shoulder stripes and it looks like they justify the names to fit in the space. The shorter names are really spread out and the longer names have been really compressed.

Watching UMD, I thought of a new drinking game to get you really drunk really fast: find a football game in which one or both teams have link on jersey and pant. Every time a player with said stripes link link, take a drink. You’ll be link by halftime.

I just got done watching the Chelsea/Manchester City match, and I noticed something worthy of being posted on here. One of Chelsea’s subs, Juliano Belletti (who came on in the 71′ with Didier Drogba), was missing his Barclays English Premier League badges on both sleeves. According to rule F.14 of the 2008-09 Barclays English Premier League Handbook, “The logo of the League shall appear on each sleeve of both home Strip and away Strip shirts.”
Just saw a teaser shot for the Oregon game. They are in white jerseys and white helmets (couldn’t really see the pants, they may have been the dark green). Looking sharp!

I have to agree.
It’s not really the negativity per se that bothers me, its the random and contradictory negativity. If you want to complain about leagues and manufacturers that are too rigid and enforce uniformity too much, that’s fine. If you want to blame leagues and manufacturers that allow too much freedom or non-uniformity, that’s fine. But you can’t do both.
Today’s post is a classic example. If MLB had passed down a dictate telling teams exactly when to wear 9/11 tribute hats, you would have been complaining about how the MLB wanted to stifle individual expression. It’s obvious that the MLB hasn’t done that, and so you criticize them for allowing too much freedom for individual teams.
If some teams want to wear them just on 9/11, fine. If other teams want to wear them for the whole weekend, fine.

While I understand that the complaining can get tiresome, I’m not really sure how that applies to today’s post. I don’t know how I turned into Bryan’s defender today, but where exactly is the complaining?
My reading of the post is simply, “what’s going on here?” Why do some teams continue to wear the special caps while others do not? MLB usually is pretty consistent about this kind of thing, but it’s weird that this time they aren’t.
So, yes, inconsistent complaining is annoying, but, no, it isn’t really going on today…

I was at the Virginia Tech game today, and even though the unis looked ugly on TV…they fit in perfect for the school spirit focused theme of “Virginia Tech Orange Effect”. Some 60,000+ rocking orange. I saw more orange today, than I will ever see for the rest of my life. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a football crowd wear the same color as well as the Tech crowd did today. If the crowd is really into it, and the team played along with the jersey color…I don’t see the harm. They did look much better in person than on TV, but that might be a skewed opinion because all day, all I saw as orange. Alas, they beat the all-white, gold helmet (insert *yawn*)Yellow Jackets.

There are certain circumstances where it should be ok… there should be something special about it though… unlike what is currently on ESPNU on the east coast… NC A&T and Norfolk State. one team is gold on gold. The other green/gold…. it looks god aweful
Fresno State’s Field has every FIVE yards marked on their field. Have they always done this? Do other schools do this?

I haven’t been around here much lately, but has there been an appropriate uproar about all the untucked jerseys in college football, and how incredibly stupid they look the way they cut them now? It’s driving me absolutely insane.
I don’t know if anyone else caught this, but in the Oklahoma/Washington game the Huskies’ kick returner was brought down by the last Sooners’ defender when the OU man grabbed the untucked shirt tail of the ball carrier! Even the commentators mentioned that if it weren’t for his loose shirttail he would have scored a touchdown.
Sorry, messed up the quote thingy.

Mitch Maier of the Kansas City Royals was wearing a facemask in game 2 of the doubleheader versus the Cleveland Indians. I don’t have a picture because I forgot my Camera, but maybe someone out there does?

Pumpkin Orange? PUMPKIN ORANGE? Hull City wear amber!
Sorry, I get a bit defensive about how our colours are described.
We did look abysmal in grey and white (I’m not a fan of our all grey change uniforms to begin with)and I wonder why we didn’t wear last years all white change kit, which is made by the same manufacturer and carries the same sponsors logo as this season.
Still, as a reviewer of Hull City’s kits throughout the years, I have something new to write about now!
