I’m willing to be wrong on this — I’d welcome it, actually — but why does Novak Djokovic have a zipper on his collar? Isn’t that what that green thing is? A zipper tab? Why? Does he suffer from overheating clavicles? Do the sleeves come off so he can go all Rafael Nadal on everybody?
Oh, and for those of you wondering about the Colorado shoulder and pants thingers, they didn’t look too bad. Well, not as bad as this, at least. — Bryan
Maybe the zipper is there in case he feels a “Flashdance” moment coming on. Is that a smiley face on his racket?
Oh yeah, one more thing. Is there a functional purpose to having one white wristband and one black? Does it represent the duality of Man?
And a smiley face shock absorber on his racket?

“Forehand” and “Backhand”, maybe?
Maybe he doesn’t want his rather bulbous head struggling to find its way through the normal-size neck hole of the finely knit t-shirt.
perhaps a link?
Here is the above shirt with the zipper open…it appears to be a zipper that reveals a mesh layer, i am guessing to add ventilation to the shirt. why the shoulder? no idea. maybe there is some benefit to keeping the zipper along a preexisting seem in the shirt, rather than adding a new one.

Put me down in the “thought Colorado looked ridiculous and Oregon-like” column. I hope that the team has a poor record this season, so as to reduce the likelihood of any other teams adopting the look.
This is an interesting 2-part look at the upcoming NHL 3rd jerseys this season. The images are based on second-hand descriptions, but they are interesting. I like most of what I see, compared to last year\’s league-wide rollout. Kudos to Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Buffalo.

Along with their crappy beer*, St. Louis now has the worst 3rd jersey/sweater in the league, with Ottawa following close behind.
*Of course this comment is subjective and biased since I live in Wisconsin.
the drawstrings on all the 3rd jerseys are annoying. there’s no gap that makes them functional, they’re there just to be there.
I’ve actually seen a similar thing on some sweatshirts that our football team has, but the reason for them appeared to deal with an iPod. You could snake the headphones down through the hole, thus having the cord and actual iPod concealed mostly within your sweatshirt but the earbuds free to go to your ears…No idea why Novak has it though.
the drawstrings on all the 3rd jerseys are annoying. there’s no gap that makes them functional, they’re there just to be there.
Boston, NY Islanders, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis are the only teams with the drawstrings. Since NHL players differ in size from Scott Gomez to Zdeno Chara, the drawstrings allow for a more comfortable fit in the neck and shoulder areas when tied properly. When tied tight, the jersey fits like a normal jersey. When tied loosely, the jersey allows for a little give in the shoulder areas, allowing greater movement.
But the key is when tied properly.
most of those NHL thirds are graphical representations of someone’s (who claims to have seen them) descriptions of what they look like… NHL 09 comes out on 9/11/08. I assume we’ll find out then.

If you actually try on an authentic RBK Edge, or authentic sweater from the last few years, tying the draw string doesn’t help tighten it down at all. I am pretty certain it’s purely aesthetic nowadays, like stirrups in baseball. Though it wouldnt surprised me if the RBK Edge spec sheet said otherwise. (10% faster!)

Reebok has only produced authentic jerseys with lace-up collars in the styles of the Atlanta Thrashers home jersey, the NY Rangers home jersey, the Minnesota Wild home jersey, both NY Islanders jerseys, both Phoenix Coyotes jerseys, both Boston Bruins jerseys, and both Calgary Flames jerseys.
That’s 11/60 jerseys. While it might be aesthetic, it’s still traditional on the Rangers’ and Bruins’ jerseys, so it serves some purpose. Just not a functional purpose. ;o)
I refuse to wear the Rbk EDGE jerseys, so I can’t say for certain how they fit, but the old Oilers’ alternate that I have (made by CCM) fits completely different depending on whether the jersey is tied properly or left loose.
I asked this yesterday and didn’t get an answer, so I’ll try again today.
Are Louisville’s football uni numbers the same font as the 49ers?
There is quite the ugly high school football game on ESPN right now, with one team wearing old gold helmets and mustard yellow pants, and the other team wearing all purple.
Don’t know if this has been discussed on here yet but, I’ve heard rumors that Tennessee’s Arian Foster will be wearing #30 today instead of his regular #27. This coming in honor of injured teammate and good friend David Holbert who blew out his knee in the spring and is likely done for over a year.
The entire Marlins team is wearing short pants/long socks today, to get out of their slump. Pitcher Josh Johnson always wears them, but the rest of the team has joined him today.

The Isles also wore laces from their start into the late 70’s. I think the switch to a regular V neck probably came with improved materials that wouldn’t tear that that vulnerable spot on a uniform.
The old Laces were truly functional. The laces of the latest uni era, however, have a piece of material behind the laces – if you tie it tight, the material bunches at the neck. If you “loosen it up, you ‘ll only get “so much” additional wiggle room – much less than the ld sweater design would offer.
It is with this in mind that I think the new laces are absolutely nothing but fashion – an attempt to “keep some tradition” in the new design.
After all, the slimmer fit of the cool flow stuff actually harkens back to hockey sweater fits of the 70’s

Yeah, they’re just to add a bit of tradition. Adjusting the fit isn’t important, the real jerseys are custom fit to each player- before the season RBK measures each player on the 50 man roster and makes them a jersey to their specs- if they want extra room in the shoulders they can get it.
the laces are purely for looks.

The early days of the “monochrome” look led to at least on college nickname…
(from collegefootballhistory.com…)
The “Golden” adjective has not always been a part of the Gopher nickname. During the 1930s, the Gophers wore gold jerseys and pants. Legendary KSTP-AM radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term “Golden Gophers” in reference to the team’s all-gold attire on the field.

We saw creamsicle in the link.
Someone can check this, but UCLA’s blue has always been…variable. Over the past decade or so I’ve seen the BASEBALL team wear essentially the same uni, varying from year to year, using navy and gold, royal and gold, powder and gold…and seen all three hats available for sale during the year they were worn.
If fact, I think in various college years (fall to spring), the football team wore light powder bue, the basketball team that “dark sky blue” and the baseball team navy or royal (depending on the year).
The UCLA school colors are “True Blue” and gold. The “True Blue” is a slightly darker shade than the previous powder blue worn by teams. The shade was developed by the UCLA athletic department and Adidas for the 2003 school year
Ricko, my only thing is this:

And I agree, absolutely. That powder blue was a signature. Shame to see them lose it. That’s why I was wondering about the new blue. Don’t like it (and am wondering if is the beginning of standardization of the blue across all UCLA teams). It’s like Tennessee or Texas going to the same orange as the Bengals or Browns, though. Nothing wrong with that orange, just wouldn’t be the Volunteers or the Longhorns
UCLA football team is only one of Big Three to use old gold, too. Basketball and baseball use non-metallic light gold (“Steeler” gold).

That’s the Oregon uni I enjoyed (pre the addition of the irrelevant and unnecessary black, not to mention the “tire tracks”), and in combination with the forest and white jerseys and pants…with forest helmets only. Not a big fan of the yellow or white helmets, they’re just too much of the “More Is Better” school.
Let’s cut Oregon some slack. Gotta be hard to sit in the stands and cheer, “Gooooooooooo…um, Ducks!”
(rolls eyes)
Right up there with “Gophers” (or as we used to cheer based on the species’ true name: “Way to go, Thirteen-Striped Ground Squirrels, way to go!!!”)
Hmmmm, don’t know why I got an error message, then a double post… Guess I really meant what I said.
And as a Left Coaster, good to see some talk about Pac 10 unis, aside from Oregon.
there’s no Mariners one either… all the well, they’d probably mismatch EVERY color on that shirt

To be honest, it’s not that hard to do… between that and the duck whistles that they sell/give away, it can make Autzen Stadium impossible to play in… and as I said earlier… the Akili Smith-era Ducks uniforms are godlike.

Shall we just emphasize the “shit” part? The uniforms look ridiculous. The gray names on the white jerseys are more illegible than JonBenet’s murder note.

(laughing) Oh, I think you’ll see plenty of comments on Cal’s new duds (and I mean “dud”), which sans helmets, pads and numbers (and with a pair of Capezios) are right out of circ de soliel. “Okay now, this is where the Big Bad Ballet Bears enter. Up on your toes, people! Ready? And…five, six, seven, eight…”
(REALLY rolls eyes)
It just dawned on me that “Ucla” is written on the helmet like a word rather than the acronym that it is. Shouldn’t it be all caps all the time?

Hmmm, stir in Colorado’s new “textured” panels and it all looks real derivative of ROAD WARRIOR(the Mel Gibson film, not the wrestlers) and the endless parade of combat video games. Football as living x-box. “Well, that’s what kids today LIKE.”

Stems from the UCLA marching band’s traditional script-spelling out of the school’s name.

This has always been my favorite Ducks uni:

I just found a “authentic” of that jersey (tackle twill numbers anyway) at our local All American Sports Fan store. It was on clearance and in my size, so I HAD to buy it.

Wasn’t ragging on young people, just saying that’s how some uni designers apparently think these days.

Yeah, that wasn’t bad, I guess. It’s the “diamond plate” and the two extraneous helmets that really took it over the top. For me, anyway.

U of O needs to NEVER USE LIGHTNING YELLOW AGAINST THE WOODCHUCKS AGAIN!! It’s just not gonna work.
And OSU’s unis this year>OSU’s unis last year by FAR.
Yes, Phil. That. I thought that was creative… if Oregon ever makes it back, I expect that on the melon. I think when Leaf took Wazzou to the Granddaddy, they did something too…
ucla is selling game-worn jerseys like a lot of schools do but i’m not sure i’ve ever seen a football jersey with the crotch snap. it looks extremely uncomfortable.

Get out of my head! I was thinking the exact same thing tonight while watching the game. Even mentioned it to my girlfriend and got the usual shrug/eyeroll combo. Someone should photoshop the helmet with UCLA on it. Love to see that.

Absolutely right, Ricko. They are hideous. But you have to understand Berkley. This is a conservative for the area. I already forgot I posted this yesterday:
I came downstairs last night and saw these from afar, which I immediately knew would be some type of monstrosity the Republic of Berkley would come up with…
