Last month I ran Book Club entries on a pair of football books that came out around 1970 (look here and here). That led several readers to point me toward another title from that same period: Murray Olderman’s The Running Backs, which came out in 1969. It’s a doozy of a book — nearly 600 pages, with lots of visuals of Uni Watch interest. Here’s a sampling:
• Lots of books show diagrams of plays. But this one supplements those diagrams with little player illustrations that are too adorable for words. Next time I see a coach diagramming a play on a chalkboard, I’m gonna be really bummed if he doesn’t include little figures like these.
• Here’s something you rarely see: a color photo of Steve Van Buren.
• I love how the Bears’ white-jersey sleeve striping is instantly recognizable, because it hasn’t really changed much over the decades.
• Less iconic but still surprisingly consistent: Check out this old Chicago Cardinals photo. The white double-striping on the red pants went largely unchanged until the team’s recent disastrous makeover.
• Really interesting facemask here.
• Can anyone tell me more about this sleeve patch?
• Can never have too many pics of Y.A.’s kitchen-sink helmet.
• Here’s a very nice shot of the Rams’ yellow jersey.
• True story: When I was six or seven years old, I reached into a box of Corn Flakes and pulled out a “3-D football card” of this guy — 49ers fullback Ken Willard. He instantly became my favorite player, and the Niners became my favorite team. I remain a Niners fan today, and it’s all because of that football card (which, alas, I no longer have).
• Good view here of the Vikings’ seldom seen purple pants (in b&w, thankfully).
• Speaking of the Vikes, check out these two photos of Tommy Mason — completely different uni number typography.
• And speaking of typography, check out the uni numbers on the Redskins (the dark jerseys) in this photo. Not quite the same as what the Pittsburgh Pirates use, but definitely related. Ditto for this shot.
• Here’s a tremendous view of the Colts’ old helmets, back when the horseshoes were on the back of the shell. I really like this view, because it basically simulates what you see when a horse is galloping away from you.
• Love the sock ribbing in this shot.
• Was Mel Farr wearing a noseguard of some sort, or was he just presaging the key line from “I Wanna Be a Lifeguard”?
• Here’s something I’ve never seen before: Red Grange with his name written on his pants. From now on we’ll refer to this as NOP.
• Still hard to believe the refs used to wear these caps.
• Here’s a rare early shot of O.J. wearing No. 36.
• Ouch.

Uni Watch Northwest Road Trip: My original thought for this weekend’s Uni Watch party in Portland is that we should just have a picnic on sidewalk outside of Nike HQ, where we could lob spitballs at their security guards or something like that. But then I thought maybe the guards might be able to shoot lasers out of their swoosh-shaped eyes, so we’ll stay in Portland instead. Specifically, we’ll be convening at 2pm this Sunday, the 17th, at Kay’s. As is always the case with these excursions, some of you will salute this choice of venue while others will decry it (the latter group citing an assortment of concerns that inevitably boil down to “It’s about 15 minutes farther away from my house than this other place”¦”), but this isn’t open to a vote. Kay’s it shall be.
Oh, and for those of you who’d like to meet a higher-profile ESPN.com columnist than me, Portland’s own Rob Neyer will be on hand. He’ll be the one doing Jell-O shots off of his groupies’ stomachs while I sit there listening to the rest of you telling me about your jersey collections. Should be a blast — see you there.
“Try it on, stand in the mirror and dig yourself”: Speaking of Stumptown, our newest advertiser (as seen in the right-hand rail) is the Beaverton-based Pennant Race, whose very cool tees are worth checking out. At least one member of the Pennant Race crew will swing by the party on Sunday, but in the meantime please consider favoring them with your custom (read: buy some shit). Thanks.
Raffle Reminder: In case you missed it yesterday, I’m currently raffling off a unique piece of Olympics memorabilia. For details, look here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: I’ve linked several times over the years to this photo of Carlton Fisk, with his hand-inscribed uni number clearly visible on his stirrup. Hadn’t noticed numbered hosiery being worn by Bosox players from that period, however, until David Fitzgerald sent me this shot. And then, the very next day after David got in touch, I came across this. ”¦ Take another look at the photo David sent me and you’ll see evidence of another subject I’ve occasionally brought up: Yaz’s custom-enlarged earhole. In that photo it’s just slightly larger than normal, but he later hollowed it out to near-freakish proportions. Why even bother having an earhole if you’re gonna do that? Anyone know why he did it? ”¦ Lots of fun details in this shot of Reggie: The chipped paint on the brim, the “JAX” on his batting glove, and — my favorite — the “JAX 44” i.d. label on his brim. ”¦ “The Islanders held a fan open-house last Saturday,” writes John Muir. “The proceedings included the official introductions of Doug Weight and 2008 1st-round pick Josh Bailey, who was presented with a gag jersey. Got a laugh from the crowd, but, there was no real point to it.” ”¦ Wanna design a mask for a backup goalie? Look here. ”¦ Some good pics among the otherwise predictable content in this gallery of late-career uni cameos. ”¦ Coupla uni-related questions in the middle of this Q&A page with Ryan Theriot. ”¦ FNOB news (courtesy of Michael Sullivan, who points out, accurately, that the supposed “league rule” cited in the article was actually changed prior to last season). ”¦ Why would you compete while wearing your wedding ring? (Thanks, Vince.) ”¦ Pedro porthole was in evidence yet again yesterday, but not for the entire game. Sorry, no photo of the porthole. … Is it just me, or does Bill Hohn look like he’s wearing a phony press-on mustache? … Remember when Jarrod Washburn had to go put on a belt? It happened again on Saturday. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Many of you may know the story of the 1964 game when the Vikings and Lions both showed up wearing white jerseys, but most of you have probably never seen photos of it before. The Vikes were the home team, so they had someone run over to their practice facility to get the team’s purple jerseys. After a quick wardrobe switcheroo during the second quarter, they were solid grape. Ãœber-thanks to Larry Wiederecht for these tremendous screen grabs. … Big Ben’s shout-out to Charlie Batch has gotta be the biggest injury tribute ever.

Let’s nip this one in the bud and officially call it a day already on the Maxim slideshow, which is clearly a hack job by amateurs and unworthy of comment. Let’s move on.
Paul,
The facemask on Mike Garrett is a a Wilson t-bar, Wilson’s version of the Adams t-bar worn by Earl Campbell when he was at Texas. Garrett’s is a basic grey, two bar mask made by Wilson (similar to Riddell’s BD-9) that has the additional, vertical center bar cliped onto the horizontal, top bar.
Ok so after watching some of the Olympic coverage, Nike isn’t really bad a logo creep. Granted they take every opportunity to put their logo on things, but it’s typically done in an acceptable manner. In terms of uniforms, I have a way bigger issue with Adidas’s three stripes. Now back to the Olympics… has anyone else noticed what computer company provides NBC with their laptops? They have huge LENOVO signs across the back of the monitor. Come on now… talk about a bad case of logo creep.

perhaps bob brenly is the photo editor and len kasper wrote the copy
the face mask on the Chiefs player is not a face mask. What it really is-a snap on piece to the traditional 2 bar design sort of in the same tradition as the bull horn or the U bar. Which faded away-only Howie Long was the last to wear it as a seperate piece since now schutt make it all one piece.
Wow, what Rollerball team was Steve Van Buren playing for?
Back in the day, Van Buren’s uniform was quite fashionable and up-to-date, from the helmet* [a MacGregor design?] to the long-sleeve jersey with stripes from neck to cuff. The New York Giants also had these striped jerseys, as did the University of Arkansas and Oklahoma A&M.

Paul,
Slight correction on the Mike Garrett t-bar mask, it was made by Rawlings not Wilson
I was just watching the USA women’s soccer game and noticed that one of the players was wearing a jersey with the crest on it, but it was taped over with athletic tape. I thought it was kinda of funny.
Murray Olderman has a companion book called The Quarterbacks and a later book (around 1973) called The Defenders, all with wonderful pictures.

Not only did I notice Hucles’ taped-over crest, but the officials had black armbands on as well. Was it for the volleyball coach’s family member who got killed or for someone else?
The story they told about the wedding ring is that she’s married to a volleyball player and she met him when she and her partner played him and his partner on some random beach and it’s inscribed on the inside. So now she’s wearing it covered in nude elastic tape so that it can’t fly off.

Paul,
The one patch you refer to is on Doak Walker and the Lions wore this patch in 1951 for Detroit’s 250th anniversary of the city’s founding. Not sure if the Tigers wore this patch, but I am certain that the Red Wings wore this patch (can’t remember exactly if it was in the 50-51 or the 51-52 season.
HTH.
Tigers did wear the logo.

Here is the breakdown of the new Bama uniforms
“The home jersey will be crimson, but numbers will be added back to the sleeves of the jersey for the first time since 1973. There will also be gray trim around the numerals of the jersey along with the name plate on the back of the jersey. The road jersey will be white, with crimson numbers and gray trim; names will also be in crimson trimmed in gray.
The pants will continue to be white, but instead of the traditional two crimson stripes, a gray stripe replaces one of the crimson stripes, the stripes will be widened and no white will be shown between the stripes. The shoes worn will be white.”
Hmmm…

I think the fit will be similar to the Georgia fit we saw last week. That’s the new material Nike is giving its higher profile school’s this season. As for the gray, if you took arrogance out of Nick Saban he’d only be about a pound and a half of gristle. If Bama wins this season he might get away with it. If not all of the universe’s fickleness will be consumed by the Saban/Bama fans implosion.

I’m not against change, but it’s disheartening to watch companies like Nike or Adidas “tinker” with classic great uniforms. Adidas messed up Notre Dame’s uniforms for a while but now they are back to normal. Thankfully the Yankees’ unis remain unchanged, as do UCLA’s in basketball (though the football one has been messed up lately, especially the road version). There is a place for everyone — classic unis and more wild designs — but the classics should stay classics.
That said, I did love Georgia’s black jerseys last year. They used a traditional school color and incorporated into the traditional design for a fresh look.

According to that article, the fabrics in the uniform will benefit the players on the field. I think we are back to the issue of the LZR swimsuit, here and the fairness involved.
This sort of reminds me of the conversation going on here yesterday about how Parcells was going to change the Dolphins colors to make them appear tougher. That resolved down to it’s not about the jersey, it’s how you wear it and how well you play in it.
That being said, I don’t know how much of a difference these said “fabrics” will help to improve the player’s performance on the field. I think it may just be a marketing gimmick from the fine folks at Nike.
Not that I think it will really matter much, anyway. I’m not a Bama fan, I live in Arkansas and they were going off on a tangent about how they thought this would be unfair to the opposition. I honestly don’t think a jersey can help you win a game, I was just curious.
Thanks for the input, you guys!
Is that a shout out to Charlie Batch or Terry Bradshaw’s IQ?
Upon further review . . . I think I know what happened in this pic. The ‘B’ from BRAVES can’t be seen as it’s tucked under his right arm. And the jersey is folded over in such a way that the bottoms of the letter ‘R’ have folder together to make it look like a ‘B’.

Losers need a “fresh look.” Teams with a long tradition of excellence such as Alabama, Penn State, USC and others(even if in a down period) normally just show up and play.
The possibility of Alabama tinkering with their look is disheartening. As is Michigan mucking about with their road jerseys.
Oh, had a thought on Dolphins changing unis. I guess what Parcells is saying that he isn’t the football man Shula was. He can’t get the Dolpins to play well (read “win”) in the only style unis the team has ever worn.

Don’t worry, Ricko. Like Paul said, that article is a hoax. It’s been floating around the web for over a year. They also have an article stating that Alabama will have a live elephant on the sidelines named Albatross.
Just a theory on the Yaz earhole…either he had trouble hearing or he was annoyed by the loud whistling sound the wind makes if it hits that earhole at the correct vector.
I think what you are seeing in the Ruth pic is RAVES, with the B being around the corner out of view. that would make 3 letters on either side of the indian head.

I am a Michigan grad and I cannot stand them messing with the away unis. At least they had the good sense to leave the home pretty much alone, that would have led to mutiny.

Don’t worry, Ricko. Like Paul said, that article is a hoax. It’s been floating around the web for over a year. They also have an article stating that Alabama will have a live elephant on the sidelines named Albatross.
These days, given the egomaniacs coaching and manufacturers obsessed with “improving” everything they get their hands on (see Mighigan situation) it is possible to believe almost anything.
As far as the Dolphins go, I guess my point, really, is that if it IS true, Parcells needs to be careful about the messsages it would send, beyond only those HE thinks it would send. Not good to come in the door and give the impression that you believe you are better, and more important than, 40 years of tradition, especially something like a team’s uniform and logo that have remained essentially unchanged for the team’s entire existence…including the only perfect season in NFL history.
Then again, when did he ever lead us to believe anyone’s opinion but his mattered?
That’s why, sadly, I wouldn’t put any of this past him.
I had that Ken Willard 3-D card, too, among many others. I think I demanded my mom buy Raisin Bran for the cards inside the box. I went through alot of cereal, qucikly, for those cards. :)

Any truth to that, or are they just full of it?
I think the fit will be similar to the Georgia fit we saw last week. That’s the new material Nike is giving its higher profile school’s this season. As for the gray, if you took arrogance out of Nick Saban he’d only be about a pound and a half of gristle. If Bama wins this season he might get away with it. If not all of the universe’s fickleness will be consumed by the Saban/Bama fans implosion.
Apparently they were not full of it…

LSU has a great traditional uniform too, but I liked when they took the framework for that uniform and used it with gold jerseys, white pants, and white helmets as an alternate a few years back. Looking at the Astros jersey at the top of this page, I have a question:
When the Astros introduced their rainbow jerseys in the mid-1970s, did they have a home white and a road gray version, or just one uniform they wore all the time? I seem to remember them have grays but only some years.
I’m pretty sure the Astros used the rainblows at home and on the road. It wasn’t until they relegated the rainbow stripes to the sleeves that they had a road version. And even then, I would swear I remember it being more off white or tan than gray.

Being an LSU fan, I didn’t really care for the gold jerseys because [a] they didn’t match the normal “gold” color used by the Tigers and [b] they were pretty plain with drop shadows on the numbers and lacking the shoulder stripes. Take the traditional link, with the white helmets and white pants from the game against Tulane and I think that would look pretty good.

Right. White pants always with Rainbow Guts. First rainbow shouler stripes were on a navy spring traing shirt, but first in-season use was on a gray road uniform. He bought a Favre JETS jersey 6 years ago…
that in itself is a misprint, wouldn’t you think?
Reading that Favre jersey article leaves open a lot of questions.
1)They claim to be season ticket holders that go to “about 3 games a year”. Your not season ticket holders, your name may be on a pair of season tickets, but, I believe the rule is that you must attend half the teams games in order to be a season ticket holder.
2)Neither the man who bought the jersey, nor his wife, noticed it was Jets jersey and not a GB jersey…what kind of fans are they? Their son should get any profit made if they ever sell the jersey.

They could either sell the tix to some of the games, or they could split them. Maybe amongst another couple/family or something to that effect.

I have Olderman’s THE PRO QUARTERBACK. All the illustrations are his own work. From the dust jacket: “In addition to writing, he is also an artist of the first rank. Many of his pictures and drawings appear in national newspapers and art galleries including the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.”

Thanks for checking and posting that, Ricko. They looked like Gallo’s stuff just enough to get me curious. I checked book review snippets on Amazon but the illustrator isn’t mentioned.
Hey watching the Olympic swimming events tonight – noticed two things: Leizak (the freestyler that saved Phelps Sunday night) gets his Speedo logo blacked out by NBC while the other USA swimmers don’t. Anyone have an idea?
The other has is probably been discussed already, but it doesn’t appear that Nike is painting China with their swhoshae too much. Example? Announcers only have one on their official shirts. Although I suppose that track & field really hasn’t started yet…

For those of us in the western half of the US, can we get a “Spoiler Alert” when discussing prime time Olympic coverage (since NBC refuses to allow us to watch “live” coverage as it is actually happening)? I know there were no spoilers in this comment, but it had me worried.
Thanks, from the Rockies to the Pacific.

…really? I didn’t realize that NBC isn’t giving the western US “live” coverage? I wonder if the time zone differential cuts into prime time?

Yeah, it really sucks! We are watchin everything at the “same time” as you are, i.e. coverage starts at 8pm local…so everything is three hours delayed.
For example, Costas just came on and told us we’d get a recap of yesterday’s men’s gymnastics, because it ended “after midnight in the east.” I yelled at the tv, “it ended after midnight here, too, since you won’t show it to us live, ass hole!!”
My two-year old was amused/confused. I’m an SF Giants fan, so you’d think she’d be used to me yelling at the tv this summer…
What really makes me mad, is that it’s not like we’re not used to live sports starting early. Sunday Night Baseball, Sunday and Monday Night Football, World Series games, and all the rest start at 5pm and it’s fine. We’re used to it, we can deal! (plus we get to let the kids watch the WS, a common complaint Back East). In fact, I actually prefer it to when I lived in DC.
Okay, I’m done venting now. Sleep well right-coasters…
…bummer about the coastal problems – I’m in CDT watching it live with EDT…another issue just discovered…could Ralph Lauren found a larger pony to put on the official blazer?

i spent some time (vaycay’s) on the west coast, cali, vegas…even hawaii…and MAN…i LOVED being able to watch ‘earlier’ baseball (and satellite)…one wedding the ex-wife and i attended in furnace creek (death valley)…which we piggybacked with vegas… was during the ’00 playoffs and it was awesome seeing the mets dispense with the giants and cards (and rick ankiel heh) before the sun set…then off to the spas and pools and shit later on…

With all of these World Records breaking left and right in the Water Cube at the Olympics, is anyone pointing to the LZR suit by Speedo? I remember back in the early 90’s when the “clamp” or “clap” skates were introduced at the Winter Games for speed skating, records broke all over the place there too. Can these records in swimming be based on the suit? Or is something else coming into play. I mean these people are smashing records by full seconds!

They actually brought this up on the CBC coverage in Canada tonight. Ron MacLean was talking about how the new suits might be affecting overall times, especially in the relays.
However, there is also a lot to be said about how swimming has become a much more competitive sport in the last 4-8 years since Athens. That might be the biggest reason, but the suits probably shave tenths of a second off the total times.
Regarding the NFL FNOB rule — I might be hallucinating this, but didn’t the Bengals have an odd mismatch of “Johnson”s the last few years? Chad was “C.”, Rudi was “R.” or “Rudi”, but I remember at least one other Johnson last year (or maybe a previous year) who was without initial. In my search for proof, I came across link and it’s kinda hard to see, but it could have been Landon link but I found a similar bad example link
Am I totally making this up, or does somebody else remember it too?
The Bengals used to have LB Riall Johnson who had his full name on the back of the jersey during the same period Rudi had his full name on the back. After Riall was cut Rudi switched to just “R. Johnson.” Pictures of Landon are hard to find.
During last night’s game Chad had “C. Johnson” but running back James Johnson and linebacker Brandon Johnson just had “Johnson.” Rudi was not at the game because he is still nursing that 14 month long hamstring pull, but I would assume he’ll still have the “R. Johnson” from last year. We’ll see if the other guys get their first initial added if they make the roster.
Do not feed trolls.

My family has a pair of Packers season tickets as well, and actual members of our family only attend between 2-4 home games per year. The others are sold to offset the cost of the tickets.
Some people who have tickets use most but then sell their tickets to one game: Packers-Bears. The money they make from selling those tickets alone usually pays for the entire rest of the season.
Also, I’m currently watching US vs. Australia Softball on CNBC (yes, I’m Olympics addicted). First, imagine what Australia’s women’s basketball team’s uniforms look like:

Now imagine that with slightly looser shorts and high yellow socks. Ick.

Now the worst part: the catcher’s gear has a different shade of green. Can’t find any pics at the moment, but rest assured it’s ugly.
Watching the Canada/China baseball game tonight – it looks like Baseball Canada improvised their logo on their jersey to conform. Usually the C on the logo goes all the way to bottom right of the maple leaf. But I’ve noticed that the C has been cut down to match symmetrically.
Not only that, they have the Canadian Olympic Association logo on the right arm of the jersey. And on the back of the cap, the COA logo is instead of the Baseball Canada typeface logo. I’ll try to get pics later
