With These Two, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

GYI0055411191080121_1024x768.jpg

Well, Manny’s a Dodger, which looks strange and wrong. Also scoring points on the strange and wrong chart is Manny’s spotless new helmet. By Monday, god willing, that logo will be completely obscured. (Note also, Manny shuns the Cool-Flo, unlike many of his teammates.)

And while we’re noting strange and wrong things, check the lettering on Jeff Kent’s jersey. I know the precious BP jerseys need heat-press letters and numbers, since standard tackle twill is too heavy for the BP jerseys, but that looks like crap. Cheap. Like a rogue souvenir-stand knockoff. It’s on the level of some guy pulling on some baggy white sweatpants and wandering around in left field. — Bryan

More equipment related than unicentric and a bit old, but I figured some might be interested in a BBC photo-set of a local Nigerian boxing league.

    link

I don’t see the big issue with Kent’s BP jersey. Other than that odd looking gray drop shadow anyway. But it’s still early in the morning.

The Nigerian boxing photos are interesting. I would hate to have to fight against someone who was the opposite hand. Very easy to get clocked and never see it coming. Also, the guy in the first picture is absolutely ripped.

Check out the red glove, high socks, white shoes and red laces on Manny.

Also check out the red spikes on Andruw’s shoes.

Now that should have been the lead picture this morning.

Twins wore patches to remember the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge on its 1 year anniversary last night against the Indians. Searching for a pic, but it was on right sleeve.

So now that Junior is wearing #17 with the White Sox he has worn a single digit (3), a teen (17), a twenty (24), a thirty (30), and a forty (42 for Jackie Robinson). Pretty odd for a future HOFer and a guy that has only played for 3 teams.

Wherever he plays next year, he needs to bust out a 50-something number.

This isn’t uni-related, but I know some people here must follow stats too. I remember as a kid (which was only a few years ago) that when a player got traded from the AL to NL or vice versa, that his stats were reset. Did this used to be the case before interleague play?

For example, Manny’s stats went with him to LA:
    link

Griffey only wore 17 for one night- he wears 30 today. Making that appearance in 17 a true rarity

Gary Coleman made his baseball debut for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League last night. I have to say he looks pretty sharp, considering that none of the Mallards ever shows socks. The Northwoods League is a summer wooden bat college league, consisting of teams from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and Ontario.

    [/link]http://www.mallardsbaseball.com[/link]

Someone posted last night that Junior would keep #17 the rest of the year. I guess we have to wait and see what he comes out wearing today.

a couple uni related tid bits here:

    link

Ramirez, who wore No. 24 during his seven-plus seasons in Boston, will wear No. 99 in Los Angeles. Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston wore No. 24 with the Dodgers, and that jersey is retired.

“I don’t know why they gave me 99,” he said. “I wanted 34.”

No. 34, worn by Fernando Valenzuela in the 1980s, isn’t officially retired, but clubhouse manager Mitch Poole said: “In our hearts, it is, and in the Mexican community. It was 66, then it went to 99 in a matter of minutes. It was all through the agent (Scott Boras) and his staff.”

    Also:

Torre said he asked Ramirez how important his hair was to him and was told he’d do whatever the manager wanted. Torre said he asked Ramirez to “clean it up a little bit and make it manageable.”

“I’ve got to cut it. I’m going to be looking like a baby,” Ramirez said with a smile. “I don’t want them to treat me different than the other guys. If they want me to cut it, I’ll cut it. It will grow back.”

ok, the Gary Coleman thing is funny, but not “ha-ha” funny. I didn’t laugh at all. In fact, what is the opposite of laugh? that’s what I did. see what I mean link.

Here\’s something funny. WhiteSox.com- which lists all player numbers- shows Swisher changing to #1 from #30, but shows Griffey at 17:

    link

I wonder if his excellent performance yesterday has led him to want to keep the number?

    according to wikipedia:

Ramirez has always worn uniform number 24, but the Dodgers have retired that number in honor of Hall-of-Fame manager Walter Alston. Ramirez countered the Dodgers suggestion of 28 by suggesting 34, but no Dodger has worn that number since Fernando Valenzuela. Ramirez finally accepted number 99, but the next day asked for 28, the Dodgers’ original suggestion. However, the Dodgers’ marketing department had already begun producing merchandise with number 99, so Ramirez will wear that number.

so does anyone know officially if manny is 99 or 28?

Gary Coleman should have been wearing number 4/25 (four twenty-fifths) in honor of Eddie Gaedel.

It’s, at the very least, off-center. The MLB logo should be between the E and the N perfectly.

It also looks like it might be a tad lopsided, but that might be how the jersey is wrinkled on Officer Dangle’s back.

Hey, there’s a pic of Andruw Jones’ batting helmet I couldn’t find a pic of the other day – he has an American flag sticker on the back of it.

Manny as a Dodger looks…out of place. But he obviously burned a bridge. Speaking of burning bridges, look at that photo of that swell guy Jeff Kent. He’s in Wikipedia under “Clubhouse Cancer” and..well, decorum prevents me from listing the other terms here.

    PS-
This is going to be a stupid question–one I should know. Tell me why eye black is applied. Something about glare, I know. But how does it work? I’ve only wondered this for, oh, 30 years. But I DO know what the green dot is for.

It provides you a place to write your area code.

Someone should tell MLB Shop that Griffey is wearing 17. They have an ad on the White Sox page that says be the first with a Griffey jersey and it shows 30.

So this isn’t technically so much about uniforms but i saw a picture of Favre on the cover of Madden 09 and was wondering if his current situation would be continuing the so called Madden Curse?
And they wouldn’t change the cover picture if he moved to a different team would they? Not a big video game guy so does anyone know if someone has changed teams the same year the were featured on the cover?

It will still be split. As far as the NL MVP and other awards are concerned, Manny has only played one game this season…

Just noticed the other day (on an ad for the game on a Blockbuster wall) that Favre is wearing a jersey he’s never worn before on the game cover. How could that be? It’s a Packers jersey, but with the new NFL shield already in place. The new logo is also on “The Duke,” meaning he’s about to throw a football he’s never thrown in a game before as well.

Who cares what the batting practice jersey looks like? The Dodgers, unlike (thankfully) the Rays and Mariners, don’t wear them in game action.

    >>

Actually, Andruw Jones is the ONLY Dodger to wear a cool-flo helmet. Everyone else wears the traditional style.

I was looking at Miami Dolphins jerseys online and noticed something strange. Everyone had the dropshadow on their numbers going to down and the right, exept for Crowder and Roth, who for some reason go UP and to the right.

there was a mythbusters episode to see if it worked. i think they concluded that it had no effect on glare.

Okay, Paul, this is from yesterday. I agree with you that the Brewers regular uniforms are mediocre, but no mention of their pinstripe throwbacks? It’s a classic beautiful look. The Brewers made their biggest mistake by losing the ball and mitt logo.

Those new Phoenix Coyotes logos are pretty kickin’ – love that circular paw shoulder patch and the word mark, all very classy. Exactly the direction NHL logos should be going.

The leaping coyote’s alright, not much of a huge change over the current howling coyote head but still a pretty good design.

When can we expect a big column on all the new NHL 3rd jersey designs? The new logos are starting to trickle in by the day, I’m anxious for opinions

It isn’t so much what eyeblack does, but what it DOESN’T to. Black “holds/absorbs” light in the sense that it doesn’t reflect it (this is why only someone crazy would drive a car with a black interior in Phoenix). Light colors such as skin tones reflect light. Elminating a bit of glare up from the cheekbone just under the eye makes a difference on extremely sunny days.

Ever seen those eskimo “sunglasses” with the narrow slit across the eyes? Same principle.

I can tell u firsthand it works. I’ve used eyeblack every once in a while for years. Keep a tube in my bat bag. Never owned prescription sunglasses to wear instead of my regular glasses so had to try something. Can tell the improvement immediately after applying it.

“Mythbusters”? Yeah, real baseball guys. Tested sliding compared to going in standing up. Well, duh. That was like telling us we can scrunch training tape into a ball. Shoulda compared sliding into first compared to overrunning it. That actually might have been worth the time and effort.

If I recall correctly, glare wasn’t reduced until they added a baseball cap, which the combination of the two resulted in the most reduction of glare. More on it over here:

As an aside, quite a big mythbusters fan here, and I agree that the baseball sliding test was a little odd, but I enjoyed their pitching analysis, cork/not corked bat testing, and the effect of humidity on the baseball when hit.

    My point exactly.

Bry for the record, I think the Dodgers are just cheap. The Phillies use twill on their BP’s, the Mets do too I think.

I’m sorry, is it still baseball season? The Twins are in a pennant race (well, sort of) and here in Minnesota it is Day (well, I Don’t Care What Day It Is) of The Favre Watch.

Even without him the Vikings seem to have a decent chance at the division title. Packers were something of surprise last year (largely because of Favre), key guys on defense are a year older, QB is unproven. Bears and Lions are, well…they’re still in the league, anyway. So far.

Know what the irony in all this is? In his second game, wherever he ends up, Favre will probably blow an ACL and all this will have been much ado about nothing.

What is it about pro football players (Unitas, Namath and notable others) that that they insist on hanging on one year too long?

The auction itself was up to slightly over $250, but the seller ended the auction early, so I never got to see a final price on what others thought it was worth. It’s still a mystery.
