Hey, didn’t you used to be Jose Canseco? The high shorts and tank top aren’t doing Jose — or perhaps Ozzie — any favors. But here’s the deal: Vai Sikahema, who is apparently a former NFL player, knocked out Old Uncle ‘Roidbags in the first round of an exhibition boxing match last night in Atlantic City. They played it at the ballpark there, which clearly didn’t help Jose at all. Oh, and it was a fund-raising exhibition … for Jose and Via, probably. Keep the gloves up today, folks. — Bryan

It’s Vai Sikahema. Played for Cardinals, Packers, and, probably most famously, the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s nice that you don’t let your ignorance about sports get in the way of writing for a sports-themed web site.

You can’t trust those photogs. They spend too much reading their light meters and not enough reading the names on the programs. :)

All fighters pull up the waist of their trunks. “No hitting below the belt,” remember.

Apparently Canesco should have pulled his up over his head.

Is Vai still a sports reporter in Philly? he was on NBC iirc when I lived there in 2002-03

Admittedly not as much of a Mets follower as some people on here, so I hope I don’t look like a fool when I ask this:

Have the Mets always had pure blue coolflo helmets? Watching highlights from yesterday, and I was shocked when they weren’t wearing the hideous fade blue to black version. At first, I thought they were wearing traditional helmets instead. It was nice to see more blue accessories overall, as well. Could this be the weaning of the black that’s been called for for so long?

Yeah he is still on NBC and they have been following his entire training and preperation for this fight since it was announced.

Wow, Bryan. Vai had a pretty good career, both on the field and now on local news. I guess because you never heard of him you just assumed he was a nobody and was worth taking a smug shot at.

Do a little research before you post these things. Oh, and wtf does this have to do about unis?

Compare and contrast the names: Jose Canseco vs. Vai Sikahema. Really big name vs. not so really big name. Which one has 90 percent of the country heard of? It’s not the one that ends with Sikahema.

Not a big fan of “fade to” helmets, but in the case of the Mets they sorta make sense cuz they match either hat.

Rockies have “fade to” helmets, too, right? Do any other teams?

    I like Vai’s quote on ESPN.com:

Canseco’s size advantage — he is 6-foot-4, 245 pounds to Sikahema’s 5-9, 205 — was not a factor in the bout, which was over in the first round.

“When you step inside the square circle,” Sikahema said, according to the Press of Atlantic City, “don’t ever think that your size is going to matter because in Philadelphia, we will chop you down.”

Sikahema was asked if there were any surprises.

“That it didn’t finish in the first 30 seconds,” he said.

Before someone picks at it, I know Mets have three hats, so “either” doesn’t sound right, I know. I was thinking of the color of the crowns of the hats…royal or black

Apparently “BigBootyLover” couldn’t find his dog to kick this morning, so he took it out a website.

Vai Sikahema last played in the National Football League in 1993.

If his name was Vai Johnson, I doubt there’d be a fuss.

Mr. Sikahema did show off his boxing skills at Giants Stadium against the New York Football Giants after returning as punt for a touchdown, he promptly smacked down the goalpost padding IIRC.

I can’t help but think of Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES when I see the name Vai Sikahema. You could almost always beat the Cardinals in that game, but Sikahema was a beast for them on kick returns.

Okay, on a more uniformity note, I went to the DHL All-Star Fan fest in New York City yesterday (7/12). Besides getting some great swag (one of witch I will tell Paul about in an E-mail and might consider a contest), whilst all the male “coaches” were wearing pajamas, the sole female coach – Stephanie – actually wore high pants and low stirrups and “Got It.” (TM). Other notes from the observations:

    * The Sports Experience team had two members with old school Red Sox stirrups (Navy-white-navy-white-red striping). However, for negativity, a feamle member did not wear whits socks underneath and the male had black socks. They “Didn’t Get It!”(TM)

    * At the Gilette Showwer and Shave booth, there were some, er, rather nice looking ladies wearing white miniskirts and knee high socks with three blue stripes on top. A sexist soccer team, even with form fitting baseball jerseys?

    * An actor in the Hall of Fame booth was dressed as “Casey at the Bat”, comlete with handlebar mustache, flannel uni with “MUDVILLE” across the front and high top black shoes (no, they weren’t spikes).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must take a break and check out the freebies.

It depends on what you consider “often”. As of the last week or so, they have, because for some unknown (wonderful?) reason, they’ve been wearing the blue hats for most games. Look for them to go back to the fades once they go back on the road and start using the blue/black caps.

Here’s an interesting thought: I wonder if the Mets will wear blue caps / helmets to the All-Star Game? Since the reason given for the blue caps with the road grays at Yankee Stadium was to mark the Mets’ last intergleague game at the Stadium by outfitting them in the uniform they wore for the first interleague game there (sans the black dropshadow), why not for the last All-Star Game ever at the Stadium?. It would be a nice touch, but I don’t expect it.

What’s up with attacking BigBootyLover? And by the way, if you ARE going to goof on someone else, at least make sure that what you wrote makes sense. “So he took it out a website?” Proofreading goes a long way. Not surprisingly, Bryan did a better, and wittier, job of responding on his own behalf

However, BigBootyLover made a valid point. Vai Sikahema is not “apparently” a former NFL player. Apparent is defined as “ostensible rather than actual”. And Vai Sikahema was an actual NFL player, and a two-time Pro Bowler to boot.

Unless, of course, Bryan doesn’t consider special teamers, which Sikahema was, to be NFL players.

that’s a pathetic photo of Canseco. What a tired, spent, puffed up blob. Sad, innit?

Bryan, I’ve defended you in the past as I think a lot of folks have gotten their panties in a bunch about your posts, but this time, I’ll side with them. It would have taken you a grand total of two seconds to research who Vai was on Pro Football Reference: link

You’re assuming I care who Vai Sikahema is. I don’t. And it wasn’t the point of the post anyway.
Translation: In not so many words, yeah, we yellow boxes can do whatever we want and there’s two things you peons can do about it: Nothing, and like it.
Or you can go read a different blog or start your own. Takes about 30 seconds and then you can say whatever you want.

I think you’re missing the point. First of all, that read-a-different-blog-or-start-your-own is a lame, say-nothing response. How are we supposed to have honest/open debate if that’s going to be the “comeback”?

Second, and more importantly, my original message was a reference to Paul’s polite and professionally asked request from a few days ago when he asked ALL OF US (or so I thought) to not stray too much off topic. Yet today when Bryan’s pressed by someone on this very subject (because of the lack of today’s post not really having uni-related subject matter) he tells that poster to relax and that everything doesn’t have to be about uniforms.

Maybe I’m the only one, but I find that a tad contradictory to what the owner of the site had to say a few days ago.

Let’s hope against hope that these are some type of fashion jerseys, etc. and not what they intend to wear. Between these and the new UNLV unis, we now have at least TWO hideous new jersey sets for colege football. Both make the worst of the University of Oregon unis look sensible !!!!

Maybe it’s just shear logic, I don’t know, but I think if Bryan’s posting something on here then chances are it’s been approved by Paul. Paul’s probably told Bryan, in detail, what he can and can’t post and if he didn’t like it, would likely change it. If you guys haven’t figured out that Paul gets what he wants on this site by now then you’re just not smart. Paul “hired” Bryan. In other words, Paul wanted the type of stuff Bryan wrote. Makes sense to me. Some people just can’t have any fun. It’s a weekend post. Get over it. You guys know what to expect on the weekends. If you don’t like it, read Monday thru Friday.

Well said. Not surprisingly, that “if you don’t like it, start your own blog” response has been used before by the yellow boxes, so no surprise that one of Uniwatch’s lemmings would use it.

Even if they are “fan gear” I suppose we can assume they look SOMETHING like the game jerseys. Hey, it’s same old Nike…never connect any two points with a straight line. Because there are theorhetically an infinite number of ways to do that, it means the results won’t always look good. I like some of the inventiveness in unis they days, but most times it seems the designers either foul off the pitch or miss it completely. Conceptually, it intriguing. The results, though, are uneven at best. As I’ve said before, when everyone tries to be unique, no one is.

Just because “no one’s ever worn a jersey like this” doesn’t automatically make it a great uniform. I’m reminded of the line from JURASSIC PARK about knowing that you CAN do something is one thing, but you also need to stop to ponder whether you SHOULD.

I wonder, honestly, if the school’s involved have any veto power at all, of if Nike is providing so much gear that they’re backed into a corner. Hard to believe all these schools have suddenly jumped on board with this whole new theory of uni design. You’d think some coach would say, “What the hell, I like stripes. Plain, traditional stripes. And you can’t–or won’t–give them to me?”

to be fair, the $5000 that Vai got for the match was donated to the family of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, a Philadelphia police officer that was shot and killed while responding to a bank robbery

    Duly noted.
