Wow, What A Horrible Idea.

capt.3dafcac388634acdb2d5314ba422a2a0.nationals_reds_baseball_csb106.jpg

The Reds may have been the first all-professional baseball team, but they’ve done some stupid-ass stuff over the years. Without getting into a long list of things — which isn’t that long compared to, say, the White Sox — I’ll just say these are really bad. Really, really bad. I think the bright red logos and numbers make it worse. Help a fella out and please burn these, Mr. Redlegs. — Bryan

Here’s another PS-type thing: Gary Hall Jr. wore a cape before the 50 free at the Olympic Trials in Omaha. Did not qualify. Whoops.

Someone asked late last night about the color of the Coast Guard hats in the Twins game. They were a dark royal with red lettering. On the last link I provided the guy at far right in dugout celebration photo is wearing one. Navy and Air Force were slightly different shades of navy, yes.

Someone asked about seeing an FDNY hat. I thought I did, too, when I first surfed into the game. Was on someone in dugout. But didn’t see it again, so figured I was wrong, but if someone ELSE saw it…

In discussing the powder blue ’69 White Sox unis yesterday, I mentioned it showed really well on a super size Topps card. Found it…

When you actually see the card in person, the blue of the uni is really obvious. Computer scans always look like a TV with the brightness turned up a bit too far…and that loses color intensity.

Also, the SI cover with the White Sox navy ’70 hats (and the “guess” at the hat for the new Brewers).

Didn’t get a chance to post this yesterday, but in friday’s yankees-red sox game it appeared as though one of the red sox bat boys had on a “japan” jersey with the advertisement on the sleeve, did any one else notice this? I cought a glimpse of it when manny was at the plate, in the dugout behind him, not sure if there was a clearer view though.

Bucks Introduce Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, and this is what will be on the back of his jersey:

Hope this works. I am not good at inserting links.

    From the Lexington Herald Leader…
“UK continues to ponder how best to memorialize its long-time equipment manager, Bill “Mr. Wildcat” Keightley. He died this spring after having worked in the UK basketball equipment room since 1962.

“We’ve explored a bunch of ideas,” deputy director of athletics Rob Mullens said. “I don’t think we’ve come to any conclusions.”

The guess here is that UK will remember Keightley in two ways this upcoming season.

â–  The “K” in Kentucky on the jersey will be black.

â–  A “K” will be painted on the Rupp Arena court in front of the chair where Keightley sat during home games. (The idea of leaving a chair empty presents the potentially embarrassing situation of a coach or player accidentally sitting in the chair.)”

I don’t know, Bryan, I’m going to have to disagree you. I think the Reds’ threads from last night look pretty sharp. I may be in the minority, but I don’t think they’re that bad.

I will agree with you Bryan, the Red’s Unis looked awful to me. Perhaps I’m biased because I see these supporting the troops motifs in society recently being used as a call to support the war, which I completely disagree with.

Or perhaps It’s because I’m a quaker and disagree with war, period, and this seems to be promoting war, any war. Give vets tickets at discounts, sure. But please don’t broadcast it like that. “look at us, aren’t we generous?”
And they probably make a pretty penny from those jerseys…

gary hall’s cape also said “the godfather of swimming” on the back. pretty normal for him. he has also worn a boxing robe up to the blocks in the past.

From Thebiglead.com (a great sports media blog FYI)

Next to a picture of federer and nadal

“Do you know how difficult it is to find a photo of Federer and Nadal that isn’t drowning in swooshes? The men’s Wimbledon final just begun. Hopefully, you’re watching.”

I just google searched, i sugest you try as well, its not easy

Those jerseys look pretty damn sharp. While I hope this doesn’t become a reoccurring thing, those uni’s look snazzy as hell.
gary hall’s cape also said “the godfather of swimming” on the back. pretty normal for him. he has also worn a boxing robe up to the blocks in the past.
“If Prince were a swimmer…”

Not real smart to hot dog it up if you can’t back it up. Maybe if this swimming thing doesn’t work (seems like a good bet) he plans to contact Vince McMahon.

WW..S? Cool, there’s nothing like a good swimming fight. Might be a tough sell, though, no turnbuckles in a pool.

I agree here. They don’t look atrocious like a lot of other promo jerseys do. For a once in a blue moon deal, I can live with the Reds camo.

Gary Hall has had a rather successful swimming past….he is one of the best freestyle swimmers in US history and has won around 10 medals. He is now in his upper 30s so the guy is just about done with his career. He has had a good share of good antics however….

More importantly, does anyone know if you can buy the stars and stripes hat the umps have been wearing?

I was sitting at a bar in the greater Cincinnati area last night with a couple of big Reds fans. Without my prompting, we managed to get into a discussion of the camo jerseys. Unanimous decision? Ugly as sin.

Also, and this might be a minor point, exactly where are they planning on blending in? The jerseys are lighter than desert camo (where the soldiers currently are) and lighter than woodlands camo (where Cincinnati would probably fit in the camo spectrum). Were they supporting troops fighting in some sort of speculative scrubland?

And, that has me thinking? Do any of the branches use this kind of camo? I remember the great Marine Corps. change to the computer-designed camo, and I thought the Army changed at some point. Admittedly splitting the hair rather fine, but does this camo resemble anything in current use by the soldiers they’re supporting?
Zito had some writing on his underbrim last night…

I think that might be a sticker from New Era; I thought I saw the Dodgers P with the same thing. Whatever, Zito should leave it there. After the first inning, he was almost unhittable. As opposed to the rest of the season, where I could walk up there and get a base hit with one hand on the bat.

What’s the point of camo jerseys if you have red numbers which make you visible a mile away?

I’m glad they had the bright red numbers because I wouldn’t have seen them from my seats at the top of the stadium. I have a couple of homemade vids from the game, and the more I watch them, the more I find the uniforms kinda ugly.

Side note, Nats were still wearing their American Flag hats while the Reds went with normal red hats.

Another side note: Last night was Ken Griffey, Jr, camo jersey giveaway night. My issue was that the giveaway jersey had a different, and much uglier, camo pattern on it.

I don’t know, Bryan, I’m going to have to disagree you. I think the Reds’ threads from last night look pretty sharp. I may be in the minority, but I don’t think they’re that bad.
I think that the Reds camo look fine. A tad on the unusual side, but fine. I do wish that the camo look would be left to the Padres, since San Diego is so integrally tied to the military base that is there.
Found this article on NFL.com about players in unfamiliar jerseys…

    link

From that: “SAN DIEGO, CA – OCTOBER 9: Quarterback Joe Montana #16 of the Kansas City Chiefs under center against the San Diego Chargers during an NFL game at Jack Murphy Stadium on October 9, 1994 in San Diego, California. The Chargers defeated the Chiefs 20-6. (Photo by Kevin Terrell /NFL Photos)”

NFL.com does that stupid shit all the time. There’s very little attention to frigging detail on that site.

I am going to have to go ahead and agree with the minority here. I think those Reds camo’s looked pretty sharp compared to other camo promotions in the past.

I don’t really like the Reds camo but it’s not too hateful. They’re wearing them again today.

Ahh, Ricko – you’re not alone in thinking those photo’s show blue flannel instead of grey. I’ve heard it before – but – it’s the photo’s. We need a camera expert to jump into the discussion. I can only describe it as “crappy” color. Don’t know what they did, but we all know that Topps were notoriously free with the airbrush back then.
So, you checked this out, right: link
The photo is from a reputable baseball photography site. How do you explain the 69 MLB patch on a grey uni? It appears the photos on this site are of a much higher quality than the typical Topps card from that era.
As for the SI cover – that’s just plain wrong. It’s practically black. So are some other blue hat in the pic: Angels, Twins, Tigers, Braves… Again, crappy color.
You sure you didn’t see the Sox in 68?”:
    link
It’s powder blue. And navy. Ehh? Ehhhh?
The other site I mentioned yesterday, Chicago Baseball Photos, is temporarily closed. Too bad, it’s really great.

The Reds camo jerseys look hideous.

There has to be a better way of “saluting our troops” than that. Those jerseys were embrassing.

I hope that they are only a one-time thing.

It’s a swoosh-fest to be sure @ Wimbledon, but I simply cannot believe the tension. Fed down two sets to love…..and now they’re in the fifth.
    Simply unreal.

Here are some photos of unis worn in Saturday night’s Negro Leagues tribute in Milwaukee. The Brewers are the Milwaukee Bears. The Pirates are the Pittsburgh Crawfords.

Purely on a superficial level, I root for Federer over Nadal on the dignity vs. douchebag appearance scale.

We get it Nadal… you have nice guns…wear some sleeves already.

I left a post about Alfredo Griffin, first base coach of the Angels, wearing a right-handed batters helmet while on the field.

    I did find a picture (#4):
    link

I think most other base coaches wear flapless hats…

Sorry if this is a repost…

RE: Off-Color Curtain Calls: Chargers’ unis look better than their current incarnations (I like the Bengal punching the OL). Ditto: Falcons, Jets, Rams and 49ers. Chiefs are among the classiest. Always have been, always will. Giants were in their silly period. Old Bengals unis better than present, but I like the first generation of Bengal stripes.

Here is a shock to see, the Astros are actually wearing road grey’s today instead of their brick red jerseys.

During Saturday’s Reds game, Kent Mercker was in the booth for an inning. He was asked whether players are affected by the different uniforms during throwback or other special occasions and he said no.

Mercker then briefly mentioned that he played for the Red Sox during the Turn Ahead the Clock promotion. The announcer had no idea to what he was referring and changed the subject.

Watching the Phillies-Mets game. Oli-Perez just had the whole first half of his shirt unbuttoned after the 7th inning. Interesting to see the NY symbol in the middle of his chest on his undershirt when you could barely read his jersey. Not too happy with the game, Phils offense is getting killed. But that was interesting.

No swoosh evident on Nadal’s warm-up jacket? Huh?
PS- McEnroe said to Federer, “Gimme a hug.” I kid you not.

The Titans will mostly wear their light blue jerseys at home next season according to The Tennessean. Mmmmmmmm, Oilers-esque.

The camo jerseys, aside from being profoundly ugly are a fairly fascistic attempt to militarize every aspect of our society.

(Hold on one sec, I need to adjust my soapbox)

Seriously, it’s the Fourth of July (actually it isn’t even the Fourth anymore), Not “Honor the Troops” day. Want to honor them? Don’t dress up ballplayers in “camo” — bring them home. Give them half decent medical benefits. Don’t stop-loss them. That sorta thing.

Even if the camo jersey’s were aesthetically pleasing (they’re not), the whole enterprise is so offensive/hateful it makes me want to scream

And while I’m at it, the flag hats are godawful too.

    The end. Selah

    (Getting off soapbox)

the reds camo jerseys were wrong…just plain wrong…and i believe the reasons why they were wrong have all been stated, but not in one place…to wit

    1) july 4th (or the entire weekend, it now seems) is NOT a celebration of our troops or military or anything else remotely warlike, imho…it is a celebration of our independence from britain (albeit it took a ‘war’ to do it)…as others have said, do it AF or mem day

    2) what bizness do the reds have (other than honoring the troops/military, which is wrong [see #1] on this weekend)…are there a lot of military bases in cincy? shouldn’t that gig be best left to the fathers (and even that’s a bit much)

    3) RED on camo? WTF? i know you need to know what player is who…but c’mon…if the camo is to ‘blend in’ or camouflage oneself…don’t the friggin red numbers/letters defeat THAT entire purpose??? jesus freaking christ

    4) it’s just plain ugly…i don’t know all that much about the fatigues our military (and/or hunters, gatherers and paintballers) wear…but someone said it’s not even appropriate for the greater cincinnati area

    5) one positive effect…i LOVE cincy’s font…and the camo jersey surely did make it stand out even more than usual…it’s a shame they had to ruin shit with the camo to begin with

    6) whitesawks suck too…just not as much

    oh yeah…pretty good tennis too

Padres’ camo is kinda cool because of the Naval base there and Camp Pendleton nearby. And because they originated the idea.

For other teams, though, it’s become a little too monkey see, monkey do.

Hopefully this is the last year we’ll see camo anywhere other than San Diego.

    Sophie

    Bryan,

I’ve got to agree with you about some of these jerseys. Specifically, the 1999 ones and the hide-and-seek jerseys of this weekend. However, by-and-large, I’d say that the Reds have come up with some of the nicest uniforms in baseball too. Especially, in the early days (although that could have just been because they were in the uniform groove long before anyone else).

    Some examples:

1907- A stunning home design: link

    1911- Another C that I fancy: link

I would love to help ya out LI Phil but:

    A) I am not that good with image editing

    B) I am still in shock that my Brewers might have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time (and only 3rd time in history) since 1982.

Come on now, fellas. Who doesn’t love an unsolicited political diatribe in a completely inappropriate place?
Doesn’t MLB’s actions (creating uniforms for a political/jingoistic/humanitarian purpose, given their donation of profits) invite an opening of that Pandora’s box?
In a word, no. It’s quite a wild leap from “salute the troops” to a “fascistic attempt to militarize every aspect of our society.”
As someone who didn’t like the promotion, I planned on not going to any of the games or buying any of the merchandise. I am more than capable of making any dontations directly without buying ugly hats.
And that’s certainly your prerogative. I can only wonder, though, just how ate up and with what does someone have to be to not be able to enjoy a baseball game because they don’t agree with the team’s (or in the case of the caps, the league’s) supposed socio-political statement, which consists of–oh, the horror!–bringing attention to those serving in the military and raising money for vets.

HA! Good one Phil! But seriously, comment #52 is what has become typical yellow-box mentality. This entire forum is based on our individual thoughts, opinions and observations. So, even if you are the owner or intern, you shouldn’t act all shocked when one of your opinions might be questioned or challenged. I’m sure we could go through all MLB teams and find a uni or two that the team is probably less than proud of.

I think those are Seattle Mariners hats, with the stuff on the brim that Uniwatch talked about a few weeks ago.

    Anyone agree or disagree?
they’re PILOT hats, including the scrambled eggs on the brim, not mariners…

but yes…SI was guessing WHAT the new brewer hat was going to look like since seattle had been moved/was in the process of moving to milwaukee at the time that cover was assembled…or rather, the franchise formerly located in seattle was going to milwaukee
That franchise relocation from Seattle to Milwaukee happened unbelievably close to the start of the season. One story at the time was that after spring training, the driver bringing the equipment, uniforms etc., from Arizona was told to go no further than a specific point and wait to be told whether to turn left for Seattle or right for Milwaukee. I can believe it, it was that last-minute.

That’s why the 1970 Brewers unis literally were the Pilots gear with the front lettering removed and replaced with Brewers lettering. And why hats were a simple, basic royal blue with light gold full block “M” (same “M” as Braves had when in Milwaukee).

Also is why Brewers’ colors began as royal and gold. Under the circumstances, they couldn’t do much else.

And how would explain the Canadian flag logo? It obviously wasn’t an Independence day hat for them.

That said, next year I say keep the logos, but let the teams use the regular hat color.

Wow… Jumping down someone’s throat for asking you to qualify a vague statement you made. Is this not a forum to discuss what individual people find aesthetically pleasing in sports uniform design and related issues? You might want to consider that not everyone shares your opinion, and at times might want to engage you in a debate on the merits of you assertions. Could the Camo pattern selected for the jerseys have been better? Probably Yes. Personally, I did not find anything wrong with the jerseys that were eventually linked. I do not read this blog excepting to totally agree 100% with every post. If you think about it how much fun would it be if we sat around and told each other how right we were all the time?
The giveaway associated with this promotion was actually sponsored by the U.S. Army.
I see no problem in an organization celebrating the holiday of our birth as a nation and our independence by honoring the men and women that devote their lives to insuring that very independence.
I’ve rambled on here far more then planned. So with that being said I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Wow, I have to say I was rather surprised to come home from vacation to see a nice attack on someone who did nothing more that ask you to elaborate on a statement you yourself made. If you would have added the links into your original post no one would have had to ask you what uniforms you did not like. In turn you would not have had to lash out like that.

I agree with the vests, they were ugly and I am sure almost every single Reds fan would agree with you. However, the way you went about addressing this was a tad out of line.

There is no reason to attack people Bryan, no one attacked you. I know there were rough times when you first took over the role but you should realize the majority of people who read this blog enjoy your additions along with Paul’s. The Bryan Bashers show up now and again but that is the nature of the internet, faceless internet tough guys reign supreme. You however should be happy that people are directly engaging you in YOUR opinion on uniforms, that should be a compliment to you.

To lash out and attack someone’s right to ask a question and then to go on and attack the team they support is out of line in my opinion, especially in a case where no one attacked you in the first case.

I will continue to read, agree and disagree with both your posts on here and Paul’s and that is the beauty of this site, it has always been an inviting place to engage in active conversation on uniform design. The second that the members on here no longer feel welcome though will be a sad day for both uniwatch readers and those who just love the aspect of design.

    Respectfully,

    David

I can hear the guy at the uniform company. “Okay, everybody, we gotta take all this stuff off and change it to ‘Brewers’, and we gotta hurry. Let’s see, we’ll have two “e’s”…so we’ll need some r’s, some w’s, some little s’s and some big B’s.”

Nah, but I’m sure they were told simply, “Change ’em all,” and not much more than that. So did it the same style.

And how would explain the Canadian flag logo? It obviously wasn’t an Independence day hat for them.

Canadian forces are serving in Afghanistan. As this ostensibly was a “support the returning veterans” promotion, it would be appropriate to honor those brave men and women.

Doesn’t any know that since these uni’s were sponsored by the US ARMY, then they must have gone through a rigorous approval process by the US ARMY? Who is anyone to judge the color of the camo, or the style based on the proximity of the team to a military base, when without a doubt the Army gave their OK?

They were different, and unusual, but all in all, a different look that I wouldn’t mind seeing every year for a game or two.

Definitely aren’t worse than the TURN AHEAD THE CLOCK unis from years ago.
