[Editor’s Note: Reader Mike Miller recently attended the the 2008 Carolina League/California League All-Star Game in Myrtle Beach and provided such a thorough report that I’ve decided to run it as a guest-written entry — enjoy. I’ll see you down at the Ticker. — PL]
By Mike Miller
The game took place at BB&T Coastal Field, home to the single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Here’s a rundown on the visual aspects of the game.
Batting Practice Jerseys. Nothing too remarkable here. Carolina League, as the home team, had powder blue — err, Pelican blue — jerseys with gold and navy trim and “Carolina” across the front. The design was straight out of the current MLB BP jersey template. (Yes, that’s Roger Clemens’ kid Koby in this shot.) Many of the players had BP jerseys with different numbers than their game uniforms, so I think the jerseys were pre-numbered then had nameplates added when the rosters were finalized.
The California League BP jerseys were similar, except with navy blue as the primary color and “California” across the front. Their numbers were three-layer, with powder blue, then white, then gold. Both leagues’ BP jersey had the all-star logo on the left sleeve.
Game Uniforms. The Carolina League got everyone to wear home whites. The California League couldn’t meet the challenge, with half of their players wearing a colored alternate instead of the road grey.
A few cool and weird tidbits:
• Wilmington probably has the only gold front number on a white uniform of any team in baseball.
• The Stockton Ports, which are an A’s affiliate, go with white cleats, just like the parent club (but they don’t all wear stirrups).
• Although Myrtle Beach wears powder blue caps at home and on the road, they have black batting helmets. I was told that helmet manufacturers don’t make helmets in powder blue and that the team basically didn’t want to pay the money to paint them all that color.
• The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have a fissure across their cap bill.
• Salem’s jerseys are faux vests (white jerseys with black sleeves). Compare them to the real deal here.
• Winston-Salem, a White Sox affiliate, have White Sox sleeve patches.
• There were a few quality stirrup sightings. The best was Sean Doolittle from Stockton.
Field Markings and Stadium. The logo they painted behind home plate was not the actual all-star logo, but a watered-down version (the full version is much more detailed, with a palmetto tree and crescent moon, which of course are taken from the South Carolina state flag).
The grounds crew had some nice touches, outlining the home plate area and coaching boxes in red, white, and blue, plus they painted each league’s name in the coaching box closest to that team’s dugout. And before the game, the crew put down a stencil of the Pelicans’ “MB” cap logo of behind home plate. So after they watered that area, the logo was clearly evident.
The stadium has a “beach area” down the left field line, where folks can watch the game from beach chairs. They even have a few lifeguard chairs for good measure. Since the main scoreboard is in left field next to the outfield bleachers, they put in a manual scoreboard on the right field foul line so the bleacher folk and beach-dwellers could actually see the score. It’s got to be one of the largest flip scoreboards in history, like the ones you used in gym class. The poor ballboy (blue shirt between the B and S) has to get up after every pitch to change the count.
Some cool things around the concourse too, including a list of every Pelicans player who’s made it to the majors and each year’s Opening Day lineup.
Finally, the gift shop had a heat press for those who wanted a personalized jersey. It got some work while I was watching.
Uni Watch News Ticker: A little birdie informs me that SMU, now being coached by June Jones, is returning to traditional white helmets, and that the new uni “will look similar to throwback Bills — royal jerseys and white pants at home, solid white on the road.” Can’t show any photos yet, but I can tell you it looks pretty hot. Official unveiling to come in the next couple of weeks. ”¦ Joe Alexander loves No. 11 so much that he might not play if he can’t get that number (with thanks to Josh Exine). ”¦ Pink caps are getting bashed in Boston. ”¦ John Blatchford recently attended the https://www.ishof.org/”>International Swimming Hall of Fame in Florida and sent along some photos (look here, here, here, and here). Lots of info on their current “History of Swimwear” exhibit is in this PDF. ”¦ Some interesting uni-related content in this video clip about what the UGA baseball team does on an off-day. ”¦ Chris Warfford notes that Team Slipstream, in addition their argyle cycling outfits, “are going to have one of the most colorful team photos ever. They’ve got five national title-holders that will be representing their nations during the grand tours, and those riders will be allowed to wear kits that reference their national titles, in addition to the argyle. Of course, we haven’t seen the new kits with the Garmin logo (that will be resolved soon), but if the Giro d’Italia is any indication of the kits, very few colors will be left out of the team photo.” ”¦ Not sure if I’ve run this link before, but here’s a good site for UK soccer kits (with thanks to Patrick Murray). ”¦ I just scored this nifty old uniform ad. “Preferred by the leaders of Boyville” — how totally great is that?! ”¦ Totally love this label (which is on this old uniform). ”¦ The Western Michigan White caps are going to wear Star Wars uniforms on Saturday. ”¦ Footwear observation from Brian Jud, who writes: “I noticed the SportsCenter commercial with Pierce, Garnett, and Allen shows them wearing road jerseys with white sneakers, when everyone knows the Celtics wear black sneakers on the road. More details here. ”¦ Sartorial justice: Maria Sharapova and tuxedo-themed Nike outfit were beaten yesterday by Alla Kudryavtseva, who later said, “I don’t like her outfit. It was one of the motivations to beat her” (good find by Brinke Guthrie). ”¦ You know how UMich always wears special shoulder logos for bowl games? Here’s an article on the company that puts them on the jerseys. ”¦ Bill Sour was watching the 1984 film Supergirl, which includes a scene in an abandoned amusement park. “I did a double-take when I saw a bunch of bumper cars with NFL helmets on them. After further review there it was, an NFL-themed amusement park ride [additional pics here and here]. I’d kill to find one of these old rides.” Very cool, but they got the Falcons’ logo backwards. ”¦ “George Shinn had wanted to own an NHL expansion team in Raleigh, but got pushed aside in favor of Felix Sebates, the NASCAR owner,” writes Tris Wykes. “So he came to Hampton Roads and whipped up ticket and suite deposits and civic interest in his proposed team, the Rhinos. They were in the hunt before being turned down by the NHL in January of 1997. There were billboards and T-shirts and Coke cans with the Rhinos logo. The character’s name was Rhocky.” ”¦ By now most of you have seen the Timberwolves’ new logo (which continues the NBA’s odd practice of including a basketball in the vast majority of its logo designs). According to this article, they’ll be unveiling a new uni set in August. … “Sometime last year, I sent along the only unearthed picture of Auburn sporting the hideous orange jerseys from 1979-82,” writes Kris McInnis. “But I was doing some attic shuffling and have found a few more good color shots from a couple of old university yearbooks. I can’t imagine there’d be anymore of these laying around that are actually in color. These shots differ from the original one I sent along, as most feature striped sleeves that are not seen on the tear-a-ways.”

– The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have a fissure across their cap bill.
I like that touch. It is unique without being too over-the-top or flaky, much like the Angels’ halo caps.
Thank God, don’t think I could have handled an NHL team being named ‘The Rhinos’.

That would have been horrible.

Wow! I’m life long Auburn fan and an Auburn grad and I’ve never seen those orange jerseys pics. The first one is the reference shot whenever they come up in any of the University’s print materials. In fact, the only real game-used orange I had seen to this point was one of the tearaways on display in an Auburn restaurant. The sleeve stripes make them look a little less like no-contact jerseys.
Not sure if I’ve run this link before, but link a good site for UK soccer kits (with thanks to Patrick Murray).

In the early years of Arena Football League 2 (Arena Football’s developmental league), there was a team in the league called the Carolina Rhinos. Wonder if there is any connections there between the two…

Great, but why does the Navy need a camouflage uniform? SEAL teams I understand, but a cook on an aircraft carrier not so much.
I really like the pelican blue Carolina jerseys, but that stupid Minor Leagues logo below the collar really throws off the balance. Those things only avoid looking bad on NNOB jerseys.

When I first saw the lead picture and the link first baseman, I’d thought the Cubs had gone back to playing minor league baseball! Then again … the last couple weeks …
Anyone notice that Pete Orr is listed as Peterson Orr on that Pelicans board of players who made it to the show? I don’t think I’ve ever seen Peterson as Orr’s first name in any media guide, playing card, or game program. He plays for the Nats now.
Is this a new logo for the Heat? I haven’t seen it before.

Wilmington probably has the only gold front number on a white uniform of any team in baseball.
This is going back a few years, but the East Carolina Pirates baseball unis were based on the Dodgers template. On the front they had “Pirates” in purple with the number in gold without any piping or trim outline. You really had a hard time distinguishing some of the numbers after you realized they had numbers there.
Pardon me for asking, but last night during the Yankees-Pirates rain delay they ran a “Top 50 Oddest Moments” or something on FSN. One of them featured a player completely jumping over the pitcher on his way to the baseline.
Last week we had the “Pelicans” vs. “Rainbows” game and I remember reading that the MLB lets white on white play each other.
In the game from the blooper, it was the Dodgers and Royals, and they were wearing the same blue jerseys. Is this allowed as well? It REALLY made it hard to discern who was who. I think they both wore white pants.
The Rhinos have the same colors as the San Jose Rhino’s of the old roller hockey league.

Today in my office, a lot of people are wearing either Cubs or Sox jerseys/shirts/hats for a company-wide “let’s boost morale” day.
(My morale is too low to be boosted.)
Anyway, I was talking to someone with a Cubs t-shirt on, and instead of the (R) next to the logo, it was a TM. He said it was an official product (“It had the hologram,” he said), but I’m not so sure.
Has this been discussed already?

Whoa … ADD post of the day …
Dodgers and Royals? Like the MLB (Major League Baseball) teams? With white pants, and lack of interleague play since powder blues were semi-standard, I’m guessing that must have been spring training.

Michigan hasn’t worn a shoulder logo for bowl games since the 2004 Rose Bowl. And I don’t really know why that is. I always liked that little tidbit every season… The really vanilla bowl patch gets so terribly boring.
as for those football bumper cars. I would venture to guess that they just had one decal for both sides of the helmet which is why the Falcons decal is backwards. it looks like the Bucco Bruce decal on the Bucs helmets is also backwards
Is it just me, or do the California League BP jerseys look like the Nuggets’ dark blue alts?

I think the bowl patch thing has gotten so corporate that it’s become standardized. The Rose Bowl probably didn’t want Michigan’s shoulder logo to take away from the corporate sponsor’s patch. Similarly, Penn State never used to wear bowl patches at all, but no longer has any say in the matter.

Watch out for the ones with stripes really high and stirrups really low. Those are more for old style football unis with kneehighs under white crew-type socks.

re: SMU unis…
Ah, the Eric Dickerson/Craig James era.
Great looking unis. Very classic.
Hope they dont’ mess with that look too much, and that they wear white shoes, too.
Going even further back than Dickerson/James, to the red helmet SMU era, I remember a college telecast back when Jerry Levias was their offensive star. Announcers called the Mustangs the “Ponies” the whole time. Wasn’t til third quarter it dawned on me that Chevrolet was the sponsor, and Ford’s hot new Mustang had been on the market for a couple model years.

Yeah, ebay really potluck. A few years ago some guy was selling assorted striped stirrups in punches. I bought a couple lots from him. About half them I had no use for, but the others definitely made it worthwhile. Just gotta keep hangin’ around, I guess.

Am I imagining things, or is #50 from Winston-Salem (Kanekoa Texeira, according to their roster) wearing a hand-me down Sox jersey from late 2001?
They misspelled Zach Miner’s (it’s not “Minor”) name on the big board of players from MB in the majors.
I was noticing the unusual number of MLB games today and assumed there must be a double-header. Turns out, it’s a very unusual one. Game 1: Mets @ Yankees; Game 2: Yankees @ Mets. This article

Do teams normally change their uniforms between games of a double-header? (e.g., home to alt) I would assume they don’t normally change from home to road.
Aren’t they playing this double header one game in each stadium? I’d imagine they’ll switch, because I think teams normally do. Usually it’s just from a standard issue to a BP, from what I’ve seen.

Minneapolis Millers and Saint Paul Saints always did that a least once a year. A day-night double header split between two cities. I know MLB doesn’t include double headers on the schedule at the start of a season – I believe it’s only been done to make up for rainouts, as is the case today – but I’d LOVE to see this as a regular thing. A’s and Giants are close enough play a day/night double header, LA Dodgers and Los Angeles/Anaheim/California Angels of Anaheim are close enough too.

I know MLB doesn’t include double headers on the schedule at the start of a season – I believe it’s only been done to make up for rainouts, as is the case today – but I’d LOVE to see this as a regular thing. Milwaukee and Chicago might be able to pull it off. First game would have to start awfully early, though.
Dodgers/Angels?
Giants/A’s?
I’d say with LA traffic, it would be easier to pull off Dodgers/Dimondbacks!

Certainly possible. I didn’t get close enough of a view to tell what color the pinstripes were, but they do appear to be black. If it is, they replaced all the other logos and numbers (Warthog logo on front, green number on back, MiLB logo on back) leaving just the White Sox shoulder patch.
Thanks for the kudos. I do have to give a bit of credit to the Myrtle Beach Sun News, who I “borrowed” some of the pictures from. If it’s really close up and well taken, it’s probably from them. During the game I was in the 2nd row of the outfield bleachers.

I hate to post the same thing two days in a row, but these were my feelings when someone brought up the pink hat thing yesterday:
I have a general problem with this article. Now, I consider myself SOMEWHAT a traditionalist when it comes to caps. I think, for example, that there are way too many inane fashion caps with the Yankees logo slapped on them. On the other hand though, I own several hats that other UW readers would find stupid. My point is that opinions like that are generally all relative. So, how can the extent of someone’s fandom be judged on what type of team cap they wear? And believe me, I’m a lifelong Yankee fan, and have been an NE Patriots fan since I was 7 (in ‘94/’95) so I know all about bandwagon fans, I just don’t think that someone’s cap denotes whether they’re a “true fan” or not.
And FTR this comes from someone who hates the pink caps/jerseys.
BTW, as far as Yankees/Mets goes, the Yankees change to their road uni’s, and the Mets will change to one of their like 9 acceptable home uniforms.

Dodgers and Royals? Like the MLB (Major League Baseball) teams? With white pants, and lack of interleague play since powder blues were semi-standard, I’m guessing that must have been spring training.
Correct again Paul. According to “Dressed to the Nines” anyway.
They show the Mets as going to the black/blue road cap full time in 2001. The SNY boys stated that this is the first time they have worn a blue cap on the road since 1997, which would be 11 years.
Either way, it looks sharp and should be the full-time look.

The White Sox don’t wear that shoulder patch on the home uniforms, just on the road and alternate ones. In 2001, there would have been a “Comiskey Park” patch on the sleeve, but no “diamond sock” logo.
For stirrups, your local uniform supply shop should have catalogs you can order from – companies like Twin City Knitting and Trenway can make anything that you want, as long as you order a dozen.

That’s some really odd bartering going on there in the animal kingdom.
Kind of off-topic, but I went into Lids yesterday (to look for the Star and Stripe Yankee Cap, which weren’t in yet) and found the All Star BP/HRD Caps. Maybe it’s just me, but I like the Clippers unis. I used to think they were old and boring, but after other teams have come out with awful designs I have learned to appreciate simple. If you notice the newer NBA unis are more simple/traditional than their predecessors (ex: Jazz, Grizzlies, Raptors, Bucks). Any news on if the Wizards are going to get rid of their unis? They are brutal. Their alt. jerseys are ugly, but in comparison they are beautiful.

My bad. I guess I reasoned that because I was talking about adidas in that context that people would understand I meant stripes that were straight (not swirling, undulating or twisting) as in the geometric concept of the shortest distance between two points.
And, yes, while those Oregon hoop unis technically have stripes, they might just as easily be described as something like “swirls” or “curved bands”. But no one ever said Joe Montana’s 49er sleeves had three “swirls”.
I really don’t want to argue, so I’ll amend my earlier notion (and take responsibility of under-explaining it in the first place) that Nike’s core theme for uniform design looks like it could be (not is; “could be”): If possible, in any re-design avoid straight lines parallel with, or perpendicular to, other design elements. From a design standpoint it is not difficult to envision that central philosophy…and it would be a really interesting one at that, but it’s SO tough to put into words. In general design-speak it would be something like “organic” as opposed to “structural”. Lines and shapes flow, they don’t go directly from here to there.
Am I making it more clear, or just muddying it up?
And again, I do NOT hate Nike. I like some of their designs, hate others.I just couldn’t figure out what they were up to, couldn’t find the common element, but now I kinda understand. And it will be interesting to see what they do from now on.

As seen in that video, the players are being interviewed in front of the new jerseys. Not significantly different, but the outlining is gone from around the letters (as seen on the left). I think it looks terrible amateurish. Yuck.

I’m reading you loud and clear, Ricko!!!
Sometimes, they have been less than discreet with their designs:
link
link
I’m not sure the reasoning for some of the changes on the scout uniform.
As far as being more functional in the outdoors, they seem to have gotten that one right, but why the color changes?
If it was to make the scouts wear them more often, I think that having clothing colored in a way that it resembles no other and no one but guerrillas would wear is a bad move. Guerrillas want to blend into their surroundings for a reason.
Most every other world scout organization but the Boy Scouts of America has figured out that more vibrant colors are the definite way to go.
Think about it this way, you dont see a lady mutilate squeeze into any scout shirt besides the Cub Scout shirt that is dark blue.
Simply put, no one wants to wear these unless they absolutely have to. Not much motivation for a 10 year old to get behind the scouting movement.

I’m reading you loud and clear, Ricko!!!
Sometimes, they have been less than discreet with their designs:

Sometimes, the liberties that they take with their designs get them in trouble; as was the case with the original Nike Air Bakin, worn by Tim Hardaway.

The “Air wordmark was emroidered in a fashion that looked very similar to the name of the deity in the Muslim religion, I am unaware if it is blasphemous to type the name, so I will only refer to the figure!!!

The release of this shoe caused waves of discord with Muslims around the world, so that when the shoe was retroed this year, Nike changed the rear of the shoe to look like this:

hi,
are there any SABRmetricists out there who might have started to collect and compare stats such as, OBP of pajama players v. high socks, v. stirrups. I wonder if a statistical argument could be made claiming that one style would produce more runs per game than would another?
or is this the stupidest thing i’ve ever thought of?

I think it might all be relative…and no…nothing that is thought up on this board is stupid as long as you don’t use puns based on posters names…Walaitis!
But seriously, Like with golf, I heard a stat recently that even with all of the technologically advanced equipment that is now on the market for golfers…the average handicap has not changed very much over the past 50 or so years.
Johnny O or someone more knowledgable in golf might want to clarify that point!
But to study something like you mentioned, no it’s not stupid, Hell maybe it could become the topic for one of Paul’s columns!
And BTW, the mother of one of my 6 year old’ friends asked me today why baseball players look so sloppy today. I just had to chuckle.
Her husband, a huge Giants fan and I were looking through the commemorative Super Bowl SI at their house today, and as I was picking apart the uni-centric nuggets in each pic, she asked me the baseball question.
Needless to say, we’ll probably have two new readers soon!
BTW, you guys get a week off from me. My family and I are going to Cape Cod for about ten days.
I”ll probably check out a few Cape league ball games so I’ll try to compile as extensive a report as Our friend today did!!!

You are very right. The stat is right around 40 years, but close enough. The thing about golf, is that a lot has changed for the better as far as technology, and even fitness, but back in the day, golf course were much shorter in length, and the equipment, i.e. hickory shafted clubs, persimmon woods, didn’t allow the golfer to hit the ball as far as we hit it today, so the golfer could be more accurate. All golfers will tell you that hitting the ball further is not really “better”, because most of the time your further into the woods. Also, greens are much faster on the stimp meter that back 40 years ago. With slower greens, the ball does not break as much, making most putts straighter and therefore easier. I think that’s all I have to offer on that subject for now.
As a sidenote… Dany Heatley is playing at my golf course tomorrow, and Tony Romo played at a different course in my town today, so we are full of celebs in Janesville, WI!
I just got home and finally saw the highlights of this afternoon’s game.
I had no idea.
I saw this, and thought to myself, Is this real? Am I dreaming? Could it be? Finally, after 11 years of hoping?
YES!!
YES!!
YES!!
This was a sight to see, a thing of absolute beauty. A gorgeous, brilliant, classic look that has been missing for far too long, that I have personally been clamoring for ever since it went away after the 1997 season. Please, Charlie Samuels, make this regular and permanent. PLEASE.
I’m thinking of buying an authentic Yankees Derek Jeter jersey with the Yankee Stadium patch and ASG patch. I noticed jersey-joe.com has good prices. Has anyone ever bought a jersey from there? Would you recommend them?
He is absolutely legit!!!!!!!!!
plus one here-good stuff. Got in on half price nfl jersey sale this winter. wow.

nah i think thats just one of those made up fashion things. not an NBA fan- but when will those terrible Clippers unis get a facelift?
Maybe it’s just me, but I like the Clippers unis. I used to think they were old and boring, but after other teams have come out with awful designs I have learned to appreciate simple. If you notice the newer NBA unis are more simple/traditional than their predecessors (ex: Jazz, Grizzlies, Raptors, Bucks). Any news on if the Wizards are going to get rid of their unis? They are brutal. Their alt. jerseys are ugly, but in comparison they are beautiful.
I agree. I love the Clips uniforms. People call them ugly all the time, but I don’t get it. They have a charming clunkiness that really stands out against all these computer generated designs. And that aspect certainly fits the franchise. Although, maybe the other guy is right and they should get with the 21st century. Might be just what they need. (Yeah, right.) Anyway, royal blue and red is a great color combo which I don’t think anyone else has. Even the alt. road blues are neat.
Was at Pirates/Rays game earlier tonight. Danny Bautista made his Bucco debut and had “D. Bautista” on his jersey. Jose Bautista played third base and was without first initial.
Would have snapped a photos, but he was struck by a line drive and had to be taken out of the game
Surely, the M’s and the Daddies JUST DIDN’T GET IT!(TM)
No knit-in belts. Okay, we’ll give the Padres the benefit of a doubt with the black shoes. Everything else, spot-on.
