There was a ceremony of sorts in a league called the “WNBA” last night, during which three members of the US Olympic basketball team showed off their jerseys. If I could read their names, I’d tell you who those players were. At this point, it’s a total toss-up for the worst jersey element — keeping in mind the horrors that could be on the front — between the … umm, “graphic” on the back and the red letters.
Also on Saturday, the White Sox unveiled a new alternate cap. It’s easily the next phase in performance-enhancing materials. — Bryan
Now THIS would be a jersey to have.
Been looking at these for a long time on ebay, and one of these days…

It’s nice to see the US Olympic committee reaching out to our country’s blind community for help in designing the athlete’s attire.
Reminds me of those 3-D pop-out portraits we all stared at 15 years ago.
HAHAHA those are the most heinous jerseys I have ever seen. Maybe they were intended to add a feminine element to womens basketball?
Whoa Bryan! Don’t you remember? We can’t say things like that about women’s hoop players anymore. Next thing you know, somebody is going to be calling them nappy-headed hoes and I won’t be able to watch SportsCenter for two weeks.
“I found this backstage. An over-sized hat. It’s funny. It’s funny because it’s…uh…bigger than…uh…you know, a normal hat.”
As for those Frocks for Jock-ettes, wow do they suck big time. For the record, that’s Diana Taurasi, Seimone Augustus, and Cappie Pondexter, from left to right. And yes, since none of those women are Sue Bird, I probably know too much about the WNBA for my own good.
Does anyone remember the site Paul posted a couple months ago for an online store specializing in vintage Minor League replica jerseys? I want to get something, but I can’t recall the name of the site.

It’s like Christmas morning in Baltimore! As announced in the forum last night (post#65) the O’s are restoring “Baltimore” to the away jersey in ’09. Great story here explaining the importance to the city.

In the same game (Texas A&M- Florida, Women’s College World Series), the A&M third-base coach is wearing a blank maroon helmet, although college softball base coaches aren’t required to wear them. No pics, unfortunately.
I just saw the Visa Olympics commercial featuring Derek Redmond (link).
Of course, I recall his father famously wearing a link, which has been photoshopped out of the ad. I guess people have different opinions of the Nike brand, but in my opinion, that was a totally unscripted (unscriptable) moment and to remove some of the elements is to disrespect the moment… kind of like taking Craig Ehlo out of link.
I long for the day when women’s basketball and particularly the WNBA is no more. The game is boring, boring, boring. Any decent boys high school team would destroy a WNBA team. The media salivates all over the WNBA, but the fact is that if it was not for major $ subsidizing from the NBA, it would have folded long ago. The uniforms are awful, the game is awful, and now the Olympic jersies are awful. I hope we lose in the first round to Poland.

Excellent question … my suspicion would be as a kicker in the NFL. Haven’t there been a few females athletes at least try out for NCAA football teams?
It’s odd to think that of all the major sports, the “manliest” of them is where it appears a woman may fit in best.
griffey just had a nice uniform quirk as noted by the braves announcers.
Brian McCann just hit a homer to right field, and griffey never moved. except to tuck-in his jersey before the ball even landed in the stands.
Watching the Cardinals and Pirates today, and realizing that to go with their road grey “vests” (or sleeveless jerseys, since they’re really not vests), at least some players are wearing black-sleeved undershirts with grey torsos.
Any time they stand in positions other than arms straight down (you know, unusual positions like, say, raising their bats to swing), the grey torsos stand out loud and clear.
Sorry. No pictures (the concept of pulling out the digital camera, pausing Tivo at just the right moment, bringing the memory card down to the basement to the computer with the memory card slot, loading up the image, saving it to Flikr, and then posting the link here – WAY too much work on a lazy Sunday afternoon).

Why should Nike get a free advertisement courtesy of a non-athlete?
its not about nike getting advertising, its about showing what really happened.
its not about nike getting advertising, its about showing what really happened.
But it is about Nike getting advertisement. You think if Visa left the image the way it was and Nike saw that, Nike would not be calling Visa asking for money to use their slogans in the Visa comercial? The almighty dollar, even being as weak as it is, means a lot to these business folks…who woulda thunk it?

So glad to hear the O’s are finally putting Baltimore on the road unis. Now if they could only stop being so cheap and have the home and away batting helmets match the caps. Cincinnati Reds: extremely bizarre. Hats: home all red, away black brim. link except for coaches; coaches have black brimmed helmets to match the fielders’ caps.
Minnesota Twins: link all the time, even though road caps use the M logo.
San Diego Padres: link do not have gold SD. White instead. Another mismatch.
The Reds wore their Sunday-home-games red alt jersey today. This would be fine, except that they wore them yesterday (Saturday) as well. What’s going on here? I hope that they do not give in to the temptation to start wearing them so often that they become the norm and the regular jersey becomes the de facto alt.

i believe tony amonte’s wife, an olympic women’s hockey player for the US, once played for him on the LA Kings when he was injured.
Did anyone else see Nick Blackburn of the Twins in his after game interview? He got whacked by Abreu during the game and his post game interview he had a navy Washington Senators cap on instead of his navy Twins cap. It looked like the Twins former home had a subliminal surfacing in Minneapolis.

When did WNBA claim their game was a good as NBA? Or that they were some kind of NBA development league? Jeez, this lame discussion goes back more than thirty years to when Billie Jean King said, rightly so, that women never claimed they could compete with men, just that their game was as entertaining.
Now you’ll say the WNBA isn’t entertaining, and I won’t disagree. Why don’t guys enjoy the WNBA? Cuz it’s played were most of us play the game, i.e., below the rim. Not such a thrill watching someone do something we think we can do, however badly we may in fact do it. So much of NBA and NCAA men’s basketball, on the other hand, is played above the rim, where we go rarely, much less with the regularity their players do. Woman/Girls watch WNBA cuz it’s their game…and that’s where the league (somewhat like MLS) hangs its hopes: that enough of those who participate will watch/buy tickets to make it worth continuing.
So far, it hasn’t really worked out that way for either of them.
Now, with regard to the time ESPN and others devote to coverage of the WNBA, I feel that same way–even moreso–about auto racing and (this one I don’t get at ALL) poker.

well, since none of them are actually sports, at least not like cup stacking is a sport…
but seriously, great points ricko…i never thought about the ladies hoop in that it is basically below the rim (although…isn’t there one or two chicks who can dunk???)…but it’s a fair analogy…
funny you mention that the women’s game is the way we “athletes” are more apt to play…as a tennis player (and a decent one in my prime), i actually enjoyed watching women’s tennis (live) much more than the men because i always thought i could compete at that level…the men…fuggetabootit…fun to watch, but no way was that happening…
golf too…99% of us couldn’t compete with the women golfers, but we could prolly outdrive them…so we can somewhat relate…guys like phil, tiger, ernie…yeah right…it might look easy but they are snipers
but we can at least THINK we could play on a level the ladies hoopsters play at (plus, for the most part…we’re prolly almost as tall, if not taller…whom amongst us is 6’11”???)…
nice food for thought pre-mets/dodgers

The Durham Bulls(Rays AAA team) are wearing green sleeves with their vests today. Good thing they are also wearing green hats with cloverleaf on them in the field, bad thing, no green hats at the plate and still wearing blue leggings. hopefully can find picture tomorrow of it. 2 things…one new?…and one old
old: joe morgan is STILL a moron…tonight’s entry: jose reyes “not even close play” at second where he was actually out stealing (tho called safe)
new: is the “interlocking NY” on the back of the mets mound new? i just can’t remember seeing it before, but i haven’t been watching any of the games in this series…
also…NEVER wear the black & blue caps with the pinstripes…EVER…please…thank you

Amen.
Let ’em mess around with the plain white with piping, or even the road grays (because evidently they simply MUST)…but not the pins. Ever.
Keep that 1969 image (and the wonderful Stengel years; CAN’T ANYBODY HERE PLAY THIS GAME? by Jimmy Breslin is a must read) intact.
And here it is.
Any fan of baseball history, the Mets in particular, should take time for this one.
Funny, funny book.

Ya gotta believe in Marv Throneberry and Felix Mantilla, of course.
Is it just me, or do these jerseys look like something the Aztec civilization would have worn?
The Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League are sporting new home and road uniforms this year:

They look nice, somewhat similar to an old Kansas City Monarchs jersey, IIRC. The new Riversharks jerseys replace a more modern jersey Camden had sported.
Incidentally, while the Can=Am League is not mandating its coaches wear helmets in the coaching boxes, the Atlantic League is.

Please forgive me if it has been talked about… but a few days ago Paul posted in the ticker that the Brewers are shaming themselves by using the pitchers mound to advertise their web site, but in the past few games there has been a different logo on the mound, and I have been gone the past few days and just saw quick highlights and can’t make out what the logo in the “light dirt” is. Is it their “M” logo? Any help of photo evidence would be sweet.

OK, Kek, your tendency to disagree, vocally, with our host is duly noted. However, the vast majority of commenters say something to that effect.
I know C.N….. just keepin’ you honest!
Seriously though, I think you’re spot on about the double standard. Me personally, I call them as I see them, with both Paul and Bryan. I may dislike some things but overall I like a lot of the stuff that comes from this blog.
However, folks seem to have had it in for Bryan since his first post, or so it seems.
Paul takes his stance on topics like logo creep, pink/cancer awareness, Sean Taylor tributes and most are in agreement with him. The Uniwatch blog was the only place I saw any positive reaction from that hatchet job on Piazza recently too.
But everyone has their sensitivity hats on when Bryan posts the weekend. And for the record Bryan, I agree with you, that kid with the eyeblack did look like a clown!
There was an old timers game recently in Japan to honour a great submariner from the 70s and 80s.
