Yesterday was Mother’s Day, so MLB diamonds were awash in pink jersey ribbons, pink armbands (note how the Cool Base gussets ruin the pinstripes, by the way), pink-accessorized umpires, pink titanium necklaces, pink catcher’s gear, pink shoelaces, pink facial hair, and pink bats. I’d like to think that at least one stadium music director was enterprising enough to play the album shown at right (if you don’t recognize it, look here), but somehow I doubt it.
By now you know the drill: I dislike the pink-o-rama, Minna H. really dislikes it, and most of the rest of you are okay with it. Fine — let’s move on.
Fortunately, Mets announcers Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez provided an extended session of uni-related banter yesterday, and it was almost pink-free. Their discussion was prompted by the fact that the team’s local broadcast affiliate has been running an internet poll to let fans vote on the Mets’ all-time best uniform. Good poll, topic, right? Or it would have been, if they hadn’t limited the choices to very small sampling of the various designs the Mets have worn over the years. Anyway, the discussion was actually pretty good — let’s listen in:
Keith Hernandez: I know what my pick would be.
Gary Cohen: What is that?
KH: I love the Mets’ old road uniforms. We had to wear those darn ones with the handwriting. Remember, the “New York” handwriting?
GC: The script.
KH: I must say, I get jealous whenever I see this team out here, the present Mets, when they go on the road and play in the old-fashioned Met uniform. I never got to play in that uniform. They’re beautiful.
GC [who apparently either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care about black drop shadows]: They’re a classic. And I like this pinstripe, the one they wear now, as opposed to the one they wore right at the beginning of the Mets, which did not have the numbers on the front. It’s always a bit disconcerting to me to see the uniforms with no number on the front. But these are perfect.
KH [as the director cues up a 1980s shot]: There we go, look at that. I mean, please.
GC [who also apparently wasn’t listening to what Hernandez had said a few moments earlier]: Well, the worst ones were the ones with the script “New York.” Remember those?
KH: Look at that Astro uniform behind, there. That was a stinker. [Helpfully telestrates the uniform in question, just in case anyone is missing the point.] Look at that — what a stinker that was!
GC [chuckling]: But those were their traditional ugly uniforms. I mean, you have to admit, the late ’70s into the ’80s was the worst-ever era for baseball uniforms. Probably for fashion in general.
KH: The Padres had a terrible uniform. But I loved the Oakland A’s uniforms, with Charlie O. Finley. Ronnie [Darling] does not, our colleague.
GC: He didn’t like wearing the white shoes [when he played for the A’s late in his career]. But there was nothing worse than, say, the Chicago White Sox wearing shorts.
KH: Yes, and how about the Pirates in those bumblebee uniforms.
GC: But the Pirates had those interchangeable ones. They had the black, the gold, and the pinstripes, and they’d wear them in various combinations.
KH: They were awful, awful. Awful.
GC: Now, everybody today is wearing pink because it’s Mother’s Day. [Camera shows a shot of Cohen, who’s wearing a pink tie, and Hernandez, dressed in a pink shirt.] Maybe a team needs to go to an alternate pink uniform.
KH: Well, we’ve got to expand to more teams. Commissioner, we need one more team, and we’ll be in pink.
GC: I don’t think you really want that.
KH [about to get seriously stupid]: Why?
GC [alertly heading him off]: And then, of course — and you were part of this, too — you had the powder blue road uniforms, which you wore with th–
KH [interjecting]: I liked the powder blue with the Cardinals!
GC: Yeah?
KH: I have my powder blue at home, as a matter of fact. I have that uniform. Um, in 1980, the year Whitey Herzog took over the team — Ken Boyer was fired mid-season — that was when — you’re talking about the Mets not having the number on the lower side? The Cardinals that year took that number away, below the cardinal, and put it on our shoulder. [Actually, that was made a year earlier, in 1979, which you’d think Hernandez would remember — it’s the year he won the MVP award.] And the fans didn’t like it at all, so they went back to the traditional Cardinal uniform. Actually, the Cardinals — I think it was in the ’40s — one year they went to a uniform without the bird on the bat. [1956, actually.] And the fans went through the roof! And they came back the next year with the birds on the bat, which I think is just a classic uniform. As a minor leaguer coming up in the Cardinals organization, you were taught to have great pride in those two birds perched on the bat.
GC: Did they have names?
KH: No.
GC: Don’t you think they should, after all these years?
KH: Dizzy and Daffy?
GC: That’d be perfect. Gus and Gussie.
And then the discussion turned to, you know, things that were actually taking place on the field. All in all, not a bad discussion, and I give Hernandez credit for knowing that the Cards went birds/bat-less for one season. What’s more troubling is that nobody connected with the Mets — nobody — ever acknowledges the evil of the black drop shadows. The road and pinstripe uniforms are routinely referred to as “classic,” when in fact they’re bastardized versions of the originals. Pfeh.
Raffle News: Remember, I’m raffling off a free football helmet from Helmet Hut. To enter, send an e-mail here (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address) by 10pm tomorrow. One entry per person. But contrary to what I originally announced, enrollees in the membership program will get the customary three bonus entries per member (don’t send three extra e-mails — I’ll automatically put your name in the hat three extra times). My thanks to the several readers who argued, persuasively, that it was unfair to remove the raffle benefit. From now on, the extra raffle entries will be restored as a standard membership benefit.
Uni Watch Extra-Curricular Schedule: NYC-area readers may want to mark their calendars for May 29th, when I’ll be participating in an evening of readings at KGB Bar in the East Village. The theme is “Design and Food” (the latest in a bi-monthly series of design-related readings sponsored by the School of Visual Arts — past installments have included “Design and Evil” and “Design and Music”), and my presentation will focus on the design evolution of the butchery chart, a subject near and dear to my heart stomach.
One of the other readers will be the design critic Akiko Busch, who I’m told will be reading a piece she wrote about a vegetable peeler (wish I’d thought of that). And the third reader — not yet confirmed but I’m told he’ll probably be on board — is a genuine titan of the graphic design world, Milton Glaser! If you’re a design geek, like I am, you can imagine how stoked I am to be sharing a bill with him. Very cool.
The event will run from 7pm-9pm, and it’s free. Hope to see some of you there.
And then a week after that, on June 5th, the Camden Riversharks will be running their “Old-Time Baseball Night” promotion. The entire team will be wearing striped stirrups (I picked them out for the team myself just last week), and I’ll be throwing out the first pitch, plus there’ll be a special pregame gathering for Uni Watch readers. And all Uni Watch readers will be able to buy box seats (normally priced from $11 to $20) for $8 apiece.
Here’s how to take advantage of the discounted ticket price:
• First, go to this link. You’ll see the Riversharks’ May schedule.
• Then use the drop-down menu to choose “June 2008.” Once you’ve done that, click on the June 5th game. And then click on “Let me pick my seats from a seating chart.” You should then see a diagram of the Sharks’ stadium.
• See the teal seats right behind home plate, and the yellow seats extending down the baselines? All of those seats are available for the $8 price. Just click on the section you want and choose your tickets from the resulting “Eligible for Sale” seat listing.
• When you select your seats and click “Add to Cart,” the screen will initially show the regular ticket price. But when checking out, enter the promotional code “stirrups” in the appropriate field, and you’ll get the special $8 Uni Watch price. Whoo-hoo!
Uni Watch News Ticker: Check out Nick Swisher’s underbill inscription — it refers to his nickname, Dirty 30. ”¦ Speaking of underbills, many readers have noted that Bronson Arroyo is still using a gray model. ”¦ Bill Curran sent along some non-sports logos that probably should’ve gone back to the drawing board — look here, here, here, and here. ”¦ Follow-up on Thursday’s entry: Good info on silver-bar umpire masks here (with thanks to Neal Greenberg). ”¦ Nice little item on stirrups in the New York Times, complete with a photo-linked shout-out to yours truly (although I had nothing to do with he piece). ”¦ Here’s a new one: Several readers have noted that John Maine appeared to have his ears tucked into his cap the other day. ”¦ I haven’t been paying attention to the NBA playoffs, so I don’t know why Chris Paul has “Brian!” written on his sneakers, but I assume most of you do (photo courtesy of Chris Flinn). ”¦ Latest Shorpy gem: Check out those jackets being worn by the 1914 Philadelphia A’s (with thanks to Bob Andrews). ”¦ Honda F1 driver Rubens Barrichello had a special helmet design and car paint job for his 257th start on Sunday, which is the record for starts by an F1 driver (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Interesting discussion here about lacrosse officiating uniforms. ”¦ Good breakdown of Euro 2008 road kits here (with thanks to Max Rosenthal). ”¦ Creative use of baseball gloves here (blame Ryan Gray). ”¦ Interesting sleeve-patch dispatch from Jeff Barak, who writes: “Several sources, including Bill Henderson’s CD, list the Twins’ 25th-anniversary patch as having been worn in the 1985 season, probably because it has ‘1961-1985’ right on it. But I think it was actually worn in 1986. Here are some things to back that up: First is a game-worn 1986 jersey with the 25th-anniversary patch on it. Here’s another 1986 gamer, also with the patch. Next up is a 1985 Kent Hrbek jersey without the patch. And here’s a 1986 team-issued card set that features the same logo as the one on the patch.” ”¦ In sports, as in life, it’s important to not lose your head (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). ”¦ “I was flipping through channels the other day and saw the German Bundesliga game between Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich,” writes Jeremy Brahm. “Wolfsburg player Marcelinho dyed the Wolfsburg logo into his hair (here’s a closer view).” On other occasions, he’s dyed his hair red and Belgian-themed (which was a mistake — he wanted it to be German-themed but got the colors wrong). ”¦ Yikes. ”¦ “Looks like Nate Burleson is using those titanium elbow sleeves, popular among baseball players, as calf warmers,” notes Jonathon Binet). ”¦ Just what the world needs: a Gillette-sponsored zamboni, as seen in Boston (with thanks to William Sodeman). ”¦ Last Thursday I linked to this photo Randy Johnson wearing No. 34 in 1993 but didn’t explain why he briefly wore that number instead of his usual No. 51. The reason, as noted in this story, is that he wore 34 for his final start of the ’93 season as a tribute to Nolan Ryan, who’d suffered a career-ending injury a few days earlier (nice find by Matthew Buscemi). ”¦ If he hadn’t already been banned for other reasons, I’d say Pete Rose should be banned for having worn a mesh-backed cap (with thanks to Greg Riffenburgh). ”¦ Mark Mihalik notes that Kaz Matsui has some seriously padded baserunning gloves. “They’re basically this batting gloves with some crazy padding (similar to soccer goalie gloves) added to the palm and fingers, and they seem to slip over his normal batting gloves,” he writes. “I’m guessing that the first base coach keeps them handy until Kaz reaches base.” ”¦ Lots of good observations from Mike Engle: an undertongue-inscriped uni number; Albert Belle’s “50-50” batting glove vanity strap (presumably added after his 1995 season of 50 homers and 50 doubles); and Tony Parker’s “VII VII VII” ring finger tattoo (he was married on 7/7/07). ”¦ Douglas Mulliken notes that the “LA” cap logo in this photo appears to have been raised/3-D/etc., way back in 1977. Was this a common thing back then? I thought the raised cap logos didn’t start showing up until the 1990s. ”¦ Giants rookie Kenny Phillips is wearing No. 21 as a tribute to Sean Taylor (with thanks to Alan Kreit). ”¦ Jay Winkler notes that Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car has a throwback Mountain Dew logo. ”¦ Several readers noted that yesterday’s rain delay gave WGN an excuse to broadcast footage from Jim Maloney’s 1965 no-hitter, which provided excellent views of the Reds’ subscript NOBs. For those unfamiliar with this style, additional examples are shown on this page (click on the Nuxhall and Rose thumbnails). It’s also worth noting that reader Ryan Whitacre used this style as the basis of his membership card. ”¦ “I’ve never seen an E for a baseball player number,” writes Jeremy Brahm. “Hopefully it meant he was an everyday player, not an error on every play. The picture, which is from 1949, is of Hiroshi Ohshita, who played for the Tokyu Flyers at the time. ”¦ Also from Jeremy: Golfer Miho Koga has problems with pollen and has been wearing a mask on the course. ”¦ Still more from Jeremy: Marco Andretti’s car is being sponsored by the new Indiana Jones film, so they’ve designed a new driving suit for him. ”¦ And one more: “In 2005, Japan’s Environmental ministry promoted its ‘Team Minus 6%’ Global Warming Campaign, which led to a promotional jersey with minus-6 as a uniform number.” ”¦ Goaltender observation from Jim Neilly: “Marty Turco has been wearing two goalie helmets throughout the playoffs; a black helmet at home and a white one on the road. I can’t recall any goalie doing this before. What’s more interesting is that at some point this season he wore the black helmet with the white road sweater. So did he begin this helmet-swapping just for the postseason? Have any other goalies done this before?”
Carlos Zambrano supposedly had pink shoes for yesterday’s start. Unfortunately, due to the possiblilty of rain, the Cubs scrathed him from the start. I wonder what he will do with his shoes.
Don’t forget, Hernandez shared the MVP with Pops Stargell in ’79.
Chris Paul has BRIAN! written on his shoes for his biggest fan, who never took off his CP3 jersey, who died of cancer recently. His family burried him in his Hornets jersey. A truly touching story, and a kind act by Paul.

I read that Chris Paul wrote Brian on his shoes for a child that died of cancer before he got his wish – to attend Game 2 (?) of the Spurs series.
The Kenny Phillips article suggests that Phillips is wearing 21 with the Giants to honor (who else?) Sean Taylor. It just so happens that Barber was the last Giant to wear that number.

The 1991 Mets had the best uniforms.
I love that road uniform more than any other road they have had.
And also I think the black drop shadow is worse that the cool base underarms.

Actually, Ed Belfour did the double mask thing as well. Not sure if he did it in Chicago, but in Dallas he had a green mask and a gold mask with his customary eagle, while in Toronto, he had a blue mask and a silver-ish mask that he alternated.

Luongo did the double mask thing when Vancouver had those blue/green stick third jerseys. Had a mask for normal home/away, and a second helmet for the third jersey.

I wonder how upset Tiki and his Giant sized ego will be?
Not only was Dale Earnhardt Jr’s car sporting an old school Mountain Dew logo, but he got a specially designed suit and helmet for the event (suit still made by adidas, so watch for the triple stripe, which made its way to the helmet). The helmet it apparently supposed to look like it is the suit (stitching across it, as well as logos ‘stitched’ on).

Glad to see the post is back up after a couple hours in hiding.
I think CP3 writing the name of a fan that he never even met on his shoes shows that he is not only one of the best players in the league right now, but a stand up guy. Good guys don’t get nearly enough press, and screwups (Pacman, Vick, Chris Henry) get way too much.

I have wrote about the Turco mask thing on my blog, link The only other example that I could think of the comes to mind right away would be Roberto Luongo, who last season would wear his normal mask when the Canucks wore their white and darks, but when they wore their throwbacks, he had a special helmet.

FYI–
All of the Reds wore mesh-back caps in Spring Training in the late 80s. Marge Schott was too cheap to spring for real caps during games that didn’t count.
The link to the Kent Hrbek jersey goes to the previously mentioned #39 jersey, not a #14 jersey.
re: Reds’ subscript NOB’s from 1965. Braves also had those for that season–their last in Milwaukee–and perhaps before. It was when they eschewed tri-color piping for simple navy, and dropped tomahawk from chest logo, I believe. At first in Atlanta the only change to entire uniform was hat letter from “M” to “A”. Seems likely the subscript NOB’s might have survived, too, but can’t remember offhand. Anyone have Atlanta childhood memories about that?

Interesting. I still remember Jose Rijo’s 1986 Topps card had a photo of him wearing a mesh cap, and I never really knew why.
An observation: What is there to dislike about the pink gear? There are so few times in life when we all are on the same page, that an occasion such as getting in the spirit of things for cancer reasearch (or the coming poweder blue on Father’s Day re: prostate cancer) should be something to enjoy. It don’t happen that often, gang.
You’ve got to be right that the Twins wore the 25th anniversary patch in ’86. All the regular-season shots from the 1987 sets (which should be ’86 photos, though Topps has been known to go further back than the previous year) show the patch on the right sleeve. (Randy Bush Topps, Tom Brunansky/Kirby Puckett Fleer, Allan Anderson Donruss.)

Yup, meshbacks were not uncommon for spring training in the late 70s and into the 80s.

I assume they introduce new jerseys for the last game to jump-start off-season jersey sales.

Tottenham also trotted out their new kits yesterday. Love the socks!link
Portsmouth also debuted their new change strip yesterday – at home no less. It is white, so their opponents Fulham (who wear white) had to wear their change strip as well. Very strange to see two PL clubs in their change strips.
Ed Belfour had 2 diffenet masks with Dallas and Toronto, Home and Away masks to match the Jerseys.

“I’d like to think that at least one stadium music director was enterprising enough to play the album shown at right (if you don’t recognize it, look here), but somehow I doubt it.”
That might be one of the greatest albums ever recorded but there’s not a song on it that even resembles “stadium rock”. You just don’t hear a lot of wistful country-folk at the ballpark.

I actually like hockey … I don’t watch it on TV, but I like it. What my comment refers to is the disappointing decision to broadcast (oxymoronic word in this context) on a network that 95% of Americans couldn’t identify on their list of channels, even if given multiple guesses!

That “I can’t find VERSUS” arguement is the biggest bunch of crap. If you like hockey, or want to see it, you’ll find what channel it’s on. In this day and age of the Internet, if you want to see it that bad, you can. Maybe that’s not going to help with new fans, but the existing base of hockey fans can find the channel.
Sorry to be edgy about it, but hockey’s a great game. It’s better in person than on TV but it’s still good. I’m tired of ESPN setting the agenda on what sports are relevant and what ones aren’t simply by what leagues they carry.

Beautifully said. It’s not the only thing that’s done, but it’s an effective way to a) raise awareness, and, in the process b) raise funds. Think of the Spiderman 2 bases a couple years back. If they offend enough people, they’ll go away. It reminds me of my favorite old comic – Bloom County (now on life-support as “Opus”), when Opus the Penguin was asked about supporting causes, and someone asked his thoughts on nun-beating – “Dear GOD, I can’t support THAT!” … who could possibly be AGAINST raising money for cancer research?

Paul, speak for yourself! I love MLB’s gratuitous pandering to the distaff portion of the nation–and the large subsect, really, that does not watch baseball–with its splashing the world\’s worst color everywhere ‘in the name of breast cancer’, and then breaking an arm patting themselves on the back for it. It’s all gilding and no substance.
I would go on, but I have had this rant far too many times with no results. Besides, LI Phil said it much better in comment #67 than I would have.
P.S. I like hockey, and I still think Walaitis’s comment (#74) is the funniest one of the day. I now see (since I didn’t write in the damn anti-spam word) that Walaitis meant it the way I thought s/he did.
P.P.S. Kek, I don’t have a problem with bringing up an issue or selling merchandise to support said issue (although it is always better to put the money directly into the nonprofit’s pockets and not buy something)–I DO have a problem with the color pink being used to symbolize anything related to women and doing it on Mother’s Day. It’s lazy and, to me, is more of a ‘look at me’ thing than an actual effort to DO anything. How about MLB and teams across the league donate half the money of every ticket and concession sale to a breast cancer foundation? Or a coronary heart disease foundation since more women die from that than from cancer.
Again, this has been rehashed on this board before ad nauseam, but I think taking a black and white stance on the issue (either you whole-heartedly support something or you are whole-heartedly against it) is naive. There are many shades of gray in the issue, and just because someone’s view point may be different than yours, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Or right, for that matter.

I’m usually an NHL apologist, but there’s some merit to that criticism. At least three times during these playoffs so far, at the American Airlines Center before a Stars game, I’ve not only had to ask staffers in the bars and the Platinum Club to put Versus on some of the TVs so we could keep up with other games — which clearly would never happen if the games were on ESPN or Fox Sports — but I’ve actually had to inform them that Versus is on channel 79 on their local system.

Listen, all I’m saying is, I have a friend whose opinion on sports-related matters I respect greatly. He can’t get into hockey but is a big Celtics fan from back in the day. He admittedly strayed from the pro game a long time ago, but got back into this year because his team is doing good. He tells me the Celtics are real fun to watch, they play team ball, make the extra pass, blah, blah, blah.
So, being open-minded I give it a shot and watch Game 1 of the Cavs/Celts series. I was literally falling asleep. Had to go downstairs and hook my wii up and play some tennis to get myself revived.
There have been some really good playoff games in the NHL this year and it’s frustrating to have wake up in the morning and hear Mike and Mike prattle on and on about how great Chris Paul is and talk about golf but ignore what’s a really great game.
The bartender story is a sad one, but I have a friend living out of town right now and doesn’t have cable. he’s gone out to bars to watch just about every Pens’ game that has been on VS and hasn’t had any problems.

Agreed, but I’d go further than that. Versus wasn’t even offered by my cable company until they got bought out by Comcast last month, and it’s $10 a month(for one F’n channel!), to find a parallel, I pay $4 a month for the Fox Soccer Channel. Not to mention that I can watch 90%(ish I’m guessing here) of all WHite Sox games on 3 local channels, 90% of all Packers games on Fox or CBS, so how exactly is ESPN ruining our opportunity to watch sports. I’m a caual NBA fan once the Bulls were eliminated, but I’ve seen at least 5-6 games this offseason, why because their easily accessable. It’s the NHL itself that sealed their fate when they signed that ignorant deal with Versus, you’re mad at the wrong people.
… A couple things:
1) I can’t for the life of me figure out the constant chatter about the White Sox’ bermuda shorts from everyone who talks about jerseys, considering that the Sox wore them in about 3 or 4 games total, and there’s only a faded photo or two or a scratchy video to prove it. You’d have thought that the Sox wore shorts for a decade.
The jersey style and lettering font the Sox used in the late 70s was one of the most unique and innovative in the history of modern uniforms. It’s a shame more people don’t talk about THAT fact, instead of going on and on about “the shorts”. It’s cliched.
2) I think the linked Ron Davis jersey is from 1985, not 1986. The Twins had NOB in 1986, but not 1985.

If I was Bud Selig, the first thing I’d do is remove the ban on Rose and Shoeless Joe.
… If he were to remove those bans, he would be (in effect) saying, go ahead and bet on baseball, guys. No problem! Accept bribes to throw World Series games, too. We’ll still put you in the Hall of Fame!
Wait?!?
A black puck on a white surface vs a white ball in a light blue sky and it’s the first one that need some stupid glow around it?
TV executives are weird… :)
More on the Turco thing, he did the same thing last season. Based on my research, he has had more than a half dozen masks in his career on the Stars. Last season he wore a golden one with his white sweater, link
He also wore the same design with black instead of white and gold
link
This season he has two again as well, as Paul had pointed out. The one he wears with the black one is called Armour Gargoyles of Gold and the white one is called White Sky Gargoyles. They are almost the same design with a couple of differences. The first picture of the white helmet I could find was from Jan. 29. So maybe it wasn’t ready until then.

Minna, I forgot to say this regarding pink. This isn’t about the cancer thing, but just fashion merchandise in general.
My wife hates….I mean HATES, the way the major sports leagues pump out these pink jerseys and hats with team logos on it. She’s like “that’s not the team colors. Do they I’m stupid because I’m a girl and will only buy a jersey if it’s pink”. And she likes pink, a lot of her wardrobe is pink (and quite honestly I think it’s a great color on her, but then again I’m biased!)
As far as the comment about being AGAINST cancer research. Let me make this point clear: I never ever thought that of anyone that shares your opinion of the pink for mother’s day/breast cancer. My point of view and my “tradition” comment stems from Paul’s pink article last year (that pissed me off so much). It was a vibe a got that people were like “the pink doesn’t match with anyone’s uniform, it clashes, the bats don’t look right, I don’t like the color pink, etc, etc”. I felt it was narrow-minded in light of what the goal of that day was for.
Maybe I’M naive, but I don’t take what MLB is doing in this case is superficial. I guess they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Because if they don’t create awareness, no one will know they’ll helping out a cause, yet when they do create awareness, people tend to agree with your opinion that it’s a “look at me” situation.

Saw that auction just today, too. Again, not saying my memory is perfect, guys (that’s why I keep all the clippings, LOL). As I mentioned at first, my recollection is that it was right before Braves left Milwaukee, or perhaps right after they moved to Atlanta (cuz those last Milwaukee Braves had fallen from the mighty by then and were virtually NEVER on TV here in an American League city, and drew precious little national media coverage). BUT, you’ve just about convinced me this is a scrambled memory on my part. I may have associated the Braves’ NOB with the Reds simply cuz they were HUGE like the Reds (and NOB were still pretty new back then). Dunno. We’ll see tonight when I start leafing through my “BRAVES” morgue. If I’m wrong, I’ll sure take the fall. If my recollections prove to be accurate, then we’ll have something new to puzzle over. I’ll never say “told u so.” Don’t think that’s what this site is about.

we have breast cancer bats in may, and prostate cancer bats in june…do we get red (pick a color…maybe black??) bats for lung cancer??? orange bats for pancreatic cancer??? what about blue balls for testicular cancer???
it’s all too much…good cause or not…stop exploiting the pink as an excuse to say “LOOK AT ME” … do it in a responsible and quiet manner[/quote]
I’m glad someone finally brought this up, and I apologize if someone else did before and I missed it. But I’ve lost serveral family members to cancer/complications from cancer and none of those were cases breast cancer. And it’s always kind of drove me nuts that breast cancer, and prostate cancer to a lesser extent, get so much publicity and money when I’m sure other fields of cancer research get next to nothing. I just wish it was more fair to all cancer, I know thats a nearly impossible task, but I wish they’d(MLB) at least try, insted of worrying more about how they look on TV, and how many times they get mentioned in the paper for doing “great” things. If that means devoting days to multiple kinds of cancer research, adding aids, MS, Autism, etc, or just donating all the money to a general cancer fund that will distribute it more wsiely, I don’t know. But I do know that exposure by baseball and it’s TV audience helps generate money, and they have 81 home games to run promotions, giving more evenly can’t be too much to ask.
But, once it comes time to run a promotion the pink bats are fine, IMO, and the pink ribbons too. But the Nick Swisher, cover youselves in pink trend is just stupid. Is he trying to convince us he cares more than the guys just wearing one armband? I’m going to have to side with the guys/gals that think a uniform is called a uniform for a reason, and people shouldn’t be able to go all willy-nilly and wear whatever they want just because they’re running a charitable promotion. So maybe I don;t like it the more I think about it. Not to mention, an auctioned bat that’s the normal game-day color scheme would probably fetch more dough than a pink one anyway.

As an east coast follower of the Sox (watcher of games on WGN and I hate how the Cubs hog the headlines) I agree with you about the shorts. What they sport them for, a weekend? But that 76-81 uniform set was really unique. The untucked jersey, the collars, the typography, the striped socks rather than stirrups.
Not really a GOOD look per se, but definitely something to talk about and yes, it gest lost in the shuffle when you talk about the shorts.
I remember seeing those unis on baseball cards and thinking they looked like bowling shirts.

Which is why he shouldn’t, and he won’t.
Good call on the Sox – the shorts thing is blown way out of proportion, especially considering they only wore the things a couple times.

I hate Cubs media circus as well, but the “shorts incident” was an attempt at stealing casual fans by the late, great Bill Veeck. So if we hate the Cubs getting all the attention, and an attempt is made to grab some of that attention, can we really be such eye-rollers when we hear it mentioned? I dunno, as much as I wish it was the Cubs that did it insted of the Sox, it’s at very least a cute story I can tell my kids someday.
How clueless are these Mets announcers when it comes to the HIDEOUS BLACK DROP SHADOWS?!
Gorgeous stuff on that Cincinnati Reds uniform page.

I’m usually an NHL apologist, but there’s some merit to that criticism. At least three times during these playoffs so far, at the American Airlines Center before a Stars game, I’ve not only had to ask staffers in the bars and the Platinum Club to put Versus on some of the TVs so we could keep up with other games — which clearly would never happen if the games were on ESPN or Fox Sports — but I’ve actually had to inform them that Versus is on channel 79 on their local system.[/quote]
As for versus, i think a lot more people get versus than you would think, they just don’t want to look for it. It needs to be a station where people channel surf to so they can say “Hey a hockey game, lets watch this”, i doubt versus is on anyone’s list of channels they surf too. It does suck that it is on a weird network, but they do an excellent job doing intermissions. However I think their play by play guys are awlful. Still think CBC is the best. Too bad I don’t get them in HD.

The typeface was georgous and unique. It had a traditional baseball look, and at the same time had some modern fashion elements that have never been on another uniform to my knowledge (the collar especially).

The result was a simple light on the screen wherever the puck was. It was low-tech, brilliant and not a distraction at all (pretty much the exact opposite of fox\’s vapor trails).

Actually, Paul, I’ve written to New Era and have gotten a response. They’ve been 3-Ding caps for over 50 years now on and off, a few examples which can be found on baseball cards and photos, mainly the Dodgers, the Cardinals and the Yankees, from what I’ve seen. Currently they place a piece of foam on the hat, then the needle picks away the excess. Before this became common practice in the early to mid 90s, they would either cut out a piece of cardboard in pattern, or simply stitch over and over to 3-D the logo.

You may have long ago addressed this here, but the ’69 and ’70 White Sox unis are a place where Okonnen and most others get it wrong. Design of both uniforms was identical, but colors differed. The ’69 unis were Royal Blue and White, including royal blue sanis, with powder blue road uniforms. For ’70, everything Royal changed to Navy, and the road uniforms went to traditional gray. Searching the Topps cards from ’70 and ’71 make it perfectly clear that was the case. There are two distinct color schemes, and they can only be from ’69 and ’70. A key I.D. element is the ’69 anniversary patch on the left sleeve of the Royal and powder look, and the absence of it on the ’70 unis.
And I imagine if anyone can tell the difference between Royal and Navy, it’s this bunch here at UniWatch.

Getting away from the Reds, Pinks, etc. for a second:
In the commercial for Sports Illustrated’s “Championship Pack” (DVD, Book, Basketball) for the Kansas Jayhawks, there’s a shot at the end of the commercial showing Coach Bill Self talking to one of his players. The shot is very quick, but it looks like the player is wearing a uniform with the old (pre-Trajan) font.
The Indians, wearing the Blue alts and playing the first game of a doubleheader (a game that was of course scheduled for yesterday and rained out), are wearing the pink ribbon on their jerseys while the the Blue Jays are ribbonless on the road grays.
The Turco helmet… could it be that there is a strong white reflection in the white helmet image? It looks like the helmet is black on the sides on chin guard. The black helmet also has brighter gold in the middle/forehead area which could look white depending on the exposure. Possibly the same helmet? Hmm…

I’m reading a book on the Reds and I’ve gotten to the part where she refused to provide food for the Reds World Series celebration after game 4 of the 90 world series because they had the audacity to clinch the title away from home (a couple players made a late night burger run to feed the party), then refused to pay for Eric Davis’ flight home (he lacerated his kidney diving for a ball in game 4 and had to be hospitalized) because he was unable to take the team charter.
[quote comment=”269433″]The Turco helmet… could it be that there is a strong white reflection in the white helmet image? It looks like the helmet is black on the sides on chin guard. The black helmet also has brighter gold in the middle/forehead area which could look white depending on the exposure. Possibly the same helmet? Hmm…[/quote]

I remember the mesh Spring Training hats well. Was it really because Marge was too cheap, or were they some kind of weird precursor to the alt Spring Training hats that we see today?[/quote]
In marge’s defense, most teams wore mesh in spring training in the 70’s and early 80’s (you have to be old enough to remember when truckers hats were in style the 1st time to understand, she just continued it several years after other teams stopped.

and because, well, she was too cheap to get them new caps

I hope this is an April Fool’s joke!

If a puck starts glowing, but nobody tunes in to VS to see it, does it really light up?[/quote]
Typical wise-ass comment about the state of hockey. I suppose you’re enjoying the wildly exciting…ahem…NBA playoffs.[/quote]
I actually like hockey … I don’t watch it on TV, but I like it. What my comment refers to is the disappointing decision to broadcast (oxymoronic word in this context) on a network that 95% of Americans couldn’t identify on their list of channels, even if given multiple guesses!
The game itself, like soccer/futbol, is one that seems to be appreciated across the globe, just not in our ADD society, and going from ESPN to VS didn’t help the cause.[/quote]
I’m tired of ESPN setting the agenda on what sports are relevant and what ones aren’t simply by what leagues they carry.[/quote]
I think the argument is the “glowing puck” is not needed or appreciated by a hockey fan/purist. These are the same people who already watch VS for hockey. The benefit of the glowing puck is for the casual fan, the one who hears about this Crosby/Ovechkin kid, but can’t find VS to watch the game, and when they do, they get bull riding instead…
The only thing good about the glowing puck is the ability to see it “through” things- like the glove that covered it in the net last night or along the nearside boards.
Sorry, no pics, but did anyone notice the logo creep on Sergio Garcia at the Player’s Championship? In addition to the usual adidas logos on the chest and sleeve and shoes and the back of the golf shirt, his belt buckle was even 3 stripes!
Sad

The weird thing about Fleury’s pads is that he has never worn the Pittsburgh jerseys that ever had that colour. He’s only been part of the gold and black era. He’s since changed to more formal colours, though.

Sore spot from last night. How they could review that play for 4 minutes and not get it right irked the hell out of me.
During last night’s Red Sox game, when the camera zoomed in on Jacoby Ellsbury after he got hit by a pitch, I noticed that he had some sort of a plastic thing around his thumb.
I can’t find a good pic from last night, but this pic shows him wearing something similar:

anyone know what that is or what it’s used for?
so…what number is junior gonna wear with seattle? 24?

yes. i work with an ncaa team and it appears to be a little rubber piece that goes around your thumb to decrease reverberations from making bad contact with the ball on a swing. if you have hit against a fast pitcher you probably know that it can be painful. it is just a little piece of rubber and like i said it goes around your thumb. not sure what it is called

What Ellsbury was probably wearing is called a “ProHitter” which not only reduces sting as previously suggested but also “produces quick hands, faster wrist turns, increasing bat speed and power.”

What? No Oregon in that Top Ten? This guy needs to have his priorities straightened out.
Beside Roberto Luongo’s 2nd mask last year, which he wore with Vancouver’s then-throwback unis, Ed Belfour wore home and road masks for his last few NHL seasons with Toronto and Florida (he played in Europe this year).
Johnny come lately that I am I’m sure it’s been mentioned but I haven’t read all the comments/ Marty Turco isn’t the first NHl goalie to have a home mask and a road mask. Former Stars goalie Ed Belfour was the first and carried that over to the Maple Leafs when he went there. I’m not sure if Belfour has continued to have a home and road mask now that he’s playing in Europe.

Yep, in fact, Turco picked up the home/road mask bit from Belfour. (I’m a Dallas area resident, Stars fan, and recreational goaltender, so I’ve been locked into the whole situation from its beginning.) Eddie wore a green mask with the white jersey and a gold mask with the green jersey in Dallas. If you look back on earlier Turco pictures from when he was Belfour’s backup, you’ll see that he began with simply changing the color of the gargoyle on the front of his mask.
(FYI, players wear helmets, goaltenders wear masks. I know it’s nitpicking, but that’s what wedo here, isn’t it?)
This is another logo that probably should’ve gone back to the drawing board.
