Not Quite the Roman Coliseum, But It’ll Do

[Editor’s Note: Longtime reader Mike Cooperman attended last Saturday’s Dodgers/Bosox exhibition game at the fabled L.A. Coliseum and generously offered to provide the following account of his day — enjoy. — PL]

By Mike Cooperman

Along with 114,298 of our closest friends, my wife and I took in Saturday night’s Dodgers/Red Sox game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The game featured some interesting Uni Watch fodder — some classic, and some we could have done without.

Why, you might ask, would the Dodgers be playing a baseball game in a football stadium, especially since the stadium configuration resulted in left field being only 201 feet away from the plate, with a 60-foot-high net?

Well, it just so happens that 2008 is the 50th anniversary of the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. And when the Dodgers arrived in Los Angeles, they played their first four years in the Coliseum.

Yet, neither of the above-linked logos ended up on the Dodgers’ jerseys for Saturday’s game. Instead, they wore a barely visible patch honoring the team’s official charity, ThinkCure (to which all proceeds from the game were donated). While their hearts were certainly in the right place, methinks their logo designers were not.

Between innings, the Dodgers honored influential figures from the team’s history, including several players from the late ’50s and early ’60s, who were honored alongside Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabar (since he, like the Dodgers, is originally from Brooklyn). So, how come Kareem got an authentic fitted cap, but Duke Snider got stuck with something from the gift stand?

Speaking of caps, the same marketing geniuses who had the cool idea of bringing the Dodgers back to the Coliseum also came up with this — a hybrid of the Dodgers cap in USC Trojan colors, readily available at the memorabilia shops conveniently located every 10 feet. As a Trojan alum, I absolutely do not approve, plus it feels like a rip off of this. While I had to stare at the back of that cap the entire game, at least I could look to my left and admire the classic kicks of the guy sitting next to me.

While we witnessed history — not only the largest crowd in baseball history but certainly the largest wave as well — the Dodgers missed a chance to set up a Battle of the stylized Bs. Also, I learned definitively that there is a third certainty in life: death, taxes, and no matter what logos, caps, or venues are involved, Dodgers fans still come in the 2nd inning and leave in the 7th.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Latest team planning to use a translated team name to appeal to the Latino market: the Mariners, who’ll dress up as the Marineros on May 31st. ”¦ NC State broke out some awesome striped stirrups on Tuesday (additional pics here and here, courtesy of Drew Johnson). ”¦ Yesterday I linked to this story about an April Fool’s Day prank. That led to the following response from Matt Rizzolo: “I’m actually friends with the guy pictured on the card. His name is Sensen Lin, and he’s a 25-year-old law student at NYU who I worked with this past summer at Ropes & Gray, a law firm in NYC. The kicker is that he isn’t a baseball player or even a fan, and he’s not even Japanese — he’s Chinese! He told me that they paid him about $600 for two hours of posing. Not bad work, huh?” ”¦ Got a sweet tooth? Now you can have your favorite MLB team’s logo printed on M&M’s. Too bad they felt the need to include the little “â„¢” marks, which kinda ruins all the fun, at least for me. If the M&M’s “m” logo doesn’t have a trademark annotation, why should the MLB logos? Jeez. ”¦ The Wild will be wearing a “Team of 18,000” patch tonight (I guess that’s sort of the opposite of “Army of One,” right?), and all fans in attendance will receive the patch as well. Details here (with thanks to Matt Myer). ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The Mets’ little Velcro patch, whose stitched outline is usually visible between “New” and “York” on the team’s road jersey, appears to be missing so far this year. My hunch: Because the Mets went straight from spring training to a season-opening road trip, equipment manager Charlie Samuels hasn’t had time to add the little Velcro patches. I suspect they’ll be sewn on once the team gets back to New York. ”¦ Steven Siegel got a good shot of Jose Molina wearing a knit cap under his hockey-style mask last night. ”¦ Lots of info here about the Giants’ Super Bowl ring design. As a longtime Jints fan who hates gold and loves anything silver-toned, I’m psyched to see that the ring will be white gold. ”¦ The South Carolina Gamecocks have gotten some newfangled equipment (with thanks to Franklin Beau). ”¦ Ready for the new NFL logo? Roger Goodell sure is (courtesy of Brinke Guthrie). ”¦ As you probably know by now (and as Larry Bowa has certainly been made aware), third base coaches are required to stay within the coaching box this year. But Mike Hersh notes that the 3B box in San Diego appears to have been extended. Anyone know if this is an MLB-wide thing, or are the Padres just looking to give their coach a bit of extra leeway? ”¦ It’s hard to see, but the Indians’ NOB drop shadow is now gone (although the outlining is still there).

None of the links from dailynews.mycapture.com are working. They all send you to the same default page, where’s there’s nothing from the Coliseum game.

    Paul,

Bengie Molina plays for the Giants; Tha Molina on the Yanks wearing the toque is Jose (Yadier plays in St. Louis). I know its hard to keep up with those Molinas.

I was at the Yankees-Blue Jays game last night, and I ended up sticking around a few minutes after the game ended. I noticed that one of the Yankees relievers had the rooking hazing pink backpack that some other teams (Angels, Red Sox, etc) have been using for a few years.

Have the Yankees always been doing this, or is this something new?

    They do the wave everywhere!

The AP game story for the Astros-Padres mentioned the extended third base coaching box.

    Hey Paul,
Is it possible that the Mets have the Velcro installed but because the road uni’s are now Cool Baseâ„¢ they can’t be seen as well? Just a thought.

Shit — sorry about that. Link rot must have set in extra-early on those pics. I’m not home right now, but when I get home later this morning I’ll see if I can do anything about it.

I noticed that yesterday. I even double checked the Lids website to investigate the D on both the home and road caps. Much to my chagrin, they were both the same.

And as for the Diamondbacks mirror image DB/Snake logo, I have to admit, I have never seen it as a snake before it was on the M&M!

Anybody notice that if you click on the drop-down box in “Choose your team”, that the Tampa AL franchise is listed as “Tampa Bay Rays”, and the candies feature four logos – one of which is the now defunct “Devil Ray”?
Or am I not the first one who clicked through and looked at EVERY TEAM? ;-)

no…but you’re the only one who clicked on the devil rays :O

Also from last night’s Blue Jays-Yankees game, #20 Rod Barajas was wearing a #23 batting helmet. I know Shannon Stewart switched from #4 in Spring Training to #23 for the regular season, and Barajas switched from #23 to #20. Funny they haven’t updated the helmets yet.

A friend of mine has her replica Mets jersey and cap, and does agree that Ditch the Black is an excellent idea. But it’s pushed her into thinking that having another color hat would be good.

I want to see what you guys can find for a WHITE Mets cap. I’ve already looked at some of the big sites (mlb, lids, starstruck, eastbay), but I know this group can uncover some real gems out there.

link just looks so freaking happy to be wearing it.

The extended third base coaching box is a result of tuesday night. In an effort to keep the grass healthy, the grounds crew moves the box up and down the baseline. On tuesday night, the side closest to home plate was even with third base. As a San Diego runner was coming to third he blew threw the stop sign because he couldnt see the third base coach. The Padres staff put some of the blame of a 2-1 loss on the box location. so for wednesday they extended the box, you can see where the old end line is. i suspect it will be back to normal by the next home series.

Whenever I see Bernard Gilkey, I am reminded of the scene in MIB when the spaceship flies over his head and he geys bonked with the pop up!

BTW, I was watching the Mets/Fish for a bit last night and was really bothered by all of the black on the wristbands, jerseys, socks, etc.

I haven’t voluntarily watched a Mets game since Kevin McReynolds was trolling the outfield. Because of the interest that Uniwatch has created my love for baseball has been rekindled to the point that I will skip bewteen FSNY to watch the Mets and YES to watch the Yanks. We, in New York really have a great baseball situation!

I think of that Japanese pitcher. Forget his name…
Funny how when he came to the Mets, he was given #18, which is apparently a number of high praise for a pitcher. (Why is this again? Paging Mr. Brahm.) But when he proved his unworthiness and went back to Japan, he was given #49, which I believe represents death and pain, respectively.

If the Mets’ jerseys don’t have Velcro now, they likely won’t, as it’s put on by the mfr before the lettering goes on. Otherwise, you have to sew through your lettering (in this case only the “Y” in “York”, but still…).

Uh… San Diego link Tuesday night. I doubt their coaching staff was too upset about it.

It’s hard to see, but the Indians’ NOB drop shadow is now gone (although the outlining is still there).

I don’t think that the home white’s and now-defunct vest were had drop shadows, it was only the blue alternate.

Regarding the Mets velcro- actually, if you look very, very closely, that little velcro patch is way to the right if you are looking at the jersey (hidden mostly underneath the Y). I think it has something to do with the fact that they are the Cool Base jerseys and the material is so flimsy. I have been watching in HD and picked up on that right away. If you look at some of the images, you can see that the top two buttons on some players are unbuttoned, yet the part where the velcro is is still “stuck” to the jersey. Samuels doesn’t add the velcro either, that comes directly from Majestic. I have found evidence of this practice back to the days when the Mets used Rawlings in 1999.

I noticed during the Yankees/Blue Jays game last night that the Yankees still had the All star patch and the Yankee Stadium patch on. Guess it wasn’t just a one night thing like someone said.

Number 18 has been given to ace pitchers often in recent years.

This comes from the Japanese association of the number 18 with one’s specialty, or something they can do really well. As for where that came from, it originates with kabuki. (Yes, really.)

Back in the early 1800s, the famous actor Ishikawa Danjuro made a compilation of eighteen great performances for which his family was renowned. These sheets were kept by actors in their boxes, or o-hako, and so “number 18” and “o-hako” came to be associated with one another. Either one of these words is used today to mean something someone is particularly good at performing, or doing in general.

Why it was chosen for ace starting pitchers and not fielding wizards or relief specialists (for whom the origin seems to fit better) is unknown.

Four (shi) and nine (ku) are indeed death and pain. They love to give those numbers to foreign players who don’t know about those associations — George Altman, Randy Bass, and Cecil Fielder all got this number for the Hanshin Tigers, and it has become associated with power hitters on their team just like it is with Henry Aaron and Reggie Jackson.

Have you ever been to the Trop or are you just going by what the talking heads at ESPN say about it? The Trop has to be one of the best places I have ever watched a game. Without it most games the Devil Rays would have a ton of rain outs, not to mention the damn humidity and mosquitos, gnats, and no-seeums. Sitting inside at a nice cool 72 degrees and watching it storm like the end of the world is the best. Yea the catwalks are there but very rarely come into play. I am still pissed they got rid of the green and white but I think the reason Sternberg kept the Devil Ray was to not totally piss everyone off as soon as he changed the color.

A few years back (I think 2005) when Bengie and Jose were both with the Angels, the Red Sox had the Molina Triple Play. They ended a 3-game series with the Angels in which Bengie caught the second game and Jose the third game. Then they started an interleage series with the Cardinals and Yadier caught.
he ripped off Rich Eisen’s “Say hello to my little friend” line from Scarface, which led Eisen to go to NFL Network
yeah…that’s why

“If the M&M’s “m” logo doesn’t have a trademark annotation, why should the MLB logos?”

M&M’s don’t need to put a trademark notice on their own trademark, because they’re not using it under license from someone else. When M&M starts using someone else’s trademarks on their product, they have to indicate that its used under license.

I remember this discussion coming up a while back regarding the Cubs logo and why it was the only MLB logo that had a trademark notice – IIRC it was because the Cubs were using the logo under license from someone else (Chicago Athletic Club?) while every other MLB club was using their own trademarks.

Whenever you see the circle-R, it means that the person or company using the trademark isn’t the owner. Nothing more complex than that.

I still own one of those Mets “Ice Cream” caps. I know I’m in the majority, but I still love it. At least it was in Mets colors, and not black. I just need to find a place that will dry clean it, because it is FILTHY.

As for the Mets’ missing velcro, I think it’s a CoolBase thing as well. I have two A’s game worn CoolBase jerseys, an alt from ’06 and a home from ’07, and they do not have the velcro patch sewn in.

That third base coaching box was definitely not like that on Monday when i was at the game. It stopped even with third base where you can see its been erased. Its not like coaches stay in the boxes anyway, but I’ll be at today’s game and will have to check that out.

Jacksonville has an NFL Team, that is who cares you schmuck.

And i think what you guys are saying about the SUNCOAST Dome is true. Who wants to be in the humidity and all that crap. Saw a Marlins AFTERNOON game in Joe Robbie…(that is its name) in 1995 and sh*t if i didnt have to buy a new shirt for the ride home

when i clicked that marineros link up above, i was definitely expecting to see something from the NBA crop of “latino” jerseys this year – los bobcats perhaps…

All Indians unis had red letters with an outline and a shadow. On the navy blue jerseys, the outline happened to be blue, so the silver shadow didn’t appear to be directly attached to the letter. The current scheme has removed silver, seeming to replace it with white in most places… which is barely noticeable except where they changed the design.

I tried googling m&m’s to do further research and check out the page that pops up. The dude on the right looks to be straight out of the “Temple of Doom”.

I’ve been reading the blog posts for a while now but haven’t paid much attention to the comment threads, so I apologize if it’s frowned upon to discuss a uniform topic that has nothing at all to do with the main post or current events, but here goes…

I was looking at an old Dallas Cowboys poster I got in the early 90’s with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith on it when I noticed that they both had two white stripes on their socks, similar to the ones on their 1960’s throwbacks. Since most of the pictures I can find of both Aikman and Smith on Google have them with solid blues, as is the current system, it appears to have been a change midway through their tenure. Here are some pics:

    link
    link
    link
Little note: In the striped pic, the sock stripes on the linemen are much larger than the ones on the skill players. Anybody here remember any stories or discussions on this change? I know the general consensus around these parts is that striped >>>> solid. I looked back at Paul’s ESPN article on the Cowboys uni quirks and there’s no mention of the sock change (which makes sense since a change doesn’t qualify as a quirk)

Anyway, just thought I’d throw that on here. Carry on.

I agree. The Indians used to have a really sharp, classic uniform. Red outlined in white. Then they started adding extra outlines and dropshadows, and they just spoiled the look.

Dropping silver was a good start, but replacing it with white only prolongs the problem. It doesn’t fix it.

All I know is I hate domes in general, it’s just too damn sterile an environment to play any sport outside of basketball. And that place just looks tiny, and weird on TV; not to mention how it makes every game look like its overcast and sad(I’m not sure how to explain this better). Btw, sweating thru a shirt happens at almost every major league park in the summer. Average game at US Cellualr field or Wrigley Field in the summer is about 88 degrees and 90% humidity. Deal with it, sweating to death is part of the fun. As long as that new stadium, that looks like the Space Shuttle, can stop the rain, I’m all for it. Of course that comes froma guy that will probably never take in a game there.

88 and 90% humidity is a hell of a lot different than 96 and 99% humidity. The Trop is actuall bigger than a lot of fields including Turner Field. It is a welcome break trust me.

The White Sox radio team mistakingly referred to the Indians opening day jerseys as 1954 throwbacks again last night. Some time around the fifth inning. Steve Stone even got all sentimental and talked about his childhood in Cleveland and the ’54 team. Needless to say I was yelling at my radio. I personally don’t think there’s is much of a difference, I live in Rockford,IL which is around 95% most of the summer, it sucks but you deal with it. Granted we don’t the temp is abotu 10 degree less though. But, I can understand that given the large number of retirees in your area it probably does make sense to keep them in the cool air, so far enough. But, I guess I didn’t specify what I menat when I said small, it’s more that closed in feeling that low roof gives off, but I’m a bit claustrophobic, so I’m sure that factors in for me. I’ve caught plenty of day games at McKethan stadium in Gainesville and Sam Bailey field in Tampa. Both are outside and both are awesome. If you can’t take the heat and mosquitos, why not move back up North? It’s like telling the Packers they need to build a dome.

It absolutely is. Before I went to the Pre Super Bowl UW Party in Park Slope, I used it and it gave me a snapshot of the actual intersection where the bar was. i would have never found it otherwise.

When this feature, along with Google Earth, were first available, my students absolutely LOVED it.
One very cheeky lad tried to find a nude beach one of his friends had told him about. Luckily for all involved, him included, it remained unfound.

I would love to check the address of MSG and see a certain coach walking out with his belongings in a moving box!

Last thing on the Trop. When H.Wayne Huizenga blocked the move of the Giants to St.Petersburg in the early 90’s his man reason was that no team in Florida needed a dome. Now som 15 years later he is fighting with Miami/Dade county to get at least a retractable roof stadium because of all the rainouts they get every year(on average 10+). And there is a huge difference when you add the extra 10 degrees in temp and the extra humidity. And again once inside the Trop it is very nice and roomy. See it for yourself before making blanket statements of how terrible it is.

The Devil Ray is not defunct as it is still a part of their scheme. It appears on both the home and road jerseys in the form of a patch on the left link

Carry on.
Yes, striped is better.

As for the photos, the first has images from the 1989-1993 era (Russell Athletic jerseys). The second is from SB XXX (1995 season). So they just dropped them sometime around 1994. The linemen could look differently just because they are bigger and this stuff all fits snuggly so it stretches when pulled over a bigger body.

FYI all, the Phillies are wearing the new “alt/throwback” today against the Nationals in Philadelphia. They look nice.

update on the Phillies uniform. They are down 5 runs and we are just about to start the bottom of the 1st. Might want to think again about them alt/throwbacks…….

The problem with the Indians’ jerseys until last season was that the dark blue layer formed a drop shadow on the names, but was another border layer on the numbers. It looked really weird. Either have drop shadows, or don’t.

I love the throwbacks, but like many teams these days, they design their jerseys for the bodies of the huge players. The numbers on the backs look link, but are link on the ordinary-sized guys.

This is also the 50th anniversary of the Giants in the bay area. Would love to see a Giants vs. Dodgers NLCS and relive the glory days.

    well, ok then ;)

isn’t that a first base coach pictured? judging from the flapless bonnet, it must be…he also is wearing his pants at approximately navel level (like my old man), so the appearance is that the #OB is ‘too low’…also with NNOB it looks lower than it truly is

I have to disagree that the wave in the at Saturday’s game was the largest ever. Maybe at a baseball game but not ever.

Way back when the Indy 500 mattered there was a major wreck on the first lap, leading to a restart about an hour later. Since we were all in our seats and lubricated we amused ourselves. The wave ensued and since the permanent seating at the IMS is about 350k, that is surely the largest wave ever.

No, I took me forever to find it once before too. I’d look myself, but the score’s site is blocked here at work. If all else fails, call in to “Who you crappin?” this afternoon on Boers and Burnstein. I’m sure they’d pass it along to Stoney.

I think the deal with the Padres 3rd coaching box has to do with Bowa’s recent suspension. He got into an argument with an ump for leaving the coaching box, and got thrown out of the game, then suspended.

A buddy of mine who lives in L.A. went to the Coliseum game and said it was a blast.

We were talking about it and I wondered if there was any precedent for an event like this, i.e., team going back to play a game in its old stadium after playing many years in a new one, in the same city.

We discussed the Yankees going from Yankee Stadium to Shea and back in the 1970s when the former was rebuilt, but that was a very different circumstance. They moved to Shea temporarily out of necessity, the return to Yankee Stadium was permanent (well, not really, but you get my meaning) and in the interim the facility had essentially been completely rebuilt from the outside in.

The only other example I could think of, also involving the L.A. Coliseum as it turns out, but not involving the same city, was the L.A. Raiders moving back to Oakland in ’95, although that’s also not entirely analogous as, like the Yankees, the move back was essentially permanent and the old facility was extensively remodeled (in this case subsequently). Perhaps a better example would be the exhibition game they played in Oakland against the Oilers in 1989.

Can anyone think of another example of this type of event?

It’s a little bit of a reach but on April 15, 1998 the Yankees played one “home” game at Shea after a beam collapsed at Yankee Stadium. That means that they returned to a stadium that they called home for the 1974 & 1975 seasons.

It’s a little bit of a reach but on April 15, 1998 the Yankees played one “home” game at Shea after a beam collapsed at Yankee Stadium. That means that they returned to a stadium that they called home for the 1974 & 1975 seasons.
Rumor has it that the Cubs will be playing in US Cellular for a year or so when they finally sell the stadium to, whom ever, and start renovating.
Chances are it won’t happen, but I’d hitchhike to Chicago to see link again.
The Birmingham Barons do this every year. Throwback uniforms at the throwback field.

FYI for paul…pic #8 in the gallery shows lo duca with the inverted “I” (a/k/a uniform malfunction)
great catch, Phil!

Chances are it won’t happen, but I’d hitchhike to Chicago to see the Bears play Wrigley again.

I would rather see that “impossible” ski jump at Wrigley with my won eyes!

Just wanted to report, Braves pitcher Jeff Bennett wore stirrups in his emergency start on Thursday. His pants were very strange though, really bunched up at where they meet the socks.
