This Double Made Possible By …

double

Every time I see something like Orlando Hudson’s apparent miracle double on Friday night, I think of this. Or of Ricky Bobby’s prayers, during which he thanks the Lord Baby Jesus for blessing him with the support of “Dominos, KFC, and the always delicious Taco Bell.” But remember this  — and this is the end of the movie quotes (for everybody, got it?)  — “Jesus, he’s a good man. But he no help me hit curveball.”

And for those wondering: Yes, it was a slow day on the uni front, unless you count this. Is Fukudome wearing blue velvet Asics? — Bryan

Man, do I hate Memphis’ uniforms. They are horrible on so many levels, from the design, to the cut of the jerseys. Complete garbage. And of course, they are made by Adidas.
Long live the Swoosh!!

they are terrible. the good thing about them is that you probably only have to look at them for only 1 more game.

memphis was with reebok for like 10 minutes a while back. they outfitted memphis using their iverson I3 line of shoes, uni, and product. they werent too bad.
link

say what you want about memphis, but they play in a garbage conference, and their whole means of play, the dribble drive motion, the basic freelance offense is no different than what you can see on the and1 mix tape. its gonna fail soon.

the kid douglas roberts is a player, i’ll give you that. but i dont trust memphis (or tennessee for that matter) style of basketball.

calipari has the wool pulled over the eyes of the media and of most of america. i think he escapes the scrutiny of playing in sub par conferences, and recruiting talent which is not the best academically (anyone know what his grad rates are?) by being a great, friendly and personable guy (ive met him, he is a nice guy!) and always giving great media interviews.

he is a great recruiter of talent. one of the best. but he has made a career of simply getting great recruits and playing in terrible conferences. he has rarely if ever had more than 1 team in conference (a10 or usa) that challenged his teams for supremacy. its an easy way to get safety, contract extensions, and nba offers. interesting how he never took the jobs at any of the “major conferences”.

Also I like it when MLB hosts games in cities that have baseball, but not major league baseball. Like last night in Miami the Marlins played the Yankees……oh wait a minute, bad example.

I had something uni-related and now I can’t remember it. Damn it, I hate when I do that.

Some disturbing news last night: I was playing my first game in the local men’s wood bat league, decked out with 9″ red stirrups and everything. But lo and behold, the opposing team’s coach (the league’s commissioner) who clearly doesn’t Get It told me that by the next game I had to either wear all red socks or pull my pant legs all the way down. Rather silly, if I must say.

Before Calipari got there, Memphis actually had a 0% graduation rate…He’s managed to get it up to about 40%.

Perhaps citing historical precedent (and bad-assery) of stirrups will shut him up.

Post his email and let us get after him – he’ll learn to fear the stirrup.

Funny as this is up the main picture on ESPN.com shows Stephan Curry pointing and looking towards the Heavens. And I couldn’t agree more, athletes thanking God for helping them win means God is taking sides, and I would like to think that God is a little busy with, war, famine, and many other catastrophic events then who wins the Middle Tennessee State vs Eastern Michigan basketball game.

God is all powerful, he can influence thousands of games worldwide. Everybody knows he’s a fan of the underdog. That’s why Davidson and George Mason a few years ago have done well. God hates the over-hyped teams. Case in point: The Patriots in the last Super Bowl and the Yankees since 2000.

A shadow from the feathers.

Weird, funny video from 1970 here called link.

There’s some comedian (I feel like I should recognize him) doing a silent routine in a sweet uniform at the start, then some old ladies making baseball gloves, then Woody being hilarious about playing baseball.

Does anyone know where to find Replica Marquette basketball shorts online? Like the kind the actual team wears, or at least look a lot like the teams shorts. I can only find one off the beaten path site that sells them, but they don’t even have them in stock.

I know this seems like a completely oddball question to ask, but…

The Civil Rights Game uniforms. We all say things like “oh, thats more uniform revenue”.

Who are the people that buy those pieces of crap? They look like a misprint that you find at your local ‘irregulars’ discount department store. You wear something like that people are going to say “what a cheap looking jersey.”

Do people really seriously buy these things?

With him wearing a white uni, and performing against a white background, it took a moment for me to notice that he didn’t really use any baseballs, doing a pantomime using vocal sound effects.

Unreal. Did this guy say why he was imposing such a rule? Little power hungry, is he?

Just noticed that the Portland Timbers wore their new 3rd kit last night – Rose City Red. link that shows all three of their new kits for this season. To my knowledge, they’ve never had red before. Their 3rd kit was previously yellow.

Two thoughts about that Cubs photo:

Fukudome looks a little uncomfortable.

The showgirl’s boob is pressed into Fonzi’s arm, and he feels a-OK about it.

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matt. 10:30.

The idea that God is “too busy” to care about Orlando Hudson’s livelihood or about anything else He created is antithetical to the concept of an unlimited, all-powerful deity.

I’d love for my team to go to the Elite-8 every year, I’ll take that “garbage” any day of the week. Does Michigan State have your respect? Because Memphis just wiped the court with them. I don’t care if you don’t like a team, but don’t be stupid and say a team that goes deep in the tourny every year is “garbage”.

Take it to BibleWatch, guy! :)

While I’m as against thanking deities for every minor thing as anybody, I will say that some of these players aren’t doing that, but rather doing it as a remembrance of a dead family member. (I guess pointing up is easier (and less-confusing for everybody) than figuring out where that person is buried in relation to the stadium you’re in and pointing in that direction.)

Still, I’m waiting for the athlete who starts pointing down after home runs and then in interviews explains in complete seriousness that he’s a Satanist. I’d root for that guy.

i gotta agree with the dawg here, todd

say what you will about memphis playing in a “subpar” conf, and cal maybe not being john wooden, but this team is the real deal, i think, this year

they flat out RAPED the sparties last night…i mean…took them behind the woodshed and had their way with them raped…even when state when on a 15 or 16 point run in the second half, memphis was only playing at half speed and STILL had a 16 point lead!

will they win the whole thing? i doubt it, but after last evening, i wouldn’t call it an upset either

…now…as far as the tiger unis…well, maybe they’ll dump the 3 stripes of nike one of these years
maybe they’ll dump the 3 stripes of nike one of these years
that should say *for nike*

Mets Classics on SNY right now has a Mets/Phillies game from 1988 when they clinched the NL East. The Phillies have on their sweet powder blue unis.

OK OK – I hear you. I completely acknowledge that the topic has nothing to do with uniforms. I’d rather be talking uniforms, ’cause that’s what I came here for. I’ll lay off the amateur biblical scholarship.

BUT I didn’t raise the topic in the first place – Bryan did because he, admittedly, could not think of anything uni-related to say.

a. i’m not stupid. no reason to start shouting invective
b. never once did i say that the team was garbage. nor did i say that getting to the regional final was either, those were your terms.
c. i did say however that their conference was garbage. i dont think that it can be disputed that conference usa is not a tough conference. in fact i feel it is, at best, equal to, or inferior than most conferences referred to as mid majors.
d. if you really read what i wrote, i wasnt overally critical of their team. in fact, you’ll notice that i agree that calipari has great talent playing there. i believe i said some of the best (i directly mentioned douglas roberts and nobody can debate rose).
e. i dont like memphis (or its reasonable facsimile, tennessee) so you shouldnt care dawg. but please dont put words in my mouth and have me saying things that i never did.
f. all im saying that calipari and his teams might have a bit more pride, a bit more sense of accomplishment in their seasons, knowing that they played teams like top acc, big east, big 10 or pac 10 teams twice a year and earned their regular season and conference tourney titles rather than continuing to play patsys like smu and utep.

I’m not going to delve too much into the religious stuff, but I will say that, as a high school football player, one of our teammates led the team in prayer before every game, and he never prayed for victory. He prayed for the health and safety of all involved, and for God to allow us to be the best we could be, but never for God to help us win.

You know what I expect? Just the regular damn uniforms! Put a patch on them if you must, but PLEASE no terrible uniforms for the sake of putting some leftover polyester to use.
I like uniforms, but I HATE cookie cutters with a fleeting passion. That’s why I hate the Nike World horns and generally didn’t care for Adidas World Cup jerseys. And that’s what the Civil Rights Game looks like to me. Stupid one-color LOLcat font on the front, cities only on the front (looks like a baseball video game without an MLB license), and probably single-color back numbers without names.
If you MUST have a more creative solution with alternate one-time jerseys, how about Negro League jerseys or throwbacks to 1963, the year of “I Have a Dream?” But these turds from the template are indefensible.

The Mets are wearing their ugly ass black hats for the Civil Rights game. Not only is it an ugly cap, but it doesn’t fit with the ugly unis…

I agree with you Mike. Maybe next year we’ll see the Philadelphia Phillies (as the Philadelphia Stars or Hillsdale Giants) against the Baltimore Orioles (as the Baltimore Black Sox.)

Shouldn’t the Civil Rights game feature two teams that, you know, existed when the Negro Leagues were around? Just a thought.

Oh, and as far as my stirrups story goes, he didn’t really give me much of an explanation. I think it’s either an NFL style “everyone must match” thing or he for some reason viewed the white sanitary socks as distracting. Seriously. So much for the money spent of two pairs of stirrups…

I wonder how the Mets would look if they were wearing their blue hats with their unis today.
Shouldn’t the Civil Rights game feature two teams that, you know, existed when the Negro Leagues were around? Just a thought.
It’s the Civil Rights Game, not the Negro Leagues game. The fact that baseball needed a Negro Leagues shows that baseball wasn’t very interested in Civil Rights back then, so I say it’s better to have 2 teams that existed in the Civil Rights era participate in the Civil Rights Game.

Personally, I say make Atlanta a permanent participant, since that’s where the Reverend King was from, but then you get into the hypocrisy of a team named the Braves playing in the game.

I’ve always wonder why the Dodgers haven’t been in these Civil Rights games (although this is just the second one). Now I almost wouldn’t want them to be if they had to change their unis to this crap we are seeing today.

My sentiments exactly!! these uni’s are boring and totally uninspired, especially given the importance of what this game represents. I agree, using the uni’s of the Negro Leagues would be perfect to honor the live of black folk, white folk and any other color folk who dedicated and some who gave their lives for the cause of freedom and civil rights. heck, i’d almost rather see Trajan font used on the uni’s……….OK, maybe i went to far with that

I took a peek at the MU site yesterday when it was first asked, and they only have the shorts in youth sizes.

Jaroslav Halak, the backup goalie for the Montreal Canadiens has a new helmet. His old one had a depiction of Patrick Roy hoisting the Stanley Cup. After the link with Patrick Roy this past week, I see he has changed it.

I will try to post photos later.

Nice catch! I was wondering when that would appear. It’s a shame, though … I mean, the logistics of dugouts on the field, a temporary “foul ball” net in the middle of grass, and what set of seats need to be blocked out for a batter’s eye? Too many issues here. I would have MUCH preferred to have seen a “Polo Grounds” type field with 600 feet to dead center.

They have actually reconfigured the Coliseum in the past 10-20 years. They removed the Olympic track and, I think, lowered the playing surface to add more seats closer to the USC Song Girls. It would be impossible to exactly duplicate the 1958 configuration.

My sentiments exactly!! these uni’s are boring and totally uninspired, especially given the importance of what this game represents. I agree, using the uni’s of the Negro Leagues would be perfect to honor the live of black folk, white folk and any other color folk who dedicated and some who gave their lives for the cause of freedom and civil rights. heck, i’d almost rather see Trajan font used on the uni’s……….OK, maybe i went to far with that
I just don’t understand why they are wearing uniforms that don’t signify, well, anything. It’s a pretty dumb idea, the uniforms I mean.

Just noticed something near the end of the UNC-Louisville game. They showed a closeup of Denny Green shooting a free throw, and his jeresy was missing the memorial parth for Eve Carson. It took me a minute to remember that, earlier in the game, Green had gotten a cut on his head and had to be taken out of the game because of blood. He must’ve had to have changed jerseys, and the backup blood jeresy didn’t have the patch on it.

I’m really bummed that this game isn’t nationally televised. I understand the significance of the Civil Rights game and all that, but ESPN should’ve televised both.

link. How cool does that look?

I should’ve mentioned this in my last comment, but I just noticed this now…link!

It’s basically a five-man infield.

good call stevo

you can see link without the eve patch (far right) in this pic;

and link the patch is clearly missing

(see link for reference as to where the patch should be)

question…since im not particularly familiar with the ‘blood jersey’…if he had to wear it, wouldn’t it NOT have had his number? or do they keep ‘backup’ jerseys for each player?

failing that, is it possible the patch just plain fell off?

any help would be appreciated

It could be that the backup jerseys don’t have the Eve patches, since they’re rarely used. Of course, the jersey does have the NCAA blue dot, but that could’ve been slapped on in the locker room, since we’ve established that those things can be just stuck on.

Y’know, I grew up as a Giants fan in the Bay Area hating the Dodgers, but it would have been kind of cool if the two teams had come up with one patch commemorating baseball’s move to the West Coast.

Fukudome’s shoes do appear to be velvet. I noticed that in Spring Training. I kept staring at his spikes when he was up to bat wondering why they looked so funny.

As for Memphis, they really need to go full Nike. Their football team is Nike, but Calapari has his own deal with Adidas. The biggest problem with their unis is the fact that the official school colors are BLUE & GRAY, not blue & black. Their unis have no gray on them ANYWHERE.
The blue & gray were chosen to honor the end of the civil war, and the coming together of the Union (blue) and confederacy (gray).

Actually, I watched the first few innings (free MLB Extra Innings on the dish this week), and it’s really, really unsettling. The main camera is in deep right-center field, making the view very strange. And the standards for the backstop are pretty much always in the way of any behind-the-plate shot. Still, though, very cool idea.

Interesting fact about the Elite Eight:

Every game features a Nike team vs. an Adidas team

Louisville (adidas)
vs. UNC (Nike / Jordan)

Memphis (adidas)
vs. Texas (nike)

FUCLA (adidas)
vs. Xavier (Nike)

Kansas (adidas)
vs. Davidson (Nike)

That led me to some research (futile since UNC beat Louisville)
I was curious when the last time the Final Four didn’t have a team wearing Nikes.

I believe it was 1981.
Indiana wore Converse
Virginia wore what appeared to be Pro Keds
UNC wore Converse
I couldn’t find any photos of what LSU wore back then but they wore Converse in 1986 so I doubt they were Nike.
1982 – Georgetown and Houston in Nikes
1983 – Houston in Nikes
1984 – Georgetown and Houston in Nikes
1985 – I believe this was the first all Nike Final Four – G’Town, St. Johns, Memphis State, Villanova (Memphis switched to Converse in 1987)
1986 – Kansas
1987 – Syracuse, UNLV
1988 – Kansas, Arizona (not sure what Oklahoma wore)
1989 – Michigan, Seton Hall
1990 – UNLV
1991 – Kansas, UNLV
1992 – Michigan, Cincinnati
1993 – Michigan
1994 – Duke, Arizona
1995 – UNC, Oklahoma State
1996 – Syracuse, UMass, Mississippi St
1997 – Arizona, UNC, Minnesota
1998 – UNC, Stanford, Kentucky (UK’s first year in Nike)
1999 – UCONN, Duke, Ohio State
2000 – UNC, Florida
2001 – Arizona, Duke, Maryland, Michigan State (MSU’s first year in Nike)
2002 – Maryland, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma (Yes, IU did briefly wear Nikes in the Mike Davis era)
2003 – Syracuse, Kansas, Texas, Marquette
2004 – UCONN, Georgia Tech, Duke, Oklahoma St
2005 – UNC, Illinois, Michigan St
2006 – Florida, LSU, George Mason
2007 – Florida, Ohio St, Georgetown

Yea, I’ll agree with Paul that it is a very weird feel for the camera angles and what not. Sometimes the second baseman or umpire gets in the way and you can’t see the batter because the camera’s so much lower than usual. But all in all, I think its pretty cool. I’m a big ballpark guy, so I love seeing this kind of stuff. Anyways, to make this uni-relevant, i saw that the dodgers were gonna auction off link (sorry it’s hard to see) “game worn” jerseys after the game tonight. The only problem is, they’re not wearing those patches in the game. I don’t doubt that they’ll sign the actual jerseys that are being worn, but they’re showing a picture of a jersey with a special Coliseum patch, that isn’t even being worn tonight. Not too big of a deal, I just thought I’d contribute with that.

True – I was putting in all teams that wore Nike shoes.
Prior to 1994 the only teams that had Nike Uniforms were UNLV and Georgetown, so if I was just using teams that were head to toe Nike I couldn’t have included any team other than UNLV and G’Town prior to that year.

at the acc tourney, the EVE patches were being distributed to fans in sticker form. most wore them as a show of solidarity with the team.

im sure they did the same last week in raleigh, and now here back in charlotte. if that element of the uniform was important, a quick sticker fix could have been implementedd.

I went to the game. It was definitely a sight to be seen. The Dodgers went with five infielders, bringing Andruw Jones in…leaving left field empty (it was only 200 feet from home plate-shorter than the fences in the little league world series).

Really a cool thing to see.

Is Fukudome wearing blue velvet Asics?

86 posts and everyone missed it. They are blue suede asics. Get it, Las Vegas, Elvis, Blue Suede shoes?

Agree with the comments about the Civil Rights Game uniforms. One commentator called them “throwbacks.” Uh, what? I would kind of like to get inside the heads of the people who planned this aspect of the game. OK, we see it — they’re stark, on purpose. No nicknames. Yes. OK. Which means … what? That the history of the struggle means that people didn’t have time for frivolous things like nicknames? I just don’t get it.

On to another mini-rant about standardized branding. For how many years has the NCAA been laying down generic court colors for the regionals? Last year, I believe that the eight sites (men + women) were all blue with white letters. This year, black with blue. And, just to make another tenuous connection with the previous paragraph: they had to use the standard, stock fonts — someone above referred to it as the “lolcat” font.

For me, part of the fun each year has been the colorful diversity of the venues. (I know they’ve changed the courts for the Final Four for years, but I still smile when I remember the NC State-Houston game played in New Mexico — with “LOBOS” clearly marked on the endline. Why does every court now have to look identical? We get it; they’re NCAA sites. But the bottom line: Bland. Boring. Ugly.

I’m watching the Braves-Nationals game on TV right now and it appears the Atlanta Braves have new hats. I haven’t seen anything on this yet, including in the MLB preview, but I could be crazy. They are all blue, even the button on top, with the white A.

I actually like them, unlike the Braves themselves. Also, I find it odd that they wear the new all-blue hats, but still wear red-brimmed helmets.
