My knowledge of competitive swimming is pretty limited: I know that Mark Spitz won a shitload of gold medals in 1972, that for a while you couldn’t talk about the East German women’s team without using the term “saliva test,” and that swimmers go through more razor blades than the average person.
But I know a whooooooole lot more about swimming today than I did a day ago — a lot more than I want to know, frankly. For starters, I know that Australia’s Leisel Jones has a bit of back flab. I also know that America’s Amanda Beard definitely isn’t living up to her name. And I learned three things about superduperstar Michael Phelps: 1) He’s got a Christ complex; 2) he’s got the Olympic rings tattooed onto his right hip; and 3) well, see for yourself.
I know all of this, and more, thanks to Speedo, which unveiled its new LZR Racer swimsuit all over the world yesterday. According to this article (which was accompanied by a photo that appears to have been heavily Photoshopped in at least one crucial aspect), the suit has 10% less passive drag than Speedo’s previous Olympic model. And let’s face it, it’s pretty obvious which body part is providing the drag.
More than 50 countries are expected to wear the suit at the Olympics later this year, but the suit will make its competitive debut this weekend at the Missouri Grand Prix. Which just goes to show another thing I just learned: Who knew there were swimming pools in Missouri?
It’s bad enough that they’re rolling out a swimsuit that leaves so little to the imagination, but the name “LZR Racer” surely sets a new standard for loathsome branding. So I was amused to see that the USA Today article kept referring to the suit as “Lzr,” with only one capital letter, which no doubt annoyed the crap out of everyone at the Speedo offices. Or at least I hope it did.
(Thanks to Jeremy Brahm and bench coach Bryan Redemske for their contributions to today’s entry.)

There may not be ‘uniforms’ in the traditional sense but aesthetics certainly play a part. From the grooming to the outfits chosen by the handlers its a great show.

The mention of 32 made me think of this link. Stoudemire later changed his number to 1 and now Shaq is wearing 32 with the Suns. Kinda weird.
Also, Shaq and Stoudemire are roughly the same height but look at where the waistbands hit each of them. Looks like Stoudemire’s is down around his butt.
#32 was worn by that murdering, memorabilia-stealing SOB Orenthal Simpson. Enough!
This has nothing to do with #32, but the Senators and Hurricanes had their new players debut last night.
Cory Stillman wore #61 and Mike Commordore wore #44 for the Senators. Joe Corvo wore #77 for the Hurricanes. Patrick Eaves is still hurt and did not play.

Shaq obviously has a few inches on Stat, and it seems he his wearing his shorts a bit higher (near his belly button) where at Amare (as most 22 year olds{at that time} would) has his shorts lower on his hips. Paul as a former swimmer and someone still around the sport(and their suits) today being a swimmer means that pretty much you see your fellow athletes junk…and even more so for the girls. And swimmers don’t really care IMO, wearing a speedo brief shows just as much if not more then this new suit does. I have seen girl swimmers swim in practically sheer fabric and when i asked if they wanted a different suit they said it just doesn’t care, the suits help more so mentally then physically IMO. It’s that advantage which is comparable to the new heated skates in hockey.
Also that picture of the girl with black flab is actually the suit, squashing her boobs in. Swimmers usually don’t have breasts and when they do you get eye sores like that.
I don’t remember when that Chris Webber picture was taken, but a lot of basketball players went to #32 in the early 90’s in honor of Magic Johnson right after he was diagnosed with HIV.

Webber allegedly started being courted by Martin as an eighth grader and trying to decide which high school to attend. Between 1988 and 1993, Ed Martin allegedly gave Webber (and his family) over a quarter of a million dollars.
Ed Martin became friends with Bill Frieder through Perry Watson, who was the coach at Detroit Southwestern HS at the time (Jalen Rose’s alma mater) When Freider left the team and Steve Fisher took over, Martin’s influence on the program increased. I could go on, but it’s a bit much. If you want more details, the Michigan Daily has a timeline

My thoughts on the 32 situation: 32 is a binary number. Binary numbers tend to have many aesthetically appealing qualities (see link I pasted under this paragraph). 32 in particular is also the first two-digit binary number that doesn’t have a ‘1’ in it, meaning there’s a balance in width between the two digits, also aesthetically pleasing to the eye since there’s a natural “kerning” of the characters. The only other two-digit binary number would be 64, which is a rather awkward number in most sports, with football being the possible exception.

By ‘binary’ do you mean a power of 2? If so, then, yes, 32 is the first two digit binary number without a ‘1’. Then again, there are only 2 binary dual digit numbers without a ‘1’ in them, 32 and 64 (as you mentioned).

Not off the wall at all. In fact there are pictures ON the walls in the interior of Memorial Stadium of pictures where the IU football team has helmets that are cream and crimson (see the helmet with the angled “IU” monogram in link photo). You are quite correct, though, about the fact that IU uses white as its primary fabric color for uniforms. I have a feeling that this is probably because white fabric was easier to come by in the way-back days. My other feeling is that, because white simply looks sharper and cleaner, IU used it go give themselves a better look. Also, I have a feeling that, if IU went to cream-colored uniforms, they would look something like the link.

When you play in a football all-star game, be it high school, college, or professional, it’s common to trade something with another teams logo on it with your teammates. The most commonly traded is the decals of your helmet (in high school anyway). A lot of guys will trade t-shirts, etc…

What is it about athletes wearing No. 32, even if it’s not their regular uni number? First it was Kirby Puckett, then Cal Ripken, and now Todd Krevanchi has turned up an old shot of Chris Webber wearing 32. “Is 32 a universally accepted jersey number for generic media shots?” he asks. Good question – anyone..?
As mentioned in a previous post, many players supported a great #32 Magic Johnson, as he battles the HIV virus. Ironically, another great #32 Karl Malone was NOT one of them…
After Johnson’s announcement many players and fans had mixed feelings about whether Johnson should continue to play basketball. Karl Malone, a future Hall of Famer, expressed his feeling that he did not feel comfortable playing against Johnson because he was concerned that he would contract the virus.
Jim Brown, maybe the greatest all-time great NFL running back and an outspoken activist sported #32, and I assume was influential on young athletes from the ’60’s and ’70’s for his strength both on and off the field.
Sandy Koufax, arguably the greatest left-handed pitcher of all time, also a #32 and also considered one of the greatest Jewish athletes of all time.
So the number definitely has serious performance and purpose mojo when it comes to choosing a number.
Magic. Brown, Koufax, OJ, Malone, Winfield, McHale, Marcus Allen, Carlton…not a bad list…

America has been erased several times if you consider the major sociological changes that the country has experienced as a result of several factors.
Whether it be the Industrial Revolution, both World Wars, the Great Depression, Woodstock, the Raging 80s, the Recession of the 1990s, the Computer Age, or any other sociological influence, the USA has remained a dynamic face of what’s happening in the world.
Baseball, however, has barely changed over time, and tradition speaks volumes in the game. High socks, hitters without batting gloves, throwback players before steroids or HGH, and the old stadiums like Wrigley, Fenway, and Yankee Stadium are all hallowed pieces of history that we clamour for and hold on to in today’s society.

Rick, nothings definite, especially coming from student moles within the AD but, I think if he leaves before the season is over like Ive been told, its going to be difficult. They fired one assistant in October over the last scandal, and theres another one or two that are caught up in this one. there are a good deal of great quotes…perhaps my second favorite, after the one i posted is this…which sums up many a man’s dream:
Well, you know I… I never got to bat in the major leagues. I would have liked to have had that chance. Just once. To stare down a big league pitcher. To stare him down, and just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn’t. That’s what I wish for. Chance to squint at a sky so blue that it hurts your eyes just to look at it. To feel the tingling in your arm as you connect with the ball. To run the bases – stretch a double into a triple, and flop face-first into third, wrap your arms around the bag. That’s my wish, Ray Kinsella. That’s my wish. And is there enough magic out there in the moonlight to make this dream come true?

He wont touch the situation until after the tourney. Undefeated season on the line. Also, hes smart enough to know better. He’d be a good fit in the bang em around in the paint Big Ten
With how unorthodox the uniforms have been while Calipari has been at Memphis, if he actually did get hired in Bloomington, do you think he’d be permitted to make those kinds of changes? One item of note is that they’re both Adidas schools.
God, I hope not.

Ask any proud Sooner fan what Oklahoma’s school colors are & they’ll proudly say “Crimson & Cream” even though they’ve phased out the cream in the last thirty to forty years & gone with white on the uniforms/helmets.
On a side not when teams started using the metallic paint for football helmets, they would name the color after the university. As the Sooners were the first crimson school with the new paint in 2000, they named it “Sooner Crimson”. Since Indiana & Oklahoma have the same school colors, I wonder if Indiana wears “Sooner Crimson” on their lids.

Russell supplied the uniforms during the Fab Five era.

The only other two-digit binary number would be 64, which is a rather awkward number in most sports, with football being the possible exception.
link
By ‘binary’ do you mean a power of 2? If so, then, yes, 32 is the first two digit binary number without a ‘1’. Then again, there are only 2 binary dual digit numbers without a ‘1’ in them, 32 and 64 (as you mentioned).
I was hoping that when Mike Commodore was traded, they’d give him the # 64 for obvious reasons.

a. michigan was losing at the time by 2.
b. carolina i believe had 2 fouls to give at the end
c. carolina also had the posession arrow.
coach smith in his coaching brilliance always seemed to set up close games with that same scenario.
webber didnt lose the 93 national title. carolina beat them.

Without missing a beat, she blurted out Keith “Mister” Jennings. She mentioned that he’s back assisting with the basketball program and asked if I’d like his cell phone number. That Kirby Puckett pic is totally wrong… It says that it is for his first All Star season in 1986. Too bad the Twins didn’t start wearing the pinstripes until 1987. 1986 was the last year of the powder blues. And judging by Kirby’s goatee and girth, I’d say that was an early 90’s pic of him.
