A good number of the comments on yesterday’s post dealt with today’s Manchester United soccer game, where the team will wear a throwback kit in honor of the victims of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster. Setting aside for now the actual looks of the kit, which was disparaged for being boring, it’s best to know a little more about the events being memorialized.
The crash claimed 23 lives, including eight Manchester United players and three staffers. To a soccer-mad country — and for a club with a far-reaching fan base — the crash had a particularly devastating effect. Of the players lost in the crash, most notable was Duncan Edwards. Though only 21 years old, Edwards was the star of the national team — hailed as the world’s next great football talent. The stained-glass window above is from a church in Edwards’ hometown of Dudley, England. Here’s a huge version. That’s his Man U kit on the left and England kit on the right. Said Sir Bobby Charlton, England’s all-time leading scorer:
“He was incomparable, I feel terrible trying to explain to people just how good he was, his death was the biggest single tragedy ever to happen to Manchester United and English football. I always felt I could compare well with any player – except Duncan. He was such a talent, I always felt inferior to him. He didn’t have a fault with his game.“
To put Edwards’ death into perspective related to American sports history, take Ted Williams’ first four seasons — ages 20 through 23. Over those seasons, he hit 127 home runs, drove in 515 runs, scored 541 runs, and hit for a .356 average. In 1941, he hit .406. After the 1942 season, he went to war. But what if he didn’t come back? What do those stats say about what would have been? Might he be canonized like Edwards? The comparison is apt, though slightly morbid. Edwards’ death likely impacted British soccer for the next dozen years, or more.
But on to the kit itself. Though some details aren’t quite right — the red stripe seems to be missing from the shorts in this shot — it’s a good-faith reproduction. Keep in mind it’s just a promo shot. That may not be the final product. Note also, however, that Edwards’ image on the left pane above is also missing the stripe. Is it boring? Perhaps, but it was 1958. Things were like that then. And a snazzier kit no doubt could have been chosen, but those players didn’t have the luxury of choosing the year of the crash.
Finally, given the historical impact of the event, Manchester United’s remembrance might be considered understated — especially when compared to all of those No. 21s for the NFC team in the Pro Bowl today. I’m willing to take the heat for it (that’s why I got the bigger inbox for my email), but I’ll take a simple, classy, one-time gesture over a press conference memorial any day.

FYI, The red stripe shorts in the picture are actually from the away kit, an all while outfit. The regular first kit in 1958 did not have a stripe. For some reason (hell, could be as simple as the regular whites were dirty) they wore the red stripe shorts in Belgrade. link, of course, is the last taken of that brilliant squad.
By the way Bryan, you’ve taken a lot of heat over the weeks about your open thread topics and pics. Today, you kit one out of the park. Right topic, right treatment. Just to add-in a bit more, not only were eight players killed, two others were so injured they could never play again, two more were out of football as a result of injuries within two years, and many others were unavailable for weeks or months afterwards.
In the immediate aftermath, not only had United lost the entire future of one of the greatest players the world had ever seen, or would ever see, they had also lost so many players that they literally could not put eleven men on the field.
Gloriously, many teams offered Jimmy Murphy – temporary manager at United – his pick of their squads as loan players until United could get back together. A number of players were permanently transferred, with the transfer fees reduced or even eliminated, as football pulled together to help United recover.
It took five years for United to put a first-rate side together, with Charlton (a Munich survivor), Law (one of the post-Munich transfers) and Best (arriving from the youth team in 1963). United won the League in 1965 and 1967 and then the European Cup in 1968, just ten years after Munich.

I’m probably going to be chastized for this but I for one am incredibly sick of these over the top tributes to Sean Taylor, I understand that he was murdered in his own home and left behind a family and that was tragic. Leaving aside perseption of behavior and criminal history, the Broncos lost Darrent Williams in a similar matter in the offseason but no league wide memorial was staged. The Broncos and Pat’s lost players in the offseason in the time after Williams death and before Taylor’s but again no league wide memorial. It’s as if the NFL believes that to be honored league wide you need to die during the regular season or be a pro-bowler. Either leave the tributes to the individual teams or make all memorials league wide.

Many feel the league has totally messed up in the past, particularly in the cases of Tillman and Williams, where his teammates were refused the request to do many of the things Washington players are doing in memory of Taylor.
BUT, considering how the ST love has faded and turned to derision “but only toward the memorial – not the man”, it looks like the NFL was right all along. Too much of anything is too much for the public, and no, instead of leaving it on an emotional high, people are sick and tired of the memory of Sean Taylor.

agreed that the ST memorials are far too many in number and overdone. he was a a football player and he died. it was tragic. let’s grieve a bit and move on. this constant, never-ending, long, drawn-out, played-out tribute nonsense is getting tiresome and old. the problem is that it seems insincere, and as with all things NFL, done only for the cash money it hopes to generate. do you think the NFL really gives a rat’s ass about sean taylor, OTHER THAN as regards the publicity-slash-$$$ it generates for itself after his death?

The commemorative Manchester United shirts are lovely, for a club often criticised for leading the march towards total commercialism, the Nike Swoosh-less and sponsorless jerseys are very classy indeed. Also worthy of note is the decision to not have players names on the back of the shirts, this game was about remembering the ’58 players, not massaging the egos of current ‘stars’.

Looks like Nebraska is doing white with pink lettering today, all part of the Think Pink activities to raise breast cancer awareness.
I forgot to say this when the discussion about the whole Think Pink thing was going on, but I’ll say it now: you need events like Think Pink the same reason you need to take refresher courses to keep your CPR certification, if you go too long without having a reason to think about it, you forget about it.

Not to open a difficult discussion (I guess it has already been opened), but there is no evidence come to light so far to suggest Taylor’s death was related to any past behavior. Since it was simply logical to have assumed this a time of the shooting, the apparent fact that it was not isn’t insignificant. If you don’t care about Sean Taylor then it’s pretty easy to throw that around, even if it is apparently not true.

Ferguson didn’t bring anything with him. The Jets were in link from their times in the WHA. Ferguson was the GM of the Jets during their last season in the WHA before they moved to the NHL, so he couldn’t have brought anything with him to Winnipeg.
The Rangers actually abandoned those jerseys after the 1977-78 season. Much like Dallas did with the NHL All-Star jerseys, the Jets simply recycled the look because their jerseys in 78-79 were virtually identical to the Rangers’ jerseys.

Great work Stan & Teebz. It’s funny, that photo was run in the St. Pete Times in relation to a story on the 1985-86 Oilers (re: 2007 Pats) and even mentioned the famous Steve Smith goal but the captioned credited the photo to Gretzky. Thanks guys.

Another uni related note from today’s tribute. Instead of wearing their normal squad numbers, United reverted to the tradition of having the starters wear 1-11. Paul Scholes is normally 18, but was wearing 10, Vidic wears 15, but was in 4 today. John O’Shea, Carlos Tevez, & Nani were the other starters not wearing their normal squad numbers.

I heard that too, but I was at the signing day event that evening and there was no uni-related news. Might have been a false rumor.
I know that pretty much everyone is aware of the Think Pink activities in NCAA women’s basketball, but specifically, the NC State team, whose coach Kay Yow is battling breast cancer, is wearing pink jerseys with every NOB as “Yow” in honor of their coach. Game is being regionally broadcast in ESPN2. I would get a screengrab, but am a poor law student without DVR.

Back in 1979, when Jack Kent Cooke sold the team to Dr. Bus, the yellow pants/breezers/shorts were retired into obscurity (and NHLuniforms.com) history. Can you imagine if the Cooperall pants had not been banned, we’d see all yellow or all purple long pants?

Who decided that the NFC was always going to be blue and the AFC red? Was it decided by the same person who determined the colors for the political parties? (i.e. red and blue states).
A Packer helmet, by the way, goes with neither red nor blue.

that’s a good question stoob..as long as i can remember, it’s always been that way…yesterday i was checking out old pro bowl photos…and in every one, the nfc was solid “home” blue and the afc was “road” white w/red (either pants or numerals or both)
and a viking helmet goes with neither

Jhane Barnes for the Magic//
1998-99 – 2002-03 – For the Magic’s 10th anniversary they introduced a new look designed by fashion designer Jhane Barnes. They removed the pinstripes, but the silky home and away uniforms featured stars as the background. The home jersey is white, with blue Magic logo and numbers with black trim. The blue away uniforms had a white Magic logo (the team dropped the city name for the road uniform) and numbers with black trim.
Alexander Julian Charlotte Hornets//
Julian has designed uniforms for sports teams such as the Charlotte Hornets and North Carolina University Tar Heels basketball teams, and the uniforms, car colors, and crew clothes for the Newman Haas racing team, which is co-owned by Paul Newman.
P Diddy Dallas Mavs alternate green//
Diddy will design the Dallas Mavericks’ alternate uniforms for the 2004-2005 season, representatives of the NBA team said Friday (December 5).
“The future is now,” Mavericks merchandising director Tim Henning said from Dallas. “We think he’s the perfect designer for this kind of project. He knows design, he knows what’s happening in terms of what we think is street-credible. Nobody out there is as equipped as Puff – and Sean John, specifically – to take on a project like this. [People] are wearing uniforms as fashion, and who’s the guy on top in urban fashion? P. Diddy.”

Wrigley Field is already built. It’s named. Changing Wrigley’s name would be like naming Fenway. Or Yankee Stadium. If the new owner wants to change Wrigley Field’s name to, say, Wal-mart Field…I BET the city of Chicago would have something to say.

Ummm, that was my point. William Wrigley built what we now know as Wrigley field. You build it, you get to name it. For the Cubs to talk about lost revenue streams… that man WAS their revenue stream for years. Without his largess, they probably don’t exist today.
As for the cash cow that is naming rights, I’m baffled. I can’t figure out why naming rights fees are going up when every time you change the name, the building edges closer and closer to becoming “whatever arena”. That place in Sunrise, FL, wherever the Panthers play… how many names has it gone through? Rental cars, Video stores… who actually keeps track anymore? I don’t, and I doubt I’m alone.

The ECHL is apparently doing it, too. I know the Gwinnett Gladiators played on pink ice this last weekend.
