Doesn’t It Seem Odd That ‘Punt’ Is Listed First?

ppk1968.JPG

Ah, Punt, Pass & Kick. Like many of you, I grew up watching many a PP&K competition televised during halftime of various NFL games. I was always struck by how the participants got to wear the uniform of their hometown NFL teams. But as a Long Island kid who liked the Giants but liked the 49ers even more (a preference rooted in a Ken Willard card that I got in a box of Corn Flakes when I was seven), I always wondered if the kids had any choice regarding the uniforms they wore. Like, what if you lived in Miami but hated the Dolphins? Could you choose, say, a Steelers uniform instead? If I entered (which I never did), would I be allowed to wear a 49ers uniform?

With that question and other uni-related issues in mind, I recently asked readers to contribute any uni-related PP&K experiences they’d had while growing up. More than 30 people responded, most of whom said they never got out of the first round and therefore only got to wear T-shirts and sweatpants. But some others advanced several rounds into the competition, and a few additional folks had other visual details to share.

Most of the participants mentioned that they had fond memories of the colorfully illustrated tips booklet that was distributed to participants each year at local Ford dealerships. Jeff Ash was kind enough to scan the 1969 edition (which features some amazing visuals) and arrange it into a slideshow, which you can see here. (Jeff also found this photo of a PP&K pin on the web, although he says, perhaps semi-bitterly, “I remember nothing about a pin.”)

Here’s a good selection of additional contributions (with big thanks to all who responded):

• From Brian Flynn: “I made it to Giants Stadium as the Long Island champion representing the Jets in 2003 and 2005. Each team in the NFL has representatives who won the local contests, so yes, you must wear the jersey of the team you are representing. Once you arrive at the stadium, you check in at the practice bubble outside. They give you a uniform, which consists of a replica team jersey and gray sweatpants with the PP&K logo. The jerseys are the same kind you would buy at the store, but instead of numbers they have the PP&K logo heat-pressed on the front and the team’s logo on the back. The second time I appeared, they also gave us a tan hat with the PPK logo. The organizers of the event were very picky about having us wear it when we went out onto the field during halftime. Some of the other participants didn’t want to wear the cap but were forced to. Another interesting note: The second time I was there, they added the Pepsi logo to the sweatpants. I still have the uniform somewhere in my house.”

• From Chris Janke: “After I won the Western Massachusetts portion of the PP&K, I received a jersey in the mail, along with the rules and tickets to the Patriots game I would be competing at. The jersey had the PP&K logo on the front with two Patriots logos on the sleeves and FNOB in an unusually small font size. The jersey was the mesh kind that high schools use for practice. If I remember correctly, the number given was either the year, or 00, or something I wasn’t happy with. I’d wanted to wear No. 4 for my favorite player, Brett Favre. I think I even wore a Packers hat with the PP&K jersey during the competition. I brought cleats with me for the competition but was told by a ‘higher up’ that I couldn’t wear them because of the ‘unfair advantage over the others’ that they would provide. I finished third in the group of about 12 but didn’t advance any further (because I couldn’t wear cleats, obviously).”

• From Doc Ginn: “My older brother won the sixth grade competition one year, I believe, and received a Cleveland Browns jacket (our ‘home’ team at the time, pre-Bengals). It included a Browns patch that was the shape of the NFL shield but had the ‘Brownie’ logo within. When I won my competition, my prize was a Green Bay “autographed” football. When I got home and opened the box, I found, to my dismay, that all the ‘autographs’ were mass-printed on the ball, and a couple of them smeared as I pulled the ball from the box the first time. In fact, I remember leaving the ball in the box, because whenever I tried to remove it, I would invariably smear one of the autographs. It wasn’t that the ink was wet — it just wouldn’t stick to the leather ball very well.”

• From Robert Eden: “I recall wearing simply jeans and a T-shirt to the local PP&K competitions. I wasn’t good enough to advance to the regionals (or whatever they called it), but one year I did finish in third place locally — here’s the trophy.

• From Tommy Turner: “I participated in 1967 in Danville, Virginia. We received a Redskins gumball helmet keychain.” Tommy also provided photos of some MacGregor PP&K helmets (the kind used in PP&K nationals from 1960 through 1968) and also some Rawlings PP&K models (used from 1969 through ’73).

• From Steve Mandich: “I just wore my regular clothes for the PP&K and didn’t advance beyond the first round. I don’t remember seeing any related memorabilia, but I do remember the Punt, Pass & Kick Library book series.”

• From Bob Tusso: “My friend Paul Umhoefer won this helmet in a PP&K contest for the area around Stoughton, Wisconsin, in about 1965, when he was about 10 years old. He got second place, and seems to think that first place got a helmet and the chance to compete in a statewide contest. He doesn’t have the facemask for it anymore.”

• From Lee Whitaker: “I participated in my local competition (Paoli, Pennsylvania) in the mid-’70s. I won my age group at the local competition and advanced to the district final, where I finished fourth. For the local event, I competed in my Pop Warner uniform (think classic Patriots with red jersey and red pants), because the PP&K was held following our game. The local ‘awards’ ceremony was held in the showroom of the local Ford dealership, where I got to shake the sales manager’s hand and get my picture taken with Bill Bergey (#66) of the Eagles.”

• And from David Murphy: “My dad entered me in PP&K back around 1970. I was no athlete, but it made my day when my placekick sailed low but good enough for third place in my age group. ”¦ The kids who made the regional competitions wore those replica unis, complete with colored socks. They even wore replica helmets! To this day, I’m a sucker for those helmets whenever I see one selling for a dollar at a thrift store. Got dozens in my attic.”

Great stuff, people. Thanks for sharing.

Victory Lap: Got a note early this morning from Giants equipment director Joe Skiba that I thought you’d all like to see:

I just wanted to thank the Uni Watch fans out there for an incredible season. It means the world to me that fans out there pay attention to all the little details — and also important ones — that go into the equipment side of sports. Every day I read the web site and the blogs to learn what is being used and worn by athletes across the leagues. Hopefully I have made Giants fans out of you, and fans of mine as well (haha)! I hope you’ll share in the celebration of this tremendous win — you guys deserve it as well.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Remember those great old curling sweaters that I recently wrote about? Reader Graham Bakay reports that the vintage threads have been banned by the geniuses at the Alberta Curling Federation, who really need to get a ticket for the clue train. ”¦ Did you know that the Rams wore a jersey patch during home games in 1988? According to this page, the patch reads, “Drug use is life abuse” (nice find by Erik Little). ”¦ Good analysis here of how Nike botched its entry into the hockey market.

Good news… the link! Its interesting to see the difference in just one year.

Or maybe its just an East coast bias in the media.

If thats the case, that explains the lack of representation of some teams (Denver Broncos) in the Hall of Fame.

great stuff on the PP&K from UW readers…enjoyed the anecdotes and memories…perhaps the progeny of a reader will someday win the whole thing

and on an unrelated non-uni note, link

Can’t say I’ve become a Giants fan (although I was rooting for them), but I can say for sure that the name “Joe Skiba” crossed my mind more than once while watching the Super Bowl and noticing various equipment-related. So Joe, if you’re reading, thanks for sharing your insights and please continue to do so. And Paul, thanks for bringing it to us.

I seem to remember that one of the finalists of this year’s PP&K competition was the son of Bills’ HOF QB Jim Kelly. I seem to remember his son was wearing a Ravens jersey at the ceremony. I can’t imagine Jim Kelly’s son being a fan of any team other than the Bills, so I am guessing that the jersey may be of the team/area you are “representing.”

Just a guess on my part.

German football team St Pauli had a link a while back. Tasty.

I remember the patch – very red, white and blue. The NFL made the Rams stop wearing it because it had not been approved by the league.

It included a Browns patch that was the shape of the NFL shield but had the “Brownie” logo within.

    Any pictures?

OH! I HAVE to get a Giants Super Bowl hoodie! I might even get my initials embroidered on it. Or … better yet … get one, have Belichick’s initials embroidered and send it to him. :)

When the Pats won their first SB a few years back, everyone got a ring. Then when they one the second, not so many people did and so on. I had met the groundskeeper at a game and he let me wear that 1st SB ring, which fit perfectly. I hope Joe gets a ring as he is ceratinly a key person in the organization.

German football team St Pauli had a camouflage kit a while back. Tasty.

It is worth noting that it is in the team colors, unlike American examples.

Wonder if Joe Skiba happen to catch Paul’s last Page 2 column, and what he thought about the blue uni….

    Thanks for the contact links.

I’m very happy to see that Phil Hughes will be taking #34 instead of that ugly #65 he was saddled with last season. I know he likes the digit 5 (and I was going to suggest taking Clemens’ old #22 and just making sure to look only in the mirror when dressing), but let’s face it: those big ugly numbers that the Yankees have to give out really don’t sit well on their time-honored, traditional, always-awesome-looking uniforms.

It’s too bad so many great numbers are unavailable. I know it sounds like blasphemy but there are other ways to honor your past greats than banning future players from wearing their numbers.

He definitely will. I saw a story on some guy that is the team barber for the Patriots, and he even has a ring!!!! I bet Manny’s barber has a ring too. haha

    – It’s awesome that a fellow Uni-Watcher is going to get a Super Bowl ring! Congratulations again Joe!

    – Second of all, I must have been sick on the PP&K day, because I actually know someone here is Wisconsin who won the national championship in his age group probably about seven or so years ago. I remember he was a few years older than me in High School and was the QB, punter, and kicker for the football team.

    – And don’t know if it was mentioned before, so forgive me please if it was, but the girl who got “booed” for wearing a Pats jersey at a Colts game while representing the PP&K is getting honored by the link

The Falcons’ helmet on the cover of the PP&K booklet has two gold stripes running alongside of the white-black-white helmet stripe down the middle. I heard somewhere that they did this early on in the Falcons history in order to appeal to Georgia Tech fans (since the Falcons’ colors are identical to UGA’s). I’ve never seen it represented anywhere before, though. Very cool.

A little racing info with the seasons about to ramp up:
Dale Jr and adidas Unveil Three Stripe Race Suit at Daytona: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. will debut his new three stripes on February 17 at Daytona 500. Working closely with the adidas Innovation Team, they have created a race suit featuring advanced ClimaCool technology. With extreme temperatures in the car, ClimaCool will lower Dale Jr.’s body temperature and combat fatigue, allowing him to be more alert and responsive in those final laps. Two days prior to the debut of the three stripes on the track, Dale Jr.’s exclusive adidas fan gear will go on sale at The Sports Authority available first in Daytona. Dale Jr.’s official adidas fan apparel line, which includes a variety of men and women’s clothing such as t-shirts, jackets, hats and jerseys, will be available at The Sports Authority in Daytona on February 15 in conjunction with Speed Week. The fan collection features the same adidas ClimaCool technology that allows Dale Jr. to stay cool on the track.(adidas / Hill & Knowlton PR)(2-6-2008)

I’m kinda curious about that, too. Those guys look double-sharp! Any curling association should be proud to have a team that wears uniforms that look that good.

I think the only time I entered PPK was around 1966 or so. I don’t remember getting a tips booklet, although I may have. What I do remember getting is an official Cleveland Browns media guide, a pretty thick number with, IIRC, a page devoted to each member of the team, all the coaches and draft picks, you name it. With lots of photos and stats. At age 11, in an era where that kind of thing was not routinely available, it was about the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

The issue has to do with cresting — not clothing and the Koe Team has decided that they do not wish to change the crests on their retro outfits to meet the policy. This policy is consistent for any type of clothing and has nothing to do with the age or vintage.”

Considering that pretty much every curling team pays out of pocket to compete, sponsorship is very key to the teams. Pretty much everyone that plays competitively works a 9-to-5 job on top of that, and for the better teams, end up having to take leaves of absence from their jobs in order to compete, so that means less money to maintain their own lives to start with. Most of the money earned from sponsors, bonspiel winnings usually end up paying for travel, lodging and supplementing any income that is lost from taking time off at work.

You can get all high and mighty about logo creep in curling, but without it, you might never see a lot of top teams because they wouldn’t be able to compete. Most of these folks are paying out of their own pockets to play at the highest levels.

National Signing Day has a logo on ESPN! I want the official jersey! The official home cap, BP cap and alternate road cap!

I think there is a lot of hate for the black unis…spearheaded by Paul Lukas, the guy who writes Uni Watch for ESPN Page 2. I don’t mind them, for the reasons Matt brought up, but they’re probably my least favorite uniform. I’d be happy if they reserved them for one night a week (don’t want them wearing black on hot summer days) and featured the solid white and the pinstripes more.

Because, God knows, Red Sox fans would never do that to anyone wearing Yankee gear.

If she wore a Rangers sweater to a Devils game I’d boo.

    Speaking of the Mets…

As the demise of Shea Stadium looms, and we all hold out hope that the black uniforms and trim will be erased from the landscape along with it, it occurs to me that the club (and/or WFAN) will also need to revise its well-known “Meet the Mets” theme song.

The line: “Hot dogs, green grass, all out at Shea/Guaranteed to have a heck of a day” will obviously become inapplicable. The original line, “Bring the kiddies, bring your wife/Guaranteed to have the time of your life” is sexist and dated (which is probably why it changed when the song was updated in the ’80s), so that won’t do either.

Any suggestions for a new lyric?

Yeah, all team staff will get a ring, including PR reps and such. The rarities are the groundskeepers, janitors and vendors that the Pats gave rings too, as they work for the stadium and not the franchise itself.

Dale Jr. will be wearing an link this year with, you guessed it, 3 Stripes.

Dale Jr and adidas Unveil Three Stripe Race Suit at Daytona: Dale Jr. will debut his new three stripes on February 17 at Daytona 500. The fan collection features the same adidas ClimaCool technology that allows Dale Jr. to stay cool on the track.(adidas / Hill & Knowlton PR)(2-5-2008)

With Hockey Market Stagnant, Nike Seeks to Sell Equipment Unit

OTTAWA – It was just a little swoosh. But when Nike added its logo to gear by Bauer, a longtime Canadian maker of hockey equipment, “there was resistance,” said Terry Bovair, owner of the Fontaine Source for Sports in Peterborough, Ontario. “Some people did not buy the product.”

Here is another Blame It on Bettman…
Hockey needs an infusion of creativity and EDG jerseys and shootouts, etc. has not turned the game around…to say the least.

Rebuild the natural rivalries…Guess how many times the Chicago Blakhawks play the New York Rangers this year????

Okay. None is the right answer…yet, the Hawks wil play the Red Wings 8 fuckin times…ridiculous schedule. Time to create an O6 division where the Original Six teams play each other at least 4 times each…big markets in NY, Chi, Bos, Det and Tor…drive ratings and attendance way up… So simple, really.

Why is Nike selling their hockey equipment division? Because the NHL is broken.

    Game Off.

Less we forget the extra 20,000 seats in Yankee Stadium compared to Fenway. Its easy to sell out a stadium for a team that is really good year in and year out when you have less than 40,000 seats to fill.

Has anyone been on espn.com today? It’s National Signing Day and is the cover story on the website. Forget the story, check out the helmet in the picture. Be warned, it gets pretty ugly.

yay mets talk…albeit about the dark days.

listen, anyway. metsblog has a poll about the black uniforms. i strongly encourage anyone who objects to the black to head over there and vote in the poll, because mets management DOES pay attention to fan polls on metsblog! maybe this will be our chance to get the black out of the color scheme!

For those interested, yes, the curling sweaters appear to contravene the strict anti-logo-creep regs of the Alberta Curling Federation.

It’s not easy to summarize, but the ACF has a link that defines the legal sponsor logo and cresting rules (pp. 6-7, plus p. 31, which shows a diagram of the legal sponsor crest sizes and locations).

Digging from the archives, the best views of their crests are link and link.

So, how ironic! Spiffy retro unis laid low by logo creep. It’s uni-watch moment if there ever was one.

As a goalie, it didn’t really matter with Nike in the sport since they didn’t make goalie equipment. I did however get a pair of the white Federov skates as rollerblades and loved them.

I’m glad to see Nike leave hockey as in my mind, the only brands that should be allowed in hockey are CCM – Bauer – Vaughn – Brian’s – Sher Wood – Christian – Eagle – Easton. Mission and TPS are bubble brands simply becasue they’ve produced quality products thus far. Give them time and they might make it. RBK is nothing more than CCM with the RBK logo. I hear you. Been a goalie for about the same time and have only had three pairs of goalie skate. I did learn to skate with forward skates, but bought my first pair of goalie skates at Play It Again for $20. I got $25 for them 3 years later from the pro shop I bought my next pair from. I think I was in 7th grade at the time. That second pair lasted me until my sophomore year of college. I was so reluctant to get new skates that I had my ankel taped before every practice and game not because of a physical problem, but because my skates were falling apart at the seams and digging into my ankels. Now that I’m coaching and hardly ever get a chance to put the pads on, I have a feeling this third pair will last me many more years – they’re on they 6th right now.

Ten year old and hes diligently getting his toe out of the way? Looks like you have a future pele on your hands. WHen i was about that age (24 now) I had a coach who, after seeing a few too many toeballs literally, made us take off our cleats and play with just socks for 30 min, in October. DIdnt say many toeballs after that. When I was younger than that, I remember going to a sports store in Hicksville, I believe it was called Gold’s. Downstairs in the shoe department I came across the first, and only pair of toe Kicking shoes I’ve ever seen for sale. I remember putting it on and being amazed that there was a steel toe in them!!!!

If this TRULY were “link“, Garo, Kuchenburg, and Morrall wouldn’t be wearing circa 2007 Dolphins’ jerseys. Are you KIDDING me?

It’s a pretty clever commercial, otherwise.

The Rams wore the anti-drug patch for most of their home games (blue jerseys only) in the 1988 season at Anaheim Stadium, but not all, including no patch vs. the 49ers, Cardinals and Patriots in Sept-Oct ’88. As an earlier poster mentioned, the league did not approve the patch beforehand, and asked the team to stop wearing it.

So I was watching The Flintstones with my kids last night. Fred goes to night school (Princestone) and ends up being their quarterback on the football team. I am shocked that the leading vote-getter is the 1986 racing-stripe uniform. Back when the Expos, Indians, Mets and others cultivated that look, I was violently opposed to it. There were days of celebration as the violators of good taste eventually did away with the racing stripes.

I have a pair of Nike blades that are fantastic, thanks.[/quote]
Yeah, I too have a pair of Nike skates that are almost 10 years old and still do fantastic.

Nike’s desire to leave hockey might serve as a cautionary tale to adidas’ decision to outfit Dale Earnhardt Jr. Nike is leaving hockey because it was capitalizing on a fad that eventually waned. (Oddly enough, apparently they’re making $$$ hand over fist with their Nike SB line of skateboarding shoes.) This may be why, though Nike cobbles drivers and pit crew members in NASCAR, they’ve stopped short of endorsing drivers or race teams, probably because growth in NASCAR’s popularity nationally is stagnating a bit, and they don’t want a repeat of their hockey problem. Like the NHL, NASCAR’s appeal is provincial in nature.

I’m really interested in knowing how some of you used skates for that many years. I played hockey all my life and HAD to get a new pair every year because they were completely ruined. It’s only now that I’ve been coaching for 4 years that I have had a pair of skates that long.
Also I always work CCM’s until Bauer came out with the Vapors, (the older Bauers we never wide enough) so I was using quality skates.

Being a goalie I didn’t have to worry about running out of steel from sharpening as I had them sharpened on average 3-4 times a year, now twice. Most forwards I knew simply got new steel and chassies for their skates if the boot still fit though. There was also the occasional trip to shoe repair if something waas seriously wrong with the boot and they weren’t ready to break in a new pair.

My hockey “career” ended before it ever began, so I ended up having a pair of skates to keep my skating legs fresh, I guess. I was never that good to begin with (still not), so I’m sure better players/skaters needed new blades a lot more often than I did. You know, it’s slightly amazing going to the rink on occasion and seeing older folks sporting the old-school, tubular hockey skates on the ice.

I was watching last year’s USA-Mexico soccer match on ESPN Classic, and I noticed something that was kinda odd. The US was in their home whites, with Tres Colores in their green alts. The Mexican goalie was wearing a red jersey, and the US keeper was in yellow. What caught me off guard was that the officials were also in yellow. Don’t the officials have to choose their gear to not clash with any of the players on the field, including the goalies?

I was nine in 1969 and won the local P,P & K competition…and man was setting foot on the moon that summer. It was a great time to be a kid. Seeing that booklet made me happy. Lovingly detailed illustrations. Which, at the time, is what I aspired to achieve. Thanks for this post.

Yepremian has a modern NFL Equipment jersey in the commercial and in most of this enclosed “Behind the Scenes” snippet, but for at least one moment (25 seconds), he has a more time-correct jersey with the one-color writing and shadow-less number. Really bizarre. I guarantee you the NFL wanted a couple of Reebok logos thrown in to appease the big sponsor.

Saturday is Truck Day in Boston.

Not only was Johan wearing pinstripes and blue hat at the press conference, but the Mets’ ticket ad in today’s NY Times also depicts Santana wearing pinstripes and blue (obvious even in B&W). Could it be that the Mets are going to pleasantly surprise us by going with the “classic” look as a nostalgic nod for the final season at Shea?

Not sure if this was mentioned already, I didn’t see it, but Arkansas State has decided on a new mascot after being forced to retire “Indians” – link. There are still talks going on about adding a color, such as “Red” in front of Wolves.

That’s a good catch, I don’t know how I missed it. Maybe it’s becuase the ref jersey was a very bright yellow and it differed from Timmy’s paler yellow? The same is the case right now though with the present game.

US v Mexico update: (1) Nike dropped the ball by not wrapping the pinstripes all the way around under the arms and the stripes cross through the NOB which makes it look like a typo (2)Adidas dropped the ball with the 3/4 length sleeves on Mexico with no obvious cuff (3) Landon still wearing those stupid mustard colored boots.

I don’t know – what is the deal with the shirt and tie under the jersey? My guess is that these guys want to look good for their press conference so they wear a suit and tie, then there’s the horribly repeated because of lack of imagination time honored tradition of being presented with the jersey by the GM, putting it on and taking photos in the media room and then throughout the stadium.

What would you rather see them in? The full jersey? A white undershirt under the jersey and a pair of jeans?

Sure it looks kind silly to wear a shirt and tie under a jersey, but given that the point of the event is to make an announcement and snap some photos, I don’t think it’s a big deal.
