Monday Morning Uni Watch: Super Bowl Edition

Okay, so maybe the red-trimmed uniforms aren’t so bad after all.

Pretty good game, right? After it was over, I went out and did what any Giants fan would do: overturned some cars, lit some bonfires, that sort of thing. Then I started drunk-dialing random phone numbers in Boston and singing “We Are the Champions” at the top of my lungs to whoever answered the phone. Good times.

Not much of a Super Bowl from a uni-related standpoint, unless you count David Tyree catching that ball on his helmet, or maybe that weird-ass Bud Lite commercial with the dude in the ABA-ish hoops uni.

Aside from those junctures, the closest thing to a Uni Watch moment was the odd sight of Bill Belichick in a red sweatshirt, instead of his usual gray. Several Pats fans e-mailed me early in the game and said they felt this was a bad omen. Brent Anthonisen went further and noted that Belichick used to wear a red windbreaker when he was the Giants’ defensive coordinator (including their victories in Super Bowls XXI and XXV), to make it easier for the defensive captain to find him on the sidelines and read his signals. So the Giants are undefeated in the Super Bowl when Belichick wears red on the sidelines.

I don’t know any of the Giants’ players personally, but two of them have always struck me as particularly decent people — class acts who make me proud to be a Giants fan. One of them is Amani Toomer, a 12-year veteran who never showboats, always respects the uniform, and has expressed more awareness and thoughtfulness about the non-sports world than most contemporary athletes. The other is Jeff Feagles, the oldest active player in the league and now the oldest to have appeared in a Super Bowl — his first, after 21 seasons. Good for him.

One guy I do know personally is equipment director Joe Skiba, who gave me all kinds of access this past season, fed me lots of inside info, and taught me lots of stuff (not the least of which was that I didn’t know nearly as much about the uni world as I thought I did). Enjoy the victory, Skeebs — you da man and all that.

But I’m happiest of all for my father, Irwin Lukas, a lifelong Giants fan who turned 84 years old two weeks ago (he actually attended one of their games in the Polo Grounds, which is where they played up until 1955). It was a treat to watch the game with him yesterday, to shout alongside him when Plaxico caught that touchdown pass, and to hug him when Brady’s final pass fell incomplete. Hope you had as much fun as I did, Pop.

Would have been nice to have a video montage of both teams season highights or old Super Bowl clips during Tom Petty’s “Running Down A Dream” song…somewhat disappointed…THEN I SWITCHED TO THE PUPPY BOWL!!!!!

For those who tivo-ed the game…With about 8 (or maybe 6) mins left in the 4th, there was a punt, and the HL (#101 I think) came over to the ref. The HL seemed to have on a new cap, as I thought I saw the hologram-like sticker under the brim. Anybody else see it? Anbody able to pull it up?

The only other uni-related thing I saw would have to be on the same play as the Tyree helmet-catch. Eli seemed to have put a little olive oil on his jersey to make that play happen. You think Skiba’s creative stitching patterns might help make the Giants a little more slippery than some other teams?

Was this the first SB in which the teams had a SB logo sticker on their helmets? I can’t recall if it was there the past few years.

Great game, and I’m glad the Giants won, but now we’ll have to put up with those insufferable ’72 Dolphins.
Was this the first SB in which the teams had a SB logo sticker on their helmets?
First time that happened was two years ago — SBXL, Steelers vs. Seahawks.

Paul, I thought of you and your pops immediately after the game was over. I found your tribute to him last week very touching and was hoping you guys would get your wish and have him see on more Giants’ title.

That’s a moment you’ll cherish forever. I was too young to remember the four 70s Steelers’ super bowls and the team lost SBXXX (thanks O’Donnell, yes, I’m still bitter!). Unfortunately, my pops passed away a few years before Super Bowl XL, but I do have a great memory with him in attending the ’94 MLB All-Star Game at Three Rivers Stadium together. I still get goose bumps when I see highlights from that game.

So congrads on your team winning, messing with the pursuit of perfection and most of all, congrads on a great moment spend with your father.

“That guy” is none other than Will Ferrell in character for his upcoming movie about, you guessed it, the ABA.

Bill Belichick was stupid for wearing a different sweatshirt. He went 18-0 with the grey one, why would you switch? The Pats ultimate downfall.

RE: Donyell Marshall

His jersey was actually pinned to his warmup shirt, so when he went to take off the shirt, the jersey came with it.

It could have been that way for months seeing as DM hasnt played until this past week.

Anyone else notice Moss’ gloves last night after his TD catch, the sheen was almost reflective.

Finally, Someone else who agrees about the Puppy Bowl! Gotta give Animal Planet props for having an announcer on the bowl who is someone special…ie Harry Kalas…

Paul, you’d be happy to know the first thing my girlfriend said when we sat down to watch the game was, “the white team’s helmets don’t match the rest of their uniforms.”

Long live the RED and white… wearing my 1956 road sam huff #70 at work today (complete with sleeves that reach my wrists!!!).

shared the game with my dad as well. we are a season ticket family since after WWII. my dad attended his first game in 1939. the hug you shared with your dad was no doubt what I felt as well!

maybe the giants open at home next season in the white and red!!

Beat me to it! The name of the movie is “Semi-Pro,” and the uniform is actually supposed to be from the Flint Tropics.

Of course, a careful observer would note that the gent in question is wearing his watch on his left hand, which means he’s right-handed, which means he’s not me.

Not all lefties wear their watch on their right wrist, Paul. I don’t, for example.

Hey, I watched the Puppy Bowl instead of that insipid pregame show … and then got to enjoy Tom Petty as well. Best of both worlds…

But a lot of lefties do, like me.

Thank you! I’ll be here all week! Be sure to tip your wait staff!
when did the giants get rid of the GIANTS on their helmets?
Wasn’t it 2000? I remember them changing their uniforms the same season they went to the Super Bowl.

My only Super Bowl bet won right there! I put $5 on Runnin Down a Dream being the closer, 2-1 odds makes my beer free. That combined with watchin the Pats lose amkes for a pretty good Sunday. Btw, showed the whole party the photoshopped Giants away unis, they were overwhelmingly favored.

Long time reader, first time poster. First off Im glad the Giants won, but damn do I dread listening to Mercury Morris.
Next the real reason I came, does anyone had a pic of Patriots LB Adalius Thomas from last nights game? Im pretty sure it was him, if it wasn’t please correct me, but he had on 2 different colors of gloves last night. The one hand looked like it was maybe a black and white glove, while the other was clearly all red. any help?

Not Super Bowl related:

In the Rangers-Devils game on Friday night, one of the refs was wearing black pants with a white (or grey) stripe down the side. Couldn’t find any photos or any mention of it in the coverage of the game, but I assume it was a case of lost luggage.

Haha. My girlfriend asked me if those are their normal road jerseys and when I asked why she said whats with all the red.

Another non Super Bowl related one here. Sorry!

England’s football team launched their link today. So far so unimpressed…

Not being a Giants fan I have not paid much attention to their uni, outside of what goes on in this blog, so over the past month I have been pretty much forced to watch them. That being said all I can say is that it is time to revisit the thinking behind the curved nameplate. It just looks terrible!

They are not flush with the jersey, the curve doesn’t match seams…it’s a mess. These jerseys have morphed away from the initial jersey pattern that made them work originally. I have seen at least 3 different style jerseys out there now. One of which being Eli Manning’s who’s jersey features a seam that goes straight along his back just like most NFL jerseys….making the curved nameplate look, well, stupid. It officially no longer falls into the “is it good” category.

Paul, pull some strings with your man over there and get him to straighten things out…literally

I know that I posted this last night, but I consider this mighty noteworthy. The 8’s on the jersey of Randy Moss were right side up.

Has this been the case all through the playoffs, or just the Super Bowl. If it was just for the big game, then it’s just as significant as Really Angry Homeless Man’s sweatshirt.

Also Kavika(spelling) Mitchell, 55 of the Giants was wearing all red Nike Air Zoom Assassin cleats in the first half.

Second half, he wore all black Nike cleats, seemingly next year’s Speed Vapors.

Any Pics?

By the Way, Thomas, Wilfork, and many of the Pats have been wearing two different colored gloves all season.

So just before I went to bostonglobe.com, I was thinking about a “The Day The Music Died” headline…as I have written headlines andcopy as a career in the past.

Sure enough..

“There’ll be no Hub parade on Super Tuesday. No commemorative books about “Path to Perfection.” In New England, the church bells all are broken.”

Paul, I hate to get all mushy here but what a great moment it must have been with your father. Some people say “it’s only a sport” or they can’t understand why people make sports such a large part of our lives. Moments like that are what it’s all about. Sure we love the competition, we love participating, and we love watching sports. But sports can bring people closer together. It can bring fathers and sons closer together. It can bring brothers, sisters, mothers, friends together with a common bond, and ultimately, that’s why we’re all here.

And on a funny note, I too had numerous phone calls from friends and family asking about:
*Green Dots
*#21 Decals
*#91 Decals

Not only was Angry Homeless Guy wearing red, his sweatshirt did not have the “BB” either.

Changing the subject to the above-mentioned “leagues who have retired numbers for officials”, I think the National League retured #1 for many years, as I never saw an umpire wearing it in the 1980s and 1990s. Supposedly they “retired” it not for anyone who actually had #1, but instead they picked three great umpires — I think Bill Klem was one, and I want to say that Jocko Conlan and Al Barlick are the other two, maybe — and arbitrarily banned the first three numbers from the sleeves of current umpires.

Not sure what they do now that the two leagues’ umpiring systems have merged. Anyone know?

Congratulations Paul. No one gave them a chance. I’m proud as heck of Eli right now, continuing the streak of Manning excellence.

Those Red road unis link looked better

I am wondering too about COrey Websters child wearing a throwback Pats uni. I did some research, and Corey went to LSU, so it can’t be a college jersey she was wearing. Maybe there’s more too this than just the odd quirk. OR her mom is a die hard Pats fan…that’s the only ting I could think of. Way to show support to DADDY!

Webster played at LSU as did the late Marquise Hill of the Patriots, (91 decals). Perhaps the jersey was to honor him? Great jesture nonetheless. If so, I’m sure Daddy would have been fine with it. I definitely would have been.

Pretty good game, right?

If you were a Giants fan…Last night’s Super Bowl was like an NBA game…tune in for the last five minutes and you will have not missed a thing. Snoozer.

Paul,
Just wondering – what Giants road jerseys do you like better – the current ones or the ones that debuted in 2000 with the red numbers with blue trim?

One quick comment regarding the helmets last night. Can the NFL fit one more decal on the helmets? A quick count, NFL shield, Super Bowl XLII logo, side logos, U.S. flag, memorial decals, warning decal from manufacturer, uni numbers, and lastly, the green dot. Not including neck bumpers or nose bumpers. Looked like a Senior Bowl game.

I am sure this has been covered before, but don’t the Pats have two Brady players? Kyle and that other guy. I thought NFL rules required an initial with the NOB if two players had the same last name?

Did anyone catch the link commercial on the NFL Network after the game? The ’72 Dolphins had players sporting 3 different Miami uniforms. They really couldn’t find a way to get replicas from ’72 for everybody???

The Patriots tried to do the same thing (have Belichick wear a different sweatshirt to move more merchandise) in the Colts Monday Night game in 2005. They lost that one too.

I’m a Pats fan and knew the game was over as soon as I saw Belichick’s sweatshirt. Why don’t NFL teams understand this kind of detail is important?
Changing the subject to the above-mentioned “leagues who have retired numbers for officials”, I think the National League retured #1 for many years, as I never saw an umpire wearing it in the 1980s and 1990s. According to the umpire roster on mlb.com, numbers 15 & 40 were not in use in 2007, as well as #42 (assumably for Jackie Robinson). 15 was worn by Joe Brinkman before he retired, so I believe it’s not a case of being retired, just not used (I don’t remember who used #40). There are a lot of “higher” numbers not in use, but prior to the merge, the numbers didn’t go that high.

I do remember that for years after John McSherry died on the field no one used #10, but that’s not the case anymore.

Also, Bruce Dreckman used #1 this past year, so it’s not retired.

Whoa,

Check out this pic of link.

The 8 in his TV Number seems to be upside down. Is this just a norm with the Pats?

So I was watching the game last night with some friends and my roommate turned to me and asked, “so what is up with green dot on Manning’s helmet?”. A few minutes later she turned to me and said…”why does that player have two numbers on the back of his helmet?” Obviously she isn’t a fan of Uni Watch like I am :)

After Moss’s TD catch late in the game, FOX showed Moss on the sidelines without his helmet on and the skullcap he was wearing had a little logo on the front. In the brief glance I had, I could swear it was a Raiders’ logo. I don’t have any screen grabs to confirm this, though. Can anyone confirm this, or was it some other logo he was wearing?

I was as irritated in the past week as I was before the Rose Bowl in 2006 when ESPN ran special after special asking where USC’s team that year ranked in history. Don’t they realize that kind of story is just going to tick off the opposition and lead to a big upset?

I didn’t switch to the Puppy Bowl during halftime because I actually watched the entire Puppy Bowl from 3:00-6:00. (well, not the entire Puppy Bowl, but for several minutes here and there in between doing other things). They actually aired it 3 times, at 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00.

The replayed SBVII on the NFL network this weekend. Even the 72 Dolphins uniforms didn’t match, some sleeves had stripes some didn’t, Grease, Czonka, and a couple others had full sleeves with no stripes.

As a Bears fan I didn’t care who won last night, but part of me was pulling for the Giants as a high school classmate, Offensive Lineman #66 David Deihl, was playing in the game. Deihl was a year ahead of me, but we knew each other as we had a class or two together and while it was hard not to know who the giant (no pun intended) kid walking around the halls was, but I was on the hockey team and people tended to know who I was.

Either way, I googled Dehil today and looked at the pictures and I came across one of him in front of his locker. What I found really awsome was the fact that he was wearing a t-shirt from our alma mater, not some Giants issued shirt.

I know, bit off base, but something that entertained me this morning as 5 inches of snow is falling here in Minneapolis.

As a Giant fan myself I don’t get the Patriot bashing. They are a very good team and being good does not make them arrogant. It just looks that way when a team wins a game and walks off the field with a grin on their face.If that was true I am very arrogant this morning. Just can’t get the smile off today. I rooted for the Pats all the way through the playoffs because I wanted the best team to be in the championship so nobody could say that whoever won got lucky because they didn’t have to play the Patriots. And I’m glad thats how it turned out. The Patriots were very respectful of the G-men and I think they have a lot of respect for the Pats.

Seriously… if the pats had won last night, they’d go down in the books as the best flag-football team of all time. They play in a fast era where nobody is allowed to touch anybody. You want great teams? Dallas, san fran, and of course, the steelers! At least those teams actually played football back in the day.

Yeah, he WAS wearing the raiders logo… also, he had on buckner’s Chicago cubs glove underneath his receiving gloves!!!

These were not “little things” in regards to the differences of the jerseys in Super Bowl VII. The jerseys with sleeve stripes were (best guess by the TV number style) Sand-Knit and the “non-striped” jerseys were most likely Wilson. Not a very little difference by today’s standard of uniformity.

I’d take that over a 42-35 game any day of the week, especially Sundays. Thanks Gints, for bringing respect back to the NFC!

It may only annoy me but I thought the “championship” T’s worn by the Giants post game were a bit over the top. Don’t know if this has been spotted already, but an article in my local paper here in Glasgow ran a feature last week on Tynes and his Scots roots. The full page pic they ran with showed Tynes with what looked like a backwards NY on his helmet bumper, I’ve been scouring websites for a copy of the pic, but can’t find it anywhere. I think it was from the NFC Championship game but all the pics I’ve seen of that his logo is right, maybe it fell off and he stuck it back on himself? I’m gonna try and get hold of a copy of the paper in question (Thursdays Daily Record I think) and scan the pic. It’s not just a lazy mirrored pic by the paper either, because all the other logos and numbers were correct, just the 3d bumper logo.

The stripes don’t go all the way around because there is actualy a flap there where players can unzip the breezer pant leg. As a player I never understood this as the rules state they’re supposed to be zippered up at all times, so it’s not like you can (are supposed to) leave them open for some more air circulation on your balls.

I did play with one guy who it made sense for though as he’d get all his equipment on, skates too before putting his breezers on. Because skates are a bit clunky to get through a breezer leg, being able to open them up kept him from shreding his breezers with his skate blade.

If you look close enough at goalie breezers the stripes doen’t go all the way around, but that’s because a different material is used on the inner leg and I’ve been told that the stitching for the stripes doesn’t last long so instead of having a crappy looking stripe that’ sshreding and falling off, they leave it off that patch.

No NHL referee has worn #1 since Bruce Hood retired. The NHL refs used to wear numbers in order of their seniority, moving up one every time someone retired, and when Hood finally retired after years of wearing #1, they decided to honour him by always making him “#1” on the seniority list.

I gotta agree. If you don’t like watching Matt Light, the hero of the Patriot’s O-Line, get flustered having to deal with Osi all night, you don’t like football.
Yeah I like watching college games where it’s 48-42 and all, but this was solid football being played the entire game. This was definitely one of the best football games I’ve ever seen…and it’s nice to have a Superbowl that’s close as oppose to most of the blowouts that happen. Even when the score is close, it’s usually not a good game.

Would you really take Pats-Panthers over this? And not just for Wardrobe Malfunctions?

Oh..and get the Giants some blue pants or something..maybe even just blue socks..but either way..we win! haha.

It’s not a stereotype — there’s a practical basis for it: Most people learn to wear a watch on the non-dominant hand because they find it easier to use their dominant hand to fiddle with the strap and buckle.

Ruback attended the same high school as me but graduated 8 years prior to me. When I entered the high school, he was hired to teach, and coach JV Football and Baseball. It turns out that of the 15 years that I ended up playing organized football, the year that I played directly for him was by far, my favorite.
He crafted a tremendous playbook but wasn’t above watching Sportscenter the morning of a game and teaching us our parts in the parking lot or on the bus.
And obviously, he is a PR genius. He brought our low-income, largely immigrant community to our games in droves!

Coincidentally, he is also a Uni-nerd. Hopefully, with some guidance, he might someday “get it”.

all part of easton’s grand plan to make them 9% faster than rbk
The stripes don’t go all the way around because there is actualy a flap there where players can unzip the breezer pant leg. As a player I never understood this as the rules state they’re supposed to be zippered up at all times, so it’s not like you can (are supposed to) leave them open for some more air circulation on your balls.

I did play with one guy who it made sense for though as he’d get all his equipment on, skates too before putting his breezers on. Because skates are a bit clunky to get through a breezer leg, being able to open them up kept him from shreding his breezers with his skate blade.

If you look close enough at goalie breezers the stripes doen’t go all the way around, but that’s because a different material is used on the inner leg and I’ve been told that the stitching for the stripes doesn’t last long so instead of having a crappy looking stripe that’ sshreding and falling off, they leave it off that patch.
some brands have the zippers, some don’t. It looks like those don’t. Instead they have a stretch fabric there that would make putting the stripes on it impossible without ruining the stretch. I suppose they could sublimate the pattern on, but that would be a lot of trouble and probably wouldn’t match too well.

BTW, putting skates and shin guards on before the pants makes it easier to attach the sock to your jock with the velcro tab, and makes it easier to bend over to tie your skate. That’s the way to go…

I’m not going to do the math, but when states like California didn’t even get baseball till the late 50’s, there’s a reason they don’t have as many championships as New York.

The analogy I’m going for is akin to when “experts” say that 60% of all traffic accidents happen within 20 miles of your home. Well, I would imagine that 60% of your driving occurs within 20 miles of your home as well.

So what I would do (if you’re serious about finding the most championships per state) is break it down (like you started to) and try to find the avg championships per year (per state) and rank them that way.

Re: the disneyland card.

Clearly anyone could remember 4 words if that job is their sole purpose for waking up that day.

The reason for the card is to hold it in the player’s face as he is celebrating his biggest achievement ever, hoping he will read it and it will remind him to say the line for the commercial. They probably were briefed on this possibility earlier in the week and could easily forget all about it given the events of the past few hours.

If they dont get someone to remember to say it, they lose the post-game celebration moment that is essential to what the commercial is trying to convey.

This is actually about the longest NY has gone without a title since the ’60s. The last one was the 2000 Yankees (7 years), unless you count the Devils, in which case it’s 4 years (2002-03).

Let’s see…

2007 Giants
2002-03 Devils
2000 Yankees
1999-2000 Devils
1999 Yankees
1998 Yankees
1996 Yankees
1995 Devils
1993-94 Rangers
1990 Giants
1986 Giants
1986 Mets
1982-83 Islanders
1981-82 Islanders
1980-81 Islanders
1979-80 Islanders
1978 Yankees
1977 Yankees
1973 Knicks
1970 Knicks
1969 Mets
1968 Jets
1962 Yankees

1961 Yankees
1958 Yankees
1956 Giants (NFL)
1956 Yankees
1955 Dodgers
1954 Giants (MLB)
1953 Yankees
1952 Yankees
1951 Yankees
1950 Yankees
1949 Yankees
1947 Yankees
1943 Yankees
1941 Yankees
1939-40 Rangers
1939 Yankees
1938 Giants (NFL)
1938 Yankees
1937 Yankees
1936 Yankees
1934 Giants (NFL)
1932 Yankees
1928 Yankees
1927 Giants (NFL)
1927 Yankees
1923 Yankees
1922 Giants (MLB)
1921 Giants (MLB)

Look at that. The NY area has gone more than 4 years without a championship in one sport or another only once since 1920. Twice if you don’t count the Devils’ Stanley Cup in ’03. If you don’t count the Devils, the 7 years between the Yankees’ WS in 2000 and the Giants’ win last night is the longest drought New York has endured since Woodrow Wilson was president. Wow.

Like I always say, you get a lot more accomplished by being ticked off and having Vince Young as your quarterback than you do by just being ticked off.

So the times when there hasn’t been an upset, the other team just didn’t get ticked off enough?

That’s why I found the slogan for this year’s Super Bowl to be so ridiculous: “Who Wants It More?” I guess the Patriots didn’t want it. Yeah, that must be it. The Giants just wanted it more. Like if link, the guys at Yeshiva just didn’t want it enough? That’s why?

Football is a simple game that too many people like to try to complicate unnecessarily. You block better, you tackle better, you control the line of scrimmage, you don’t turn the ball over and you protect your quarterback and hit theirs, you have a better chance of winning. Lombardi knew how simple it was. “Bulletin board material” and “Who Wants it More?” and “guts, class, determination,” all that stuff is nice and all. But that ain’t why you win football games.

Is this guy a media darling or what? Doesn’t want to look like he took the hits for the photos/NFL film coverage?
I’m going to guess he wanted to keep one of the jerseys if they won, and I’m guessing the Hall of Fame would have wanted one had they won as well. Makes sense to have more than one.

Didn’t Pete Roze take to changing various parts of his clothes multiple times during a game when he was chasing the hit record? For purely historic and archival purposes, I’m sure.
During a Giants kick off to Patriots they showed a close up on the ball. In the top right corner, just above the laces, i noticed the initials MK. Does anyone recall seeing this?? If so anyone know the story behind it?
I think it was MC, not MK. Mike Carey. The referee initials the balls before the game (maybe just the kicking balls, but I think they put “K” on those as well) to show that he has inspected them and that they’re kosher and so no one tries to sneak in an unapproved ball that’s better for passing or kicking or whatever.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned (and probably beat to death). The team in white jerseys has now won three straight Super Bowls. Does anyone know the overall records of the white/dark teams?

all part of easton’s grand plan to make them 9% faster than rbk

That’s the way to go…
I submit perhaps the biggest offender in the league, link. I looks like crap, but there are certainly guys that do it. I alway left them half-zippered when I played in college, just to get a little air in there.

In regard to Belichick’s red sweatshirt, did anyone else notice what looked like a strip of tape on the back of the sweatshirt (lower right side)? I agree with everyone who said that this was not a very exciting football game. I’m all for a good defensive battle, but only if the offenses are performing well enough too. Both QBs seemed to struggle all night, at least until the last five minutes. This is the Super Bowl, not Lions-Cardinals in the preseason; both teams should be ready to play their hearts out, and execute well. I don’t think there’s hating here. Only a couple of people didn’t like it, as is their right. In my personal experience, I was watching with nine other people — none of us Giants or Patriots fans, but rooting for the underdogs anyway — and we all thought it was an excellent game. I even remember turning to my girlfriend and saying, “This is the best Superbowl I have ever seen,” and her nodding in agreement.

That said, we did go to K-Mart afterward, and a guy approached us asking who won the Superbowl. Turns out he fell asleep halfway through. So, you know … different strokes.
Super Bowl XLII was one of the GREATEST Super Bowls ever played. I was expecting a shoot out but what we got was even better. I have come across a few people that didn’t enjoy the game for the same reasons, low scoring. A vast majority enjoyed the game though…don’t let that small percentage who didn’t enjoy it fool you.

What made it a great game, in my opinion, is that there were so many converted second- and third-down plays, very few three-and-outs. It wasn’t a game with no offense — it was just that the defenses bent without breaking. And the Giants’ pass rush was so relentless, which provided an added element of drama — all that pressure on the league’s best QB.

But he wasn’t the best QB yesterday.

I don’t know why I never noticed this until now, but on the main page of link on the right, they show the 3 logos of NASCAR’s top series…and each one has a different shape/orientation. It appears that the left 2 logos, the Sprint Cup and the Nationwide Series (don’t even get me started on the whole “branded league” thing) are essentially the same ellipse, just slanted in different directions, and the right logo (Craftsman Truck Series) is a standard oval. It’s really annoying.

But this isn’t how it was last year…the 3 logos were at least somewhat consistent. The Sprint Cup, formerly the Nextel Cup, used link. And the Nationwide Series, formerly the Busch Series, used link. Both USED to be more consistent in shape and design to the past and present link. I figured when designing new logos, they would have at least known that continuity makes brand identification easier, and since that’s obviously what they’re all about, it seems kinda odd…and very annoying.

that’s STILL their official logo…only the helmet has the ‘ny’ in lieu of the italic giants
Actually… they had link in the endzone.

We have a lot of traditional Irish foods along with some favorites like Irish Nachos (Guinness cheese sauce with sour cream, bacon, chives, and sprinkled with cheddar), Shepard’s Pie, Reuben sandwich, and the Highlander (shredded beef and pork). Chef Paula also makes a damn fine fish fry.

In a few weeks I get to go back to work, and my first order of business is to re-do the website a bit. I have been there a year and a half and I’m not even on the damn site yet! Oh well, hopefully this snow melts soon so we can golf here in Wisconsin soon. But with another foot of snow predicted for the souther Wisconsin area in the next few days, we won’t be hitting the links for a while. But, I do have a lot of merchandising to do, which means I will have some great pics of our line up in the golf shop this year.

Well, that counts a little bit I guess. I am not yet in the “team members” portion of the web site yet. And I can’t believe Theran is “ahead” of me on that list of giving lessons. I bet that was his doing. Technically I’m the 1st assistant and he is the 2nd. Oh well, I’ll change it soon :)

Don’t know if anyone has posted this yet, but in the new ESPN the mag, it shows a pic of Victor Thompson the guy who is getting the pats helmet tatted on his head. He has an American flag on the bottom right, the number 12 in the bottom middle, and of course THE GREEN DOT.

Couple other things i’m after reading some earlier posts. I too am a lefty who wears his watch on his left wrist. Also about Spike Lee’s glasses not having glass, I’m pretty sure Drew Carey’s glasses are also sans glass, they are just a prop.

this website is gorgeous… just dont let this guy ever plan one of those concept helmets… other then that its great.

They’ll love that advertisment in Romania!

Nicole Haase was at a hockey game in Madison recently and momentarily thought this guy might be me (no doubt because of the stripes). Of course, a careful observer would note that the gent in question is wearing his watch on his left hand, which means he’s right-handed, which means he’s not me.

Speaking of the Wisconsin hockey game vs. Minnesota-Duluth, I was thumbing through UMD’s media guide and noticed that on Dec 29, 1977 the Bulldog’s had to play a game wearing HS (Eveleth Golden Bears) sweaters because their new home ones hadn’t arrived in time for the game.

”That guy” is none other than Will Ferrell in character for his upcoming movie about, you guessed it, the ABA.
Beat me to it! The name of the movie is “Semi-Pro,” and the uniform is actually supposed to be from the Flint Tropics.
The funny part of the whole spot is that Flint is nowhere near the Tropics. It’s in the middle of the Michigan mitten. The Flint Tropics were not a real team in the ABA.
I got some dumb Wisconsin nicknames for ya. Rhinelander is the Hodags. A mythical creature found only in Rhinelander. Eau Claire is the Old Abes (their mascot is a bird or something).
“A bird or something”? You obviously didn’t take History in a Wisconsin grade school….

I don’t have a picture of it, but I know for sure that XLII was stitched or printed onto the blue fumble beanbag that the refs tossed out. I’m pretty sure it was clearly visible on the Brady fumble at the end of the first half.
