Nate Robinson, Reporting For Sparring Duty

naterobinsonl

Presumably, Nate Robinson of the Knicks wears rib protection because the NBA is a rough league. But I wonder if he wears it under his street clothes, too? “Hi, I’m Nate Robinson. I play for the Knicks.” *WHACK!*

Even if Robinson doesn’t wear it in public, I know one member of the organizaton who probably should.

Watch the ribs today. — Bryan

If things keep going the way they’ve been going in New York, Isiah may want to sport something like link on the bench.

At first glance I was pretty sure Nate Robinson was rockin some camo sleeves. I might try to hide too if I played for the knicks

I know it’s “just a joke”, but if you drop the rabid fan mentality and take a step back and think about things rationally, it’s sad that jokes are made about physically hurting or even killing athletes/coaches/owners because of a poor win/loss record or poor performance. Players don’t try to play poorly. For various reasons, just like us normal people, players go into slumps or certain teams just fail to gel or whatever. It’s just a sports game there for your viewing entertainment. If you’re not satisfied, just find something else to do or stop following your team so closely temporarily or something.

I enjoy a joke as much as the next guy, but sorry, I just can’t see the fun in something as serious as death/injury to someone who hasn’t done anything to you except not fulfill your desire for your team to win a game.

    uhhh….John….you’re joking right?! Lighten up.

Allen Iverson wears a similar undershirt with padding, uncovered on this very blog, his is around the chest area. I will look for the picture.

The person who needs body armor is jim Dolan. Forget Isiah. The Dolan family is the ultimate in corporate greed. Back in the late 80’s they blacked-out all of Long Island for an entire season of Knicks and Rangers, bouth the two teams and have gone on to futility for the past decade, all while selling out the building that they pay no property tax on, while reaping millions of dollars in profit, some of which go to paying off sex harassment charges.

Nope Cathy, not joking. I’m American, and have lived in Japan for quite a while. I don’t go along with the whole “Japan is safe” thing, but my point is that in this culture and I’m sure lots of other cultures, jokes or any other references are just not made about physical violence toward athletes just because they f up or suck. What have they done to you, except lose a game? They deserve to be attacked by a stranger for that?

    Yeah, I know “it’s just a joke”.

But when you see that kind of mindset, even if it’s a joke, from the outside, you kinda gradually realize that “yeah, that’s kind of sad that we do that.” As I said, I goof around all the time, and take life too lightly probably. It’s just that jokes can be made without the punchline being that the person needs to be careful about getting attacked or killed.

Dude, in a perfect world, we probably wouldn’t have professional sports to begin with (or at least we wouldn’t have a system in which athletes make so much freakin’ money). We also wouldn’t have really funny jokes that just happen to be racist, sexist, or otherwise insensitive, nor would we have a slew of other stuff. That’s life — jeez.

Oh, and in a perfect world we wouldn’t have NBA GM/coaches who are found liable for sexual harrassment and who think it’s OK for a black man to call a black woman “bitch” (which might explain why some people feel less than kindly about said GM/coach — not just because he puts a losing product on the court).
Nope Cathy, not joking. I’m American, and have lived in Japan for quite a while. just a joke…it’d be different if people did get killed for having a bad record in sports…but again, just a JOKE….get over yourself…if you can’t find the humor in it….you’ve got bigger problems.

Personally, I found the “Hi I’m Nate Robinson, I play for the Knicks” thing hilarious….if anything, he should claim to play for the Nets or something, that or say he at least plays for the Rangers.

I hope I am not sounding like I don’t know anything, but are the numbers on the shoulders mandatory on NFL jerseys ? And if so does anyone know how that came into being?
    Thanks

bryan when i play baseketball i wear rib pads and it helped beacuase one time when i didnt i toook and elbow to the rib and crACKED a rib

don’t columbian soccer players get killed for scoring own goals? and our society is bad?

it’s probably a good thing that we stop at the joking stage and don’t follow through with what the jokes suggest.

I’m just stating my opinion, that’s all. I’m not full of myself, I don’t have problems, I’m not seeking a perfect world, and I’m not a peace monger or a pro-lifer or a member of Greenpeace or anything either. I’m all for punishment for people who do something wrong or hurt somebody else first. I’m just pointing out that I’ve come to realize that in a way, it’s kinda sad that so many people take something as unimportant as sports so seriously, and something as important as life so lightly, that they can casually make jokes like this. I said that I’ve noticed this living in a culture where that type of joke just does not ever come to a person’s mind, and also just by growing up and having kids, experiencing directly or indirectly things like death, accidents, miscarriages, etc. You gradually learn how valuable life is. But OK, I’ll play:

Good thing the Dolphins won that one game, huh? Or else they woulda needed to actually wear dolphin costumes out to their cars after the last game, because nobody’d shoot into a crowd of cute little dolphins, right? Pretty funny, yah?

And oh, Paul? Why wouldn’t there be pro sports in a perfect world? Wouldn’t they be one of the things that would make a perfect world? And jokes that happen to be racist, sexist, whatever, which I can and do laugh at, and did not even mention one syllable about, usually don’t involve the attacking or killing of the subject. Finally, you were present at all meetings between Isiah and his accuser? People of all genders, sexes, races, religions, etc. call each other names all the time. Regardless of the verdict, who knows what all actually went on between those two? Any anyway, so anyone who calls another person “bitch” deserves pummelling from any complete stranger on the street who wants to take a shot?

You know, I’m almost hoping for someone to ask about the green-dot helmets, UCLA’s “C”, or Dallas Clark’s helmet not have a US flag.

John, I think you are reading waaaay more into this than there actually is.

    On Uni Topic:
Can’t wait to see the game but the NYR-Montreal game earlier will present the best uni matchup of the day!

Wow, this is getting out of hand. Lets talk about the awesome Giants uniforms. The Super Bowl deserves to have a team wearing such classic, retro uniforms like the G-Men. And although it does look good when Paul made the red parts blue, I like how the red stands out from the blue helmet.
Lets hope for a close game and maybe even a HUGE upset!

Yep, they’re mandatory… once upon a time, shoulder/sleeve numbers were called “television numbers”; according to the link site, link and link were the last teams without shoulder/sleeve numbers, in 1961; and both teams did have numbers on the sides of the helmets.

Every pro football uni since link has featured numbers on the sleeves, moving to the link as sleeves disappeared.

Ish. Andres Escobar scored the own goal that resulted in Colombia being knocked out the 1994 World Cup.

He was shot dead on his return to Colombia and the own goal was widely cited as the reason, but it was more likely to have been a drug-related killing.

That’s a pretty weak response, Paul. All of those examples involve attacking and killing, the exact things I’m saying kind of ruin the jokes for me. And all of those people deserved the punishments they got (which I said was fine by me), because they harmed innocents first for no reason. And all of them involved physical evidence to support the crimes, not just one person’s word against another’s. How is it a straw man argument anyway? I said that even if he is 100% guilty of calling a person a bitch, does that mean he needs to wear protection against violence from people he did not call a bitch? And by extension, just so he’s not getting special attention for who he is, any person who calls any other person any of the hundreds of bad names in the book should need to wear protection against random attacks from people who don’t like that?

For the record: If anyone wants to say, “Lukas’s last column was so bad, he should be shot,” I’ll take no offense.

And if anyone wants to say, “That guy John should be shot too, for starting a really pointless thread,” I have no problem with that either.

Everyone will be happy to hear that I’m now going to get in my car and drive out to my parents’ place, where I’ll be watching the Super Bowl with my father (as my sports-oblivious mom inevitably makes comments like “Oh, is there a big game today?” and “So who’s playing?”). Go Big Blue!

Okay, I’ll ask. Whats up with the yellow “C” in UCLA on their basketball jerseys? Also-why do most pictures i’ve seen of USC cheerleaders have them holding up two fingers? Are they setting their goals a little low, saying “We’re number 2?”

I’m just trying to figure out why the operator of a message board site (for-profit, I believe, nonetheless) would get into it so heavy with one of his visitors. Other posters have been pretty good-spirited and civil – only you Paul have gotten touchy and sarcastic. I am legally (there is free speech, right?) and simply voicing an opinion. And to call my opinion pointless – well, it is an aspect of the original lead picture/post started by the operators of this website. Is that not allowed? I’m not requiring anyone to agree with it.

Seems to me an intelligent website operator/businessman would stay off his own boards (or at least keep his input to benign stuff) and let sarcastic comments be made by, and disagreements played out among, the visitors.

    Get it?

Shooting people bad, stripes good, right?

Anywho, I’ve been debating snagging myself a good jersey as a self-birthday present, and I’m thinking of getting this particular jersey: link . Yes, it’s a Phoenix Coyotes jersey, but I like how it looks, as well as it being an unusual team to root for. Is icejerseys.com a good place to buy from, or is three better online retailers?

Apparently we have a new friend to this site. A quick check of the previous posts shows that Paul did not call anyone’s arguement “pointless”. He used the term in a hypothetical comment. The bottom line in all of this is that this is a site for people who love uni related stuff…and most of us happen to be snarky with a side order of snide (snideky?). Anyhoo…we’re all big boys and girls, as are the athletes/coaches we rag on. No harm in suggesting (obviously) playfully that a certain individual better invest in body armor. If someone is offended by what they read in a blog comment section, the problem lies within that reader…not the poster.

Oh…and I won’t pretend to be the dude that settles this…if only I had THAT kind of power! :D

That’s funny; I just got done thinking that he was very restrained. The fact that you’re apparently serious is what really blows my mind. He’s not requiring anyone to agree with his opinion, either- I determined on my own that you need to lighten up.

    (Let’s see 18-1 !)

On a semi-related note, I had a friend who moved to Japan and after awhile his sense of humor became really weird. He would make jokes and people would take them literally and he’d have to give some weird explanation and the joke was ruined. Then he would misinterpret or not like most jokes he heard.

But then the joke would become how frustrating it was to him to make or get a joke and laughter was restored (at least for the rest of us).

I think it’s just sad how some people act like they have never heard a joke about a player or coach which references to hurting that person and decides that the best place to voice their opinion is on a message board based upon UNIFORMS!!

Get over yourself. We live in America, not Japan

Their customer service is good. Really good. It’s just that I probably won’t buy from again because my favorite line of theirs is the line of throwbacks, which seem to get more and more expensive. It’s to the point where I think their throwbacks are overpriced. Triple digits for a replica sweater? I couldn’t justify that. But if you think you have a good deal in front of you, go ahead and buy it from IceJerseys, because aside from the price tag, they won’t let you down.

I don’t think that is correct. The Bengals didn’t have TV numbers, on their sleeves or shoulders for a long, long time. I don’t think it was until 1978 or so before they used TV numbers.

The jerseys were made by Sand-Knit and had screened numbers, front and back. But the TV numbers were added later to the uniforms and were sewn on at a local sporting goods store along with the names on back.

Even on that NFL Uniforms site, it shows the Bengals w/o the TV numbers.

Try Jersey-Joe.com. Joe runs an OUTSTANDING business, is an avid UW supporter, and seems like a sild dude. He was also at Sheep Station last night and shared his french fries which earns mega brownie points in my book!

    Get it?
Just because you have “free speech”, that doesn’t mean someone else has to post, print, broadcast, etc., your opinion. Per the Bill of Rights, freedom of speech has to do with the GOVERNMENT limiting someone’s right to say something. Last time I checked, this is a private blog/message board, so Paul can choose to express is freedom of speech and delete a post or ban someone from posting if he doesn’t like their opinions (though as far as I know he never has). If you don’t like the way he operates his blog, then don’t read it. Or you can start your own blog, website, newspaper, radio station, etc., and express your opinion all you want.

The gold C is to highlight that it is UCLA’s 100th year of having a team. C is roman numeral for 100. USC’s “2” is actually a V. That is USC’s hand sign and it stands for Victory.

Phil.. you don’t know how good you’ve got it. Some of us live in NC (eck) and are transplants (where to find a CFL game? On one’s PC, by God) that have little to share… in NY you have it all, with an assload (stop and count them, you have em!) of championships…. So much bitching… so many titles. Other towns want to be you. Sit back, smoke a nice cigar, and relish it for once!

Everyone is pointing towards Bellichick and his choice of sweatshirt as being bad karma-wise. What about Moss and the 8? It was right side up tonight!

    Talk about messing with superstitions!

Maybe it’s perspective, but I thought that was a GREAT game! Congratulations to the Lukas nd Hecken families! Oh and the Maras and the Tisch family as well.

From a completely non-Giant and non-Patriot fan point of view… One of the best, if not the best, NFL games I’ve ever seen

Right behind every Grey Cup ever (ducks behind the sofa)…. But yeah, no seriously, damn fine game and congrats to the best team!

this might be the worst SB I have ever watched.

Agreed. It was like an NBA…tune in for the last three minutes and you’ll will see pretty much the whole enchilada…Did someone at Reebok go to the Billy “The Brain” Bellicheck and say hey Bill, Calvn Klein, things you should switch things around tonight and go with the alternate red hideous cutoff hooded sweatshirt for the 19-0?

    What a farce. Super Choke.
Carl Reuter on FOX 5 just now:

“Super Bowl 42, without question, the best ever.”
well the whole point of 42 is to be without question, I thought.

Joe Skiba will have quite a bit to talk about tomorrow, like how to get CHAMPAGNE OUT OF JERSEYS! GO BIG BLUE!!!!
Check out the gross error on link [hint: look at the helmets]. That just makes the night sweeter.
jesus…they actually fucked up BOTH helmets

Am I the only one noticing the championship t-shirts are cut to fit over the pads? Odd, Jeeves, odd.

little mentioned (or mentioned at all) factoid…

the giants and pats played each other in the last game of the pre-season, the regular season, AND the post-season

i doubt that has ever happened before

and the only one big blue won is the one that mattered
Hey Paul,

Still annoyed with the away jersey?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA post of the night.

wow…someone doesn’t know what “checking your work” means…

Because people who watch American Idol wouldn’t understand them.
hey graf (great meeting ya yesterday)…they’re not just celebrating in b-hurst…we’re rockin the shit out on lon-guy-land too!!!!

    fireworks every…horns blaring…cops arresting

this one was sweeter than XXV (wide right)…and that scramble by eli on “THE NEW DRIVE”…hells yeah baby!!!!
I would doubt that anything was crazier than here in Albany, which is pure Giants country because they hold training camp here. I can’t wait to see the crime blotter tom. morning.

Sorry, I should be shot for that comment.

I agree fully, it was a SWEET game, perhaps the best fourth quarter of football that I have ever seen (save the last second).

And thanks for those jersey shopping links, all!

During the final drive I was jumping up and down so much, I realized that I need to get back to the gym. Way to go and for Uncle Matt, GoooooooooooooooooGIANTS !!!!

Okay, I’ll ask. Whats up with the yellow “C” in UCLA on their basketball jerseys? Also-why do most pictures i’ve seen of USC cheerleaders have them holding up two fingers? Are they setting their goals a little low, saying “We’re number 2?”
The gold C is to highlight that it is UCLA’s 100th year of having a team. C is roman numeral for 100. USC’s “2” is actually a V. That is USC’s hand sign and it stands for Victory.
the v refers (allegedly) to the ancient trojans’ habit of cutting off the pointer finger of their captured enemies so they couldn’t fire the old bow and arrow. it’s a taunting thing.

    (after another phoner)
This just in. Mercury Morris played for the ’72 Dolphins. Anyone else know that?

And what the heck is that green dot all about?

I have never understood this either.

    P.T. Barnum was right.

Pay up. Deleting posts because they’re stupid isn’t in the playbook. We know because we videotaped the playbook during walk-through.
See, it is always about money.

    1) Please don’t put words in my mouth, Phil. 2) If you insist on putting words in my mouth, at least make sure that “Uni Watch” is two words, not one.

    Cheaters. Never. Win.
They’ve actually already won 3 times.

I am wondering too about COrey Websters child wearing a throwback Pats uni. I did some research, and Corey went to LSU, so it can’t be a college jersey she was wearing. Maybe there’s more too this than just the odd quirk. OR her mom is a die hard Pats fan…that’s the only ting I could think of. Way to show support to DADDY!
