Perhaps it’s because I’m old(ish), never really played basketball, and lack enthusiasm in general, but I’ve never figured out the jersey-popping thing. Yes, we know you play for the Celtics. Yes, we’re also quite excited about the way you stole the ball in the closing seconds on Friday to seal the win against your former team. And yes, again, we know you play for the Celtics.
Still, though, those jerseys are stretchy, almost impressively so. I tried that with my T-shirt (American Apparel 50/50) after we got the newspaper in on time last night. It was disappointingly lacking the snap-back I’m sure Garnett got with his performance-engineered fabric. It was a real sad scene all around … (sigh).
I’m gonna go watch my Matlock DVDs now. — Bryan

Don’t worry Bryan, I played in the late 70’s and 80’s and the jesreys were so tight then that you couldn’t wedge your thumbs into the armpits if you tried. If you did manage to do it, you might dislocate your thumbs.
A North Carolina (Tarheels) basketball-only museum is opening in Chapel Hill on Monday. The local newspaper coverage includes a flash link. There’s a few uni-shots in there.
#4 was the most interesting to me, as it shows a 1957 home jerysey with red stitching around the neck and arms. The accompanying link also mentions that Lennie Ronsenbluth’s (a member of the ’57 team) shorts had a red stripe around the waistband, but doesn’t include a picture. Interesting. Anyone have more info about Carolina using red in their unis?
Also, it’s not a great shot, but #12 shows Mitch Kupchak’s numbered socks in the background.
with nhl all-star wekend here, i am asking for a tad of help. i have looked eveywhere for an action photo from the 1961 nhl all-star game (black hawks vs. all-stars), mainly to see exactly what the all-stars wore. i have tried on line newspaper archives, other photo based web sites, my collection (back to 1976) of nhl all-star game progs, and nothing.
if anybody can provide a link or can steer me in the right direction, i would truly be appreciative!!
p.s. the nhluniforms.com link doesn’t count.
Maybe it was just Garnett was showing his old teammates how stretchy a jersey you can have if you come to Boston with him.
Garnett’s jersey has to make Johan giddy to get to wear something like link.

I’ll take your word on this. I don’t feel like popping my AA t-shirts right now.
Just a thought… link are made as tight as possible to prevent opposing players from grabbing the jersey.
Maybe the reason basketball jerseys are link is to allow the referees to see the foul when an opposing player grabs somebody’s shirt!

If “jersey-popping” is what i think it is, younger hockey players are starting to do it too… I’ve seen Minnesota and Michigan players score then they sort of grab the ‘m’ on the front to show it off to everyone. Peppers was an incredibly powerful presence underneath, big surprise. The ABA.
In case a few people are interested, the All-American Football League showed off many of the helmets and jerseys of its six Teams at its televised draft this afternoon. I was thrilled to discover that Team Texas will play at Rice Stadium a few miles south of me, though I think they will be disappointed by the attendance. I was disappointed by the lack of creativity in the designs. I figured they’d at least reverse the colors of the college teams they emulate, but no.
Firstly, they all have a state map on the helmet, and the state name on the front of the jersey. Teams Arkansas, Tennesse, Alabama and Michigan also have the state name on the helmet.
Texas just has the map done as a Lone Star flag. But while that white helmet has a red and blue logo, the white jersey has trim in Texas orange and A&M maroon. Virginia Tech has never made orange & maroon look very good.
Florida was more creative. An orange F on the white map on a blue helmet, reminiscent of Florida helmets from a few decades back.
I like the Michigan helmet most; it’s blue with a gold (not maize) logo, and MICHIGAN arched over the map. Strangely, the jerseys have red cuffs.
Here’s what they should have done:
1. Overall theme: the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Tight long sleeve jerseys, numbers only on the helmet, small map logos on the sleeves, lots of UCLA hoops and triple stripes.
2. Schutt has been announced the helmet supplier. We know Schutt likes to do things differently. How about a soft padded layer over the entire helmet, long suggested as a way to reduce injuries, to make it look like leather? You can easily put numbers on that.
3. Polycarbonate facemasks, much stronger than the lucite ones used briefly after WW2.
4. A different old-fashioned number font for each team. The 1960 Oilers font for Team Texas, that neat Roman font U of Tennessee used to use for player names for Tennessee, etc.
5. Arena-style rules to encourage two-way players.
This league only pays $50-100,000 per player, so they could survive on a gate of $4 million a year ($20 avg ticket X 40,000 X 5 home games). Florida looks to have a big edge in enthusiasm and personnel. Probably Tennessee and Alabama will get close to that attendance. Arkansas, who knows? Texas and Michigan (Ford Field) look shaky – there’s other things to do in those towns in the spring.
The two trends probably started independently of one another, but it’s not uncommon to see soccer players (particularly in national team games) grab, point to, pop out, kiss, etc. the shield on their jersey.
Also, it’s not a great shot, but #12 shows Mitch Kupchak’s numbered socks in the background.

Man, that brings back some memories. Note how Forte’s jersey is completely untucked in that last pic.
I can’t think of any other team that had two guys choose to play pro in a different sport, but I wouldn’t consider Curry to be a standout in the least. He’s had a few solid games, but he’s not a guy teams are afraid of.
No way on God’s Green Earth will the AAFL sell 40,000 tickets a game.
They’re paying ridiculous startup costs, ridiculous rent to the colleges, and there’s simply no way they’ll be able to generate enough revenue without television to make it work.
Now, I’m a sucker for alternative sports leagues and I came here to see if anybody else saw the helmets. I was a huge USFL fan.
But the economics of the game have changed and the startup costs of a football league are the biggest in sports. This is soooo expensive to do.
And the powers that be are blinded by the fact that while Peyton Manning would sell tickets in Tennessee, by and large, the reason the average player is revered in those college towns is BECAUSE THEY PLAY FOR THE COLLEGE. People go to see them BECAUSE THEY PLAY FOR THE COLLEGE. Playing for a pro team in the area is not going to cut it for the left tackles and right outside linebackers.
I just don’t see the AAFL making it financially.

There’s more to marketing than the team colors. And we haven’t seen everything out of all these teams.
Trust me, that’s the least of the AAFL’s problems. They’re simply planning to spend way more money than they can reasonably expect to take in. They’re going to lose a TON of money. I think this is a one and done situation.

I’m not sure you understand the dynamics of Alabama, Birmingham, etc. The state is about 60-40 Alabama fans to Auburn fans. UA is not in Birmingham, which is closer to UA but also fairly close to Auburn.
I did notice on the forums, though, that the helmets are red (UA) with a navy stripe (Auburn), and the numbers are silver (Troy) with navy outline (Auburn).
A leauge this paltry and small time should care a hell of a lot about uniforms, logos, and marketing. Many Auburn fans are saying they up front will not support this team because of the look of its logos and color schemes. Then again, I doubt many Bama fans will support it either, because it’s irrelevant.
Considering how awful an idea this league is, you would think they would give a shit what a large portion of their fans think.
It would have helped the AFL a lot to have gotten the North Carolina and West Lafayette, IN franchises going this year instead of next year, and delaying the Texas and Michigan teams instead. It’s just not going to work out in Houston, while Austin is near San Antonio and has little going on in the spring besides the Spurs. They probably would have done well in Columbus, OH, Baton Rouge, LA, and Los Angeles too.

It has prospective fans, i.e., people they want to be fans. How would they know? By understanding their target customers, which is very simple in this case. It’s not rocket science.

Exactly.
And if Auburn fans decided right away that they weren’t going to support this team anyway for whatever reason, they’re of no use to you to begin with.
There’s simply NO way to appeal to everybody. They’re hoping to do it more with players than with team colors (though some of you are trying to act as if the extent of their team marketing is the color of the jerseys).
The real problem with the league is that, while you might be mildly interested in Joe Quarterback who played for your school if he played for a quasi-pro league near you, you’re not going to be NEARLY as interested in him as you were when he WAS plying for your school because a huge part of his appeal was that HE WAS PLAYING FOR YOUR SCHOOL.
And nobody who isn’t related to the left offensive tackle from Local University is going to pay to go see Local AAFL Team Featuring left offensive tackle from Local University, no matter how much they fondly remember how he blocked for local quarterback when the team made its run to the Your Name Here Bowl.
The quarterback for the Texas team is from Nebraska (assuming Crouch can actually play). But if he can play, that’s a hell of a lot better marketing than getting Major Applewhite, who DID play at Texas but who you KNOW couldn’t play at the quasi-pro level.
I’m willing to bet that the extent of most people’s knowledge of the AAFL comes from this thread, and that no one has any idea what else they’re doing to make their product attractive state-wide or to piss off Auburn fans or Vanderbilt fans or Miami fans or Michigan State fans.
They’re just spending too much money in a sport that it’s really easy to spend money for (especially at start up). They’re not going to get the support they’re hoping for, because the pageantry and tradition of college football can’t be manufactured or transplanted from your actual school in the fall to some guys who used to play for or near your school in the spring. They’re thinking the players are the thing. In college football, especially, the players CAN’T be the thing longterm, because they’re not THERE longterm. College fans are used to having short-term attachments to their players and longterm attachments to their schools.
Running some guys in crimson jerseys out there in Birmingham five times in the spring isn’t going to generate enough interest from ‘Bama fans anyway, much less Auburn fans, even if you called them the Plainsmen or the War Eagles.
The equation is much more complex than the AAFL is making it out to be. They’re going to struggle and struggle mightily and they’ll be fortunate to make it through the first year.
I would get a jersey, though. Because I’m strange that way.
Anyone catch how Tomas Kaberle of the Leafs was wearing a pair of link during the Skills Competition? Wonder what happened to his link…

Considering how awful an idea this league is, you would think they would give a shit what a large portion of their fans think.
It’s a new league. It has no fans. How, exactly, were they to know what their ‘fans’ do or don’t think about color choices?
It has prospective fans, i.e., people they want to be fans. How would they know? By understanding their target customers, which is very simple in this case. It’s not rocket science.
YOU think it’s simple. So you tell us – what would YOU do? Give us your Marketing 101 take on this. So if they’d had crimson and burnt orange and navy blue, would that have done it? Would that overcome the Auburn fans’ disdain for something that looks like Alabama? Is it really that simple?
Seriously – lay out the marketing plan for us.

Ask and ye shall receive.
What’s simple is the initial “face” concept of how the team looks, when it comes to logos, uniforms, etc. If the appearance of the team’s logo immediately signals Bama, then that will turn off many Auburn fans right away.
Apparently, they realized this to some degree, since they included navy blue and silver in the color schemes. But the uniform is dominated by crimson. Perhaps they will don navy blue alternates as well. Or maybe the pants will be blue.
Maybe the Michigan people understood this and thus went with neutral colors.
AAFL? Hmmm. Well, I guess we could take a team for the Bay Area, seeing’s as how we don’t have any NFL teams.

When he got down on one knee, he was still taller than she is!
I watched tonight’s Iowa Energy-Ft Wayne Mad Ants D-League game on TV (yes, D-League games do make it on local TV) and a couple things stood out for tonight’s game
1. The Energy have sold the space on the back of their shooting shirts to Blue Cross-Blue Shield, giving us the eye-popping combination of orange and light blue.
2. It was 70’s night at the Arena, and the coaching staff got into the act. You should be able to find a photo of Nick Nurse in some serious polyester on the Des Moines Register website sometime tomorrow.
So, do the AAFL teams plan on having team names or just MICHIGAN, or ALABAMA? Who are you rooting for? The TENNESSEE! Silly, really.

according to wiki:
The AAFL had announced that the teams will not have official nicknames, going instead by “Team Texas”, “Team Michigan”, etc. On message boards on the league’s official website some fans have voiced their opposition to the lack of team nicknames, and have offered suggestions. As of the draft on January 26, 2008, the teams remained unnamed. The helmets and logos were unveiled on the broadcast of the draft, incorporating an outline of a state and, in some cases, a feature of the state flag (as with the Texas “Lone Star” flag and the Arkansas “diamond”).

Wow, it’s as if they are going out of their way to inhibit any sort of fan empathy…
Was watching NFL Films doc on the 1981 Super Bowl between the Raiders and Eagles.
I noticed something I never noticed before. The Raiders had a yellow rectangle sticker on the back of their helmets. I wondered if it was an equipment manager thing, like the Cowboys name stickers. I then noticed that the Eagles had it too. Threw me for a loop, until I remebered that that was the Super Bowl where large yellow ribbons decorated the outside of the stadium for the safe return of the hostages in Iran.
The yellow stickers must have been there for the hostages.
Has this been noted on this site?

Just wondering…if the Raiders gear has Reebok vectors plastered all over it, how did it get on the field in the first place?
Under Armour is the sponsor of the Senior Bowl. I’m sure they just hooked Kiffin up, since I assume he refused to anything with a Raiders logo on it.

Yes, yes, I knew that, but Under Armour must have been peeved that some Reebok Raiders swag ruined the UA-opoly.
LI Phil, you just ruined many retnae with the posting of those garish stripes in the DePaul-Marquette game! Thanks a lot!!!
The Oakland A’s have a new alternate uniform…
you can get the idea by looking at the photo on the left link
I wonder if those NBA jerseys have been redesigned in the last few years. Ron Artest’s jersey suffered a little damage after the infamous brawl in Detroit several years ago as seen link.
If KG’s jersey would distort like Artest’s did, they may stop doing it. Granted, I think Artest had his pulled on a lot harder than KG is doing.

Peppers was an incredibly powerful presence underneath, big surprise. I remember watching one game at Chapel Hill, when the entire team wore link against NC State I believe, and he grabbed a rebound directly under the rim. Jumping straight up, no step, he jammed it with more authority than Shaq or anybody I have EVER seen.
He and link were probably my two favorite college athletes for similar reasons.
It’s LaVar Arrington. Did you just spell your favorite player’s name wrong????
