Hot Pants

ss06-j854-f5_a.jpg

Big news item yesterday, in case you missed it, is that Seahawks kicker Josh Brown marked himself as a big wuss and an even bigger idiot by announcing that he’ll be wearing heated pants for Saturday’s playoff game against the Packers in Green Bay, thereby dishonoring the spirit of the Ice Bowl, the 1982 AFC Championship Game, and Bud Grant’s “No heaters on the sideline” rule (and, more importantly, depriving us of our God-given right to watch a grown man shiver in the cold while we sit in our nice cozy homes, which is what playoff football is all about).

As you might imagine, this story was like chum in the water for assorted media sharks. In Green Bay, the Press-Gazette immediately posted this photo, with the following caption: “Seahawks kicker Josh Brown, who plans to wear heated warmup pants in Saturday’s NFC playoff game at Lambeau Field, isn’t trying to stay warm in this picture. He’s being hugged by teammate Grant Wistrom after kicking a game-winning field goal against Detroit in September 2006. Of course, that game was played inside, at Ford Field.” And in Seattle, the blog Seattlest compared Josh Brown to James Brown, the latter of whom, of course, had a big hit in 1971 with “Hot Pants.”

The hunch here is that Brown isn’t the first NFL player to resort to heated pants — he’s just the first one stupid enough to admit it. I hereby predict that his ill-advised revelation will lead to the following actions:

• More cheeseheads than usual will show up at Lambeau wearing shorts.

• The aforementioned James Brown tune will be played over the Lambeau sound system at every opportunity.

• At least one tailgater will burn Brown in effigy, accompanied by a little sign that reads, “Hey, Josh, hot enough for ya?”

Incidentally, while googling “hot pants” in search of a photo to run with today’s entry, I was intrigued to come across this, which linked back to this. Who knew?! Certainly not me.

Raffle Reminder: Remember, I’m currently raffling off a $100 NFLshop.com gift card. To enter, send an e-mail to uniraffle at earthlink dot net (not to the usual Uni Watch address) by this Friday at 10 p.m. eastern. One e-mail per person, plus anyone enrolled in the Uni Watch membership program at the time of the drawing will automatically get three bonus entries. I’ll announce the winner on Monday.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Liberty started the basketball season with new uniforms (home, road) but has now taken the unusual step of making a mid-season switch — to NikeWorld, unfortunately (here’s a rear and side view). Jonathan Carone, provided all of these pics, notes that while most of the NOBs were direct-sewn, Alex McLean had a nameplate when the new design debuted on Tuesday night. “I can only assume that the original was messed up,” he writes. Also, one of the reserves was stuck wearing one of the old jerseys, although he had the new shorts. ”¦ Michael Seabaugh notes that Ohio State had a bad omen before Monday night’s BCS game had even started. ”¦ Yesterday I asked if anyone knew about Arizona State wearing gold uniforms against Arizona in 1989. ASU media relations rep Randy Policar promptly responded with this, this, and this. “We actually wore them twice,” he writes. “Once against Arizona in 1989 and once against USC in 1990. We got beaten badly both times, and they have never been worn again.” ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: A set of one of history’s greatest stirrup designs is available on eBay. ”¦ Eagle-eyed catch by Nicole Haase, who noticed a TV graphic that showed UConn with a Longhorns logo. ”¦ Newest Uni Watch reader: Rob Klingenberger‘s mascot, Katana, who apparently finds the site rather fascinating.

Okay, I’ve decided, I do not like all yellow uniforms. They hurt my eyes and do not do anything to support the masculinity of a male athlete. I put yellow below purple on my list.

Can’t help but think of Charlie Finley’s famous ‘Hot-Pants Day’, which gave free admission to an A’s game to any woman wearing said article of clothing.

Goose is going to be wearing a yankees cap in the hall, also is it just me or is he stupid for saying he would have used steroids if they were more prevalent in baseball when he played.

First Seattle scraps the NFL’s best uniforms (silver helmets and royal blue jerseys with the hawks on the sleeves) for the monstrosities that they currently wear. Then they decide to trick them out with snot green gloves and cleats. Now they have a kicker wearing heated pants? Almost makes me ashamed to be a Seahawks fan. Full shame will come if I hear “we want the ball and we’re gonna score” come out of Matt Hasslebeck’s mouth on Saturday.

    Hey Paul,
I was watching the Miami Heat- Milwakee Bucks Pregame (about the only Highlight of a Heat Telecast now a days), and noticed Maurice “Mo” Williams has a Captains C on his Right Shoulder. Once Clip I saw was from last weeks Bucks/Heat Tilt last week. On another, the C was visible in white on the Green Jersey.

    Is this news?

Nope. The Bucks have been using captaincy “C”s for several years now.

Josh Brown went to college at a cold Midwestern school that shall remain nameless, so he should be used to the cold. I am ashamed.

Yes – the ‘Hot Pants Patrol’! A few years ago when they knocked down the Vet, with all the nostalgia and whatnot, I remember them being mentioned and an interview with one of the members of the old squad.

It’s not mandatory, but some do. Those who share the parent team’s name (including the two within driving distance for me, WB-Scranton and Binghamton),of course, have no need. I just did quick research on this year’s Rochester Americans uni and they have no buffaslug on their uniform (Thank Heavens!)
I grew up watching the Binghamton Whalers and i remember, during the 4 seasons of being a joint farm team with Washington, they has a Capitals patch on one shoulder. I don’t remember exactly (and can’t track down a picture), but I think they recolored the Caps patch green to match the rest of the jersey.

Who cares what he does. Now if Lofa Tatupu did that it might be a story. Is it even going to be that cold in Green Bay? Oh, to keep this somewhat sports-related: I don’t know if the others talking about the Rochester Americans said this or not, but the Amerks’ owner screwed up the relationship with the Sabres, and starting next year, the Amerks are going to be affiliated only with the Florida Panthers (we have a few Panthers players now, but they’re mostly Sabres.)

My first team is the Amerks, but I seriously doubt I’ll be able to root for the Panthers against the Sabres, my second team. This hurts a lot. Well, maybe not as much as Chloe and Katana will hurt this afternoon…

My personal preference: I always pick the illiteration over the boring copying of the parent club.

Plus, with the change they lost the link on their jersey.

I know the original question was asked of AHL, but I’ve seen this in the ECHL too. My hometown Johnstown Chiefs used to be affiliated with Tampa Bay and they had a Lightning logo on their jersey. However, they are split this year on affilates (Colorado and Boston) and I don’t think they sport either logo.

There was an interesting uni-moment at a game I was at last month: a player for the Chiefs was wearing a jersey that had a regular number but his “nameplate” was a piece of athletic tape with his last name written on it (like an NFL training camp helmet!) I wasn’t able to follow-up on it and get the story nor was I able to get a good enough shot with my cameraphone.

If there is one place to go “off the (drawing) board,” it’s with the alternate. I liked the red a lot more as the alternate when the white and green had the same template. Now that it’s paired with the white, it looks like a mismatch. So I would change that. But I doubt it can happen, given that by law, new uniform designs cannot be changed too quickly.

The Seahawks snot green always reminds me of this link. He was one of my favorites, so maybe that’s why I like how the green pops off of the steel blue. Still, the Hawks’ old color scheme and logo didn’t need the change, IMHO.

By the way, correct me if I’m wrong, ladies, but I’m pretty sure the jean shorts accompanying the blog entry are Hollisters. The rivets of the back pockets are the clue, but it’s not as iconic as Levi’s or A&F, so I could be wrong.
(Note that in this case, a 19-year old single male, I am certainly a Uni WATCHER, not a wearer.) :-)

If you’ve ever been to Hollister, Calif., you can only chuckle at the poor souls walking around in that stuff that have no idea. The town is a complete shithole.

Congrats to Alex Ovechkin on his 13-year $124 million deal. He practically negotiated the deal by himself, too bad he doesn’t have a bigger uni number to do what Crosby did ($87 mil deal to match his #).

I’m finding that most of the “jr” squads have some kind of parent designation (either same colors or similar logo or name)
For example the new jersey farm team link is similar to the link

So far (about 1/2 way through) the only odd on is the link have the link on the yoke instead of the Rangers crest.

More digging.. have a good day
Ahem… I don’t mean to repeat myself from comment #116, but…

“The teams that are independantly operated in the AHL have the option of putting their parent clubs’ logo on the jersey. The teams that are owned by the parent NHL franchise will ALWAYS have the logo on their jerseys.

It makes sense, actually. Just because there’s an agreement between the franchises doesn’t mean that they are owned by the NHL franchise.”
“ALWAYS” seems to be a strong word.

Philadelphia(AHL) is owned by Philadelphia(NHL), and they do not have a Flyers logo.
The Lowell Devils do not have any shoulder patches. The only time the Lowell franchise had NHL patches was when they were affiliated with Carolina, and they had the gale flag/hockey stick patch on the shoulders. Even when there were dual affiliates (Carolina/Calgary then Carolina/Colorado) only the Hurricanes’ patch was used.

When the Devils’ farm club was in Albany, the uniforms had NJ Devils shoulder patches.

I know I’m younger that many of my fellow uni-watchers, but for the first time ever, I can join you in just feeling old. I can understand being a fan of a college player who’s younger than me, but when my favorite PRO player is younger than me…and by nearly a year?! Man…it’s all downhill from here, isn’t it…

Favorite pro HOCKEY player, I should point out. My favorite pro sports player also has an 8 on his jersey…and it’s followed by a 2…and he plays football (Antwaan Randle-El, if you hadn’t guessed).

The patch is an academic achievement thing that Tennessee does. Can’t remember what it’s called, but I know it’s been discussed on here before.

This should really be filed under FAQ 2.0, along with the Buccaneers’ practice font and the green dot…
That is a VOLScholars patch, awarded to a University of Tennessee at Knoxville student-athlete with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Well, I missed that discussion somehow. I generally keep up but some things slip by me. Must be my age.

That is similar to Georgia’s helmets and their merit stickers. The white bones signify great plays on the field. The black bones signify achievements in the classroom which are tallied by the academic advisors.

Are you kidding me? Will people actually buy these things?

they look surprisingly accurate, so i’d say yes, there probably is a good market for them.

although ive never been a “robe guy”, i’d accept a bulls jordan one as a gift with no reservations.
