Show and Tell

IMG_3657.JPG

It’s not often that I plaster a photo of myself onto the site’s front page (in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever done it before), but I’m feeling all kid-with-a-new-toy about my circa-1950s wool flannel Kutztown jersey, which was one of two uni-related Xmas presents I received. As most of you know, I don’t care even a little bit about owning or collecting current-era jerseys, but I get seriously geeked out about vintage specimens like this one, plus is “Kutztown” one of the greatest place names ever or what? Here’s a bigger view, and check out the awesome zig-zag stitch on the interior. Nothing on the back, alas (and no, I wasn’t taking a leak on that tree), but whaddaya gonna do?

The photos, snapped by my pal and fellow Chosen Person Claudia Gonson (drummer for the wonderful Magnetic Fields, don’tcha know), were taken yesterday afternoon just outside Brooklyn’s lovely Prospect Park. After the photo shoot, we saw Sweeney Todd (no uniforms, but some killer costume design), then had a few post-cinema beers, and then decamped to Brooklyn’s Chinatown, where Claudia was momentarily distracted by a street vendor selling bras. Then we chowed down on a ridiculous amount of Vietnamese food (true, Chinese food would’ve been more Jew-appropriate, but as Claudia pointed out, “neither of us is really that Jewish”).

My other great uni-centric present came from reader and Cardinals fan par excellence Elena Elms, who as you may recall baked me that amazing batch of stirrup-frosted cookies last holiday season. This year she sent another parcel of baked goods, with two distinct confectionary motifs: baseball-patterned shortbread and — get this — little jersey-frosted cookies!

“They didn’t turn out as I had hoped,” Elena writes. “Too small cookies, too thick icing.” But she’s clearly being too hard on herself — who else would even dare attempt to inscribe the Tigers’ logo in icing? Anyway, she continues: “I decided to go with the back of the jersey for the last two I decorated — one for the greatest player ever, and one for the greatest position player I ever saw in person, who had the best stat ever: 3630 career hits — 1815 at home, 1815 on the road.”

I’m always torn when it comes to edible art — do I eat it, or do I keep it and admire it? Fortunately, a few of the cookies broke during transit, so I was able to eat those with no guilt. I’m happy to report that they made the perfect dessert after Vietnamese food.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The Sonics and Blazers both wore road uniforms last night in Portland, supposedly to create a Christmas effect (although it seems to me that the colors were a bit off from classic Christmas hues). Interestingly, all but two of the Blazers wore red shoes — details on that are here. ”¦ Intriguing note from Bob Jonas, who writes: “Does anyone there have any photos (color preferably) of the 1983 Reds spring training experiment with white hats and helmets as depicted here and here? These are the only two shots I’ve been able to find.” I was completely unaware of this chapter in Reds history. If anyone knows more, do tell. ”¦ A few months back I wrote this entry about Earl Battey’s improvised earflap, which he wore in 1963. The first real earflap was worn by Tony Gonzalez of the Phillies the following year, but I’d never seen a photo of it until yesterday, when Morris Levin pointed me toward this eBay auction, which shows a UPI wire photo of Gonzalez wearing his new flap-inclusive lid while holding a flapless model. I’m a little surprised to see that the flap looked exactly like today’s models — guess they got that design right the first time. ”¦ Remember last year when I wrote about press pins? Here’s a good article about them (courtesy of Joe Drennan). ”¦ The Hershey Bears wore their annual Christmas-themed uniforms on Saturday (with thanks to Mark Coale). ”¦ You’ve seen plenty of Ice Bowl photos like this one. But you probably haven’t seen any that show the Packers’ band, pregame tailgating, or postgame lockerroom shots. All these, and many more are be found in this Ice Bowl gallery, put together by Jeff Ash. ”¦ Excellent article here about the old satin uniforms, along with some related issues — recommended (with thanks to Todd Radom). ”¦ Good bit on goalie masks here. ”¦ New York City subway workers are getting new uniforms (with thanks to Matthew Harris). ”¦ As you may recall from a few months back, the single-A Casper Rockies are now the Casper Ghosts and will be wearing glow-in-the-dark caps next season (details here and here). Chris Winckler got one of those caps for Christmas. “It was hard to to capture the glow,” he says, “but I’d have to say I actually like the rebranding.” ”¦ Gametime temp in San Diego on Monday night was 62 degrees — about what you’d expect. So why were the officials wearing the cold weather slacks? ”¦ Stefan Schubert reports that McPherson College in Kansas wear front-helmet uni numbers, just like the Giants and Steelers. But McPherson takes an unusual approach for players with single-digit numbers. … Excellent article here about the regulations governing high school basketball uniforms (nice find by Danny Weintraub).

Gotta love Kutztown. I have an older Kutztown pullover jacket that I found in a thrift store in Easton, PA this summer that I love for its “vintage”ness and the fact it says Kutztown.

Recognized Prospect Park right away. And kudos on the early post today, too (for those of us stuck at work).

Anyway, you might have covered this before, but do you have any more info on the link? Also, I know you talked about numbers on pants in the past, but have you ever looked into logos on pants, like the bottom of the shorts in that same photo?

That Kutztown jersey is a true classic.

While not a uni, still “athletic aesthetic”, a buddy gave me two seats from the old Mile High Stadium.

Well for my uni related gifts I got:

    link

link, which is amazingly comfortable, so I don’t blame Bill for wearing it

    no self shots however

One thing I’ve never understood about replica jerseys is why sometimes the numbering styles don’t match the authentic patterns. The Bears are a prime example. View the Devin Hester jersey from above, and link. As you can see the real sleeve numbers are short and squat, while the replica’s are taller and thinner…like they just shrunk down the back numbers in proportion.

There is no reason not to do them correctly! They are screen printed, so it’s not like it’s any more work for anyone. Drives me crazy!

hey PL, during your next stop in the lehigh valley, you can stop for a tour of kutztown university (or kutztown state when andre reed went there) and then head down 222 to the rt 100 junction and stop at the fogelsville yoccos…
i know how much you like yourself some yoccos.

I got long-sleeved t-shirts wth various StL Cardinals logos in 4 different colors, with 2 in red (red, pink, kelly green, Carolina blue)–it’s a girl thang. Plus fleece StL jackets in red and in green, so I have Christmas, Valentines Day and St Patrick’s day covered. The uni cookies look much better in your photo, Paul, and surprisingly good for the long USPS pack-mule trip they must have taken. Love the Kutztown jersey.

Interesting article on High School Basketball uni’s in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch link. Curious about the board’s thoughts.

You know, I don’t get it either. It seems so simple, still love the jersey though

Although not directly uniform related I’m guessing someone will be able to help me. My uncle and I recently invested in two sets of fenway bleacher seats. We both have plans to eventually move our seats to outdoor locations. This shouldn’t be a problem given that the seats have already withstood 30+ years outside. The problem is that each of the seats come with a MLB hologram sticker that acts as their COA. Is it better to remove the holograms and keep them in an environmentally controlled location or to weatherproof the holograms by adding some form of lacquer?

    Thanks,
    Rob

I’d say if you’re not planning on ever selling them take the stupid sticker off and do what you want with them. You know they’re real.

you must REALLY trust your neighborhood to put something like that outside… even if it is fastened to the ground somehow… word got out you had those gems outside, my guess is people would be snooping around your backyard with a tool box.

Looking good, Paul! That is an excellent jersey.

Two uni-related tidbits on SI today. First, the new uniform fiasco in the NHL made the end of the year list, being given the linkit deserves.

Second, here is a story on one player wanting another’s number, but with a twist. It’s link.

Oh, and I like the Sonics-Blazers away-away jersey situation. I think the dark green and dark red look great next to each other.

P.S. Elena, nice job on the cookies. What dedication to detail!

Hooray for The Magnetic Fields! Great, great band. Holiday and Get Lost are two of my favorite albums. I’ve got my oldest daughter listening to them. Have a whole mess of their tunes on her iPod. Legal downloads, of course…{clears throat}.

As for uni-related matters, I found this FAQ for people coming to the Fiesta Bowl, and about halfway down the page under the question ‘Who is playing in the Fiesta Bowl this year?’ it says Oklahoma will be in the home crimson, and WVU will wear the road white. No mention about which pants the ‘Eers will be sporting. Apologies if this has already been brought to the attention of the class :)

    Link

A couple of Christmas “goodies” for me… After years of wanting one, I finally got a St. Louis Blues link, thanks to my stepmother! (For some reason, it’s darn near impossible to find NHL stuff here in Arkansas…)

And the high-school basketball team I broadcast for has maroon and white as its’ colors… so my wife (an alumna, BTW) got me a pair of maroon-and-white striped dress socks to wear while I’m broadcasting the games! (Goes real well with my maroon dress shirt!)

Paul, where’s all the snow? Just north of Boston we still have over 2 feet on the ground! You’re not that far away.

    Bah!

Nice jersey though. Looks very comfortable.

I actually own two of those press pins – for covering Super Bowls 23 and 25. The 23 one is nice but the 25 one is underwhelming from the standpoint of it being the 25th game. It’s too small and flimsy, where the #23 one is hefty and nice.

I’m starting to think that the NFL officials actually are enjoying the pants. Maybe they like the look better than the knickers (even though it’s more traditional)and there more comfortable.

Oh, forgot – I have four Indy 500 (1992-95) pins as well from covering the race. Those are substantial, they’re nice.

    I got a 1976 Pats throwback jersey.

What’s bugging me about it is that I’m not entirely sure the Pats wore NOB in ’76 (I wasn’t around for another 11 years). Anyone know?

This is not related to anything today, but it is a nice Q&A with the Bengals Equipment Manager today.

Not much, mostly about laundry, which fits with the recent discussion of “rooting for the laundry”

    link
Cheers and Merry Merry and all that,
    Stevie

Sorry, my mistake, assistant Equipment Manager not Rob Recker who was featured on here a few weeks ago.

Say what you will, but I really like the new Casper Ghosts stuff.

I’m pretty sure the NFL has had NOB since ’70 by rule. Wasn’t this one of the things brought on by the merger?

Ack! A dude just walked into my office wearing one of those urine-colored Minnesota Golden Gophers jerseys. I thought I would be spared from seeing one of those eyesores up close considering I’m about 800 miles from Minneapolis.

My two cents on the MTA uniforms… I liked the old ones but that might be my 21 year old grandpops trying to get out… the cardigan and tie pretty hip. The new look with the monotone tie and shirt and then you get the storm trooperesque tie button to told it down now the MTA really is a state sponsored terrorist organization.

    Football Outsiders need Uniwatch Input

    From Audibles at the Line

Tim Gerheim: Troy Smith just threw a pass to Musa Smith, which fell incomplete. I don’t mention that to point out how undermanned and/or undertalented the Ravens offense is, but because both of them have “Smith” on the back of their jerseys, not ” T. Smith” and “M. Smith.” Weird.

Aaron Schatz: The NFL changed the rules last year, and teammates who have the same last name no longer have to have first initials. That’s why the Pats’ No. 12 jersey doesn’t say “T. Brady” now.

Michael David Smith: But there’s a grandfather clause, so players who already had an initial on their jersey are allowed to keep it, if they want.

Aaron Schatz: Actually, I think the rule isn’t that you can’t do it, just that you don’t have to. I think teams and players get to choose now.

No, that would have been fine. It’s one of the ugly gold FOOTBALL jerseys.

Yes, all NFL jerseys have had NOB since the merger in 1970. Prior to that, the AFL did it in the 1960s and the merged league adopted it.

I don’t know if the AFL did it starting in 1960 or after. They might have been the first ones to ever do it. If that hasn’t been a Uniwatch investigation yet, it should be. :)

I’d be interested to learn about those Reds white hats in the early 80’s. As I lived in CIncinnati at that time, was a die-hard Reds fan, and would not have missed something like that (but obviously I did) -I’d like to know how that came about. This is the team that required the shoes to be all black, no white trim showing. Like that would fly now!

I don’t know if anyone outside of Canada cares about this tournament, but I’m watching the World Juniors right now, and in the highlights it appeared that the Swedish team has an ad on their sleeves, I’m trying to find a pic.

I don’t know how I forgot that the World Junior Hockey tournament is always like this, but the ads are once again apparent. The referees have ads instead of numbers on their chests and backs, and the rink has more ads than Time Square. All of that is par for the course in Europe and the NHL is no stranger to rink ads. However, why would you want Skoda all over your nation’s jerseys, Czech Republic. Shouldn’t something be sacred? How would Americans feel if USA hockey had Ford emblazoned on their players shoulders and helmets. It’s great that Skoda supports hockey in Europe but isn’t the giant logo at centre ice enough? Or how about the car parked in the tunnel? The logo creep on all the teams is link enough. I know there have been ample examples of the extremes of Euro hockey on this site before, it’s just disappointing that it has taken over an under-20 international tournament as well. It’s your country for crying out loud! And these aren’t independent rep teams, these squads are sponsored by the National hockey agencies of their respective nations. And for those of you who aren’t Canadian and have no idea what I’m going on about, since 1985 the World Junior Hockey Championships has become a very important holiday tradition in Canada, we all know we take hockey too seriously.

Good catch! Apparently they had them in spring training, too (note the link).

Come to think of it, it probably WAS a Bill Veeck thing.

In fact, link that, yes, it was:

Jersey names were the brainchild of White Sox owner Bill Veeck, who added monikers to the team’s uniforms in 1960. Scorecard vendors protested, but they needn’t have worried — the names were only a blur from the grandstand. But they were sharp and clear on TV, which was the whole point.

I almost bought a NY Knights jersey while visiting Camden Yards last month. It was way on sale (like $79 or something), but it was the gray and I’d prefer the white. Those are sweet.

By the way, my uni-related gift this Christmas was a home Blackhawks jersey with double zero (00) and “Griswold” on the back. I think the most disturbing thing is how they put a logo on everything. One of Paul’s arguments is that he doesn’t mind a logo on a piece of interchangeable equipment because the player decides on what type/brand of pads/gloves/helmets they want to use. In the above pic, there are very large and grotesque logos on the goalie’s blocker and the players helmets (which look different for the two teams.) This means that either the league (controlled by the advertisers) gave the teams/goalie helmets and pads to wear w/ the logos already on, or they had their own teams of people go into the players equipment rooms and smack those damn logos on. Either way it sucks. I guess having the huge logos on the ice and the side boards isn’t enough. I’m surprised there are no mandatory logos on the players sticks or skates. Not big enough billboard space i guess. By the way, I am a marketing professional.

One last rant 9and I know I am a few days late for this conversation, but as a marketing professional I can tell you that these types of advertising methods rarely work to build sales or generate great amounts of income. Any customers/clients this type of marketing/advertising are not the ones you want anyway because they don’t tend to be loyal, so it may get you some money upfront, but it doesn’t payoff in the long haul. All this type of stuff does is generate brand recognition, so people will say when they see a logo is, “hey, that logo is for XYZ company, and they do ABC type stuff.” But it doesn’t get people to say, “I am going to go with XYZ company because I saw their logo on the ass of a hockey team I like, so they must be good.” Ok, that was my rant for the week, thanks for listening.

He means manufacturer’s logos, not corporate logos. And RBK logo on an RBK stick is fine. A citigroup logo is not.

After Canada had finished off the Czechs I turned on the Spengler cup and came on to comment on the hideousness of it. Since Canada is the only national team entered, with the rest being European club teams, there must be a stipulation in the tournament rules that all the teams will turn themselves into billboards. The best feature is that the link name is pushed below the number and is smaller than the two ads on the top and bottom of the jersey (I’d call it a sweater but that rag is an insult to the traditions of hockey).
logos on hockey uniforms… lots of complaining…
People, I have gone into great detail before as to why there are always advertising during European-based tournaments.

The local teams and organizers sell the advertising spots to raise money for thier local club teams, arenas, and hockey programs. It is not up to the teams, but the tournament organizers as to where advertising is displayed.

None of the club teams in Europe are financed by multi-billionaires like they are in North America. The only exception is the Russian Super League, but even they have some teams that barely break even. In order for the teams in Pardubice and Liberec to make some huge money, the tournament organizers sell as much advertising as they can anywhere it can be placed. The tournament organizers get a portion of the profits that the IIHF makes, and they normally re-invest it back into their hockey communities.

If the IIHF makes a ton of money, the organizer’s piece of the pie gets that much bigger. What’s the easiest way to make a ton of money? Sell advertising opportunities everywhere, including on players.

I hope that explains the European phenomenon. :o)

    Hey everybody.

I’ve been a long time reader of uniwatch, great site!

I’m posting for a personal favor. I’m doing a paper on sterotypes in sports logos/mascots/uniforms. I know there are countless Native American Indian examples most notably Cheif Wa-hoo for Cleavland. I was wondering if anybody knew any good examples I could use. It could be major pro sports, small minor leauge, big time college, local high schools, any sport, any sterotype. Thanks for your help.

As my dad and I have discussed since I started my own practice – would you want to advertise where 20 other companies have, therefore joining the clutter, or would you want to advertise where few are, therefore having your ad be seen by that audience?

Thanks for the explanation. Though I would like to point out that my issue isn’t so much that the Euro leagues do it, but the national teams. At the World Juniors the USA and Canada do not have ads on their players, except for logo creep of course. I realize that the European nations don’t have as much money for junior hockey as the North American ones do, but since many of their players are in the CHL anyway they aren’t spending that much on training and development in their own countries (for example young Czech players are either in the CHL or the Czech Elite League). Certainly they could afford to attend the tournament, in the Czech Republic no less, without selling ads to Skoda. The club teams are independent business enterprises that certainly are free to do whatever it takes to keep afloat, but a national team? Seems a bit extreme to me. I suppose it can be justified as raising money that can be devoted back into national programs, but their must be a way to do it without selling ad space like a rep team.

google “link” and you’ll hit the motherlode…or at least, it’s a good place to start

It doesn’t matter if it is a national team or not. The Canadian team in the Spengler Cup is plastered with ads as well. Why? Because the tournament organizers are in charge of advertising in the tournament.

As for the companies buying the ad space, it is their choice to buy into a spot with 20 ads on it or not. And since any television advertising reaches millions, it is better than not buying at all.
