What’s been the biggest change in pro football over the past 30 years? A lot of things come to mind: modern training methods, the increased size of linemen, the overall increase in athleticism and speed, the advent of video review, the increasing dominance of African-American players, the disappearance of jersey sleeves, the utter joylessness of head coaches.
But if you ask me, the biggest development — and easily the most underrated one — is the ubiquity of gloves. Almost everyone wears them now, even quarterbacks, and it’s no exaggeration to say that most of the acrobatic catches you see receivers making these days wouldn’t be possible without them. Yeah, some players in the pre-glove era wore stickum, but I saw Lester Hayes and Fred Biletnikoff in their primes, and they couldn’t make any of these one-handed catches that you routinely see guys making today. Gloves have completely redefined the passing game.
All of which came to mind during yesterday’s Cowboys/Eagles game, which featured something I’d never seen before: Philly WR Kevin Curtis took a spill along the sideline, and at first it looked like his glove had come off during the play. But as he got up, it became apparent that the glove had actually fallen apart — the upper part was still on his wrist while the lower part had been ripped right off of his hand, much to Curtis’s own confusion.
In other developments from yesterday:
• Jason Taylor’s captaincy patch was coming loose by the end of the Dolphins/Ravens game.
• As has been noted here several times in recent weeks, the “Ravens” wordmark has been missing from Willis McGahee’s black jersey in recent weeks, but it was present and accounted for on his purple jersey yesterday.
• The Redskins usually wear these socks with their burgundy pants, but they went with these — ugh.
• Now that‘s a football game. But if Derek Anderson was playing with a sewn-in pocket, why did he need an oven mitt?
(Big thanks to Chad Todd and Randy Williams from the Kevin Curtis screen grabs.)
Research Project: My ESPN colleague Mary Buckheit is working on a piece about women’s volleyball uniforms — why they’re so skimpy, why some players have issues with them, why they’re so different from the men’s uniforms, whether they’re so revealing that they’ve actually led some players to develop eating disorders, that sort of thing. Here’s a note from her:
The sport of volleyball has seen it all — unitards, mesh shorts, bun huggers, long sleeves, racerback jerseys, tall socks, no socks — what’s the deal? What is the functionality of volleyball uniforms, specifically the super-short spandex? Are women really inhibited by “cumbersome” traditional athletic shorts? You know, the ones that are perfectly suitable for soccer and basketball. Do the minis really make you perform better? Would men’s statistics spike if they dared ditch their mesh or board shorts in favor of a biker boxer brief type uni? Would they tally more digs that way? C’mon.
When you see volleyball on TV, do you stop and watch for an extra second to scope out the 6-foot college coeds in 3-inch spandex shorts? If so, any feelings on what it would be like as a father of a high school volleyball player knowing guys in the gym are doing the same thing to your 16-year-old sophomore setter?
If anyone has any thoughts on this, please feel free to contact me. Thanks!
I know at least a few of you know a lot more about volleyball than I do, so please share your knowledge with Mary. Thanks.

I was watching the Eagles-Cowboys game when the Curtis glove incident happened. When I figured out that his glove had come apart on the play, I turned to my wife and said “That’s a Uni-Watch moment”.
In the play, though Curtis went up for the ball couldn’t come down with it, fell to the turn and had his hand inadvertently stepped on as he slid across the turf, thus destroying his glove (and sending the remnant flying through the air). I think the ‘confused’ picture is Curtis checking out his hand for health reasons, as opposed to “What the hell happened to my glove?”
Keith Davis (#29) of the dallas cowboys was wearing an interestinf face mask last night. Anyone else see it?
Anyone see Todd Yoder of the Redskins get his jersey shredded after his catch last night? Unfortunately I couldn’t get a picture of it.
Old fart rambling: back in the 60s, most of the players in the Ice Bowl (Packers-Cowboys 67 NFL championship, 13 below, yada yada) didn’t wear gloves. Jerry Kramer wrote that only the linemen did, “because we’re the only ones who don’t have to handle the ball during a game.” He actually didn’t decide to wear them until his first trip out onto the field – and immediately heard Forrest Gregg say “hell, let’s get another pair.”

The all-purple combination is quite possible the worst thing to happen to the NFL. All in all, the Vikings are missing the bus on their uniforms in general.

That is the Schutt Bulldog face mask that debuted last year. It was originally designed to fit the DNA helmet but were modified to fit the AIr Advantage by Schutt as well as the Stock Riddell helmet(not the Revolution). Lorenzo Neal wears the version fit for Riddell and his partner in the backfield wears a modified version of it for the Schutt A.A. The first person to sport this was LeVar Arrington of the Giants last year and he looked CRAZY scary with it.

With all the recent discussions of FNOB, I couldn’t help but notice that in yesterday’s game, the Jaguars dispensed with initials when it came to:
Greg Jones
Matt Jones
Maurice Jones-Drew
None of them have initials or other names on their nameplate, even though all 3 of them are often on the field together (Greg is FB, Matt WR, and Maurice RB). Makes sense to me; they all have different numbers to tell them apart.
Can’t find photos from that Steeler game, but here is photographic proof that they did use initials in the past:

De La Salle HS vs Corona Centennial Saturday night CA state high school championship. Both teams are in the top 25 in the country. De La Salle has a different decal for each side of the helmet. The forward facing Spartan head is a mirror image, but underneath it spells out De La Salle, meaning that the decals have to be completely different (like the Chiefs, Ravens, Northern Illinois, etc). Centennial had helmets with red paint around the edges and black on top, the reverse of the helmets San Diego State was wearing a couple of years ago.
The question is: Did the Babe have his jersey on underneath!
If not, then Yankee Bob can’t only pick on Terry Francona because a Yankee had set the precedent!

There was one famous monochrome, necessitated because they wanted to wear their standard road uniform of white jerseys and purple pants at home but forgot to tell the visiting Lions, who didn’t bring their home blues. So the Vikes were forced to wear their home jerseys, resulting in a purple nightmare.
Shows how times have changed – back then, the Vikings were embarrassed by the look. Now they’ll willingly choose it?

Well, the first one is to cater to Ameriholics – those who just can’t get enough of the Stars & Stripes.
The second is a sad holdover of the 70s: stoned people heard the term “Golden Gate”, juxtaposed it with Watergate and thought that if they could only coin a new “-gate”, they’d get rich. As the numbers of the acid-addled dwindle, so will this neoplastic neologism.
Of course “-oholic” comes from the Prohibitionists who lay in wait for their next chance – after they’ve pried my liquor from my dead hands – who try at every turn to denigrate spiritous beverages.

on a side note: i HATE, HATE, HATE, the cleveland browns (pittsburgher)… but those sideline coats are pretty cool (seriously). when they’re not playing football, they can go pick up the trash on the side of the freeway (you know, like their playbook, teammates, anything else that says cleveland, etc.)… lol. besides, i’m sure a lot of the browns (or their boyfriends (winslow)) have the matching jump-suits from various nights spent in jail, and what a better what to match?!?!
ha-ha… ok, ok, i won’t trash talk! besides, if the ol’ black-n-gold don’t watch out, the brownies will be taking their place in the playoffs!
Mind you, who’s the Steelers’ mascot these days? Steely McBeam
…ouch!

I was in the POOL!
I was watching a U. of Minnesota basketball game on TV recently and am so glad they haven’t tried to update Goldy Gopher to make him more fierce looking. Remember some small kids love these guys, and they become big kids and big fans…
When this “new” Goldy was introduced (1985) he actually was more aggressive looking. His eyebrows were furrowed and he had more of a scowl. See here link The U received feedback that he was too mean for kids so they softened him up a bit. More of a grinning fool look I would say. Much preferred the scowl but then again how angry can a gopher really be? Wait. Caddyshack anyone?
The Gopher mascot of the 60s and 70s (same link) is what I grew up with and he was depicted in every activity imaginable. The 1979 version shown on the same link is one I have never seen -and I was attending the U then – so I suspect it never was used (especially if they introduced the new version 6 years later).
Vikes in all purple – as much as I dislike the new look I agree on the new pants being the worst part. Somehow the all purple doesn’t look all bad though. I will be there tonight and will file an in-person report on whether they look better in person. If they even go through with it that is…

In 1986 when they “softened” goldy, wouldn’t it have been sufficient to just make him not scowl? Did they really have to remove his toe-claws and muscles? That just seems cruel!

I think I like the exact opposite, and by like, I mean I don’t mind. I hate the dark monochrome look on anyone but maybe the Jets. But with certain teams, color etc, the all white look is ok. Those of us who are old enough (40+) remember when the only correct way to abbreviate New York was “N.Y.” California was “Calif.” back then. (And “Tex.”, “Ark.”, “Fla.”, “Miss.”, etc.)
