This one’s going to hurt at Adidas headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, for a long while. Friday night in the NCAA women’s soccer Final Four, both UCLA and Notre Dame were eliminated. Both Adidas schools with identical uniform templates, both losses at the hands of agents swaddled in the Swoosh of the Beaverton, Ore.-based infidel (USC and Florida State). Dark times indeed, friends.
Also notable from these two matches in College Station, Texas, are the photos that moved on the AP wire. There are, apparently, only two types of soccer photos: The ones above, where two players converge upon the ball, and ones like this or this.
So, if I may, let me boil down the NCAA women’s soccer tournament for you: Two girls run into each other while chasing the ball (these situations may also include making funny faces and clutching at jerseys). After that, other girls celebrate by waving their arms in the air.
There, I just saved you a few hours on Sunday. You’re welcome. — Bryan
Bonus coverage: Is this guy (Mexico’s Miguel Calero) wearing a grown-up soccer onesie? And why is the chest logo taped out?

I believe that the mexico GK has his logo taped out because it’s his own kit rather than team kit and will be a rival supplier.
its quite common in rugby that players wear a scrum cap (hat) which doesn’t fit with the team manufacturers wishes and so he has to tape over the name (much the same as Schutt helmets not having the name on the front in the NFL).
Did Peter Cech have to tape over his CCC scrum cap?

link apparently; his cap wasn’t a traditional scrum cap, though. Chelsea got Canterbury to design it for him, since it’s protecting an existing injury. At least, that’s what I remember from reading about it.

i play ncaa women’s soccer, but i’m not going to even waste my time with the bashers I honestly don’t expect most american men to appreciate soccer and I would never ask them too. anyway, I’m pretty sure if that Miguel guy plays NCAA soccer, he probably had to tape the logo on his shirt while in practice because either
1-it is not his team’s sponsor or
2-the logo it too big and violates the ncaa rules
From my experience, when you reach the Final Four in NCAA and sometimes even before that there are NCAA reps there for each team making sure they are following all the NCAA rules while they are participating in the tournament. For example, my team is sponsored by adidas and when we practiced before our Final Four games we had to turn our practice shirts backwards because the adidas logo was too big.
Speaking of Women’s NCAA Soccer….congrats to Central Michigan’s womens soccer team for having the nation’s highest team GPA for the 3rd year in a row.

Two goodies from last night’s Celtics game (LOVE THE THROWBACKS!!!!)
Rajon Rondo’s been wearing his headband upside down all season. It was easier to spot last night, because his headband had a link instead of the NBA logo.
Brian Scalabrine was rocking somewhat short shorts. I have a picture but I’m having trouble uploading it right now. Tommy Heinsohn was doling out the jokes about them all night long.
It seems that the Reds have released their tribute patch to Joe Nuxhall (former broadcaster and player who passed away last month).
This link is the best, there are more, but the link monster may eat the post.
Simple, which I like, Nuxy in white letters on a black circle.

if anyone cares, the deuce is replaying the sc/ucla match right now
As said before, this soccer goalie probably uses a different brand of kit than the team sponsor supplies.
Some goalkeepers will wear overalls in practice. With the way they dive and slide over the turf a shirt will easily pull out of their pants. Sand and dirt would then end up in their underwear, causing scratches.
To my knowledge not every manufacturer makes/provides these overalls, which may explain the need to wear his own. During matches, he’ll probably wear standard team-issued gear.

You can probably blame the photographers that are feeding the shots to the AP. Every shutterbug has their favorite style of shot to frame for a particular sport, this one just happens to be partial to both the “Grab and Tackle” action shot and the “Thrill of Victory, Agony of Defeat” reaction. My personal soccer shot would probably be trying to catch player and ball frozen at the moment of impact, but my fav overall sports angle is the Volleyball “Here Comes the Hammer” net shot, with the pre-game team huddle a close second.

When did the colonel sign with Adidas?
I vaguely remember a discussion of the three stripes on his apron. I wonder if it’s a coincidence with Adidas’ sponsorship of the NBA.
It was mentioned yesterday that last night’s Pistons-Bulls matchup had Detroit in throwback unis and Adidas headbands. But the funniest thing was a few minutes into the game, during a stoppage of play, when the camera pans over to Rip Hamilton NOT WEARING ANY PANTS! There’s Rip, with his skinny legs sticking out the bottom of his baggy jersey! Apparently he needed to change his shorts or something, so he did it right there on the court.
The Colonel sporting Adidas, as seen from link.

Soccer has NO chance to ever be culturally relevant in the US.
From the standpoint of youth involvement, I would say soccer is already pretty relevant in the US.
It is relevant. Thousands of kids play soccer every year. There are multiple pro soccer leagues in the US.
What it isn’t is the NFL or MLB. It is not the most popular professional sport. I hate how europeans say we dont appreciate soccer and need to be like “the rest of the world” and support pro soccer. Well the rest of the world doesn’t have the best pro sports leagues in EVERY other sport. England has what, one of the best soccer leagues in the world.
US has the best hockey, basketball, baseball, football possibly laX. Not to mention the college athletics which draw millions of fans per year. Citizens only have so many dollars to spend on entertainment. And the US citizen already pays WAY more for sporting events then any other country in the world.

And at least one of the sleeves looks to have 18 on it, instead of the back which has 17.

Here is a link to how I think the uniforms SHOULD look.

Great work!! This is SO COMMON SENSE that it infuriates me that the idiots who designs some of these uniforms can’t see this!!!

Jet,
Thanks for the comment. The more I look at the difference between link and link, the more irritated it makes me.
Is it that MLB and most sports franchises are too cheap to hire someone with a little bit of design sense?
Fellow posters, I think you accidentally mixed up the lead post with some of the opinions posted on the board. After the lead post, many people resorted to the old and predictable line about women’s sports/soccer being just this side of irrelevant in this country. To them, I echo Paul in saying, just go somewhere else, and don’t bother us with your obnoxious remarks.

I am not a fan of the black alts. To me, red is too dark a color to be used against black, and the colors end up getting blurred together too much. The link have a similar problem. I think the regular Bulls red away jerseys are much cleaner and nicer. Anyway, the real uni-story last night were the Piston’s throwbacks. I liked them a lot, especially the retro-looking city and team name above and below the front numbers. The thin lines of color also looked sharp, IMO.
I’m not crazy about the red pinstripes on black because to me, they blend together and start looking kind of…brown.
I do agree that the ultra-shiny fabric has go to go.
BTW, the Pistons looked nice.
Is anyone salavating the DePaul-Marquette matchup in the Big East this season?
We should dub thee “That ’70s Game.”

I think that was just a promotional type jersey. It has all three numbers the brothers wore in the movie which leads to the different numbers and the name is added. But you’re right, no names were used in the film.
January 26th for that game, that’s the good news and it’s in Milwaukee.
The bad news it’s on ESPNU.

I’ve long been a fan of the powder blues and was rooting for their return. In hindsight, though, some thoughts:
I thought the powder blue alts with white pants would be awful. They’re not good, but not as bad as I feared.
I like the white with the royal outline better than the royal with white outline. But I like the solid blue better.
That said, with the baggy look in vogue now, I think an all powder blue look would look just sad. A tighter fit and royal stirrups are needed to complete the look.
If they can’t get it right, don’t. It’ll screw up the good memories I have.

link
anyone know the kicks woodson is wearing here in his si heisman pic?
link
they look a lot like a black, cleated version of the air total max 2 seen here

however, if im correct the total max 2 didnt get released until ’01.

Basketball jerseys can’t pull off the pinstriped look. It sucked with the Bulls, it sucked with the Pacers, it simply royally sucks. Looks awesome in baseball (especially the Yankees), looks nice on Wall Street, but for G-d’s sake, NOT on a tank top and shorts.

youre forgetting the charter member of the pinstiped uni club (well, thats how they spun it when it came out anyway), the charlotte hornets.

Followed shortly thereafter by the link.
The New England Patriots evidently have a link (check out especially the fifth photo in this gallery).
Really, you say? Actually, it’s the link, an NAIA school in Kentucky. Interestingly, maroon appears to be primary color for most of their teams, except for the wrestlers, who go with blue. Plus, there’s no maroon in the Patriot logo.
There was a slight error in my first link above in comment 117. The link takes you to a gateway page, then select the wrestling gallery and check out the fifth photo. Some of the other photos show what I’m talking about, but not as well as No. 5.
(As an aside, I always have trouble when I try to link to photo galleries showed in Flash. Anyone have any suggestions to make it easier?)

We’ll discuss the lameness of the men’s game when they start winning World Cups.

thats funny because a mens soccer team does win the mens world cup… every time…
This may have been said already, but he is the goalie from Panchua. It is not a onesie, but just goalie warm ups. the logo looks like the kelme logo, which is which it must be taped out (playing for a puma team). sorry i have no links, but going to

Does anyone know where you can get a new Depaul basketball uniform? They look so cool, yet I can’t seem to find them anywhere.
