Lost in Translation

bimbo

In every language, there are some words that don’t quite make the leap over the cultural divide. Bimbo would be one of those. In Mexico, Bimbo is the name of a giant food conglomerate that ranks No. 4 globally, behind Unilever, Sara Lee, and Nestlé; in America, bimbo tends toward, well, this.

So as we move into December, and therefore into the “real” holiday season (none of this Christmas stuff hung in October crap), let’s remember the differences that make cultures unique — and that sometimes it’s OK to wear a shirt that says “Bimbo” on it. Just probably not here. — Bryan

Whenever I see the Bimbo bread trucks here parked outside tiendas, I always think they could make a fortune selling t-shirts with their white bear and ‘BIMBO’ logo.

Even worse, in German “Bimbo” is just another word for Nigger. Fortunately words like that are not really popular anymore.

Bimbo is also the title of a song recorded by Gene Autry in the 1950s. No negative connotations here at all … it’s a “nonsense [novelty] song” about a boy named Bimbo, suitable for family listening.

A reason to celebrate Nike getting out of hockey:

Ohio State’s ice hockey team wore the nike swift cookie cutter jersey last night. Complete with awkward soccer fit, vertical stripes, shoulder numbers, and that bland standardized nameplate/number font that every single team wore in the last olympics. Though most photos are centered upon U-M players you can see some good photos of the tOSU players if you click “photo gallery” [link]
It helps me stomach the RBK edge better.
By the way, The Yost student section serenaded their innovatative look to an “Ugly jerseys!” chant. Which to me is evidence that Joe hockey fan (not just us unicentrics) can look at the sweater and know something isn’t right.

This seems to have never panned out, but Bimbo was considering sponsoring Chivas USA of the MLS. link about MLS advertising from a year back.

    According to Wikipedia:
According to the Big 12 Conference’s website, the use of the alternate names “Big Twelve” and “Big XII” are incorrect; the trademarked name of the conference is “Big 12 Conference” (notwithstanding the Roman numeral XII featured on the conference logo)

Unfortunately, though the BU circa 1958 jersey is nice (I personally own one), the team stunk out the joint last night. Maybe we’ll have better luck tonight (I hope!)

Regarding the name “Bimbo”… there was also link male cartoon dog from the Fleischer studios from 1930 through 1933, according to Wikipedia. (He’s next to Betty Boop in the picture.)

Poor ol’ Bimbo was axed (and Betty was “cleaned up” considerably) by the Production Code censorship laws… couldn’t have a human with a dog for a boyfriend, could we now?

Back in the uni-centric world, this alum hopes link wears their link tonight… GO MIZZOU! ;-)

Wow, another bengals quirk I’ve never noticed before. Not only do their shirts not match, link. Check out the two guys facing left (52 and 94), both have their left legs showing, but their tiger stripes go different direcctions. 52’s go UP to the back, 94’s go DOWN to the back. Also, check out Smith and the guy right in front of him (obscured by 52). Their right legs are visable. Smith’s stripes go up to the front; the other guy’s (and #28 for that matter) go up to the back.
link Ocho Cinco’s pants match the lineman, but not Palmer’s. Wonder what the reason is.

i can’t stand Mizzou’s faded yellow pants. they’re one of the few teams that i think look good in all-black. (jax jags being the other) i have no idea who’s even considered the home team tonight.

has MU worn the white jersey/black pants combo? if so, i’ve completely spaced on it.

i preferred the corby jones era uniforms.

As for the Bimbo biz, did you know they own Wonder Bread and Entlemann’s?

So maybe Chivas USA coulda gotten Wonder Bread or Entlemann’s on their shirts instead of the current sponsors.

The Bengals need to give up all stripes except for their helmets. It is just too damn hard to keep th stripes straight. The Chargers can’t keep their bolts running in the same direction either for that matter.

Let’s all put a petition together for the Redskins to wear multi-striped socks in honor of 21 Sean Taylor.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals new AA affiliate) released their new uniform designs on Friday night. Has Anyone seen them? I found an link about the unveiling but no pics.

I don’t know if Chibb has ever sponsored a team, but the company known as link did.

Additionally, Arsenal used to be sponsored by the makers of links – which wasn’t a big deal until they travelled to Italy for matches. Apparently, “sega” is a slang term for masturbator in Italian.

There are also stories of AC Milan being sponsored by Pooh jeans, but I can’t find evidence.

I completely agree. The old gold Mizzou pants look horrible with either black or white jerseys. White jersey, black pants is their best combo.

The #1 reason why Nike is getting out of hockey is the same reason they got into it in the first place – Roller blade technology. They thought that roller blades were the wave of the future and bought hockey to acquire skate boot technology. When rollerblades fizzled, there really wasn’t a need to keep a hold of a niche market sports entity. They can still subcontract uniforms and have a swoosh placed on them later. Never has been a problem, can’t see why it would be now.

Keep your perspective in check. This website is all about athletic AESTHETICS, not simply athletics. Notice how Mr. Lukas was thankful for stirrups on the Mets due to the acquisition of Johnny Estrada. Nowhere did he say anything to the effect of “Too bad Estrada sucks.”

The old stuff circa 1997, back in the Sergei Ferdorov Hey-Day was total junk, but the new concepts and looks are great. As for the swift style jerseys, I’m not so sure. The problem as I see it is that Georgetown has always been proud of gray as one of its primary colors. It’s (relatively) rare to have gray as one of the two primary colors–especially compared to the blue that makes up the Hoyas’ road unis. Georgetown has associated with blue and gray since the 1870s, and the uniqueness of the gray home uniforms is what makes fans resistant to change. And yes, when the team was playing its worst basketball in the past 25 years, it was wearing white and light blue uniforms.

Agreed. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the Beavers are worse than the Ducks. Yes, the Ducks colors are garish beyond description, but this combo has decent balance. That Beaver wrap-around name plate under arm thing raises the bar (or lowers) on the “Good or stupid” scale. They look like they’re wearing those canoe life vests we had at camp. WTF.

EVERY BASKETBALL TEAM should have to wear white if they are the home team. Colors as visitors. I know they made that rule for high schools in North Dakota.

Tennessee in orange pants? Too much orange for me. But in comparison to Oregon they are beautiful!

Perhaps, my dogged determination to bring to light and humiliate the tigers of Mamaroneck stems from the still felt stinging of losses to them my sophomore and junior years of high school, which not coincidentally were 13 and 14 years ago but perhaps because we were in the same league and my uniforms looked akin tho these:

    link

    link

Catching up with yesterday’s Bengals thread…They should remove all tiger striping save for the socks. That would look great, IMO. Also, the helmet should change to all black with the leaping tiger they have on the shoulder.

Non-uni related…why is it necessary for football coaches to have police escorts after the game is over? Jogging off the field with 6 state troopers around you…dude, you’re just a football coach!

    /rant off

did anyone else have an inkling like i did that tennessee would come out all orange?

OU in white-on-white. Classic college football. Why have Fairbanks, Switzer, and Stoops NOT seen fit to mess with Bud’s perfection? Why do the best college football uniforms hardly ever change? Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, UCLA…you can’t beat traditional.

If Mizzou were worried about “Uni mojo” they would’ve stayed with the gold pants.

Jersey number things: South Panola High School (Batesville, MS), which has the country’s longest active football winning streak (74 games), has jersey number that look like they have been “clawed” (their mascot is the tigers)

Also, went to a minor league hockey game last night between the Knoxville Ice Bears and the Columbus (GA) Cottonmouths. Bears uniforms nothing worth mentioning (solid black, despite their colors being purple and orange), but the Cottonmouths’ jersey numbers were “made” out of snakes that had been drawn so that they looked like numbers. With WV, I meant Gold over Navy would be much better looking than Gold over Gold. I dont much like WV’s uni’s at all.
And I never said I didnt like OU’s uni’s, I love the classic look, but I said the uniforms contrasts each other. Its not only classic vs modern, but its white over white vs black over black which makes each team stand out more.
Back in HS, our colors were blue and red, we wore blue over blue at home and either white over red or white over blue on the road. So, yes, I like the monochromatic look with some colors, but usually the helmet color matters too.
Speaking of HS, we were the Buckskins which we usually shortened to Bucks. As for what a Buckskin is, its like a Pioneer or Mountaineer or at least thats what our mascot costume was. Our logo was just the initials of the school (Conestoga Valley) heres a link

Goodness, as soon as I was happy to have missed the Oregon retina-exploder, I turn on the WV-Pitt game to see all electric-yellow… I think that beats Minnesota’s all-yellow combo from earlier this year

I’m thinking that because of the fact that UT is 0-4 (now 0-5) since 1999 in the Georgia Dome and because they almost lost to Memphis (they won 19-17 I think) the last time they wore the orange pants, perhaps they thought two wrongs make a right. Obviously they were wrong. I think the orange pants would have been better, though, if they had some sort of stripe down the side like the white pants do. Instead they looked like Cheetos.

I like the idea of the torch patch, but it is not well-executed. It would be better if they didn’t put it on the white background and sew it on there, but I guess it is necessary to make it contrast with the jersey. For those who don’t know, the torch symbolizes the Volunteer maxim: “One that beareth a torch standeth in shadow to give light to others.”

At least they didn’t look like they were wearing giant tennis balls on their heads like Oregon.
