If It’s OK to Call Football Pretty …

Football

I think this would qualify. Not only is it a classic matchup, it’s a classic-looking matchup. There are definitely others out there — USC/Notre Dame or Texas/Oklahoma, for example — but this is my favorite. Let’s hope it stays that way next year when Michigan goes to Adidas. Considering the history, I don’t think there’s much to worry about. — Bryan

Does anyone know how many buckeye stickers can fit on an Ohio State helmet? If so, has any player ever completely filled their helmet with buckeyes?
Does anyone know how many buckeye stickers can fit on an Ohio State helmet? If so, has any player ever completely filled their helmet with buckeyes?
It would depend on the size of the buckeye. In the days of Woody Hayes & link, the buckeyes were much larger, limiting the potential count per helmet.

I’ve always been curious, how does somebody get a Buckeye and who gives it out. I assume it is given by coaches for good plays, but I’m not sure. Thanks for your help.

Few schools are more proud of its football traditions than Ohio State, and its buckeye leaves are no exception. In fact, Ohio State does more than any other school to publicize its practice. A chart in the Woody Hayes football building chronicles the number of leaves earned by each player.

Ohio State is perhaps the oldest practitioner of helmet stickerology. The tradition dates back to 1968 and the height of the Woody Hayes Era. And what’s a buckeye, you ask? It’s called a chestnut in most parts of the country.

The fact that both fields now have flubberturf and they don’t get any grass stains on their unis takes this one down several notches.

In my humble opinion, helmet stickers look far more immature than excessive eye black. I think my little sister had a similar formula to Ohio State’s for putting “My Little Kitty” and “Strawberry Shortcake” stickers on her trapper keepers. I always thought Mark Richt was something of a clown for pulling such a stunt in a real college football conference.

It would be classic football, except it’s being played on fake turf. Play it on real grass, then it’s classic.

Are we really still talking about excessive eye black? Can’t we give that one a rest.

I like Ohio State’s stickers, but other colleges not so much.

    I agree, on all counts.

And, a buckeye and a chestnut aren’t the same thing, though they’re similar. Take it from someone who has been hit in the head by both while walking under trees, they’re not the same.

But, I’ve never been struck by lightning. Go figure.

Agreed, but I think FSU’s tomahawk stickers look pretty sweet too.

p.s. if your nickname is the RED RAIDERS, why the hell are you wearing all black?

Not a fan of either team, but they both have a look that works.

There haven’t been many changes in the looks for those two teams since I started watching around ’70, excepting socks. NCAA should follow NFL’s lead on having socks required. I’m looking forward to the end of the “low whites” fad too.

Florida State has the best looking helmets in college football.

Luckman with a classic post! He sees the words “eye black” in a post and instead of pretending to read said post to see it only tangentially references yesterday’s debate without engaging in it he says “Are we really still talking about excessive eye black? Can’t we give that one a rest. (sic)” which is replied to two or three times. Genius!

Not surprised he thinks FSU helmets are neat. The tomahawks are lame just like the Seminole nation for rolling over and letting their name and image be besmirched by a “school” whose athletic program repeatedly cuts corners to win and isn’t even doing much of that lately. Class is something the vast majority of Semi-hole players neither attend or embody.

i didn’t think luckman said anything about FSU’s helmets…i believe that was hed-bone

    /carry on

I can’t find a decent picture, but Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon was wearing a dodgy beany hat, as well as what appeared to be a warm-up suit underneath his jersey, as they beat Scotland last night. He looked like he should’ve been playing in a park somewhere.

Are you kidding? After all the stink that was made yesterday over that picture, you just happened to reference eye black and how you perceive it? I don’t buy it. You were clearly referencing yesterday’s post and Luckman was on the money.

Do buckeyes reset with each football season or does the player keep them his whole career?

By the way, those new Louisville uniforms are pretty bad- especially the “Cards” on the rear neckline.

    It’s a reset each year.

Each year, Ohio State’s helmets start our blank and game 2 is when we see the first buckeye leaf stickers.

As for a career tally, I know of no such thing.

I am listening to the Browns game on the radio and the announcers just mentioned that Kellen Winslow and Steve Heiden are wearing “lineman type lemets because they knew this would be a hard hitting game instead of their ussual helmets” I assume they are wearing the Revolution but I am not within the TV range to watch it.

Phillies will be unveiling their home alternates link.

Some of us may recall that they’ve been link (original linked thread has been archived and registration is required). link.

In MLS Cup 2007, refs in green jerseys. Must say that’s sharp looking with the black trim. Also, Houston in Orange, New England in blue…and Houston won 2-1.

also for helmet stickers, i like UGA’s b/c they don’t take up that much space on the helmet and everyone’s helmet still looks the same, unlike OSU’s.

Watching the Ravens/Browns game I can’t help but notice how much better Cleveland’s striped socks looked compared to the all brown.

BTW, on the same Flickr account as the Phils’ leaked alternates, there’s the Mets final season at Shea Stadium logo, and in the MLB Shop, specifically the Yankees Shop, there is a small look at the Yankee Stadium final season logo with the front of the original Yankee Stadium pre-renovation front facade. Also, the Yanks will double patch with the ASG logo on the right sleeve and the Yankee Stadium logo on the left.

Did anyone mention that the Blue Jays are also having a 1977 replica alternate as well in light blue?

Im thinking that the Jaguars Unis may have something to do with why they are winning today at halftime….they sorta look like a football team today!

Was at the Oregon/Portland basketball game last night and UO wore all green…no black involved. Not a big deal, but there was talk that they got rid of the green unis and now had a green and black combo instead. It was good to see no black…

Rutgers should never do it again, simply because they have red helmets. Tech on the other hand looked so good, i was jealous of those guys. They looked fast, intimidating, and just all-around bad ass. But it only works because the helmet matches the rest of the uniform.

I failed to mention on original post, Jets in the all green, cucumber look too.

Mike Sellers (Redskins) wearing a Schutt Ion helmet. First time I’ve seen one in a game outside of the Giants. Really stark with the gold facemask.

The Dawgs were giving out bones for good plays long before Richt came along, although in the Herschel era they wore tiny stars, applied to the back of the helmet in rows of circles around the numbers on the back of the helmet.

A unique thing about Georgia’s bones is that you can immediately recognize the ones given for academic achievement…those bones are black.

I’m not the hugest fan of these stickers, especially near the end of the year when they take up so much space. Ohio State’s buckeyes are ok because that’s the only thing on the helmet.

That’s why I love the Bills’ white throwback helmets…the backs are completely uncluttered.

Geese and skulls on the left, stars and footballs on the right. Stickets were black ink on a transparent back, about the size of the OSU Buckeyes.

We had white helmets with a simple black-green-black stripe and a green/black Stanford style S, so the clutter added a bit of life to the helmets.

so I thought Michigan used to wear the pride stickers… and in a google search I came across something I never knew. In the Ara Parseghian days, ND had pride stickers!!!

UMich wore the stickers during Bo’s era, and it appears into Moeller’s time as coach. I’m pretty sure Carr did away with them. Who knows? The stickers might be back next year! But I hope not, because they really mess with the stripes and wings look. They only work with OSU and FSU because they are on light backgrounds and otherwise simple designs, IMO.

Georgia’s helmet stickers always have annoyed me to no end (maybe because I’m a Florida fan) that cluster of black and white bones always make me dizzy.

Stephen Jackson (of the Warriors) had the number 23 scribbled onto the back of his headband in black sharpie in the game in Toronto. Paying homage to Jason Richardson?

Number 5 on Miami’s basketball team has his U.S. flag patch upside down against Providence on ESPN2

Playing soccer growing up we only had the black ref unis. Since then, we’ve added fuschia, red, blue and yellow – short and long, some with the matrix of checks, some without, some with stripes, some without. Now we’ve got green?

If I remember correctly, the reasoning for introducing the colors was “safety” – meaning that when you wear all black in the summer, you get really, really hot. The reason they went with fuschia (and later yellow) was that you didn’t run into many teams wearing those colors, so you were assured the refs wouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the two teams.

So what’s the reasoning for red, blue and green, seeing as they are some of the most common colors?

I remember that once the red made it into rotation that I’d be carrying more equipment as a ref than I did as a player, since all 3 refs had to be wearing the same thing.

According To John Madden, Bill Belicheck’s coaches wear are “Give Ups” because it looks like he doenst care what he is wearing. LOL

    why aren’t Field Goals reviewable?
Field goals are reviewable – the Browns got their game-tying FG today on an overturned no-good call, and that was a booth review.

The officials in Seattle are also in the winter duds.

    Wimps.
The refs wanted to review and they contacted the guy in the booth who basically told them “too bad, I can’t review that” and he told them they had to figure it out themselves. On one of the review shows I heard it took 5:23 for them to make the “good” call

I am SOOOO sick of the term “Open Thread.” The new format came at my direction (the fact that it happened when Bryan took over for Vince is just coincidental). My apologies to anyone who doesn’t like it, but we’re gonna stick with the new format.

Going back to the Buckeye stickers, do the players put them on themselves or do equipment managers put them on? It kind of takes the spirit out of it if it’s like, “yay you! You get a Buckeye!! Now go hand in your helmet to the equipment managers…”

I would want to do it myself. But then again, I also visit a website all about uniforms…

ok thats fine. whether the term “open thread” is used or not, all im saying is that when i go back and look at past posts it was a lot easier to distinguish weekdays from weekends based on the entry headlines the old way. especially since days of the week arent currently used in any of the entry labeling.

i have no problems with using headlines like this moving forward, but may i suggest that when dating entries, you include the day of the week as well?

currently when entries are listed they are dated 2 different ways,
    November 18, 2007
    or
    11.18.07

it would be nicer to see,
    Sunday November 18, 2007
    and
    Sunday 11.18.07

I believe some of the Redskins were wearing script “R” rubber pieces on their helmet bumpers today, similar to the “NY” that the Giants have been using. I searched for pictures but cannot find any, but I believe Jason Campbell was one of the players with such a piece. Can anyone confirm this with visual proof?

Actually, I’m pretty sure the equip. managers do. I remember seeing a bit somewhere where the players come in to the next practise looking to see how many new ones they got. The bust chops about who got more, playfully lobby to have “injustices’ righted, and so on. Basically, it brings a bit of enthusiasm to day one of preparing for next Saturday.

    Re: Football helmet stickers

Michigan State started putting them on this season. It’s a tiny block S as they had changed their primary helmet logo to the Spartan. I for one do not care for the use of helmet stickers in team sports. I think it clutters up the helmet and aesthetically detracts from it. Either everyone gets a sticker or nobody gets one! I know I’m late to the party on this one, just throwing my two cents in.

Clinton Portis had his yellow shoe laces and funky socks going again in today’s Skins/Cowboys game. And thanks to Paul’s article a week or so ago, the entire game I kept thinking about how screwed up the Cowboys uniforms are.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet but I think Tressel’s jacket during the Michigan game was mighty snazzy.

The circa 1978 Nike symbol was a nice touch.

No visual evidence, but I noticed this too. Jason Campbell definitely had a “raised” script-R.

I think this would qualify. Not only is it a classic matchup, it’s a classic-looking matchup. There are definitely others out there – USC/Notre Dame or Texas/Oklahoma, for example – but this is my favorite. Let’s hope it stays that way next year when Michigan goes to Adidas. Considering the history, I don’t think there’s much to worry about. – Bryan

You forget what Adidas did to Notre Dame and Nebraska a few years ago before those ships were righted.

Another important thing to remember about OSU’s Buckeye Leaves; none are awarded if the team doesn’t win.
