Monday Morning Uni Watch

1860803821_b88bd96b77_o.jpg

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Last Tuesday I agonized over whether I should FedEx an American flag decal to Ladainian Tomlinson (for those who’ve been under a rock, his helmet has been flag-free all season). I never did send it, and now Tomlinson has made the matter moot, because he finally wore Old Glory in yesterday’s game against the Vikings, thereby ending the NFL season’s most entertaining uni-related storyline and bringing our weekly “Will he or won’t he?” game to a conclusion.

But a new game may be afoot. Several posts in yesterday’s comments section reported that Chargers wideout Chris Chambers was flag-free yesterday. No pics yet, but I’m looking. Not sure if Chambers wore a flag last week (which was his first game of the season), but it sounds like someone on the Chargers’ equipment staff is either asleep at the switch or else has a good sense of humor.

In other NFL notes from yesterday:

• Remember this? Something vaguely similar happened yesterday to Kansas City defensive lineman Tamba Hali, who delivered a big hit that sent part of his chinstrap sailing through the air. Not quite as cool as the flying number decal, but still something I’ve never seen before.

• Randy Moss’s numeral 8 was upside-down again.

• What do you get when you combine artificial turf, one team wearing solid black, and another team wearing solid black below the waist? Pretty much the ugliest game ever.

• The Eagles wore white at home last night to force the Cowboys into their “bad luck” blue jerseys. Didn’t quite work out the way they drew it up.

(Special thanks to Randy Williams and James Wortham for their Tomlinson screen grabs and to Blaine Williams for the Hali pics.)

Big Papi? No, Little Poppies!: With November 11th approaching, Canadian-born coaches and coaches of Canadian teams are starting to wear poppy pins on their lapels (for futher info on this phenomenon, look here). As it happens, I was in Toronto over the weekend for a wedding and saw lots of poppy-clad people all over the city. At one point I was talking about the poppies with one of my Canadian friends, and she mentioned something very Uni Watch-ish: The current poppy pins have a black center, but until a couple of years ago they had a green center.

That raised lots of questions: When exactly did the color change, and why? And who makes that decision? Like, is there an executive poppy committee somewhere in the governmental bureaucracy, or did the pin manufacturers just run out of green felt? Also, since real poppies have black centers, why was green ever used in the first place? What about the other British Commonwealth nations, which also wear poppies — do they go with the black or the green? My Canadian pals couldn’t answer any of these queries. Anyone..?

Other things I learned about the poppy pins: They tend not to stay on very long, because they have no backing clip; the lack of a clip also makes it fairly common for the wearer to get pricked; and apparently it’s customary to pick on the dorkiest kid in the class by covering him with as many poppies as possible.

I had hoped to buy a poppy pin myself (I was told to look for “the oldest, stooped-over-est old man you can find — he’ll probably be selling them”), but I didn’t come across a vendor during the course of my weekend. Dang.

Sock Summit: Longtime readers know I’m a huge fan of the pseudonymous sock savant known as Witesock (whose admirably obsessive web site is here, plus there’s a lengthy interview with him available here). So it was a big thrill for me, after years of false starts and missed connections, to finally meet the man himself over the weekend. I’m happy to report that he’s a peach of a guy. Over plates of chicken teriyaki and bibimbap (which he generously paid for), we spent the better part of two hours talking about socks, collecting, travel, socks, work, socks, and more socks. We probably could have kept going for a few hours more, but he had to get back to work.

Naturally, we compared socks: I was wearing my usual basic striped tube socks while Witesock had a twofer: black rugby hose over a pair of Miami Dolphins socks (to go with the jersey he’d worn for the occasion). “But doesn’t wearing two pairs of socks make your shoes a bit too snug?” I asked. To which he replied, “Oh, I usually buy my shoes half a size too big, to allow for that.” Now that’s dedication.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Interesting primitive facemask on display in this 1930 photo (with thanks to Kevin S. Whisman). ”¦ Speaking of primitive facemasks, look what Jared Wheeler found up for auction. ”¦ Interesting bit of uni lobbying on display here (as forwarded by Jacob Reed). ”¦ Ewww. ”¦ Now here’s a uniform category you don’t often see: Iranian women’s rugby. Details here (with thanks to Peter Chambers). ”¦ “Converse has resurrected its 1933 All-Star, which was the team shoe of the legendary Harlem Renaissance basketball team,” writes Steve Eschenbach. “They had to resort to eBay to get an original to work off of.” Details here. ”¦ Andy Enright, who says he works in the sporting goods biz, contributed a mother lode of insider info the other day: “Both the Schutt Ion and XP will not be offered in XL for 2008. Schutt does have the capability to make XL for NFL and college players when needed. Both helmets are fitting a little smaller than their counterparts, the DNA and Air Advantage. All Schutt large helmets are sized to fit 7 to 7-1/2, but I tried both helmets on today, size large, and both were a little tight, even though I wear a 7-3/8. The molds for these helmets cost about $200K each, so Schutt is waiting for public demand before moving forward on the XL size, probably late 2008 or 2009. Also, Eli Manning will wear the new helmet probably next year or later this year. They are having issues installing the radio earpiece. Schutt will also have a signature shoulder pad featuring Reggie Bush as well as Eli Manning, for use at the youth level. The individual pads will be in Saints and Giants team colors. Also, I’ve attached some pictures of LT’s new cleats to hit stores in April ’08, both the molded as well as the detachable. Didn’t take Nike long to replace Vick.” ”¦ Interesting logo creep placement here (as spotted by Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Take a look at this (which was sent my way by David Soline). Did the Bulls really wear pink warmup jackets? ”¦ The Pacers debuted their yellow alts on Friday. ”¦ These high school football socks would be awesome if not for, y’know, obvious reasons (big thanks to Michael Orr, who also sent along a rare high school example of FNOB). ”¦ I’m sure his parents are proud. ”¦ The Islanders brought Al Arbour back to coach one last game on Saturday night — the 1500th of his career — which occasioned lots of uni-related news items: (1) The team wore white at home. (2) They wore a special jersey patch. (3) As Mike from Queens points out, the patch caused a logjam with the “A” and “C” designations. (4) Arbour’s “retired number” banner, which had been No. 739 (his number of coaching wins) was replaced with a new banner. (5). Since the Isles won, the new banner will reportedly be replaced with yet another banner — No. 740. ”¦ Good info on the UMich hockey uniforms here (courtesy of Craig Barker). ”¦ Florida went with solid blue on Saturday. ”¦ And Oregon realy outdid themselves. But here’s a confession: As a big yellow/green fan, I kinda liked what the Ducks were doing on Saturday. All the diamondplate nonsense still rankles, natch, but I thought this was one of their better mix-and-match combos. ”¦ Great article here about a guy who works in Riddell’s helmet-testing facility (with thanks to Matt Lindner). ”¦ NHL jersey update here (with thanks to K.C. Kless). ”¦ In happier hockey news, good update on the NHL Winter Classic here (as forwarded by Sean Leahy). … And the Rangers continue to look much better with their straight-hemmed jerseys. Kudos to whoever made the modification decision. … I used to think the Quad Cities Swing were the only team with unevenly sized numerals (well, unless you count this), but that was before Blair Hough pointed me toward this photo of two ringette players. … Doug Linder spotted UCLA’s Luc Richard Mbah a Moute wearing some very unusual leg sleeves during a preseason game Friday night. Also, some of the UCLA cheerleaders suffered from Adidas logo creep, while others did not. ”¦ Reprinted from last night’s comments: Nice ad in yesterday’s Boston Globe. ”¦ I’m going to be busy until at least mid-afternoon. Vince will be minding the store until then.

I am very proud of my 7 year old daughter, Sophie. Yesterday I was sporting a Yankee t-shirt with a Nike logo (purchased before I “got it”) and she teased me all day about my logo creep.

I like the Rangers’ straight hems too, but does anyone else think that they’ve made the numbers slightly smaller? It’s like they had to shrink things so that they could fit that infernal, balance-destroying Reebok logo on the top.

And in that girls’ hockey photo set, there’s an example of link. #2 Robertson looks like she was a late addition with a hastily-made-up jersey.

Re. the Bulls’ “pink” warmups, I think it’s just the limited printing techniques that are making the red look lighter than it really is. They’ve always worn red, black & white.

And those Pacers alts look great. The Pacers & Lakers (and to a lesser extent, the Warriors) are the only NBA teams that can get away with wearing yellow and look good, IMO.

i dont have a pic, but in the final seconds of Amy Aggies’ embarrassing loss to OU on Saturday night, they trotted out for an onside kick, but…

One guy ran out late with a cut up jersey over his regular jersey (presumably because of duplicate numbers)… I had never seen such a thing….

    Anyone else see this??

Rememberance poppies are a big deal in the uk. Take a look at link for details, and images of the (black-centred) poppies from England.

The English poppy isn’t on a pin these days. It had a plastic stalk that has to be secured with a pin. Whereas in Scotland the poppies look slightly different, and are on a pin.

    A few things…

-The logo on the LaDainian Tomlinson cleat is both an interlocking ‘LT’ and also a ’21’. Creative, but I wish he had a different, more original nickname.

-The Al Arbour patch the Islanders wore should have been up on the shoulder to prevent the logjam effect.

-I’ve seen members of the VFW in California selling the poppy pins for Veteran’s Day.

Regarding the mismatched numbers on a jersey, I believe the Islanders “Fish Sticks” jersey had odd numbers as well, due to the wave pattern of the stipes on the lower part of the jersey. If memory serves, the names were kinda wavy as well.

Those LT Nike cleats are great looking. Does anyone know if they plan on putting out a cross-trainer in that style?

John Erskine, who currently play for the Capitals, always has his breezers unzipped and showing A LOT of leg when out on the ice. I did not ahve my camera for Friday night’s game, but he and Michael Nylander were both showing a lot of leg. At the uniform unveiling earlier this year I even asked Ben Clymer (no longer with the Caps, of course) about it and he just laughed and said some guys like to feel the wind against their thighs….to each his own I guess…

I actually did a bunch of reading about the poppy pins over the weekend.

The color changed to make the poppy more “florally correct.”

Lots of information at the Canadian Legion website: link

    from their FAQ:

    A. The centre of the Lapel Poppy was originally black but was changed to green more than twenty years ago to represent the green fields of France. In 2002, the centre was changed back to black to reflect the actual colours of the Poppies in Flanders a red flower with a black centre. It is intended that the black centre will remain as the standard for the production of all future Poppy material.

Love to hear that the Pens are wearing the Blue throwbacks. I can’t wait to see the 87 on the back of that beauty.

I couldn’t get a good look at it, and sorry if this has been discussed before, but it appeared that Demetrius Byrd, who caught a long TD for LSU against Alabama, may have had a backwards “R” on his nameplate on the back his jersey.

    Any corroborating evidence out there?

Well, if it helps him run like he did this week (321 rushing yards, tying SEC single-game record), I doubt they’ll worry about fixing it anytime soon.

In Saturday’s ManU – Arsenal match ManU’s link was sporting a poppy, while Arsenal’s link was not. Someone must have said something to Wenger because he had one in the postgame conference (looking for a pic)

someone in yesterday’s comments section was asking about a cowboys player who wears a funky helmet.

    it was link

When did the Chiefs start putting uni numbers on their chinstraps? Do other teams do this and I’ve just never noticed. Here’s a pic where it’s sorta visable.

    link

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…Calling Ladanian Tomlinson “LT” is just wrong. Same with calling Ivan Rodriguez “Pudge”. Or Ray Leonard “Sugar Ray”. Get your own nicknames! Are we going to start calling Adrian Peterson “Sweetness”? Ray Lewis will be “Hacksaw”? Will every oversized running back be “The Bus”? Tomlison should be “LDT” or something else. “LT” was Lawrence Taylor, end of story.

Most SPL link were wearing poppies this weekend. And, always link, my link were sporting them link, although some were link during the second half. Appears the black centers have taken the day.

    Something about the Poppies:

If all Canadian-born coaches or coaches with Canadian teams are wearing them, then why, in the photo of Joel Quennville, is American Tony Granato wearing one?

can’t believe you couldn’t find a poppy in toronto, there are boxes full of poppies with a slot for donations (usually $0.25) in literally every corner store in the country… that’s wild

Something funky is going on with the clock on the comments section. When I posted my comments about Tony Curtis, it appeared in the middle of the comments rather than at the end. Now lots of new comments are popping up before comments that were there first.

    Just an FYI.

    STONY CURTIS!!!!!!!

i havent read sundays comments yet and i rarely get a chance to read weekend comments so im not sure if its been posted.
saturday was the first time i saw arizona st play since its rose bowl against ohio state in like 96.
has it been mentioned that their v neck has the PT-42 crown on it?

    And Oregon realy outdid themselves.

I was watching the Oregon game and my wife looked at their unis and asked “What are those white things on their shoulders?” I explained them and she said, “Well, that’s just stupid.” Then I told her that it was Oregon and she said, “Well, no wonder since Oregon State has the sports bra uniforms. What the hell’s wrong with Oregon (the state) anyway?” She thought the Oregon uniforms were ugly as well as stupid.

“…some of the UCLA cheerleaders suffered from Adidas link while others did not. …”

5 bucks says that logo is on an under garment and not the uniform.

Apparently when they switched to green back in the day, they went whole hog because they bought enough green material to last the entire run. When they finally used up the green, they made the switch back to black. In 2002, there was a mixture of black and green poppies floating around as there were too many greens to discard, but not enough to fill the demand.

I was in NYC last Rememberance Day and noticed a lot (~20) people walking around with poppies, but they were different than the Canadian ones. Is there a trend starting south of the border?

Those retro’s are snazzy. But quick question, has Florida ever worn FU on their helmet? That would certainly make the rounds if they were to wear that as a retro.

Watching the FSU/BC tilt– do officials ever wear rain gear? do they have shirts that repel water? Has this ever been done?

Look no further then the AVP for volleyball logo creep and an interesting place to put a “Name On Back.” link

As if most of us weren’t looking there anyhow…

Did anyone catch the crazy face mask worn by someone on the Cowboys defense. The player’s number was something in the 90’s.

I tried looking for picture evidence, but its hard to find when I don’t know what player it was.

This player had a crazy amount of horizontal bars across the front of the mask.

Nothing “official” yet, but I would figure the football giants to wear their RED alternate/throwback jersey for this sunday’s game against dallas.

    has all the proper criteria:
    * big NFC east game
    * mid-late season
    * national broadcast

    2004: lost to philly
    2005: beat dallas
    2006: lost to dallas

interesting to note that the giants wore their “home” pants with the red alts in ’04, but wore the “road” pants in ’05 and ’06.

    must be a skiba-ism!

Well I didn’t find what I was looking for [just did a google image search]. But check out link bitchin’ display of logo creep.

There is an entire generation of people who could really care less about the original LT. I think the main reason the “LT” nickname is so huge for Tomlinson has been fantasy football. Millions and millions of people follow him for only that reason.

That’s a Riddell Revolution helmet, perhaps the safest helmet available and has been out since 2002. Somebody yesterday thought they saw someone wearing link, but it hasn’t hit the market yet. At first glimpse it appears similar to the link, with the raised middle section, but the Revo provides more jaw protection and the ear holes are different.

Regarding Oregon, I have to say that their uni situation works. The media mentions them almost every week, to go along with the BCS standings (BTW, OSU loses at MICH…UO vs LSU in New Orleans. :)

    – and the flames on the white and yellow helmets

Are the flames noticeable during games? Also, I must admit I turned on the Duck game on Saturday wondering what combo they’d wear this week. I thought it was going to be the link(minus the helmet, although if they had chosen that look, I probably would have marked out for the link)

The U in UCLA is blue not gold

Now that I go back and enlarge the pic, yup. When I was doing my usual “teeny pics on the right, article on the left” windows, his thumbpad kinda made the top of the U look gold, but it was pretty obvious at full size. False alarm.

Still, the outline, as predicted, looks good on the C.

The Eagles wore white at home last night to force the Cowboys into their “bad luck” blue jerseys. Didn’t quite work out the way they drew it up.

Maybe I’m the only one, and as a Redskins fan I just might be, but I think the Cowboys look better in the blue jerseys than the whites. I think most people are just accustomed to seeing them in the whites, so the blues look wrong.

Plus, as thoroughly analyzed in Paul’s link column, the white-jersey combination seems way more disfunctional than the blue-jersey combination.

Regarding Oregon, I have to say that their uni situation works. The media mentions them almost every week, to go along with the BCS standings (BTW, OSU loses at MICH…UO vs LSU in New Orleans. :)

Being a lifelong fan, season ticket holder, blah, blah…I still do not like them, but they have grown on me a little. In other words, I do not mind them as much as I used to. All I ask is that they:

    – get rid of the friggin black (DuckTheBlack)
    – and the wannabe bad ass Harley diamond plate
    – and the flames on the white and yellow helmets

Mix and match all you want after that. Free pub…why not?
Are the flames noticeable during games? Also, I must admit I turned on the Duck game on Saturday wondering what combo they’d wear this week. I thought it was going to be the link(minus the helmet, although if they had chosen that look, I probably would have marked out for the link)
No, you cannot see the flames on the helmets. But I dont care. I know they’re there, and that’s enough. I never minded the all yellow look that you linked to, or even those style of unis. The black and diamond plate just kills me. With the glossy paint they use I know the yellow helmets looked funky on TV and under the lights. Not really yellow, more like a ‘puke green-ish’. I’m guessing that’s why they haven’t worn them since.

Carr almost always wears gloves, and since going to the Panthers he been sticking with the white ones. Hence all the Mickey Mouse jokes that people have been making about him on a lot of sports blogs.

Hey Paul, in your NBA Season preview you mentioned that the Wiz were going to revert back to their more standard two color nameplates. I think all the injuries piling up have given people the impression that he is this huge contract that never did anything that wonderful because he never played. Check out his link in Detroit. From 1994 to 2000 he was, arguably, the best swing man in the NBA. I mean check out his second and third year in the league when he came within 1 rebound and 2 assists from averaging a triple double for 2 seasons. The man was a beast for those 6 seasons.

Sure he was cut short in Orlando, but the years he played the majority of the season he was an above average player. I’m looking at 04-05 and last season. Sure he wasn’t the same as he was those early years, but after countless ankle surgeries who is?

My guess is the position that pays him the most. And as long as it’s not with the Red Sox I don’t care… at all.

One guy ran out late with a cut up jersey over his regular jersey (presumably because of duplicate numbers)… I had never seen such a thing….

I recall watching a Southwest Conference game in the late ’70s with the University of Houston fielding an onside kick. The opponents kicked it directly at #64, who deftly grabbed it. The cameras followed him to the bench, where he removed a tearaway-style jersey and was revealed as running back John Newhouse.

Joe Torre, just introduced as Dodger manager, modeling uni #6. I cant believe that they didnt retire #6 for Steve Garvey. I think it was unofficially retired until now. Garvey must now feel as good as Grady Little.

Well, it was worn last season by Tony Abreu.

As a Yankee fan, I’m happy he’s keeping the #6, as he switched to that number when he came to NY.

Now the real question is if Derek Lowe will give up his #23 for Mattingly…

I’m also glad Torre chose 6 again. As for Lowe giving up 23, um no. Mattingly made his mark as a player, he’s got to earn it as a coach. The NL West is gonna have a different look next season, Torre is here and Alex Rodriguez going to the Giants.

#6 should have been retired for Carl Furillo long before Garvey ever got a sniff of it. BTW, is Garvey the only player to get his # retired by his pension team, but not his primary team?

As somebody already mentined, the official name of the baseball team in the Quad Cities is Swing of the Quad Cities, not Quad Cities Swing. They just switched ownership, and are changing their team name again. They are currently hosting a name the team contest, so get your suggestions in. I just don’t know where to go to do that.

I can’t believe you only donate a quarter when you pick up a poppy. That’s almost criminal.

The poppies do fall out. Some people take the small Canadian flag button pins (with the clutch back) and pin those through the center to keep the poppy stuck in.

Others realize that the Legion didn’t win the World Wars by being dumb and simply pony up for another poppy, which we will lose a week later.

I had hoped to buy a poppy pin myself…but I didn’t come across a vendor during the course of my weekend. Dang.

Thank you Todd for pointing out everything that I was too lazy to.

This situation does bring up the philosophical question of whether a team, in a sport with no salary cap, can really overpay someone who might end up being among the greatest players ever. The man is on track to easily surpass the all time home run record for christ’s sake. He was responsible for 13 wins last year, just by himself (those of you who don’t like crazy baseball stats like WARP, VORP, and others should ignore that last part as it will be meaningless).

    timmy,

the steelers wore white at home from 1966 thru 1969.

Thanks. I guess I really didn’t follow them that closely in the sixties, since I have no recollection of this. Do we have any idea why they went to white? (I’d guess going back to black coincided with moving to Three Rivers.)

HOLY SHIT!!!! EK is back, I was wondering if you were still here Ek. How you been my man? That’s almost all,
The stupid side panel has invaded other places as well. The store down the road, Bel-Air/Ralieys, (Nor Cal) has added white panels and the “shoulder underhorns” to the EE’s shirts. Now there is unneeded white on the once all maroon shirts.

quick, someone get a screen grab. At the 13 minute mark of the rangers/flyers game, Jason Strudwick of the Rangers’ name bar was half falling off (not sewn on very well). It will be interesting to note whether the bar disappears or is fixed during the game

During the 2nd fight in the Ranger game tonight, the Rangers’ Ryan Strudwick was in a fight and his nameplate got half ripped off.

i just saw that, and was going to comment. you guys are too fast.

you think the new jersey “system” means weaker nameplates?

Man you guys are quick, I run to my computer to say Strdwick’s nameplate was falling off, only to be beaten atleast twice :(

Boggs’s number has only been retired by Tampa Bay.

Players with their number(s) retired by multiple teams (by last name):
44-Aaron – Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers
29-Carew – Minnesota Twins, California Angels

    34/30-Ryan – Houston Astros (34), Texas Rangers (34), California Angels (30)

…and you can’t forget #8 being retired twice by the Yanks. And again after Mo Rivera retires (along with Jackie Robinson’s 42).

The Univestiy of North Dakota Fighting Sioux football team wore black pants at home against St. Cloud State on saturday. It was the the first time since 2000 the black pants were worn at home. Then this season, they started wearing a pink “Hockey Fights Cancer” decal.

But tonight, I’ve noticed during the Flyers-Rangers game (on right now on Versus), they’re wearing a different decal that looks like a semi-circle with another semi-circle on top. Does anyone know what it is?

Anyway, the person they interviewed had a GSU football helmet on her desk and it was…wow. It was viagara blue with a weird line drawing of a cartoon panther head. Just not good.

The question is if anyone can find a pic of it, or if Paul may know someone who can confirm that this, indeed, is the GSU helmet.
Try the following…

You are right…they are bad…the logo looks like one of the selections for creating you own team in Madden 08…

With all 33 former steelers players… what if there was a typo on their jerseys… how embarrassing/disrespectful would that have been/ to tha all-time team? and i love my steelers’ jerseys tonight.

Speaking of Furman, my high school (Richmond County, NC) link with a different color scheme. We’ve been using it at least since I was there 10 or so years ago. We switched to a different logo a few years ago but have since switched back. In looking for that other logo, I found a pic of a JV game this year. Two players are wearing different helmets — one with the old logo and one with the current one! (Not to mention nicer looking pants than the varsity.)

(Sorry for not linking that URL…it doesn’t look like the system will let me put two links in this post.)

No, there is a flag. No pics, but they whenever he gets back up from a run, they show the back of his helmet with a flag

And now it’s back up. This wasn’t just our server — it was every site served by Mosso, our host company. Just a momentary hiccup, they’ve assured me.

    Re: Poppy Pin.

Came across this pic of English Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton pimping his new autobiography. Looks like a black center to his poppy.

One more poppy thought. I think you had previously mention the New Zealand All Blacks wearing an embroidered poppy of their jersey during the November tour matches to the Northern Hemisphere. Seems like their poppy has a red center. (probably because a black one wouldn’t show on their black jersey).

Most people I know call him LT2…

    it was link
That’s a Riddell Revolution helmet, perhaps the safest helmet available and has been out since 2002. Somebody yesterday thought they saw someone wearing link, but it hasn’t hit the market yet. At first glimpse it appears similar to the link, with the raised middle section, but the Revo provides more jaw protection and the ear holes are different.
I am still pissed about this damn technology and stuff, I thought I had the game recording and while I was trying to rewind to verifiy which player it was on I accidently changed the channel… causing me to lose what I had watched from the memory…. I could have sworn it was the new Xenith helmet… it did not have the same ear holes or jaw as a Revolution… I could just be slowly losing my mind though back to looking at wire pictures to see if I can find it
It was probably the new schutt helmet link

Did the Red Wings change their lettering? Last time I checked, the lettering UMich uses is a round block with vertical arching, similar to the Avalanche; not quite the same as the very tall, block (with vertical arching) that the Red Wings use.

Also, does anyone else think the “two color” comment about their lettering was a little misleading, because it’s still three layers?
Forgive the rant but the announcers and people raggin on the Steelers 75th unis can totally bite me. All I keep hearing is the helmets are hideous. If that is a fact then Green Bay’s helmets are hideous. Why does everyone have a problem with yellow? Are the Niners and Saints helmets shitty? These uniforms tonight go back to 1933 their beginnings. To all those nay-sayers I say piss off…you could only wish your team had the tradition of the Steelers. And just so you don’t try that old “my team never” attitude…The Redskins had gold helmets, the Bears had orange jerseys, the Giants had red stripes on their helmet, the packers have always had gold helmets, the niners had “silver” helmets?…the browns had white…so on and etc….so piss off about your criticism of my beloved Steelers.
Dude, try decaf. I like the Steelers too but I thought the throwbacks looked horrible. And it seems redundant to have a 75th anniversary patch on a throwback jersey.
