For as much that has changed with NHL uniforms over the past year, it’s good to see that some things stay the same, like Marc Savard rocking the yellow laces. Alexander Ovechkin and Jaromir Jagr have stayed with the colorful skate attire too. Any new yellow lace converts this year? Has anyone stopped using them since last season? —Vince

Erg, Peter Schaefer’s still tucking his jersey in (he’s on the left). It’s really annoying. The first game in Dallas, you could barely make out the numbers.

Glad to see the Bruins finally scoring. And scoring. And scoring.

I haven’t seen this kind of shoelace-expressionism since the heyday of Agnostic Front.

With the advent of the newly-designed uniforms, I’ve seen a lot of players wear the shirt tails tucked in — and for good reason. When the flap is worn outside, it looks very sloppy and gives the uniform a “slacker” look. You never had that problem with the traditional sweater style jersey.

Jagr’s yellow laces look bad with his great Ranger red-and-blues. Is there some special significance to the yellow-ness? ‘Wax’ laces, whatrthose?

from Jason Stark’s column this morning:

You can’t say the Diamondbacks didn’t pull out every last trick they could think of. Those sneaky Arizonans even tried switching uniforms Friday — because it meant that, by going to their black tops, the Rockies would have to abandon their own lucky black shirts and wear gray.

A brilliant ploy, no doubt. But even that didn’t stop The Team That Never Loses.

“Aw, gray, black. It doesn’t really matter to us anymore,” said (Rockies’ CF Ryan) Spilborghs. “Right now, we’d wear pink if we had to.”

I thought it was a dumb move – it was more of a habit than a superstition to the Rockies, and Zona’s management seemed to make a statement to their team: “We believe your only chance to beat this team is for us to jinx them out of their laundry.”

They are normal hockey laces, only dipped in melted parrafin at some point during the production. They allow you to tie your skates tighter. Traditionally only available in yellow, you can now get them in black, white (with the black ticks) white (no ticks), and yellow. They are usually an aftermarket upgrade to one’s skates, however they do come as standard equipment on the Caddilac of hockey skates-Graf’s.

Over the first week or so of the NHL season I have seen a TON of players tucking/partially tucking the jerseys into their hip pads…I guess it makes sense since the jerseys were partially designed to be tucked…but they look like the local over 50 league players when they do that!

It’s looking like the new Nike college bball unis are out. You can go to link
It looks like UNC is finally leaving Nike-world, Md. is adding a yellow jersey, and Syracuse is dropping navy for gray in its color scheme.

It’s good to see UNC look normal again.

But man those Kansas State jerseys are hideous!

Apparently both the Red Wings & Oilers were wearing their “road” whites for home games last night (Detroit vs. Chicago & Edmonton vs. Vancouver). Anyone have an idea why this was done or if we can expect more teams to do this? The rest of the games last night all featured home teams wearing the dark jerseys.

Rutgers is rockin’ the Carrier Dome with some sweet black pants. Perhaps Illinois should try some blue pants on the road rather than the orange they are sporintg today at Iowa.

No, UNC is not putting down the Nike kool-aid. If anything they’re going back for another serving by switching to the System of Dress.

Most hockey teams will have a few “reverse sweater games,” where they wear their road shirts at home, every year. It’s no big deal, though maybe there’ll be more this year with the temporary lack of third sweaters.

Also, I’m not sure what’s the point of having separate Nike and Jordan brands when they all use the same design template (Georgetown is another Jordan school, but uses the standard shoulder stripes).

I think you may see it more then “normal” due to the lack of a 3rd jersey. For whatever reason the NHL/RBK have decided that this year everyone can only have 2 jerseys…so when you would normally wear a 3rd jersey to “change it up” you may see teams wear whites at home (which should be their home jersey anyways)

Patrice Evra’s crest is not on his shirt (France v. Faroe Islands, 40 mins).

FWIW, I’m still wearing yellow waxed laces.

I’m sure someone else has already sent this over, but there’s an auction for a sick game worn link jersey ending Sunday.

A desperate move that a traditional franchise would never have done – or been able to do, in the case of teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals or Phillies.

Now that’s rich. You have to watch a commercial to see the commercial.

I’m really surprised the D-Backs uniform shenanigans weren’t the top topic today; they specifically wore black so that the Rockies couldn’t. Not that it helped.

A desperate move that a traditional franchise would never have done – or been able to do, in the case of teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals or Phillies.

Ah, pfft. I was hoping the Diamondbacks would win last night, and then the Rockies could sweep at Coors; that way, the Red Sox would have to whip up a black alternate for the World Series. ;-)

Seriously, though, I am a fan of virtually anything that gets away from white, red, blue and grey. The Rockies’ black vests are a great example. (The Backs’ black, though, looked awful.)

#42 and #96 (I think) for Illinois, are sporting the new Optimus Prime/Power Ranger helmet that the NY Giants’ Lavar Arrington wears.

    No pics though…

Toledo’s road jerseys have blue lettering on white nameplates this week. Prior to this week they’ve been gold on blue (which looked pretty rough on the road whites).
Wonder if they were saving a buck and using home nampelates on the roadies prior to this week.. does that happen, or is it more likely poor judgement that was corrected late?

Yea, I don’t like that shirt tail flap either. It makes it look like they didn’t tuck in their shirts but were supposed to. That flap looks like hockey players are in their pajamas. And we all know how lots of Uniwatchers feel about pajamas!

    You can’t be serious.

When I said UNC was leaving Nikeworld, I meant that they were losing the shoulder stripes that was so consistent with Nikeworld of last year. In comparison, the OSU/UF/Syr. style is rather plain. UNC is at least taking a step up.

Hey guys, link. What’s that circled 1 patch? My best guess is some sort of “one last season” tribute (it’s from 1996, the last season at Memorial Auditorium), but I guess it could be a commemorative player patch as well. Anybody know for sure?

I used to hate the Rockies’ blacks, but that was because they were to big and stuck out past the shoulders. That white stripe stuck out too far and they looked like those awful turn-ahead-the-clock sleeves. They seem to have fit them better, this year. Now they look fine.

It’s the Redskins-style striping. Two thick stripes look a bit awkward to me.

For example, even though a Lexus is essentially a pricey Toyota, they’ve positioned the sub-brand to relate very differently to customers than the parent brand.

I know that uniforms are only a part of the Jordan brand, but it’s the most visible part. Nike is trying to position Jordan as a premium brand, the Lexus to Nike’s Toyota if you will, but when they’re just rebadging the Nike jerseys, that erodes Jordan brand’s value and makes it seem like the Dodge to Nike’s Plymouth.

I’ll say this right now. I like the system of dress unis. With the exception of Syracuse wearing silver, all of the system of dress unis have had really simple classic looking designs. Most importantly they allow Nike to “brand” the uniforms without logocreep or resorting to the nike yolk. As for the look and fit of the new Nikes, I think the slimmer jersey looks great, its more dynamic and less bulky. The shorts don’t really need to be that long but all college shorts are really long now anyways. I say go with it.

What exactly was stopping the Rockies from wearing their black jerseys?

I remember several occasions where both teams wore the same color…specifically an interleague contest between the Cubs and Royals in Kansas City where both teams wore their blue jerseys. This might be an interesting column idea Paul.

    Maybe the team had two #1’s? I don’t know…

I’m a Rutgers fan and I have to say that our white jerseys look terrible with black pants.

It also seems like the necklines on some of the skill players’ jerseys go extremely low

About the “1A” Uniform number mentioned a few posts up:

    1A And 1B
During the course of his legendary career, Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant was known as an innovator of introducing changes in the game of football. One change Bryant introduced during his tenure at Kentucky was the use of a unique number system to identify twins Harry and Larry Jones, who both lettered three years (1950-52) with the Wildcats. Harry wore 1A and Larry wore 1B. Harry led the Wildcats in all-purpose yardage in 1951 with 964 while Larry led UK in kickoff returns (21.1 avg) in 952.

The story is halfway down this page:

“We had nice link, I always remembered those,” center George Wilson said. “We always at least looked nice.”

a few interesting items from link story in today’s Seattle P-I:

    – a huge chandelier hung above the court at the Cow Palace
    – celebrity miniature golf was part of the pregame ‘festivities’
    – Tom Meschery’s jersey was retired by the Warriors, on the same night he played his first game for the Sonics

I was watching the UM and GT game and at one point there was a shot of two Tech players on the bench wearing black executioner hood looking things. Are these part of some sort of cooling system or just fetish items?

The Desean Jackson thing.. previously I didn’t think it was the jersey tucked into the belt.

A recent Sports Illustrated had a very clear photo that proves me wrong.. the stripe on the side is split at the bottom, and that part pops out below the tuck, making it look like two seperate jerseys. I was wrong, it is one jersey tucked into the belt.

    Now.. WHY?

    Re: #14

Is there a name for the revived-trendy basketball uni style which UNC is wearing? (which is a sleeveless t-shirt, essentially)

UConn looks atrocious; the University of Maryland has sunk to a new low (who even knew that was possible???) with the new gold jersey; and I think it’s really cool that Syracuse’s whites say “ORANGE” on the front.

UNC jersey style is called “System of Dress” from Nike.

Ohio State and Syracuse wore them last year during March Madness. I like them, although I’m not a huge fan of baddy shorts…it doesn’t look that bad.

Off Topic…I notice that my computer runs really slow when I type responses on UniWatch. Does this happen to anyone else? Is it because my message is simultaneously “previewed” at the bottom eof the screen?

Here’s a link of the randomness of Auburn’s nameplates on their away uniforms. THREE different variations: Condensed bold, bold, and regular. I’d call it sloppy, but then again they’ve won 15 games in a row in them. So War Road-Whites, I guess.

I think Steve DeBerg used to wear yellow laces when he played for Kansas City. Sorry no picture to back it up though.

I know a Rutgers Stuent Equipment Guy and I know that Rutgers currently has a stash of black jerseys and black pants somewhere in a closet. They got them last year and were considering wearing them against Lousiville but Louisville had worn black jerseys previously that year. There is talk of them debuting those against South Florida, but no word yet. The players do not even know that they have them yet. They decided to go with the black pants today but they do have black jerseys to go with them.

those Rutgers black pants just looked weird. Red helmet, jersey with no black on it, and then solid black pants.

no need to have black pants just to have alternate choices
