When I was 16, I started reading a new sports magazine. In one issue, their Q&A column included the following question: “I keep hearing about this nude female mud wrestling thing, but I don’t understand it — what’s the deal?” The magazine’s answer: “The tricky part is finding the nude female mud. After that it’s pretty self-explanatory.” In another issue they had an article on sports etiquette — the polite thing to do when playing baseball, the polite thing to do when playing football, and so on. The last section, devoted to “Dangerous Sports,” read like this: “The only polite thing to do when engaged in dangerous sports, like auto racing, hang-gliding, cliff-diving, and so on, is to die. After all, that’s what everyone’s waiting around for.”
The magazine in question was Inside Sports, which launched around 1980. As the above-quoted passages suggest, it was clever and irreverent way before ESPN developed a reputation for those qualities, and it also featured serious, smart reportage. The two big sports mags back then were Sports Illustrated and, my favorite, the now-defunct Sport (which had published a letter of mine when I was 13, something I was insufferably pleased about for weeks), but Inside Sports was much more intelligent and ambitious than either of them, featuring an editorial voice that I now recognize as having been derived from Esquire, Rolling Stone, and other non-sports mags.
The golden age of Inside Sports, if you want to call it that, didn’t last very long. The intelligence and cleverness soon flattened out, and the magazine became much more conventional, so I stopped reading it. It was later sold (several times, I think) and become a struggling fringe player in the sports media world. I don’t recall when it finally went belly-up, but I’d long since moved on.
I still have fond memories of those early issues, however. So I was intrigued when reader Mike Cesarano (who compiled the Mets uniform breakdown featured on the Ultimate Mets Database site) recently got in touch with the following communiqué:
Paul, remember the magazine Inside Sports? I remember seeing a prototype of a new Yankee uni modeled by Phil Rizzuto in an issue of that magazine in 1980 or 1981. I remember that it was black and white with a red N on the right breast and a red Y on the left breast. … It would be cool to track down a pic of this. I’ll look but I thought you might remember the same pictures.
I didn’t remember this at all, but I encouraged Mike to find the issue in question. He said he’d investigate on eBay and get back to me.
That was back in mid-August. I’d forgotten about the whole thing until two nights ago, when Mike e-mailed to let me know he’d found a copy of the issue. He attached a bunch of scans — and they’re doozies.
Here’s the scoop: For their April 30th, 1980 issue, Inside Sports commissioned fashion designers Geoffrey Beene, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta (or as Fitzy likes to call him, “Oscar de la Go Fuck Yourself”) to create new baseball uniforms for the Cardinals, White Sox, and Yankees. Then they had those teams’ TV announcers — Jack Buck, Harry Caray, and Phil Rizzuto, respectively — model the unis and had Roy Blount Jr. chronicle the proceedings. The results, rather predictably, were pretty brutal, as you can see here, here, and here.
I’m not even going to discuss the uniforms, because they’re ridiculous. In fact, the whole concept was pretty stupid, but it’s worth remembering that uniform coverage was pretty much non-existent back then, so this was uncharted territory (you can see the entire article here, here, and here, and I strong recommend check out the joke in the next-to-last paragraph). There’s all sorts of interesting uni-related chatter, and Blount — then, as now, a very good writer — gets off some good lines along the way (his simple assessment of the Padres’ uniforms (which at the time looked like this): “Remember those Buicks with all the extra chrome?”). The most telling passage comes when he sums up the state of uniform design:
Light, bright, tight, stretchy double knits have replaced voluminous flannel; pullover shirts have tended to replace button-ups; and elastic waistbands have supplanted most belts. (How many sentences like that do you read in sports magazines?)
Poor Blount, feeling all self-conscious (and, probably, worried about being called gay) just because he was writing about uniforms. He couldn’t have foreseen the advent of something like Uni Watch. But in his small way, he and Inside Sports helped lay the groundwork for it.
Friendly Reminder: As of next Monday, Uni Watch reveille will blow at 10:15 a.m., not 9:00 a.m. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Uni Watch News Ticker: As we all know by now, Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s 14-letter surname is the longest in MLB history. It is not, however, the longest in professional history (i.e., including the minors). That distinction apparently belongs to Eric Stuckenschneider (16 letters!), who played in the A’s and Dodgers systems in the 1990s. He never made it to the bigs, but he must have been invited to spring training one year or something like that, because Eric Walker has turned up pics of an A’s jersey with Stuckenschneider’s name. Spotting phonies has never been my strongest suit, but this looks pretty authentic to me, right down to the tagging. Anyone more versed in game-worn jerseys care to weigh in? ”¦ Cubs backstop Geovany Soto has his nickname on his chest protector collar (as spotted by Jon Aubry). ”¦ Kevin Wright reports that the Milwaukee Admirals will have pink ice on October 19th, 24th and 27th (for breast cancer awareness, natch). “I’ll be in attendance for at least two of these games so I’ll be sure to take some great pictures,” he says. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Here’s the anti-cancer decal NHL teams are wearing. ”¦ Weirdest injury in years. ”¦ Good find by Mark Loveland, who notes that Uni-watching extrends to politics. Be sure to check out the first comment — definitely someone who Doesn’t Get Itâ„¢. ”¦ According to an item at the very bottom of this article (which I first saw on the Chris Creamer board), the Titans will wear navy jerseys with light-blue pants this Sunday, which means they’ll look like the far-left design shown here. ”¦ Yesterday I linked to this photo, showing the bizarre color scheme of Waukegan High in Illinois. Jonathon Tillis has now provided an explanation: “Waukegan High split into two schools for a while: Waukegan East, whose colors were yellow and purple, and Waukegan West, whose colors were yellow and green. Around 1991 the schools merged back together. They couldn’t eliminate the purple without upsetting the East students and the same for the green with the West students. So they kept all three colors.” ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Martin Gerber is waiting for his mask to be painted, so for now it’s solid black. … Rank (or at least superstardom) has its priveleges (with thanks to Jesse Swanko). … Lots of late-breaking items from Douglas Mooney: Manny Corpas was just cooling off; the Panthers have had to delay some uniform number changes because the new jerseys weren’t ready; Devin Hester blacks out the swoosh during photo shoots because he hasn’t yet signed a shoe deal; and a bit of field hockey controversy regarding a statewide protective eyewear rule in New York.
I love that link, but nine combos is a bit much. I wish they would ditch the navy pants for the light blue permanently.
I was traveling for work yesterday, so I just found out about MD going to the “System of a Disaster”…I mean “System of a Dress.”
UUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
This is God awful news to me. The greatest design element on the jerseys, the checkerboard black and gold representing the MD flag, is now gone!
“….and the familiar black and yellow trim will run down the back of the jersey, bordering the name and number of the player.”
Are you kidding me?
I always remember the Inside Sports and Sport Magazine swimsuit issues being such weak copies of the Sports Illustrated one…..
when you look at the cover two things pop out…First, the cover story was written by Tony Kornheiser…I guess he’s been around for a while! Also one of their side stories is on the Pirates…I guarantee there hasn’t been a mention of them on the cover of a magazine in 15 years!
That cotton swab injury is very weird. However, I am going to have to go with Matt Wise of the Milwaukee Brewers for weirdest injury. Last year he was out for a while beczuse he injured himself with salad tongs during a post-game meal. The article put up on brewers.com also states some other freak injuries.

Hey Paul, I remember “Inside Sports” and vaguely recall that particular issue. My favorite part was “The Good Doctor”‘s Q&A. Inside Sports also published Thomas Boswell’s annual “Total Average” leaders up until a math error leading to a trashing of some player -0- I forget who now — completely embarrassed the stat to death. That stat was the right idea (bases v. outs) but badly executed.
Has anybody else noticed that MLB uniforms have gotten baggier over the past 5 years or so? Why is this?
Are the uniforms still double-knit or are they a different material now?
I love that link, but nine combos is a bit much. I wish they would ditch the navy pants for the light blue permanently.
I’ll be at the Titans game Sunday but I am not looking forward to seeing those hideous uniforms. This will be the 8th different uniform combo they’ve worn. Here’s hoping for the light blue jerseys and white pants to complete the set.
I just added a bunch of items to the end of the Ticker.
I used to pick up Sport magazine back in the early 90s. There was a bookshop over here that’d carry a load of American magazine, and at the time it was about my only way of getting info on the NBA & NHL. Then they stopped selling it, and started carrying Inside Sports…
Man, what a difference! Sport was so stuffy, whereas I.S. had that irreverant touch that’d go on to shape my (some would say) unique sense of humour. I’m tempted to dig out my old copies.
The Columbus Crew is the latest MLS team to sell their front of their uni. Next year thier kits will feature the link.
Anyone else remember The National, the daily sports newspaper run(?) by Frank DeFord. My dad subscribed to that when I was young and it was about the best publication around. I’m pretty sure he still has the first and last issues. I forget for sure but my dad surmised that they had to fold because they couldn’t continue to pay the writers that they had stolen from all the other good mags/papers. Good times!
Your peice on IS (opposite of SI was no mistake as IS was owned by Newsweek, IIRC) was so interesting it caused me to forget why I came here this morning which was to remark, apropos of nothing, that the black digits on the back of the D-backs unis look sharp.
Isn’t it interesting that the Tennessee Titans (who had to shed that image of the Houston Oilers, are now, 10 years later dressing VERY similarly to the Oilers? (White Jerseys and Oilier Blue Pants?)
Those 3 great legends in those hideous uniforms are spectacular…that shows the class of each of them that they would be in a major magazine article wearing those atrocities. You would never see the windbags, err announcers of the Sox, Yanks and Cards do something like that today. (Of course I still think the only thing Joe Buck shares with his famous father is his last name, because talent must have missed a generation or there is no way Joe is from Jack’s Loins…)

YES I REMEMBER THE NATIONAL! They had some of the best baseball coverage EVER! (and yes they folded b/c they couldnt pay the writers) Hey I remember when Mike Lupica Left to join them and then had to go to the NY Daily News with his tail Between his legs for a JOB!
Has anyone really noticed the 2008 Republican National Convention logo? As far as I know, this may be the biggest case of adidas logo creep EVER!
Knowing nothing about the author of the article. He seems like a great candidate for a UniWatch interview. It would be interesting to hear his recollections.
REPRINTED FROM LAST NIGHT:
The other day someone mentioned that my alma mater (St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin) has recently updated their Green Knight logo. I have recently discovered their Identity guide online. I really like their updates and would like my fellow uni-watchers to critique the job of a great D-III school in North East Wisconsin.

If Crosby has that much pull with RBK for the Edge system he should tell them to drop those stupid jerseys and go back to the way it was. They look absolutely ridiculous on the ice. Particularly Edmonton and Toronto. The Oilers look like they have 70s blazers with suede sleeve patches. Talk about starting something and not finishing it.
Lots of classic college football uniforms on link and also a way to make Oregon’s uniform link.

I think they look good. I especially like the secondary images. I think I like the old shield image better but the new one is not bad by any means.
By the way, is my assupmtion that the “Green Knights” are inspired by the 14th century poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, correct?

Come on, that’s just a silly statement. How does it show class? You have no idea why they did it. Maybe they hated it but were paid well. Maybe their teams made them. And an equal arguement could be made that it would have shown more class to refuse to wear those stupid things.

I agree. Wearing ugly clothes and (possibly) money grubbing does not show class.
Not sure how scientific this is, but here’s the top 20 jerseys that were searched for:

I like TOR unis…….. look clean and simple. I do agree that EDM look like they took EVERY idea people had and used it on the same jersey. Horrible
From the article on mandatory protective eyewear in high school field hockey:
“Field hockey in high school is getting more aggressive than it used to be,” Vinger said. At most levels, athletes are hitting the ball up to 50 miles per hour, he said.
Jeepers, fifty miles an hour!? We’d better get some goggles, facemasks, body padding, and maybe even a security guard to stand next to each player!
(Forthose of you unfamiliar with English measurement, this is about 80 km/h, and there are Little Leaguers who can throw this fast. Being hit with such a ball isn’t pleasant, but it’s hardly that painful.)
The reference to long gone magazines reminds me of “Baseball” magazine (yep, the name was that simple) in the 1970s. I loved it in large part because of the great photos that it featured, which permitted much amateur study of the uniforms of the day. It also included a centerfold poster each month. Here is an example:

What are the rules of college teams both wearing link? How widespread was this practice back in the day? I saw Norfolk State wear yellow at Rutgers this year. Do they define limits for this? I find it very annoying
I remember Inside Sports as well. I also remember The National. I actually still have a few copies. I remember it was available in the newspaper boxes on the side of the road. The ones where you could put in 50 cents and take 4 copies (not that I ever did that).
My big thing when I was younger was sports magazines….just a few examples of the ones I had a million or so copies of:
Hockey Illustrated
Hockey Digest
Hockey Pictorial
“Goal” magazine…which was also sold as a program/magazine at NHL games
The “Petersen” season preview issues for Baseball, Football and Hockey.
Baseball Digest
Soccer Digest (I bought these strictly for the pics of the uniforms and logos from the NASL and MISL…and cause some goalies back in the late 70’s and early 80’s had some cool names…for example….Zoltan Toth….Enzo Dipede…Sepp Gatenhammer)
ahhh…the good old days,
I was watching the NY Rangers pregame last night and Stan Fischler (the hockey maven) and Al Trautwig were talking about the unis and the sweat problems that the players have. Fischler said to give ’em a chance, they will get used to ’em. Trautwig was complaining that an Original 6 team couldn’t even get the logo centered on the sweater. And to his credit, he did call it a sweater.

I still contend that the National Sports Daily was the best sports publication ever written. It’s a shame it didn’t have lasting power. In addition to money problems, unless you lived in NY, you couldn’t get a subscription. You had to go find a newspaper box if you wanted it. For someone like me who loves reading sports magazines, it was the best eight months of my life – I never missed an issue.
I, for one, like Joe Buck’s announcing a lot better than Jack Buck’s.

I loved The National. It was invaluable in the days before the Internet. I have the final issue tucked safely away somewhere.

I gotta say, I’ve played f.h. for ten yrs at different levels, with men and women, in different countries (and yes, the ball really does go that fast), and I never once saw a serious eye injury. The idea of goggles seems like overkill to me, especially if they’re the type that fog up, which would obviously affect vision. I agree with the the coach who commented that the real danger is poor field conditions. You wanna make the game safer, give ’em a better field, not goggles.
As odd a a color scheme link I still think its awesome. Sure is reminicent of link

I sent a message of nice words to the current Athletic Director Tim Bald of St. Norbert College to give my praises of the new design, and he responded with this e-mail:
“John:
Thanks for the nice words. The Fleur has been incorporated because it is the “mark” of the Norbertines and we exist because of the Norbertines. What the Focus groups told us is that we are proud, we are Knights and we are Norbertine. Therefore, we attempted to bring all of these ideas together without changing our current charging Knight. We “updated” the charging Knight and added to the inventory by providing a bit more flexibility as well as the typography.”
I also want to state that I believe the “Green” in “Green Knights” is solely because we are located right by Green Bay (the city and the actual bay). I had also asked Mr. Bald about the Fleur de lis and why it was incorporated in our design.

I do. I loved the idea of a daily paper devoted entirely to sports; used to read it every day while I was in college. At the time I was a fan of an out-of-town NFL team, so it was the best place to go for coverage.

When I was in college at Saint Mary’s across the river in Minnesota they changed our Cardinall logo. The reason for the change wwas at the time we had a logo of the cardinal playing each sport the school offered. Our Sports Information Director argued that schools that have different logos for each sport don’t have strong athletic departments and each teams also has it’s own idenity, resulting in a lower sense of pride for the team name instead of individual team sport. The change to what is now used can be seen here, link I didn’t mind the change, the only problem was it happened over the summer and the student body had no idea. That particular summer I had my goalie helmet painted with the hockey playing Cardinal on each side. Imagine my surprise on the first day of school when I found out my newly painted helmet had an outdated logo. The helemet was still bad ass though.
I do think many DIII schools have sharp logos, and many of them have classic uniforms.
Something I noticed during last nights Cubs-D-backs game, both teams have different colored names and number on the back of their jerseys. I dont know if this is a common thing or not. It seems kind of strange, but it looks good on both teams. Also, it was Thursday, so shouldn’t have Arizona been wearing their red alternates?
Late-breaking NFL news: All sideline personnel will be wearing pink pins this Sunday. For teams with a bye this week, it will be the following Sunday. Teams are being encouraged to do it all month if they choose.

When the NJ Nets start the upcoming season, their home arena will have changed corporate sponsorship, going from Continental Airlines Arena to… The Izod Center.

I don’t totally disagree with you. I may have overreacted above (#23). However, I would like an explanation as to how this shows “class.” I suppose and argument could be made that it shows bravery (to wear such ugly attire in a widespread media outlet). But class?
I also see how it could not be a cash grab (or money grubbing as I put it) because they were probably not paid as much for their announcing jobs back then as their equals are now. And they were certainly not paid quite as handsomely for their services to Inside Sports in 1980 as they would be now for ESPN or Sports Illustrated. But, you can’t contest that it was a way for them to make some extra money.
I don’t think it degraded them, but it doesn’t show any real “class.”
Rant over. Back to the uniforms. How about LeBron last night? Has anyone ever shunned his fan-base quite as badly as he did by just wearing a hat?

I’m not trying to knock these guys or say that they weren’t “classy” guys. I just don’t think you can say “they were classy” just from a picture in a magazine.

You need to think about the way things were back in 1980 when the thing was written. EVERYONE of those men had class and showed it. For those men to do something so stupid (in 1980) was not a cash grab, it was CLASS
Agreed. If this showed “class” then Rizzuto showed an equal amount of “class” appearing in “link” ads.
I’m not trying to knock these guys or say that they weren’t “classy” guys. I just don’t think you can say “they were classy” just from a picture in a magazine.
According to an item at the very bottom of this article (which I first saw on the Chris Creamer board), the Titans will wear navy jerseys with light-blue pants this Sunday, which means they’ll look like the far-left design shown link.
Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m in the minority, but I love the framing created by the light blue shoulders and pants around the navy body. See also the far right combo, which I think is even better and should become their permanent home combo.
The perfect away look, of course, is the fourth from the left–white jersey with light blue shoulders and pants.
I can’t say for sure, but I’d swear Stuckenschneider had a brief callup with the A’s, though he obviously didn’t get into a game.
I could be wrong. I know he was a Rule 5 guy for the A’s so it doesn’t seem likely, and I know he almost made the team out of spring training. Maybe this is from the late spring Bay BRidge Series where they and the Giants start wearing their regular unis.

The Flames’ link looks link. The clashing colors scream out “temporary”, but it’ll be there all season. I can’t get my head around it yet.
The link look like they forgot to change out of their link. Terrible.
The Flyers, since the end of the preseason, have moved their link off the seams and up close to the collar. The Avalanche have left theirs link, as has link.
The Panthers look decent on TV because the camera angle draws the viewer’s attention link.

another thing about Lebron, just b/c he plays basketball in cleveland and has lived around here his whole life doesn’t mean hes an Indians fan. he shouldn’t have to change his favorite baseball team just because he doesn’t play in that city.
im assuming new era sent him a couple boxes of hats in the past.
he just pulled one out id guess.
Local sports radio had a slow day awhile back and they were discussing the most bizarre sports deaths. Someone called in and said Terry Sawchuk accidentally suffered a lacerated liver from BBQ tongs.
From what I see online, nobody really knows what happened. He was involved in some sort of fight or horseplay with teammate Ron Stewart and suffered a lacerated liver. They were possibly drunk. Some accounts online said Sawchuk blamed Stewart, some say he forgave him. He actually died of a blot clot caused by the wound.
The link jersey looks authentic to me, but not game worn or even game issued since there is no set tagging anywhere on the jersey that’s visible. I forget if the A’s were a team that tucked the set tags on the inside of the jersey where it wouldn’t be seen, but there doesn’t look like there are any stitch marks on the front to prove that. Guess I need to check my Unis of the Double Knit Era to be sure (One of the best buys of the summer for me, by the way. Thanks for that heads up Paul!).

in lebron’s case, he is a celebrity, savior of the citys basketball franchise, and for all intents and purposes, a townie. his multi million dollar salary is paid for in part by clevelanders, many of whom are indian fans as well.
now, he has no obligation to the indians as a franchise, but most of his “constituents” are tribe fans and it would have been a better gesture to humor them by not wearing any team gear.

I was at the game and about two sections away from Lebron. I agree with your comments. It’s his decision. You don’t have to be a homer, just ’cause you lived your whole life in a city. That said, it is bad form, from a PR standpoint. Everybody remembers growing up with that guy who roots for the other team. Sometimes he’s a contrarian. Sometimes he’s a “frontrunner” (a term I had never heard until very recently, but which fits this situation) Here’s a clue, LeBron: don’t be “that guy”. Nobody likes “that guy”.

Now, I get that companies have style guidelines for their trademarks, and they specify, among other things, what colors can be used. But since they’re paint company, the logo is more likely to show up on different color backdrops, so you’d think they have guidelines how to make sure the logo doesn’t look fugly on gold on black.
AIG makes it work with Man U’s uniform even though its logo has a rectangular frame, and Samsung makes it work with Chelsea even though its logo is has an oval base. So surely Glidden can come up with a variation that works without making it look slapped on.

Hockey players don’t change breezers often so that’s why the old scheild still shows up. I remember a few years back a story about Old Man Chelios still wearing his Breezer girdle from his time at the U of Wisconsin. He simply wears a team colored shell over it. Breezers don’t wear out as fast as gloves or skates and the technology really doesn’t change either so that’s why I bet if you look real hard you might even find a player with the old orange scheild on his breezers.
As far as sock tape, I know some guys who use skate laces instead of tape during practice as it holdes tighter and better.

Crosby, a Reebok endorser, described to a company exec “how the water-resistant jerseys trap perspiration, which pools in players’ gloves and skates.” Crosby: “They’ve come up with a resolution for that. … They want to make sure that the product is the best it can be. It’s nice that they will listen to feedback from the players.” NHL and Reebok officials could not be reached for comment, and it is unclear what changes were made or “whether the new version of the sweaters will be available to the Penguins in their season opener” Friday against the Hurricanes.

The other day someone mentioned that my alma mater (St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin) has recently updated their Green Knight logo. I have recently discovered their Identity guide online. I think they look good. I especially like the secondary images. I think I like the old shield image better but the new one is not bad by any means.
By the way, is my assupmtion that the “Green Knights” are inspired by the 14th century poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, correct?
From SNC.edu
“The change in nicknames for St. Norbert athletic teams came about gradually, mainly though the influence of the Rev. Louis A.V. De Cleene, O.Praem., a classmate of President Eisenhower at the Military Academy in West Point.
Father De Cleene enjoyed recollecting his days at West Point, where the football team was known as the “Black Knights.” He was able to persuade people at St. Norbert to adopt the Green Knight nickname for the school teams, which had been known as the Green Juggernaut, the Green and Gold Wave, the Green Wave and the Goldmen.”

We all know what Nike and Rbk have done to our favorite uniforms recently. Just imaging for a while what Izod might cook up – probably similar to today’s article, don’t you think?
Does any one else find it to be TOTALLY STUPID to rename an arena that will be empty after this year?
The Nets will be playing there for at least 2 years, and maybe 3 if the construction of The Barclays Center doesn’t stick to schedule. The arena will still continue to be used for concerts and entertainment (like High School Musical sings Rage Against the Machine… on ice) as part of the new Xanadu complex.
Continental was allowed to back out of their naming deal when the Devils left. I was surprised to read that three clothing brands were bidding for the name: Izod, Rocawear and Southpole. Izod’s winning bid was about $1.5MM/yr.
The sponsorship is also tied into the Xanadu complex. Izod’s parent company will have 5 or 6 stores at Xanadu, and Izod will outfit all arena employees out of their pocket.
Too bad Jay-Z didn’t win, and it could have been called Rocafella Center…

Rugby: Grey versus white showdown looms in Cardiff
The latest twist in the jersey debacle could see neither France nor the All Blacks wear their first-choice strip.
CARDIFF – France have backed down in the battle over playing strips ahead of tomorrow’s rugby World Cup quarterfinal against New Zealand, saying they are prepared to wear a white strip if necessary.
The drawn out saga over who wears what in tomorrow’s match at Millennium Stadium crystallised today when France told the International Rugby Board (IRB) they would compromise on their deep dark blue outfit as long as the All Blacks still wore their alternate grey strip.
The two most likely scenarios are that France will keep their blue jersey and wear white shorts and socks, or that they will wear an all-white outfit which was to be sent from Paris this morning (NZ time).
It could lead to the farcical sight of neither team wearing their first-choice strip – with a New Zealand team dressed in grey playing a French side in all white.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry again side-stepped the issue today, saying it was irrelevant to him and the players.
“As far as we know, we’re going to be wearing silver,” he said.

I remember Sport Magazine in the early 80’s did a great piece on professional uniforms. I saved that issue for years (don’t know where it is now), and would reread it occasionally. The only things I remeber from the article is his tastes seemed to be similar to mine. He also brought up some interesting trivial items such as the St Louis Blues being the only team to wear all three primary colors (growing up in NC with no cable TV I had never seen the Blues uniforms) and that no team who wears red, white and blue had ever won a Super Bowl (does it count since the Pats are now wearing silver instead of white?). He also thought that the Philadelphia Eagles green (from the Vermeil era)made him think he needed to adjust the color on his set. This article confirmed to me that my fascination with sports uniforms wasn’t that weird after all.

Inside Sports was originally published by the Washington Post to compete with Sports Illustrated the same way their Newsweek competes with Time. As Caknuck noted in #138, they made a serious effort to attract top writers, and the tone was much sharper than what SI or Sport was doing at the time, but they never quite succeeded financially. Eventually, the Post sold the name, and IS was published as an undistinguished sports magazine for its last couple years.

In this climate, if you hadn’t built up a huge circ before the internet came along, it’s just damn near impossible for a national print magazine, especially a sports magazine, to make it without the backing of a real major like Time or Conde Naste. Even then, it’s a pretty dicey market.
I’m kinda surprised The Sporting News has arrived, but they’ve adapted by going heavy on the internet, especially with the fantasy stuff.

Wikipedia says The National was published in 1990-91, so it was just ahead of the ‘Net. They put together a pretty good roster of writers, and they would have been the website that Sportsline/Yahoo/ESPN/etc. are trying to be, but the timing and newspaper production/distribution issues killed them.

Around PA, some players wear the cage-goggles. There have been plenty of cases on what are essentially “face-offs” where a player has had the ball fired upward into their face at point blank range. And unlike lacrosse, that ball is a rock. Eye-socket fractures.
Sport actually published two of my letters; the first one was when I was 13 or 14 — I remember it was about how arrogant Jim Kelly was — and the second was about 16 — where I was incredulous that Lawrence Taylor rehabbed by playing golf. I still consider those letters my first published work, though (you just won’t see them on my website)…
