Last season, Cal busted out the yellow jerseys against Oregon in Berkeley. The game is in Eugene this year (home of the swoosh) and I am anticipating it to be perhaps the ugliest Nike-world uniform matchup in history.
We’ll see ya on November 3, when they play the Bearcats!

bearcats are brutal…guaranteed south florida win
Something tells me Paul is not in a good mood this morning.
Major logo creep
Check out the University of Oregon Marching Band
I’ve always wondered what the hell a Bearcat is. Apparently it is something like a link that lives in trees in Asia.
I don’t think Cincinnati has always known what their mascot link supposed to be.
To their credit, later versions look more like the tree-dwelling animal.
I guess the Mets weren’t helped out by going to the pinstripe look last night.
Here’s a nice shot of Sean Green having a migraine with the old school look.

Tomorrow is the blue and gold ones. Sunday will be the current ones.
Hmmmm…current helmets though??
Watching the Notre Dame/Purdue game on ESPN right now, and it appears Dorien Bryant, #9 for Purdue (the kick returner), has some kind of writing on his helmet, I think on the right side…No one else has anything on their helmets (no pictures, sorry)
Indiana in white shirts and red pants for the first time in about two years. Too bad it’s on Big Ten Network, so no one is able to see it.
Check out what LSU is wearing in their game with Tulane on ESPN2.
WHITE HELMETS?!?!
The most truncated link EVER! Watching the game on ESPN2 right now and they have that same stripe on the back as well.
The white helmets and pants on LSU just don’t look right.
And given that we’ve seen a few teams wearing gold on the road, you could potentially have Oregon wearing green and Cal wearing gold at Eugene. It could get really ugly.
It must be some kind of throwback.
Nothing about it on LSU’s website that I could find.

Thats a joke about the Mets
LSU and Tulane are wearing special jerseys for a Katrina promotion. Jersey’s are being auctioned off after the game.
Oh, is today the LSU white helmet, white pants day, accompanied with purple jerseys with super-short stripe strips? That’s the Katrina benefit jersey.
LSU uniforms are all about hurricane relief. Details were posted here earlier on this site.
Watching the LSU-Tulane game now, and they’re showing a highlight reel of Bob Toledo, Tulane’s coach who was at UCLA. When showing highlights of a UCLA-Oregon game, the Ducks are wearing some actual uniforms that, well, look like football uniforms. Seems like 50 years ago.

Katrina giveback – you can link.
The Bearcats are named after a former student there. They’re named after a person, not the animal. The cheerleading squad gave him the nickname decades ago, while trying to drown out the other team’s cheerleaders. I can’t recall the whole story, but, hey, this is the internets! I’m sure someone knows.

Those LSU stripes make it look like there are quotes around the numbers.
Not quite uni-related but someone please try and argue and say this pic is not of Tom Brady…

The Bearcat story sounds like how Iowa State became the link.
I’ve heard Cal will be sporting their blue “home” unis today in Eugene while the Ducks will be wearing their alternate yellows.

Sadly, I doubt it makes much of a difference. >:

No hogwash at all. Walk into the Lindner Athletic center and they’ve got the memorabilia to prove it.

Why do we have two great unis, Washington and Chicago, up against each other, then we are forced to have to pick between Arizona’s and Minnesota’s over-piped abominations?
I think I read a few months ago that Minnesota was going to wear gold jerseys & gold pants for the Ohio State game. That game is this evening, so we’ll see if that comes to fruition.
Cal in white-on-white. Oregon in black pants, green jerseys with black shoulders. I was anticipating a lot worse.
I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but Paul’s new ESPN article is link.
link (Washington) makes Paul throw up in his mouth, I’d bet. They are breaking about 17 laws of good uniform-making.

Wait…the Jets are bland but the Colts aren’t? Neither team has a third color, both have over-the-shoulder UCLA stripes, white helmets, standard numerals, TV numbers on the sleeves, flanking stripes on the pants… The only difference, really, is that the Jets have opposite-color sleeves and flanking stripes on the helmet instead of the single stripe; other than that, the helmet decals which are purely a matter of taste, and the base color (green instead of blue), they’re practically the exact same uniform.
The Colts’ logo is like the Yankees–a classic that needs no updating. The jets logo looks very boring–the word Jets superimposed over NY. I suppose some diehards like them because Joe Namath wore them, but I liked the eighties look (the word jets slanted to have an aeronautical feel) much better. Besides, the shoulders on the sixties jets jerseys looks way too cluttered.
I think they would look better if they moved the stripes further down, and had a bit less of the opposite color on the sleeve. One way to do this would be to reverse the stripe sequence of the inserts, i.e., a green-white-green insert on the green jersey and vice-versa. If you look at the uniform from ’98, the shoulder stripes were a bit farther apart, more diagonal than vertical as they are now.
I’m sorry, but I can’t see how the Jets logo is “boring” next to the Colts’, and not “classic” like same. It incorporates three different elements (the “NY,” the “JETS,” and the little football) quite nicely, I think. I prefer the original football-shaped version (a fourth element) from the Namath years, but this is much preferable to the slanted, modernistic “JETS” they wore from ’78-97. That wasn’t so much a logo as it was the name of the team emblazoned on the side of the helmet, a design treatment I’ve never really liked no matter how it’s rendered.

They’re not brutal, but probably won’t finish higher than third to fifth in the Big East, which is stacked again. The way Louisville is playing, they may fall out of the top echelon, for this year anyway.
If I had to guess, I would say the standings will finish like this: USF, WVU, Rutgers, U of L, then Cincy.

Because of how they played last night in the pinstripes, and how they played today (13-0 win, one-hitter by Maine) in the snow whites, don’t expect to see the pinstripes anytime soon, if they find some way to get in.
The Allstate nets made sense to me, I think it’s kinda neat to see that the ball will be “In Good Hands”. But American Family would just be a cheesy knockoff.

I’m going to have to agree. link vs link? The word “Jets” in italics is not a logo; it’s the word “Jets” in italics. Having to describe it and the little plane above the wordmark as “aeronautical” is more of a condemnation than a support. The current logo is more of an actual design, not just some wonky looking script. Especially when you compare it to what the link. Weak at best.
The other link for the old Jets logo doesn’t work. it looks like link.

Here’s one I have yet to figure out, on some of the Purdue football helmets, on the back to the left of the stripe, there is a small shield with what appears to be “SA” in it. I also believe at one time certain players had this patch on their uniforms as well. Any clues?

Happens all the time in NY on their networks. YES and SNY always employ former Yankees/Mets to go along with their play-by-play guys. On national schedules, they give their best announcers their best games, and the rest fill in accordingly. They have A-teams and B-Teams. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, who I am convinced hate the Giants, have called the last two Giants games. Not because they’re Giant haters or supporters, but because those Giant games probably got one of the best ratings nationally and you have your #1 broadcast team do a game with that big an audience. Like McCarver doing the Phils today. Fox’s best baseball analyst on their most important game. The only reason Buck isn’t there is probably because he’s trying to find something else wrong with the Giants.

I really enjoy this site, and think Paul does a great job. But.. Does anyone else think the ads are getting out of hand? With this newest one, there are now 7 ad locations on the site. It’s not just that there are 7, it’s how it takes away from the site. Instead of the nice looking UniWatch logo at the top of the page, there are two levels of ads. It just doesn’t look right. I know Paul wants to make money from the site, but after the membership program which is netting him so nice cash you would think he’d maybe take an ad away, not add more. I know this post won’t do anything about it, but it’s just annoying me.
As you can see, Cal has a lot of link. On the kickoff a few minutes ago, a #14 made the tackle, but it was really Jahvid Best, who wears #4.
The announcers said that he slips the #14 jersey on for special teams because the other #4 is also on the field. Never heard of that before.

Couldn’t disagree with you more. With all the issues about logo creep and everything… you’re usually already talking about multi-(B)(M)illion dollar corporations. The Uni Watch sponsors? If they’re netting anything near that… sure. I think that’s problematic. But, it seems like they’re smaller-type businesses trying to survive within a economic field in which they’re at a severe disadvantage. Mr. Lukas’ criteria for advertisements: don’t interrupt any text (Jersey Joe’s doesn’t) and no purple allowed (check). Pretty reasonable, and it’s not a random company, but something subject-appropriate, so no offense taken on my part. I am concerned that if every ad is placed at the top, then I’ll have to scroll down just to see “Uni Watch.” That is when I think some re-arranging would be in order.
Watching the Cal-Oregon Game and they cut to a Cal player on the sideline getting some help with his jersey wearing #14. The equipment manager grabbed his jersey and pulled it off, and underneath was a #4 jersey with the name “best” on the back, anyone else catch this?

Otherwise, I like the numeral font.
Obviously Kris McInnis is watching the Auburn game. For some reason, Quentin Groves’ name plate is deformed. It says ‘Q. GROVES’ but oddly, the Q and the period are slimmer than his last name. Looks kind of like this: Q. GROVES
Cal has been especially cognizant of the duplicate numbers thing since they got penalized for having two guys with the same number on the field in their season opener.
With all of Notre Dame’s problems, at least they seem to be playing USC pretty tough early. . . . What do you mean that’s not Notre Dame? Either way, at least Washington and USC are looking sharp out there to offset the goings-on in Oregon and Minnesota.
Auburn looks fairly good in its road whites, as usual. Why is it that Under Armour couldn’t do as good a job with South Carolina’s uniforms as it did with Auburn’s?

I think the decal makes reference to the link that apparently shared a national title.
“Your eyes weren’t deceiving you if you thought the Rangers’ jerseys tonight looked a bit more like the traditional, looser-fitting ones we all knew and loved. Many Rangers asked for much bigger sizes of the new tops. While that defeats the purpose of the form fit that the NHL supposedly is seeking, I’ve yet to hear a good reason why anybody would want hockey players to look like football players (or, worse, like video hockey players) in the first place”

Love the quote!
BTW, notice the “Minnesota” on the front of the jersey. Word is Tim Brewster was planning to add “Minnesota” to the jerseys in a couple years, but apparently has to wait until Nike “allows” him to. I’m guessing no such wait applies for alternate jerseys, especially since this is the Gophers’ first alternate, so Brewster was able to add “Minnesota” to that jersey this year. Consider tonight’s text addition a preview of the future Gophers uniform.

To make that a bit more clear, Brewster apparently wanted to add “Minnesota” to all the jerseys immediately, but had to wait due to Nike. In a couple years the regular home & road jerseys (the maroon & white ones) will likely be sporting the text, probably just in time for the move to the new stadium.

That’s what I figured once I heard them talking about the throwbacks, but I wasn’t sure if it was for something else.

I know, I know… link. I didn’t really know a fair way to do it without influencing the outcome myself. However, there can be only one winner, so it shouldn’t matter. Plus, it’s not like this is some kind of statistically significant study!

Oops, link link.
Those yellow unis have to make it incredbily easy for the OSU players to know exactly where they are.
Man, I love YouTube. Check out link of a 1976 NCAA men’s basketball tournament game between Cincinnati and Notre Dame. Three things of note (besides the nut-hugger shorts):
(1) You could tell it was the 1970s: Even Phog Allen Fieldhouse, a temple of basketball, had a Tartan (non-wood) floor.
(2) Check out the names below the numbers on the back of the Bearcats’ uniforms. Seems only fitting, seeing how the Reds were the first team to do the numbers-above-name thing.
(3) And the thing Paul will love so much: Notre Dame’s uniforms. Green uniforms with stylized font . . . and gold socks with some sweet stripes. To UC’s credit, their socks had some nice stripes as well.

I guarantee Athletic Director Barry Alverez told Coach Bilema to get rid of those red-on-red unis. He said on national TV they looked like a team from the SWAC.
Bielema said during his radio show this past Thursday that the decision was all his. According to Bret, Coach Alvarez had no say in the uniform decision. He wanted the team to look more intimadating when they played Iowa last Saturday. He also said that the red pants are not permantly retired.

NICE sportcoat, Gale. I remember those UC unis, and I remember Gary Yoder..the guys in high school used to call me ‘Yoder’ due to a resemblance. Couldn’t play like him, tho..
I didn’t actually see the game, but appearently the White Sox all wore high socks tonight, probably in honor of Jim Thome (who was honored pregame for his 500th homer)

Once upon a time, the Gophers did wear gold on gold jerseys — that’s how they earned the “Golden Gophers” nickname. I thought back in the day they wore gold helmets too…
Minnesota is honoring the 1967 Big 10 Championship team tonight — but I don’t believe that team wore these jerseys. This is just a Twinkie version of their normal maroon-on-gold jerseys.
From the FSU vs Alabama game…
Recently moved back to TE from OT, #87 Caz Piurowski…Nameplate, mia

Sounds like the first time a team chose to be more intimidating by wearing white instead of color.

No, they wore the all-red against Iowa, and white pants against Michigan State. Red is a color typically associated with aggression, so that makes sense.

Watching the Canucks VS Oilers game on TV
Must say the Oilers look like they have been out fitted with a local sport shop
Watching the Jermain Taylor vs. Kelly Pavlick fght and I notices something very interesting abot their trunks. Taylor has a huge Arkansas Razorbacks logo on the butt of his trunks and Pavlik has his trunks to look like Ohio St.’s pants, complete with the piping down the legs. Both fighters look sharp!

I was at the game against Iowa and the Badgers did indeed wear white pants/red tops under the lights last week. I heard from an inside source that Coach B. was taking a lot of slack from the people of Madison and AD Alverez, and even some of the players finally stepped up and said they didn’t like them. But who knows, they may come back.

Yeah. Motley, the holder’s, nameplate looked like it was completely different material from the other jerseys. It almost looked like it was printed on vinyl or something. Motley was one of the players that shares a number (#20 with Patrick Lee), so it might have been a spare jersey with a name tacked on. Really odd, but maybe understandable considering it’s 5 weeks in and this is the first time they’ve worn road whites. Either way, I could really give a shit what they’re wearing right now. War Eagle!

The Badgers wore the white pants against Iowa. It’s Bielema’s alma mater and was a night game, that’s why he made the change at that time. A lot of people were saying they looked like a high school team with the red on red, that’s why they made the “more intimidating look” in the Big Ten opener against Iowa
I’ve never really thought the combo of red and white was “intimidating” at all. Don’t teams normally go with black uniforms for the intimidation factor?
Pavlik and Taylor show their link link.
