Marseille arrived for their match with Auxerre with only their white and blue jerseys. These were too similar to Auxerre’s home colors, so Marseille was forced to borrow one of Auxerre’s alternates – that wonderful brown and pink number on the right.
In case you couldn’t guess it already, Marseille was so embarrassed by looking like this they ended up losing 2-0. (Pointed out by SQL in yesterday’s comments section.) —Vince
Ypsilanti (MI) High School is looking for a new mascot and logo for their athletic teams. Until last year, they were the Braves. Apparently the Board of Education went PC and decided to drop the name after 73 years of use! The deadline to submit a logo/mascot is Sep 30, here is a link to the story link

I was born and raised in Ypsilanti, and I remember when Eastern Michigan changed from the Hurons to the Eagles. I’m actually surprised that Ypsi High lasted that long, especially when they received criticism during the times when EMU changed.
Does anybody know why Penn State players all wear the same helmet, I know the face masks are the different, but the actual helmet part is the same. I have never seen a college team do this, high school yes, but never college.

That’s an awesome project, but it always saddens me to see so many NFL or NCAA logos used by high school teams. Surely there is at least one creative kid in those schools who can come up with something better than the Buccaneers logo in yellow. And there are probably more high school teams with the Eagles wings than Eagles fans.
I’m sure cost comes into play, but even a blank helmet with the school’s colors shows more pride than some of link.

Why would a team called the Knights have a Colts horseshoe helmet? Kind of a stretch.

A lot of high school programs choose to borrow designs from college and pro teams because of the aura surrounding those teams. If they want their team to have the same winning mindset as the Indianapolis Colts, then you might as well use the same helmet design as the Indianapolis Colts. When I played my HS had the Michigan design (only with blue decals on a white helmet) and jerseys that looked like the old school Cowboys, and our nickname is the Bluejays. Of course, sometimes it’s just a case of proximity, like the Ames Little Cyclones (ISU), Iowa City High Little Hawkeyes (U of Iowa), and Pella Little Dutch (Central College). And does it really surprise anyone that teams in Michigan want to use the imagery of their 2 biggest schools?

As long as the images are being used for non-commercial purposes, it’s OK. Plus, I’m willing to bet that a lot of the images were provided by the schools themselves. It should also be noted that the MHSAA itself uses the images on the site.

yeah, my high school used Ohio State’s colors and fight song. WE WERE THE TIGERS! how the hell do you get red and grey from a tiger? at least are helmets were original, red helmet with a white H on the sides.
My high school ripped off Wyoming’s logo and in our conferrence, we had rip offs of the Falcons, Clemson et al., Green Bay/Georgia, Michigan, and the Giants. I think only one team had an original logo.

I’ve always listed my faves by jersey color, ranking the best white jersey uni combos and the best colored jersey combos. Just because a team is on one list doesn’t mean they’re on the other. I think Texas and Penn State look great in all white but not so much with their colored jerseys. UCLA would be an example the other way–great colors but average in white (although I do like the fact their pants are much closer to their helmet color than my biggest uni complaint, the outright beige Notre Dame pants and gold helmet).

(Part of this post is recycled from yesterday, as it got eaten by the spam filter twice)
Well, today’s the showing of the Eagle’s vintage uniforms, and they looked quite different in the sun than they did indoors. The colors do seem to clash, but I don’t think it is a bad thing for colors to clash on a one-time jersey.
In reference to yesterday’s cricket uniforms:
If that cricket team would have ditched the rump stripes, I think that gradient would have worked quite well.
Speaking of jerseys, there’s this one quite nice shop called “Champs” in my semi-local mall that has a very nice selection of authentic quality (stiched on numbers vs. Screenprint) jerseys. I’d love to snag myself one there, but being both a college student and a gamer, I’d rather not spend a class worth of textbooks or 2+ worth of games on something I can’t wear to work or something I’d be too afraid of getting dirty. That, and I’d rather support a true link

I’m a Flint Southwestern Alum! The reason they have a Horseshoe is this: In 1989 Flint Southwestern High Colts merged with the Flint Academy Eagles and became the Flint Southwestern Academy Knights. In 2004 FSWA dropped the Academy and became just the Southwestern Knights. The new football coach was an FSW alum and decided that since it was Flint Southwestern again, Colts or not, it was time to return to the true roots. So that’s the helmet they wore in the 70’s.
the pats are wearing their silver alternate link jerseys today. I’m a huge Pats fan, but not a fan of the jerseys.
1) they don’t match the helmet
2) they are so close to white it is barely noticeable
3) they are wearing them at home

That’s my highschool football conference, first of all the wolverine helmet isn’t supposed to be a claw it’s just a “winged” design left over from typical leather design.
I have a possible explanation as to why the Arthur Hill Lumberjacks would have a Michigan helmet. Arthur was a lumber tycoon in Saginaw and a UofM grad and regent.
Back in the 1980s and early 90’s all these teams had unique helmets (for instance arthur hill had a spiffy AH logo) it suddenly became the trendy thing to do about 10 years ago.
Using pro logos for school teams isn’t just an American phenomenon. My alma mater, the University of Hertfordshire’s sports teams are nicknamed “The Hurricanes”(link) and use the Carolina Hurricanes’ logo, in green & black.
IIRC, this was either licensed from the NHL or given free of charge. Quite a few universities and colleges in the UK are doing this now.
The winged helmet came from Princeton (the Tigers), and lots of schools have picked it up. The Deleware Blue Hens come to mind.
Also, it’s probably been reported, but Marvin Harrison doesn’t tuck his jersey in. He has the bottom of the jersey elasticized, similar to a cycling jersey. I don’t have screen capture capabilities, but I thought it interesting.
OK, link didn’t work for some reason. Here it is:
One of the schools in my area got the same order from the University of Wisconsin, but I don’t see Michigan cracking down on the use of their helmet design anytime soon, it’s just too widespread.
but I don’t see Michigan cracking down on the use of their helmet design anytime soon, it’s just too widespread.

My school is the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles. Now our helmet logo looks like the Red Wings, but it used to look like the Chicago Bears. “C” for “Christian”
You think the pink stripes on the kits Marseille was wearing were bad. Check out the kits Sevilla wore against Barcelona on Saturday.
No comment needed for these things..
My high school used to use the USC Trojan on the helmets, but more recently have switched to the Michigan design (which looks terrible in purple and silver).
Glad to see that the link look has link.
I read that some of the players in the NHL aren’t liking the new Edge sweaters and have taken to ordering them two sizes bigger than normal to compensate for the snugness.
Still nothing. Just type the URL and we’ll copy-paste from there, if all else fails.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but along with ripping the new NHL jersey’s are causing more problems by repelling the water (as designed) in the players’ gloves & skates (doubt that was planned).
link
Right winger Mark Recchi, for one, understands what the league was trying to accomplish by adopting a sweater that does not absorb fluids, but does not think the designers took into account the moisture — to wit, perspiration — generated under a player’s uniform.
“[The sweaters] don’t soak anything in, which I guess is what they wanted,” Recchi said. “But the problem is, it goes through all of your equipment. It goes into your gloves, goes into your skates.”
And eventually saturates the leather in both, leaving the players feeling as if their hands and feet are immersed in liquid. Perhaps because, at least in some cases, they are.
“They do what they were designed to do, as far as repelling the water,” defenseman Mark Eaton said. “But we’ve found, the last three or four days of wearing them, that, when the water’s repelled, it has nowhere to go but into your skates and gloves.
“By the end of the second [period] or the start of the third, your skates are sloshing around and you have to change your gloves because they’re [soaked].”
Not all players are unhappy with the new equipment system — center Maxime Talbot said he “definitely” prefers the new sweaters because “they’re comfortable, they’re lighter, they stretch” — but that appears to be a minority opinion.

Eagles Throwbacks – a great example of why it’s not always a great idea to recreate designs from when the world was in black and white… One interesting note though, rather than putting team “wildcat” decals on the front Sweatband position the helmets read “Riddell”, but in sky blue, rather than the normal red – don’t know how common that is but I’ve never noticed it before.
I was gonna comment on the international Logo-Borrowing but my compatriot from the ‘canes beat me to it. There are a lot of familiar logos adorning helemts in the UK – the Green Bay/Georgia G is used by both Gateshead (BAFL Premier Div) and the Glasgow (College). When we founded our team, we decided to create an original logo and picked our nickname based on local history rather than any NFL influence. link

NHL players have been doing this for quite some time before the new jerseys came into play. Sidney Crosby does this as the gloves just get soaked throughout the course of a game.
I went to a Pens/Leafs game last year and a lot of Leafs players did this. Basically there is a PVC pipe tree in the locker room that they hang the gloves on with warm air blowing through the pipes.

They don’t. Justin King #1 has been wearing the new model that Toomer of the Giants is wearing. They wear several different models its just tough to notice with the plain white helmet.
They do all wear Schutt helmets it’s a deal the team has with Schutt, to be the exclusive helmet supplier. Most of the team has on the DNA model.
Love the white pants on the Rams today…Reminiscent of the great Rams blue and white uniforms of the late 60s-early 70s.

I may end up being in a minority here, but i LOOOOVE the Redskins’ throwbacks! The gold pants and the gold helmets play off each other perfectly. Plus, the Lombardi “R” logo is so awesome.

Ocho cinco is wearing a white chinstrap, white gloves white armsleves and white shoes.
and a white mouthguard
New Browns punter Gary Player has a single-bar face mask. I believe he had one last year with Arizona, but this is his first week in Cleveland.
Redskins are wearing some throwbacks. I really like them even though its a ton of yellow, it still looks pretty good to me.
I don’t think anyones yet done a British Football Uni page, not sure there’s even a UK Helmet project yet.
As for the websites – they vary a lot, ours isn’t great ‘cos I’m not that good at it and don’t have e lot of time – I’m too busy training, buying the gear, designing the kit, trying to get sponsorship, coaching the O-Line, trying to recover from Surgery, oh, and do a PhD at the same time… I’ll try to find a link that shows our uniform – I never had time to add a gallery. Paul will hate the colour, but hopefully appreciate the socks…
Football in Britain is still pretty minor, some teams can get a few hundred paying fans, but mostly it’s “One man and his dog” type stuff, with most players having to pay out of their own pocket for just about everything.
BTW – the stream I watched the Packers game on has jsut gone to the Skins-Giants game and I like the throwbacks.

He might have his ankles taped under his shoes/over his socks.
My high school’s link. have to go to the northwest tab, and sandusky bay for the conference. don’t ask about some of the color choices. let alone what the unis look like. we’ll just say the monochromatic look is prevalent.
Interesting in the Reggie Brown pic, the player on the right has double socks, but the top pair does not seem to be attached to the pants.
Hoo boy, not only are there two Redskins teams, you have the Akron East Orientals. Surprised the PC police haven’t been all over that one.
OK, I can’t find an open-access photo that clearly shows our Unis, but they’re fairly visible on link before anyone asks, our helemts should be white, but we were loaned a load of black ones, yes, one of our guys is wearing the wrong coloured pants – it’s cos our suppliers had run out of his size and the only ones we could borrow in his size were white. Sharp eyed viewers will probably notice that about three of our players have decals on their helmets while most don’t – ours hadn’t been delivered in time for that game, while some of us play for Senior-League teams as well.
Instead of the blue accents on the shoes that the Seahawks used to have i think they have gone to the neon green accents that you see on the seahawks jerseys and Dion Branch wears

True or false: on special teams, the kicking team is allowed a green dot player like on offense.
It feels soooooo good to see these aftere 6 years of torture. Some pretty sharp AL Central champs attire. GO TRIBE!!!!!

wow, the browns suck again…
like anyone cares, but they’re wearing the striped socks. i thought they banished those, but they look so much better, if only they brought em back for the home unis…

Clinton Portis is wearing white shoes and the rest of the Redskins have on black. The guy just has a desire to be different.
Back in the 60’s and 70’s my high school (Garnet Valley High School, outside of Philly) ripped off the Packers’ “G” logo on their helmets.
They’ve since switched to ripping off Clemson’s paw design….
Oh, and count me in the group that likes the Eagles throwbacks…particularly the socks.
I love how the yellow stripes are actually depressed into the socks themselves…
Not too sure if this has been mentioned yet, but impoverished Taft High School in Cincinnati was set to play Withrow High School last week, but two days before the game, the equipment room was set ablaze, an apparent arson, burning the teams jerseys. Colerain High and Sycamore High offered to pitch in with practice and temporary game jerseys, which they wore for one week. Last week, restaurateur and Investor Jeff Ruby pledged to bring them new jerseys before yesterday’s game with Belmont High (Dayton). Friday, boxes full of 75 jerseys arrived at Taft’s door. Taft won 40-16.

My high school was the Central Cabarrus (NC) Vikings. I can’t find any pics of our current helmets but when I was there it was a profile Viking head. Yellow logo on forest green (Paul’s favorite). I think they switched it to an interlocked CC. In our conference we had a gold on black Spiders (Richmond U), an orange on black interlocked NWC, and a white K on green. Original designs at least.
There was a high school in my conference that had a Mobil oil refinery right behind the school, so they used link and called themselves the Red Raiders.

I totally disagree! I didn’t know the Rams’ white pants EXISTED until I walked into the Ray J today. I’ve never liked the Bucs’ pewter pants, they show the sweat & look gross in hot weather. Speaking of which, it was hotter than f$#@ at kick off today, so both teams were wearing as much white as they could to offset the heat.

I guess the Padres no longer wear the ‘RAK’ on their sleeve for Ray Kroc, eh? I think they wore it for a few years.
I was hoping the Niners would do something along those lines for Bill Walsh.

Two words for you, KO: Jeff Lurie.
Olbermann just got done ranting about the Eagles’ throwbacks…
Nice to see for once that my Tivo was a couple minutes AHEAD of everyone else’s.
I don’t know if I’m right on this or not, but during the Lions/Eagles game today, they showed a quick shot of Calvin Johnson’s back, and I could’ve sworn that one of the N’s was backward. I just turned my heard and saw it really quick, but something at first (and only) glance didn’t look right. Can anybody confirm or deny this?
Clinton Portis is also wearing those new nike soccer cleats to go along with his shin guards.. i think you posted a pic of an LSU player wearing the same shoes a few weeks ago.. dont know the reasoning behind wearing soccer cleats for football.
Those throwbacks looked better on the Eagle cheerleaders than the players! Hubba hubba!
Why are the nose bumpers on the throwback helmets curled up? I noticed it a fair bit in the Washington game, and see it on this linkpic too. They aren’t lying flat on the helmet. Anyone have an idea on this?

They’re usually really lightweight so a player whose position usually depends on speed and agility might feel more comfortable wearing them.
Put me in the camp of liking the Eagles unis today. Hopefully they’ll ditch their crappy black ones & keep those.
Since the 49ers are on the road again this week Mike Nolan wasn’t allowed to wear his suit, but did anyone notice the Bill Walsh memorial on the left shoulder of his pullover jacket? Was he wearing this last week in St. Louis (i missed that game)? Sorry didn’t get a picture.

Given the number of foot injuries it seems like futbolers are getting with these new shoes, I wouldn’t think they would go over well in the NFL.

I’m just glad they don’t use some college or pro team logo.
Firstly, it’s Murrayfield, all one word. Secondly, Scotland’s kit doesn’t actually have grey on it, It’s a white honeycomb pattern printed over the Blue. The fault here is with the NZRFU and Adidas – they didn’t move far enough from their regular colours to avoid their change shirts clashing with the shirts their home shirts clash with… Traditionaly New Zealand change shirts were White, not sure why they changed, probably partly cos they’ve been making their opponents change for the past few years during tour matches etc.
