By Vince Grzegorek
There’s a lot of down time in baseball, whether you’re in the dugout or the bullpen, and ballplayers inevitably find ways to amuse themselves. While this often involves practical jokes among players, there are other times when the hijinks are done to amuse fans as well as teammates.
That’s why I wasn’t surprised when Jeremy Brahm sent me this pic of Hichori Morimoto’s Muitai from the first Japanese All-Star game (here’s another view). What struck me was that the day before, while I was at the Western Reserve Historical Society, Scott Longert had told me a story of former Indian Ron Pruitt wearing a conehead for the National Anthem during a game in the ’80s. If there was a conehead in Cleveland two decades ago, and one far away in Japan today, might there be more to be found?
Of course there were. In fact, the famous 1970s Saturday Night Live skit has provided the impetus for many a ballplayer (and fan) to don the conical headgear. Here’s a partial rundown:
- The most obvious example, of course, are the fans of David Cone who show up to the ballpark with coneheads.
- Former Mariners reliever Bill Caudill used to wear a conehead while sitting in the bullpen during games.
- Former Astros relievers Larry Anderson, Dave Smith, and Charlie Kerfeld (scroll down to “Coneheads”) used to all wear coneheads during games in the 80s while sitting in the bullpen.
- Players and fans of the St. Paul Saints once donned coneheads on Conehead Night (middle of article) inspired by team co-owner Bill Murray (near end of article).
Here’s to hoping that “Mango” doesn’t take off in the same way.
Uni Watch News Ticker: After Jonathan Smith was waived by the Patriots, we finally have the answer to the question, “What number will Randy Moss wear this season?” #81 (thanks to Jeff Israel, who can wear whatever number he wants)… Starting this season, the men’s football and basketball teams of Kansas will have uniforms that have the same official font as the university (Trajan). Other uniforms will be replaced with the correct font as they wear out (a very normal font thanks to Scott Johhnson)… Scott also noted that South Dakota State University will have new Nike football uniforms starting this year… A couple of people mentioned that Temple will have new football uniforms as well this season (check out the photo gallery for the totally bitchin’ helmets)… Joe Bonneau passed on this gallery from The Smoking Gun featuring mugshots of people wearing jerseys and other sports paraphernalia… Reprinted from yesterday’s comments section, “The 10 Most Expensive Sports Collectibles” list on Forbes has some cool uniform and equipment related items… I was at the Fausto vs. Beckett, Indians vs. Red Sox game and was glad to see that Fausto continues to leave the stickers on the underbrim of his hat. … Breaking News!: Despite being listed as merely “Questionable” for today’s blog, Paul Lukas is sufficiently recovered from his vacation to check in with a brief report (see below). Try to act like you remember who he is.
Home Sweet Uni Watch: Thanks, Vince. I’m back, kids, so straighten up and stop shooting spitballs behind the substitute teacher’s back. It was good to get away but it’s even better to be back on terra Brooklyna, so please join me in thanking Vince for minding the store in my absence. Thanks also to Joe Hilseberg, Mark Mihalik, and Eriq Jaffe, whose excellent pinch-hit contributions helped keep things interesting while I was on the road, and to all the great people I met earlier this week in Toronto (full report to follow next week). Bonus thanks to Uni Watch mascots Tucker and Caitlin for the warm welcome upon my return.
Although I stayed true to my goal of not checking out the site even once while I was away, Uni Watch was nonetheless close to my heart for most of the past week. While rummaging through a thrift store in the rural Midwest last Saturday, for example, I came across this poster, featuring a ton of uni-related items, which of course I felt obligated to document. Check it out: There’s an early full-face helmet; an early uniform; Tom Dempsey’s shoe; anniversary patches for the Seahawks, Steelers, Broncos, Lions, AFL and NFL; the Broncos’ vertically striped stirrups; and Bob Griese’s eyeglasses. There was also this Seahawks poster, featuring a good shot of the Native American imagery that the team’s identity is based on.
Scott and I kept processing membership orders while I was away, incidentally. If you haven’t checked out the membership design gallery lately, take a look — there’s some interesting stuff in there, including our first three unnumbered designs (representing the 1928 Detroit Tigers, Augusta National caddies, and Minnesota Twins bat boys). Remember, if you sign up by next Tuesday, you’ll have a “Charter Member” seal added to your card when you renew next year, whoop-whoop.
The most interesting uni-related communiqué I received during my getaway came from an ESPN reader named Joshua Lanning, who pointed me toward this photo and wondered if Denny Mac was wearing a plastic trash bag for an undershirt or what. McLain was frequently photographed doing the windbreaker-as-undershirt thing, but that doesn’t appear to be what he was wearing in that cover shot. Reminds me of that NFL lineman who tried to lose weight during training camp by putting on a rubber suit and then driving around with his car’s heat on full blast — and then passing out. Can’t recall who this was, unfortunately. Little help..?
Getting back to McLain: He was (and apparently still is) a first-class scumbag, but no amount of Mob connections, bad checks, pension-fund raids, or jail time can change the fact that the dude totally knew how to wear stirrups (further evidence here, here, here, here, and here). He was also, of course, a musical genius. Perhaps a pardon is in order?
Jackrabbits: skip the blue pants, stick with the yellow. Seriously.
What’s to like about the new Temple helmets? The pant striping is cool, but the helmets are pretty boring.
Wanted to point out that not a single “uni mug shot” featured Raiders gear. Two Denver Donkeys jerseys and a whole lot of NBA thug jerseys. So much for the Raider stereotype?
The Coneheads was a 1970’s SNL skit, not 1980’s. By 1980, the original cast had left, and we were stuck with Joe Piscopo

everyone’s too embarrassed to be seen in a raiders jersey these days
Also, not a single mug shot of a baseball fan.
Gee, I wonder why the NBA and NFL might think that they have an image problem?
So, with thanks to whoever provided the custom stirrups website, I went and ‘shopped some images as a base idea. I’ve checked the rules, and I think stirrups are legal for fencing. Hopefully I can fund these.
Let me know what you think, Uni Watch.

As the memebership cards get weirder and weirder, I think next year I’m gonna get Jonathan E’s link from the film Rollerball.
Question: How come when others email a tip for the ticker they get credit, but when I email a tip (i.e. Temple getting new uniforms) I get lumped in with “a couple of people”. Oh well, so much for my Uniwatch Membership having any pull at all.

If this sounds like something people would like, send me an e-mail at link. Please put in the subject UNI WATCH.
Since not every person has time today, I’d say I’ll collect information till Wed. of next week then get the list to Paul no later than Friday.

Good one.
I’m suprised nobody has gone with the linkyet.
I used to be a Saint Paul Saints season ticket holder. Moved over to the Wild. I have been to a Saints game at which Bill Murray first coached first base and then coached third base. My seat was along the third base side and we had a great view of his wacky antics.

Actually, I did. the Natural is my favorite movie. However I went with the UniWatch colors (not the biggest fan of the blur and orange combo) and i decided to put the Hobbs name on it as well because I like how the vertically arched lettering looks.

Since we can now get caddie membership cards, can we get one like Steve Williams’ (Tiger’s caddie), where I get to rip off the outer shell and display my Valvoline sponsorship on the 18th green? Once he takes off the caddie vest h is no longer a caddy and therefore his helping Tiger, even if only handing him a putter ot=r tending a flag, should mean that Tiger must forfeit every tournament that Steve did this. Like Steve getting 10% of Tiger’s purses isn’t enough money

A few other possibilities (with varying levels of seriousness):
– as a commenter noted the other day, the football jersey wearers could have all been taken in a Denver area jurisdiction given the identical background for those shots;
– those wearing Raider jerseys weren’t taken alive;
– those wearing Raider jerseys had the Medusa effect on the camera;
– those wearing Raider jerseys skipped the mug shot process entirely; or
– those wearing Raider jerseys were bailed out by Al Davis before a mug shot was taken.
Wasn’t the Mariners’ reliever Bill Caudill? I think I got him in every package of baseball cards from the mid-1970s.

I like the T logo too, but the retro look to those uniforms is really sweet. I think they’re great. A throwback to the Joe Kleko era, Temple’s golden age, such as it was.
The colors and font on those Argos jerseys look great, but what’s with all the little logo patches? They’re shoving the number down on to the guys’ stomachs and it looks really off-balance. Particularly #87 — if his torso were a few inches shorter, the number would tucked into his pants. Ditch those logo patches and you’ve got a great jersey.

A step in the wrong direction for Temple. I saw their previous uniforms in person last year (@ Minnesota), and they were the best college uniforms I have seen in some time.

Once more than one person sends a tip, I (and Paul does too) generally just say “a couple of people”. In fact, after I wrote the ticker last night, 7 more people emailed about the Temple uni’s.
Sorry.

RE: The Simpsons Movie.
Saw it yesterday afternoon and was very pleased. I’d give it a 7.5/10. Don’t want to give any jokes away but the movie starts of really strong, tails off a bit in the middle and picks up again.
For a show that hasnt been consistently funny in many years I was really impressed with what they did.

Nice work, DenverGregg. Many of those possibilities could be very correct. Just remember not to wear your Donkeys jersey at the Oakland Coliseum.

At the risk of repeating myself, I’ll explain my Joe Klecko comment. In the 1970’s Temple went 60-30-2, not a bad record by any stretch of the imagination. In 1977 they went 10-2, and won their only bowl. During the decade they lost to Penn State twice by only one point, and only by 3 in 78 when PSU had an undefeated regular season and played for the National Title.
These new uniforms are very similar to what they wore during that era. It is there way of saying there was a time when Temple football was not a total joke, and that time can come again. That is the reason for the modifications, they have some history, and they are trying to channel it.
Yup, the NBA must be loving all the free publicity from the mugshot gallery.

Joe Drennan – thanks again for doing this! One more category idea: favorite team perhaps? And no one should put “I have 3 favorite teams”. If you can’t decide, use this litmus test: which team winning their respective championship would bring you the most happiness? With that, I have to say the Dodgers win out over the TCU Horned Frogs.

Also, look at the feedback. Not a lot of negative but the last one was about the jersey being a fake.

Is that one of Gywnn’s current sized jerseys?
You can see the new South Africa Springboks Jersey for the World Cup link. It seems to follow the same pattern as Scotland, Ireland and Australia all who are provided by Canterbury of New Zealand. This is almost definitely a fake. I bought a jersey of eBay last year that was a fake. However, I knew it was most likely a fake. At a glance it is very difficult to tell the difference but the details just aren’t as good as the real thing. That being said it is a very good looking jersey for a cheap price, just not authentic. A sure fire way to know is where it’s made. If it’s made in China it is fake. Authentics are made somewhere else, but I can never remember where.

One of the foundational rules of economics though is that a person or vendor or business will always sell something for the highest price that they can get (which is part of the beauty of ebay to sellers). And since this is purported to be an actual jersey, I don’t see what the rush to get rid of it would be unless it has some voodoo curse on it or something.

and for $20 shipping…check where its at. The jersey is coming from the UK
…with the exception that they might be working with the intent to maximize profits in a short period of time. Depending on their supply, they might want to move more jerseys at a lower price in order to capture said max. profit.

New Jersey, of course.
now that paul is back, i figure i might as well ask. i haven’t gotten my card yet, and i just wondered if it was sent out and it hasn’t arrived, or if you guys haven’t sent it yet. thanks guys!
also, i have a bunch of photos from the Hockey Hall of Fame that i just took, with a focus on the sweaters, if you’d like them, i’m slowly-but-surely uploading them to photobucket

Better yet…what is Moss saying to that homeless man in the background? :-)
That’s not a homeless man. That’s Bill Belichick! He has won three Super Bowls. Probably has a nice home.
I was shopping at the Target the other night and noticed the new UpperDeck baseball cards on the shelf. I used to collect hard core, now I just pick up a pack or two to see what the designs look like and hope for a Cub or two.
Designs for UD Series 2? Nothing great…but the photos caught my eye. Series 2 sets usually have shots from spring training that the Series 1 sets (which come out before or near opening day) don’t have. Needless to say the number of shots with the ear tabbed New Era batting practice hats were numerous. Bleh. BP jerseys were pretty common too. Oh well. The Joe Mauer card was nice. He’s sporting his old school Twins batting helmet. There’s a gallery of all the cards on UD’s website.
Attempting…link…now.

All of that crap is shit. Unless of course they’re tailored to fit.
They’re made for big dudes who wear shoulder pads. When worn on regular guys, they just make us look shiny and fat. Remember that dudes. When chicks see us in pro-style jerseys, they think we look shiny and fat.
Shiny and fat.

If you must wear a jersey (and your not playing,) I suggest wearing a youth L or XL. Or get the damn thing tailored.
Also, jerseys in frames look friggin stupid.
Tonight on the evening news out of the Twin Cities, I saw Vikings training camp footage showing the Vikes wearing grey facemasks on their helmets. For what it’s worth, the horn logo looked like the old one (pre-2006), without the shadowing they now have. Are these training camp helmets? Some sort of throwback thing they have planned? did they just go retro with the helmet this year and didn’t really go public with it?

Okay. Jerseys in frames are okay under 2 rules.
1. It’s not an XXXL, with a skinny autograph on the number and a cheesy card in the frame.
2. It has a great story behind it. Like, “I gave Mean Joe Greene a Coke and he drank it and then he threw me that jersey, hanging right there.”
“I bought that bad boy at a sports collectables store. It’s totally authenticated. Idn’t it badass?” is not a good story. Your better off cracking that frame open, going to the tailor, get it fitted and going to the game with it.

You can also sorta make out the 91 Helmet decal that the Pats were wearing in honor of Marquise Hill who died in an off season JetSki accident. (Better Views link, link and link) (as mentioned in item 2 of linkblog entry)
I’ve been busy all day. I saw photos of the Pats camp and signed on to post photos of the 91 decal – hours too late in the UniWatch world.

“No. Wait a minute. You’re Shiny.”
“We can’t all be Shiny.”

nice to see teddy bruschi link though
Jamey Wright of the Rangers has the letters ‘MC’ written in white on the lower left front of his cap tonight. I might have seen something written on the right side too, but I can’t tell because the Rangers FSN broadcast won’t show him from another angle.

Upon closer review, there doesn’t appear to be anything on the right side. I’ve only watched part of the game, but so far I haven’t heard the Rangers broacast guys mention it.
Another Rangers observation, Adam Melhuse appears to be another catcher who wears his batting helmet brim forward under his mask.
Melhuse: link
Couldn’t find a picture of him doing it with the Rangers, but he is in the game right now against the Royals.
Nike has suspended its endorsement contract with noted dog fancier and sometime QB Michael Vick. Not to be outdone, Reebok has halted sales of Vick’s Falcons number 7 jersey. Guess that means the price of Vick stuff goes up on eBay.

pants are the old ones too.
Does anybody know why the Marlins and Giants are wearing (what appears to be) red ribbons on their jerseys?
I didn’t hear the whole thing, but they mentioned it was for “until they find a cure”. My guess is that it’s something to do with AIDS awareness.
Yeah, I went and checked on wikipedia and that’s what it was. Here’s some pictures:

In my basement bar I have jerseys framed that I played in. I have done this from high school, all-star, college, and minor league teams. Everyone that has ever seen the display loves it. I don’t think it is stupid either. I am now a teaher and coach and the players get a lot of drive from seeing the jerseys that their coach use to wear.

You take your players into your basement bar?!
Best coach ever.
The lineman who wore the fat suit to lose weight (well, the one you mentioned) was, I believe, “Big Daddy” Lipscomb of the Baltimore Colts, back in the 1950s or 1960s.
