Houston, We Have No Problem Whatsoever

grounds crew1.jpg

For years, if I’ve needed an old Astros photo, the first place I’ve looked has been Astros Daily, an excellent blog with loads of great images. What I hadn’t realized, however, until reader James Poisso recently pointed it out to me, is that the site includes a page of video links, which provide a priceless historical survey of what is arguably MLB’s most visually interesting franchise. There’s too much material to describe fully, but here are a few highlights:

  • If, like myself, you’ve only seen Colt .45s uniforms in still photos, check out the very first video link on the page, which features lots of footage showing the Colts’ basic uni plus jackets, ushers’ uniforms, and related merch.
  • You probably know that the Astrodome’s roof had to be painted when outfielders couldn’t pick up the ball against the original ceiling design (which in turn led to the development of Astroturf, because the facility’s original grass wilted and died when sunlight could no longer shine through the painted roof). One of the videos actually shows the roof being painted!
  • There’s plenty of footage showing the team’s shooting star design, one of my longtime favorites.
  • As you might imagine, there’s plenty of footage showing the tequila sunrise design, including some good shots of the original bullseye version.
  • According to Dressed to the Nines, the tequila sunrise jerseys were always paired with dark stirrups. But check out this shot of Larry Dierker — he’s definitely wearing orange hose, and they appear to be striped to boot.
  • It’s not clear to me why anyone would need to wear a dugout jacket in an indoor stadium, but maybe they really liked those rainbow stripes.

And there’s a lot more. Recommended viewing.

Membership Announcement: Lots of you have asked if an additional column can be added to the membership roster, indicating the team and era that each card design was patterned after. I didn’t originally think we’d need to include that kind of info, since I figured the card designs would all be based on familiar uniform designs and that their sources would therefore be self-explanatory. But of course it hasn’t worked out that way — we’ve got throwback designs (the one shown above is a 1970 Indians treatment), minor league designs, soccer and cycling designs, etc. So yes, I now see it would be a nice idea to include this information, so everyone can see what a given card design was based on.

But here’s the thing: The roster chart is already pretty big and unwieldy — I don’t want to add another column to it. But if you go to the card design gallery and click on a given card design, you’ll get the Flickr page for that design — and you can add comments to that page. So I hereby invite all members to click on their own card designs and add an explanation for your design inspiration (turns out member Anthony Giaccone already did this several weeks ago). If all goes well, we’ll have all the team-based card pages annotated in short order.

You may have to register with Flickr in order to leave a comment. But it’s easy and free, and Flickr is a cool site that you really ought to be part of anyway, so it’s a win-win.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Scroll down to the end of this Q&A session with a Cardinals beat writer to see what the Redbirds think of the new BP caps (good find by Jordan Hirschfield). … Excellent catch by Avi Berliner, who spotted the following tidbit buried within this Wall Street Journal article: “Alex Marvez, president of the Pro Football Writers Association … winces at the new [NFL] rule requiring photographers to wear red vests with small Canon and Reebok logos. Mr. Marvez calls the idea of using working press members as advertising vehicles ‘really alarming.’ Neither company is paying a specific fee for the vests, but Canon Inc. is an official sponsor of the league (it pays a rights fee to be associated with the NFL) and Reebok International Ltd., owned by Adidas AG, is a league licensee (it makes merchandise with NFL logos, including jerseys, pants and photo vests).” … Always good to hear from Mike from Queens, who notes that USA Softball has some very odd batting helmets (additional views here and here). … Tour de France note from member Mike Edgerly, who writes: “Members of Team CSC are sporting black Live Strong-style wristbands that say ‘Harden the fuck up.'” Details toward the bottom of this page (and I swear, if today’s comments section devolves into a series erection jokes, I’m gonna pull the plug on the site, so don’t even think about it). … It’s well documented that Bob Feller will do anything for a buck, but this seems like a bit much. … “Could there be an uglier uni matchup?” asks Vince, referring to yesterday’s Brazil/Nicaragua contest at the Pan Am Games. … A reader who didn’t give his full name notes that Matt Holliday appeared to have one sleeve shorter than the other last night. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: With the Sharks and Ducks having added orange to their color schemes, Kris McInnis figures it’s time for every NHL team to go orange.

man those brazilians have some crazy uniforms but that baseball one is just… well… its bad.

I’m sure this has been addressed at some point, but David Wright goes with the “pajama bottoms” look for night games, and high socks for day games. I wonder if there’s are other players who wear their uniform differently depending on the time of day.

I noticed that pitcher Josh Towers, from the Blue Jays, pitched last night wearing a single digit number (7). Certainly, this is not his first time in Mantle’s number, but I finally caught it. This is unusual. Uniwatch covered the reasons why pitchers rarely wear single digit numbers years ago. What an inspiration Uniwatch is. Thanks to Uniwatch for being ahead of the curve. Are there any other pitchers in MLB rosters who wear single digit numbers?

I can tell you why jackets were worn in the Astrodome: It was cold in there. It might have been 105 degrees outside, but a person could freeze to death in that place.

    Hi folks.
I need some help for a research paper. I am investigating the evolution and development of football uniforms from a technical aspect, not from a design aspect. I am aware of all of the blog links on the right hand side of the page; I am finding a little difficulty in finding books. Any and all assistance from Uni Watch nation would be greatly appreciated.
Send book titles (with authors’ names, if possible) to link.

In regards to the orange NHL team logos, those don’t look any where near as bad as I thought they would. That Calgary logo actually works pretty well.

According to their website, the Chicago Fire are having a Turn Back The Clock night on Aug. 25. I cant find any info on if they are wearing throwback unis.

Good for the Astros to get some Uni Watch attention. I love that Astrodome history. I guess I take it for granted that I know about all the stuff that Paul and others are just discovering.

Texas A&M’s change from Nike to Adidas was covered awhile back, but according to this article Texas has also gone Adidas. Anyone seen if there will be any uni changes?

I like the Montreal logo with orange.

    Now I feel dirty.

Boy, was it great seeing those Astros baseball cards! I wish every team had a section like that on their websites.

I collected baseball cards back in the early 70’s as a teen, and it was great to see those classy 1971 cards, as well as my favorite set, the gaudy, eyeball-burning 1972.

For Anthony Giaconne – on your flikr comment, you say the following: To hear Bob Shepard announce, “Now batting… Number fifteen… Catcher… Thurman Munson… Number fifteen…” was a tremendous moment for me.

Wouldn’t Bob Sheppard have said something more along the lines of “Now batting…(snip)…Munson” (i.e., without the first name?) I was under the impression that Bob doesn’t use player’s first names in his intros…

Wowsers! Paul, I’m flattered you would do a whole entry on that link I sent you. As for the grounds crew in space suits, I was recently talking with a friend of mine from Houston who told me he actually knew one of the crounds crew when he was a kid and the space suit was “not NASA issue, but modeled after them.” I don’t know the truth of that statement but they do look like linkwith a costume store helmet.

And, once upon a time, he announced an earlier Yankee catcher as “Number Eight… Larry Berra…” Mr. Sheppard later bowed to the obvious, and called him “Yogi”, just like everybody else.

Regarding the “All-orange NHL” idea… I don’t think it looks that bad on the Flames (where it’s actually kind of appropriate), Blues (it’s close enough to the original yellow that it’s not that big of a deal, or – in my opinion – the Kings. In fact I think it makes that crown snap a bit more.

For what it’s worth, the St. Louis Blues link (I know, it’s a B&W photo) featured a “gold” that tended a bit more toward orange than yellow.

I heard long ago that the Astros were the first and only team to be named after their stadium. In other words, the Astrodome was so named first, and the team’s name-change followed. I have never researched whether this is true, but it makes for a good story.

nah, you need the Pirates wearing their awful yellow pinstripes (either top or bottom, matched with the yellow)for the complete retina-burning effect. Precious few things made the Astros ‘Tequilla Sunrise’ uniform look staid, but the Pirates did.

Since I live in Dallas, I read that blurb in the DMN today. I am fairly certain that the only schools that are Adidas in the Big 12 are Nebraska (since 1995), Kansas (switched from Nike a couple years ago), and Texas A&M. I haven’t heard anything about Texas switching from Nike. Texas Tech wears UnderArmor in football, while I think the rest of the Big 12 schools are Nike schools.

Do you have a source for that? I tend not to believe it.

The Mets are not, and have never been, the “New York Metropolitans.” The original corporate name of the organization was “New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.”, but the team name has always been “Mets.”

I also like that you can look at this picture and have no idea who the home team is, since the Astros had essentially the same uniform home and away. I assume, looking at the backstop, this is in the Astrodome, but again, both Three Rivers and the Astrodome had artificial turf, and it’s a little dark…

I never understood having the first initial. If you know the name based on the inital, you can know the name based on the number.

Like someone said earlier, the Astrodome could get quite chilly even in the middle of summer. I used to take a sweatshirt to games, and usually had it on by the 5th or 6th inning.

The Rainbow Guys jerseys are popular because they were the first to really go against the link by using link and looking totally different than the uniforms that were being used and were used before.

Michigan is the other school switching to adidas, not Texas. However, the change will not be taking place until next year I believe. As far as the lowest number a pitcher has worn (at least recently), the Giants traded for a pitcher a few years back at the deadline who asked for the lowest available number and so they gave him number 2.

The Canon blurb is really funny to me (as a photographer) because so many sports photographers are walking Canon billboards, with those huge white lenses that are Canon’s signature. I don’t have any sort of statistics, but I’d be willing to guess most sports photographers favor Canon over Nikon, so having an additional Canon logo shouldn’t be a big deal. Do you have a source for that? I tend not to believe it.

The Mets are not, and have never been, the “New York Metropolitans.” The original corporate name of the organization was “New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.”, but the team name has always been “Mets.”
That has always been a misconception about the Mets being the “New York Metropolitans”. According to the Mets own Media Guide, “the name is Mets… just plain Mets”.

Like Chance pointed out, the team’s corporate name is Metroplitan Baseball Club Inc. According to the Media Guide, original club owner Joan Payson chose Mets as the name for her ballclub because it met five criteria:

    (1) It met public and press acceptance
    (2) It was closely related to the team’s corporate name
    (3) It was descriptive of the Metroploitan area.
    (4) It had a brevity that delighted copy readers everywhere
    (5) It had historical background, referring to the Metropolitans of the 19th century American Association.

Oddly enough, on occasion the Mets broadcasters themselves have called the team “The Metropolitans”, which technically is incorrect.

The Astros were NEVER officially the Astronauts.

Judge Roy Hofheinz, the legendary original owner of the Houston Baseball Club, deliberately named the team the Astros, because “Astronauts” was too long to fit on a newspaper headline. He did not want the club nickname shortened by a copywriter.

They were never the Astronauts. Of course, the copywriters routinely shorten the club nickname to ‘Stros, so Hofheinz’s intention was thwarted, anyway.

As far as the Red Tidal wave…I’m going to cast my lot with the Tampa Bay Bucs. They had that GREAT uni change in the late 90s…that dark red…and seems to me like the trend keyed off of that.

After watching the NFL Network’s “Americas Game” I have decided that 1994 was the beginning of the end for NFL uniforms. They wore the throwbacks and then everyone started to change their design (Bucaneers, Falcons, Lions, Seahawks and more recently the Vikings, Cardinals). The 49ers had some of the sharpest unis out there pre ’94 as well as the Cowboys but now they both just look cheap. Then add in the “half stripes” on the sleeves or shoulders that several teams showcase these days….makes me appreciate classic unis like the Packers and Bears

As far as the Red Tidal wave…I’m going to cast my lot with the Tampa Bay Bucs. They had that GREAT uni change in the late 90s…that dark red…and seems to me like the trend keyed off of that.
Isn’t it ironic that the Sharks kind of started the teal revolution in ’91, now they’re riding the orange wave. Alot like the Diamondbacks in terms of trying to latch onto a hot trend.

Orange, teal and black is just a horrendous color combo. That orange sticks out like the snot-green on the Seahawks unis.

That’s a legitimate point in your first paragraph that I had admittedly not considered.

That being said, the uniforms differ stylistically in that the Astros, in choosing yellow, orange, and red were following the trend in uniform and overall design toward bright and earth tone colors that was seen in the mid 1970s.

    Witness the Padres: link

    and the Pirates: link

So the Astros uniforms were fitting into an overall design aesthetic that was considered fashionable at the time but now is looked upon with amusement or even bewilderment.

The Islanders jerseys, as best as I can tell, were not following any particular design or color trend (though I am not an expert on hockey uniforms like you are, so feel free to pick apart the assertion). I do find them endearing however. Perhaps even moreso since they were around only a brief time.

I won’t pick it apart, Matthew. The discussion is great! :o)

The Islanders did try to incorporate their navy blue, white, and orange colours in their colour scheme, but they added teal. They did pick up on the trend that San Jose started.

John B.: The Fisherman was worn for one season and a bit only. The Isles went back to their traditional logo during the 1996-97 season. They kept the wave pattern on their jerseys until the 1998-99 season, but the Fisherman was retired after only one year and a few months.

Trust me, everything was hideous looking in the ’70s. The uniforms fit right in. Even teams with classy looks (Cubs, Giants, Braves, Indians) jumped on the garish bandwagon.

I loved the Astros in the 70s because of their uniforms.

I loved those late 70s, early 80s Pirates uniforms. But then again, I was only about 8 years old when those things were introduced. And, I still like those unis better than those hideous red vests they tend to wear on Friday nights.
Weren’t all those changes made several years later (with the Buccs being the first?). Hard to attribute that to something that happened in 1994.

Also, as for the mention of teams with the “half-stripes,” I want to give a shout out to the Panthers, who (except for the super huge lineman) manage to get that shoulder stripe all the way around more often than not.

The Astros wore some form of the tequila sunrise somewhere on the uniform from 1975-1993. I was 11 when they switched to the blue and gold color scheme and was excited more because it was something new rather than due to distaste for the old design.

Now I don’t think your assertion is true in it’s entirety. To use another Houston team as an example, most Rockets fans were horrified when the team started wearing these: link

That didn’t stop the team from wearing them for 7 or so seasons though. By the time they dumped those for the current color scheme/uniforms, most people bid good riddance to the purple and blue pinstripe look.

Who knows though, maybe they’ll be considered ‘cool’ and ‘retro’ in another 10 years.

Good point. Though by the time Les Alexander bought the team in 1991 or so, the Rockets had been in Houston for 20+ years. If any change in name was going to happen, it would’ve been when the team moved from San Diego. And now that I’ve searched my memory a little more, I think I recall reading that the San Diego (later Houston) Rockets were originally named because San Diego was a center of atlas or saturn rocket construction for NASA when the team came into being.

I disliked the fisherman sweaters for a few reasons.

    1) The colors of the islanders were Blue/Orange for the color off Nassuau County. I didn’t like the addition of the teal because it was merely going after the “cool” factor.

    2) The original logo was/is perfect, don’t screw with a good thing.

    3) It was just too busy (the same reason I don’t really care for their orange alternates)

I did like the link design they made for it and would not mind if they took out the teal and incorporated it into the current uni’s (because the lighthouse is a very good representation for the Island).

Your argument has a fallacy. We’re comparing uniform popularity, not salary rates between jobs. There’s absolutely no relation there.

My argument is this: if Houston wears those uniforms for one season, and people ridiculed the Astros for their uniform, why did they keep them?

People all over North America ridiculed the Islanders, and they caved to the pressure. Had they kept wearing them, do you not think that more people would have bought the jersey?

Hell, the Barney Rubble Hairpieces/Buffa-Slug jersey was one of the top selling jerseys this season. How many people on this board have one? My guess is not many with the amount of ridicule that we gave it. It was ridiculed on television, on radio, in the newspapers, and yet the Sabres continue to wear them. And people continue to buy them.
That brings up an interesting question that I wish I had the answer to (not being alive yet in the 70s, I am ill equipped to try to answer it anyway). What did people think of the Astros, Pirates, Padres, etc uniforms when they first came out?
Can’t speak for anyone else, but I thought the wild and crazy look was hideous from day 1 (by which I guess I mean the green-and-gold A’s, ca. 1965 or so). But then, I’ve always been conservative when it comes to baseball uniforms (if not politics). I didn’t like pullover jerseys, powder blue roadies, stretch waistbands instead of belts, or any other 70s uniform innovation either. I loved it when teams started going back to the traditional look in the 90s.

With the exception of the Astros and Diamondbacks, that freaking rocks! Go Tech!

OMG! You simply must go to the Astros Daily website, then click on “History” > “Astros Card Gallery” > “1975 – 1987″ > “1981 Tuscon (AAA)” – then be ready to scream (this is your only warning) ;o)

thats not even the worst Toros jersey. Look at the middle of this page for the 1980 version!

Looks like the ’Dome’s bases may originally have been trimmed in orange, too.

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but I respectfully disagree about the bases trimmed in orange. That photo appears to have been taken at an All-Star game, with the bases and the field being decorated, probably in red , white and blue. That looks like Joe Morgan in a Reds uni facing the camera. Astros player is sansabelt, evoking the ’70’s. The field is grass. Judging by the chain link fence, my guess is Atlanta, 1972.

Why do base coaches wear numbers under 60 in baseball? Much was made on the Cubs’ broadcast tonight about Mike Quade giving up his number 18 so that Jason Kendall could wear it. But if bullpen catchers are wearing numbers in the 50s and whatnot, why don’t base coaches do it too?

My theory would be that since a lot of coaches were managers at a lower level or former players, they want to hold onto numbers that they previously wore. Like I said, just a theory.

In the Astros-Nationals game, Washington centerfielder Nook Logan had to stop play after a Chris Burke single because his belt had broken. They immediately threw the broken one in the dugout and handed him a new one, which he put on in the infield.

I agree with the comments above. The A’s logo kills my eyes like dead, and so do the Tigers and Padres, and I don’t care for what happens to the Dodgers and Royals logos, but it’s a tremendous upgrade, IMO, for the Giants, Rockies, and (this might get some angry replies) Mets, and a really nice nod to the past for the White Sox. For everyone other than the above mentioned, it neither improves nor detracts.

At least he’s not supposed to be anchoring your REAL baseball team. I know that Haren has more than compensated for that, but come on.

Just received word that the San Jose Earthquakes will be returning for the 2008 season. No official word on whether they will be keeping the same logos and wordmarks, but smart money is that they will, or they will only make minor adjustments.

And the (nearly baseless) rumor is that Google or Yahoo will be their jersey sponsors.

I just played NCAA 08 from EA Sports and the jerseys look really good! I haven’t looked too closely on a team to team basis, other than Michigan State, but the details seem to be pretty well done. Player patches/equipment logos are clear and the cleats look amazing.

‘Didn’t detract because half of the teams use red and blue, so the changes were minimal. But hell, just the overload of red and blue alone is as bad as making everything black and red. But, with this and the NHL thing too, it’s not really my goal to improve anything; just satirically show what can happen when a fad or a trend get taken to the extreme. So in some respects, I’d rather the logos look worse, yet it seems that some people actually like the changes I make…

The play is from the top of the third in the ’72 All-Star Game. It’s Bobby Murcer’s lineout. You can see Rod Carew off of first, getting doubled off as May makes the catch and touches first with his hand to end the inning. (As he runs off, you can see the scoreboard with “American” and “National” on it. From retrosheet:

“Carew singled to center [Freehan scored]; Murcer lined into a double play (first unassisted) [Carew out at first];”

    CSC joins wristband-wagon
Team CSC has joined the wristband bandwagon this year, but it sports an interesting slogan that isn’t raising money for a charity or some do-good organization.

Instead, the letters across the black plastic wristband underscore the team’s philosophy in this year’s Tour: “Harden the Fuck Up.”

“Stuart (O’Grady) brought them for the team in London and asked everyone to wear them,” said Team CSC rider Frank Schleck. “If it’s tough, we look at the wristband and we do what it says. When it gets hard, you harden up. So far it’s worked pretty good.”

Well, we know now that those bands didn’t help link
