This and Tat

By Vince Grzegorek
While tattoos were once the domain of sailors and ne’er do wells, you’re now likely to see a tattooed bride or altar boy. — Rachel Weingarten

The stigma of tattoos has been mellowed in the last ten to twenty years, especially in the world of sports. Everyone from swimmers to female boxers seem to have a little something inked somewhere on their bodies, and arms, legs, neck, hands, and even faces get decorated on a regular basis. Tattoos in certain places might still be taboo in mainstream society and might be a barrier to employment in certain sectors, but certainly that kind of corporate, buttoned-down mentality wouldn’t apply to our freewheeling athletes, would it?

Actually, it does, because many leagues consider tattoos to be part of the uniform. In fact, in many sports tattoos are covered in collective bargaining agreements, league committees, and official rulebooks. Take Major League Baseball, which, like the Marines, frowns upon “sleeve” tattoos. Justin Miller of the Florida Marlins (the same guy who has “I [heart] Billy Koch” tattooed on his rear end) has been told to wear long sleeves while pitching because his many tattoos could distract the batter. His response: “For me, my left arm shouldn’t even be counted as a distraction. It’s not part of my uniform, it’s part of me.”

Joel Zumaya and Felipe Lopez usually wear at least semi-long sleeves while playing, although it’s not clear whether they do so based on a higher directive from MLB to cover their arm tattoos (Zumaya, Lopez, Lopez again), or because they just enjoy that style.

As with most things in sports, sponsorship, advertising. and money come into the equation as well. Mike Juhasz of the Calgary Stampeders was told by his coach to cover his Nike swoosh tattoo since Nike was a competing sponsor of the league. One has to wonder if something similar would have to be done if this young man ever made it to the NBA. (Incidentally, LeBron James had to cover his tattoos while playing during high school.)

You wouldn’t think tattoos would be a huge deal in the world of auto racing, right? But Kimi Raikkonen took some heat for a tattoo of a little sun he got on his wrist. Nothing much came of it, but the media fixated on the topic, and Ferrari boss Jean Todt finally said that if a sponsor was that upset about the tattoo then they would just change sponsors.

Then there’s the strange world of temporary tattoo advertising, which has grown into the even stranger world of real tattoo advertising — and which, of course, got its start in sports. Bernard Hopkins collected an extra $100,000 paycheck for putting a GoldenPalace.com temporary tattoo on his back during his 2001 bout against Felix Trinidad, and soon the boxing world was up in arms about the prospect of fighters dancing around the squared circle like sweaty billboards. (Temporary tattoos in the ring were eventually banned since they could be a distraction to the judges and because the ink could come off and get in the opponent’s eye.)

Soon, the juggernaut of sports marketing jumped on board and a New York man planned to ambush the NBA with selected players wearing temporary tattoo advertisements during three selected games in 2001. After hearing about the plan, the NBA quickly put an end to the plans while threatening fines and suspensions. Rasheed Wallace also considered wearing a temporary tattoo for a candy company but eventually backed out because he “didn’t want to use his body as a billboard.” I’m sure it had nothing to do with David Stern at all. Really. The league maintains that players are not allowed to wear any stray corporate insignia on any parts of their bodies, which are considered part of the uniform.

One of the few places that temporary tattoo advertising has survived is in beach volleyball, where players can often be seen wearing multiple corporate logos while diving around in the sand. Having concentrated on, um, other aspects of women’s beach volleyball, it didn’t occur to me until lately that they were wearing temporary tattoos on their arms. Having not watched any men’s volleyball, I had to do a quick search just to make sure that they were taking part in the “Body For Sale” trend as well.

I always hated the Golden Palace stuff on boxers. I didn’t know it had been banned. Good to know that there are still some sensible rule makers around.

The morning show on the Dallas sports station went over the SI Top Ten Worst College Uniforms list this morning. It was rather lazy of them to simply read and comment on a list that was so haphazardly put together in the first place.

It makes me crazy that the SI list, which contained no explanation of the selections, is getting this kind of attention.

It wasn’t really a tattoo, but does anybody remember which boxer had Golden Palace ads on the bottom of his shoes so it could be seen when he got knocked out?

I always thought that was more funny than most of the other Golden Palace link.

Excellent work, Vince. And as always, I appreciate it when beach volleyball photos are thrown into the analysis.

Josh Hamilton, the Reds rookie and former drug/alcohol addict, shows off some major tats, including flames going up one of his arms.

Hey, that’s not nice to Vince. Yes, it’s a day off for me, but it’s also a chance for Vince to do his thing. I appreciate that you miss me, but c’mon — Vince does good work too!

I love the Justin Miller “I (heart) Billy Koch” tattoo. If I get out to a Mets-Marlins game this year, I’ll try to ask him about it. haha

Paul, no mention of Golden Palace paying streakers to put temporary tattoos on their bodies?

Can we get bonus points for identifying the person in picture?

I believe I may be able to identify them. I’m not positive, but if it’s a celebrity, I think I’ve got it.

Here’s a link from last year about a cyclist, David Clinger who got a full face tattoo and his team was not at all pleased.

Justin Miller also has I-D-I-O and A-M-O-R on each of his knuckles. (LOVE and HATE for those non-Spanish speaking Uni Watchers)

I’m backing off. I found a pic of who I thought it was, and he clearly has different tats. I thought the “LB” and the dollar sign were clues. Damn.

As far as Felipe Lopez and his long sleeves, I remember reading a profile in the Cincinnati Enquirer last year noting that he wears the long sleeves because he feels showing his ink is disrespectful to the game. Unfortunately, I can’t find a link to the article.

Sometimes it would be nice to have a daily Uni Poll. For instance, today it would be interesting to know what percentage of the readers have tats of their own.

I don’t understand what’s funny about that one.

Joe Corvoe of the Cup losing Sens has a bunch of tats, along with his mohawk. I was playing hockey with him a few summers back when he just got one on ehis stomach, some sun circling his belly button and it casued quite the discussion in the lockerroom as I was the only non NHL player out there (they needed a goalie to shoot at) and just about every one of them had a tat, including me (a small shamrock on my right ankel). Corvo though said he gets them when he has nothing else to do and regrets some of them as they’re “too trendy”

I thought that was odd too when I listened to the uniform segment this morning. I had already read the list, thanks to this blog, so I could follow along easily. But talking about a list of bad unis on the radio doesn’t translate as well, since there’s no visual. There’s no way I could’ve pictured the Delaware uniforms just by listening to the radio.

Count me in the want to but really can’t afford it as far as tats go. Frankly, I’ve been looking to get a very involved piece on my upper left arm, and I wanna get it done right, in full color. But I’m poor, so as a result, I haven’t gotten anything.

After I (maybe) eventually get that piece, I’ll move on, I’ll definitely have a Red Sox ‘B’ logo, maybe a Bruins spoked B, probably a BU Terriers logo of some sort.

Other than those, I prefer classic, pin up style tats. Flames, skulls, sparrows, banners and such, and my favorite tat, which I know I’ll never have the balls to get, is the spider web on the elbow.

As far as athlete tats go, Sheed’s tattoo is a cool looking piece, and although I usually don’t love tribal stuff, I love Kyle Turley’s huge tribal work.

link wears long sleeves specifically to avoid offending people with his numerous tattoos. To my knowledge he doesn’t have anything particularly offensive (besides misspelling Posh’s name in Hindi). Some people are just uptight I guess. I’ll now comment on your other post, Robert. I’m sure most of us here have thought about getting a sports logo tattoo (LA Dodgers cap logo for me) but haven’t gone through with it. Since 1310 The Ticket has already been mentioned today by you, I’ll point out that midday host Bob Sturm has a link on his arm that he got done on the show.

Anybody here have pics of their sports tattoos, if they have them? A good reason I don’t is that I already have a tattoo in memory of my sister, and I think any other tat would cheapen the importance of the one I already have.

And WVU Tom, I got your sarcastic joke about the Detroit D. I know you’re a regular contributor, but I can’t tell if the follow-up posters to your sarcasm realize it.

Hmmm, the Anaheim Ducks just won the cup with their new uniforms.
The Denver Broncos won two Super Bowls in their first two years with those navy jerseys with the orange accents.
The Anaheim Angels won the World Series shortly after switching away from the cartoonish uniforms and to the red hats.link

Long-time reader, but this is my first post (and this is only really tangentally about uniforms, but if anyone would get a kick out it this, I’m sure the readers here would).

I work from home, so during lunch, I tend to try and find something to watch on TV to break up the monotony of looking at a computer. (Daytime television is terrible by the way.)

So I flip on ESPN Classic, and they’re showing a bowling tournament from 1993 which I watch for a few minutes. One of the bowlers was Walter Ray Williams (who I guess is pretty good, because the announcers were fawning over him), and he was sporting a full beard. The play-by-play guy commented on this and said, “Williams grew his beard out after the PBA relaxed their rule for facial hair before the start of this season.”

So, while you could wear terrible polo shirts and polyester pants all you wanted, you couldn’t have a beard on tour until 1993.

I’d like to comment about the green Notre Dame jersey. Yes, it’s a little odd. I’m not sure I think of Notre Dame as a green-wearing school. But that green jersey has history. It was designed as the “special occasion” and “anti-confusion” jersey for the Notre Dame/US Naval Academy game (and other occasions) way back in the 30’s.
While I think their navy jerseys are Notre Dame’s best of the three, the green jersey is a great alternate jersey, especially if it could conjure up some “Luck o’ the Irish.”

I feel like most teams change something minor about their uniform each year. So if you look at almost any winner you could find something they changed. Look at how many times the Devil Rays have changed their uniforms and got nothing out of it.

For the record, I check in here every day, though I may not sift through the 150-250 comments posted here.

I appreciate everyone in this community who keeps such a watchful eye on the Uni-world, but I don’t appreciate readers who call out others in that way.

The Florida Marlins have double-luck with new uniforms: 1997 was the death of the teal hats, and a World Series, and 2003 featured the script-ish FLORIDA on the road uniforms, as opposed to the block, radial arched lettering, and another World Series. link
The Cavaliers’ new uniforms came just in time for LeBron, does that count?
That’s all I can think of right now, but there are numerous examples. To close, I recall an ESPN commercial that featured designers pitching new Buffalo Bills uniforms so they could win a Super Bowl, just like the Broncos.
The Baltimor Ravens changed their uniforms in 1999 becuase they supposdly stole original design from a security guard’s drawing. but any way they one the super bowl in 2000 in only the second year of those uni’s

I realize I’m edging into “old fart”-dom with this comment, but I just don’t “get” tats. Having somebody stick ink-filled needles into my body to put some decoration on it just doesn’t appeal to me at all… while I wear clothing supporting my favorite teams (Cardinals, Blues, Mizzou, and Arkansas State) all the time, I’ve never considered having the link or the link inked onto my skin for all time! (Whatever you do with your skin is your business, IMO…)

Baseball’s “no sleeve tat” rules only apply to pitchers… they’re not allowed to have anything “distracting” on their pitching arms. That rule also reduced the use of those horrible “dot-matrix” undershirts; pitchers couldn’t use ’em!

I think this is the 5th or 6th time (since I originally posted it 48 hrs ago) that someone is mentioning (and assuming they’re the first to bring it up) the Top 10 Worst College Football Uniforms List…….

I almost sort of feel like it’s a joke now. We’ll see if it continues later today and tomorrow…….

I’ve noticed that the “Dressed to the Nines” database is flawed in that more recent years don’t include alternate jerseys or caps.

(I’m going to duck now so no one will tear my head off for missing this point, which I’m sure was in comment no. 178 five months ago.)

I was playing around today looking at the “Dressed to the Nines” website. I took a look at the timeline. Look at link , not sure how many people here would think that was “ingenious”

My friend always talked about getting the 3 colors (yellow, red, blue) of the Steelers logo tattooed on his heart, but it never happened yet.

He also mentioned getting a Pirates “P” tattooed on him. I talked him out of that, thankfully. That team is like a AAAA team. Although, I’d love to see them smack around Clemens on Saturday!

    Here’s the short version:
    10. Not Top 10, maybe Top 15-20
    9. Not even close
    8. Again maybe Top 15-20
    7. Good looking just how they are (orange &
    whites that is)
    6. Get rid of the giant white side panel & then
    I’ll lean towards great
    5. But it’s not horrible either
    4. I like it how it is…kinda old school…maybe
a lighter orange would make it better
    3. Agreed
    2. Get rid of the yellow pants…have yellow be
an accent on white pants and on the sleeves
    1. No comment needed

    Some additions would be:

    Portland St.

I agree, going through 150-250 comments is tiresome, and I do my fair share of skipping through the comments on occasion, but when it’s happened multiple times in the same thread when (at the time) it hasn’t even reached 60 comments just doesn’t make any sense.

That article about Raikkonen’s tat is strangely outdated. He’s had that as far back as 2004 or 2005 if I remember correctly, long before he was a Ferrari driver. Even the picture of him is from 2006 in a McLaren uniform. The sun was by no means a new addition to his arm when he arrived in Malaysia this year.

Consequently, regardless of what the Air Force uni looks like it deserves respect from SI.

What many people may not realize is that while you are writing a comment, it is likely that 5-10 comments are being posted at the same time. There’s no need to complain, if someone posts something that has already been posted, just ignore it, or nicely point out that it has already been posted. There’s enough bad people out there in the real world that don’t get along, theres no reason that we can’t get along on a message board. And I’m not saying that I am perfect in that regard, but everyone can stand to be a little more patient sometimes.

I apologize–I wasn’t trying to be rude or “call anyone out”. I was just trying to make a light hearted joke that would hopefully make a few of the “regulars” here chuckle.

Having said that, I do feel that is the responsibility of every visitor, new or veteran, to check when posting that the topic they wish is discuss hasn’t already been brought up that day. (I’m not refering to this site specifically either, but any blog or forum site). That’s just the way I feel.

Todd K, thanks for your comments. The last thing I want to do is turn off someone new. I’m not new to this community — I was just standing up for those that are.

I get annoyed, too, by repetitive posts (as well as posts on topics I’m not interested in), but I just choose to ignore them.

Smacking down someone who posted something redundant might drive them away, but what it won’t deter the next new person from posting about the San Diego Charges’ new powder blue-trimmed uniforms, for instance.

Jason, no offense taken. I would theorize that if two people post the same thing within minutes of each other that they were not being inattentive to the thread but merely composing their posts at the same time and one clicked the “Say It!” button first.

Can’t say I agree with these, but SI.com has a photo gallery of the top 10 ugliest current college football uniforms:

Cripes, The Air Force uni should get a pass from this SI list for their helmet bolt design alone–hands down one of the best, most recognizable, and envied. Moreover (and setting aside aesthetics), the USAFA players (as well as, I must admit, their counterparts at West Point and Annapolis) are truly remarkable young men who embody more than the student-athlete ideal: They selflessly commit to serving our nation. Consequently, regardless of what the Air Force uni looks like it deserves respect from SI.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who was put off by Air Force’s inclusion in that list. Seems like the service academies should get a free pass for stuff like this.
Why?

The guy said the uniforms were ugly, and by all objective standars they are (with the exception of the helmet, not that they are acting in concert with Al Qaeda to bring abuot the fall of western civilization.

Wow. Excellent article, Vince. It’s about time tats got some love.

I don’t have any sports-related tats because I prefer my tats to have symbolic meaning. I am not attached to any team enough to have a logo tattooed on me. I have four, by the way, and I am by no means cool.

As for the repetitive posts, I didn’t think anybody was being mean about it. WVU Tom pointed it out in a funny, subtle way (so subtle, most people didn’t pick up on it), and other people have valid points and good tips as well.

Oh, Vince, thanks for posting male volleyball players as well as female ones. It is much appreciated.

No one has mentioned Hank Blalock of the Texas Rangers who has a word tattooed up the side of his right forearm (can’t remember if he has anything on the left forearm). I couldn’t find any pictures to illustrate this. The tattoo is fairly difficult to show anyway during a game because Blalock covers most of it by wearing large wrist bands on both arms.

The Rangers actually had a local cable commercial making light of this a couple of years ago when Blalock took a temporary butterfly tattoo that Mark Teixieria was considering putting on himself. I’d look for the commercial, which was pretty hysterical, but I know there’s no way I’d find it.

Is there some chemical in brats that causes the eater to want to wear oversized foam objects on their heads ? Just wondering. It seems prevelant particularly to denizens of Wisconsin. Funny. I’m having trouble picturing Boston/New York/Chicago fans wearing such cartoonish hats.
Plus my 86 year old father is from Milwaukee and I’m having hard time picturing him in one of those hats.

Went to the Dbaacks – Giants game last night, and made a couple observations

    1. The Dbaacks uniforms are worse than I thought. Even when they are buttoned up properly, the slightest movement mis-aligns the top of the “a” across the placket. The left side (top) “a” inevitably rides higher that the right side. As each batter comes to the plate, the Jumbotron showed a body shot from the waist up, and EVERY player had this problem while standing still! I was able to point this atrocity out to several Dbaacks fans in the vinicinty who hadn’t ever noticed it.

    2. The “Dbacks” logo itself is quite large on the jersey itself, and shrinking it just slightly would allow the logo to be split cleanly at Dba cks, or increasing the size of the capital D while slightly shrinking the other letters it would split nicely at Db acks

As in many other areas, the new Ownership just doesn’t “get it”. 24,000 for a game against what could be argued as your #1 divisional rival is not good (Wednesday night or not). Several years ago, the Giants in town mid week would draw 30 to 35,000 minimum.

    – oh yeah, Giants Dan Ortmeier is still without his left sleeve patch, which is stupid since that patch has been standard on the Giants road uni for a couple of years, I beleive. It was on a blank Authentic jersey in the Dbaacks Team Shop.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won back-to-back Cups in ’91 and ’92, changed uniforms for ’92-’93 to cash in, and haven’t been back to the Cup Finals ever since.
Other teams I can think of who changed jerseys after winning a title include the 94-95 Houston Rockets, 1999 Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams, 1979 Pirates (white home jersey in 1980) and 1986 Mets (new road uni in 87) None of those teams have won a championship since. Anyone know of any others?
Went to the Dbaacks – Giants game last night, and made a couple observations

    1. The Dbaacks uniforms are worse than I thought. Even when they are buttoned up properly, the slightest movement mis-aligns the top of the “a” across the placket. The left side (top) “a” inevitably rides higher that the right side. As each batter comes to the plate, the Jumbotron showed a body shot from the waist up, and EVERY player had this problem while standing still! I was able to point this atrocity out to several Dbaacks fans in the vinicinty who hadn’t ever noticed it.
All more the reason to bring back pullovers. Broken-up scripts drive me crazy.

Thanks to all those who like my posts.

Broker you should definitely do the surgery, it’s not that complicated. The web directions actually make it appear more complicated than it is/should be. The key is getting rid of the black wirey stuff, they are the culprit in “stovepipe hat” effect.

The first time I did the surgery, I had just had it explained to me kind of like this: Be careful on the first cut so you dont ruin the hat, separate the white threads from the black wires and start pulling.

Only after doing it did I realize that the white threads are basically only interwoven in the black wires, and that you need to run your fingers around the edges for missed black wires . . .

So go for it, it’s easy!

Is it necessary that the white threads and strap come out? I’ve got a new 59/50 and definitely don’t like the stovepipe look but would like to keep my hat in the best condition I can. I also paid too much money for the thing to start completely gutting it.

P.S. And as a person who writes headlines for a living, I don’t think it was that good.

I recently stumbled across link of the 1896 Virginia Tech football team. It interests me for several reasons:

    * 1896 is the year that the school changed its name from Virginia Ag. & Mech. College to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (hence the “VP” logos and the likely source of the “AM” visible in the background).

    * 1896 is also the first year that the infamous orange & maroon was adopted, but the team appears to be wearing the original black and grey school colors. So they updated the logo (“VP”), but not the color scheme.

    * Neat hoop socks.

    * I could be wrong, but those vertically striped leggings look like some kind of shin protectors. One of the guys seated in the front row appears to be holding a shin guard on his lap.

So I’m assuming you are an editor?

    a few things:

most people in the real world realize that if you are going to get a tattoo below their elbow, they may have to wear long sleeves in certain situations. And if you dont have a cool boss, you may have to wear them to work for the rest of your life. You would think athletes would take this into consideration.

Also, I hate that athletes (and other famous people, most notably Angelina Jolie) have tons of money but get the worst tattoos known to man. For the most part they are so poorly done, they look like prison tattoos. I know there are tattoo artists I want to get tattoos by because of the quality work they do. Most athletes tattoos look like impulse decisions. Poorly done tattoos dont help break the “convicts and sailors” image that tattoos project.

Lastly, I cringe when I hear the term “tats” it makes me think of some “extreme” personality commenting on someones “siqq tats” (usually refering to a terribly done piece)

I don’t have any sports tattoos, but I have a spot saved for when the Indians win the World Series.

concealed78, fading might have been inevitable in the old days, but not any more. I have had my tattoos for many years, and they haven’t faded yet. Even if they did, I wouldn’t care because they are a part of me. Personal expression, personal art, and I am not trying to prove anything.

Yes, many tattoos look awful or cheap, but some can look absolutely beautiful. In many other cultures, getting tattooed is a rite of passage. In Japan, they used to get tattoos all over their bodies and usually had a theme uniting the tattoos. Some still do, but that tends to signify the Japanese mafia. You don’t like tattoos? That’s perfectly fine–don’t get one.

Clevo, I think the use of tats has become so commonplace, it no longer carries a negative connotation in general. I use it with no meaning behind it.

Vince, thanks again for writing this article if for no other reason than that tattoos have become part of the sports’ culture and are regarded as some as part of the uniform.

Last part of my post–regarded by some, not as some as part of the uniform.

The language maven in me compells me to mention that the tattoos don’t actually say those things; the first in particular is just the headline written by the Hanzismatter writer. The first character means “effort” and the second means “tribe”, but there’s no actual tribe bearing that name. Presumably Marcus Camby just went to the tattoo artist and asked for some characters relating to “effort” and “team”.

As for Shawn Marion, the characters’ meaning is irrelevant. He wanted characters that, in Japanese, sounded like “Matrix”, and the three he chose (“ma”, “tori”, and “kusu”) do indeed approximate that word. The third one doesn’t mean “moth balls”; it means a camphor tree.

I like seeing goofy Chinese/Japanese tattoos as much as anyone, but these two aren’t really wrong; they just take some effort to understand. You have to join the 勉斏 to grasp them!

*Ahem* As a former PBA player, the facial hair rule was changed around that time.

The stereotypical “terrible polo shirts and polyester pants” were pretty much gone by the mid eighties. Now, somebody would occasionally sport some questionable attire on the show, but almost all of the players had ditched the fashion from the seventies.

The players (myself included) around that time opted for period appropriate polo (mostly inspired by golf shirts) shirts and casual slacks (namely Dockers and the like).

This tattoo issue is more about it becoming acceptable and common than anything. It’s just another example of further more blurring the boundries of what’s exceptable and what’s not. Times are evolving and it seems that there’s no conduct of code anymore and things like Jeff Bagwell’s ex-wife getting an advertisement tattooed on her chest going; stuff you wouldn’t have seen that 50 years ago, let alone 10. It’s stupidity like that makes me wonder: things are getting stupid / worse. She doesn’t look classy, she looks like a dumb broad. And in years, she’ll realize it when common sense prevails, just like it did in baseball when it went back to road greys & belts.
