Sunday Open Thread

The Indians and Tigers both wore 1977 throwbacks last night, but Cleveland sort of ruined it by wearing their current batting helmets instead of ones emblazoned with the 1977 crooked “C”. The uni’s also lacked belt loops which led Detroit’s Curtis Granderson to comment, “As long as they don’t fall down while I’m running, I’ll be all right.”

Too bad there wasn’t anything else exciting in Cleveland to talk about this morning, right Detroit? —Vince

Kudos to the Indians and Tigers for making the attempt at accurate throwback unis. However, I think the Reds were the only team wearing their socks like that in 1977. If teams are going to continue to go the throwback route, they need to hire a consultant or even a ballplayer from that era to help make sure they do it right.

So please, no more of link until you can make it look like link.

I’d forgotten how immense the names were on those old Tigers jerseys. The numbers being so small only makes the names look even bigger. Not quite in Cincinnati territory, but still pretty ugly.

Any pictures of the Indians’ backs? Did they have a number font to go with that quirky lettering? By the time I started following baseball in the ’80s, they had the same block font that they have now.

does 20 years justify a throwback, particularly since the current uniofrms are the direct result of the awful era that preceded it

IIRC, the Tigers wore 4-inch letters and 6-inch numbers back in the day. It would be fun to see a Detroit throwback jersey for Saltalamacchia…

Is it just me or is anyone else bothered by the fact that the Ottawa senators are sporting a different logo on their home/away sweaters. I might add that the home one looks especially dorky. (Wow darling, that’s a tough looking senator, for sure…brrr)
What are the terms of LeBron’s sponsership with Nike when it comes to the adidas NBA gear?
The only adidas made NBA gear that players would be wearing outside of any shoes they use would be the jerseys and the head/arm bands most likely. A company can’t really tell a player “you will only wear specially made Nike jerseys and Nike bands” since it breaks league regulations.

    From yesterday:

Stuby, my nickname in college was Pyro. I have four tats, and they all include the element of fire.

Jon in SLC, I took another look at the pics, and if the colors are more disparate in person than they are on my computer, which is probable because I have everything dimmed (bad eyes), then the unis would seem off. All the colors would have to be pretty muted for the ensemble to work.

Buffaloes’ new unis: I hate them. The numbers are too big, the gold is god-awful, and even the black looks dull. Do over, please.

Not sure if it’s ever been mention (it probably has), but the San Fran Giants all have their names on the back of their batting helmets. Do any other team do this?

Stuby, Why would Colorado put UC on their helmets? They aren’t part of the California system. In case you haven’t noticed, most universities in the Rockies and High Planes abreviate that way: U of Denver = DU, U of Oklahoma = OU, U of Nebraska = NU, U of Utah = UU (yuk, yuk, yuk!), U of Missouri = MU. It’s a Big 8 thing.
And I think (pains me to say it) but CU joined Team Nike and link (old on left, new on right). The black on black is not Nike’s thing but has been done for years and is link — just look at the fabric and lettering. No more cheep mesh, numbers lay flat, shirt piping is restrained, font easier to read, nice single strand of piping down legs.

Good work Nike. What? Yeah, I said it.

I was hoping to see some analysis of the new Buffs uniforms, or of the Spezza incident. Alas, we’ll have to wait for his Paulness to return and see what he thinks…

There are always open threads on the weekends.

I saw several Tigers wearing Phiten Titanium Sleeves last night, but couldn’t get a screen grab. What do those do? Are they allowed by the MLB?

I have to say that I don’t like the Sens home sweaters either. The logo doesn’t look good and the black “stripe” on it looks ridiculous. So, going off of a uni standpoint I hope the Ducks win. And now we have the Spurs and Cavs in the nba finals. Who has the better uniform? I like Cleveland’s, but I’m a little biased. and someone please tell me that the indians-tigers game was in Detroit last night. If it wasn’t I can only imagine the traffic and parking nightmare here since the Jake and the Q are right next to each other.

Tribe and Tigers looked good last night. Cleveland is still HUNG OVER after last nights Cavs win! WOO HOO!

Ottawa’s best jerseys are the black alternates that you never see anymore. You have to love the olive wreath band and the Parliament building shoulder logo. I think the profile logo on the white jersey is a little dated.

I did a little bit of Googling, and pictures of Frank Robinson and Dennis Eckersley Indians jerseys from the era for sale on the Internet suggest that the numbers were good old block. Not very creative, but if the numbers would have followed the theme of the INDIANS typeface, I think the numbers would have been unreadable.

My comment was in reference to the discussion of last week and the quirkiness of the abbreviation scheme you mentioned in your post. I didn’t really expect them to change their logo. In fact, I rather like it.

Paul better make reference to the Spezza incident tomorrow. For those of you who didn’t see it. Spezza got in a tussle and ripped his jersey. He was supposed to serve a penalty, but didn’t have a jersey, so he went to the room to get a new one, and returned to the box wearing Patrick Eaves #44. He played a shift as Eaves, then got a new jersey. The hockey night in Canada commentators thought it was quite hilarious.
I’m also with mike on the black jerseys. They wore them through the season, but i think don’t wear them in the playoffs due to the link marketing campaign.

Two questions: does that modern Pirates throwback seem like its not yellow enough like Dave Parker’s uni?

And secondly, is that shade of orange on the current Tigers throwback seem a bit bright? Plus the sleeve trim was way fatter than that.

Anyone watching the Mets/Diamondbacks game? Doug Davis is still wearing his Brewer colored batting gloves while playing for the D’Backs

I don’t have any pictures, but yesterday Joe Torre not only wore his regular uniform (thank God), but he was also wearing a very nice watch-a Cartier Roadster (sorry, no pics). I have seen managers in Japan wear Cartier watches with their unis, but I have never seen that in MLB until now. Usually, managers here in MLB wear cheap digital watches made by Timex or Casio.

I like the Senators red jerseys..
Its an original look compared to most teams uni’s.
Unlike the Ducks who went with guess what?.. Black.
    Still better than Eggplant but..
Ducks should utilize that orange trim on their sweaters more. maybe a predominant orange jersey?
Haven’t been to the local river lately but isn’t a duck like tan and dark green?

    STIR-UP CAUSES OUT

Softball College World Series – With one out in the top of the third, Washington’s runner on first attempts to steal second; the throw is late, but Kristie Fox places her foot in front of second. The runner does not slide into her foot, but her cleat catches the red stir-up, not allowing the foot to get to second base; tag applied – runner out.

It also seems Arizona as a team likes to line up their stir-ups with the strip on the pants, unlike Washington.

Yesterdays Red Sox v Yankees game when Manny strolled up to the plate, Joe Buck commented on the big green bag of sunflower seeds hanging out of his back pocket. They also mentioned the time he had a water bottle in his pocket out in left field. Was is also Manny who a coulple seasons ago had on the Oakley Thump sunglasses with the MP3 player attached on out in left during a game?

there have been a number of discussions today on the Spezza/Eaves jersey situation over on the gameworn.net site, including Barry from Meigray mentioned that the Eaves sweater from last night has already been claimed.

Yeah, I just saw his navy blue Adidas batting gloves. Ron Darling just said “If you’re 0 for 50, are you allowed to wear an elbow guard?” haha Also, they said he’s listed as a left handed batter, but he was batting righty all 3 times up today.

Watching Major League 3: Back to the Minors. In one scene Billy “Downtown” Anderson is wearing #14 on the Twins, then next scene in the dugout he has #16. Also many Twins “regulars” in the movie, have high numbers like 63, 80 etc.

One More Note: Jerseys from Little Big League are in Roger Dorn’s owners suite.

I’m watching the French Open, and there was a uni-discussion moment. Two of the players, Tommy Robredo and something Volandri are wearing the exact same outfit. Same headband, same shirt, same shorts. Couldn’t tell if the shoes were the same, but they were both wearing watches as well. The commentators specifically cut to the two of them playing to make snide remarks on telling the players apart. Ted Robinson said that the higher seed should get to wear what he wants and the lower seed has to wear something different. Works for me.

Huge improvement over the old ones. When I heard that Colorado was getting new uniforms, I was hoping for the sleeve stripes from the Kordell Stewart days, but even without them, the uniforms are still very nice. I actually like the gold piping above the chest lettering. One of the things I hated about the old ones were that the gold pants sometimes looked mint green, and it would look terrible. It appears the new gold pants are the right shade. And thankfully, no white pant combos!

A pet peeve of many on this site, so I thought of Uni-Watch when I read this in the Boston Globe today,

Cubs catcher Koyie Hill still has his jackie robinson sticker on his catcher’s mask, and from the same game, Jeff Francouer has been wearing his sunglasses on the back of his head. I cant think of a reason for this, unless like my mom, he has eyes in the back of his head.

Here are some blurry screen grabs of Brendan Ryan showin’ the stripes in his MLB debut:

Hopefully he’ll keep it up; now that Anthony Reyes is back in Memphis, we need someone in STL to demonstrate how to correctly wear baseball pants.

Also, Eric Munson (who was recently called up to the Astros) and Hunter Pence (of course) are wearing their pants high… three players in one game… please, oh please, let me be seeing the beginning of a trend!

It looks like Brendan Ryan is wearing stirrups too, which makes up for the demotion of Anthony Reyes to Triple-A. I’m sitting kind of far from my TV so I’m not 100% sure about it, but they looked like stirrups.

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot more major leaguers are wearing high cuffs this season? I’ve noticed many more big name players are following this excellent styling trend this season. Let’s hope it continues to spread!

    NEW COLORADO FOOTBALL UNIS

This is a lateral move at best. I like the use of silver, gold & white for the trim on the #’s, but this is a mixed up color carnival for the solely for the sake of using the all four colors.

In the mid 1990’s the Buffs had awesome FB jerseys using all of these colors, but the trim was sensible and sharp, with good use of stripes on the sleeves. They also wore a Gold jersey for one game, and it is perhaps the coolest college FB jersey I have ever seen – despite the fact that the “Gold” is VEGAS GOLD – that ghastly color that is nothing more than a hip description of the true color of watered down cat p.ss!!!.

I was fortunate to be able to purchase one and it is indeed very sharp despite the weak gold color.

My beloved N.O. Saints share this problem. They among many teams, probably at the behest of the manufacterers, also worship at the altar of “Vegas Gold”, a weak pitiful mistake of a color. DOES ANY TEAN WEAR OLD GOLD ANYMORE?
Even ARMY has ditched it for that pitiful “Vegas” BS.

And dont even get me started on the Buffs or the Saints wearing the horrid “Black on Black” combo, or the “White on Black” road mess. The black leotard pants look like a ghetto 7th grade teams wearing hand-me-downs, a White Trash idiot fantasy, not to mention it is an ugly, no-class, assinine, false trendy lack of imagination excuse for any NFL or real NCAA uniform.

Oh yeah, but the “Look really tough” …. BARF

Manny Ramirez is wearing his hair holder thingy (my mind is slipping and i cant think of the name)…except it is not only backwards, but inside out. Sorry no screengrab….diving double in the 7th for anyone with TiVo and a camera handy

It’s called a du-rag. Preston Wilson wears one too.

Speaking of “throwback” baseball uniforms, I was just watching the footage of George Brett’s “Pine Tar Incident” on YouTube again and relished in the stirrupy goodness that was the Royals’ and Yankees’ uniforms back then. Nice.

Cleveland is still HUNG OVER after last nights Cavs win! WOO HOO!
Man, I hate Clevaland….

Anyway, I went to the Astros-Cards game yesterday afternoon and from my vantage point at Minute Maid (3rd level 1st base side) it clearly looked like Lance Berkman was wearing nylons. He had his pants pulled high and everything but they had this weird translucent shine. And I could tell it wasn’t normal because Pence’s socks looked normal. I can’t find any photos and I forgot to take them at the game. Maybe someone can find some for me because I really want to know if Lance Berkman wears nylons.

Ahh yes, that is indeed the word. I blanked momentarily…looks ridiculous on anyone, IMO

    The pajama pants look horrible.

No way to explain it other than that.

Players that wear their pants like that, much like managers who wear pullovers and watches, don’t respect the game.
Well this is just not true.

Let’s get real here: Too many MLB players, like the NBA, for some sick reason, love to dress like “gangsta” morons. Hence, we are seeing baggy pants, doo-rags, bizarre hair, monster gold chains, etc.
