Saturday Open Thread

I’m just going to say, I love the Brewers’ throwbacks. It just reminds me of Robin Yount and good baseball.

Yeah, I know a ton of other stuff was going on like the Cavs/Nets, Suns/Spurs, etc., but I really just wanted to share my love of this uniform with you.

To keep you happy though, Boise State unveiled their new uniforms yesterday (but how come the jersey in the video just says “Bronco Nation”? Is that a mock-up only?). Roger Clemens made his first start and appeared to have a large patch on his glove (looks like The Rocket 300 win patch to me, but any help?).

HOUSTON — When Ahman Green arrived in Houston he figured he’d have to go deep into his pockets to get his beloved No. 30 from longtime Texan Jason Simmons.

Green was right about the switch costing him, but not in the way he expected. Simmons said he’d gladly surrender the number if Green made the down payment on a home for a single parent.

The deal was a relief to Green, who signed as free agent with the Texans after playing in Green Bay since 2000. The running back admitted to being nervous that he wouldn’t be able to get his number.

He readied himself for what he thought might be an awkward conversation since Simmons had worn the number for Houston since the team’s inception in 2002. But as soon as he got the question out, he knew it wouldn’t be a problem.

“He said what he wanted to do and I said: ‘Yeah I’m all on board. That’s easy,”‘ Green said. “Tell me where to write the check to. So instead of putting the money into his pocket, he’s going to put in into somebody else’s home, house and help them get their life started.”

I just have to say that I don’t like Boise State’s new jerseys. The thin piping that wraps around the back is totally lame. The old link contrasted well with the blue of the uniform and the Smurf Turf. Now it’s just blue all around with a bit of orange. Also, the teams that changed to the Nike style hasn’t done squat in winning championships since 2000. I can only hope it is not a sign of things to come for the Broncos.

The home uniform features a blue color, with orange piping. A thin orange line starts at the neck line, plunges down the torso and winds around the side, connecting at the mid-lower back.

    AKA apron strings.

And as a kitchen-centric male who seems to receive an apron when friends and family don’t know what to get me (six so far), I don’t mean it as an anti-masculine taunt, just a sartorial insult.

sigh… roger fricking clemens and his stupid patch… does he REALLY need to add a patch to every glove!?

Clemens has been using a Louisville Slugger Clemens model for at least a couple of years now. Here’s a closer look.

I don’t like the new ones either. It goes back to what the board was talking about yesterday with the solid color uniforms. The orange balances out the solid blue of the old uniforms really well, so it’s sad that Nike’s butchered that with this new creation.

That pic of Clemens in the minors reminds me of link. Old man Henderson still trying to steal bases in the minors.

Here are some uniform shots from First Coast HS in Jacksonville, FL from their recent Spring Jamboree. I’m not sure what the thing is on the front of the jerseys. Could be a lightning bolt…but they are the Buccaneers. Any ideas?

He could cahnge his name to Domanick Thorpe-Nagurski-Sayers and it wouldn’t change the fact that he is playing on a knee without cartilage.

re: Brewers… its a great uni. But I was never a fan of the cap logo. I know it got a lot of love for being original and unique but I just thought it was lame.

    Paul,

You just made my day putting Chris Capuano and the best alternate/throwback jersey in the game on the front page of Uni Watch today. (Too bad Boof Bonser pitched a gem last night in Brew City)

The Crew’s Retro Friday uniform, I believe, is the best uni period in baseball today. I know I am biased, but come on… they are pretty special. The pinstripes, ball-in-glove hat/sleeve patch, 1982 Anniversary patch on the right sleeve, yellow and blue colors, simple writing on the jersey… With all that being said, that is why this is the only jersey I own, and am pretty darn proud of it.

But what do you call it? Retro, throwback, alternate, or all of the above?

In all honesty, I think it’s just an arbitrary design that has nothing to do with the name of the team.

I love when FB players take the belt, put tape on it to add to the overall scheme, and then have it hang halfway to their knees. Especially HS-aged players. No “my body is doing crazy things and this testosterone level is about to kill me so I’ll prove how much of a man I am” metaphors there or anything… Ahh, high school. Who doesn’t miss that stuff?
Since I mentioned belts it reminds me of guys I went to HS with who would take the belts out of their breezers (hockey pants for the uninitiated) and wear them with jeans, shorts; whatever. There really wasn’t a point to their doing it but it was funny for some reason.

Final thought for now (different topic): has anyone else noticed how one guy’s ear will link from his helmet but link? I wonder why the CoolFlo helmets seem to be cut lower in this area; it seems odd since a batter wouldn’t be hit by a pitch on the back of his head.

When you turn ur back to a pitch the back of your head is exposed. Thus the extra protection.

Woudln’t that “300 Wins” patch be more appropriate with a picture of Clemens sitting at his kid’s high-school game? Or showing up every 5th day and collecting a nice hefty paycheck?

    I love those Brewers’ uniforms!

My guess on the Boise State Unis is that it’s the “Fan Jersey” – notice the #12 – (like The Bronco Nation is the Twelfth Man?)

I really think the patch that Rent-a-Rocket has on his glove looks like an All-Star Patch, or a World Series Patch.

That Brewers throwback looks great. I wonder if the Brewers will eventually go back to those uniforms full-time?

Great photo of Freddie Sanchez pants. I’m going to use it as a jumping-off point to describe why I’m interested in uniforms.

Part of my enjoyment of watching professional sports (primaryly MLB) is watching the players make their body make the play (ie. sliding, extension, leaping, flexability, running, etc.). I think one important part of the uniform is to help the spectator appreciate these amazing abilities of the player. A baseball uniform should move with the player and allow the player to move.

I like high socks because they allow the spectator to see the knees and ankles in motion.

I dislike baggy uniforms because they distort the motions of the players. However, please do not think this means I want embarrassing skin-tight uniforms.

I dislike mono-chromatic uniforms, mainly NFL examples, because they make it hard to see ankle, knee, waist, and arm movements.

In artistic athletic events, for example, figure skating and ball-room dancing, the athelete use the uniform or costume to exagggerate their movements. So, swishing, swirling, floating of the costume are desired effects. I do not like swirling and swishing basketball shorts.

Now back to Freddie Sanchez’s pants, the side stripe is no where near aligned with his lower leg. The wide bottom of the pants has a swishing look. I do not want swishing and swirling in Baseball!!!! I want Baseball uniforms not Baseball costumes!!!!

Nike? New uniform? Bad design? Yaaaaawwwwnn!

It’s a fitting contrast, though, to the excellent Brewers uniform. That ball-in-glove logo is a classic.

link in Stuttgart today. Gag. Energie (the visiting orange squad) had black & gold alts. Why didn’t they wear them?

A few posts ago, you posted the logo for the Shoeless Joe team. Upon looking at it, it appears that the hands are switched on the bat. The traditional right handed batter would have a left handon bottom with the right hand on top. The logo however has the right hand on bottom and the left hand on top.

The reason the Boise mock up jersey has “Bronco Nation” instead of “Boise State” is because the original design is a Nike copyrighted design. That jersey was manufactured (as stated in the article) by a third party who does not own the rights to produce an exact replica. My guess is the “Bronco Nation” is just part of their own individual design.

A note on yesterday’s hospital band story, whenever you talk about ballplayers having kids youve got to look at Rob Mackowiak’s story from 3 years ago link (hope that worked), and on a side note that happened on my prom night, I flipped out

and on the Clemens thing… dont even get me started but maybe he should have a giant $ on the glove

    link

couldnt get the link to work, heres the address for the mackowiak story/picture with the wristband

Paul, for the membership cards, how about the classic look of the name under the number.
    Just a thought

Put me in the minority regarding the Brewers’ throwbacks. I always thought the mitt logo was goofy looking. It looked worse on the blue and gold cap. I was happy with the link redesign that incorporated Braves-like piping, but the link (and current) design was especially elegant.

There was a picture in the New York Daily News or New York Post last week that shows the patch on the back of Roger Clemens glove and the patch says RocketMan with a likeness of Clemens on it

You are right.. my bad. Thanks Vince, great observation. I do have to say the Tribe and Reds have great uni’s as well.

I don’t think the Crew would go full-time with the retro look. It is about time they brought it back for retro home nights, but to go full time with it might be overkill.

did you guys catch that Roger also switched cleats from warm ups to game time. In the warmup pic, he was wearing black Adidas w/ white stripes and in the pic at the top, he is wearing black Adidas w/ red stripes (maybe his Astros cleats?)

Looks like Roger “Paycheck” Clemens hasn’t gone shoe shopping yet…seems like he has shoes from last season on w/ the red on em.

Do you think this is to keep consistent “weight” in the chest area with their current style — I know hockey players are usually quite fussy about weight of the logos and such.

they really should. these threads are gorgeous. and the mb glove and ball logo is one of the best and most creative in the history of the game. milwaukee should ditch those late 90’s cop out unis. i mean, navy blue? for the brew crew? yuck.

The best part about this logo is that it was just a freelance job done by a college student for a contest. I’m glad that they went that route then because most teams wouldn’t even bat an eye toward any fan submission.

Best quote on SportsCenter this morning came during the top ten plays:

“The Pirates decided to play in their hunting vests last night.”

I’m so sick of Clemens. Every year..’will he or won’t he.’ GO AWAY. (unless you want to pitch for the Giants…)

The thing about the Brewers throwback/alternate jerseys, and for all throwback/alt. jerseys in general, is that because they are worn infrequently, it makes it more special when they finally get in the game.

My favorite football jersey is the Chargers powder blues/ white helmet, and I’m pumped that next season they are basically switching back to them (w/ minor modifications), but I’m worried that they will lose some of their ‘kick’ if they get worn every week.

That’s right. A lot of people love most of the throwbacks teams wear. But they can lose their specialness if worn all the time. You will love it at first, but then it’ll be overvill halfway through the season. But I wouldn’t mind wearing them 2 or 3 times a week.

interesting because orange is NOT an official undershirt color for the mets. the mets were more relaxed about this in the late 90’s early 2000. john franco wore his late father’s orange nyc department of sanitation shirt in honor him and piazza and others wore orange undershirts a few times, but since omar minaya became general manager, it seems the team has gotten stricter about this, as only blue and black undershirts have really been prominent. so, long story short, it is surprising to see wright with an orange undershirt today.

i flipped past one of the ESPNs while they’re showing college softball and noticed that UCLA wears white stirrups over white sanitaries. the stirrups look like they have a bit of outline piping on them but that could just be a shadow. i don’t know that i’ve ever seen a monochromatic stirrup/sani combo before.
I’m so jealous of all the schools with any kind of stirrups…my school only has link, complete with logo-creeped link. And we don’t have a varsity baseball team, so this is it as far as chances for stirrups go up here. At least we have a classic link. I can be proud of that.

Well, the current road greys have only been in use since 1973, right? A change to the road unis would be less of an issue than a change to the iconic pinstripes which they have used since 1936, in my opinion.

Haven’t the Yankees already gone to the dark side? Signing Sheffield, taking the steroids clause out of Giambi’s contract, bending over for Roger Clemens……?

If the Yankees would ditch the silly stripes at the end of the sleeves, and the white outlining on the lettering and numbers, their road uniforms would be perfect!

Actually, I think around the same time that the double-knits were introduced, the Yankees changed the number font on their jerseys, making it thicker and bulkier. Look at Mickey Mantle’s #7 and then look at a current 7; the new one has a hook on the top and a base on the bottom. The Angels also used link for a while in the 1990s.

For years the Yankees had their uniforms made by Wilson while the rest of the league used Rawlings or Russell; I suspect that they still use someone other than Majestic. When Majestic started making the jerseys, they started placing the numbers (for teams without names on jerseys) seven inches below the collar as opposed to the usual five or six, but if you look at the Yankees, their numbers are placed perfectly just as they always have been.

I do not want swishing and swirling in Baseball!!!! I want Baseball uniforms not Baseball costumes!!!!
I would swear that at one time..the NYY were considering changing their road uniforms, to a gray version of the home. Right- they wear the regular white pinstripes at home, then a gray version of same on the road. Did you ever hear of such a thing?
That rumor was just an April Fool’s Day stunt.
They did not wear them like that. They wear the numbers up there this season because there was a thought of the jersey number moving to the front of the jersey in the new Rbk Edge system. Since they are not keeping the alternate jerseys next season, it’s just an addition to another Buffalo jersey they won’t be keeping.

No, not at all. If that’s the case, why wear it on the shoulder?
Thanks for the info about the Sabres — the only reason why I wondered about the shoulder number is because my alma mater’s players had issues with logo weight/size on the chest.

it’s not there b/c the Yankme’s have a deal with Adidas not Majestic. That’s why everything around the hole in the Bronx has 3 stripes.
True, and Major League Baseball has this “small” issue with logos on the uniform. It’s surprising that they even allow the Majestic logo on the shirts, when they won’t even allow the New Era logo on the caps. Where’s the consistency on the rule?

Here’s some throwbacks that need to come back for a game or two…

(I don’t think these have ever been done)

Mid-’80s Pirates (I just love the pillbox caps and the yellow helmets)

    ’80s Orioles

    ’80s Blue Jays

    ’75 Indians

    ’80s Mariners

    ’80s-’90s Giants (football)

    pre-Dungy Buccaneers

    pre-2000 Seahawks

And I absolutely can’t wait for the Steelers to wear their throwbacks this September…again, yellow helmets…

The Yankees do have a deal with Adidas, but the game jerseys are only made by majestic. They do have a deal with majestic not to have the logo anywhere on the jersey (other than the tag on the bottom of the jersey) because it looks more professional and more like a baseball jersey of the past, keeping with the traditional look of their uniforms.
The Brewers throwbacks are a thing of beauty. I only wish that they would wear the road caps.
    link

Hell. Yes. More exciting than the fact they’d be wearing those utra-retro-looking caps, they’d be wearing throwbacks on the road! On out-of-town Fridays I suppose. Awesome.. would never happen though, eh?
