As most of you are aware, the big news in the uni world is that the Braves finally called up Jarrod Saltalamacchia yesterday, which means the MLB record for most letters in a surname has just gone from 13 to 14. I’ve written a short item about this for ESPN.com — scroll down to the lower-left portion of this page.
Meanwhile: Got a note the other day from reader Alan Chewning, who said he was slated to be a volunteer for this year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont and had just received his uniform. “Would you be interested in pics?” he asked. Yo, does vertically arched lettering kick radial arching’s ass? Of course I’m interested!
Chewning went above and beyond by providing a very informative rundown of the whole situation regarding U.S. Open volunteers. Here’s his report:
I decided to volunteer after reading a Wall Street Journal about how the USGA operates largely because of volunteers. There will be over 12,000 volunteers that work for the USGA this summer, with 5,000 of those working at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh. In order to volunteer, you have to apply online and. if selected, pay $150. This fee covers the cost of the uniform. You can apply to volunteer for all sorts of positions, from course marshall to merchandise to hospitality services to driving the players back to their hotels at the end of the day. Since I’m a first-timer, I’ll be volunteering as a cashier in the merchandise pavilion (there are actually more than a dozen different positions just within merchandise). Each volunteer is scheduled for a five-hour shift each day of the tournament. Volunteers then have the rest of the day to do what they want (watch golf, stay home, etc).
On to the uniform: I received two shirts (here’s a closer view), a jacket (front, back, zipper), and a cap (front, back, side). The first thing that struck me was the inconsistency in the logos. They change the color scheme to match whatever garment or surface it’s being applied to — sometimes with great detail, sometimes not.
Ashworth is the manufacturer for everything except the water bottle, but there’s absolutely no logo creep. Their logo is inside of everything but not outside, so bonus points for that. (I should note, however, that they put the Open logo on EVERYTHING in the box — even the shirt cardboard.)
Weirdest part of the uniform: The sleeve patch of the shirt says “USGA 2007” and is rendered in gold, black, and green. There’s no other part of the uniform that features gold and black. I assume it’s an understated nod to the sports franchises of Pittsburgh.
Most assinine aspect: the “Important Information Enclosed” envelope. There was nothing important in it — just a swatch to let you know what color khaki your khakis need to be, a diagram on how to fold your jacket into a pocket and carry it around like a fanny pack, and a sheet of paper that was a manifesto for the things within the package.
All in all, I dig the uniform and the colors. Some years, the uniforms are out of control–remember what the players wore in the 1999 Ryder Cup?
Pretty interesting stuff — big thanks to Alan for all the info. But if a squirrel doesn’t scamper onto the fairway and make off with Tiger Woods’s ball at some point during the tournament, I’m gonna be way pissed.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Pretty amusing blog entry here about the uniforms in those Esurance ads. … I’ve been getting a lot of queries about this photo, which is currently running in a gallery at SI.com. Everyone wants to know what’s up with the guy wearing the inside-out jersey and the blue shorts. Answer: The player in question is Mike Gale of the Spurs. He uniform was somehow lost in transit as the team traveled to Washington, and there was no backup uni for him, so the Bullets gave him a road uni to wear. … There’s a somewhat similar inconsistency going on here — note the two Boston players. Anyone know the story behind this one? … Another college baseball team with striped hose: UConn (with thanks to Eddie DiPrimio). … Dominic J. Litten reports that lots of new English Premier League soccer jerseys have just been unveiled (or leaked), including Blackburn, Bolton, Arsenal, Everton, and Tottenham. … Surprising mistake here, as the first sentence erroneously suggests that the Yankees’ pinstripes are black (rather than midnight blue).
Uniwatch has changed the way I view sports! I am now a font of useless (to my friends, interesting to me) information. And Minna, you now have another regular female opinion here! I’ve been reading for several months, and I always promise to actually read posts before commenting to alleviate any redundancy!
What is with the green on the Arsenal shirt? I think I like it and am sort of uncomfortable with that feeling.
As readers reported last night on yesterday’s Uni-Watch blog, Salty’s name was placed off center on the back of his jersey…tilting a bit to the right. Guess they didn’t start far enough down the left side of the jersey!
The local Phillies broadcasters had a running dialog about how he has the longest name in MLB history, and Larry Anderson saying “It’s really tough to fit that on a uni.” I was going to make note of the actual conversation, but I figured someone else here would.
I’m pretty sure thats gold, not green.
What is with the green on the Arsenal shirt? I think I like it and am sort of uncomfortable with that feeling.
I would be uncomfortable liking ANYTHING about Arse-nal. :P And I too think they’re just using a white change kit to screw with Tottenham. COME ON YOU SPURS! (We’re going to finish top 4 next year–guaranteed.)
In reference to really long names, I always liked link.
Does Saltalamacchia also hold the record for most syllables in a surname by a major leaguer with 6?
If this was mentioned before, I apologize.
Yesterday the Pirates completed their game with the Cubs which had been suspended the previous night. The Pirates wore red jerseys on Tuesday night but donned the standard white tops for the final 2.5 innings on Wednesday.
I wonder if a precedent was set?
The accent on that Arsenal shirt looks gold to me as well, and it’s worth noting that the shirt design hasn’t been confirmed yet. Going by that blog, it’s not supposed to be officially released until August.
Esurance ad: Now THERE’S a template the WNBA should use! :)
As a Gunners fan, I am more uncomfortable that the away kit will be white.
Spurs would be a Top 4 caliber club, if they had even an average defense. How does it feel being the only club in Europe that cares about the UEFA Cup and still not being able to win it?
I know there was talk last week how the Simpsons do their Isotopes baseball unis link, but I was up late last night and noticed that Futurama did them right also.

Mr. Burns isn’t wearing stirrups. How can we call that a “uniform”?

Not really surprising because it’s an Associated Press story. They make glaring errors all the time.

I should also mention that it appears that Homer is wearing his stirrups backwards. The higher arch looks like it’s on the front on his shin, rather than the high arch being on the back on his calf like it should be.
That dude needs to learn how to dress.

Did you notice that Mr. Burns has striped socks and but no stirups, and the catcher apears to have neither, just plain ol’ white socks.
Those Man U jersey’s have been gold, you can check that on soccer.com, or in my closet.
I guess it is gold- I could have sworn it was green. As a Fulham fan we don’t have many gold accents! That and we are usually looking at the back of Arsenal (and the majority of the rest of the League) as they run past and score… again.
I had the Braves game on for a little while last night and saw they had called up Salty. The mrs. came in at one point and commented how that really long name looked silly on his jersey. I took that moment to break into a vertical vs. radial arching talk. She immediately left the room.

That’s hilarious.
Not gonna lie, I saw them feature Salty on SportsCenter this morning, and I immediately though, “Damn, Paul must be crying tears of joy or something, because he’s been fascinated with this dude for well over a year.”
And then I realized how fascinated with this site I am, just by thinking that…and I’m happy with that.

Interesting note on Michael Jordan, who played with Tiger Woods in a pro-am yesterday.
“The two have made millions pitching Nike products (although Jordan had Ping clubs in his bag).”

Unfortunately, that ESPN story about the “black” Yanks pinstripes isn’t even the first time this season that somebody has made that mistake. Check out this story in the Washington Post that makes the same mistake.

That “USGA 2007” logo is racking my brain. I don’t get it. It’s not an anniversary logo. The USGA was established in 1894, and the first US Open was in 1895. The only thing of note that happened in 1897 was the first collegiate golf championship, won by Yale.
I think it’s just a throw in so that they can have something on the sleeves.
did anyone notice the crooked nameplate on A’s starter Chad Gaudin’s jersey last night? The GA were headed in one direction and the UDIN was headed in another. I couldn’t look away.

I think Mr. Burn’s uniform is supposed to look very dated (i.e. 19th Century), since his age and lack of touch with the modern world is a running gag on the show. Notice too the collar and the different cap style on his uni. I’m not saying it’s actually historically acturate, but I’m pretty sure that what the writers/illustrators were going for by making his uniform different.

I have volunteered at the 2003 Open at Olympia Fields, the 2005 Walker Cup at Chicago Golf Club, the 2006 PGA at Medinah and annually at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. If you love golf this is the way to go. Of course your paying to “volunteer” but it’s still a lot of fun. I would recommend it to anyone that loves golf. Its also a nice way to build up a collection of tournament swag.

I was at the Cards/Brewers game yesterday afternoon (nice sweep by the Crew on a side note) And I was talking to my friends about why Johnny Estrada (even though he didn’t play yesterday, but he was stretching in front of us) wears his socks high. And I also pointed out that wearing your socks high is diminishing throughout MLB and told my friend just to look around and see how many pajama pants there were on the field….
They immediately gave me a glaring look, asked me if I was done talking, and went back to drinking their Miller Lite.
*sigh…
I’m sure Langy is glad his time in white shoes is over. He can go back to wearing the black “Easton” shoes with the Nats. That’s was faster than Piazza’s layover with the Marlins. Here, for posterity, is Langerhans in an A’s uni:

Someone beat you to this punch. They mentioned it yesterday.
I can totally understand why people get the Yankees colors confused. And those of us outside New York should be allowed two “Yankees in black” passes per year. I always have to remind myself that they wear a dark navy, because in all kinds of pictures and video it looks like black. So despite looking like black pinstripes and hats, we just have to force ourselves to remember that it’s navy.
Langerhans traded again.

I don’t think that Simpsons picture is from the Isotopes episode. That’s a picture of the company softball team full of ringers that Burns puts together. Great episode.
The Isotopes were the minor league team in Springfield and Homer wasn’t on the team. Also a great episode.
Also, I think they changed the Yankees story on ESPN because it no longer has the bad reference that I can see.

Good call, Terriers. I thought that Mattingly and Boggs may have been switched due to the glove as well. But looking at their faces, you’re right.
As for what fell each competitior, Roger Clemens thought he was a chicken; Mike Scioscia contracted a tragic illness through an overdose of radiation; Wade Boggs was punched out by Barney; Mattingly was kicked off the team by Mr. Burns for his moustache and sideburns; Steve Sax was given six life sentences by Chief Wiggam for the all the murders in New York City; Canseco was saving a burning house; Griffey’s head went gigantic after drinking nerve tonic; and Ozzie fell down a bottomless pit.
Strawberry made it to the game, but was pulled for Homer in the last inning.

Well, Derek Jeter is a Michigan fan, and even spent a semester in Ann Arbor. I can’t remember if that was at the same time that Brady was at UM or not, might have been around 1995 or 6, in which case it was a bit before. At any rate, that might be why Brady is a Yankee guy.

Yes, that’s the one–thank you, I think I had just finally got it out of my head…and there it is again.
During the Cubs/Pirates game yesterday, there was a long conversation about eye black with relation to Alfonso Soriano. Bob Brenley, the Cubs play by play man, thought it was stupid Soriano wore eye black with lettering on it. He was like “won’t that just reflect into your eyes?” They then talked about old school and showed Adam Laroche who just had black gunk on his face.
Additionally, there was a pirates player who had his pirates logo patch from the undershirt up on top of his shoulder. It was almost completly hidden by the sleveless jerseys.

Also “Dancing Homer” in a different episode. Hungry Hungry Homer wasn’t really a mascot either; The ‘Topes exploited him while he was on a hunger strike protesting the team’s move to Albuquerque. “You know me, sometimes I’ll be quirky…wait, Albuquerque!”
Two things:
One, the comment the other day about the Padres making their pitcher carry a little kids back pack explains why I saw an Akron relief pitcher carrying a Tinkerbell backpack at a recent Reading Phillies (Eastern League) game.
Two, I’ve been watching the Stanley Cup with renewed interest since I have begun playing again, and I have noticed that the players’ gloves have different color schemes according to manufacturer. For example, all the Devils player’s gloves are red, black and white, but are different mixtures of these colors. It makes for interesting uni watching, seeing how many different varieties of color schemes will show up on one club.
Sorry Mr. “Get With the Times” But since I have a job and live on the west coast, by the time I get to UNIWATCH the comments are generally at 100+. If I see a comment I want to respond to, I actually assume somebody else will have beaten me to it, asshole.

I know Eric Williams of various NBA team rosters is a Yankees fan and didn’t hide it when he played in Boston, but then again he was from Jersey. There are a few Yankees fans, and Colts fans as well, who work for the team as well. It makes for some entertaining conversation.
Funny story about Stuckenschneider…he played for the Savannah Sand Gnat in the SALLY League when I was scoring and doing the music for the Augusta Greenjackets…well our P.A. guy announces him up “now leading off, centerfielder, Eric Stuckenschneider”…no biggie right? So the GM comes racing up to the press box with a serious look and goes to the P.A. guy “Did you just say Eric is Stuck Inside Her in front of all these people?” He had no clue what the guys name was and heard it only over the P.A……I can’t ever remember laughing so hard at a game in my life….

Why would you assume that there are no female volunteers? Every golf tournament I’ve been too has about 25% female volunteers. Of course not!
Some of us (myself included), know that a full apreciation of the Simpsons calls for high attention to detail, and can become, in a way, as obsessive as uni-watching. Perhaps it is because often times the funniest gag in the show is also the most subtle. Sorry if some of us rambled off topic today.

One thing on the Tom Brady ‘scandal’: I think he shouldn’t get hassled for wearing a Yankees hat in his off-time, especially if he isn’t in Boston at the time–but only if he truly is a Yankees fan and is not being trendy. Just because he works for the Patriots doesn’t mean he has to give up supporting his own favorite teams.
Just checked out Paul’s paragraphs on Page 2 about the inimitable Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
I always thought that the “of” in his name was English, and that his ancestors had lived in England at some point around Chaucer’s time when people still had “of” before location-based surnames, like many other languages still do. And there are plenty of English-speaking people with the Dutch “van” before their surnames, right?
But, clicking the Wikipedia link, I see that i was mistaken. The truth is much more interesting than this:
His name – the longest in European football – derives from the 17th Century, when two farming families in the Enschede area of Holland intermarried. Both the Vennegoor and Hesselink names carried equal social weight, and so – rather than choose between them – they chose to use both. “Of” in Dutch translates to “or” in English, which would mean that a strict translation of his name would read ‘Jan Vennegoor or Hesselink’.
What Jan needs to do is move to a Hispanic country and get married. Their children will then bear both of their parents’ surnames, only instead of something simple like “Uribe y Gonzalez”, it’ll work out to “Vennegoor of Hesselink y Rodriguez”, with an ‘or’ and an ‘and’ in the same name!
People will be asking them, “Let me get this straight; your name is either ‘Vennegoor’ OR ‘Hesselink-and-Rodriguez’?”
“No, no; it’s ‘Vennegoor-or-Hesselink’ AND ‘Rodriguez’.”
“So I could call you ‘Vennegoor-and-Rodriguez’ if I were in the mood?”
“Just forget it; I’ll call myself ‘Cafú’.”

Speaking of long names, I love saying link name. Go ahead. Say it out loud. It will make you smile. My mom thought it was two guys when she heard the name. Someone on the board mentioned him the other day, and it would be nice if he took up a sport where he had his name on the back.

And there are plenty of English-speaking people with the Dutch “van” before their surnames, right?
As a first generation American with Dutch roots, I will support this. I always notice a MLB player with a Dutch name, like Johnny Vander Meer, John Vander Wal, David Aardsma, Shea Hillenbrand, Lenny Dykstra. Anything with a “Van” or a “Van Der” or excessive V’s is Dutch. And of course the double O always throws people (like Voorhies for instance)

Very nice job Ian. The VAL also takes up less room on the jersey too. I commend your effort, even though I get your comments confused with my own. And in spite of your Braves support, Bizzaro Ian.
Wow, it’s quite a trip seeing my pics of Cory Rauschenberger linked to on Page 2! Thanks, Paul! Too bad Salty beat him to the bigs, but I’m not really surprised… Cory hasn’t exactly been having a great season thus far.
And, Minna, I guess you can add me to the list of the female contingency… I don’t comment too often, but I’m always here!
I’m a Little League team mom who’s the official scorekeeper and a one-time uni manager (ok, ok, I just made the call to remind them what to wear). My boys and I were uni-talking about batting helments and gloves at a recent MLB game. We got strange looks all night. The home team lost.
Yea for the UniWatch Ladies!
Thanks Minna for the olive- I’m glad that someone else doesn’t see it as a true gold fabric.
Embrodiery and fabric aren’t going to look exactly the same but if you compare collar color with the gold in the patch it’s not even close.

Has anyone given thought to creating a Uni Watch message board for easier readability? Not to say that Paul has enough things to do, but I could even look into it if there’s interest. (At previously mentioned cube preventing me from going to golf tourneys, I am actually a bit of a tech girl, but shhh, it’s not good for my street cred.)
I think a message board would go far in making things easier to read. There are some days I don’t even want to open up the comments because I just know there is another half an hour of my day gone!
Absolutely Hilarious!

Aside from Rick Vaughn, I can’t think of any other current pitchers that wear glasses, but Terrence Long wore them pretty regularly. I also remember seeing lots of guys with glasses in the 70’s and 80’s.

I suppose Kent Tekulve doesn’t count.
Speaking of Tekulve, gotta love this photo:

Looks like he’s wearing his sunglasses at night.

If you mean the Yankees’ Terrence Long, I don’t remember him ever wearing glasses as a Royal. As far as current pitchers that wear glasses, link springs to mind, and his battery mate link wears them too.
Re: my post #195, I realize what Phillips is wearing might be more accurately described as “goggles,” but still.
this is a bit random but i’m watching the Rockets-Jazz game and noticed Juwan Howard and i remembered his days on the link. and then i realized he wore number 5 and a couple years after he left another Howard, link, joined the team and wore the same number. i thought it was a pretty odd phenomena how two players with the same last name wore the same number for the same team much less so close together. some Mavs fans got some extra mileage out of their Juwan Howard jerseys. i was wondering oif this had occurred elsewhere.

Mr. Lukas used something similar in his recent ESPN column link. Jiri Hrdina wore #38 for the Pittsburgh Penguins, only to be followed up by Jan Hrdina (no relation), another #38 for the Pens.

Yeah, and Michael Jordan once wore #12 when his jersey was stolen. He actualy scored 49 points that day, a Bulls team record for someone wearing #12.

Today on “Rome is Burning”, Jim Rome repeatedly referred to Jordan as “Forty Five” while mocking his little golf skit with Tiger. I love it when Rome does that.

Dan, I hate that crap, too. All the women out there–if you see a woman wearing any gear not related to the team (especally if pink), please whap them upside the head. As y’all know, I don’t really go for the boy-next-door, quarterback of the varsity football team type.
Dan, (same Dan?), if the North Stars shirt came in black, I would buy it in a heartbeat. However, I think a white background would be more classic. Either way, it IS pricey for a T-shirt.
Pink bats: If I ignore them, then they really don’t exist.
stuby, I am pretty sure the stirrups B.G. meant are link. They were pretty big in the ’80s.

Minna, trust me I know from 80’s clothes. Those kind of stirrup pants went well with the crazy big shoulder-pad sweaters.
The way it was presented in her post, well, my mind immediately went to the kind of stirrups they have at (what my wife refers to as) the upside-down dentist’s office. I hope a further elaboration is not necessary. =)

Cricket??? I saw some cricket on TV the other day, and I thought to myself, “That is one sport I’ll never get.” Then again, I thought the same thing about hockey, and I am slowly warming up to it.
Anyway, welcome aboard, and you are on the list. I have no idea what I’m going to do with the list, but my OCD demands I keep it.

The problem I have with those jerseys (besides being butt-ugly) is that someone clearly thought, “Ok, we need to feminize these unis in order to get guys to watch.” Besides the fact that this doesn’t work (this big study showed that making the women athletes sexy doesn’t draw more men to watch and really pisses off the existant female fans), it misses the whole point. Women do not need to look sexy to play sports. They should be wearing those things on a shoot or maybe to a club, but not to ball.
The clothes should fit the situation. End of screed.
One more thing. Don’t know if you read it, dpnation, but a couple weeks ago, there was a discussion of what makes a woman sexy. It seems that a woman who likes sports and wears a jersey (with nothing else except, perhaps, stirrups) is considered pretty damn sexy.

Yeah, I noticed tonight that at least Wright, Beltran and LoDuca were using those bats. I don’t think they are Mizuno though, or at least not the normal mizuno because all the ones I’ve seen use the link
Well, the Ducks beat the Canucks tonight so we wont be seeing those awesome alternates or Luongos sweet helmet for the rest of the playoffs, im a little sad, because they inspired me to buy a Luongo Alt jersey, my first in a long time

After further review, it’s definitely not Mizuno.
Here’s the best pic of it that I could find, with the bat in Carlos Beltran’s hands, a few weeks ago.

The whole “unintentionally repping my teams” thing gets annoying, especially when their colors do not match one bit. Normally I pay little attention to what I wear, but when I see that I’ve managed to wear a teal shirt, a bright blue jacket, and an orange hat to class I kind of feel sorry for myself.
a couple points:
whatever cool points UConn baseball gets for the stirrups are flushed by the logo creep. the swoosh on the left chest really sticks out like a sore thumb. boo.
from the links to the (purported) new Premiership shirts, I was disappointed to see they are changing fonts for names and numbers. i like the font now (don’t know the name), i think it’s distinctive and really looks great. iirc the brewers used something similar for player names a couple years back, really looked nice on the white home jerseys. i always disliked when english teams used different fonts for their CL kit. boo again.
and a final boo to jordan’s cream colored mock turtleneck. one thing i blame tiger for is popularizing mock Ts as golf shirts. looks hiedous.
or *hideous* even.
