Ah, the pageantry of Opening Day. Paul Byrd was one strike away from making it an official game when the Indians/Mariners contest was officially snowed out (additional pics here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).

Great, thanks for reminding me. I put in 10 hours at the park yesterday, leaving right now to put in 13 or 14 because of the double-header. Hope everyone else is somewhere warm.

i actually started watching that game but then i had to jet to the rents for a ‘good friday’ get together. [lots more visitations this weekend also, and lots of food].

I too was at the Jake yesterday. What a crazy time for my first ever opening day at the ballpark.

I have a little bit of advise for Adrian Beltre. Next time you’re playing in 25 degrees and snow, you might want to put on some long sleeves. Maybe you’ll have a little bit better day in the field.

Overall it was a good time though, despite the cold, snow, and missing an unofficial/official no hitter by 1 freakin pitch. Oh, and that double header today…good luck. We have a Lake Effect snow advisery until 4 am Sunday. GO TRIBE!!!!!

If they were that close to it being official couldn’t they tough it out for one more out? Are they going to pick up the game where it left off (Ive seen minor league teams do this), or will the game start over?

Somewhat uni-related, on PTI yesterday, when referring to the controversy over AJ Pierzynski’s HBP on Thursday, Kornheiser recommended that MLB apply dye to baseballs so that umpires could have irrefutable proof in that situation. Sounds like a bad idea, but with Bud Selig, you never know…

It looks like the Dodgers won’t be the only team with everybody wearing #42 to honor Jackie Robinson April 15th (the 60th anniversary of his debut, for those who missed yesterday’s entry); according to link story, the Cardinals will also all don Robinson’s #42 on that day. A fitting tribute to a man who changed American society, not just baseball.

According to an earlier story in the Post-Dispatch, a group of Cardinals prior to Robinson’s debut was attempting to gather signatures vowing not to play against a “black” man. That racist movement died a sudden and deserved death when the group approached the team’s best player, Stan “The Man” Musial. His response was along the lines of, “Get that thing out of here — I’ll have nothing to do with anything like that!” It’s a bit ironic that a franchise that was among the last to actually integrate wound up featuring African-American players who became great fan favorites… such as Bob Gibson, Bill White, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Terry Pendleton, and Ray Lankford.

Per Baseball Tonight, a Mariner on 1st looked across the diamond and motioned that he couldn’t see because of the snow, and the Mariners skipper went out to discuss it with the umps, and the game was called. There had previously been other delays b/c of the snow but they kept trying to get it done.

I almost feel bad for Byrd. Yes, he was one strike away from closing the game at 5 1/2 innings with a no-hitter, but the bases were loaded at the time the game was called. He could’ve ended it with the guy on 3rd, 2nd, or 1st before getting to the guy at the plate when the game was called.

They start over with a clean slate today at 1:05. The stats are erased and a new page in the scorebook is started.

About finishing the Cleveland game, it was ugly, the umps should have called it earlier. During the last batter, the snow was coming down hard, there is no way the guy could have seen the white ball in so much snow.

I was at the Reds vs. Pirates game in Cincinnati last night and I don’t have any visual proof but Adam Dunn was wearing a black hand warmer on his waist, which looked quite a bit like a fanny pack from a distance.

Also, I was sitting just a few rows up down the third base line and it sure looked like Pirates 3rd base coach Jeff Cox’s number 7 on the back of his uniform was a 2 with the little line at the bottom cut off. Maybe it was an actual 7 but when standing next to Xavier Nady’s 22, they sure did look alike. Again, I don’t feel the need to bring a camera to the ballgame but with my uni fascinations picking up, this maybe should change.

Has anyone noticed if the Dallas Mavericks worn their silver (ekk) uniforms this season?

todays games in Cleveland have both been cancelled. Maybe because I got more snow last night than I had the previous 2 days here.

they are going to try to get a twin bill in tomorrow.

I’ll have some pics from yesterday on my blog later today.
Has anyone noticed if the Dallas Mavericks worn their silver (ekk) uniforms this season?
I believe those were worn only one time ever. Mark Cuban axed them and the green retro alt was born.

Maybe UniWatch mentioned this in the ESPN.com rundown of MLB unis, but the Brewers were wearing their Sunday alternates last night (the whites with the pinstripes and the ball-in-glove logo). Not that this is bad, I am a big fan of the unis.

I was trying to think of any uniform changes made by teams that only lasted for a season before eather changing again or reurning to a previous design, The ones ive come up with so far is the 1987 Mets road jersey with “new york” in slanted joined up script which lasted that one season, of course the Mets had the unis in 93 and 94 which had a tail under the “Mets” script before going back to the traditional look. Does anyone else have any examples, soccer teams dont count since they change every year anyway.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Adam Dunn wore a football-style handwarmer last night with a Bengals logo. I can’t find a picture, but here is a link to the story: link

Tough to see here, but Milwaukee catcher Johnny Estrada had some link last night.

The Cub announcers mentioned how it was “Retro Friday” in Milwaukee, and that the Brewers would be wearing those ’82 duds on Fridays this season. At least they had the sense to make sure the link have the old MB/ball/glove logo as well.

As of 11:20 am EDT, headline on ESPN.com’s baseball page says that Astros will retire Bagwell’s No. 25, but the story itself says that No. 5 will be retired.

That is just the way the Pirate’s unique number font looks like. The 7’s in Zach Duke’s 57 and John Wasdin’s 37 look the same way.

I wonder if it wouldn’t be wise for MLB to schedule games during early April in exclusively warm weather cities or cities with roofs or domes?

Based on what’s happened the last couple days, MLB — and minor league baseball — seems to be the wild, wild West when it comes to deciding whether games are played because of cold weather/snow.

I endured the White Sox-Indians game on Wednesday, when the game time temperature was 31 and the wind gusting up to 30-40 mph at the least. Then, on Friday, with basically similar conditions for a weekend game, they call it.

The Indians on the other hand play most of their home opener in a snowstorm before it became too much. It makes me wonder if they would have started a game under similar conditions if it was, say, a weekday game or not the home opener.

Either the conditions are playable or they’re not playable. MLB needs to take the decision out of the home club’s hands.

Just to make this uni-related, let me say I’m impressed with the players who took the field in the White Sox-Indians chillout with no undershirts or undershirts with cutoff sleeves — I believe Joe Crede and perhaps Matt Thornton did so.

By the way, I mentioned the minors because I had tickets to Friday night’s Indianapolis Indians-Columbus Clippers game only to have it postponed because of cold. The ridiculous thing is that as I’m driving away from the ballpark, I had to put on my sunglasses because of the bright sunshine and I had to turn down the heat because the weather really wasn’t that bad.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned it, but while watching the mets vs braves game last nite, the camera zoomed in on the home plate ump and he had a football helmet on his front plate. It appeared to be a silver helmet, and the announcers made it clear that they didn’t know what it was a memorial of. I will look for pictures.

The Brew Crew throwback uniforms were technically wrong — they had names on the back, yet originally the Brewers didn’t wear names at home in 1982. I think they only put the names on those home jerseys for a brief period in the 1990s.

Huh. I guess I am glad the Twins/Sox game got called ahead of time after all. I thought five innings make an official game. Since when did that change?

Matthew S. (from last night), I have always liked the New Zealand All Blacks (obviously), but those videos have made it official. They are my all-time favorite team. The ‘caller’ in the first video is cute, too, which is a nice added bonus. See, all black looks juuuuuust fine.

The link:

Can’t go wrong with black.

And the origional unis where pullovers ,and these are Button downs.

After watching all the videos Matthew S. linked, I have come to a few conclusions. One, I don’t like the three-striped huge number unis as much. Too much white. Two, I am moving to New Zealand and becoming a rugby fan. Those guys are awesome (and cute). Three, rugby is a rough game.

Ok. So since the game was in Cleveland, I am assuming that it was the top of the fifth when it was called? Is that right? I looked up the rules, and that’s how I interpreted it.

the sad part is that it was 80 on tuesday here in cleveland, it has since snowed everyday, and that my friends is cleveland weather.

I know just a little bit of research would answer this question but wouldn’t they sometimes run into snow in those games in Alaska? Yeah, it might be hard to see the ball in the snow but there’s a big difference in something moving vertically down from the sky and something moving horizontal across the field. And for catching the ball when hit do you not watch the ball move when it’s hit. It’s just my opinion that calling a game because of snow is just bs.
I wonder if it wouldn’t be wise for MLB to schedule games during early April in exclusively warm weather cities or cities with roofs or domes?
I hate that idea, Then cities like Cincinnati who have a very rich Opening Day tradition would lose out.

“Over the years, Cincinnati’s fierce pride in its baseball heritage has spawned some misconceptions about the Opening Day traditions. One of the most common holds that Major League Baseball, either by statute or informal understanding, grants the Reds the right to begin each season at home.

“Opening Day” notes, however, that geography, marketing and custom had more to do with that tradition than gratitude from the front office of Major League Baseball over the Reds being the home of professional baseball.”

link

Sometimes for the sake of tradition 18 players can suck it up and play in some chilly weather. I just find it funny that all of a sudden because of a few days of inclimate weather everyone is acting like this happens every year in every city, but the average temp this time of year does happen to be in the 60’s in Cincinnati.

Seems the Indians weather woes are extending down to the minor league ranks as well. Here in Buffalo, the Bisons season opening series with Richmond has been axed. We lost games on Thursday, Friday and today. We’re going to try for a doubleheader tomorrow despite more of the same weather in the forecast. Here was the scene at link in lovely downtown Buffalo this morning.

Hey Terry Mark, I hear where you’re comin’ from. I’m supposed to be soaking in the second part of today’s doubleheader in Indianapolis, which is slated to start at 7. What the weather channel says about 7: 32 degrees, wind chill of 20, with flurries. Luckily I’m going to get to run around on the hill beyond the outfield fence to stay warm. I’m sure I’ll get to see all sorts of nice uni mods for the players to deal with the cold.

I take back part of my earlier comment. Discovered that the alaskan league doesn’t start until June/July. There is no college baseball, even intramural. And high school baseball doesnt start until May. I wish I had found some cool uni photos but didnt see much.

believe it or not, it was 80 in cleveland just a few days ago, ever since then its snowed.

The NY Islanders’ fisherman logo, unveiled in the summer of 1995, would have lasted only one year had the team had its way. Late in the 1995-96 season, they proposed ditching the fisherman and placing the original logo on the new jersey, but the NHL made them wait another year. That became the third jersey in 1996-97 and the regular uniform in 97-98; not a bad uniform, actually, except for the numerals on the back. It only lasted one year as the regular jersey; the team went to a modified version of its traditional design in 1998-99.

The Rangers wore a crested jersey with shoulder yoke for a year or two in the mid-’70s before returning to their traditionsl diagonal-lettered design.

The Jets’ 1963 jet plane helmet logo, and the 1964 white oval logo, also lasted only one year apiece. Same with the Giants’ 1975 line-design “NY” decal.

The Oakland Raiders’ white shield logo was worn for only one year, 1963; the team also had gold numbers on its road jerseys that year.

The Mets wore pinstripeless white alternates, sans black trim, with white blue-billed caps (the so-called “ice cream caps”) for a few games in 1997. Later that season they wore the regular blue caps with the “snow-whites.” The white/blue cap became the black/blue cap in 1998, when the black alternate was added; the “snow-whites” and road greys took on their black drop-shadow trim, but the pinstriped uniforms still lacked the black trim that year.

Well, game’s been postponed, much to my chagrin. There has to be some way that these guys can stay warm out there on the diamond. If there isn’t, then that’s too bad. Football wideouts go out there and catch hard, cold footballs on their cold arms, which we all know doesn’t feel good at all. These baseball players even have the option of wearing jackets on the field. I was prepared to suck it up and watch the game in the cold, so maybe they should be prepared to suck it up and play in the cold.

The Brewers pinstriped unis yesterday looked so much better than what they are wearing today. They should use them as their normal home unis. The whites they are wearing today are horrible. I don’t like the stripe down the pants, it looks sloppy on the big guys (and the Brewers have a bunch). Plus I don’t like the hats. Maybe it is the darker blue and yellow that look bad to me.

I do wish the Cubs were wearing the blue jerseys. Although I don’t really like the blues I like the idea that the starter gets to choose what to wear.

Also, that causes the teams that play the early season games at home to lose home dates when the pennant races get into swing.

True, but not the high stirrups as he did yesterday with the throwbacks. I guess that was an intentional throwback stirrup placement as well.

If anyone was watching the Portsmouth vs. Manchester United contest today, the Portsmouth keeper was wearing a cap, presumably due to the intense sunlight in his eyes on that side of the pitch.

There was one season where the A’s had a road cap that was all dark green with a white “A’s”. The next year, I think, they changed road caps to the current all green with a yellow “A’s”.

Watching the Fox Game of the Week, getting the local feed of LA @ SF, (56 degrees here @ game time)- they ran a commercial of Alex Rodridguez for Boys & Girls Clubs–he was in his Yankees uni but the Majestic logo (which does not show on-field) was smudged out, and rather badly so.

Ugh @ the Twins… the all-grey nameplate on TOP of pinstripes is tacky as hell…

Just flipped to the Rapids / United game.. really really annoying that both teams are wearing exactly the same shorts – white with dark adidas striping and logos and a nearly identical font jersey number on the left hip. Makes team identification difficult in traffic, especially since United’s keeper is wearing them too.

Of the 22 on-field, only the Rapids’ keeper has an off color (solid dark grey kit for him).

Wish we had the Twins game here, but we have the Fox C game here in Denver (Dodgers/Giants). As previously mentioned here teh Dodgers have gone back to the nameplates and have ditched the white trim on the stitch set. The nameplate font is a lot thinner than the previous incarnation – hard to tell if they changed font style altogether or ots just a result of losingthe white border.

When the term “nameplate” is used, does that describe the piece of fabric that the letters are stitched to, and then stitched to the uniform?

If that is the case, it doesnt look like the Dodgers are using nameplates…the names are directly stitched to the road grays.

Also, the Dodgers removed the blue trim. They went from link to link.

The link had a small font Chicago road uni in 1990. Then changed to a larger font in 1991.

The linkhad a lot of changes in the ’70’s.

Flipping between the Masters and the Dodgers/Giants game (what a day!), and I couldnt help but notice how many logos Tiger is wearing today.

Swoosh on his sweater.
Swoosh on the front of his hat.
“Nike One” logo on the right side of his hat.
Nike “Sasquatch” logo on the left side of his hat.
“TW” logo on the back of his hat.
Swooshes on his clubs.
Swoosh on his ball.
Swooshes on his shoes.

All of those seemed “normal” to me. Then I noticed link one (look at the bottom of his left pantleg)

I gues it could be link.

I’m going to the Military Opening Night for the Padres tonight. I know almost everyone here hates the camoflouge uniforms, but they are very significant to our community. I really respect the Padres for how active they are in reaching out to the military. Yesterday marked the debut of a new exibit under the right field bleachers that will feature ballplayers that spent time serving their country. There is also a large model of the USS Midway in the exhibit. link

Anyone else think that it’s awesome that there isn’t a corporate logo in sight at the college hockey national championship? Only the NCAA and conference logos.

I just realized that you were probably asking about the photo, not a linking issue.

That’s the University of San Diego Toreros. Petco Park hosted a 4-team tournament last month called the link Classic. The link had the Oklahoma Sooners against USD. The link had the San Diego State Aztecs (horrible link) against the Michigan Wolverines.

I’m changing my mind about the baggy pants look. It is not all bad, Roy Oswalts tight pants are way too revealing. I think I can read the logo on his cup. Gross.

This offseason I finally broke down and bought a new big HDTV. Football and basketball have been great but I think I enjoyed baseball more without the clarity. Too many gross players with unkempt facial hair. Not to mention the sloppy fat players and all the spitting and scratching.

Jill, I agree that Oswalt’s pants are too tight for my comfort. But I’m definitely satisfied with the HDTV bringing the stripes of Reyes’ stirrups to life!

dont know if anyones watching but MSU and BC are playing in the NCAA hockey finals. THe goalie for BC, Cory Schneider has a great mask. Both he and his brothers (friends of mine) are nicknamed Schneids, and Cory has “schneids” on the chin of his mask in a cool graffiti type of font. Whats odd, is that I’ve never seen him wear this before. Cool that he has his own personalized BC mask, especially since he plays US hockey as well.

um sorry to be a buzzkill, but scottrade is a corporation.

Is it possible to buy an authentic Yankees jersey without the Majestic logo on the sleeve?

Dbacks are wearing alternate reds tonite. I personally think they look pretty good, especially in the same shot with the Nationals unis.

Ian Snell is their only African-American player, but several Latino Pirates wouldn’t have been in the majors before Jackie Robinson.
Does anyone else have any examples, soccer teams dont count since they change every year anyway.Les
The New Jersey Nets wore tie-dye uniforms on the road in the 1990-91 season, but switched to a regular blue uniform the next season.
Flipping between the Masters and the Dodgers/Giants game (what a day!), and I couldnt help but notice how many logos Tiger is wearing today.

Swoosh on his glove.

Along with all those swooshes, he’s got dollar signs in his eyes, too. he shot a 72 and is in second place going into Sunday. I wouldn’t bet against him at this point. Woods and The Masters are like what Bjorn Borg was to Wimbledon or the French Open- they’re just meant to win it. Of course, it helps if Mickelson implodes.

Very strange that people are selling a supposedly “authentic” and “on-field” jersey that the player in question will link in a game.

ABC running the annual “Ten Commandments;” some wicked great uni’s the Pharoah’s men are wearin’ there…..

Even weirder when it’s link

was going to post this earlier in the week: david wright has been missing the mlb logo from the back collar of his grey road jersey. i noticed this wednesday night in st. louis and then again today in atlanta.

I thank everyone who mentioned that A-Rod Boys and Girls Club commercial, because it just happened to come on, and I noticed every little thing in there. Also, I suppose it’s not a huge deal that Alex is wearing the pin stripes at Tropicana Field. I bet the Yanks are more popular in the Tampa area than the Rays, thanks to spring training.
I noticed that too, but since I only watched about half the game, I didn’t really see any close-ups of it. I figured it was just a brand sticker or something.

Solid basketball advice: When trying to break an 18-game losing streak at a particular team’s home arena, don’t wear orange alts!

Golden State didn’t get the memo.

Don’t know if I can remember all of these, but since I was a big A’s fan when they moved out to the West Coast back in ’68, I used to keep track
of their yearly changes.

In 1968: Old English “OAKLAND” on shirts; “A” on caps.

1969: Went to “A” and number on front of shirt.

1970: Added apostrophe-s to “A” on cap and shirt. (I think this was the first year with names on jerseys, too.)

1971: Changed cap bill to yellow (same design as today’s home cap). Also changed batting helmets from gold (THOSE looked strange!) to match caps.

1972: Went away from vests, over to doubleknit shirts — white, kelly green, and gold. (Formerly, the “green” jersey-vest was grayish-green; they called it “mint.”)

1973: Updated the font of the “A” slightly. Also changed the color combo on gold jersey from white-with-green-border to green-with-white-border.

1974: First year with no changes since moving to Oakland.

Just some notes from San Diego:

Through 4 games, the padres have only worn a “regular uniform” (i.e. home or away) once.
Blue alternates for the first three, home white for the home opener. And tonight, the link for Military Opening Night.
[Side Note] Can the Rockies please stop wearing purple? It’s just not cool.

While Jose Cruz Jr.’s stirrups have dlink since spring training, they were link tonight in his pinch hit appearance. My guess on this would be that he didn’t want their normal blue socks(that could only be seen on Josh Bard on the bench[night off]) to linkwith the brown/green military uniforms.
Hopefully they(along with regular home/road unis) will make their return soon.

Also from the Padres game, it looks like link. I guess the Pads figured that the khaki road pants looked better with the desert camouflage even though they were at home.

And Soriano might still wear that blue road jersey — they could bring back the blue shirts, which a lot of people like, at any time. The team hadn’t announced that they wouldn’t use those when the shirts went into production, so you can hardly fault the stores for selling them. I just hope they keep the blue shirts on the road and not at home.

You figured correctly my friend. They’ve worn their road pants ever since they switched to desert camouflage tops.

Pregame was great. They had the Leap Frogs parachute into the outfield. Seven frogs came down. One had to deploy his backup chute when his first got tangled up. Then there was a live feed to the USS Nimitz, which the captain informed us was just over 1,000 miles away from San Diego, having departed earlier this week. That was amazing. All the crew was out on the flight deck, and they kept cutting back during the Star Spangled Banner.

This was the 12th Annual Military Opening Night, and a tradition I look forward to every year.

it was nice to see the pads finally had matching green batting helmets with the camo unis, unlike previous years (pics anyone?). now, if they could only get under shirts that matched…(see wells)

My guess is that they thought it was lucky since they won 3 straight with it. After their loss last night, I expect to see the road gray (or at least the black vest) return today.

Tim, that sounds like a great tradition that the Padres are building. When they first wore the camouflage I thought they looked silly, but the jerseys (and the military-support theme) are starting to grow on me.

And this is going to make me a Uni Watch pariah, but I like the Rockies’ purple. For years no team in the majors wore this very basic color, and Colorado (for whom purple represents those mountains) does a much better job mixing this with black and silver than the Diamondbacks, where you couldn’t really figure out what the main color was. Maybe they could compromise and trade the purple jersey and black vest for a white vest and long purple undersleeves?

While watching the Twins-White Sox game yesterday, Carlos Silva was wearing a sleeve over the exposed finger on his glove hand. The sleeve matched the color of his glove. Can’t find any pics yet
