As most of you know, I don’t collect jerseys, caps, or anything like that. If I were going to go down that road, I’d probably focus on jersey patches — they’re fun, conversational, beautifully made, and probably the most consistently well-designed uniform elements.
So when reader David Sonny recently contacted me and said that a friend with an inside connection had given him a bunch of the Reds’ “Mr. Redlegs” sleeve patches, I was intrigued. “Do you want one of them?” he asked. Yo, does Juan Pierre wear stirrups?
The patch, which arrived a few days ago, is really nice. The most interesting thing about it, though, is on the back, where there’s a warning sticker — check it out.
Let’s ignore the whole bit about how you supposedly need their permission to do anything with the patch, since that’s obviously just a load of legalistic crap. The part that gets me is how the MLB brain trust has unilaterally decided what constitutes the patch’s “collectible value,” as if there’s only one kind of collector and only one kind of value. Hey, maybe I like collecting patches so I can glue them to my ceiling, or staple them to my denim jacket — maybe that’s my idea of value. Oh, but according to MLB, that means I’ve “ruin[ed]” everything. Yeah, I know, they’re probably trying to indemnify themselves against jersey counterfeiters, but the wording of the warning really sticks in my craw. What a bunch of losers.
The manufacturer, incidentally, is National Emblem, a Colorado operation that makes all sorts of patches, including the sleevewear that will be worn this season by the Mariners, Brewers, Giants, Devil Rays (not much to celebrate there, but I really like the patch design), and Marlins (plus this, although I’m not sure the Cardinals will actually be wearing it).
I was thinking how cool it would be to see National Emblems embroidery machines in action, so I went to YouTube and started poking around. Didn’t come up with anything quite as cool as Mr. Redlegs being created, but I did find two clips that I think you’ll find interesting. Both run less than 30 seconds, so take a look:
NFL News: As some of you may be aware from discussions now taking place on other sites, a photo of what appears to be a new Chargers jersey was briefly leaked on the team’s web site yesterday. It was quickly removed, but by that time it had already been downloaded for posterity. Here, take a look (and here’s the old design for comparison). Can’t say I really count it as an improvement, but let’s see if it’s actually legit before getting all worked up about it — I’ll make some calls.
Research Query: I’m working on a column about MLB players wearing sunglasses, so I’m looking for examples of MLB players who’ve worn their shades in some sort of personally distinct way (aside from Manny and his Thumps, which we all know about, thanks). I’d also be interested in learning about athletes in other sports — tennis, soccer, cricket, whatever — who’ve worn shades. I’m not talking about goggles here, mind you, but actual sunglasses. Feel free to contribute any and all ideas this-a-way, and big thanks in advance.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Just noticed something while clicking around the System of Dress web site: Look at that “TM” symbol on the Florida jersey. So bogus. … The Phillies will begin wearing a “VUK” patch next week, in memory of John Vukovich. Details here (with thanks to Chris Ashworth). … Here’s the schedule for this year’s NBA St. Patrick’s Day uniforms (green-clad team in ital): 3/11, Celtics/Bulls; 3/13, Bulls/Celtics; 3/14, Celtics/Hawks; 3/16, Celtics/Mavs and Knicks/Hornets; 3/17, Celtics/Spurs and Bulls/Grizzlies; 3/19, Celtics/Hornets. … It was Armed Forces Day in Viera yesterday, which meant the Nats had to wear these ridiculous blue camouflage caps. … There’s merchandising, and then there’s merchandising. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: There’s a video montage on YouTube that features tons of great deadball-era uniform photos. Check it out (with thanks to Michael Kramer):
For the most part, I like this year’s assortment of patches, but every time I see it, that Marlins Anniversary patch reminds me of an old beer bottle label.
You have to wonder why glue is attached to the backs of the patches if MLB considers it such a grievous crime to actually put the patch on something.
In fairness, Paul, isn’t the TM symbol the school’s trademark and not Nike’s? All of the t-shirts and sweatshirts on the Florida athletic department shop have the same symbol – regardless of manufacturer.
A themed urn for your remains? That’s nothing compared to link.
Still looking for pictures, but I heard on ESPN that the MD Terps men’s bb team changed shoes at halftime yesterday during the 1st round on the ACC Tourney. Does anybody have details or pix?
Found this quote from a fantasy blog I subscirbe to. Just another opinion of System of Dress.
“The “might need a win to get off the bubble†Syracuse Orangemen lost to Notre Dame yesterday 89-83. Oops, sorry, make that the Syracuse Orange. No, nix that. I meant Orangemen. They were the Orangemen when I went there, they’ll always be the Orangemen to me. And don’t expect a 2003-like run again. In a game earlier this year, they went nine minutes without a single FG. Yes, nine minutes, or just under 25% of a game for you math wizards. Final Four teams don’t do that. And don’t get me started on the new uniforms they’re wearing next week. Remember when players wore uniforms? Now they’re wearing a “systemâ€Â. I guess HAL must’ve ordered them.”

Did I say anything about Nike? I just think it’s lame-o to have a trademark symbol on a uniform. Withi the exception of the Cubs, I can’t think of another team that does it.

Apparently they were special shoes for the ACC Tournament. I guess Gary thought they were bad luck and decided to pull a Gilbert Arenas.
I’ve never seen a TM or ® on any on-court uniform either. I think the â„¢ in addition to the Nike logo on the jersey proves this to be a display model only. NCAA rules do not allow the jersey manufacturer’s logo on the jersey, and I think the only reason one would see a â„¢ or ® is for merchandising purposes.

Why in God’s name can’t the Chargers simply go back to the one of the best uniforms ever to grace a gridiron — the powder blues?
One of the guys on ESPN last night (either on sportscenter proper or at the college hoops show) pointed out that 2 two of the teams wearing the ‘new tight uniforms’ had early exits from their conf. tournaments.
Do they Get It?

Man those are great looking unis! And look out field of 65! (Just as long as Miami isn’t one of them!)
1) those white-on-red shoes for UMD look SOOO much better than the shiny red and black things they were wearing at the start. Too bad none of it could get them past Miami.
2) If that Chargers uni is the real deal, I think the jury is still out in my head. I like the Pacific Blue and I like having the lighting bolts on a white field, but I’m not sure if I like the combination of them, especially in that position on the shoulder.
3) I had not realized that the gator print was actually embroidered into Florida’s uniform…I thought it was a trick of an ink pattern in the fabric. It actually looks kind of cool really close up. Still looks strange from afar.
Please, let us pray that that Chargers uniform is a prototype or proposal or something along those lines that will never see the field. Ych.
The Chargers are about the only team whose over-the-shoulder UCLA-type striping scheme has not become completely ridiculous (see: Colts). I can deal with the white field, but please, keep it vertical rather than horizontal; keep the numbers on the sleeves rather than the shoulders, and don’t change the font. Better yet, just bring back the powder-blues already.
I have so many questions about this photos of Reds infielder Brandon Phillips that I barely know where to start.
link
1. The left sleeve of his Nike pox shirt looks to have been neatly trimmed, and not haphazardly cut off.
2. What is that peeking out from under his right sleeve and hear his collar? Something white? Are the Nike shirts not all black?
3. For shoes, is he wearing trainers? You can tell from the background that the photo was taken during infield or batting practice, but I didn’t realize that players had taken to wearing trainers at those times.
Hi
Id imagine that Chargers uni is the real deal ,I can see them having a Navy home ,White road and a Powder Blue Alternate all from the same modern template. Which after a couple of years I can see them transfering the Powder Blue to home and Navy blue to alternate in the way the Falcons did with the Black and Red when they moved to the new Uniform template.

As per the Mariners 1977-2007 patch, looks good, are the Blue Jays going to have a patch?, if I recall correctly, the Jays came to life the same year as the Mariners. The Blue Jays are up 2 World Series to 0.
Interesting that the Blue Jays celebrated their “30th Season” last year, while the Mariners are celebrating their “30th Anniversary” this season. They came into the league the same year, and yet chose to wear patched in different seasons. I’ve never really noticed anything like that before. Personally I think the Jays are right.
With regard to the Reds patch, his name is rather curious. He is known as Mr. Redlegs, giving a nod to the Reds teams of the 1950s, when they were briefly renamed the Redlegs due to McCarthyism.
So what is odd about all this? Mr. Redlegs is a double throwback. His name has the 1950s reference, while his mustache and hat look to be from the pre-1900 baseball era.
The character, sans mustache and old-time uniform, was seen in the 1960s and thereafter, and was known as Mr. Red or The Running Man.
My $0.02 on the Chargers unis…
First…I am holding off judgment until I see a larger and official picture with pants, helmet, home and away, ect. They COULD be a lot worse from what we can tell. They are not the Vikings, Atl, Ariz, or Seattle (just to name a few). BUT they COULD have some kind of U of Miami type bib across the back, which would cause all of us to go nuts!
Second…I USED to wish that SD would just go back to the Powder Blues. They are my fav uni of all time, and it is what made this kid from Maryland fall in love with the Chargers at the age of five. BUT, as other posters have said, everyday Powder Blues would make them seem less special. Twice a year, and the play-offs, would be fantastic.
Third…Graf Zeppelin…the Carolina Panthers also have UCLA-type stirpes that go all the way around the shoulder.

Paul, I understand the Cardinals will be wearing that particular patch all season. In fact, I’ve been told they’ll be the first team that will wear a World’s Champions patch the entire season and not just part of a season.
i was watching the washington washington state basketball game on FSN last night, and the cameras just panned to the washington cheerleaders after a made basket with about 3:00 left in the 1st half and i noticed that she was a bit “huskier†(sorry couldn’t resist) than the other cheerleaders, also the big girl had a top that went all the way to her skirt whereas the others had an opening in the midesction where you could see their stomachs, is this common anywhere else? i know i havent seen it outside of high school here in alabama. it would be awesome if someone could find a screenshot of this.
Adidas has unvieled their new ball which will be used in the UEFA Champions League Final in Athens. Article and picture link.
(Too bad Arsenal are out, ho hum….)
That Brewers patch makes me wonder, will the Cubs wear a patch next season celebrating their last World Series championship?
At what point does a team’s last title move from being something worthy of recognition to a source of shame? I’m not so sure I’d want to point out that our team hasn’t won squat in 100 years… or even 25 years.
..just found this; The Toronto Blue Jays came into existence in 1976 as one of two teams slated to join the American League for the next season (the other being the Seattle Mariners).
>is probably the reason they wore the 30 year patch last year..must have been a snoozer, cause I don’t even recall seeing it.
Paul, I understand the Cardinals will be wearing that particular patch all season. In fact, I’ve been told they’ll be the first team that will wear a World’s Champions patch the entire season and not just part of a season.
I thought other teams had worn a champions patch the whole season before… the only one that possibly comes to mind is the 04 Marlins, but I could be wrong. Thats really gonna bug me to think about while I work.
I can’t stand those patches from National Emblem with the warning on the back of them. Not because of the warning, but because of the super-thick rigid plastic backing they use to make it impossible to sew the patch onto a jersey.
I have, on occasion, been forced to buy some of these since I was unable to get a patch with the normal thin coating used to keep the threads from coming out of the patch. If the patch has an embroidered edge, you can bend the edge over and get the backing to crack or separate from the edging, which will allow you to go after it with a needle nose pliers and remove the backing. Many, if not most, NHL patches don’t have a bound edge though. If this is the case, I’ve never been able to get the backing to separate from the patch without fearing tearing up the edge of the patch. I’ve heard some sellers tell me that people have methods to get the backing off of them, including one mention of microwaving the patch to soften the plastic, but I’m not going down that road as a married man. Perhaps you single guys can abuse your kitchen appliances like that without having to answer to your annoyed spouses and get back to me if it really works.
Last year, the Minnesota Wild sold “5th Season” patches in their team shop. At the start of the year they were the thick style, suitable for putting into a plastic page in an album, but not much else. They said the only way you could get one of the patches on your jersey was to give them your jersey for them to sew on, at a cost of $20. No sewable patch was allowed out of the store unless it was sewn onto a jersey. Later in the season, that changed and the usual “thin coated” patches were sold in the team store.
I’ve heard that National Emblem is now the official manufacturer for NHL patches and will be making all of them with the thick plastic backing (complete with your warning to not enjoy your patch), so if anyone has a tried and true method for removing that annoying backing, please share it.
Also beware when buying newer patches off of ebay. It’s usually impossible to tell wether you are getting a “backed” patch or a sewable patch. Some sellers will slip the word “collectable” into the description to cover themselves if you buy one and then complain you can’t sew it on. Many people might not know that “collectable” = “unuseable”.
My last comment on “the system”. I’m moderately surprised (but not disappointed) that Nike didn’t choose Oregon in their roll out. Oregon is arguably better this year than Arizona or Syracuse and it just seems that given the marketing “push” they got from the football unis, this would be a natural progression (or possibly regression, if that’s possible). I did dig the striping on the Syracuse shorts, though.
For those of us that cant see anything on flickr, can some one transcribe the warning or give a brief synopsis?
also what do the chargers uni’s look like? any other links besides the flickr one?
thanks
JeffB….this sounds crazy, but it has worked a few times for me.
The microwave method works because it heats the glue and makes it pliable enough for you to pull off the backing, but you have to do it before the glue hardens again. I would suggest heating the patch somehow (microwave/boiling it/clothes dryer/hair dryer etc…) and then putting it in the freezer right away and letting it sit over night. This will seal the glue in place before it attaches completely to the plastic backing. Then it should be easier to pull the thick backing off.

Anyone know if the Giants will be wearing a patch in addition to the All-Star game patch for their 50th season in SF? They usually celebrate the milestone seasons and not anniversaries. They had link in 1982 for their 25th season in SF.
This will also be the Dodgers 50th season in LA, but I can’t recall how they have commemorated milestones in the past.

Any anniversary occurs at the end of a one year period. You celebrate your first wedding anniversary after your first year of marriage. You celebrate a 30th anniverary after the 30th year. So both teams are correct.

Thank you “Jeff Scott”!!! I have been saying what you said about the Brewers patches for weeks on here. Even though I am a die hard Crew fan, why in the world are they celebrating the 25 anniversary of losing the World Series??? Now, most will say they are celebrating their AL Championship in that year, and being the teams only one, it is somewhat noteworthy to celebrate. However, if a team celebrated all of their League Championships, wouldn’t the Yankees be having a sleeve patch every year? And in some cases multiple ones for 25th and 10th year anniversary’s? Does anyone else on here get what I am saying?
Travis, I have a question for you. If you are so incensed by this website, why do you keep coming here? Do you enjoy being pissed off? I’m honestly curious what your motivation is.

Paul, I understand the Cardinals will be wearing that particular patch all season. In fact, I’ve been told they’ll be the first team that will wear a World’s Champions patch the entire season and not just part of a season.
If I remember correctly, didn’t a team or two back in the ’10s/’20s actually add “World’s Champions” to their on-jersey logo for the entire season following their title?
This is from the Hall of Fame’s Web site: “The St. Louis Cardinals’ defeat of the New York Yankees in the 1926 World Series brought St. Louis its first World Championship since 1886. The following season, the Cardinals donned uniforms boasting of their laurels. This self-promoting uniform style was first introduced by the 1906 New York Giants and repeated by the 1921 Cleveland Indians. The Cardinals of 1927 were the last club to advertise their champion status on their shirt front.”

A jouranlist/reporter doesn’t have ANY opinion about the things they are reporting/writing about.
To do so goes against the entire code of journalistic ethics.
We are living in the age of commentary and oipinion being forced off on us as journalism and straight reporting.
Lukas has as much right to call himself/be called a journalist/reporter as Rush Limbaugh.
He’s a commentator, and opinion giver.
He ain’t no journalist.
There is a difference between a Journalist and a “straight reporter”. Journalists can express their views within an article if the article calls for it. Take the opinions out of every article, magazine and newspaper and what do you have? An encyclopedia. Opions are not only accepted within journalism but they are used quite frequently, those pieces are called editorials. This of someone who reviews movies, they are journalists, yet they go and watch a film and then give their OPINIONS about the film… and yet they are still journalists.
This whole site in fact is one long-running editorial. One thing that strikes me however is that if Paul wanted this site to only express his views this mini-forum would not exist. Without the ability to express personal thought, opinions or even argue with others, this site would lose a lot of traffic. Paul could simply turn this whole forum off and it would be his opinion being shoved down our throats with no chance to voice our own. Instead of all that Paul has enabled us to talk about how WE see it, what WE think about not only uniforms, but his opinions.
So Paul called someone an idiot… sounds like someone needs to grow a thicker skin and suck it up. It that person was secure enough with their opinion then they could do one of 2 things; A) continue to read the blog all the while understanding that Paul, or someone else may disagree with them, or B) Quit reading the blog and keep their opinions in their own head wjhere no one will disagree with them and they will never lose an arguement.
Do you truly believe that other journalists don’t have opinions? Do you believe that they haven’t called someone an idiot for expressing a view that they did not agree with? You should know better than that. The only reason we see this side of Paul is that he has this blog where he happens to post, and when someone makes a stupid comment he calls them out on it.
It sounds to me like you want this blog to either turn into a reference page with links to changes with only a discription and no comments or editorial review of it. Or you would like it to like a sports talk show where the host simply tells everyone that their points are valid and that everyone is right. Well, this is the real world and not everyone is right, in fact I see people making dumbass comments all the time… and people call them out on it.
Sounds to me like someone is overly sensitive… In the real world people get called out for being wrong or for having an opposing opinion and if they can’t take it then they need to either grow up or give up.
In the picture of Marbury in the St. Patrick’s Day uni, the ball has a shamrock… anybody know the game ball will for those games?

I just made a couple calls to make sure before I said anything. They are offically for sale at the stadiums Majestic shop. He also said that he THINKS the away jersey’s C patch is for sale for about half the price of Mr. Redlegs.
He also said he didn’t know how many they would be selling, but that they probably wouldn’t have many on hand there.
Hope that helps.
Wow Travis…thanks for the unwarranted and unprovoked personal attacks! Consider me put in my place.
Paul – I think I see an IP ban in the near future!
Any anniversary occurs at the end of a one year period. You celebrate your first wedding anniversary after your first year of marriage. You celebrate a 30th anniverary after the 30th year. So both teams are correct.
Yeah, I understand they are both correct. Poor choice of words by me in my original post. What I meant was I think that the way the Jays celebrated is the way that teams should. Thats just my opinion, and it really doesn’t matter if teams want to celebrate the xth season, or xth anniversary. I still think it is interesting that they did it in different seasons. Does anyone know if the two teams have always done it like this? I remember Jays 20th and 25th year logos (although I dont know if they wore them on their jerseys) but I don’t really follow Seattle much.
Very nice David and bg, thanks for the info. Now on to my second quest for a southwestern ohio uniWatch party . . .

Wow, looks like a fun day on the blog again. But I have an actual uni-related question for anyone familiar with Seattle Mariners history… have they ever actually worn this (sorry, my hot-link skills suck):

or was it just a promo item? I know they wore a solid teal jersey some during the ’95 playoff run, but have no idea about this pinstripped version. I have one of my own in this style, which is why I ask…
Thanks in advance for any help!
Something I did want to say about the Mr. Redlegs patch, something I forgot to add to the email that you may find slightly interesting Paul.
This is the official “logo”, note the angle at which he is tilted to give the appearance of running:
link
Here is is again at the “fashion show” in the background:
link
Now, on the uniform itself he is placed standing completely straight:
link
For whatever reason I think a lot is lost by taking that tilt away… but alas I think I might be the only one who will end up being bothered by it.
As a complete side note, why the hell did they make the home uniform numbers so large in comparison to the aways?

My apologies if this has been said, etc 20 million times before. I am new to posting here.
As a die-hard Brewers fan and cheesehead, I agree that the Crews patch should say AL Champs. Robin Yount is my guy but why celebrate a loss??
Also, if Rollie Fingers is healthy the Crew wins it in 7. :)
I play on a baseball team that plays by the rules of 1886 and wears uniforms of teams from that era. This year we have taken the form of the Boston Beaneaters. You can see the uniforms we are going to be wearing link (that’s Mike “King” Kelly).
My question is, does anyone know if stirrup socks were worn in 1881. I couldn’t find any visual evidence. I bought two pairs of navy blue stirrups to wear this season but didn’t think of the historical accuracy. Anyone have anything that could help?

Easy on the D-Rays Paul. They have something to celebrate about their 10 year anniversary and are looking at a really good year.
Upon closer inspection, those Cardinals socks do not appear to be genuine stirrups…still a cool visual though.

See comment 108, I looked at them a little more closely and realized he’s actually wearing faux stirrups. Still very cool looking though.
I know that particular striping is unique to the Cards (Anthony Reyes wears similar socks now), but how can someone who used to wear high socks suddenly abandon it (someone other than David Wright). Simontacchi can wear high socks with the Nationals like Alfonso Soriano did last year: link

They do have the silver stripes on the back of the shoulders.
The white jerseys look too much like wife beaters to me
quote comment=”59261″]My last comment on “the system”.
I believe Nike decided to try these new Uniforms on a select few of what they call “Elite” teams. In non Nike terms, that means a Team that has been to the final four. I believe (I could be incorrect) that Oregon has never been to the final four, therefore they could not be one of the teams included in this.
Nike deignates these “Elite” teams with link. However George Mason made the final four last year and get outfitted by Nike but they did not give them the “Elite” status, link. Just checked, link
Very nice David and bg, thanks for the info. Now on to my second quest for a southwestern ohio uniWatch party . . .
If you go to Koch’s say hi to Kris for me.
Yes, Pantherfid, the Carolina Panthers have the full over-the-shoulder stripe. I did say that the Chargers were “about the only team” (not “the only team”) to preserve the design as NFL jerseys grew tighter and tighter and actual sleeves gradually disappeared over the past 20 years or so.
My only point was that most teams who had a similar design either truncated it to the point of absurdity, as the Colts did, or got rid of it altogether, as the Bengals did. And that I think the Charger uniform is just fine the way it is, even though I (like most on this board) would prefer the AFL-era colors.
The Giants and Dodgers will wear a 50th Anniversary of their franchise move patch next year from what I’m hearing, the D-Bax for their 10th anniversary and the Mets and Yankees for Shea and Yankee Stadium (on the home unis, with the Yaks carrying an ASG patch home and away on the right sleeve) according to reports. Do you mean the patch will be worn in ’08? If so, that goes against what the Giants have been doing for at least 25 years. Lame.
Hey Jeff… I do this for all patches with the thick backing and it works great and doesn’t damage the patch. If you make a small cut or scratch going across the patch with a box cutter/x-acto knife, then hit it with hot air from a hairdryer while slightly bending it back and forth the plastic will split down the middle and be warm enough to pull away from the fabric of the patch. What’s left is a perfect patch for applying to anything your uni-loving heart desires!
In the picture of Marbury in the St. Patrick’s Day uni, the ball has a shamrock… anybody know the game ball will for those games?
Look closer and note that the NBA logo is part of the shamrock. Should this be considered a rare double logo creep?
And the Marlins patch is disappointingly generic. It looks like a template any team can use. Yawn.

While I agree with you (I LOVE the powder-blue unis, including the numbers on the helmets), I’ve seen it written before (I want to say on this particular site) that the reason they don’t go back to the powder blue as their home uni is because the owner or general manager or whoever really likes the navy blue (I don’t have any proof of this–Paul, am I right in thinking that argument was posted on here?). Too bad, too–those baby blues are gorgeous.
That being said, I don’t mind the new jerseys (what we can see of them at least). They’re not great, but they’re not Vikings- or Bills-bad, either.
National Emblem does some fine, fine patchwork there, too. Nicely done.
Anyone heard yet what number Willis McGahee will be wearing with the Ravens since #21 is in use already by a pro-bowler?
Also now with J. Lewis gone, will R. Lewis have to be just “Lewis” for the first time as a Raven? It’s like the opposite of the Tom Brady situation. Can you keep the first initial even if it isn’t necessary?
Check it out …

Actually, Oregon has won a championship in men’s basketball. But I guess that because it was before the “age of Nike,” it doesn’t count for “Elite” status.

Speaking of uniform patches, besides eBay, which has been of no help, does anybody know where to locate one of the jersey patches worn by both Michigan and USC at this year’s Rose Bowl?

the nike elite division was created in 94.
when a team achieves final 4 status, they become an “elite” team member.
at that point nike is supposed to outfit them with the highest apparell contract they offer.

It’s kinda tricky to do the first time. I made a 2003 world series jersey for the Yankees (for I too am a rebel) so I had to do this to the ws patch and the 100 years anniversary patch. I found it easiest to cut an “X” into the plastic backing, it made the pieces of plastic a little easier to take apart. They don’t just pull off though, it does take some work, but trust me, it will come off and not harm the patch at all. Just keep working it and make sure when you make your cuts that its only through the plastic and not through the patch ( I know, kinda obvious, but I wouldn’t want you to ruin a perfectly good patch with a x-acto mishap and need to get a new one). I hope its helpful advice, if you need any help or clarifications just put a message back up, I’ll find it.

Back when the American league was wearing 100th anniversary patches, I wanted on for a White Sox jersey I received that year. The one’s they sold at the ball park had the plastic backing and you really couldn’t sew them to a uniform. It was a collectible not intended for that purpose. First, Mr. Lukas is a journalist. Please stop flaming him and one another. Otherwise, we will all be looking like @$$hats.
Second, I really like the redesigned Chargers unis. This team needed to do a redesign in the last decade. Now I may not be crazy about the new number font (easily available for download soon from the immortal Eric Jaffe on CCSLC’s boards) but it looks sleek and modern. I also heard that NFL Network’s Total Access will be showing the uniform unveilings Wednesday night on their show.
Third, thank you for confirming the Giants’ 50th Anniversary in San Francisco patch, whomever you are (or for those of you who might remember John “Roland” Zacherle sign-off “whatever you are”.) I do believe that the Phillies will have a 125th Anniversary Patch in 2008 as well, as well as the D-Bax (10th Anniversary season), Mets (Shea Stadium farewell), Dodgers (50th Anniversary in Los Angeles) and Yanks (ASG both home and away on the right sleeve and Yankee Stadium on the left sleeve of the home unis only) as well.
Now as far as wearing that World Champions patch, the Marlins (2004) and Chisox (2006) did wear one on their unis, and I think that would make them cocky and arrogant for doing so. The Red Sox did the right thing in 2005, only wearing the patch (along with a special jersey with gold trim between the navy and red on the lettering and numbers) for their ring ceremony. Against the Yankees. On Opening Day. At Fenway Park. I suggest that the team that wins the Series in 2007 (The Phillies, mayhaps? Hey, I can dream, can’t I?) only wear the championship patch on Opening Night and for the ring ceremonies. That’s it.
Now, let’s get back to some peaceful discussion about uniforms and othersuch.
Really more interested in the new Chargers helmet now that Ive already seen the jerseys 10 times even though the unvieling is Wednesday
Another view of the new Charger unis – Back of the jersey and side view of the pants:

I don’t think I like bolt on the pants.

Bingo
the nike elite division was created in 94.
when a team achieves final 4 status, they become an “elite” team member.
at that point nike is supposed to outfit them with the highest apparell contract they offer.
But if you’re a mid-major like George Mason, it doesn’t count. I guess Nike is selective in who it deems “elite.” Sure, having a patch on your jersey is fairly insignificant, however, it is the principle. Mason should have teh patch. Does their Final Four appearance count less than LSU’?

Paul, I understand the Cardinals will be wearing that particular patch all season. In fact, I’ve been told they’ll be the first team that will wear a World’s Champions patch the entire season and not just part of a season.
I thought other teams had worn a champions patch the whole season before… the only one that possibly comes to mind is the 04 Marlins, but I could be wrong. Thats really gonna bug me to think about while I work.
Last year the White Sox wore their ’05 World Series Champions patch on their home unis all season.
So Lukas is now calling people “losers.”
Really mature.
The mark of a true journalist.
Not.
Other posters on this blog have attacked me when I’ve called Lukas out for his obvious bias and visceral hatred for all things Nike and have bleated and shrieked a bunch of crap like “Lukas is a journalist/reporter and is just expressing his opinion etc, etc.”
Which proves what a bunch of ignorant dolts y’all truly are.
A jouranlist/reporter doesn’t have ANY opinion about the things they are reporting/writing about.
To do so goes against the entire code of journalistic ethics.
Sadly, I’m sure that some mope will come barging in and start screeching how what with the likes of Wikipedia and the Internet we are living in the age of the “new Journalism.”
No, we aren’t.
We are living in the age of commentary and oipinion being forced off on us as journalism and straight reporting.
Lukas has as much right to call himself/be called a journalist/reporter as Rush Limbaugh.
He’s a commentator, and opinion giver.
He ain’t no journalist.
Nike sucks. That said, you know Paul was hired by ESPN.com to write a column. If writing information and giving commentary just like the typical sportswriters at any given newspaper isn’t being journalism, then I don’t know what is.

Also, could the Phillies wear a 125th anniversary patch?
The Giants will have a 50th year move patch? Along with an All Star Patch? They already have a patch on one sleeve. Too many patches..too little time…
I seem to recall the Cubs having 3 patches on their road jersey for road All Star Games from 1991 & 1993. They had the standard primary logo on the left sleeve, and on the right sleeve, the bear-head logo, and the ASG patch stacked above it. I remember seeing Ryne Sandberg wearing this, and it looked awkward.

Just catching up from no access over the weekend. I think to be part of the Nike “Elite” program (and get the Final Four medalion) the team has to be fully Nike sponsored – as in Nike pays them to wear the uniforms. They don’t necessarily have to be a full Nike school (although most of them are anyway). I’m not sure if George Mason was sponsored or if they were actually buying the Nike uniforms/shoes through the team “discount” program.
The Chargers jerseys are actually close to what they wore during the 1986 and 1987 seasons, which IMHO were their best jerseys ever. Main differences are the positioning of the TV numbers, moving the bolt inserts slightly down the shoulders, the font and the presence of baby blue (why everyone goes orgasmic over baby blue I’ll never know).
The uniform actually represents a return to the Chargers gold bolt, which they wore until 1988.
The lightning bolt on the pants looks like it needs help, but the Chargers apparently thought the current bolt looked too much like a normal stripe.
I am cringing at the thought of the white helmet. The white helmets are the worst part of the baby blue uni. They just plain suck.
Illinois is also a Nike School that has the elite medallion on their jerseys. I would post a link but all I could find were cstv photo gallery photos that I don’t know how to link.

Thanks for the suggestions about removing the hard plastic backing from the patches. I especially like the idea of splitting it in the middle first. That sounds like it will spare the edges of the patch from damage getting things started.
I have a couple of the hard-backed ones at home and can’t wait to RUIN their collectability. I’m such a rebel.
Interesting you guys talk about this now. I am googling ways to get that blasted plastic off my Cubs 1969 jersey patch.
Looks like high heat is the issue. That glue WILL release if you get it hot enough. I couldn’t imagine risking damage to it by cutting.
My wife has a steamer she uses to remove wrinkles from dresses (NOT a steam iron). It heats and emits a solid jet of steam from a handle she can hold and has a handle cradle you can hang it in. I simply fired it up, took some tongs and placed the patch face down on the steamer plate where the steam came out. After about a minute, I got one corner loose with a plastic butter knife and began to slowly pry it off. 3 minutes later, that blasted backing was off, and I head for the tailor on Monday to get my Cubs jersey finally decked out the way I want it!
GO CUBBIES! THIS IS THE YEAR!
Regarding the removal of the thick backing from patches, I found a method that works pretty well. Soak your patch in water for about 5-10 minutes. Place it on a paper towel in the microwave with the backing facing up. Microwave for about 45 seconds. The steam that is created by the heated water will cause the backing to come right up. Very easy and the microwave does not damage the patch.
